Marina Bay Sands ropes in external vendors in preparation for opening
15 April 2010 1821 hrs

SINGAPORE: With just two weeks to spare, Marina Bay Sands is gearing up for its opening on April 27.

It has roped in external vendors which have invested millions of dollars to help the Integrated Resort (IR) run with clockwork precision.

For example, a laundry company has been commissioned to not only handle soiled towels once Marina Bay Sands opens, it will also be taking care of all the IR's laundry needs - from guest requirements to F&B, from rooms to staff uniforms.

Marina Bay Sands will have a total staff strength of about 8,000 during its first phase of opening.

The project is so massive that the laundry company has invested S$12 million on new equipment and to set up a new plant in Tuas, in the western part of Singapore.

It has also recruited some additional 50 workers, who have been busy prepping for the IR's opening.

"They actually have to know what are the items coming in, the time, the turnaround, how to manage these products because they are made of different fabrics and things like that," sid Alex Teo, general manager of Zero Spot Laundry Service.

"So there will be some in the laundry, some in the dry cleaning. (The workers also need to know) how do we get it cleaned in the correct manner, how do we press it in a correct manner, how do we hang it in a correct manner and how do we deliver it in a correct manner."

The new plant will be ready by the end of the month solely to serve the needs of Marina Bay Sands, and it is estimated that plant will be handling about 25,000 to 30,000 kilograms of laundry every day.

With Marina Bay Sands coming on board, the company anticipates a yearly revenue of up to S$8 million, about a 50-per-cent growth.

For a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), the project is a coup for Zero Spot Laundry.

"It actually helps our company to grow in the sense that we get a chance to participate in such a project," said Teo. "This helps us to understand the operations of a casino or even the operations of a close to 2,600 room kind of hotel.

"If you are involved in such a mega project I think when you go out overseas, you have a very good profile. It actually brings us to another range of skills. We will have a competitive edge over other companies."

There will be a 24-hour Marina Bay Sands shuttle bus from the airport, running at intervals of 15 minutes during peak periods and 30 minutes during off-peak periods.

Local transport company Sun-Gee Travel has invested S$5 million to buy and retrofit 20 buses that come with special features, such as coloured interior lights and spacious cargo compartments.

Furthermore, the buses can be lowered to make it easier for the elderly to step on board.

The company has also recruited about 50 extra staff, most of them, bus captains.

"We send all of them for the safety courses as well as courtesy courses and at the same time we also let them familiarise with the route," said Neo Chin Keong, director of Sun-Gee Travel.

"With the help of Marina Bay Sands, we hope we can improve our service as well as the quality of our bus captains."

The company, which has a total staff strength of about 130, expects business to grow by up to 30 per cent by servicing the Integrated Resort.

From the lessons learned from the teething problems of the RWS opening, I wonder if there will be a stricter dress-code & screening of visitors to the MBS casino. There's also the smoking/no-smoking areas which I understand will be on different floors. It not hard to differentiate between the foreigners by looks, but MBS would not want to be accused of discrimination. Let's see how the Vegas people do it as compared to the Genting Highland people.

Lee attending conference @ Apr 30, Casino license issuing soon

First event at Marina Bay Sands to take place just days after opening
By Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid | Posted: 19 April 2010 2107 hrs

Marina Bay Sands under construction

SINGAPORE : Singapore's second Integrated resort, Marina Bay Sands is set to host guests taking part in a multi-million dollar conference in less than two weeks.

It is the very first event taking place there. But with some parts of the resort still being under construction, organisers of the event have raised some concerns.

About 1,000 delegates are expected to attend the Inter-Pacific Bar Association 20th Annual Conference that will begin on April 30.

The conference will seek to address climate change and legal practice. The former US vice-president Al Gore and Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew will be among the distinguished speakers.

Organisers said they had decided to host guests at Marina Bay Sands to offer a different and unique experience to them.

Plans were firmed up more than a year ago and organisers were told that the integrated resort will open by September last year or latest, by the start of this year.

The integrated resort is opening in phases, starting on April 27.

And as it's just days before the conference kicks off, the conference organisers have raised concerns about the delegates' experience.

"Our comfort when we originally signed with MBS (Marina Bay Sands) was that they will give us a full five months at the least for the run-in to take place. Right now it has been reduced to a matter of days. And this is of course a very delicate management issue - to make sure that whatever training and staff experience that they have, will be impacting our guests," said Yap Wai Ming, chairman of Organising Committee, IPBA 2010 Singapore.

"There are a lot of things that are not complete but as the day progresses, they have actually put in three shifts - it's a 24-hour schedule that they are putting in. So far, I think they are able to show us some of the progress that they have made. But of course, it is nothing compared to the real thing," he added.

Still, organisers are not leaving anything to chance and they are monitoring developments closely.

"We have been given site visits... We have seen the actual rooms. They look quite fantastic... a class of its own by Singapore standards. (As for) the convention hall, at this point in time, they are still making the finishing touches relating to the decoration. I think it should come up reasonably well," said Yap.

