hello everyone

i am a senior civil engineering student and preparing a case study paper on the pearl river tower for a course ı'm taking about tall buildings. i need to analyze the structural system of this building in detail and need some scaled structural plan drawings but i couln't find any over the internet or any books. there are non-scaled layout plans in the book "The architecture of Adrian Smith, SOM : toward a sustainable future" but it is better if i could find more accurate drawings.

i managed to find information about the structural system in one paper from the website of ASCE and the SOM book and that's all.

i appreciate any help you could provide me..

the photos from the construction site are very helpful by the way, thank you.

looking forward to your answers

Rise To The Top
May 17th, 2011, 07:06 AM
I'd very well say the sides are finished. They haven't done anything with the facade in months, and there are no cranes or elevators left to service the facade for installation. The only way I see them fixing it is if they use window cleaning scaffolding or if they can manage to take the panels off from the interior. Both would take a substantial amount of time.

I was in Guangzhou in the early 80's and there was one hotel tower and it was on all the postcards of the city. There was a huge city there, but no, and I mean no, skyline to speak of. The airport was one tiny building and you walked out to your CAAC old Russian plane.

As for Shenzhen...when you left HK and entered the PRC back in those days, there was nothing there. Shenzhen is the most changed place on the planet over the past quarter century. It is beyond mind blowing what happened there.

and I guess in this category HK is still the leader in Asia right now except of Dubai ?!

Shanghai: 3 or 4 ?
Mumbai will take the cake in the future with all the proposed projects.

Regarding skyscraperpage SEG has spires, so they add to the official height.

Well, SH has very high property prices and in terms of economic growth there is more potential left in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Nevertheless I'm pretty sure in the future there are still some supertalls for SH to come, but after the completion of Shanghai Tower, White Magnolia and several other skyscrapers/highrises, I think the market for office space in SH will be saturated for a while (but of course China has proven us wrong so many times ).

BTW Shanghai has much more buildings over 200m than those other cities (except HK). Fewer supertalls, but more skyscrapers.

People don't seem to want to give this tower the credit it deserves. It's a pioneer in energy-independent architecture.

Is this building really capable of powering all of its own energy? I find that hard to believe. :)

No. It powers around 50% (solar and wind). However, it was designed to power more than 100% :) In the planning they had gas turbines for the remaining energy need. Idea was during the day energy will be used by the building and during the night it would have been sold to the city grid. Guangzhou city didn't have a program like that so they had to cancel it.

Well, there aren't too many supertall clusters in China (or in the world). You can hardly call Shanghai's two supertalls a cluster. :)
I guess, besides Guangzhou, there is only Dubai with a real supertall cluster.

They topped this one out more than a year ago, so "already" is a bit out of order. I can't fathom why they are taking so long to prepare the interior. Bad planning, funds dried up or perhaps the demand for the building's space isn't high enough?
