Lebuh Raya Pantai Barat Hubungkan Taiping Dan Banting Dibina

EPU asks for more time on W Coast Highway proposal

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

The Economic Planning Unit (EPU) has requested for more time to assess the proposals for the West Coast Highway linking Taiping and Banting, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu.

Clarifying press reports that the proposed project had been cancelled in a statement on Nov 28, he said EPU would re-table the proposals to Cabinet after requesting for a "little more time" to make the assessment.

Samy Vellu had earlier said he did not know why EPU had withdrawn the proposal when he brought it to the Cabinet last week. He had also informed the Cabinet not to delay the project any further as the costs would increase.

Good News for Perak Coastal Dwellers

KUALA NERANG, March 4 (Bernama) -- After a delay of more than a decade, the cabinet has given the go ahead for the West Coast Expressway (LPB) project stretching 215.8 kilometres to be implemented soon.

Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the expressway, costing more than RM3.1 billion, would link Taiping in Perak to Banting in Selangor and was expected to be completed in seven years.

Speaking to reporters after the ground breaking ceremony for the Alor Star-Kuala Nerang-Durian Burung Road upgrading project, here today, he said the Konsortium LPB Sdn Bhd had been appointed to implement the project.

It will be the third longest expressway in the country after the North-South Expressway (PLUS) stretching 966 kilometres and the East Coast Expressway (LPT) which is 330 kilometres long.

Upon completion, 1.2 million vehicles are expected to use the LPB daily.

The Perak state government had earlier urged the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department to speed up the long-delayed project as land acquisition had been completed.

On the 47.8km Alor Star-Kuala Nerang-Durian Burung Road upgrading which cost RM246 million, Samy Vellu said it was expected to be ready in September 2009.

Projek Lebuhraya Pantai Barat RM3.1b dilaksana

It's ironic...I heard an RTM news report on an initiative to protect wetlands and coastal areas, followed immediately by an announcement of the LPB project being reawakened....

Hope they will build the highway keeping the damage to the minimum, which means elevated roads over wetlands and other environmentally vulnerable areas.

Europlus bags RM7.07b highway job
By Roziana Hamsawi Published: 2012/01/27
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/20120127001304/Article/index_html

Kumpulan Europlus Bhd has officially obtained the contract to build a RM7.07 billion highway linking Banting (Selangor) and Taiping (Perak).

Europlus said its 64.2 per cent-owned West Coast Expressway Sdn Bhd (WCE) obtained an approval letter yesterday from the Public Private Partnership Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department.

Releasing details of the project yesterday, Europlus said the West Coast Expressway will cover 316km. Of this, 224km will be tolled, while 92km will be toll-free.

The project is based on build-operate-transfer with a concession period of 60 years, the company said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

WCE has secured a government support loan (GSL) of RM2.24 billion to “enhance the viability of the project”. The soft loan will kick off in 2013 at an interest rate of 4.0 per cent per year and an interest subsidy of up to 3.0 per cent from commercial loans for a period of 22 years.

The terms of the GSL and interest subsidy will be finalised by WCE with the Ministry of Finance, Europlus said.

It noted that toll revenue in excess of an agreed traffic volume will be shared on the basis of 70:30 between the government and WCE until full settlement of the GSL and subsequently, 30:70 after the settlement of the GSL.

The government will bear some RM980 million cost to acquire land along the highway construction. WCE, meanwhile, will call for open tenders for main construction works. Proper concession agreement will be signed between WCE and the Works Ministry upon
clearance from the Attorney General.

the federal road 5 from banting till hutan melintang already 4lanes, there to manjung somewhat wide, almost 4 lanes but the road is in terible condition..then from manjung to ipoh is already 4 lanes.. i don't really see the need for a parallel road doing the same,.. might as well use the resources to put flyover, repairs the current road and maybe can get it longer from bp to png..

But the whole stretch is pretty crowded and somewhat dangerous because many buses & heavy trucks use the roads . The new highway cud clear this & stimulate economic boom in coastal Selangor & Perak .