"We are constantly in touch with the management. They told us most of the things are done properly and they have contingency plans in place, in case certain parts are not ready. They have actually given us all those assurances. So fingers crossed, it should turn out as a fantastic conference as they have promised us," he added.

Organisers said another site visit is being scheduled some time this week.

Yeo said Marina Bay Sands has also promised that all construction activities near the hotel and conference hall will stop completely during the course of the conference.

Responding to media queries, Marina Bay Sands said its staff are going through extensive simulation exercises to put them through the paces.

It said it is also working closely with the IPBA's organising committee to ensure a smooth and memorable stay for all delegates and VIPs. - CNA /ls

I still wonder if there is any plan to re-route some of bus services to ply Bayfront Avenue and pick up and drop off passengers at MBS?

don diego 2000
April 19th, 2010, 08:30 PM
According to MBS website (http://www.marinabaysands.com/Corporate/Maps___Directions.aspx#tabs_0_1), the IR will be served by the following bus lines:
* SBS 97/97e: Jurong East to Marina Square (loop)
* SBS 133: Ang Mo Kio Interchange to The Esplanade, Raffles Avenue (loop)
* SBS 502: Pioneer Road North to Marina Square (loop)
* SBS 518: Pasir Ris to Suntec City (loop)
* SMRT 106: Bukit Batok Interchange to Marina Centre Terminal

I haven't taken the time to check whether they were already existing bus services or new ones created, nor what their exact itinerary is.

On the other hand, you can see those new bus stops along Central and Marina boulevards, showing that they definitely plan to have bus services serving this area.

Maybe because the layout makes basement 1 an entrance level? If you look at the store locator, there is nothing much above level 1. I also remember having seen on the retail brochure that the entrance facing the bay would be at a lower level that the entrance facing Bayfront Avenue.

Specialists' Centre to finally go?

Clearer picture seen emerging after award of Somerset Central site

By RASHIWALA

KALPANA (SINGAPORE) The ageing Specialists' Shopping Centre along Orchard Road could finally make way for a new project under proposals to redevelop the site together with the former Glutton's Square plot next door, say sources.

BT understands that the proposals are still being discussed between OCBC Bank, which owns Specialists' Centre and Hotel Phoenix behind it, and Far East Organization, which clinched the former Glutton's Square site at a state tender in January.

'One possibility is OCBC could just contribute its Specialists' site into a joint venture that could develop this site together with Glutton's Square without having to put any cash for the construction. In exchange, the bank gets to hold a stake in the enlarged redevelopment scheme equivalent to the value of its site,' said a market observer.

Originally, OCBC had been talking about a need to merely refurbish Specialists' Centre - which is more than 30 years old - in conjunction with new developments at adjacent plots. Such an approach is favoured by some quarters in the bank who have some sentimental attachment to Specialists' Centre, BT understands. As well, a redevelopment scheme would at best see retention rather than an enhancement of the building's existing gross floor area going by current guidelines - which somewhat reduces the incentive to redevelop.

However, sources say that given that Specialists' Centre is more than 30 years old, its layout and efficiency (ratio of net lettable area to gross floor area) are dated, so it would still make sense to redevelop.

Discussions between Far East and OCBC are likely to be finalised only after the award of another state site, dubbed Somerset Central, on the other side of Specialists' Centre. Part of this site, which is above Somerset MRT Station, is currently being used as a carpark. The tender for Somerset Central closes on Aug 16.

Far East is widely thought to have triggered the release of the Somerset Central plot, which was in the government's reserve list. However, it remains to be seen if it succeeds in clinching the 78,700 sq ft site when the state tender closes in about two months.

If it does, then the latest site will be included in a bigger redevelopment. If, however, another party clinches the plot, it remains to be seen how this affects an OCBC-Far East collaboration on their respective existing sites.

It also remains to be seen if OCBC and Far East agree on including Hotel Phoenix, which faces Somerset Road, in a redevelopment involving Specialists' Centre or if OCBC has to leave Hotel Phoenix standing and refurbish it separately.

Hotel Phoenix is safeguarded for hotel use by the authorities, which means that even if OCBC contributes the property for joint redevelopment with Specialists' Centre and the Glutton's Square site, it has to remain a hotel.

Some market watchers have also been speculating lately whether Far East will team up with Frasers Centrepoint to bid for the Somerest Central site given their recent successful partnership in clinching the Waterfront View residential site in Bedok.

OCBC holds an indirect interest of under 10 per cent in Frasers Centrepoint through the latter's listed parent, Fraser & Neave.

If Far East and Frasers Centrepoint team up again and win the Somerset Central site, it could make for an appropriate partnership involving OCBC, Frasers Centrepoint and Far East for the development of Glutton's Square, Somerset Central and Specialists' Centre - with or without Hotel Phoenix.

This will result in a sizeable retail project boasting prime linear frontage on Orchard Road and with an underground mall linked to Centrepoint Shopping Centre across the road.

