harryc October 15th, 2008, 03:54 AM Damn I didn't realize that you can take photos as well as compile them.
The red trees w green elevator is nice.
CrazyAboutCities October 15th, 2008, 05:24 AM Loving it!!! Is it just me that I happen like it the way it is without a spire? I think it does look fabulous without one too.
Birdboy08 October 15th, 2008, 05:56 AM Well wait until you see the view WITH the Spire
Birdboy08 October 15th, 2008, 06:07 AM Also, does anyone know if there's going to be a completion ceremony or something? I heard it officially is supposed to be done by October 25, which also so happens to be my birthday, and I would like to go downtown and see it in person(not that i already haven't, I just mean completed)

Caca October 16th, 2008, 03:29 PM Yes, it is beautiful.
of course its beautiful :bash:
Really? Honestly I don't think so. The same with Sears Tower, both are not beautiful. I do not say that it is ugly, but it is not really beautiful. The Aqua Tower is much more beautiful than this.
Best regards !
Rizzato October 16th, 2008, 03:46 PM Really? Honestly I don't think so. The same with Sears Tower, both are not beautiful. I do not say that it is ugly, but it is not really beautiful. The Aqua Tower is much more beautiful than this.

You want to just go ahead and say what other towers are not beautiful, so you dont have to go on to many threads and do separate posts?
christos-greece October 16th, 2008, 06:27 PM Nice view :) ^^^^
tpe October 16th, 2008, 06:44 PM Really? Honestly I don't think so. The same with Sears Tower, both are not beautiful. I do not say that it is ugly, but it is not really beautiful. The Aqua Tower is much more beautiful than this.

I don't like Sears that much either, although it is overwhleming to look at.
Aqua is quite beautiful, IMO.
And I also think that Trump Tower is beautiful. It reminds you of of a modern-day ziggurat, and depending on where you view it, its aspect/profile changes -- is seems to be dynamic and static at the same time.

Flubnut October 16th, 2008, 08:28 PM The same with Sears Tower, both are not beautiful. I do not say that it is ugly, but it is not really beautiful.
I never look at Sears (or Hancock, or IBM) and think "wow, they're pretty." Instead, I see strong, purposeful, no-frills skyscrapers. Perfect buildings for Chicago, during the times they were built. I agree they don't look obviously "beautiful" like some of the newer curtain-walled buildings, but I don't believe SOM and Mies were going for beauty. They were about form following function, which is simply a different perspective on what makes a building beautiful.
But I walk by Trump every day, and it is DAMN pretty.
Birdboy08 October 16th, 2008, 08:32 PM Great pics again, andydie
Assemblage23 October 16th, 2008, 09:41 PM Andydie, great pictures. You showed us Trump from some angles I haven't seen before.

buildmilehightower October 18th, 2008, 04:12 PM ^^ I agree, but how much was that cheapest room on the 21st floor you stayed at?
Locke October 18th, 2008, 04:13 PM This building would work well near the Burj Dubai, it's a similar type of style. Makes me think the Burj would suit Chicago very well as well.
jimbo October 18th, 2008, 07:14 PM ^^ I agree, but how much was that cheapest room on the 21st floor you stayed at?
USD315 plus tax. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. The spa and gymnasium on the 14th floor was fantastic, with the running machines overlooking the loop and the Chicago river.

Yes. :)
Metalus October 22nd, 2008, 03:02 AM Yes. :)
In most cases no... The Trump happens to be sectioned vertically as a major part of the design and I think the spire will compliment this nicely.
JPBrazil October 22nd, 2008, 07:26 PM Will those circle shaped stores on the top be the Observation Deck?
the sock October 22nd, 2008, 07:50 PM lets hope so
gayscraper October 22nd, 2008, 10:24 PM Yeah, let's hope! It would be so cool if this would become the observation deck!
buildmilehightower October 22nd, 2008, 10:34 PM Yeah, let's hope! It would be so cool if this would become the observation deck!
Maybe, but I thought they were for control spaces and where the spire is rooted into.
b1gh0u5e October 22nd, 2008, 11:31 PM What's the date of the spire hoist?

A closer look at the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago spire
Scheduled installation dates: Nov. 1 and 2
Height: 227 feet, 8 inches
Materials: Three-legged steel sections clad in painted fiberglass
Number of sections: 13
Weight of sections: Up to 20,000 pounds each
Height of sections: Most are 20-feet tall. Some are 15-feet tall
Width of sections: The sections taper as the spire rises, to 4 feet from 10 feet.
Color: A shiny gray, in contrast to the white antennas of Sears Tower.
Construction method:
Installation Services Inc. of Genoa, located about 65 miles northwest of Chicago, will install the spire, which is similar in construction to the broadcast antennas of Sears Tower but will not be used for broadcasting. Trucks will deliver the sections to the Trump skycraper's riverfront site. A construction crane will lift them to the roof, one at a time. According to Installation Services president Ronald Romano, the crane will set the first 92 feet of the spire into place. Then a helicopter will lift the final pieces.

