Is there a 'typical condo' style in Toronto? With hundreds of projects going up in the past few years there are condos of all shapes and sizes..
Chi649 May 1st, 2007, 04:55 AM I like the design of these. It's too bad that they are not taller and twin towers, that would have really been cool. But this is still a nice project. I was in TO in 2005 and I can say there were some condo towers there.
MattyG July 9th, 2007, 01:17 AM would anyone happen to have a pic of what the new towers will look like against the rest of the skyline?
Alweron July 9th, 2007, 08:42 AM What a massive twin tower complex. Nice :) Toronto is getting new highrises all the time.

isaidso October 2nd, 2007, 01:59 PM This is a MASSIVE complex! Thank God for a mall south of Union.. It will do wonders for the area.
As long as the street resembles a high street, a mall won't destroy the area. The main entrances to stores must be from the street, not inside the building otherwise it will end up being a blank wall of nothing like the west side of Yonge Street where the Eaton Centre is. Opposite the Eaton Centre on the east side of Yonge is a thousand times more fabulous to walk along. This is the core, not Mississauga. We want urbanity, not underwhelming suburban crap here. God forbid we end up with a sidewalk like that one in front of the Bay store at Yonge and Bloor. What a disaster!
Canadian74 October 18th, 2007, 05:24 AM Nice project!

It's a condo called The Esplanade (I believe), it was built in the late 80's early 90's.
isaidso March 17th, 2008, 08:08 PM When was Flatrion built btw?? Pretty obvious it's not an original hey?
That triangular shaped condo isn't the flatiron building. The condo was built in 1988 http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=35streetesplanade-toronto-canada , while the flatiron building a few blocks north of the condo was built in 1892. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=gooderhambuilding-toronto-canada It pre-dates New York's version of Toronto's flatiron building by 10 years.
The condo, 25 The Esplanade, is a very nice addition to the downtown core. It's not very tall, but distinctive and very appealing at street level.

the only thing I would do here, is demolish that exit ramp from gardiner expressway - the exit should end at york st - the ramp leading to bay st could be demolished and that green area at york/harbor/queens quay could be turned into a nice park. I would also plant more trees in the area... hope the parking lots disappear soon too ...
UD2 May 15th, 2008, 06:26 AM the 212 meter tower shouldn't be built. It blocks.

Blocks what? This is downtown. Views are already blocked.
As for the park under the ramp, IMO the ramp makes that park. Removing it would just take away from the park. Its cool walking under the ramp and hearing the cars above. The trail actually follows the ramp so its not like there is wasted space.
HD May 15th, 2008, 11:38 AM and that green area already is a park.
under a highway ramp, thank you very much ...
isaidso May 15th, 2008, 01:40 PM Put some grass down and it qualifies as a park? What passes for a park for some people is astounding. I suppose the 2 large trees on that grass is a forest wilderness area. Hey honey, wanna go for a picnic at the Gardiner Expressway off ramp park? We could go for a stroll in that forest afterwards.
The Gardiner is a tragedy for Toronto no matter how much anyone tries to sugar coat it. Band-aid solutions will do little to repair the devastation this freeway has wrought on the city. It's been an utter disaster and urban horror show all so that suburban people can drive quicker into the city. Why do they get a say in this at all? That's like building a freeway over their house so I can get to the other side quicker. The degree of arrogance and selfishness at play is unbelievable.
They can't blow the Gardiner Expresway up quick enough. Those highway commuters? Who cares! Transit, bike, rollerblade, walk, or take city streets like the rest of us. Too far? That's their problem. Hopefully, the development of this area will be the impetus to finally take this outrageous assault on our city down immediately.

It already has gass, some trees and a walkpath running throught the middle of it. Whatever you call it, it is a natural recreational space in the middle of highrise buildings. it's a park.
UD2 June 13th, 2008, 05:06 AM Which 212 meter tower?

