The light pylon looks new. Was it installed with the rest of the upgrade?
T.U.G.Z May 4th, 2009, 10:39 PM Hey just saw the highlights from the celtic game, and i must say the pitch is looking horrendous ( bordering on disastrous). Dont know if its poor maintenance, or that the grass hasn't grown properly, or just the poor quality of SABC, but its pretty bad.:ohno:
ChilenoFutbol May 4th, 2009, 11:31 PM thats not good

haggiesm May 14th, 2009, 09:34 AM well the cheetahs are playing their last super 14 game away so the grounds people should have plenty of time now to improve the pitch.

Why Flood?
Flood May 14th, 2009, 01:40 PM 'cause they LOVE mielies in the Free State. Everywhere you go, all you see is mielies. It wouldn't surprise me if they grow mielies at the Free State stadium during the off season ...

It is of the upgrade before the '95 world cup which consisted of well, the stadium as it is today . It was the extention of the main stand from small to the width of the field as well as the 3 remaining sides, upgraded from the old "peanut stands".
11 months, yes, you read correct and 24 million. Times have changed....

ZATUGA June 6th, 2009, 08:22 PM For, when it needs 1 year for the world cup to start, I'd like to make a video with some photos you guys have posted in this thread and in the others of the worldcup stadiums, to post in youtube.
I'd just like to know if you authorize me to do this. I'll mention at the end of the video that the copyright of these photos belong to the users that posted these in the skyscrapercity forum.

Jackes1754 June 15th, 2009, 09:43 AM That place is soooo flat.
As if Welkom is flooded with skyscrapers
I once saw a very pretty lady with a good anatomy here with a tshirt printed on the front " Not everything in the Free State is flat" :)
Anybody know what that surface on the pitch is posted by Mo on the previous page ? Something to help with the frost or what ?
mandana June 15th, 2009, 05:41 PM Why is SA so fond of segmented stadiums?
Would it have cost too much to throw down that "main" stand and finish the uninterrupted bowl of this stadium?
Don’t get me wrong the pics look great and this is a great stadium…. just my 2 cents
Andrew_za June 15th, 2009, 05:47 PM 4-3!!! stadium looked good
Inertia June 15th, 2009, 07:21 PM What an awesome game :D. Average looking stadium gotta admit
haggiesm June 16th, 2009, 01:05 AM ^^ i thought it looked great.

it looks very discontinuous from this angle, doesn't flow at all
Pule June 16th, 2009, 08:16 AM I like that stadium.
nelly_the_elephant June 16th, 2009, 09:20 AM I like it too. Fans are pretty close to the pitch, allways nice for the atmosphere.
rulani June 16th, 2009, 10:57 AM Me like it too!
Jackes1754 June 16th, 2009, 11:13 AM Yip, I've been at both Currie Cup finals here, I don't care how it looks for some, this stadium creats amazing atmosphere !!!
haggiesm June 16th, 2009, 12:05 PM no stadium that has been upgraded over a number of years is perfectly cohesive. nowhere in the world.
african biohazard June 16th, 2009, 03:40 PM Just went and got myself semi-final tickets ...hoping for a Spain vs. Italy/Brazil semi!
Inertia June 16th, 2009, 05:08 PM Ok, just my opinion. There was definitely no wow factor when I saw it on TV.
haggiesm June 16th, 2009, 05:53 PM it's one of the smaller venues for the WC. what wow factor were you looking for?
Jackes1754 June 16th, 2009, 05:57 PM it's one of the smaller venues for the WC. what wow factor were you looking for?
Sjeesh, exactly. And as you have already told them, it is also an old one of wich this is the fourth rebuilded/added on version. The stadium is exactly the same as previously apart from the main stand getting a second tier, so I also can't see how the second tier on the mainstand should make the wow. The wow factors you will get with the other new pieces of art stadiums. Old stadiums like bloem and pta and jhb is more that worthy when it comes to atmosphere. :bash:
Andrew_za June 16th, 2009, 07:45 PM I think that stadium is pretty good considering its one of the smaller venues.

Mo Rush June 18th, 2009, 01:30 PM The venue overlay has been ok but pretty average. Not surprise though.

Mo Rush June 19th, 2009, 03:53 PM ^^ what did you expect? it not much different from how it was at previous confed cups.
Probably but the finishing of the Germany venues in terms of overlay seems so much more "crisp" and "classy".
Juanl June 19th, 2009, 04:00 PM gonna have to agree with mo on this one. the application of the boards leaves something to be desired... seeing it in hd really shows all the flaws... wouldn't notice if you were't looking though. woulda also preferred different colours for different venue. red coulda been ellis park for sure... they coulda chosen them from the same palette as the logo. just boring branding to be honest like the did it cos they have to... and don't even get me started on the host city font...

then theres the area around the field, the security guards who are scatttered around the place.
haggiesm June 19th, 2009, 09:00 PM well, having recently watched some of the footage from germany 2006 i don't think our signage is that different, especially considering that this is only the confed cup. i know it's supposed to be a rehearsal, but that's exactly it. it's not a finished product...yet.

