There's no city called Al Jouf :) It's a provience. I think the University will be in the city of Skaka (the capital of the provience). I'm not sure what's the area of Skaka but it's definetly bigger than 7 sq km :)

Actually, a town with the name of Jouf does exist. It's about 30 km west of Skaka. You probably know it by a different name though: Domat al-Jandal.

Anyway, nice looking project. But what matters is the human factor. I hope they can attract quality academics.

ok lighten me up! I know that Domat al-jandal is a ruins... but does it also have a modern place with people living in it?

I think i saw pictures of it once on an arabic tourism forum (http://www.travel4arab.com/vb/index.php?)

but im too lazy to get them back... because every 5-10 seconds there is people who post new topics and reply to new threads you can't follow up...

الجوف: شاكر أبوطالب
يعتقد بعض السعوديين أن هناك مدينة سعودية تسمى «الجوف»، وأنها العاصمة الإدارية لمنطقة الجوف، الواقعة في الجزء الشمالي الغربي من المملكة، غير أن هذا الاعتقاد لا يعكس الواقع، لأن اسم «الجوف» يطلق على المنطقة فقط، مثل منطقتي «عسير» و«القصيم».ويطلق لفظ الجوف على عدد من الأماكن في الجزيرة العربية، منها الساحل الممتد بين مكة والمدينة، والإقليم الواقع بين نجران وحضرموت، أما الجوف القابع في شمال الجزيرة العربية، والذي كان يسمى قديما «جوف آل عمرو»، نسبة إلى بني عمرو من قبيلة طي، وكانت تسكن دومة الجندل، والتي ذكرت باسم «أدوماتو» في القرن الثامن قبل الميلاد، ثم دومة الجندل من قبل الإسلام وحتى وقت قريب.

وتعني كلمة الجوف في اللغة العربية، المطمئن من الأرض؛ وذلك لانخفاض أرضه عما حولها، وكان هذا الانخفاض يوصف «بالنقرة»، وذكر عمر رضا كحالة في كتابه «جغرافية شبه جزيرة العرب»، الجوف مدينة صغيرة تقع في واد منخفض، تكتنفها الجبال من جميع جهاتها، وهي منطقة زراعية كبيرة واقعة إلى شمال النفود على رأس وادي السرحان.

ويعود تاريخ الجوف الى أكثر من أربعة آلاف عام، بحسب الشواهد التاريخية القائمة، ومنطقة الجوف عموماً والجوف خصوصاً منطقة زراعية وفيرة المياه، تشتهر بزراعة النخيل، حيث يتجاوز عددها نصف مليون نخلة، فيما يبلغ عدد أشجار الزيتون مليون شجرة، إضافة الى المنتجات الزراعية الأخرى.

وأسبغ هذا الموقع الجغرافي على منطقة الجوف مكانة مهمة منذ العصر القديم، فهي طريق التجارة بين الجزيرة العربية وبلاد الشام ومصر، كما أنها طريق الحجاج البري إلى بيت الله الحرام، وما زال موقع المنطقة يحتل مكانة أساسية كمنطقة حدودية للمملكة، خاصة أنه يوجد بها منفذ «الحديثة»، الذي يعتبر أكبر منفذ بري في الشرق الأوسط، وتعتبر المنطقة البوابة الشمالية للمملكة.

وتعد مدينة سكاكا العاصمة الإدارية لمنطقة الجوف، وتقع في الطرف الشمالي لصحراء «النفود الكبير»، وهي من أهم مدن المنطقة وأكثرها سكاناً ومساحة، فيها فروع الدوائر الحكومية، كما تحتضن المدينة عددا من مزارع النخيل والزيتون والفاكهة، كذلك فيها منطقة صناعية وبعض المراكز التجارية، أيضاً بقربها أقدم موقع أثري استوطنه الإنسان في الجزيرة العربية، وهو «الشويحطية»، وقد كانت مدينة سكاكا في سابق عهدها عبارة عن مزارع من النخيل أكثر من كونها مدينة ذات مظهر حضاري.

We're both right. The towns are named Skaka and Domat al-Jandal, but very commonly they are called Jouf city. In the map I have at home, Domat al-Jandal is labeled al-Jouf. I have seen some government agencies call Skaka Jouf city as well !

Anything happening on this dream university yet?

It's nice to see the designers went with many small roundabouts rather than traffic lights. If used properly, they can be more efficient and faster at organizing traffic.

Any updates of this project? I think this University will be built near or in Skaka.
