Lifestlye-1881,

I don't think that there will be a lift today as the wireropes are still not attached to the superstructure.

Those pointy/sharp looking rooftops make hi-class skyline of Singapore resemble Chinese skylines of 1990s

IMO the pointy/curved tops of builings like the MBFC and Sail add some variation and form to the skyline. Most of Singapore's buildings are flat-roofed.

This is still very different from typical Chinese skylines as many of those have spires and needles on top of their buildings. Those look really tacky. If you notice there is no significant Singapore building with a spire and none that appears on the waterfront.

IMHO, this segment/module of the north cantilever is the smallest. The lifting platform also smaller than the bridge 1 and 2's. But how come there are two strand jacks on each platform to lift it?

I agree some of the buildings on Sing skyline are very dated and these add a modern touch will look great when the tops of the MBFC buildings are all lit up!

Looking forward to seeing a huge piece being lifted or will it be done in small little bits?

I'm no engineer so what happens after all the steel structure is in place do they just build around it? How do they do that on the bits which are in between the main buildings particularly the underneath of those parts??!

[QUOTE=OpenH2O;47135777]IMHO, this segment/module of the north cantilever is the smallest. The lifting platform also smaller than the bridge 1 and 2's. But how come there are two strand jacks on each platform to lift it?

The North Cantilever's 1st segment is the 2nd heaviest among the 6 segment because it is closer to the building line. It shape in plan is almost rectangular, with a slight curve at both side, weight abot 170 T, size aboout 6 x 35 m2.
The next segment is the heaviest an largest, 200T, approx.7 x 34 m2
4 lifting points have to be used in order to do some adjustment(vertical/horizontal/rotation) during final connection to the main structure lifted before. We use 4 Strand jacks with 120T capacity each, with 6 strands per jack (SWL 60T, Ultimate 150T per lifting point)
The Bridge 1 and 2 segments average weight 400T each, use 2 strand jacks with 220T capacity each, with 22 strands (SWL220T, Ultimate 550T per lifting point).

Yesterday, start lifting in the afternoon for about 3m, stopped for 5 hrs for installation of the facade's fixtures underneath than start lifting again at 10.30 pm. Lifting speed about 15 ~20 m per hour.
If you have any question, you can contact me at 96999128.

As expected, cannot launch by 15 Feb 2010, Chinese New Year.

Now say late March.....drag, drag, drag.....may as well give a more comfortable timeline rather than delay again - I see May 2010 a more practical one.

Sands plans phased opening for S'pore resort

* 800 to 1,000 hotel rooms seen opening late March

LOS ANGELES - Las Vegas Sands Corp expects to open its US$5.5 billion, 2,700-room Singapore integrated resort in phases starting in the first quarter of next year, a company spokesman said on Thursday.

The first phase of the project will also include the casino, some of the retail operations and some of the meeting and convention space
He declined to give a specific date for the opening - which will include 800 to 1,000 hotel rooms - but a source close to the company said it would be 'toward the end of March'.

The first phase of the project will also include the casino, some of the retail operations and some of the meeting and convention space, said spokesman Ron Reese.

Sands said in July that it was making every effort to open the triple-tower property, called Marina Bay Sands, by Feb 15, 2010.

The company is now in the process of raising segments of the resort's 'sky park' - a 1,200-foot-long (360-metre) span running across the top of the three 55-story hotel towers.

Half of the 14 segments are in place.

About 60 days after the opening of the project's first phase, Sands aims to open the remainder of the hotel rooms, additional retail space and the sky park, Mr Reese said.

By the end of 2010, the company expects the rest of the attractions, including the theatres and museum, to open.

phased opening means that the hotel is able to resolve teething problems without having to handle too many guests. there will be the usual early bird discounts to attract those who are looking for a good deal. and it's much better to ramp up operations gradually than to wait for everything to be completed and go for a big bang opening.

Everybody knows December has always been a wet month in Singapore.

They should had completed before December, and we had said in the forum couple of months back.

I used to take photographs of Sand IR construction progress and posted in this forum over last 2 years and even walked up the Sheares bridge and construction sites to do that a number of times.

Since June this year, I had given up taking photographs of Sand IR as I knew they couldn't make it despite Sand keep promising December 2009, then change to February 2010.

Sand need to understand making poor and loose promise on delivery dates multiple times will end up like the kid story about telling lies of wolf coming, and this is the 2nd time changing date to March 2010.

Are we expecting a 3rd time changing dates again ? Hope not ?

Comparing to Genting Sentosa's IR, this one not just kept it's promise on delivery date, and even delivered earlier than promise !

