If you been to the Voyage de la Vie, the theater at RWS for that resident show beat this 3x, although its grand ballroom (not for the resident show) are quite lousy fitting.

I would think that both theatres look alike at MBS. They are the same size according to this map that was shown during the construction.

Rectification...

From MBS website:
The Sands Theater will be home to award-winning Broadway musical THE LION KING with the capacity to host up to 1,680 guests on two levels. The Grand Theater, which will stage a wide-range of headlining acts, performing arts and gala events will seat up to 2,155 guests over three levels.

So, the Grand Theater is indeed bigger than the one I went in and has apparently a different design with an extra level. The Lion King will be staged in the theater I took pictures of.

In order to compare, Esplanade theater has about 2,000 seats and Festive Theater at RWS has approx. 1,600 seats.

If i'm not wrong, Esplanade has 3 levels also but some seats have really bad views of the stage area.

Brief power outage at Sands Theater interrupts performance
Sat, Dec 04, 2010
AsiaOne

SINGAPORE - Marina Bay Sands (MBS) confirms that The Sands Theater experienced a brief power disruption during the Riverdance matinee performance today.

Padraic Moyles, lead dancer of Riverdance tweeted this afternoon at about 3pm that there was a power outage at the Sands Theater at MBS that lasted for 10 minutes.

The show stopped midway during a matinee performance.

Click here to find out more!
Moyles was not performing during this show.

He tweeted: "Just lost power during the matinee performance of Riverdance in Singapore. The show has stopped midway through the American Wake (one of the show segments)."

In a statement to AsiaOne, MBS said: "The entire Marina Bay Sands team worked closely and swiftly with the Riverdance technical crew to restore the power supply.

"The show continued successfully after the 10-minute break."

This confirms Moyles' earlier tweets. He wrote:

"The Riverdance crew working hard to get it back up and running. Looks like we are about to start where we left off. Good fast work crew."

"Good news. The Riverdance matinee show is back on in Singapore. The power is back and the show is up and running again. Well done Crew."

The statement also stated: "MBS apologises for the inconvenience caused and is grateful for the support received from members of the audience. We are investigating the cause of the power disruption."

seems that the theater isn't really grand. Been to Resorts World Sentosa's Festive Grand, and I agree that RWS use of wood and darker colours make it more classy and nice compared to sands theater.

i guess the construction on the theaters were also rushed? since the exterior roof for the theater isn't completed yet. And the power outage is like an opening gift to everything new at sands. First at the debut event for its expo hall, now for the debut performance at its theater.

^^I think Marina Bay Sands was going for a more classy modern feel while RWS was going for something more resort style. Overall i think MBS is nicer.:)

A culinary high

NEW RESTAURANT
Sky on 57
Marina Bay Sands 10 Bayfront Avenue
Tel: 6688-8857
www.marinabaysands.com

JUSTIN Quek is the pioneering chef who first put Singapore on the fine-dining map, and in the seven years since he left to showcase his elegant brand of French cuisine in Shanghai, Taipei and Hong Kong, he has continued to extol the culinary virtues of Singapore, Inc. Now, the native son has returned at the helm of a new restaurant that perfectly encapsulates his views on Modern Singapore cuisine.

'Views' is also the operative word when describing Sky on 57, Quek's seriously impressive all-day-dining restaurant atop Tower One of the Marina Bay Sands. It is a culinary perch with mesmerising vistas over much of what defines modern-day Singapore - Marina Bay and the skyscrapers of the Central Business District on one side, the port area and the coastal stretch leading to Changi Airport on another - and Quek has produced a menu that will appeal to most palates while doing justice to the location.

Unlike most other high-altitude dining spots in the city, Sky on 57 has the benefit of a terrace that wraps around the entire restaurant, which occupies the Western end (Quek calls it the stern) of the giant platform that straddles the three towers of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Being open to the elements adds a different dimension to the experience and - as reinforced by the crowds willing to pay $20 for the privilege of enjoying the open-air views at the adjacent SkyPark - is well worth the price of admission (there is a minimum charge of $30 at the restaurant).

As the de facto all-purpose restaurant at the Sands and open for breakfast through to late-night supper, Sky on 57 might be considered the equivalent of the informal 'coffee house' at other top hotels - and its a la carte prices are pegged at those levels - but its lofty location gives it an edge that is tough to beat. With a 10,000 sq ft space and 240 seats (including 90 outdoors) to fill, Sky on 57 won't be mistaken for an intimate French eatery anytime soon, yet Quek is looking forward to the challenge.

'Here, we try to promote Asia,' says Quek, who plans to spend about three-quarters of his time in Singapore (he has two restaurants in Taipei). 'My background is in French cooking, but with Asian touches, and the food is very simple - it's about using the best ingredients, technique and flavour.'

There are luxury touches - Limoges tableware, hand-painted display plates at the VIP tables (including a Power Table with a Power View, of course) and golden jeroboams of Armand de Brignac champagne - but there is also a down-to-earth element in the cuisine. An abbreviated menu is currently available but Quek says that when the restaurant is operating at full steam, the complete menu will be versatile enough to cater to all tastes.

'We want to showcase Singapore, so there will be laksa, chicken rice and bak kut teh - done my way - but if you want a degustation menu I will be happy to prepare that for you as well,' he says. 'You just sit down and enjoy and let me tell you a (food) story - leave it all to me.'

At present, there are two tasting menus available ($168 for four courses and $268 for six courses) but dishes can also be ordered a la carte style. Tea and supper menus are still being finalised, while the morning menu includes a luxury breakfast of Beluga caviar (30 gm), scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, priced at $408. A white truffle breakfast, and local breakfast, is also available. A daily set lunch ($28.80) should also be available by this week.

