View Full Version : BIRMINGHAM | Snow Hill | 138m | 43 fl | On hold
Erebus555 November 25th, 2006, 04:04 PM This in fact two towers for a site adjacent to Snow Hill Station. The taller tower will house the 300 apartments and the shorter tower will house the hotel. The hotel operator has not been announced but is believed to be a 5* - the first 5* for Birmingham.
The tower will not be the tallest in Birmingham but will be the second tallest when completed excluding all other proposals for Birmingham.
The towers are part of a larger redevelopment scheme at Snow Hill which will see high quality offices and will effectively regenerate the entire area.
The towers are connected by a bridge which will house restuarants and cafes. A set of stairs will be located underneath the bridge which will allow visitors to walk from street level to the public open space behind the towers or the new tram station which will be there. The gradient of the site is steep but the development will be flat so the building's entrance will be above street level.
Construction will begin once the roads have been reconfigured.

ZZ-II November 25th, 2006, 04:48 PM nice project, looking good.
Erebus555 November 25th, 2006, 04:52 PM I forgot to mention that the reason why the height is estimated is because the top floor will have plants in and it is still being discussed how high the ceiling needs to be.
wjfox November 25th, 2006, 05:24 PM http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d101/Erebus555/image1.jpg
I don't like the shorter tower. It seems to reduce the 'soar factor' of its taller companion.
Mplsuptown November 25th, 2006, 07:45 PM Very nice.
Myster E November 25th, 2006, 10:05 PM The shorter tower compliments the bigger tower by making it look dominant but the taller tower looks like it's looking out for it's smaller brother, it's kinda like a Danny Devito/Arnorld Scharznegger combo. Nice project for Birmingham UK, not Alabama USA to those who thought this was.
nothingman November 25th, 2006, 10:17 PM Great additions to a great city!!
TallBox November 26th, 2006, 12:25 AM They look great! The cladding reminds me of the Fanying tower going up in Chongqing, and the base looks like that of the Freedom Tower.
Brendan November 26th, 2006, 12:43 PM I actually like them. Is that steel on the facade? If so I am guessing it will probably have a beautiful orange tint at sunset.
jef November 26th, 2006, 01:16 PM great additions.
lpioe November 26th, 2006, 04:39 PM Rather simple design, but I like it.
The smaller tower looks indeed a bit to tall in the pic wjfox2002 posted, but I thinks it's mainly because of the perspective. In the other pics the height seems just right.
weird November 26th, 2006, 05:32 PM Cool towers, I like the forms.. but they aren't a bit alone??
Erebus555 November 26th, 2006, 08:36 PM Cool towers, I like the forms.. but they aren't a bit alone??
Nope, on the skyline they will fit in perfectly. There are plans for other towers of a similar height or taller in Birmingham. There is space over the road which is probably going to see another tower and there are proposals on the other side of the road for something to compliment the shorter tower. It will become a canyon of some form there.
Erebus555 November 26th, 2006, 08:38 PM I actually like them. Is that steel on the facade? If so I am guessing it will probably have a beautiful orange tint at sunset.
Not sure what exact type of metal it is but will certainly be metal. The original design we first saw looked like concrete and was darker.
The initial designs had what looked like plastic cladding in black and white - not very nice
Brendan November 27th, 2006, 08:44 AM I hope it is steel. I mean who knows, it could have a beautiful sunset appearance like this:

If only Birmingham got sunsets like that... I wish :|
harisadoo January 25th, 2007, 05:15 PM this post seems nice .
Erebus555 January 25th, 2007, 09:37 PM It seems construction may start even earlier now. It is possible construction could begin in Spring 2007 and not July/ August which is great!
Metroland January 26th, 2007, 05:34 AM Great looking tower, very sleek. Needs more cowbell! :)
Caiman January 26th, 2007, 10:07 AM Can't wait to see this start rising, one of the best proposals around in teh UK atm.
SimLim January 26th, 2007, 05:12 PM Cool towers, I like the forms.. but they aren't a bit alone??
Good question. For now yes. But the 152m BT Tower stands not to distance and a 70m office tower just to the side. As Erebus has also said, some major plans are in the pipeline for the surrounding area.
SimLim February 2nd, 2007, 07:45 PM Gone in for full planning this week.
43 and 23 storeys, 5 basement - top 2 plant floors will be illuminated to highlight St Chads Cathedral and Square.

Once approved construction should start immediately. Decision date end of February.
Caiman February 2nd, 2007, 07:55 PM Very exciting, can't wait to see these start rising.
Erebus555 February 3rd, 2007, 03:46 PM New render (thanks to bileduct for finding this).