LOS ANGELES, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS.N) expects to open its $5.5 billon, 2,700-room Singapore casino resort in phases starting in the first quarter of next year, a company spokesman said on Thursday.

He declined to give a specific date for the opening -- which will include 800 to 1,000 hotel rooms -- but a source close to the company said it would be "toward the end of March."

also you cant compare the two as RWS will do fine but it is a theme park and theme parks wear out. RWS is worried about MBS as they wouldn't have said this...reminds me of Stanly Ho in Macao.

23 Nov 09

AHEAD of its soft opening early next year, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) said that it has confirmed 30 event bookings, a number of which are major international meetings that are expected to boost Singapore's standing in the Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) industry.

The most prominent event it has attracted so far is the 11th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (WCEC), happening on Oct 5-7, 2011. Held every two years in a different city, the WCEC is a key platform for ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs to learn from one another's experiences, discover new opportunities and expand networks. It is expected to draw 4,000 of the top business leaders from around the world.

'We are an Asian company operating in Asia,' said RWS chief executive Tan Hee Teck. 'Our roots date back to our late founder and chairman Lim Goh Tong, himself a self-made Chinese entrepreneur. It is an honour for Resorts World Sentosa to host the WCEC.'

As for major events next year, those that it has sealed include a Nu Skin Enterprises South-east Asia Convention and a Best World International anniversary awards convention, which are expected to garner 7,000 delegates and 2,000 delegates respectively.

There is also the Asia Pacific Retailers Convention 2011, which will draw some 1,500 guests.

'As the world's economy recovers, we are getting strong interest from organisers for events from 2010 to as far ahead as 2014 and that gives us great confidence in Singapore's meetings and incentive travel sector in the mid to long term', said RWS director of Mice Elena Arabadjieva.

One of the two integrated resorts that is being built in Singapore, RWS has been garnering plenty of buzz around the impending opening of its Universal Studios theme park. When opened, it will be the only one in South-east Asia. RWS also houses the world's largest Marine Life Park, six hotels, a casino and a palette of Las Vegas-styled entertainment, world-class performances, restaurants by celebrity chefs and retail shops.

RWS has the capacity to host up to 35,000 Mice guests at any one time. Other than event spaces within Universal Studios Singapore, it has 26 function rooms located within the Resorts World Convention Centre. As well, it houses one of Asia's largest column-free ballrooms that seats 7,300 people.

RWS is a complete site by a single developer, more easy to manage.

Whereas for MBS, there are two bridges, underground MRT, Common Service Tunnel, Adjacent construction projects, Garden by the bay...All these are connecting with MBS....If the huge building can be completed within two years, the two bridges should be completed much earlier. If MBS can really open end 2009, what about the MRT? the bridges....

Cannot imaging the completed MBS sit within all uncompleted work sites....

Marina Bay Sands signs 30 deals for events at Expo & Convention Centre
By Jonathan Peeris, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 07 December 2009 1736 hrs

SINGAPORE : Marina Bay Sands on Monday said it has signed over 30 deals for premier events at its new Expo and Convention Centre.

This is expected to attract over 150,000 attendees to the integrated resort when it opens next year.

Marina Bay Sands said it has sealed events from a wide range of industries, from the engineering and legal sector to life sciences and renewable energy.

Some events are marking their return to Singapore after many years.

For example, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association 2010 Conference will see top lawyers from the region converging in Singapore in May for the first time since 1994.

With the theme of 'Climate Change', the prestigious event counts former US Vice President and environment champion Al Gore as its keynote speaker.

Other returning events include the 2010 UFI Congress which will come back to Singapore after a 15-year absence.

New shows that will debut at Marina Bay Sands include the Industrial Fabrics Association International Expo Asia 2011 trade show - the first major textile event catered to the Asian audience.

In addition, the Marina Bay Sands team is working on more than 100 additional prospects for meetings, incentives and conventions over the next four years. - CNA/ms

2nd segment of North cantilever is lifting off now,ar 9.00pm about 2 mtr from the ground.
Then install eacade fixtures takes about 4~5 hrs. so about 2 am will start lifting to the top. Maybe reach the top by noon.
I pray, hopefully tonight the whether is kind to the lifting crew, no rain.

All the best!

The heading should be Lifting of Segment 2 North Cantilever.
Saw the entire skybridges linking the 3 towers. I think it is kind of awesome as it 'float' above the towers. Was unable to capture it as I dont have the correct len also the know the right exposure.

MBS' website (http://www.marinabaysands.com/sitemap.html) is being updated.