At a recent dinner tasting session, Quek gave a preview of what to expect. It started with a prettily arranged Mosaic of seafood, thinly-sliced discs of scallop and salmon carpaccio, smoked eel and tuna, served with micro herbs and a citrus dressing. Next came the updated version of Quek's delicious signature dish - foie gras xiao long bao with truffle consomme and celeriac foam.

This was followed by a dish that Quek has named Lobster Marco Polo - a clean and light rendering of thin egg pasta and chunks of lobster mixed with home-made XO sauce. Then came a roasted Nordic turbot dish, surf and turf in the form of Maine lobster in black pepper sauce and pan-grilled US tenderloin and finally, Quek's interpretation of crab bee hoon - Nordic king crab leg and vermicelli, served in a delicate and very tasty light ginger broth. 'It's all about the finesse,' he says.

A Symphony of Dessert - mini portions of various items - confirmed that Quek has come up with an eclectic and upgraded menu of hometown favourites along with dishes that have been tweaked and given the JQ touch. 'The food is simple but I am inspired by Asia,' he says. 'We're here to provide good food in a setting that people can enjoy, and when you see the view, you just feel your spirit being lifted.'

By Geoffrey Eu

The restaurant plans to be fully operational this week, with opening hours from 7am to 3am. Please call to make reservations and check on menu availability.

MBS sues for alleged non-payment of credit extension
By Ng Jing Yng | Posted: 07 December 2010 0851 hrs

SINGAPORE: Marina Bay Sands (MBS) is suing a casino patron it describes as a "premium" player for alleged non-payment of $240,868 in credit extension but the man is disputing its claim that he owes it money.

In the first legal suit of its kind here, MBS claims it had extended credit to 30-year-old Lester Ong Boon Lin as he was a premium player with a minimum deposit of $100,000 with the casino.

According to court documents filed by MBS, Mr Ong applied for a S$1 million credit extension in May and presented a cheque of an unknown amount to the casino as a form of security.

MBS then decided to extend S$250,000 in casino chips to Mr Ong and both parties allegedly entered an agreement documenting this. It was not stated in the documents why MBS was not demanding the repayment of the full sum.

Mr Ong is denying these claims, saying he was not a premium player as he had withdrawn the S$100,000 deposit to buy gambling chips before credit was extended to him.

In his defence filed by lawyer Sunil Singh Panoo of Messrs Dhillon & Partners, Mr Ong further contends that the MBS is deemed to be a moneylender under the law as it had extended credit to a non-premium member. He argues that the credit extended is "unenforceable and not recoverable" since MBS is not a licensed moneylender.

Mr Ong also denies that agreements had been made between him and MBS. He claims that the credit extended to him was an unsolicited offer.

Court papers showed that MBS first filed its writ of summons against Mr Ong on Oct 14, after failing to encash his cheque and unsuccessful attempts to seek payment from him.

Following Mr Ong's defence, the MBS' reply -- filed by lawyers Surenthiraraj Saunthararajah and Toh Wei Yi of Harry Elias Partnership -- reiterates that Mr Ong had deposited S$100,000 cash to qualify as a premium player before credit was given to him.

It said that S$250,000 worth of casino chips would not have been offered in the absence of an agreement between the two parties.

The MBS also alleges that Mr Ong has never denied the debt when it tried to seek payment from him from May to August.

He had also made various proposals for repayment.

The MBS is seeking at least S$250,000 -- the minimum for a High Court case -- in damages and cost.

S'pore to become Asia's 2nd largest casino gaming market by 2011
Posted: 07 December 2010 1848 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore to overtake Australia and South Korea in casino gaming revenue by 2011.

Singapore will overtake Australia and South Korea by next year to become Asia's second largest casino gaming market after Macau, according to a new report from consultants PwC.

It projected Singapore's revenues to hit US$2.8 billion in 2010 and US$5.5 billion in 2011. This would mean that by next year, Singapore's share of the market would leapfrog Australia's US$2.8 billion and South Korea's US$2.5 billion, to be the second largest in the Asia Pacific behind Macau's US$28.4 billion.

"Singapore has made a dramatic entry to the casino gaming market," said Greg Unsworth, PwC Singapore's Technology, Infocomm, Entertainment & Media Industry Leader.

He said a booming tourism industry along with the first full year of operation for both the integrated resorts in 2011 would help Singapore achieve the revenue that are expected to reach US$8.3 billion by 2014.

IR restaurants raking in the moolah
By Kai Fong – December 8th, 2010

IR restaurants are seeing record profits, despite soaring rentals (Getty Images).

Gamblers are apparently not the only ones hitting the jackpot at casinos – restaurateurs are striking it big at both integrated resorts (IR) too.

Eateries at the both of Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, be it casual dining outlets or high-end restaurants, are reporting full-houses and reservations that run weeks in advance, according to The Straits Times (ST).

Already, owners are recouping the overwhelming rental costs, with some even making profits of as much as 25 per cent per month.

Rents at the two IRs range from about $25 to $35 per sq ft (psf) depending on the concept and the size of the eatery, against $15 to $20 psf at prime shopping centres in Orchard Road, says industry observers. This could easily mean a monthly rent of about $125,000.

But crowds drawn by the IRs’ many leisure attractions are fuelling a surge in restaurant revenue. Diners range from high-rollers and businessmen to families and holidaymakers. Of this crowd, more than half are Singaporeans.

Better yet, eateries at the IRs say they’ve been raking in profits without having to resort to overpricing their items.

“Our customers may not worry about the price but we believe in offering them good value,” says Mr Sho Naganuma, executive chief at the swish Japanese restaurant Hide Yamamoto at Marine Bay Sands (MBS).

Its lunch sets start from $70 for a five-course teppanyaki meal. With more than 170 discerning diners packing the 128-seat restaurant on weekends, Mr Naganuma is even considering opening another restaurant at MBS.

High rollers and businessmen who willingly splurge on top-end ingredients after having a good run at the casino tables also boost the bottom line for restaurants.

