Baguio, the city of pines, flowers, and berries, is a mountain retreat unlike any other place in the Philippines. Many are lured by its attractions, especially its weather. Burnham Park and Camp John Hay are just some of the many tourist spots that draw a lot of visitors, particularly during the summer, which is why it has been considered the summer capital of the Philippines more than any of our world-famous beaches. Many outsiders fall in love with Baguio and a huge number has decided to settle there.
At night, Baguio is a different story. Behind the lights of the city exists stories of old; stories that add to the chill for which Baguio after dark has been known. These accounts reveal the creepy side of the cold city
If these walls could talk
On Leonard Wood Road, just beside the Teacher’s Camp, stands the ancestral house of one of Baguio’s old families: The Laperals. With its structural design—a fusion between Spanish and American architecture— it is believed that the three-story house was built in the 1920s. This house, which is now owned by Lucio Tan, is a story waiting to unfold.
During the Japanese occupation, the house served as one of the quarters of Japanese soldiers. Legend has it that the entire family, who lived there at the height of World War II, died in the hands of the imperialists. Other accounts, however, claim that only the elders were killed and the children were spared and they grew up to fill the house with tragic memories and bitterness. Still, some residents say the last of the Laperals died of old age. The old man of the house, Roberto Laperal, had an accident. While walking around the property, he slipped and fractured his head and so he died. From then on, the house was vacated, left to the care of hired help. To this day, people say the old man’s footsteps are occasionally heard around the house, accompanied by the sound of his cane hitting the old wooden floors. The caretakers share that in the still of the night, these haunting sounds would prove unnerving, especially when dogs howled as though aware of an unexplained presence in the house.
Nobody lives in the Laperal house anymore. The caretakers built a small house within the property. It is off limits to strangers, although adventure travelers often stop by to take photographs just outside the rusty gates.
This old house, according to locals, is also a refuge for restless souls.
Some residents in the area claim that on the wooden stairway leading to the house a little girl dressed in white has once too often been seen. They believe this girl is just one of the restless souls that call the Laperal House their home. Often she is seen sitting on the steps, almost real, but always with an aura that is surreal. There are accounts that she follows those who have seen her, staying with them like an elusive shadow for days.

^The interiors are actually very beautiful and well-preserved (like a corpse? nyay!). But it's really eerie even in these pictures.

Siguro ni minsan hindi pumasok si Lucio Tan dyan. hahaha
Sana bilhin na din ni Lucio Tan yung dating kinatatayuan ng HYATT TERRACES, CASA VALEJO at iba pang haunted places sa baguio diba.

Authentic Japanese garden to rise in Bacolod soon (http://www.periodicos.com.ar/FILIPINAS/davaodelsur.davaocity.sunstardavao.php)
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/cosmosnegros/4rcc_Japanese_Garden_model.jpg
KOICHI Yamaguchi and Toshiyuki Okubo of the Yamaguchi Landscaping Company of Japan, accompanied by Shigini and Thelma Watanabe of OISCA International of Bago City, paid a courtesy call on Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia Friday.
Yamaguchi and Okubo are in the city primarily for the creation of an authentic Japanese garden beside the Japanese shrine at Rosario Heights, Bacolod City.
What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers
The garden will actually be a public park and will be a "tie-up" venture of the Homeowners' Association of Rosario Heights Subdivision, the OISCA and the City Government of Bacolod.
The project was started November 6 and is estimated to be finished in one month's time, said Thelma Watanabe. The Barangay Council of Taculing will maintain it. Turnover ceremonies will be on December 1, she said.
Yamaguchi was in Bacolod 14 years ago and was responsible for the small Japanese garden in the city public plaza -- represented by a big rock facing the Bays Center. Three Japanese nationals were made honorary citizens of Bacolod for that garden - Koichi Yamaguchi, Engr. Katsutoshi Fukukawa and a Mr. Honda.
During the courtesy call, Yamaguchi proposed to landscape a portion of the New Government Center grounds for free. Leonardia thanked him for the generous offer and said his proposal will be seriously studied and evaluated.