There are many new renderings of inside the resort, as well as more details on the gaming, the entertainment, the restaurants... It also displays the new MBS logo which I find rather nice.

Really looking forward the opening!!!

Thanks for the amazing and 'stormy pics' ! Well at least the construction of the skypark is relentless, like much of the project. Actually the main 'delay' could have been at the prefoundation stage, when they had to remove those buried rocks in the ground.

This pic was taken at 7pm. The lifting started at 9am and end at about 630pm to the summit. The lifting took about 10 hours. So it is about 6 storey per hours. Consider the wind and the sudden down pours in the morning, it is smooth and fast to me.

Can someone explain the iconic part of the sands development which is going to look like the palm of a hand or something nearest to the wheel on the floor it is made up of a huge mass of bright red shiny steel so far but half of it looks like it has collapsed in on itself and is not the red shiny steel used for the rest of it :bash::bash:

I saw this morning about 930am that the overnite lifting is not complete yet. It is almost on the same level as the second segment BUT not fitted into the 2 holes yet.

How many segments make up this cantilever? I saw possibly the last white piece on the ground. The cooler seems to be moving out into the open now.

Nice pic.and great effort. Thk.
Segment 3 North Cantilever was an overnight lifting. I got no idea when it ended. 3 more to go.

At 7am

Thank you Xtemujin.

That night wanted to go marina south but really too tired. Only view from the side then can see how much the sky garden is being extended.

The next three pieces are quite smaller. If they can have a further lifting point, they may be able to up them up completely. If they can lift one piece in three days interval, then will be able to complete before christmas.

Sand has no choice as delay in starting business means losing money...I guess their interests on loans payable to creditors everyday is probably close to a million dollar. Plus now they've increasing headcounts to pay every month. Shareholders are definitely having concern on furthur delay.

However, safety come first. No point screw up because of 1 day and delay even more days.

Good luck to all of you.

Heavy rain, strong winds expected in Singapore from Dec 18-20
By Lynda Hong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 17 December 2009 2125 hrs

SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency's Meteorological Services Division said on Thursday that a monsoon surge is expected to intensify from December 18 to 20.

Moderate to heavy intermittent showers are expected, accompanied by moderate to strong winds.

Coupled with high tides of up to 3 metres, this could result in flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas of Singapore such as Lorong Buangkok, Jalan Seaview, Meyer Road and Everitt North Road.

In the event of flash floods from heavy storms, the public can call the PUB at 1800-284-6600 for assistance, to report obstructions in drains or to check the flood situation.

Artworks as part and parcel of the building

18 Dec 09

Collection at Marina Bay Sands is commissioned to integrate with the architecture, some as early as the design stage, reports WOON TAI HO

http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2009-12-18/BT_NEWS_1_CURRENT_THMARINA.jpg

THE common practice is, build the hotel, then hire an art curator who will source the artworks according to the interior design theme or artistic objective. These days, though, artwork can be commissioned or sourced even as the building itself is being designed. Take the Capella Resort in Sentosa, where the curator from New York took his cue from the designs of architect Norman Foster as he worked on a very contemporary extension to the existing colonial structure.

At the Marina Bay Sands, at least five internationally renowned installation artists were commissioned, some as early as at the design stage. 'The collection is unique because it was commissioned to integrate with the architecture and the pieces were each designed for the specific space,' says a spokesman for the integrated resort.

None of the work is completed yet, but what you are able to see - while navigating the massive construction site - hints at the sheer scale of the works. Already, you can see one sculpture taking shape - it is the work of award-winning sculptor Antony Gormley, who has been tasked to create a sculpture in the biggest lobby in the first tower.

Other artists include Ned Kahn, an environmental artist and sculptor whose works involve capturing the invisible aspects of nature and making them visible. He is most famous for building fabric-like facades that move as the wind blows. His recent works include Microturbines in Santa Rosa Junior College Gallery, CA, where an array of 1008 small extruded acrylic turbines spin in the wind.

For the Marina Bay project, Kahn is building two massive installations - one called the Wind Arbor is made up of stainless steel pieces not unlike a hanging panel of metallic fabric that moves with the wind. The shine of each piece captures light, and depending on the breeze and where you sit, the installation is poised to be a shimmering stunner.

The other installation is titled Vortex. Here, Kahn uses wind-water turbulence within a controlled setting. Not unlike the Tornado he created in 1990, the work would contain a dancing airborne funnel of whirling fog. Air blowers inside the work's upper and lower platforms create a strong updraft, while a fog generator introduces water vapour into the resulting vertical airflow. With no glass or other barrier between viewers and the vortex, the installation invites interaction with the resulting 'mini-twister'.

