MANILA, Philippines—The bronze statue of Russian national poet Alexander Pushkin was unveiled Friday at the Mehan Garden in Manila to celebrate the friendship between the Philippines and Russia.

The statue was donated by sculptor Grigory Potosky, who was present during the occasion. Pototsky is a member of the International Union of Artists at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and has participated in more than 100 exhibitions since 1985. His works are found in many countries aside from Russia.

Present during the event were Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, RussianAmbassadorVitaly Vorobiev, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Adminstration Franklin Ebdalin, and Senate Secretary Emma Lirio-Reyes.

In his opening remarks, Lim compared Pushkin with Filipino national poet Francisco Balagtas, both of whom were revolutionaries who influenced the course of their country’s literature by being the first to use the vernacular in their work.

For his part, Vorobiev said that Pushkin defined the Russian language, and that the unveiling of his statue is a symbol of the friendship between the Filipino and Russian people.

Ebdalin underscored the unveiling as the first step leading towards the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Russia on June 2, 2011.

After the ceremony, Lim presented Pototsky with the Key to the City of Manila.

Pototsky expressed gratitude to the City of Manila stressing that the symbolic key presented to him will open the hearts of the Russians to the Filipino.

The project is a joint undertaking by the Philippine embassy in Moscow, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Senate of the Philippines, and the City Government of Manila.

Plaza Libertad (formerly Plaza Alfonso XII). The site of the last Spanish surrender in the Philippines on December 25th, 1898. After they have been ousted in Manila on August of that year, the Spanish colonial administration moved their power in Iloilo in a desperate attempt to maintain sovereignty with still loyal Visayans. In October-November 1898, fighting broke up in Panay which led to its surrender on December. A few weeks later, USS Petrel of the US Navy appeared in Iloilo Strait, marking a new era of colonial rule.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) formally presented last Friday a certificate declaring the 30,000-hectare Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park in Mindanao as ASEAN’s 28th and newest ASEAN Heritage Park.

The certificate was presented by ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General Karmain to Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio during the ASEAN launch of International Year of Biodiversity held at the Dusit Hotel in Makati City.

ASEAN is formed by 10 countries – Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The park now joins 27 other ASEAN Heritage Parks.

Mt. Kitanglad is the third declared ASEAN Heritage Park in the Philippines, after Mt. Apo in Davao and Mt. Iglit-Baco in Mindoro Oriental.

Under the ASEAN Heritage Parks program, protected areas with unique, diverse, and outstanding value are given the highest recognition as an ASEAN Heritage Park. The program aims to promote conservation of the region’s natural heritage.

Mt. Kitanglad covers seven municipalities and one city in Bukidnon, namely: Talakag (4,945 hectares), Baungon (3,157 ha), Libona (6,196 ha), Manolo Fortich (595 ha), Sumilao (3,532 ha), Lantapan (7,912 ha), Impasug-ong (1,985 ha), and Malaybalay City (2,317 ha).

Covering an area of about 30,642.0 hectares, Mt. Kitanglad was declared a protected area in 2000 by virtue of Republic Act No. 8978.

The three-day event gathered the 10 ASEAN senior officials on the Environment, who are members of the ACB Governing Board. They held its 11th meeting for the approval of the Philippine-based ASEAN Center for Biodiversity 2010 work plan and discuss ACB’s long-term business plan to ensure the sustainability of ASEAN’s regional efforts at conserving the region’s rich, but highly threatened biodiversity.

they have completed reclaiming a shallow portion of the riverbank already....the project is now filling up the whole site to elevate it from the flood point level....excavatin works also are now done for the drainage system..

Yes it is... You Only have to pay the entrance fee of 100 pesos (not bad) and enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful scenery.. party area and worship area are all available on this site.... you can bring picnic mats and others... and no liquor or any other alcoholic drinks are allowed.

That's the old Plaza and Recoletos Churc of Cebu. The church was demolished to give way to a universtiy and the plaza now a market.

Zambo Unveils Plaza Del Pilar

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Albert Lim has cited City Mayor Celso Lobregat for prioritizing tourism promotion programs, as he stressed that Zamboanga has many tourism potentials that can make the city at par with other cities in the country.

Lim made the statement during the inauguration of Plaza del Pilar, the city’s newest landmark where he was the keynote speaker and guest of honor.

Lim said the Lobregat’s efforts to put investments in the development of parks will boost the tourism campaign of the city. Plaza del Pilar is the first all-in-one “pasalubong center” in the city and has 56 stalls catering to all types of good, candles, devotional items, and souvenir items that are truly Zamboangueño.

“The strength of the city is its rich and colorful history and culture,” the DoT secretary said, adding that the architectural design of the plaza and the other adjacent landmarks – Fort Pilar Shrine, Paseo del Mar and the National Museum – harmonizes each other.

He also promised to help this city in its plan to take over the tourism aspect of the Sta. Cruz Island as well as its plan to rehabilitate the National Museum. (Nonoy Lacson)