OfficeSpaceMakati December 10th, 2008, 10:17 AM This Philippines' Haunted places list is from wikipedia.
* Baguio City - The Diplomat Hotel was rumored to be haunted by elementals and evil spirits.[69] It was a Seminary during the early 1900s. During the Second World War, several priests and nuns were killed and beheaded by Japanese occupying forces. This was converted into a hotel after the war. In itself it was pretty eerie, big rooms with king-sized beds with bibles at the side tables. The rooms are dimly lit. Clerks, bell hops, and hotel guest, complain of wailing sounds even during day time. During nighttime, apparitions of headless priest roam the corridors. Some even say that they see ghost carrying their heads on a platter. Hauntings are not limited inside the hotel for when you stroll outside the compound you would see neighboring houses with crosses painted on their doors and windows, and are kept shut when darkness falls. [70]
* Baguio City - Philippine Military Academy Several ghosts haunt this place. Sometimes late at night a platoon can be heard marching in the parade grounds. A ghost of a cadet dressed in parade uniform and left in one of the lockers still appears. A ghost of a priest who was beheaded during the Japanese occupation period appears here as well as the ghost of a white lady. [71][72]
* Balete Drive - Balete Drive is a residential area in Cubao, Quezon City famous for the apparition of a white lady. It is told that there was a teenage girl who was raped by a cab driver in the 50s in that area. It is possible that the lady of Balete is seeking revenge. [73]
* Manila Film Center - When the construction of Film Center at the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex was rushed in the early 1980s for a film festival, the ceiling scaffolding collapsed killing several workmen who fell to the orchestra below. Rather than halt construction to rescue survivors and retrieve the bodies of dead workmen, Imelda Marcos, the First Lady and the main financier of the project, ordered cement poured into the orchestra, entombing the fallen workmen. Some of them were buried alive in the orchestra. Various ghostly activities were reported on the site including mysterious sounds, voices and poltergeist activity. In the late 1990s a group called the Spirit Questors began to make visits to the film center in an attempt to contact and appease the souls of the workmen who were killed in the building. Some of these spirits claimed to have moved on but a few allegedly remain.[74]
* Ozone Disco - Once there was a disco in Quezon City and it caught on fire.[75] People tried to get out but people were pushing and panicking so no one got out. Some people near the location hear ghostly disco music in their houses at night and see faint people dancing.[76]
* Clark Air Base - Located in Pampanga, about 45 minutes north of Metro Manila, Clark Air Base used to be the biggest U.S. Air Force Base outside of the USA. When the Philippine Senate repealed the Bases Treaty, the US forces withdrew from both Clark and Subic bases but not the ghostly entities that still "infest" Clark to this day.*
* Home Plate canteen - allegedly one of the oldest buildings in Clark and located near the Base Parade Grounds. Early morning joggers say that you can hear a party or merry makings inside the building though clearly nobody is inside and all lights are off. It was said that there was a Christmas party going on in the same building and all the revelers died when the Japanese Imperial Forces conducted an air raid on Christmas Day of 1941 as a prelude for its invasion of the Philippines.[View the whole list... MANILA, Philippines - At the turn of the 20th century, Sta. Ana in Manila was what Tagaytay is today. The country’s well-heeled families, who lived in Binondo and other parts of Manila, built their vacation homes along the river. They would spend the holidays to enjoy the cool breeze and the bucolic scene of the waterway under the azure skies.
Built in 1898, this 15-bedroom mansion, which stood on a 6,000-square meter lot on Lamayan Street, was one of the most popular “haunts.”
The two-story house had vaulted ceilings, cross ventilation and two sweeping spiral staircases. Each tile was marked “1899, Belgium” and the walls, massive doors and bedroom floors were built with solid narra. The stained-glass windows bore Art Deco designs. Decorative grills lent security and privacy. On the second floor was an open-air, 900-square meter dining room enclosed by wrought iron grills.
When Joseph Arcache acquired the house in later years, he had the letter “A” patterned on the grillwork. He had built his wealth in real estate. With his vision and keen business acumen, he was trusted by the country’s high and mighty.
He had advised his buddy J. Amado Araneta to acquire a huge grassland property, which would later be called Cubao. Arcache also served as political adviser to Philippine presidents, from Quezon to Macapagal. When then Sen. Ferdinand Marcos first thought of running for president, Arcache would frequent the Marcos residence.
Arcache’s power and influence allowed the family to live in high style. The household staff consisted of five chauffeurs, among them an American, Alvin Arquette, who would marry the personal hairdresser of Arcache’s beauteous wife, Mary.
New life
It was 1946, and as the country rebuilt itself from the destruction wrought by war, the Arcaches were starting a new life in Sta. Ana, Manila. For many years, the family had lived in Donada, Pasay, a pre-war enclave of the rich. For a change of scenery, Arcache bought this mansion along the scenic Pasig river from a wealthy Chinese businessman named Dy Buncio.
The Arcache family was in good company; next door lived the American ambassador, and the rest were mestizos. The family was oblivious to the street’s name, “Lamayan,” meaning “wake,” and the omen it denoted.
As the furniture was being transported to the home, Arquette stayed in one of the rooms on the ground floor for security. One night, he heard heavy footsteps in the master bedroom above his room.
He thought big rats made the noise. He’d hear the sounds every night; eventually he made them out to be footsteps of one clad in boots. Thinking there was an intruder, he went to the room. He heard the footsteps approaching the door. He opened the door to surprise the intruder, but to his surprise, there was nothing but darkness.
That was the first intimation of supernatural occurrences in the Sta. Ana mansion.
Mysterious old man
The next day, Arquette told his master about the footsteps. Joseph told him to keep mum.
Life went on. The Arcache residence became a favorite party place of the family’s friends. Every weekend, the family would entertain guests at the 26-seat dining table, made of solid narra.
While each member of the family had his or her own room, the other eight rooms were for friends on a sleepover. Everything seemed hunky-dory until strange episodes recurred.
One night, Arcache’s daughter Queenie—the older sister of Maurice, who would become the country’s premier society columnist— had just come home from a party. It was Joseph’s practice to see if the children were already in bed in their rooms.
As Queenie tucked herself in bed, she heard her bedroom door open and saw a silver-haired man in a barong looking at her. She thought it was her father. Then the man walked towards the balcony—and right through the balcony door.