There is also James Carpenter who focuses on glass structural designs. He is renowned for his cable-net entry wall which is bomb-resistant and energy absorbing. His most visible work is the dual glass walls on the roof for the 150-foot tall and 85-foot wide atrium of the Time Warner Centre, and above that, the Jazz at Lincoln Centre performance space in Manhattan.

For Marina Bay Sands, the yet to be installed work is called Façade as Art. His glass façade is an exploration of the natural phenomena of light in transmission, reflection and refraction influencing the resort's architecture relationship with light.

Sands says this is its largest art project to-date, bigger in scale than its other properties in Macau or Las Vegas. Sands is said to have spent up to $50 million on the commissions.

The idea behind Sands' choice of these particular artists is to create a resort where the design of the building and the art do not just complement each other, but fuse organically as one. Says Mr Gormley: 'Architecture in itself is art, but when the art in it projects the architect's vision and helps give the building its soul, that's ideal.'

Thomas Arasi, president and CEO of Marina Bay Sands adds: 'The art at Marina Bay Sands fits seamlessly with the architecture. It's unique to have art designed to match a building of this magnitude and it's hard to appreciate just how grand these art pieces are until you stand next to them.

'The artists have really designed something magnificent which adds to the unique, once in a lifetime experience of Marina Bay Sands. We say we will have something for everyone and the art is another example of all that Marina Bay Sands has to offer.'

'What the hell is that?'

Antony Gormley expects that sort of reaction to his controversial, larger-than-life works. He talks to WOON TAI HO about his installation for Marina Bay Sands, which will be the largest sculpture in Singapore

http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2009-12-18/BT_NEWS_1_CURRENT_THGORMLEY.jpg

ANTONY Gormley is fascinated with the human body, particularly his own, which is what he models most of his works on. Currently, he has an exhibition in Beijing's 798 district titled Another Singularity where a matrix of a human body five times larger than life is fashioned from 682 bungee cords, forming a kind of cobweb stretching from the floor to the ceiling of an old three-storey warehouse.

While Singularity captured attention, it was a divided reaction that followed his recent work One and Other, which was part of the 100-day celebration of British democracy. For this project, he invited literally anyone - from the ordinary to the eccentric - to stand at Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth and pose as a live sculpture. The 'installation' had critics calling it everything from 're-definition of sculptural art' to 'complete rubbish'.

But the London-born installation artist brushes aside controversy and attention, saying that he would rather focus on the artistic concept behind his works.

Body case sculptures

The 59-year-old came to prominence in the early 1980s with his body case sculptures. For close to two decades, he worked around the world on he calls the Field project. Using local material from different regions, he got residents to make little figures of themselves and create a kind of surrogate population. For example, Asian Field - his installation for the 2006 Biennale of Sydney - comprised 500 clay figures made out of 125 tonnes of clay in Xianxian village, Guangzhou in 2003.

Gormley's commission for the Marina Bay Sands, though, will be of a totally different scale. Destined for the lobby of the main building, it will be the largest sculpture in Singapore, possibly the region. Standing eight storeys high or 24m, it will have a width of 13m and span a length of 40m.

Gormley calls it the Drift - basically a huge cloud made of stainless steel pieces originally measuring 12m by 3.3m (the biggest that could fit onto a local lorry). These were later made into various stripes that suspend the bubble balls.

While his other works around the world are spread out over a huge land surface (like Asian Field in Sydney) or occupying many floors (as in 798 Beijing), this is a single piece occupying a single space. Gormley was inspired to create it because of the sheer size of the Marina Bay Sands.

'The atrium is 300m - huge,' he says. 'It is challenging to fill up such a space. What I want Drift to do is to allow people to feel the space and be energised by it without feeling dwarfed. It needs to go with the enormity of the architecture, yet allow people to feel comfortable, hence the cloud.'

But where's the body, you might ask. Drift is still very much designed from the human form, or to be more specific, Gormley's human form. It is a floating cloud made up of 2,200 'balls', digitally modelled after Gormley's body.

But at this stage of his work, the form has become more abstract. In the last few years, Gormley's works have become more and more about the dematerialisation of the form rather than the form itself.

In his earlier works, where he used materials such as lead, he focused more on the skin, or the surface where substance gives way to appearance. With Drift, Gormley describes the form more like 'sound or smell, it's a long and tall cloud, it is hardly there', adding: 'It is based on the random bubble geometry fugitive - here one minute gone the next.' In the middle of this cloud, there is indeed a body form, but you would need to find it, as it is not immediately apparent.