A redevelopment of all three sites including Hotel Phoenix can yield a new project with a maximum gross floor area of about 1.3 million square feet based on current guidelines.

However, the developers may even be able to win rights for additional gross floor area from the Urban Redevelopment Authority under an incentive scheme to spur redevelopments on Orchard Road, say property analysts.

Retail market watchers say, however, that the completion of a new project may clash with the opening of Marina Bay Sands in 2009 which is expected to feature about one million sq ft of retail space and boast big new names like Saks Fifth Avenue.

Viewing things more positively, a retail market player says: 'While the jury is out on whether Marina Bay Sands integrated resort will overshadow Orchard Road as Singapore's prime tourist belt, it makes it all the more urgent for owners of ageing Orchard Road buildings like Specialists' Centre to wake up and do something - fast.'

I still wonder if there is any plan to re-route some of bus services to ply Bayfront Avenue and pick up and drop off passengers at MBS?

Road link to upcoming developments in Marina Bay opens this Sunday
By Jessica Yeo |*ChannelNewsAsia.com | 20 April 2010

The new 1.3-kilometre road link to Marina Bay opens on Sunday.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says it will improve road access to upcoming developments such as the Marina Bay Sands and the Marina Bay Financial Centre. The road will provide a direct link between Temasek Avenue and Central Boulevard, as well as Marina Boulevard. It is made up of a bridge across Marina Bay, and a newly constructed Bayfront Avenue.

Eight public bus services will also be re-routed to ply through this network. The buses will commence from Jurong East, Ang Mo Kio, Pioneer Road North, Pasir Ris and Bukit Batok.

The road, which provides an alternative route to the Central Business District, will have an ERP gantry along Bayfront Avenue towards Temasek Avenue starting next Monday, April 26.

Overseas guests arriving at Changi Airport can make use of the Marina Bay Sands Airport Shuttle Bus, which runs over 40 times a day, to get to the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort. There are 15 coaches in total and will run at 10-minute intervals during peak periods.

Parking at the Integrated Resort starts at S$8 per hour and carpooling is advised due to limited parking spaces. Drivers can opt to park at the satellite car park at Marina South and pay $10 for the parking and usage of the Marina Bay Sands shuttle bus.

Commuters can also choose to go on foot via the pedestrian footpath adjacent to the new bridge and Bayfront Avenue.

My take:- Sands has done nothing against law, should issue Casino license soonest as possible.

No licence yet for MBS

Marina Bay Sands may soon have to add another highly publicised delay to its name. MediaCorp has learnt the integrated resort has not received its casino licence, three days to go before its soft opening. And punters are not the only ones who may have to wait.

So far, MBS has received the Temporary Occupation Permit for its hotel up to the 35th storey, its Sands Expo and Convention Centre and casino areas which have been completed, according to the Building and Construction Authority.

The resort had said previously it plans to open 963 hotel rooms (which is up to the 22nd storey), part of the shopping mall and convention centre, celebrity chef restaurants along with other dining outlets and the casino on April 27.

When contacted, an MBS spokeswoman said it was "working tirelessly with the authorities to obtain the necessary approvals to open the property for Phase 1".

But analysts say there is a high chance it will have to go ahead without its casino.

"There may be specific requirements they have to meet and change accordingly after they get the casino license, so some time may be needed to make the changes," said International Club Games Training Center chief executive Ramachandar Siva. He thinks MBS may be "struggling" with, for example, the training and preparation of its staff.

A source close to MBS said one glitch the casino is trying to fix is its surveillance system. "All the cameras must be able to zoom in on the croupiers at all times and the synchronisation is not ready yet. They're not able to capture all tables simultaneously."

The analyst added: "Without the casino licence now, it's a lot of psychological pressure. MBS has sent out many invitations to VIP guests for the opening ... They need to make travel plans, so some of them may not come if they still don't know if the casino will open."

Resorts World Sentosa received its casino licence eight days before its opening on Valentine's Day.

Analysts are divided over how a possible delay of the casino may affect MBS. "It's a very serious matter ... This isn't good for MBS' reputation," said the source close to MBS.

But Chesterton Suntec International research and consultancy director Colin Tan said: "The casino is the least of their worries. They want to make sure their seminar facilities are up to the mark because it's their main selling point here. The casino is more for them to recover their capital ... with a possible delay, maybe they can't meet their expectations this year."

MBS was slated to open at the end of last year but construction woes postponed the opening. Its spokeswoman said MBS is now doing touch-up work on finishes and cleaning works; it is also holding simulation exercises to prepare staff to serve 2,000 guests for its opening.

Its first major event will be the the Inter-Pacific Bar Association 20th Annual Conference and organising committee chairman Yap Wai Ming said: "I'm not worried (that the venue may not be finished in time), but I'm a bit annoyed they're cutting so close to the event. It's affecting our sign-up for the event."

Marina Bay Sands gears up for preview opening next week
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/imagegallery/store/php7qfSSN.jpg

SINGAPORE: Things are heating up at the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort as it gears up for its preview opening on Tuesday.