Queenie shrieked and bolted out of the room, “I saw a ghost!” Joseph awoke and after hearing her story, dismissed it yet again.
The family had a cook, a migrant from Macau, who would come every morning to bake the pan de sal. One morning, he was found unconscious, sprawled on the floor outside the kitchen. When the patriarch woke him up, the cook shivered and told him that he was resigning after serving them for 15 years.
Earlier, the cook had seen a man sitting on the steps with his head lowered on his knees. He thought it was Louie Bernasconi, the eldest of Mary’s sons from a previous marriage, who had been locked out after coming home from a party. When the man looked up, the cook fainted at the sight of a ghoulish face.
Maurice’s grandmother once told him that ghosts liked to appear in mirrors. As the statuesque abuela was washing her face, she saw a taller gentleman peering over her shoulder.
For the longest time, there were sightings of a tall, aging gentleman clad in barong tagalog and black pants, or in horse-riding attire.
Cursing God
Old parish priests from Sta. Ana church told stories about Dy Buncio, who would ride his horse or a carriage from Binondo to inspect the construction of his home. He died when he was in his late 40s, but not, as lore would have it, after cursing God for a life interrupted. There were also speculations that he was so attached to his possessions that he kept coming back to his home.
Another time, Pearlie, Maurice’s younger sister, came home with Rene Knecht from a formal affair. Maurice and his friends were to follow them later. She asked Rene to escort her in the living room while waiting for Maurice. Rene was regaling her with stories into the wee hours. Suddenly he heard a music box playing. Pearlie shivered and told him that the family didn’t own one.
Knecht dashed to his car with Pearlie behind him. As the guards opened the gate and Rene turned on the engine, the couple heard heavy banging on the fender. The spirit was offended, they thought. They fled to the farthest corner down the street and waited for Maurice to come home.
Other spirits
Maurice and his sisters believed there were spirits other than the old man.
Mary Arcache had just finished her evening prayers in front of the altar, decked with life-size santos. She suddenly heard a woman whimpering. Mary turned and saw a chemise-clad woman sitting on the stairway, her head bowed. Thinking it was the house help, she walked to the woman to ask what the matter was.
The woman was silent. The moment she looked at Mary, her image flitted down the stairs and outside the window.
Another time, Maurice’s newly married sister, Olivia, asked two household help to keep watch outside her room. She didn’t want to be alone waiting up for her husband.
As the two maids sat under the stairs, they heard rude sounds of “Sssst! Sssst!” From the window, they saw an old man looking stern and wagging his finger at them. Their screams awakened Joseph who came down with a gun. The next day, they resigned.
Minnie’s wet visit
Attending a merienda cena held in the garden, well-known socialite Minnie Osmeña had to excuse herself to go to Pearlie’s bathroom. While there, she heard successive knocks on the door.
“Pearlie, don’t play jokes,” she said. The pounding persisted. Recalled Maurice, now with a chuckle: “Minnie stopped her weewee, stood up and opened the door. There was nobody outside. She screamed and ran down with her panties halfway down her legs.”
It wasn’t only the Arcaches who were known for their fabulous parties. Apparently the spooks had their own. Sometimes when the family would come home from a party, they would hear voices as if another party was going on in the dining room, with crystals clinking and cutlery tinkering.
The majordoma and her husband, who slept in a room under the dining room, also heard chattering and the jangle and clatter of plates and silverware. “The dead are partying upstairs,” they’d tell each other.
As the husband stood up to peer, the couple heard a crash of silverware on the floor. Outside their door, one of the narra boxes containing the silverware had mysteriously dropped to the floor. Yet, there were no signs of theft in the house.
The house wasn’t just a place for spooks. Electricians would discover snakes under the roof. It turned out that at the turn of the century, snakes were placed there to eat the rats.
Joseph decided to leave them alone since they never bothered the family and protected the household.
Maurice spooked
Maurice Arcache had his share of encounters:
“I usually write my columns after midnight. Then I heard this heavy knock on the door. I said, ‘Come in.’ The banging continued. ‘Come in,’ I kept saying. But it went on. I opened the door and it was black. I closed the door, switched on the lights and turned on the radio to full blast. I screamed, ‘Pleeease leave me aloooone!’” he recalled as his creaseless face emoted mock horror.
One bedtime, Maurice heard the shower turned on and the toilet paper rolling continuously. “I inspected the bathroom and it was as dry as the Sahara desert,” he said.
Maurice’s longtime companion, photographer Alex Van Hagen, didn’t believe in ghosts. One time in Maurice’s room, he heard the sound of heavy boots coming from the floor above him. He told Maurice there was a burglar.
But as if going through walls, the boots marched across two empty rooms which used to be occupied by Maurice’s sisters, who had gotten married by then and didn’t live in the mansion anymore. Eventually, Van Hagen got used to these inexplicable occurrences.
In the ’80s and ’90s, the Arcache mansion became a Halloween staple. When the Pasig river cruise was organized as an alternative mode of transportation, a tour guide taking passengers from the Jones Bridge to Guadalupe would point out the Sta. Ana mansion as a haunted house.
Back in the ’80s, Maurice even asked Inner Mind columnist Jaime Licauco to look into the haunting. Licauco’s chest tightened as he felt the eerie presence of spirits in the master bedroom. He noted that spirits were all over the place.
The helpers once saw an image of a headless woman or three ghosts sitting in the garden.
Licauco explained that some of the spirits were in transit. As for the partying, “they don’t think they’re dead. They continue to do normal activities.” He observed, “Maurice had gotten used to them. His attitude was live and let live.”
Heart attack, injuries
The Sta. Ana mansion became an empty nest when most of the siblings moved out with their families. Maurice and Alex were left with seven maids, a cook and a driver. The Arcache siblings then sold the house to a Chinese businesswoman.
“I told my sisters: ‘If the house is dismantled, we keep the wood doors, stained glass, wrought iron grills and the tiles. Stipulate that in the contract,’” said Maurice.
The condition was never honored. As the house was being demolished, the engineer supervising the demolition suffered a heart attack. As the second floor was being dismantled, the contractor broke his two legs after a fall on the site; he quit his job. The architect died of a heart attack.
Maurice says the new owner tried to sell the property but in vain. Maurice has never returned to his former address.
The house may be gone now, but Licauco says the spooky vibrations of the salvaged architecture may have been transferred to several new owners.