Pule June 22nd, 2009, 07:46 AM Out of all 4 stadiums of the Confederations Cup, me and my 4 friends whom I travelled with to all four stadiums came to a conclusion that this stadium is the best one we've eveer been.
Durbsboi June 22nd, 2009, 08:40 AM ^^Yah only coz your beloved Celtic call this place "home"

Flood June 25th, 2009, 08:12 AM Pitch looked a bit shoddy last night - apparently the Spanish team were complaining a bit (the ball tends to bobble instead of rolling smoothly). Otherwise the stadium looked really great.
What was the crowd like? AB?
haggiesm June 25th, 2009, 09:14 AM uhhh, USA played on the same pitch. does the pitch account for the shots they missed and the lack of space in midfield and the ramos' mistake in defense. seriously, they should have more class than that.

african biohazard June 27th, 2009, 09:12 PM Sorry for the late posting on my jaunt to watch the semi's in Bloemfontein. It was a lot of fun. The Bloem Celtic fans are awesome and they use the vuvuzela in a creative way, mixing song and dance with well-played sounds. I get the impression that a lot of the reason for the "noise" of this instrument is because of all the newbies playing alone and without cohesion. Anyway, the crowd was good but only about 3/4 full. Bitterly bitterly cold (see pic of my tent in the morning ...yes, had to stay in a campsite ....- 3 degrees). Bloemfntein park-and-walk is excellent and the city is well organised for this event. It seemed as if there were few local whiteys at the game (most were English-speaking from outside town). Then again, this is a rugby town. A big thumbs up for this city ..but needs to jack-up on accommodaton! Enjoy these pics.

african biohazard June 27th, 2009, 09:30 PM My girlfriend and I managed ok - we go hiking a lot. Decent down sleeping-bag and layers of clothing! Bloemfontein is a cold place in Winter - especially during a cold spell like this. Usually daytime temps are higher (15-20 C) but at night it cane go below zero like it did on the 24th June
Pule June 27th, 2009, 10:52 PM Damn AB, i just feel the cold by looking at your tent. The random blow of vuvuzelas as I have said before, and Im glad you emphasizing it, comes from those who went to the games the 1st or second time. During our game againts spain there were plenty of SA whiteys. Im impsressed with the support that whiteys gave Bafana Bafana. Bloem atmosphere is second to none in SA, Bloemfonteiners are the best.
african biohazard June 27th, 2009, 11:15 PM Pule - even though I was prepared, its still damn cold. Not sure I will do that again in a hurry. Andrew_za June 27th, 2009, 11:21 PM NO offense, but you guys should stop saying "whiteys", Its wrong, people could/would find it offensive.

Bloemfontein urged to reign in World Cup price inflation
Overnight establishments in Bloemfontein were on Tuesday urged not to charge over-inflated prices to visitors during the coming Fifa Soccer World Cup, a problem commonto all big sport events in the city.
"People are booking in Kimberley because of high prices," said George Mohlakoana, chief executive officer of the Mangaung local organising committee.
Mohlakoana said over-inflated prices by smaller establishments such as bed and breakfast type accommodations was one of the "problems" authorities had identified in the run up to the Fifa 2010 event.
He was speaking at a Free State tourism breakfast on the province's readiness for the Soccer World Cup, starting in June.
A spokesman for Free State Tourism, Khotso Thole, confirmed the practice of over-inflated accommodation prices and warned that the "quick buck" practice was hurting the Free State's tourism industry.
The meeting heard about accommodation quotes increasing from several hundred rand to R3000.
It was estimated that Bloemfontein officially had about 12,000 tourism beds and the surrounding areas such as Kimberley, Welkom and Lesotho another 13,000 beds.
Government authorities have launched a campaign inviting Bloemfontein and surrounding homeowners to open their homes to visiting soccer supporters, expecting another 2000 beds to become available.
Other problems experienced with accommodation establishments were that people changing to cheaper accommodation elsewhere were battling to get their money back, at times fully paid at the original service provider.
The situation, already experienced during the earlier Federation Cup Tournament last year, has in the meantime created headaches for tourism authorities in that soccer entertainment-related events needed to be established at all these "satellite" sites.
Mohlakoana said businesses should also review their business hours during the world cup.
"At 7pm, only restaurants are open at the malls in Bloemfontein, It's a problem for the world cup."
He also urged tourism operators to talk the same language as the national government on safety.
Mohlakoana said the national safety plan was sufficient and that it was one "area where we have no sleepless nights with".
Although Bloemfontein was one of the soccer world cup hosting cities, no teams participating had yet booked the city to be used as a training base camp.
The nearest is Uruguay, that would be in Kimberley.
"Not all was lost for the host city due to this," said Mohlakoana.
He said indications were that teams taking part in the Federation Cup tournament had felt the weather conditions in Bloemfontein was too cold for their preparations.
Earlier, Free State MEC for tourism Mxolisi Dukwana urged a more integrated way for tourism operators to work together in the Free State.
The province also launched a campaign to get all tourism operators to work in a coordinated way in getting as much as possible benefit for the province over the six weeks period of the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Pule February 10th, 2010, 11:19 AM Thanks Mo, I saw the progress of Intermodal transport on Woza 2010 and it seemed as if they were gonna finish in like 3 months but they said it won't be ready by the event.

