I wish to speculate what those weird 'nails' are on that huge steel beam, are they to set into the concrete? Are these beams to radiate out from the core to create the transfer floor, with the concrete???

^^ The kind of "nails" are shear studs used in composite structures (steel/concrete) as connectors. There are also some sockets for reinforcements / post-tensioned bars or perhaps for post-tensioned cables.

You can see the cranes very well above the IBM from many vantage points. I see it the most from the west side where I live, I noticed recently that the cranes now have blinking red lights on the top, I assume to warn airplanes and helicopters. Once its got those blinking lights on top then its really tall IMO!

of course there is one :), you only can't see it because it is rising with the same speed as the floors arround it. only in a shot from above it is clearly visible

PresidentBjork
November 3rd, 2007, 07:32 PM
^ Yeah, it's due to the way the core outrigger system works. Since the walls of the core are working in tandem with the external columns to carry the load of the building it can't rise any faster than the rest of the structure. Pretty cool if you ask me, otherwise a building of this size on what is quite a small and slender sight it would be really hard to construct.

Nice pictures as usual BTW, anyone got any guesses on when it will start to rise again, or are we still far off?

Back on topic, the Trump Tower is really is a sight to see. I hadn't seen it in person before then and it is really going to be something to behold once its finished, especially from the bridge over the river.

Look at the difference in ceiling heights between what I labeled as #1 / 2 and the one below it...Clearly those two floors are much taller than the others below them...Which would indicate the two mech floors, right?

I hope you are right, but in the render you can see there is one floor below the mech floors which is also very tall, so there should be 3 taller floors below the setback :(

I may be mistaken I was comming home from work today and I just so happened to glance up at good ol' Trump as I was driving home (I don't recommend taking your eye's off the road for a second here in Chicago!) Have they started the rebar formwork for the level above this setback? Is the load transfer floor completed?

I would have to say, this towers best aspect, is its placement. The shape of the tower contours the canal quite well. I really didnt like the design at first, and was somewhat underwhelmed; however, as i see pictures in the latter phases of construction i think the glass looks a bit different. I wish there had been more emphasis on asthetics and a little less of a minimalist emphasis on the facade. None the less it is shaping up better than i had expected.

I know I know don't say anything unless you've got something nice to say...BUT, I can't help myself here.
What on Earth is going on with this interior design?
Firstly the kitchen. What's with the vertical AND the horizontal handles on cupboards? Basic rule in I.D...one way only.
Secondly, the bathroom. These enormous cylindrical handles straight out of a high school playground are everywhere because..?
Thirdly the vanity unit...come on, please tell me that the plumbing is somehow going to be covered up!
Now don't get me wrong because I absolutely LOVE the glass cladding used. It's stunning. It's just that if you're going to go to this much trouble and spend this much money...well...

to be honest I don't like the upper part of this building and the "spire" seems a simply pole.
Too many skyscrapers have now these kind of spires, very poor... only to increase vertical height: this is "piracy", and it should be better to count only the roof height to avoid nonsense like Petronas > Sears :ohno:

Well it Trump isn't exactly vying for "tallest buiding" status so I don't think its an issue. Also to appease such complaints separate heights for te spire for the roof are usually given. A spire should only become an issue if it does not visually complement the building's aesthetics. In Trump's case it does. Without the spires enhance buildings that have setbacks. Trump's roof does not terminate well at the top without the spire.

What on Earth is going on with this interior design?

Totally agree. These are three basic errors.

1. Consistency
2. Scale and balance
3. Aesthetics

They failed badly on all three.

Also the plain wall of the kitchen doesn't integrate well with the fittings.
The switches in the bathroom don't blend in and stand out like sore thumbs.
The lighting isn't exactly good either although not all the lights are switched on.
Back to the drawing board for this one.

Trump International Hotel & Tower opening delayed
Monday start dashed after officials say more work is needed to meet city's fire-safety codes

By Kathy Bergen

Trump International Hotel & Tower will not begin a phased opening on Monday, as planned, because work remains to be done to meet fire-safety codes, city officials said Friday.

Contractors need to complete the apron on the Wabash Avenue side of the riverfront building so fire trucks can get close enough to the building, said Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The developer also needs to complete installation of fire-safety elements for elevator operations, test the fire alarm system and file the project's emergency plan with the city, he said late Friday afternoon.

I was just thinking how amazing it will be in 5 years to stand in the middle of any of the bridges over the east/west branch of the river and do a 360 degree of the skyline: current buildings plus Trump, 300 Lasalle, Waterview, 200 N. Riverside, Mandarin Oriental, Waldorf-Astoria, Spire, and the LSE tower with the 20 story hole.... omigod... that will be the most amazing skyscraper view in the world

and let's not forget Wolf Point!!

Not exactly a new shot - but the light was unusual, and the neighbors always make it a good shot.

I don't think so, I think those are 'the things' (I can't find a proper English word for it right now) attached to the side. Right in there shouldn't even be columns anymore. I also see the concrete pump, but that's obvious.