At Chinese restaurant Jin Shan at MBS for instance, a 1kg premium sultan fish costs about $1,000 while a 2kg ikan empurau is priced at around $2,000.

Says Mr Chris Lim, 36, chief executive officer of a gold mining company who regularly entertains business clients at Jin Shan, “One of the advantages of dining at MBS is that after dinner, I can bring my guests up to the SkyPark to enjoy the night view of Singapore.”

And it’s not just the high-end restaurants that are cashing in.

Chinese fast-food restaurant Ruyi at RWS, which serves rice and noodles dishes at below $9, has also been profitable right from the start.

RWS, which is estimated to draw 13 million visitors annually, also said its restaurants are 70 per cent full on weekdays and “close to full house” on weekends.

Executive sous chef Li Kwok Kwong of Chinese fine-dining restaurant, Feng Shui Inn at RWS, even said a party of high rollers splurged over S$10,000 at the restaurant.

Restaurant owners expect business to get even better in the upcoming festive months as the IRs unveil more crowd-pulling attractions, including the skating rink at MBS and the Crane Dance, a light, sound and water show at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

Man rescued from burning crane
Dec 19, 2010

A FIRE broke out at the construction site of the ArtScience Museum at the Marina Bay Sands on Saturday evening.

A worker was standing on a crane platform, painting the facade of the building when the blaze started beside him, reported the Straits Times.

He leapt onto the arm supporting the platform, before workers went on a separate crane to rescue him.

The man was unhurt.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call at 6.30pm about the fire and arrived at the scene seven minutes later. The fire had already been put out by then.

When contacted by STOMP, the SCDF said the facade of the Marina Bay Sands ArtScience Museum which is undergoing construction was on fire. The cause of the fire is unknown. -- ASIAONE

Went to marina bay sands today. the skating ring wasn't really crowded, but the rasapura masters food court was. not sure what the skating ring floor is made of. seems to look like normal tiles to me. will post up photos soon.

From today's Business Times, full page article. ArtScience Museum will open on Feb 17, 1.18pm.

ArtScience lotus unfolds

http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2010-12-24/artscience24.jpg

Shaped like a lotus bud in mid-blossom, the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands opening on Feb 17 next year, is the only cultural symbol in the world that bridges two opposites - art and science, report WOON TAI HO and JAIME EE

ON FEB 17, at precisely 1.18pm, Singapore will experience a couple of firsts - the opening of the city's largest private museum right smack in the middle of town, and the world's only institution dedicated to bridging two cultural opposites - art and science.

The ArtScience Museum is the final piece of the puzzle that completes Singapore's mega-entertainment complex, Marina Bay Sands. After a turn at the roulette wheel, some serious shopping and celebrity dining, the ArtScience Museum tempers one's hedonistic compulsions with some world-class exhibits inspired by the poster boy of art and science, Leonardo da Vinci.

The artist/scientist's Flying Machine, is already set to be one of the main attractions - part of a constellation of large hanging objects representing the union of art and science that forms the heart and soul of this museum.

'Singapore is already fast becoming the exchange capital of the world in finance, culture and knowledge,' says MBS president and CEO, Thomas Arasi. 'With the ArtScience Museum, we will deliver an internationally renowned forum for the exchange of the latest creative ideas and theories. This is Singapore's gift to the world, and the city's new great cultural symbol.'

The museum is the first purposebuilt structure of its kind, unlike the city's government-funded museums housed in restored heritage buildings. The task of creating a structure that would itself become a conversation piece as well known for its design as its contents, fell to the Israeli-born architect Moshe Safdi.

'When we were commissioned, the key pre-requisites were - it has to be a cultural building; and an iconic symbol of Singapore at the same time,' says Safdie, recalling his brief. 'For an architect, you design and build something, then you are lucky that it sometimes turns out to be iconic. Here it is the reverse, it HAS to be iconic. If that's not a challenge, I don't know what is.'

The result is a distinctive, bowl-shaped structure, fashioned like a bud in mid-blossom. 'It resembles a lotus, but it is also referred to as a 10-fingered welcoming hand,' says Safdie.

'Think Guggenheim meets the Sydney Opera House,' interjects Tom Zaller, the museum director tasked to turn the staggering expectations for the museum into reality. With a messenger bag slung casually across his shoulder and matinee idol looks, Zaller seems to offer the right mixture of American bravado and cultural savvy to turn the ArtScience Museum into a living, breathing entity that will take art out of its bourgeois environment and into the mainstream without compromising on gravitas.

He certainly has the right credentials. A 20-year veteran of the entertainment and exhibition industry, Zaller has overseen sell-out blockbuster exhibitions like Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, BODIES...The Exhibition, Star Trek: The Exhibition and the highly acclaimed Dialog in the Dark. The Titanic exhibition, for example, spawned over 100 international and domestic versions, attracting over 24 million visitors worldwide.

Zaller, who is also president and CEO of Imagine Exhibitions, Inc, sees ArtScience Museum as a unique opportunity to fully engage, entertain and provide a content-rich environment unlike anything seen before.

'I am attracted to ArtScience because it is the first of its kind in the world,' he says. 'Understanding the discipline of science is the foundation of everything alive. What distinguishes us from other species is our intelligence - we are capable of creating.'

The museum, then, will 'showcase this power of creativity as it is manifested in the world of art and science,' he adds. 'By demonstrating how creative minds fuse art and science to make objects that transform our world, visitors get to experience the creative process across three unique spaces: Curiosity, Inspiration and Expression.'

Those are the also the key words used for the museum's galleries that will house its permanent exhibitions. 'Curiosity' is a space of suspended translucent scrolls along the 'floating stairs' - designed to invoke a sense of wonder at how art and science can be merged.

'Inspiration' houses the Flying Machine and a Kongming lantern - traditional Asian airborne lantern - among others, complete with touchscreens that allow visitors to design their own works.

