Culwulla, this is indeed a huge mess, since different people build their buildings very differently. Besides the scheme you mentioned, some also omit floor 13 (for westerners reasons) some dont omit any, while some many omit 4, 14, 24, 34, but not necessarily 44, 54, 64, etc. (this is because 4 sounds like die, 14 sounds like will definitely die, 24 sounds like easy to die, 34 sounds like live or die, but 44 doesn't sound like anything, 54, sounds like won't die (or not die), and the others are not very taboo either (afaik)

Still at level 51 ??? It runs somewhat slow although its doing well and i like this supertall as much as the other supertalls UC.....!

That's why I asked :)

I figured that BD, tall as it may be, have a LOT of the floor area around the podium thing (the bottom levels on renders) and tapers off really quickly, so I figured ICC has a more uniform floor area throughout its height, so maybe that's why it takes so long, and when finished, even though it might only be 2/3 the height of BD, will have a better area ratio.

BTW, it doesn't take an engineer to figure out that if you have a tiny area compared to a big huge one, it'll probably be smaller! (barring any aesthetics and utility space)

Sure, i was more thinking of the size of each floor, affecting the construction speed. Obviously it makes much more sense to build each floor as large as possible, since you can use elevators etc. more effectively, compared to how much space is lettable/sellable. So in an economical point of view "fat" scrapers always win...

Well there comes a point when evacuation and air conditioning/utilities becomes a problem. Mostly evacuation. Of course in terms of floor area / foot print ratio I agree completely with you. But then again, BD is really well done and aesthetically its tops!

I don't know why people are so obsessed with the construction speed of this building. It's not as it's stagnant. It makes good progress month on month and it's obviously gonna get there within about a year so what's the fuss? :dunno:

the progress of this building seems slow to a lot of people on this forum probably due to the crazy speeds buildings are going up in, for example, dubai and shanghai. compare it to buildings in london and new york and it's rising more than fast enough. maybe buildings have gone up quicker in hong kong before but, as many others have said on this thread, there are several buildings being constructed at the same time on this site so it's bound to be slowed somewhat. perhaps when US6 is nearer completion we will see an increase in speed.

This is exactly the idea of the developer of IFC & ICC(same developer). They named this project "The Gateway of Victoria Harbor".

Still, it'd be nice if the restrictions were eventually lifted, if HK develops to a point when it can support 500-600 m skyscrapers. I agree that tall things like the IFC is a bit of misfit, especially when its placed in the foreground (when viewed from TST).

The main business district is on the northern side of Hong Kong Island, which has the southern tip of the Kowloon PENINSULA (not island) facing it. The New airport is located on a separate island that is largely undeveloped (compared to Kowloon and HK Island) called Lantau Island. The old island WAS in the middle of downtown, but in Kowloon, not Hong Kong Island.

That answers your question, I hope.

The complex is building above the Kowloon Station which was built in 1998,the West Kowloon Station on the Kowloon Southern Link now under construction and the proposed terminus of the new express cross-border rail line is next to ICC ,the next tallest building of Hong Kong will be at the juncture of three rail lines!

I really think it has more to do with their building schedule, rather than HK's capability to build fast. This tower was planned to finish in two phases. The first one is due to complete by the end of this year, and the current construction status is already beyond what they need to build for phase 1. And i believe phase 2 is due to complete by end of 2009, so I think that's why the growth of the core, and the floor slabs are slow now. It will pick up later though i think.

you are correct about this. Actually, the Discovery channel program about Burj dubai two weeks ago also mentioned that the higher they go, the flow time to build one floor has decreased due to its floor size (being smaller at top).

thats a fluke from original "floor ht" they reduced it due to some building guidelines...

it still remained "118 floors" they change the lower floors designation to retain the "118 floor" but for your information chinese doesnt like numbers that ends with 4. MEANING: it doesnt have 4th floor, 14, 24, 34 and so on...