URDANETA CITY -- Once completed, the P12-million Fray Urdaneta Park and monument being built in front of the new city hall here will be a masterpiece.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who inspected the park on Friday, is expecting this since four national artists have been commissioned by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to collaborate on the project.
The park is dedicated to Fray Andres de Urdaneta, a Spanish priest and navigator, after whom this city was named.
"I'm very happy… to be able to see this masterpiece in the making scheduled to be finished in March," said Arroyo.
Arroyo also observed the palay procurement program of the National Food Authority in nearby Binalonan town before proceeding to Baguio City to spend the rest of the holidays.
The national artists who have collaborated on the project were Napoleon Abueva (visual arts), who will create the wooden boat replicating Fray Urdaneta's original ship; Abdulmari Asia Imao (visual arts), who will work on the actual bronze monument of Fray Urdaneta; Ildefonso Santos Jr. (architecture), who will design and landscape the park; Dr. Alejandro Roces (literature), who will write the project's text in English and Spanish; and Benedicto "BenCab" Cabrera (visual arts), who will contribute a mural to the collective art design of the plaza.
Arroyo issued Proclamation No. 1423 in December 2007 declaring 2008 as the "Year of Urdaneta" in recognition of the Spanish priest's achievements and his contributions to Philippine culture and history.
The proclamation also created the Urdaneta 500 Commission, which would involve members of the private sector and to be co-chaired by Antonio Ynchausti and Roces.
"We will be back again when the Mayor of Ordizia, the hometown of Fray Urdaneta, comes here for the inauguration of the monument," Arroyo said.
This city had forged sister city relations with Ordizia during Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr.'s visit to Spain in 2007.
"When this opens in March, a huge delegation from Spain will be in attendance," said Cecile Guidote Alvarez, NCCA executive director. "It's going to be a world class park," she said.
Alvarez said this was the first time that five national artists were tapped to collaborate on a project.
"We will have a global attention with it. It will be magnet for tourism, especially among Hispanic-heritage countries," Alvarez said.
Historical records showed that Fray Urdaneta never set foot in this city. It was another Spanish priest, Father Andres Manzano, who named this city after Fray Urdaneta, when it was founded as a town on Jan. 8, 1858.