The integrated resort, the second in Singapore, has been running simulation exercises involving 2,000 guests this week.

It said the hotel, stores and part of the exhibition and convention centre will be open.

The rest of Marina Bay Sands will open in phases with the grand opening on June 23.

The theatres, museum and Crystal Pavilions on Marina Bay will open later in the year.

Meanwhile, the Sands Expo and Convention Center will host its first event from May 2 onwards.

Restaurants, retailers and other tourist attractions in the area said they expect spillover effects from the opening of the integrated resort.

They are hopeful of a 20 per cent increase in business.

Caleb Goi, managing director, The Naturalist, Esplanade Mall, said: "I hope that it will be able to bring more crowds because of the new attractions at the Marina Bay area."http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1052349/1/.html

Marina Bay Sands gets casino licence

SINGAPORE : The Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore has issued a casino licence to Marina Bay Sands.

In a brief statement on its website, the authority said the casino operator must ensure that it remains suitable to manage and operate a casino in accordance with Section 45 of the Casino Control Act.

Marina Bay Sands is due to open its doors on Tuesday.

Staff at the integrated resort are working round the clock, gearing up for the preview opening.

It ran simulation exercises involving 2,000 guests last week to test out its system.

The integrated resort said its hotel rooms, dozens of stores, part of the exhibition and convention centre as well as some restaurants and bars will be open.

The rest of Marina Bay Sands will open in phases.

The Grand Opening will be held in June at the Sands SkyPark above the hotel towers.

The theatres, museum and Crystal Pavilions on Marina Bay will open later in the year.

Meanwhile, the Sands Expo and Convention Center will be hosting its first event from May 2

Just from pictures alone, this project is already look much classier than RWS will ever be! It's just too hawt!

As for the countdown clock thing. I wouldn't rule it out. They'll be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't do it now, because they'll never get the chance to do it again. Unless they chase a few people out of their rooms!

SINGAPORE'S SECOND CASINO OPENS
SINGAPORE, April 27 (NNN-BERNAMA)-- Marina Bay Sands, Singapore's second integrated resort-cum-casino, siutated at downtown Marina Bay here, opens its doors to the public from Tuesday.

In a statement issued here Monday, Marina Bay Sands also announced that the Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore had awarded it the licence to operate a casino in the resort.

This is the second casino licence issued by the authority this year. The first licence was awarded to the Resort World Sentosa, a family-stlye resort which includes not just the casino but also rides and Asia's first Universal Studios theme park.

Located on the offshore island of island of Sentosa, Resorts World is owned by Malaysia's Genting Group, Asia's largest gaming company. Its casino opened for business in February during the peak Chinese New Year travel period.

Marina Bay Sands said it would open the first phase of the resort at 3.18 pm Tuesday with 963 out of the planned 2,560 hotel rooms, a portion of its shopping mall, some restaurants, the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the event plaza and the casino.

The rest of the hotel rooms and suites, the Sands SkyPark and additional shops would be available as part of the grand opening on June 23, the statement said. The museum, theatres and the remainder of the shops would open towards the end of the year.http://www.namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=118241

S'pore opens second casino

SINGAPORE - Singapore threw open the doors of its second casino on Tuesday, giving a fresh boost to the city's tourism sector and raising its profile as a playground for the world's high-rollers.

The Marina Bay Sands casino will offer 600 gaming tables, more than 1,500 slot machines and over 30 private gaming rooms.
The US$5.5 billion Marina Bay Sands, built by US gaming giant Las Vegas Sands, opened at the locally auspicious time of 3.18pm (0718 GMT). The number eight sounds like the word for prosperity in Chinese.

It is Las Vegas Sands' latest big-time bet on the future of Asia's gaming industry and is its first casino in Asia outside Macau.

Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson said he expects to recoup his Singapore investment in five years.

'Most of the high-end players are reputable business people. They have to travel anyway so they typically would travel to the major cities, like Hong Kong and Singapore, wherein they do business,' he told reporters.

Singapore gave the green light for casino gambling in 2005, setting off a flurry of construction that went ahead despite the city-state slipping into recession in 2008 because of the global financial crisis.

Its first casino, the US$4.4 billion Resorts World Sentosa built by Malaysia's Genting Group, opened for business on February 14.

Marina Bay Sands was originally set to open at the end of 2009 but faced repeated delays caused by a number of factors, including material and labour shortages and financial problems due to the downturn.

Tuesday's opening includes the casino and 963 out of 2,560 hotel rooms, a portion of the shopping mall, some restaurants, an exhibition centre and the events plaza.

The remaining hotel rooms and suites, a skypark and more shops will open on June 23, while a museum, theatres and other stores will start operations later in the year, the management said.

Officials hope the casinos will help Singapore achieve a target of attracting 17 million visitors a year generating over US$21 billion by 2015, supporting the services sector and reducing the role of manufacturing in the economy.

'This second casino is another boost to the economy, which has been doing much better,' said economist David Cohen at research house Action Economics.