Yeah it's weird something about the slightly indistinct blurring and all the colours reminds me of a nebula, specifically Rho Ophiuchi. Very beautiful city and an incredible view, I can't wait til I can go there and see it all.

Hanoi Road actually looks really good from Nathan Road further up in Mongkok. It actually aligns very well with it. From across the harbour, it is perfectly framed with the Peninsula from Central.

Magnificent collection!!!

HK never seizes to amaze, its in my opinion the unrivaled #1 when it comes to dense megacities. Just looking at some good shots of the IFC gives me such a "wow" impression and feeling, i bet its even better actually being theire. I expect nothing less from ICC.

^ Those are actually boats. They don't look like fishing vessels, perhaps dredgers, but I'm not too sure. That area is a typhoon shelter.

Yes, but besides that complex, the towers around it dont give enough support for ICC, unlike HK Island. Nevertheless, its an amazing tower, better even than the BD (of course, I'm biased :))

ive worked out there numbering floors without "4" in number.so thus far floors 4,14,24,34,44,54 dont exist. Im certain of this because ive scrutinized the tower and construction and plans, it now says lev58 on core which should be 260m high which means its higher then adjacent 255m Harbour towers which it isnt.?? but If you take the 6 missing floors away, it equals 52 above the grd or 240m. which i think it looks like compared to Harbour towers.
does everyone agree?
remember the number 4 is bad luck in chinese culture.

Sun Hung Kai Properties is naming its Kowloon Station Development Package 6 residential project 'The Cullinan'. This will be Hong Kong's tallest residential building; a luxury project sure to attract international attention. A HK$3-million Sparkling Miracle Show will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong in Central this evening (March 22) to unveil the new landmark.

New business core

The developer is investing over HK$20 billion in Kowloon Station Development Packages 5, 6 & 7, which is the largest integrated project Hong Kong has seen in recent years. Package 6 is the last component and will include the world's third-tallest building International Commerce Centre, The Cullinan, a world-renowned W Hotel and Ritz Carlton, luxury serviced apartment residences and million-square-foot Elements mall. The development has excellent transportation connections as befits major international business centres like Manhattan in New York, Canary Wharf in London and Le Defense in Paris, reinforcing Hong Kong's status as an international city.

Tallest residential blocks

The twin blocks in The Cullinan will be Hong Kong's tallest residential towers at 270 metres. The project on this prime waterfront location will have glass curtain walls and sweeping views of the harbour. The glass façade will give the twin towers a futuristic image in line with the nearby International Commerce Centre.

The Cullinan stands for prestige and luxury

Kowloon Station Development Package 6 was named after the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond found in 1905; the largest diamond in the world. The two largest polished gems from the Cullinan diamond are now mounted on the Scepter and Cross and Imperial State Crown in the British crown jewels, and similarly, the two towers will stand as brilliant gems embodying royal prestige and setting a new international benchmark for luxury residences.

HK$3 million opening show

The developer is spending HK$3 million to stage a grand ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong to unveil The Cullinan luxury residential development to over 300 guests from business and government.

The Sparkling Miracle Show will employ glittering lights and a large mirror on stage for a visual effect echoing the futuristic image of the two towers. The highlight of the show will be shadow dancing on a water-filled stage by six performers in sparkling costumes, graciously unveiling The Cullinan's design.

Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency Executive Director Victor Lui said: "Its breathtaking height, distinctive appearance and first-rate construction and materials will set The Cullinan apart. The project is the last residential component of the Kowloon Station Development. I tried to get a close up picture last time, as I have been examining the methods of photographers on this site, especially the floor-number scrutinising over at the Burj Dubai forum (a place that scares me). I will try harder next time to zoom in on the floor number.

Interesting name...I must say the Union Square project's Chinese names have been quite flattering, much more so than the English ones. Always something about the sky and heavens.

And I didn't know it was going to be serviced apartments. I was always under the impression that it would be office space and hotel.

Yep, the missing 4 makes sense. It's the same setup with the 62 (actual) storied Cheung Kong Centre at Queen's Road Central.
