View Full Version : Completed: Texas A&M University at Qatar (Education City)
suzan November 26th, 2006, 02:49 PM The next few years will bring remarkable growth in the facilities at Education City. By the end of 2005, new student and staff housing will have been completed, along with a ceremonial court for holding graduation ceremonies and other official functions.
By the end of 2006, the first phase of Qatar Science and Technology Park will be open for business and populated with tenants. A massive, state-of-the-art convention center -- another signature piece of architecture by Arata Isozaki -- will be nearing completion. A shopping center at the north end of Education City will serve the growing number of students, staff and faculty living on site.
Texas A&M University at Qatar will be ready to occupy its purpose-built facility, designed by the Mexican architects Legorreta & Legorreta. And Qatar Foundation staff will be working in a new headquarters building.
By 2007, there will be a central library, a student center, a club for staff and faculty and a ceremonial entrance. Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar will be teaching classes and conducting research in its new building, also designed by Legorreta & Legorreta. Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service will have its own building, too.
Further down the road, Education City will welcome a 350-bed, all-digital Specialty Teaching Hospital -- a world-class facility offering general care and specializing in women's and children's health. A golf course and other sports facilties will further enhance Education City's recreational amenities.
And, very soon, Education City will be adding new partners and new programs. Qatar Foundation's immediate targets include a school of communications and journalism, as well as an Islamic studies center. All of these will be provided with purpose-built facilities.

“Today we are celebrating the true spirit of humanity that spans geographical borders. We are celebrating educational excellence and the partnership between two peoples and institutions,” said Bush.
The former president described the Emir as a "wonderful leader" and a "wonderful friend" and Sheikha Mozah as the "spirit" behind all the great things happening at Education City.
Bush lauded the Qatari leadership saying that they have realised the importance of investing in human capital and empowering men and women in the country through education and science and technology. He also highlighted the importance of diversity and developing critical thinking among the youth.
Referring to his revived interest in parachute jumping even in this old age, Bush Senior said: "There is a parallel between a parachute and the human mind. Both will function only when they are open."
He said the presence of Rick Perry and Becky Gates at the ceremony points to the utmost importance they have given to the growing educational ties between Qatar and the US. Bush concluded his words saying that the best in the Qatar-US relations is yet to come.

The First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani, with other dignitaries, at the inauguration of the new engineering building of Tamuq in Doha yesterday.
Perry, in his speech, said Education City has emerged as a unique centre in the Middle East by "fortifying young minds" through education. "We should engage with the world and break down all barriers. Education is the key to unlock the door of opportunities," Perry said, while calling for strengthening the relationship between Qatar and the US in the educational and economic fields.
Dr Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, Vice-President for Education at Qatar Foundation, and Abdullah bin Hamad drew attention to the efforts of Qatar to develop a stable economy by investing in human capital.
The idea behind Education City is not just to impart learning, but to create a solid research base that does not exist in the Middle East, said Sheikh Abdulla. “We cannot rely on oil and gas forever and should generate other sources of income. The only viable alternative is to develop the capabilities of our people,” he stressed.
He hoped that through Education City, “the brain drain in the Middle East will be replaced by brain magnets”. He said Qatar Foundation decided to go in for a partnership with Texas A&M University in the US as it is the best institution in Texas in the field of engineering technology.
Abdullah bin Hamad said Qatar’s booming economy has been looking for skilled professionals in all fields and the Qatari leadership is committed to meet this demand through investing in education and innovation.
Highlighting the partnership between Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Tamuq, he said, 55 Tamuq students are being offered scholarships by QP.
Dr Ed J Davis, Interim President, Texas A&M University, presented an obelisk designed by a Texas A&M expert that depicted the heritage of early Arab scientists. He said the obelisk will be displayed at a prominent place at the new engineering building. Dr Mark H Weichold, Dean and CEO of Tamuq, emceed the ceremony.
The speeches were followed by a video presentation on Tamuq, with the participation of a group of students on stage. Then a specially designed train came and halted in front of the stage that took the Emir, Sheikha Mozah, Bush and other dignitaries for the formal opening of the new building.
Pre-ceremony entertainment was provided by the Aggie Wranglers, Century Sounds and the Pearl Sword Troupe.