Altogether, the permanent exhibition takes up a total area of 800 sq m and each 'finger' of the museum provides unique gallery spaces.

'Expression' is located in the tallest finger, reaching over 60m above ground. The sweeping upward curve features a media presentation on a wall of LCD screens that documents the whole art/science creative process - themes such as Architecture, Flight, Nanotechnology, Robotics - recalling the great minds that have bridged the art and science divide from the past to the present.

The rest of the exhibition space is in the main galleries in the subterrenean level, as well as the upper galleries on the third floor. They will host marquee exhibitions curated by leading museums and collections from around the world and Singapore. With such a huge space, the main galleries can have many exhibitions going on at the same time. And these exhibitions will change every three to six months, so that there will always be something new for the visitor.

The ultimate aim that MBS expects Zaller to achieve is to create a museum-going class in Singapore. They know he is capable of making a museum approachable, welcoming and friendly. 'When you mention 'museum', there is no appeal to the mainstream, especially young people,' says Zaller. 'It is a place to store relics, to document history.

'For this museum, we are telling people you don't have to have a degree to appreciate a museum. Once you are in, you know this is no ordinary museum; it incorporates cutting-edge museum technology and interactivity. We plan to make the experience not only engaging and fun; we want visitors to come back again and again.'

Even the building itself - with a floor area of 50,000 sq ft, is an expression of art and science, says Zaller. 'The structure's form is an aesthetic result of mathematical laws. By leveraging the unique architecture of the various gallery spaces, we are able to build a conducive environment that integrates seamlessly the ArtScience narrative, and reinforces the meaning and symbolism behind each of the three themes.'

With Zaller keeping mum on the details of the exhibitions he is curating for ArtScience museum, industry observers are unsure what to expect or just how big an impact it will have on the local arts scene.

Michael Koh, CEO of the National Heritage Board (NHB) is intrigued by the building and is looking forward to its first exhibition.

'It would be interesting to see how ArtScience pans out as this would be something not just entertaining but educational,' says Mr Koh. 'We hope it will boost tourism and add to the cultural dimension of the Marina area. At the NHB, we welcome private museums on this scale as it gives variety and vibrancy to the art and cultural scene.'

'I like the museum because the architect has made a statement with a striking structure that is not only artistically pleasing but also functionally meaningful and environmentally friendly, says Lee Suan Hiang, executive irector, Arts & Cultural Development office of the National Arts Council & NHB. 'By giving the traditional lotus flower a modern treatment, he has given it universal appeal.'

Lawyer and museum-lover Cheong Kah Wai fell for the building when he first saw it. For him, the symbol of the lotus fits what ArtScience sets out to do. 'Even in the mud, a lotus can flower,' says Mr Cheong. 'Science deals with the hard facts of life. Art gives it the human touch. It's the yin and yang that balances each other. I'm curious to see how it will inspire the expression of this harmony.'

Architect Richard Ho takes a more wait-and-see attitude. 'The museum looks exuberant from the outside. It will be interesting to see how the curator weaves the exuberance of the outside inside with the exhibits. The success of such a project depends on the total experience.'

Visiting scientist at A Star, John Common, is excited about the museum. 'There are similarities between both disciplines and it would be wonderful if Singapore can showcase inventions that illustrate the human mind's observational, analytical and interpretational abilities which are what both disciplines are about.'

It's a tall order but both Safdie and Zaller seem up to the challenge. For Safdie, even though he has designed several high-profile projects in Singapore, it's clear that he expects the ArtScience Museum to be his true calling card.

'In terms of geometry, this is the most complex work I have ever done,' says Safdie, pointing to a rainwater collection feature he designed. 'When it rains, that will channel rainwater through the central atrium of the building, creating a 35-m water drop into a reflecting pool,' he explains. 'The rainwater is then recycled for use in the building restrooms.'

Asked if he is satisfied with the lotus, the architect seems surprised. 'I know people are curious about it,' he says with a half smile. 'It is the most complicated building I have embarked on. The upper galleries float on the water, the main galleries in the basement are submerged. But like the lotus, they rise from the water to the sky. The tips of the 'fingers' are a study of the use of light. These 'windows' can be shut completely or allow varying degrees of light in.'

For the casual observer, the lotus is perhaps one of the most intriguing buildings to appear in the city after the Esplanade's 'Durian'. There have been hardly any vocal reactions to the lotus in comparison, and there is a palpable air of expectation as opening day draws near.

After all, art and science are all well and good, but the ultimate question to ask would be this: If they build it, will people come? The answer is probably yes, for a simple reason without which neither art nor science could exist: curiosity.

The layout of MBS I feel is terrible. Maybe after everything is finished it would be clearer and make more sense. Lots of architectural anti-climax regarding the transition spaces.

World's 1st ArtScience Museum to open in S'pore
By Lai Han-Wei | StraitsTimes.com

The world's first ArtScience Museum will open at Marina Bay Sands on the 'auspicious' date of Feb 17, 2011 at 1.18pm.

With an 'iconic' lotus-inspired design, the ArtScience Museum is set to become the heart of the growing ArtScience movement as well as the premier venue for international exhibitions from renowned worldwide collections, Marina Bay Sands said on Wednesday. Featuring 21 gallery spaces totalling 50,000 square feet, the new museum will display a variety of exhibits that span various influences from art and science, media and technology, to design and architecture.

Marina Bay Sands president and chief executive officer Mr. Thomas Arasi, said: 'Singapore is already fast becoming the exchange capital of the world in finance, culture and knowledge. With the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, we will deliver an internationally renowned forum for the exchange of the latest creative ideas and theories. We are proud to present to audiences in Singapore and beyond, Singapore's gift to the world and the city's new great cultural symbol.'

The Museum's showpiece exhibition, ArtScience: A Journey Through Creativity, will feature a series of permanent exhibits that anchor the venue at the forefront of technology, design and culture.

ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands will also play host to marquee exhibitions curated by leading museums and collections from around the world. In the coming months, the museum will launch a speaker series that will bring globally renowned thought-leaders in the field of ArtScience, to Singapore, to drive discussion and generate more ideas on the subject.

Well, I guess, they only turn on the pipes at certain times. I am not sure when they do this but that seems to be the case. From the looks of things, it is likely during the weekend in the evening or night.:)

The pipes were indeed turned on and they were clearly contributing to the water stream as it was not rainy outside.

But the whirlpool and the water flow are very noisy. This why, I believe, the waterfall is not there all the time.

One complaint, though, is the flooring there. The granite flooring tends to become really unsightly when it rains and people walk in and leave dark marks all over; while the wooden flooring on the lower levels is dull and gets scratched really easily. However, the section outside Miu Miu and Bottega Veneta seems glossed over, so maybe they might be polishing and giving the floor a veneer. But carpeting would have been much nicer, albeit costly...

Light and magic

VISITORS will soon be treated to another spectacular multimedia show by the waterfront.

Set against the backdrop of the towering Marina Bay Sands hotel, the Marina Bay Sands' US$15 million (S$19 million) light and water show, Wonder Full, at the Marina Bay Promenade is set to rival Resorts World Sentosa's Crane Dance.

The Crane Dance, which opened last month, is a nightly 10-minute show at the waterfront of Resorts World Sentosa, featuring a pair of mechannical 'dancing' steel cranes.

Sands' Wonder Full, which is a play on the song, It's A Wonderful Life, will feature a brilliant display of laser, light, water and graphics in a 13-minute show that can be seen within a 3.5-km radius of the Marina Bay Promenade. This means people can see the show from locations such as the Esplanade's waterfront and One Fullerton bay.

Two shows will run daily from Sundays to Thursdays, and three free shows will be on each Friday and Saturday. Like the Crane Dance, these shows are free. The opening date has yet to be confirmed.

Wonder Full aims to take its audience on a moving journey through life, with scenes from birth to teenage life to parenthood. The story is told through the use of giant water screens, vibrant multicoloured lasers, high-definition video projections, LED lighting, surround sound and special effects.

There was some construction at the area described. They were installing spotlights and cables around the area. Maybe it is for this new public show. :)

The celebrity restaurants all look really good from the outside, especially Cut. I was having dinner at DB Bistro Moderne around New Year's, and the food there is really good, along with the ambience (looks like a Paris metro station on the inside). Daniel Boulud himself was actually there in the kitchen of the restaurant during New Year's and came to talk to the customers over dinner. Great service too! :)

Classy club at MBS sued over name
By Ewen Boey – January 24th, 2011

The owners of Ku De Ta, a swanky restaurant, bar and club perched atop Marina Bay Sands (MBS), are being sued by a beach club in Bali that goes by the same name, reported The Straits Times.

The partners behind the Bali beach club are seeking a High Court order directing the Singapore outlet to remove the “Ku De Ta” from the MBS venue at the 57th floor, and to stop using the name on its corporate materials, websites and everywhere else.

In its defence, Ku De Ta SG, the company that owns Ku De Ta MBS Restaurant & Club, claims that the trademark name was conceived, designed and managed by one of the partners of the Bali outfit, Mr Arthur Chondros.

In defence documents filed in court last week through lawyer Gilbert Leong from Rodyk & Davidson, the Singapore company claimed that Mr Chondros had set up a firm in Sydney in 2003 called Nine Squares, which licensed the name Ku De Ta to a Chris Au, who in turn licensed it for use at MBS by a third party.

The root of the issue before the courts now is whether one party had the right to license the name and its related trademarks, and whether the other party consented to this.

The Ku De Ta partnership in Bali — comprising of Australians Guy Neale, Aki Kotzamichalis and Arthur Chondros; Indonesian Made Wiranatha; and the White Horse Trading Company — has run the club in Bali since 2000.

Court papers filed last month by its team of lawyers from Allen & Gledhill, led by Mr William Ong, stated that the partnership did not at any time allow the Ku De Ta trademark to be used or licensed by any of its individual partners to anyone else and that the name belongs collectively to the partnership.

The partnership added that through the years, the brand has acquired a significant amount of recognition among its high-end clients in Indonesia and overseas through its use of the name and logo on all its business and corporate materials like chopsticks, serviettes and other paraphernalia, its two advertising and marketing websites, and a boutique selling resort wear among other items.

The partnership is alleging that by 2009, Mr Chornos had acted without the knowledge of the other partners and had his firm Nine Squares register two trademarks here incorporating “Ku De Ta”.

According to ST, Nine Squares licensed Mr Au to use the brand name within Singapore, which he then assigned the licensing rights to Ku De Ta SG, the company set up in August 2009 with the sole shareholder being a firm incorporated in the British Virgin Islands.

The partners from the Bali club found out about this after they ran a search in the Singapore Registry of Trademarks in December 2009.

There was much fanfare when the Ku De Ta venue opened in Singapore, which coincided with the F1 Grand Prix here.

The plaintiffs argued that the continued use of the Ku De Ta name will confuse and mislead customers into believing that there is a connection between the goods, services and business of the Singapore and Bali venues, given that they are both restaurants, clubs and bars.

Ku De Ta SG in turn, counter-argued that Mr Chondros created the name “Ku De Ta” from Kuta, Denpasar and Tabanan — popular locations in Bali — and that the partnership agreed to allow him the use of that name commercially outside of Indonesia as it was his idea.

It also claims that the partnership had agreed that Nine Squares would be the licensing entity for the Ku De Ta trademark, and it would not have rights to it outside of Indonesia.

It added that Mr Chondros and Nine Squares, not the partnership, had been running Ku De Ta in Bali ever since its inception until 2009.

A High Court pre-trial conference is due next month.

