Nothing could better symbolise Qatar’s desire to create world-class architecture than the Doha Convention Centre and Tower which will bring a truly futuristic aspect to the Doha skyline.

Projected to cost US$1.7 billion and covering 124,220 square metres of development, architects Murphy Jahn, famous for the Deutsche Post building in Bonn and Munich Airport, have produced a design which is innovative and inspirational.

The Tower will soar 105 storey’s into the sky and offer panoramic city views from its prestigious central location on the Corniche. It will be home to a hotel with 300 guest rooms, 80 serviced apartments and 300 residential apartments.

The Convention Centre, adjacent to the Tower, will 87,000 square metres of convention space and is destined to become an important regional and international exhibition location.

This is the Barwa supertall we talked about before, that will replace West Bay's current exhibition centre. Actually Qatari Diar owns a 45% stake in Barwa, that's why. Too bad the render is not bigger. But the tower looks very slender! Good thing!

I found this render on a website from a company specialised in environmentally sustainable materials.
It's the same architect as mentioned in Qatari Diar's news.

Now the render looks different. This might be an old version since this dates from June 2006, whereas Qatari Diar's new is only days old. But who knows!

Architect on board for convention centre

Publication Date: 03/31/2006

The US' Murphy Jahn has started concept designs for the Doha Convention Centre & Tower (DCCT) project, which will include the tallest building in the state. The estimated $600 million project, being handled by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, will be located close to the Sheraton Doha hotel (MEED 23:12:05).

The centrepiece of the 68-month project will be the tower, which will be at least 400 metres high and have a built-up area of 180,000 square metres. It will contain a hotel, apartments and retail units. The built-up area of the convention centre will be 100,000 square metres. In addition, the development will have parking spaces for 4,000 cars.

Under Qatari Diar's schedule, the balance of the consultancy contracts will be awarded in the coming months, with enabling works starting in July/August and construction beginning in 2007.

Speaking at the MEED Major Non-Energy Project Opportunities in Qatar conference on 27 March, Qatari Diar development director Rowen Colman confirmed that on the estimated $5,000 million Lusail development, China's Sinohydro had begun mobilising for the $433 million marine, earthworks and site preparation package, while a team made up of the UK's Halcrow, Denmark's COWI and Hyder Consulting, also of the UK, had been appointed to provide pre- and post-consultancy and quantity surveying services at a cost of $67 million. (MEED 24:03:06)

Colman said tendering would accelerate in late 2006/early 2007 on a host of other contracts on the Lusail development. They will include sewerage, water, irrigation, electrical, and storm-water drainage networks.

Turner takes tallest tower

Publication Date: 06/02/2006

The US' Turner Construction International has been appointed project manager on the construction of the Doha Convention Centre & Tower (DCCT), set to contain the capital's tallest building. The estimated $600 million project, being handled by Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, will be located close to Doha City Centre (MEED 31:3:06).

The centrepiece of the 68-month project will be the tower, which will be about 550 metres high, house 104 storeys and have a built-up area of 180,000 square metres. It will contain a hotel, apartments and retail units. The built-up area of the convention centre will be 100,000 square metres. In addition, the development will have parking spaces for 4,000 cars.

The US' Murphy Jahn has completed the concept designs and is moving into the schematic design phase. Enabling works is due to start by the beginning of the third quarter with construction beginning in 2007. The project is scheduled for completion by 2012.

Tharoone, the title of the pic says it all. Its the design evolution of Burj Dubai since conception to the most recent design submission. It has no relation with this tower. If you read in the post you took this pic from or the website it came from, you would see by yourself.

the tower on the right is NOT the same building, Thaaron!!

it's the original design for the proposed Grollo Tower in Melbourne, Australia. due to several reasons, that tower was NEVER built, and the design was initially proposed for Burj Dubai. the Burj Dubai design then changed several times to the current idea on the far left, which is currently under construction.

and even IF the two towers look similar, so WHAT? buildings share ideas from one another, if they're not outright copies with a few adjustments. if they look similar, big friggin' deal, it doesn't signify anything.

the Doha tower shares a resemblance with the Shard London Bridge, a tower designed by Renzo Piano and scheduled for completion sometime in 2011. the design is far from unique, and i personally feel it should be a little more exciting given the modern nature of the future of Doha.