i was persuaded to try it, yes :bash:
i was literally frozen with fear on the first run thinking---was the ride periodically checked and certified safe by the proper authorities?... even star city|enchanted kingdom rides had histories of freak accidents (right?)... and a lot of other crazy thoughts passed through my mind while suspended mid-air on what appeared to be an unstable piece of contraption) :ohno:
anyway, i regained enough courage to get the cam and fire some lousy shots on the return trip :D
try anything once---my motto
Not my cup of tea too. Forgot where my balls were located after riding the Cyclone Loop at Star City. Stars kept spinning around my head till we got home after riding the Octopus. Terra firma is the best place for me.
Anyway, I glad they dismantled it. It's not fitting for a "Quezon Memorial".

[dx] January 28th, 2009, 04:11 AM Wowow! My thread na palang ganto? Bongga! I never looked at it intently pero when I saw the map, I realized this would be one big project of the city government. Kudos to Mayor Rosal and his good cohorts. Hehehe!
Yup, the rendering looks great, especially the last one (updated). I hope the finished project will look even better. :okay:

wow! ganda ng iloilo.. meron palang fort san pedro sa iloilo? kala ko sa cebu lang yun. :okay::okay:
^^ Lie low talaga ang Fort San Pedro ng Iloilo. It's one of the neglected heritage sites of Iloilo City :ohno: It still has a great view of the sunset, Iloilo Strait, and Guimaras Island though.

Yes, so low that only the base was left and now facing the wrath of nature as the sea reclaims the west embankment of the Fort.
The latest post of the base ruins:

This was the Fuerza San Pedro (formerly Fuerza Santo Rosario) during the American Colonial Era. In World War II, the Americans pulverized the said fort by bombs thinking that the Japanese forces were still there. After the war, the fort was never rebuilt.

Sleepwalker March 9th, 2009, 12:01 PM Cebu Business Park, IT Park...Heheheh...Joke lang.
The only public park I am familiar is the Plaza Independencia...There is a family park run by MCWD(Metro Cebu Water District), but it has an entrance fee of P10 per head.