Summary of Good Points

* few skaters, so you have the whole area all to yourself
* falling won't hurt since it's hollow plastic (ice can scratch you)
* relatively cheap

Summary of Bad Points

* feels different from real ice, very slippery
* personal skates not allowed
* difficult to brake
* greasy feeling on your hands if you touch the surface

Santi Santamaria fainted at MBS tasting for international media

Marina Bay Sands was hosting a gourmet safari at seven celebrity chef restaurants for the media when he collapsed.

Singapore, February 16, 2011

One of the world's top chefs Santi Santamaria fainted at a marathon food tasting event at Marina Bay Sands for the international media tonight.

The three-star Michelin chef from Barcelona, who was supposed to host journalists at his restaurant at the casino resort, was taken to hospital after he collapsed.

The rotund chef showed no signs of bad health at the press conference held in a theatre there in the late afternoon before the gourmet safari at six celebrity restaurants.

He was chatty and jovial as he replied to questions from the media and when mingling with them and well-wishers for phototaking after the press conference.

His restaurant, Santi, was one of the six restaurants scheduled to be formally unveiled as a group to the media tonight.

The rest were restaurants by Mario Batali (New York), Daniel Boulud (New York), Wolfgang Puck (Los Angeles), Guy Savoy (Paris) and Tetsuya Wakuda (Sydney).

At the press conference, Chef Santi joined the five chefs plus Singapore's Justin Quek in affirming the unique and formidable gastronomic showcase of their cuisines at the integrated resort, the Sands' crown jewel of its casino collection.

Although renowned as an avant-garde chef, Santi has been true to his Spanish roots and was against the more fashionable molecular cuisine expounded by his rival Ferran Adria.

His Singapore restaurant Santi was supposed to serve some of his best Tapas signatures to the journalists who came from all over the world.

Like his chilled Gazpacho, oysters escabeche, pinchos morunos, octopus and Romesco, Iberico Ham with "Pa Amb Tomaquet" and Chocolate Bunyols dessert.

Las Vegas Sands seeking more land to expand MBS
Reuters | StraitsTimes.com

US casino operator Las Vegas Sands is seeking more land to expand its highly profitable Singapore casino, founder and CEO Sheldon Adelson said on Thursday. He told reporters at the official opening of Las Vegas Sands' US$5.5 billion (S$7.15 billion) Marina Bay Sands (MBS), the world's second most expensive after MGM's CityCenter in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Sands said on Feb 3 its Singapore casino had earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of US$306 million in fourth quarter 2010, boosted by above-normal table game winnings. The casino, which opened in April 2010, generated US$241.6 million in Ebita in the third quarter.

Las Vegas Sands chief executive officer Sheldon Adelson said he is lobbying to get more land from the Singapore government to expand its profitable integrated resort in Singapore.

Mr Adelson told reporters at the opening of the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) that the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition (MICE) business has been overwhelming and more land space would be needed.

"Otherwise we may have to ask for six month or a year's booking in advance," he said.

ArtScience Museum ready to open its doors
By Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid | Posted: 17 February 2011 1639 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's latest iconic structure, the lotus-inspired ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, is ready to open its doors.

The structure, made up of "10 fingers", is also touted as the "Welcoming Hand of Singapore" which opens up to the skies.

Its architect Moshe Safdie said: "These shapes which you read from the outside - some say 'lotus', some say 'hand of welcome' - are actually the shapes of the rooms inside. And because of the geometry, every room is unique, every room has a slightly different shape."

The building makes use of natural light that flows into the galleries. Rainwater is channelled from the roof and down through the centre of the four-storey structure.

The museum aims to show that the creative processes between arts and science can be similar.

On the two highest floors stands the permanent ArtScience exhibition which is separated into three galleries - Curiosity, Inspiration and Expression.

Various interactive screens also allow visitors to stay engaged.

Museum director Tom Zaller said the museum is an evolving space.

"The museum is never done, we will never be finished with this space, we will never be finished with the entire place, it's a museum built on a concept...it does not mean the content, the physical boxes or the text that is written on the wall are going to be the same every time. We will continue to change it month after month. New exhibitions will come in, different types of exhibition from fine art to pop culture," he said.

For a start, the museum is showcasing Genghis Khan - one of the most powerful men of 13th century Mongolia. The exhibition features more than 200 rare treasures never seen outside of Mongolia. The exhibition will go on for two months before heading back to the US.

Also on display will be archaeological finds from 9th century Tang dynasty - as part of the "Shipwrecked: Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds" exhibition - as well as exhibits tracing the Silk Road.

The experience extends outside the museum too, with a light and water show that involves the use of water screens and vibrant multicolour high-powered lasers.

The show, which tells a story about life, is put up by LaserVision and involves the use of medium giant water screens, vibrant multicolour high powered lasers, among others.

It is accompanied by an original score by local composer and arranger, Iskandar Ismail.

Laservision's founder and CEO, Paul S McCloskey, said it is a show that is designed to be immersive and to invoke emotions from viewers.

"It's a show with a song. So yes, it's spectacular, but it's also designed to make you want to squeeze the hand of your partner, or if not, someone else's partner," he said.

The free 13-minute show, known as "Wonder Full", will be on nightly.

MARINA BAY SANDS DEVELOPS CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY FOR WONDER FULL

Marina Bay’s first Light and Water Spectacular showcases latest multimedia technology and special effects

Singapore (January 31, 2011) – Marina Bay Sands, Asia’s leading business, leisure and entertainment destination, will soon launch a light and water spectacular that will boost state-of-the art technology built singularly for this multimedia extravaganza.

The integrated resort will be home to a spectacular show, Wonder Full, a feature that involves laser, light, water movements and graphics nightly on the Event Plaza.

The 13-minute performance on the waters of Marina Bay is told using the mediums of giant Water Screens, vibrant multicolor High Powered Lasers, Search Lights, Spot Lights, Fountains, Surround Sound, Strobes, Bubble Factories, LED lighting, High Definition Video projection and Special Effects.

