Yet back then when we had the cluster looking like that (if you could call it a cluster!) We'd have all been saying how ace it looked with the Gherkin and a skyline was forming, and that was with no Heron, or Willis, or even Nido to an extent. Now we're saying how great a cluster we have, come 5 years time we'll be looking back on today's images probably a little embarrassed with our skyline that had no Leadenhall, or Pinnacle, or 100 Bishopgate, no Heron and Fenchurch towers :|. Saying that, I do miss Drapers gardens :( It was a brute (one I never got to see in reality, was a mere few floors remaning when I first visited London), but it did help bridge the height difference between the midrises and highrises.

Amazing how much has changed in just a few short years.

Drapers Gardens gone, Stock Exchange completely re-clad, Heron Tower and Willis Buildings built.

The old Stock Exchange never ceases to astound me in how a building that is so hideous was thought worthy of being constructed in the heart of the city. The re-clad has completely changed the face of the City from that angle. The old concrete building really made the City look drab.

What a difference:

My understanding is that they were damaged on site and are being remanufactured. I noticed last week that a glazing panel was cracked on the south east corner, that was fine only the week before. I know accidents happen, but there are an extraordinary number of issues outstanding here. If you look closely there are a few panels with the sealants missing.

A friend of mine at Skanska seems to be in the middle of a nervous breakdown on this project.

Mind you, I have to say the building does look incredible on the opening credits of the Apprentice!

Lloyds has dated really, really badly. It looks like something I'd expect to see at a steel works in south Wales.

You can't appreciate that, with it being at the centre of a major financial centre?

Heron Tower.... I just don't know. It doesn't have the unity of purpose of the likes of the Gherkin, the Shard, or even Tower 42.

Yes it looks cool from some angles, and its height is great.. but just.. from some angles it looks like a pile of stacked cardboard boxes. Still, it works as part of an ensemble cast I guess, just doesn't have the star quality of others.

So with a building that size they couldn't have made the pavements a little wider?

Bit of an illusion really, the pavement is rather wide - Just that the stainless steel encased columns jut out into the street somewhat, making the pavement look narrow.

See Norwich Jewel's photo, to illustrate my point:

Forgive me if this has already been answered in an earlier post.

I'm supporting every project right now but this one I just don't think enhances London's image at all. If I'm being horribly, brutally honest....it looks like it needs a re-clad already!

That's my last word on Heron now I have seen it in its entirety. Such a shame when it could've been a reflective glass beauty to balance the black (but stylish) look of St Mary's Axe and Tower 42. Just looks like a jigsaw gone a little wrong :( Anyway, if others enjoy this then great, it's just my final judgement having seen it in the flesh close up and from a distance along with these pics.

I do kind-of know what you mean, but I don't think there's much point in anyone getting too bothered about Heron's south face—it's mostly going to be hidden by 100 Bishopsgate anyway.

In fact, I wonder how much less power the PV will generate then?

There are more BLUE LIGHTS appearing every night and Heron's internal lights
on the top floors have been off over the weekend but usually the top floors are quite brightly lit.

Still haven't found the best settings for night shots but I know from photos by chest that this camera model can take excellent night shots in the right hands. Mind you those security lights on Guy's campus are so bright maybe that's the problem.

I can't decide whether I like the blue LED's or not. It's a matter of taste of course, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for the square mile. Possible Canary Wharf? I don't know yet... I think I'll have to see it in person at night to make my mind up.

I quite like the random pattern that's going on, probably not intentional. The spire could do with a few lights further on down, either that or it should be fully lit from it's base.

Staircase looks good though :).

Skydoggy
July 27th, 2011, 01:00 AM
In reality the lights are not quite as bright as the photos suggest. The tower seems to be lit differently each night and can look an utter mess in my opinion. Some evenings it looks beautiful, particularly late dusk. The blue lights currently do not go the full length of the building, just the top 10 or so floors and are often lit in a haphazard fashion.

They seem to be taking an awfully long time to get this building finished!:bash:

I agree with Scalatrava, the staircase looks great.:)

Blue lights go well with lloyds mad light scheme... Scalatrava makes a good point- are the LEDs lit randomly or are some unlit?

Don't want to go off topic, but I've been noticing they have been removing these (I assume bronze) mullions from the crown of T42 at various stages over the past few months revealing the Verdigris green colour that exists beneath, but they then replace them. Not sure what's going on.But the section you refer to certainly did have an image on it a while back.
Back to Heron, I am not overly keen on the Blue LEDs, bit too 'Shanghai' for me (though subtle for Shangers). Blue LEDs seem to be used all over the place. Hopefully once they are all working consistently it will look better.

By the way Anthony, I've loved your recent animations of 'The Place', they always make me chuckle. Brilliant!

T42 and Gherkin both have rather bleak lighting schemes, but Heron is quite the opposite it seems, and those blue lights that are going on there seem rather lone and look as though they need some company. On the render there were some more lights weren't there? or maybe they just haven't installed them yet. Time will tell. Perhaps its just the angle this photo was taken from and the other 3 sides will show more diverse lights.
Another theory I have and now i come to think of it, the building isn't open meaning the rooms are vacated which in turn suggests that there are no bloody lights on except the exterior blue ones of course. Upon looking at the photo again, I can visualise the effect when the room lights will be turned on. I hope you know what I MEAN.