Gormley has spent time in India and has been influenced by Buddhism. He explains that Buddhism underscores the most fundamental truth, which is we don't really possess anything at all - everything including our body, is temporary. Such is the thought behind One and Other, where people could be who they were - 'or were not', he adds - as an art work.

Unprecedented in scale

To make the Drift sculpture, Gormley enlisted Automated Machinery Equipment International (AME), an engineering company that specialises in marine and steel engineering. 'We started about five months ago,' says Steven Goh, AME's managing director. 'Seventy guys from our company worked on his sculpture, day and night.'

As the work was unprecedented in scale, AME first worked on the design in their factory in Tuas. 'We were chosen because his design needed very complex engineering expertise,' explains Goh, adding that the sculpture is something he never dreamt that he would be working on. By mid October, the sculpture was moved to Marina Bay. 'We feel honoured, a local company working on something so unusual, something so huge, and from such a world renowned artist,' adds Goh.

But what of the reaction of the public when it is finally unveiled?

Gormley is not too concerned.

'When you walk into the lobby, you are very likely to say: 'What the hell is that?' he says. 'My aim is for you to go explore it and find out for yourself.'

When will Marina Bay Sands, your $5.5 billion casino and convention complex in Singapore, open ?

The end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second quarter of next year. We have different benchmarks, but we should open in March or April. Right now we are trying to complete our sky park. There are three towers of hotel rooms, and we are creating a connecting flat park on top of them. This building is going to be one of the most photographed places on the planet. And it's going to make money. There will be 2,500 rooms, a multi-level casino and a huge convention center. Singapore is the shopping center of Asia, and Marina Bay will the key mall in Singapore. There will be three levels of retail. It's going to be amazing. As soon as we open there, we will complete our projects in Macau.

Marina Bay Sands IR may open in April or June next year: sources
Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 18 December 2009 2327 hrs

SINGAPORE : The heat is on for the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort to open with a bang next year.

But with delays and escalating construction costs earlier this year, people have been left guessing when the doors will open.

Sources have told MediaCorp the earliest the resort will start operations is in April. But some industry observers said June is a more realistic date.

They said the resort is determined to open at least the casino and about a third of the rooms first - because these are considered the "high-revenue areas".

The 2,600-room resort was slated to open at the end of this year. But in July, it announced a delay to the first quarter of 2010, citing shortage of raw materials and manpower.

Some new staff have also been given letters to start work at a later date.

This kind of news on employee treatment is not good on the reputation of Sand IR.

Sand IR will also lost the first move advantage to Genting Sentosa IR.

If I understand correctly, the $2000 fee per year for unlimited entry for local can only be bought for one of the IR, and not both. Genting Sentosa IR opening 3-4 months earlier than Sand IR means the latter will probably end up with only the small leftover of such frequent gamblers.

THEY were hired in July to work at the Marina Bay Sands casino. But the year is ending and some recruits have yet to be trained for their jobs as dealers and croupiers.

A few are jobless as well - they quit their previous jobs expecting the casino training to start in October. They say they were told by Sands to leave their jobs and be ready to be called up for training.

The training was to last three months, during which they would be paid. The basic pay for a trainee dealer is $1,500 a month; the pay is $1,800 for those working full-time.

Thanks Lifestyle-1881, Great Pictures.

How come there is only 1 guy working on the roofing work, i thought they should puti in more manpower to the project which is already delayed by 6 months.:ohno:

Look at the guy, he is so down. Poor guy he has to finish all those laying by himself, it may take months to do it.

I like the photos of ongoing activities on the roof and the view of cables attached to the 4th segment.

Two more to go! Hooray! Despite the news on training schedules for MBS staff and delays in opening, contractors are putting in extra efforts to finish the whole project...

Where is the counterweight of the lifting frames? It just moves on rails on the roof or secured by bolts to the roof structure?

It was taken during lunch time as lots of workers are in the canteen :)
He probably checking for things rather than dejected look.

The last 2 segments are smaller.

Does it means lifting and installation will be easier and faster ?

So what's next after those last 2 segments are completed ?

And when will the tower crane be dismantled?

Is the tower crane now anchored at the roof or still from the ground? If from the ground then it will need more time to dismantle and then patch back the holes which it penetrated through every floor......and then interior deco will take place.....then can open...needs months again?

Thanks lifeatyle-1881, lovely pictures which I enjoy looking at very much.

By the look of it, it may take quite some times to complete. Don't think they can open the two building in April.