Massilia the whole plot is actually extremely deep and underneath the ground floor of the project is thousands of parking spaces . So, they are going to dig a huge hole in the ground to establish the foundations and create the basement parking level. I think there are 4 levels of basement parking divided according to the function they serve: commerical (mall), offices (tower), hotel exclusive (tower), convention center (annex of the mall).

Murphy Jahn Design 570m Tall Tower

Approval has been given for a new tower over half a kilometer tall for Doha, Qatar.

Located in the west bay area the Barwa Tower, named after developers Barwa Real Estate Company will stand at a massive 570 metres and have 108 floors.

A total deviation from a previous more interesting design, many could be mistaken for thinking the design comes from the pens of architects Denton Corker Marshall who designed he Grollo tower in Melbourne.

First appearances make this look almost carbon copy but in reality it has been designed by Chicago architects Murphy/Jahn Inc who were obviously running low on inspiration that particular day. Design revisions could however make the end product a little more distinctive as it evolves throughout the development process.

Its tall slender form which at night will cast an elegant mirror image in the bay is the towers only notable feature aside from its sheer height. With the usual glass façade the tower is almost an elongated pyramid that finishes just before reaching its non existent point.

Despite its rather mundane appearance the tower will have a few redeeming features including the lattice crown, observation stations which will offer spectacular views of the bay and surrounding city and revolving restaurants on the 100 - 108 levels.

As a mixed use tower, it will house luxury apartments, a hotel with an as yet unknown operator, a shopping mall, convention centre and many other amenities often seen in these opulent buildings.

It seems incredible to think that only a few years ago this tower would not only be headline news but in the running for the world's tallest building. It just goes to show that these days when skyscrapers on steroids are literally counted by the dozen, you need more than height to impress.

I think this is the exhibition center or underground parking/shopping mall on top--since the actual tower is located on the exact premises of the Qatar Exhibition Center (former).

This is the Grollo Tower, designed by Harry Seidler.

It was then used as the original proposition for Burj Dubai. It has to be the same tower. The Grollo tower was a real inspiration for towers such as SWFC, Freedom Tower and Russia Tower. You guys are damn lucky folk.

Qatari Diar to build 118-storey tower in Doha
QATARI DIAR, wholly owned by Qatar Investment Authority, plans to construct a 540m-high, 118-storey tower in Doha.
Once completed it would be the second tallest building after Burj Dubai, the company said.
The highrise will come up at the site of the old exhibition centre opposite the Sheraton, an official of Qatari Diar said at a meeting organised by the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry here yesterday.
He said the complex would include a five-star hotel and commercial and residential developments.

From the peninsula:

DOHA • Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company yesterday announced it has invited a limited number of pre-qualified contractors to bid for the third construction package for the Doha Exhibition Center & Tower, involving the tower and retail components of the project. Diar has been appointed as the main developer of the project by its owner, Barwa Real Estate Company.

The tower was designed by world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn, famous for the Deutsche Post building and the Sony Center in Berlin. The tower will be 112-storeys high and will offer panoramic city and blue water views from its location on the Corniche. It will house a luxurious hotel, apartments and penthouses. The building will also include substantial office area. The Exhibition Center, adjacent to the Tower, will provide an expansive retail area dedicated to luxury brands and exhibition space.

It is destined to become an important regional and international exhibition location.

"We are pleased to be entering this exciting new phase of the Doha Exhibition Center & Tower," said Ghanim bin Saad Al Saad, Qatari Diar CEO.

"This project will redefine the Doha skyline for years to come, and will help further position Qatar as a truly forward-looking country," he added.

The first construction package was for the piling works for the overall project, and the second, released just a few months ago, involved construction of the Exhibition Center.

The second package is due to be awarded before the end of this year.

Seems like its a 112 story tower and not 108--although I have seen the plans as being 108!