Trump in Trouble on Chicago Tower
(Newser) – Donald Trump's 92-story Chicago tower has been hit by a triple-whammy of the credit crunch, the housing slump, and sagging retail sales, making foreclosure a real danger, the Wall Street Journal reports. Trump, who developed the tower without partners, owes $1 billion on the project but has so far sold only $600 million in condo units and condo-hotel units. He's looking for an extension on a key loan due this Saturday.
Trump says the building—the tallest built in the US since the Sears Tower—can still be a success if he manages to sell the unsold units, which he estimates could be worth $475 million. "It could turn out to be a successful development depending on what happens in the market over the next two years," he tells the Journal. "The job is on time and on budget, and it's a beautiful job and will become an icon of the Chicago skyline."

I think I'm inclined to agree with your list. I also don't think many Chicagoans will rub it in New York's face that Trump is officially taller because I doubt many of them believe it actually is. Myself I am perfectly fine considering ESB taller.
http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/theskyline/2008/10/memo-to-mr-trum.html
Memo to Mr. Trump: Take a reader's advice and light up your spire at night
A reader of this blog, Steve Perlman, posed an excellent question Monday: Will the spire atop Donald Trump's Chicago mega-skyscraper be lit and, if so, how? "Chicago has arguably the most significant and unique collection of illuminated architectural peaks in the world," Steve wrote, acknowledging that New York and Hong Kong might beg to differ. "This was so dramatically illustrated as the entire Chicago skyline was illuminated in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month."
I put Steve's question to Andrew Weiss, an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, and here's what Andrew emailed back: "Lighting is still ahead of us. I was just talking to Mr. Trump about the upcoming spire installation [a helicopter will install the spire on Saturday and Sunday] and I mentioned your interest in it. He said that if lighting was important to you, he would make it 'the best lit spire in Chicago.'"
Memo to Mr. Trump: Lighting isn't just important to me. It's a point of pride for readers such as Steve and for Mayor Richard M. Daley, who ordered you to put up the spire in the first place. The mayor has been pushing building owners to light the tops of their buildings at night, correctly arguing that it promotes an image of vitality. Frankly, I'm astonished that King Rich's planners haven't already forced you to come up with a lighting plan. No matter how your spire turns out--and I'm not exactly confident it's going to live up to the standard set by the Chrysler Building, given that you're using the same materials for it as the broadcast antennas on Sears Tower--it should be a nighttime focal point. So by all means, check out your lighting options. And by the way, thanks for putting a spire up there instead of something totally garish like a giant letter "T."
spire1000 October 30th, 2008, 01:48 AM ^^best lit spire in chicago???i gotta see that!

Flubnut October 30th, 2008, 08:41 PM FYI: spire work delayed a couple more weeks, due to expected high boat traffic on the river.
http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/theskyline/2008/10/trump-sire-inst.html
the sock October 30th, 2008, 09:33 PM why would the boat traffic hold it up?
romanamerican October 30th, 2008, 10:01 PM why would the boat traffic hold it up?
Because they have to insure as much security as possible. If there is a high boat traffic that day due to some event, moving the installation of the spire a couple of days will not affect anybody money-wise and will be more risk-free, since the installation of the spire via helicopter will naturally affect the security of the river due to the location of Trump Tower.
CrazyAboutCities October 30th, 2008, 10:12 PM I'm curious... Will the spires be installed by tower crane or helicopter?
buildmilehightower October 30th, 2008, 10:22 PM ^^ by helicopter.
MichiganWolverine October 30th, 2008, 10:35 PM Actually, one recent post said that the first 92 feet or so would be by the tower crane and the helicopter would lift the final sections in.
Flubnut October 30th, 2008, 11:51 PM If there is a high boat traffic that day due to some event...
The event: At the end of the season, all the boats are moved off the lake, down the river and into dry dock for the winter. This weekend is one of the busiest, hence the safety concerns for boaters. It's actually quite entertaining to watch the bridges opening in sequence, to let the sailboats through.

Hahahahah, this one was truly hilarious..... I'm afraid to ask, but do you even know what delayed means when applied to a construction?
A hint: You do not use it when the building is topped out.....
come on, that was a really big help, can you guess?

Donald Trump filed suit against the lenders on his unfinished Chicago skyscraper, plunging the project into legal turmoil and highlighting the credit crunch's pervasive effects on real estate.
Mr. Trump is suing to extend a $640 million senior construction loan on the 92-story Trump International Hotel & Tower from a group of lenders led by Deutsche Bank AG and including a unit of Merrill Lynch & Co., Union Labor Life Insurance Co., iStar Financial Inc., a publicly traded real-estate investment trust, and Highland Funds, a unit of Highland Capital Management LP.

The more I think about it your right. The antennas are complex and massive, goes with the whole industrial theme, at least in chicago. This goes for both ST and JH I always love the way they light the structures at night and how it constantly changes during holidays and special occasions. It truly is a functional aesthetic.

WesternburbsTony23 November 13th, 2008, 04:54 AM I love love love this building so please don't get me wrong. I was at the Bears game this past weekend(yuck, damn Titans!). The only thing I do not like about this building is from far away it looks very slim. Does not have the power of a Hancock or Sears.
Again, I am nitpicking. Up close this thing is beautiful!!!!!!!!
yin_yang November 13th, 2008, 06:58 AM I was on the real LSD a few weeks ago and while looking at the CN Tower here at home bend and swirl (;)), I thought of how cool the Chicago skyline would be on LSD while standing on LSD.
Flubnut November 13th, 2008, 05:18 PM I invite you to try it. Just don't blame me when a taxi slams you over the guard rail and into the lake.