'It should support tourist arrivals, and the retail sector should benefit from that especially now in the midst of the improving global outlook,' he told AFP.

Singapore's economy surged 13.1 per cent in the first quarter from a year ago, prompting the government to sharply upgrade its growth projection this year to 7-9 per cent from 4.5-6.5 per cent.

Mr Cohen however is projecting higher growth of 9.5 per cent this year.

'Singapore already enjoys a very convenient (global air) transportation network which makes this an attractive place for people to come from around the world,' he said.

Marina Bay Sands is designed to cater to the corporate and convention crowd while Resorts World is aimed at families.

The Marina Bay Sands casino will offer 600 gaming tables, more than 1,500 slot machines and over 30 private gaming rooms. It occupies four floors, the bottom two for mass gaming and the upper section for premium players.

The Resorts World complex, located on Sentosa island, includes Southeast Asia's only Universal Studios movie theme park, hotels, restaurants and convention facilities. --

Disappointment!

The bad:
- Greeting staff at the doors are so jaded saying "Welcome to Marina Bay Sands".
- Shoppes flooring is HORRIBLE!
- The fengshui-inspired "tacky" decor you see at the entrance of Asian casinos is also here.
- Feels very fake-y "cheena"... Like some American don't know anything about Asian design interiors and decided to plug in the stereotypes... aka, the Mao-inspired oversized red tops of the staff.
- Nothing very inspiring about the shops mix

The good:
- From Bayfront Ave looking up to the 3 towers, it's bloody, mind-blowingly impressive
- The corridor's amazing but having seen the "bare look" that was shown in the Discovery YouTube vids that someone posted earlier, it's a lil' underwhelming.
- It's still a lil' tacky but ALOT less tacky than RWS
- The casino size is mind-blowing...

Approaching from the Bayfront Bridge, the Three Towers (Macham Twin Towers Lord of the Ring part 3) looks very imposing and impressive. The skybridge looks really cool like an airship with its rombus pattern cladding.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8269.jpg

The sides of the inclining ram is decorated with shiny reflectors that moves with the wind. The effect is very cool and unique.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8274.jpg

The above massive geometric wire frame sculture is too "thin" for the eyes to see the frame and hence looked messy and unimpressive even though the sculpture is massive.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8278.jpg

The lobby looks cram, and lacked the grandeur and spaceousness featured in the rendering. This part of the walkway seems very narrow especially half of it is block by the 3 white giant 'lanterns'

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8289.jpg

The bridge that linked all the way from the Marina Shoppes to the Three Towers to the future Garden by the Bay. Allowing natural lighting in with glass cladding looks pretty cool

Mercury specks decoration. Seems to lacked a frame . . .
It is simple yet show good taste, but lacked the grand opulance of Wynn Hotels in Vegas.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8279.jpg

Rattan Cloud decoration. Seems to lacked a frame too . . .

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/mle0ng/Marina%20Bay%20Sands/DSCF8288.jpg

A large and most detailed model of the Art Science Museum so far. Would be the most iconic feature of this development.

The Shops in the Marina Bay Shoppes are the usual top brand names, nothing exciting, in fact quite disappointing really. ION has more unique and new brands. The interior of the development looks really under-wham with such impressive exterior. . . The toilets there are HOPELESSLY small. Just 3 cubicles and 2 seats, don't even cater to handicapped.

Overall - fantastic on the outside, but so-so on the inside

Marina Bay Sands (MBS), which soft opened yesterday in Singapore's Central Business District, expects to reap the return on its US$5.5 billion investment in the next five years.

Top officials present at the opening admitted, however, that with less than three percent of the resort's 581,400sqm gross floor area designated to the casino, it is unlikely that gaming will be MBS' primary source of income.

"We expect the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) business to grow the most dramatically (and) to eventually contribute 50 percent or more to our business," said MBS president and CEO Thomas Arasi. "We have the goods to deliver exceptional meetings and events – flexible facilities and hotels as well as a whole new level of shopping, entertainment and F&B experiences."

To date, over 160 events have been booked at the 120,000sqm The Sands Expo and Convention Center, which are expected to draw more than 250,000 visitors to the resort.

Arasi said that MBS has identified five market segments. Besides MICE groups, potential top drawers to the resort are corporates and travel and tours. Gaming is fourth and others come last.

When fully operational, the integrated resort expects visitor numbers to reach between 70,000 and 80,000 daily.

Now available during the first phase of opening are 963 hotel rooms, parts of the shopping mall and convention centre, some restaurants and bars, the Event Plaza along Marina Bay and the casino. On June 23, during the official grand opening, the rest of the property's 2,560 hotel rooms, shopping outlets, F&B and nightlife offerings will start operating.

The iconic Sands Skypark on top the three hotels, spanning their entire length, will also open on June 23.

Later this year, the resort's two theatres will be launched. One will be the permanent home of Disney's The Lion King show, while the other will host special events and other headline acts. The museum will be unveiled at the end of the year.

Quick lunchtime visit today at MBS. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, I took them from my camera.