The original idea of doing a show that has a “soul" was seeded by Mr. Michael A. Leven, President and Chief Operating Officer, Las Vegas Sands Corp. The concept was developed and produced by Laservision, a leader in large scale multimedia shows and architectural illuminations

Not only will Wonder Full be a visual treat for the eyes, it features technology that took Laservision three years to develop and refine, with a team consisting of 100 specialist architectural, design, creative, musical, engineering, technical and IT resources drawn from its Hong Kong, Australian and Singaporean offices.

Three massive water screens that will be illuminated by high definition video projection and optically pumped full colour laser systems will face the audience at the Event Plaza, Marina Bay Sands entertainment venue featuring adjustable platforms. The Event Plaza will be flanked by custom-designed media towers which will bathe and envelope the audience in a true 3-dimensional fantasy including surround sound, special effects and dynamic lighting.

“Creating Wonder Full was an exciting and rewarding challenge in many ways. From a technical perspective, the design and installation of multiple types of mediums within a site that was already open to the public created a whole set of challenges that needed to be overcome. From a creative perspective, the vision of Sands to create an attraction that would capture an emotion was a mammoth challenge. The required level of collaboration and consultation between ourselves, the architects, the construction team and Marina Bay Sands was greater than in any other project that we have created across the globe,” said Mr Paul McCloskey, CEO & Founder, Laservision Mega ~ Media.

The cutting-edge technology also combines commendable green initiatives in its design.

For example, Wonder Full uses extreme energy efficient lighting technologies of over 250,000 intelligent Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). These LEDs have a longer lifespan resulting in reduced landfill waste and emissions.

Wonder Full is an environmentally-friendly show that can be showcased daily because the
show relies on a range of cutting edge and sophisticated mediums, instead of an arsenal of pyrotechnics to provide the wow factor. On special occasions that call for extra celebrations such as Chinese New Year, zero fallout pyrotechnic technologies will be used to minimise the environmental impact whilst still maintaining a premium effect.

Mr. Michael Leven said: “Wonder Full is a show that emphasizes greatly on the human touch. While designing this show, Marina Bay Sands was mindful of the importance of preserving the environment while delivering this nightly extravaganza. The result is a ‘green’ show that not only celebrates life but our world at large.”

When launched next month, Wonder Full is set to enthrall local and traveling audiences as they are taken on a journey that explores humanity and the wonders of life. The emotional journey that the audience will take visually is reinforced by the original sound score composed by one of Singapore's most recognised and awarded composers, Iskandar Ismail. His work was recorded under the direction of maestro Darrell Ang.

This visually enticing musical will light up the skies of the Marina Bay area seven days a week when it opens to the public. Viewers will be entertained twice a night from Sundays to Thursdays and three times on Friday and Saturday evenings.

More information on the show timings and date of debut will be announced shortly

Some kind of anti-fungus, humidity-free or moisture resistant paint should take care of that, plus maybe top-quality 'car-wax' plus sealant combination
A couple of millions from the casino earnings should cover that.

Here is some news regarding the IATA meeting in MBS. :)

S'pore to host global air transport meet
By Travis Teo | Posted: 02 March 2011 1154 hrs

SINGAPORE: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will hold its annual meeting this June in Singapore, a shift from the original venue of Cairo, Egypt.

The meeting will be held between June 5 and 7 at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

IATA's chief executive Giovanni Bisignani said they regret not being able to host this event in Egypt and is looking forward to hosting a future meeting in Egypt when its political transition is complete.

IATA said this year's meeting is expected to attract about 800 delegates, including some 150 to 200 CEOs from airlines, manufacturers, airports and other industry partners.

The meeting's agenda will focus on the drive for better environmental performance, the impact of rising fuel prices on a weak industry profitability and efficiency gains through technology.

According to a Dow Jones report, Tony Tyler, the outgoing chief executive of Cathay Pacific Airways, is also expected to be confirmed at the meeting as Mr Bisignani's successor.

Singapore had last played host to the annual meeting in 2004.

The Award-Winning Broadway Musical THE LION KING Opens at Marina Bay Sands

http://www.thaipr.net/dsppic/dsppic.aspx?filesid=1BDFC8E8A42B18B72875FEC4782B2F2A

Disney Theatrical Productions in association with BASE Entertainment and Marina Bay Sands are proud to announce that it’s Showtime at the Sands Theater as THE LION KING celebrates its debut in Southeast Asia. It is now Singapore’s turn to embrace and enjoy the award-winning broadway musical and join the 54 million people worldwide who have been wowed by the show.

Singapore is the latest leading city to host THE LION KING after sell out performances in New York, London, Hamburg, a North American tour, Tokyo and Las Vegas. The musical is of the same Broadway-quality standards, spectacular music, dance, sets and costumes that have made it a worldwide phenomenon, however, it has also added some local elements to make this production unique to Singapore.

Mr. George Tanasijevich, Interim Chief Executive Officer for Marina Bay Sands and Managing Director of Global Development for Las Vegas Sands Corp., said, “Today, we celebrate the months of hard work and unyielding commitment by the dedicated teams at Marina Bay Sands, Disney Theatrical Productions and BASE Entertainment. We want to congratulate every single member of the cast and crew of THE LION KING who have worked tirelessly to bring THE LION KING to Singapore. We know that the impact of this world-class musical will be immediate and that it will elevate the theater industry in the region. We are very proud of our partnership with Disney Theatrical Productions and BASE Entertainment.”

Singapore audiences will be treated to unbelievable performances by a select cast from around the world. The cast of 51 for the Singapore production is comprised of the cream of THE LION KING performers, including veterans of the acclaimed London and Paris productions and hails from 8 countries and 5 continents. As in virtually every company of THE LION KING, this cast includes South African members, in keeping with the show’s spirit of authenticity.

