Maybe different, maybe new... but not good. It has far too much bulk for a tower its height, the base overpowers the riverside and I don't have a clue what they were thinking when they designed the cap/spire.

There are however some angles which make it appear more elegant... looking straight north up Wabash Avenue provides a much more slender appearance

i agree that the plaza is out of tune with the tower....if memory serves me right the wrigley building is next door....i wouldn't think that it would be in tune with that building either.maybe some grey and white stone would have worked better.....although grey is.........well.......grey....hmmmm.

Tall trend continues as CTBUH announces tallest buildings of 2009
Building big is nothing new. In 1885, the ten storey Home Insurance Building designed by American architect William Le Baron Jenney, generally credited with the invention of the skyscraper, rose from the streets of Chicago. From then on the aspiration to construct tall, taller and tallest has fuelled the minds of architects and developers. With the release of the ten tallest buildings completed in 2009 by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), it is evident that the trend for tall continues onwards and upwards. Even with these precarious global economic conditions, the CTBUH reports that 2010 promises to be by far the most active in the history of the skyscraper.

Taking the top spot, The Trump International Hotel & Tower has been announced as the tallest building completed last year. The tower, designed by architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP and developed by the Trump Organisation is now the 7th tallest building in the world, standing at a height of 423 metres with 98 storeys.

Professor Sang Dae Kim, CTBUH Chairman said: “There is much to herald in the new Trump Tower. It pushes technological boundaries to achieve its great height, making a powerful mark on the Chicago skyline. In doing so, it becomes the tallest building completed in the western hemisphere since the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower was built, also in Chicago, some 35 years ago.”

Due to a variety of factors, a significant number of buildings which had been expected to complete in 2009 have been delayed, and will now likely open in 2010. The Burj Dubai (now Burj Khalifa) has already been completed at 828 metres and others anticipated in 2010 include Nanjing Greenland Financial Center (450m), The Index (Dubai, 328m), Wenzhou Trade Center (322m) and Capitol City Moscow Tower (302m).

Data produced by the CTBUH suggests that over 100 buildings 200m or taller will be completed worldwide within the next 12 months. From 2012, it is expected that there will be a drop in the number of tall buildings completed due to the global recession, until the worldwide economy recovers.

The brushed stainless steel (?) columns on the ground floor look exactly like the ones on The Residences At The Ritz-Carlton, a 48 story tower here in Philadelphia, across from City Hall.

The combination of black marbles on the floor, the granite on the walls and the metal grey of the rest of the building in Riverwalk Shops, the result of that combination is great

Honestly I'm not a huge fan of this marble.
I'd rather prefer a darker version.

It does not fit well with all this "metal-like" perception you have looking at the tower as a whole, IMHO.

This building is fabulous! I mentioned this before, but it goes well with the surrounding skyscrapers and Trump knows that everything in Real Estate is location, location location. I am extremely satisfied with the end result. Congratulations to everybody from Chicago. Your city has yet another stunning landmark. :)

It would have beeen about 9 million square feet if it had the same average floor area per floor as the Sears Tower, but it looks wider overall. Sears Tower is also wider overall than 1 WTC. I read somewhere that it would have had a capacity for 46,000 workers.

This tower has the biggest impact of anything built here is decades. Its enormous and extremely elegant while being placed in the heart of chicago right on the river. It already blends right into the fabric of the city better than most other buildings ever will, and feels like it was supposed to be here. Now that its built I cant imagine Chicago without it.

I agree with you but with so much variation between designs around the world (that ultimately affect overall height), there is a need for these classifications, in which case Trump wins...technically :p

at the end of the day though, numbers are just numbers and IMO the buildings presence or impact has a lot to do with what surrounds it, no matter how it stacks up against other buildings around the world.

Counting antennas is bullshit to be honest, for example the Sears Tower is certainly not taller than ICC.

I really like the river in the city core.
The skyscrapers along both sides of the mid-sized river makes Chicago really unique among other North American cities.
I would love to visit there, and see that in person.

the cladding in the pictures is THE best cladding i have ever seen. it looks perfect. this should be used so much more

Here are some few shots taken from the 14th floor (swimming pool and gym), 34th and 89th floor.
I guess the 89th floor photos might be unique on this forum. The whole floor is a 14,260 sf2 penthouse and has more than 7 huge bedrooms.