The Shoppes

http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/uu22/don_diego_2000/IMG_0796.jpg

I found The Shoppes quite nice, especially bright, even when you are at basement 2

The section opened Tuesday is still very small and many shops are not open yet. Moreover, it still looks a bit like a construction site, with the noise and the dust.

http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/uu22/don_diego_2000/IMG_0799.jpg

Nevertheless, it really looks promising, and I'm looking forward to the completion!

Casino

The casino is really impressive. It has several entrances on the shopping mall, as well as a direct link to the hotel underneath Bayfront Avenue.

The lobby on the hotel entrance is beautiful. The marble floor is shining!

Hotel

The 2 sides of the Tower 1 are much closer at the 22nd floor, and the pathways above the atrium are thus much shorter :)

You have to be inside the casino to have this view. It is from the second level of gaming open to everyone (the 2 floors above are for VIP only)

You can take a glimpse of the casino interior from outside the gates, but only the entrances at the main gaming floor are open at the moment.

oh my.. looking at the casino from the second level has a kind of "matrix" feel to it... sorta like punters being attached to "pods" and getting their "money" sucked out by machines lol

Singapore's two new casinos are probably the only ones in the world that discriminate against its own citizens with a ridiculous anti-gambling levy and humiliating gantry-like "check in" procedures. Foreigers get to walk in and out freely. In most other countries, the reverse happens. If you really wanna blow some money on casinos, you're better off going to other casinos around the region, where you are actually treated like responsible adults who can actually think for themselves, or paying tourists where your money is more appreciated. I say skip the casino and head for the shoppes (if they are that good in the first place).
Sorry if my comments offend anyone still basking in the euphoria of the opening... but it's the truth.

Well, I think they are trying to appease some groups especially the more conservative lot. Seriously, with what happened in Macau with rising number of people in debt, I guess it is a way to limit the number of Singaporeans going in. At the same time earning more money from those who are willing to pay.:)

Off-topic: I for one would never go to a casino and have never gambled before as I think it is a waste of money. Besides it is against my religion.....

Yes Sir ... it IS discriminatory .. however in the 1980's I remember Sri Lanka BANNED its nationals from Colombo Casinos .. only foreign passport holder were allowed ... further a Sg taxi driver told me that in Macau , nationals of China can only visit once a month (or some other time restrictions )...

I totally agree with what you said and visited & played quite a few casino around the world. Guest they try to avoid a possible crowded place if no levy into casino....hopefully things would change in long term. Good for those serious players to participate if not so crowded.

They should put up huge sign at the entrance stating that in casino you can win or loose and only gamble with the money you can affort. Decision is up to individual and i'm sure most are matured enough to understand the risks.

My opinion only and not to offend anyone. :)

I understand your comments.

But I have been to casino here and had seen those old uncles and aunties (some locals, many from malaysia) played and heard them complained about how much saving they had drained.

I do seriously think and agree that some forms of control is necessary to help filter out some "immature gamblers" that do damages they or their families cannot afford.

Well.... lets see.. the charges for entry are a mere $100 soooooooo IF & WHEN MBS & RWS need more local customers the casinos should offer to reimburse the fee paying locals with $ 100 worth of chips &/or food &/or drinks &/or ????
That will make everybody (except the gahment) very happy happy

I'm more concern on the queuing and waiting time vs the foreigners (i'm one of them :-)). Less concern on the $100 when you win more from the dealer.

Must catch up with you for a  in MBS :)

36,000 visitors in 24 hours
By Lim Wei Chean | StraitsTimes.com

More than 36,000 visitors thronged Marina Bay Sands in its first 24 hours of operations.

The US$5.5 billion resort opened its first phase on Tuesday with 963 rooms, 10 per cent of the shops at its mall, part of the meetings and conventions centre, the outdoor public events plaza and the casino.

MBS did not reveal numbers for the visitors to its casino. In contrast, Resorts World Sentosa saw 35,000 visitors to its casino alone on the first two days of operation after it opened on Feb 14.

Some 4,000 people came before the auspicious 3.18pm opening to be among the first to enter the casino and witness the opening ceremony.

Mr Sheldon Adelson, chief executive officer of MBS parent company Las Vegas Sands, expects to recoup his Singapore investment within five years.

Gd for punters...more spacious...less queue at cashiers...no q at toilets(hooray), impressive design of 4 storey high ceiling with many entrances/exits. However, less crowded as compared to RWS....is it a gd sign? r they making enuff $ to achieve their ambitious plan to breakeven in 5yrs?

I really hope to see more punters patronising coming this wkend! More foreigners COME PLS!

Let me give you a hint why Sand opened this week.......

It's Labour Day !!!

The key is China's Golden Week !

Stock in China so dull ....
Property in China so dull ....

So ? Where to spend the RMB ?

The flood of Chinese from China will flood into Singapore and Macau !

Also, the Japanese Golden week as well for the next 5 days..... come and play !