On stage, Director Julie Taymor’s creative vision blends elements of African art and Broadway artisanship to depict anthropomorphic animal characters. The sardonic and deviously cunning “Scar” is played by Patrick Brown. Jean Luc Guizonne aka Jee-L is “Mufasa”, the great warrior and ruler of the Pridelands. Gugwana Dlamini is the wise baboon shaman “Rafiki”. Lyall Ramsden plays the prim and proper horn billed bird “Zazu”. Pierre van Heerden is the carefree warthog “Pumbaa” and Jamie McGregor is the wisecracking meerkat “Timon”. Mufasa’s son, Simba, the lion prince born to be king is played by Jonathan Andrew Hume and Puleng March is the loyal lioness “Nala”.

The three evil hyenas are played by Lavina Williams, Simon Gwala and Michael Bagg. The role of “Young Simba” is alternated between Lance Reblando, Leon Matawaran and Warren David Saga and the role of “Young Nala” is alternated between Christina De Leon, Myka Torre and Nikki Samonte.
THE LION KING began as a 1994 animated feature-length film developed and produced by the Walt Disney Company. The story, a coming of age parable set among animals indigenous to its setting, the African savanna, tells the tale of Simba, the lion cub who rises to be the King of the jungle.
This production of THE LION KING, brought into Singapore by BASE Entertainment, has been developed specifically for the region and the Sands Theater at Marina Bay Sands.

Milan Rokic, Vice President and Managing Director of BASE Entertainment Asia, “Thus far tickets have exceeded our expectations, but there are still great seats available. A musical of this magnitude has never been created specifically for Singapore and together with the artists from around the world; we are thrilled to be part of this production. Enjoy THE LION KING – it’s all yours.”

THE LION KING plays Tuesday to Sunday evenings at 8pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. Tickets are available at the Sands Theater Box Office or SISTIC outlets by calling +65 6348 5555 or via the Internet at www.thelionking.com.sg. Ticket prices for the engagement starts from $65. Platinum packages, which include prime seat locations, a souvenir gift, $10 merchandise voucher and a drink, are also available.

THE LION KING’s presenting sponsor is OCBC Bank, while MediaCorp TV 5 is the Official TV Station, and Showbiz Asia is the official packaging partner; Singapore airlines is official airline, and it’s proudly supported by the Singapore Tourism Board.

THE LION KING will play 8 shows a week – every Tuesday to Friday at 8pm and every Saturday, Sunday at 2pm and 8pm.

Another way to go to the SkyPark without paying $20 is to have lunch at Sky @ 57 (Justin Quek's restaurant)... while the dinner could set you back $100+, the 3 course set lunch is a relatively cheaper $48... you can rest and relax and enjoy yourself at the SkyPark after lunch...

Haha. That reminds me: I'm not sure if it was allowed, or I managed to slip through security but I managed to get access to the SkyPark from the southernmost lobby... and even walked pass the pool and onto the observation deck... all without being questioned. I even remember asking staff at the pool for directions to get to Ku De Ta, once there, I also asked the staff how to get to the "paid" observation deck, and they even whisked me through.

Asia's Hottest Clubs Open at Marina Bay Sands in July

Pangaea and Avalon, a magnet for celebrities in London, Los Angeles, Miami and New York open their most ambitious clubs in Singapore

SINGAPORE, April 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Just months before the celebrities and jetsetters fly into Singapore for Formula 1's only night race, the Singapore Grand Prix, Marina Bay Sands announces the opening of Asia's much-anticipated nightclubs in July. Emerging from Marina Bay and enclosed in the distinctive glass crystal pavilion, Pangaea and Avalon, two of the hottest nightclub brands in the U.S. and Europe, will captivate partygoers in Singapore and from around the world with its innovative concepts, music and premium service.

Pangaea, the ultra-lounge bottle club that swiftly attracted celebrity followers in New York, Miami and London, has hosted A-listers including Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss and Will Smith. Occupying 6,000 square feet, Pangaea is on the first level of the southern Crystal Pavilion. Patrons can access the club through the underwater tunnel connected to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The ultra-lounge will be able to host up to 400 partygoers at one time or over a thousand a night.

Pangaea operator Michael Ault said, "When we first announced our plans to open this club, the structure was not even built. We only had our imagination and a few wild ideas. Today, piercing the waters of Marina Bay, the crystal pavilion is one of the most stunning and perhaps the best venues in Singapore. We said from day one that we will create something the world has never seen and with the formulae of great architecture and our experience in successfully operating the best clubs in leading international cities, we simply cannot wait to open our doors and put Singapore on the global party map."

The second and with a completely distinct concept from Pangaea will be Avalon. Across two levels and over 12,000 square feet, entertainment at Marina Bay Sands will reach a whole new high with Avalon. The club will feature an exciting line-up of leading international DJ's, live concerts and high profile events.

Avalon co-founder and club guru Steven Adelman said, "Avalon has hosted virtually every celebrity - The Black Eyed Peas, Ashton Kutcher, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Pink, to name a few. Parties at our club in L.A have included the annual Grammy after-party hosted by Justin Timberlake. Here in Singapore, we are building the most ambitious and state-of-the-art visual, sound and light system we're aware of anywhere. The combination of Avalon's star power and Marina Bay Sands' iconic structure will set the stage for the biggest party in Asia," said Steven.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Executive Director, Mr. John Postle, said, "We have discovered two of the most leading and sought-after club operators in the world. With the creative genius of both Michael Ault and Steven Adelman, we are creating an entertainment hotspot like no other in Asia. Floating on Marina Bay and set in the stunning crystal pavilion, Marina Bay Sands will be home to every guest looking for the best energy in town."

is it completed 100% ?

Mith252

^^ By the way, the way you post the question is weird. Do you mean to ask "Is the roof completed"? If that is the case, it is complete.