Tnx to fellow Davao forumers for the pictures....
THESE BOTH HOTELS are towering along J.P. Laurel Avenue.
The Cuizon Hotel stands right infront of our house, this hotel is very haunted daw.
Like Paranormal experts have seen shopping ghost, ghosts in a conference, cashier ghosts, guard ghosts when the Duty Free was still on operations! It's a real story. In the office, many busy ghosts din daw.
Then, the story of the hotel naman, rooms daw are filled, then they order coffee, when the staff knew no one checked-in, when they will get back the food, it's already consumed, with lipstick marks on the cup.
And nuon daw kasi. Mei history sya na nagpatayan daw ang mga workers nito. So yeah, they contribute to the ghost populations here.
Today, maaliwalas na sya, and mei plano na ata na gibain yun for a new development. :)

i like the background music of this video. who made sinulog, bato balani sa gugma, and huni sa santo nino (im not so sure about the title of the last song) into an orchestral piece? which symphony orchestra played it? i can imagine a great tenor and a colloratura soprano singing solos with a large satb chorus. bravo!

Cabo Santiago
Lighthouses all over the islands are essential but silent witnesses of the past. More than just an aid for navigators and mariners negotiating their vessels between the islands, lighthouses form part of the of Spanish colonial period’s legacy.
Manuel Noche, an architecture professor at the University of Santo Tomas, will mount an exhibit of these lighthouses in Cagayan de Oro on May 11 to 17 as part of the annual Filipino Heritage Festival celebrated the entire month of May.
The exhibit hopes to draw more attention to the preservation of the lighthouses designed and built by Spanish engineers in the 19th and 20th centuries. By the end of the Spanish regime, the Spaniards had built 55 lighthouses; by 1926, during the American period, there were already 193, as well as buoys set in place.
“These imposing structures replicate the vast knowledge of the people who built them,” Noche said. “They transcend time and all kinds of structures.” He is the author of “Lonely Sentinels of the Sea – The Spanish Colonial Lighthouses in the Philippines.”
Faro de Isla de Cabra, built on the northwest corner of Lubang Island, guards the entrance to Manila Bay. It stands over a barren landscape, its original lens still intact.
Faro de Cabo Santiago along the coast of Calatagan, Batangas, was first lit on December 15, 1890. It was recently renovated, and continues to render useful service 119 years later.
In the province of Iloilo, Faro de Isla Calabazas stands prominently overlooking the Guimaras Strait. It guides vessels entering both the ports of Iloilo and Bacolod. The tower, its lantern and accessories were manufactured by Berbier Bernard y Tourenne de Paris.
By far the most majestic among “the sentinels of the sea” is the Cabo Bojeador in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. At the top of the ascent on first, concrete steps ending in a narrow spiral steel staircase, the amazing view from a height of almost 200 meters is well worth the effort. An expanse of field leads to the point where the jagged, rocky shoreline curves around from the western coast to the north.
Turn around, and one gazes at an intricate array of little and large lenses which throw a powerful beam visible for several miles over the South China Sea.
The lighthouses built by the Spaniards are classified according to the strength of lenses refracting light out to sea. Primero Orden provides navigational aids for international vessels, Segundo Orden, guides ships inside the archipelago, Trece Orden assists ships through narrow straits, and so on up to Sixto Orden.
A Spanish tourist visiting Cabo Bojeador surmises that since cabo means cape, the point’s original name could have been Cabo Ojeador — the cape from which one looks (out to sea). Lost in translation, one might say.
Filipino Heritage Festival Executive Director Anna Maria L. Harper, one of several original founders of the Heritage Conservation Society, has long advocated a bed-and-breakfast (B&B)operation right inside the lighthouses. Such a tourist attraction would help support the maintenance of the sentinels. It appears Bojeador may be starting to offer B and B.
The Filipino Heritage Festival is held yearly the entire month of May to pay tribute and remind us of our proud heritage. It is supported by the Department of Tourism, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Security Bank Corporation.

Asturiano May 19th, 2009, 01:19 AM Fort San Antonio Abad is one of the least forgotten spanish fort in Manila. If they just built the central bank of the Philippines in the newly reclaimed land from the bay and restored the sorrounding the area around the fort. Fort San Antonio Abad would be another tourist attraction in Manila.