Marina Bay Sands experiences blackout among other teething problems
By Teo Xuanwei / Clement Mesenas | Posted: 04 May 2010 2208 hrs

SINGAPORE: The recently opened Marina Bay Sands integrated resort experienced an embarrassing hiccup Tuesday.

While the Chief Justice of New South Wales was speaking at a legal conference, stage lights went out and the sound system went dead.

It was a blackout which did not amuse the audience.

MediaCorp learnt several members left while those who stayed were moved to a smaller conference hall.

Tuesday's fiasco is not the first to plague the integrated resort.

A number of delegates who'd checked into the hotel last week complained of air conditioners not working, luggage delivered to rooms two hours after check-in, and toilets that did not flush.

Some delegates were even trapped in lifts for up to 20 minutes.

An organiser of the legal conference said the facilities have not been up to expectations.

A spokesperson said they've been working with the organisers to ensure the success of the legal conference.

Everything want to be in mad rush...how to ensure no hiccup....? Same to RWS. The two IR are under tremendous pressure to recoup their investments, after biting the expensive bail from SG govt to invest here.

I expected hiccups. Ultimately majority (if not all) of big project will see some problems upon completion that will have to be touched up in the first few weeks/months. Even HKIA wasn't free of that.

Leader of MBS has his duty to promote the thing.

Flushes, electricity blackout and air conditioning in some rooms are minor flaws since they can be fixed rapidly. As long as the fundamental design is fine you cannot say the MBS is a failure so rapidly.

Gahment is NEVER the loser ---the poor tax payers of Sg are the ultimate losers :ohno:

I understand that there are agreements between LVS and the developer to fix the faulty items? Even if no, I doubt the government will have to spend any taxpayers money on it. The operator will have to.

MBS failed on promise

ORGANISERS of the first conference held at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) are looking into taking action against the integrated (IR) resort for the problems which plagued the event from the word go.

They say MBS failed to deliver the 'unmatched guest experience' it promised when it first signed the deal early last year .

Mr Yap Wai Ming, chairman of this year's organising committee for the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) Conference, said they will take stock of all the things that went wrong before meeting MBS to discuss the issue. He did not give a date for the meeting.

The IPBA conference, a prestigious meeting of lawyers now into its 20th year, was the first event hosted at the IR, which threw open its doors last Tuesday after months of delay.

More than 1,000 lawyers and judges from all over the world, including the United States, Japan and Chile, attended the meet, which started on Sunday and ended on Wednesday.

By the time it was over, delegates had compiled a long list of complaints about MBS, ranging from minor irritations to major flaws.

Whether MBS is a success or failure is dependent on whether it can draw the crowds in the long run. Can't say MBS is a loser just because it has initial teething problems. It is even more ridiculous to suggest that the government or the tax payers is the loser.

"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" was an understandable cry from a young man who had worked his socks off for the Almighty only to be informed that he was about to be nailed to a giant wooden cross and left to die. Job's wife's pithier suggestion to "Curse God and die!" also made perfect sense once God had allowed Satan to wipe out his family and cover his body with sores. :bash:In the end, however, with Middle Eastern Monty Python grit, he continued to "look on the bright side". :)

When disaster strikes, most of us no longer have a God to curse or praise. And the stiff upper lip, and the Dunkirk spirit, seem to have faded as our sense of entitlement has grown. We have to blame someone, and so we blame the Government. Anger is a normal response to trauma, of course, and there's no doubt that teething troubles are trauma. I'd want to blame someone, too

Junkets could give S'pore casinos a miss

But LVS chairman Adelson is unfazed as D-Day nears

By ARTHUR SIM

(SINGAPORE) Las Vegas Sands (LVS), which is in the midst of applying for its casino licence for Marina Bay Sands (MBS), may not have the help of junket operators when it opens in April.

Junket operators help generate almost 70 per cent of gaming revenue in Macau, but LVS chairman Sheldon Adelson said: 'I don't think the (Singapore) government is going to allow any junkets,' he added.

Mr Adelson was speaking at a press conference here yesterday, where he also revealed that MBS will now open in the second quarter of 2010 instead of the first.

He did not elaborate on the junkets and whether he believes the government intends to either directly or indirectly stop operators from coming here but he did say: 'First of all, I don't think the junket reps (representatives) are going to apply for licences. There may be one or two - but the government has said they don't want the Macau style junket reps that take a very large percentage of the gross income.'

A check with the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) reveals there is no ban on junkets as the Casino Control Act provides for the licensing of junket operators. 'The Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore is currently at an advanced stage of finalising the regulations which will spell out details on the junket licensing regime. Junket operators which meet the regulatory requirements under the Act and these regulations would be allowed to operate in Singapore,' a CRA spokesman said.

Mr Adelson is unfazed about the loss of junkets - even if this may increase the risks that LVS will have to assume as junket operators often provide credit to gamblers.

Saying that LVS has its own high-roller clientele, he said: 'We want to be in the business of doing business directly with players. We will supply the credit and we will take our chances on the credit and collections.'