Myster E February 4th, 2007, 03:04 AM thanks erebus for showing us that, I needed to see this development from another angle, and damn, that looks so much better that the tat in the first few pics. Don't even bother driving round the rounabout, it's a bloomin nightmare so i've kinda missed what's going on. What are the buildings to the immediate left, is that lloyd house I see being redeveloped
james2390 February 4th, 2007, 08:46 AM These are awesome! I pretty jealous.

rugbytommy July 25th, 2007, 12:39 PM Looks fab so far...
wjfox July 25th, 2007, 01:07 PM Please check for existing threads before creating new ones. Thanks.
Flogging Molly July 25th, 2007, 01:12 PM Didnt expect to find one considering they have only just started construction. Erebus cheated a bit didnt he - its for highrises over 100m - the one which was U/C at the time of thread opening was that of a building only 57m tall. ;) - the towers only got planning last month
Funny thing is I even posted in it.
Well a clear-up - the towers have actually begun construction.
Flogging Molly July 25th, 2007, 01:13 PM First post needs to be edited then aswell Erebus if you're floating about
Nout July 25th, 2007, 06:46 PM Nice design! Good for Birmingham.
Stefan88 July 25th, 2007, 06:58 PM These towers have grown on me alot. At first when I saw the renders I didn't like them at all.
Now though I love them and I'll look forward to watching them rise.
redob August 10th, 2007, 09:30 PM Nice tower
1878EFC August 12th, 2007, 03:10 PM looking smart brummies
Its AlL gUUd August 13th, 2007, 02:59 AM simple yet elegant, its a beaut
Sentient Seas August 13th, 2007, 10:16 AM Good project for Birmingham, although I'd have to say, not many buildings see the top of my list like the Rotunda building in Birmingham. I don't care if it's only 25 or so floors, it's awesome.
This will be a good tower though.
im_from_zw038 August 16th, 2007, 02:04 PM the area around these two buildings look very chaotic and ugly i think. I'd prefer to see only the tall one rise, the small one takes the tall one a bit down.
Erebus555 October 31st, 2007, 10:01 PM A tower crane has gone up on site. Another two are set to be assembled as well. :pepper:
Sentient Seas November 1st, 2007, 01:44 AM I think it will look great with the Birmingham skyline.
Erebus555 December 8th, 2007, 11:27 PM They are still digging but not for too long. We reckon that they'll start actually building something in about a month! :)

What, like this one?:)http://farm1.static.flickr.com/151/362983605_847f820a95.jpg?v=0
Newcastle Guy June 22nd, 2008, 04:35 PM The core has risen above the hoardings now. I really like this one, it puts Hollaway circus to shame. IMO.
From Grafik:

Erebus555 August 18th, 2008, 01:10 AM So the hotel core has now cleared street level and Ballymore have said that they will now prioritise construction on Phase 4 (an office building next to this tower) and on the hotel in this phase. Construction of the residential tower will therefore be slowed down - possibly due to the economic conditions but it will not be put on hold. This is normal practice.
Here is how construction is looking at the mo. :)

Erebus555 September 8th, 2008, 09:48 PM Errrrrm, it turns out now that the residential part of this phase is now on hold. We have no idea how long for but the developers have said that they are to focus on Phase 4 (an adjacent office building) and the hotel section. This is because they have tenants and a hotel operator lined up for these buildings and they are therefore the priorities. The residential tower hasn't been marketed yet. The concrete pump has been removed from the top of the core. The basement levels and framework is still under construction, though. So the site isn't completely dead!
skytrax September 8th, 2008, 11:14 PM love it!!
twilight_2008 September 9th, 2008, 08:10 PM It isn't on hold. I spoke to someone on site today.
Erebus555 February 8th, 2009, 01:12 AM How about an update? This project is on hold. They have reviewed the schedule for the scheme and have placed all focus on the 75 metre office element which is now surging ahead with construction. It is widely believed that this will recommence construction late this year.
Nout February 8th, 2009, 11:50 AM From some angles these tower(s) will get a kind of flat iron effect. Very nice.
Erebus555 June 1st, 2009, 12:50 AM There is some positive news coming out about this. We discovered that the bank that loaned the money for this (and the rest of Snowhill) was Anglo-Irish which has recently been nationalised and recorded it's biggest loss in Irish history of 4 billion euros.
Luckily, not too long ago, Barclays bank signed up to some office space in 2 Snowhill, a 75 metre office building that is also on hold here. All concrete work on 2 Snowhill has been completed but no steelwork has arrived. It has been revealed that Barclays are now in talks to refinance the loans that Anglo-Irish Bank made for the scheme. They're main priority is refinancing the loan for 2 Snowhill so that can get their office space as soon as possible. This sounds like it will most likely happen. Additionally, they are also in talks to refinance the loan to 3 Snowhill, and this could mean that construction work can recommence quite soon. This is something that is definitely worth watching. :)
cloud32 December 1st, 2011, 09:36 PM Any News? These towers have a great design, it would be a shame to loose them!
