Yeah, maybe for us, not for the people at this time. Some photos reminds me to North Korea in this days.
Then my romantic feelings will be crushed.

I donīt completely agree. Although poverty has definitely still been a problem in China during late seventies (and obviously even is nowadays), overall life quality was not that bad at that certain time. At least noone had to starve and nearly everyone had his share of work and a place to live. Life was simple but not like a torture. The current situation in North Korea - which is indeed dramatic and in no way romantic - might better be compared with China's years of the "great leap forward", the late fifties. Speaking to elders in China I had the impression that there are quite many among them who on one hand welcome the comfort that goes ahead with modernization while on the other hand miss the strong sence of community and friendship that has been typical for the older days (and got more and more replaced by competition and unequality).

You are right, at that time, China has the lowest Gini coefficient of the world... Perhaps lower than 2.0!

I agree with you since my parents have the similar ideas. However I was born in 1979 so I couldn't really say I'm aware of that very well. Outsiders know China by what their government told them. They need to live here like you to understand this country better.

Some of the pics are actually from the tread "Shanghai in the 80s" I recall. So yea, not all the pics are taken in 1979, if any at all..

I'm 21. But having left China for 28 years is just... I can't imagine what it would be like....