This stadium should have been rebuilt like Orlando Stadium, when i was there early last year it was shakey when we stood up celebrating goals. I don't trust it's stands at all.
haggiesm February 10th, 2010, 02:41 PM it won't be hosting any fans so all they need to do is take care of the pitch. and besides, another big stadium in bloem would really be a waste.
Pule February 10th, 2010, 03:16 PM ^^ that's a home to Celtic and they rarely use Vodacom Park. 2010 has came and it will go but the stadium will remain forever for the pessionate soccer loving people of Bloemfontein.

Yeah I totally agree.Of all the teams in the psl that deserve a grand stadium its Celtic. The LOC should have used this opportunity to reward Siwelele for their unbelievable support.

Couldn't agree more, I think in one of the threads on this forum there was a list of average attendances per team for last season. Celtic had a higher average than the Cheetahs.
haggiesm February 11th, 2010, 07:55 AM true. the club has actually won a few awards for their fans' behaviour and enthusiasm.
crazydude February 11th, 2010, 08:28 AM true. the club has actually won a few awards for their fans' behaviour and enthusiasm.
I know, they're probably the best PSL fans in the country. What is the situation with the Free State stadium, does Bloemfontien city council own it, and if so how long if FSRU's lease on the place. I'd love to see a fair gorund share between the Cheetahs and Bloem Celtic. Celtic is getting too big for a 20 000 seater stadium.
Pule February 11th, 2010, 08:30 AM Celtic is getting too big for a 20 000 seater stadium.
true and I wonder if plans are in place to counter the situation.
haggiesm February 11th, 2010, 08:36 AM why exactly don't they use vodacom park?
crazydude February 11th, 2010, 08:40 AM why exactly don't they use vodacom park?
That's what I was asking about in my prevois post. I wanted to know how the deal with the stadiumworks, whether the city controls the stadium or FSRU.
rulani February 11th, 2010, 09:31 AM Celtic seems to enjoy more support at Seisa than at Vodacom Park. Seisa is right in the township where people can either walk or catch a local taxi.
Pule February 11th, 2010, 12:28 PM ^^ True Ruls.

world cup venues run on generators...why don't they use them now to test them?
crazydude February 12th, 2010, 08:23 PM My take on the lights: Lights went out, shit happens. What I care about, is why the lights didn't come 'all the way' back on. Watching on TV, it looked like a club game. :(
Inertia February 12th, 2010, 09:06 PM Looks like the renders. Cool.
Lutzno February 12th, 2010, 09:23 PM are they keeping the white/off white/grey/light blue/blue/random mix of seats. i remember they replaced a small portion of one of the corners with dark blue seats, are they not going through with it?

haggiesm February 15th, 2010, 10:00 AM did the lights fail or was it a power shortage? didn't see the game, but in those pics the score is on and the suite lights too so there must have been power.

haggiesm March 8th, 2010, 07:24 AM looking at those spaces between the main stand and the rest of the stadium, it might have been a good idea to fill those with office blocks english style. would have looked a bit better and offered extra opportunities for income. all the other stadiums focus on corporate functions etc for their long term operation. aw well.

love the singing here instead of that wacky vuvu
haggiesm June 2nd, 2010, 06:39 PM they played that over the pa. people rarely just start singing it anymore. i agree, it's awesome when the whole stadium sings it. when we went to the games at loftus, they only played it very briefly before the game and then never again. pitty. they should do it more often, like in 95.

crazydude March 5th, 2011, 07:38 AM The Free State government wants the naming rights to the Free State Stadium, premier Ace Magashule said today.
“The Free State government intends to purchase the naming rights of the Free State Stadium from the Free State Rugby Union,” he said in his state of the province address.
The government had already started talks with the rugby union and was expected to finalise its commitment in the near future.
Magashule said this would include financially supporting the Cheetahs and the Griffons rugby teams.
The premier said the provincial government would also provide further support to the region’s football teams Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars.
“If we do not support them who will?” he asked.
Not only did the sporting codes attract people to the Free State when they played locally, but the province’s sports stars had a lot to plough back into the province, said Magashule.
“They are role models which can keep children from the streets.”
Magashule said Free State sport minister Dan Kgothule would announce more details on the provincial government’s contributions.