He said LVS's high-roller clients are eagerly waiting the opening of MBS. 'There are reasons why people don't want to gamble in some places and one of the reasons is that it is against their social mores. If I go to Macau, and I am from Taiwan, some of my friends that know me can see me and I don't want them to see me. So I rather go somewhere far away where there is a lesser chance where people will see me - or maybe where the government will see me,' explained Mr Adelson.

He said that LVS currently has about 'five plane loads of two 747s' that are flying to its Las Vegas casinos with Asian high-rollers. 'Two trips come from KL, one trip from Singapore, one trip from Bangkok, one from Jakarta and one from Hong Kong. And they all say that they are waiting for Singapore to open,' he added.

Mr Adelson also said LVS expects to rake in about US$1 billion annually before deducting interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation expenses. 'The people in the market have come out to between US$400 million and US$800 million,' he added.

UOB Kay Hian analyst Vincent Khoo does believe the market, 'has been too optimistic about the junket market'.

'Some Macau junket operators are exploring Singapore, but admit that it's tough to be approved and the business model will be inferior. I believe that Singapore will allow junkets to act as introducers and financiers, but there will be no profit sharing and they must abide by the Junket Act's strict rules. But the market seems to completely ignore this pressing issue,' he added.

Like Mr Adelson, Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Melvyn Boey believes junket operators will not be that important here. By his estimates, VIP clients will account for about 50 per cent of the business at the Singapore casinos. But of these VIP clients, only about 30 per cent might be expected to be brought in by junket operators with most being 'in-house VIP clients'. So even if there are no junket operators in Singapore, Mr Boey believes the impact on business is 'unlikely to be significant'.

On the delayed opening, Mr Adelson said: 'We are happy to see Genting open first.' But this will not be an advantage. He said: 'Mistakes will be made, by them or us. Let them open first and we will see what mistakes they make and we will correct them. You don't get a gold star for being the first one to open.'

Marina Bay Sands could see return on capital investment in 5 years
By Rachel Kelly, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 21 December 2009 1753 hrs

SINGAPORE: The upcoming Marina Bay Sands integrated resort in Singapore could break even at the operating level within the first or second month of opening. This bullish forecast was given by Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson.

He said the resort is set to open at the end of March 2010 although it could be delayed by a couple of weeks.

When fully completed, the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort will boast of more than just a Las Vegas style casino.

The complex will have two theatres, a museum, an exhibition centre, a 2,600-room hotel, and luxury shopping and dining facilities.

Marina Bay Sands is set to open at the end of March or early April 2010, with about 50 per cent of its facilities ready. These include the casino and most of the restaurants.

The rest of the resort will be completed 60 days after the first phase, except for the museum and theatre, which are due to open at the end of 2010. This puts the resort behind its original target of end-2009, but Las Vegas Sands said quality is of utmost importance.

Sheldon Adelson, CEO, Las Vegas Sands, said: "I think what's more important is the quality of what we are doing, the fundamental business strategy, and how we are going to succeed.

"Whether or not it's delayed, this is just a red herring issue. It's not going to be open until it's right and because we are in it for the long term. We are not going to rush to open something when its not ready."

Training for staff is expected to commence early next year.

There will be in the region of 12,000 to 13,000 staff at the integrated resort, some 85 per cent of whom will be Singaporeans. But the percentage is expected to move down to 70 per cent as the project progresses due to the high number of entry level positions.

Las Vegas Sands said there are no plans yet to list the Marina Bay integrated resort. It is optimistic about the outlook, expecting to the return on capital investment in 5 years.

Mr Adelson said: "You can’t write off your whole capital cost. We did when we opened the Sands in Macau, we got back our entire investment in one year. Now this investment is too high, it's US$5.5 billion so it makes sense that we are not going to get that back in a year. But if we get that back within 5 years’ we'll be happy."

Sands said it is also in discussions with parties for further projects around the region, including Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Malaysia. - CNA/vm

Just visited MBS today and i wasnt really impressed by its interior design apart from its Hotels and Casino. One of the toilet especially is pathetically cramped, can fit only 5-6 guys with just 2-3 urinals and 2 cubicles. Worse than i thought.

The only thing i liked thus far are the hotels. It gives one impress that its a plush hotel via the carpetted flooring per floor and the lighting that accompanies the sides of some doors.

If there is lift car travelling to the skypark, that must be the lift motor room.

And this must be the strongest structure of the building.

And I believe you will need some highest point for the lightning arrestor....and maybe some satellite disc....maybe for some antennae...

That's right it is the core of the lift cars at both tower 1 and 3 and thus the motor rooms. If not how on earth to reach 57 storeys from ground floor. Besides housing the lift motor rooms, I believe there are restaurants extensions on both sides, so are the highest restaurants on the MBS.

well, the engineering side of it is one thing but that does give a rude shock to the entire beauty of the MBS, i really wasn't expecting that.

anything engineering can be sorted out but that 2 blocks wasn't seem anywhere on the scale models or any schematic that has thus far been publish i reckon??