Yeah, right!
Are you just trying to be as absurd as possible? Next you'll be telling us that the Gardiner Expressway is a nice urban street to hang out on. Grass doesn't make something a park. This patch of nothing doesn't even qualify as a parkette. It's highway landscaping.

isaidso July 7th, 2008, 10:58 AM Yes, they are condo towers. There's actually a new development along the waterfront called City Place that looks even more like Vancouver. It's been built by the same Vancouver firm that built much of the condo towers in that city, so it's no accident that there are similarities.
City Place is a massive development of 20 towers all going up one after the other. It's presently about half finished.

cruzin4u July 24th, 2008, 02:06 AM MLS is a massive site! I can't wait to see some cladding and watch it grow and grow.
I remember the days when people were saying how slow Telus is rising. Look at it now, it's really pushing along nicely!
yin_yang July 24th, 2008, 04:19 AM Telus is flying now, indeed...it was slow the from the basement through to the lobby, now they are pouring them like pros.
montesky July 24th, 2008, 01:13 PM imo its a bit too simple
isaidso August 7th, 2008, 09:22 AM ^^ I agree, but the nature of the building will probably give it a level of glitz. It's billed as Canada's first sports condo complex. They'll be quite a bit of show biz design elements incorporated into the podium.
It's going to be a hopping place with Skydome at one end, the ACC at the other, and a canyon of towers in between. I have a feeling that it's going to become a sports fan's gathering spot anytime some big game is on whether it is in Toronto, or not.
Think 200,000 people crammed on to this street!
TohrAlkimista August 7th, 2008, 04:13 PM Oh God, Toronto changed so much since I have been there. In front of the AC Center there was...nothing! Great upgrade for this area!

This is going to be a very exciting place to be...
isaidso November 7th, 2008, 06:13 AM It sure is. I hope the facade where 'Maple Leaf Square' is written features patterned glass. A lot of high end retailers like Harvey Nichols and Louis Vuitton use it on there stores to great effect. I also hope that the billboard is, in fact, a video screen.
Can you imagine people watching a sold out playoff game in front of that? It would be terrific.

isaidso February 1st, 2009, 01:28 PM Is this project affiliated with the Maple Leaf Garden?
Maple Leaf Gardens was the former home of the Maple Leafs hockey team. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the owner, moved the team to the Air Canada Centre. Maple Leaf Square is their new sports themed retail and condo project across the street from the Air Canada Centre.
As you can see, Maple Leaf Gardens and Maple Leaf Square are both related, but only through connection to that hockey team. Maple Leaf Gardens is a good 20 city blocks north of this.

It is quite a sight. As soon as we get a nice 10C day, I'm blading down there to poke around. I love this photo below. You really feel like you're in a big exciting city. I have a feeling that this will turn into my new favourite urban spot after Dundas Square. It's going to be very intense down here. I heard the name 'Union Square' bandied about last year. It's a good name for the area considering the new entrance to Union Station.

I'm hoping they'll turn both Dundas Square and this area into a giant gathering place for Torontonians to celebrate and watch the Vancouver Olympics. Both have giant video screens. It would be awesome watching sports from the sidewalk with 10,000 of your closest friends! This area won't be finished in time though, will it? Real Sports Bar and Grill (http://www.realsports.ca/bargrill.html), immediately off the corridor from the festivities, was the scene for a party following the ceremony. The venue was recently crowned by ESPN Mobile to be the best sports bar in North America.

The party was also a chance to officially inaugurate Maple Leaf Square's public art components. Members of United Visual Artists (http://www.uva.co.uk/), an art and design practice based in London, England, were on hand with representatives of Soheil Mosun Ltd. (http://mosun.com/), fabricators of the artworks.

The first of the two UVA works to be installed was Connection, a responsive light installation which consists of an array of vertical LED strips which oscillate with colour and geometry when people cross the bridge.

The second piece, recently completed, is Canopy, a 90-metre long light sculpture spanning the York Street front of the complex. Canopy is inspired by the dappled light that filters through leaves in a forest. Its thousands of modules alternately allow natural light to pass through in the day, while lighted modules glimmer on and off in as sunlight were passing through leaves fluttering in the wind.

Seen in the first of the three photos above, e11even restaurant (http://www.e11even.ca/) will open on November 11th at the corner of Bremner and York. In the summer the restaurant will have patio seating under Canopy. Other components of maple Leaf Square still to open include a TD-Canada Trust branch at York and Lake Shore, plus the 167-room LeGermain hotel. (http://www.germainmapleleafsquare.com/) CI Financial (http://www.ci.com/) have leased all 230,000 square feet of office space in the complex, and will be moving in over the next few months.

The other major opening of the day was the Longo's supermarket (http://www.longos.com/)on the basement level of the complex. The 48,000 square foot store is the largest supermarket in the area, is beautiful and sophisticated.

Some new concepts are being tried out at the store. Surrounding a seating area in the store you will find a Starbucks (so far, so ubiquitous), as well as "Corks" and "Aisle 43".

Corks is a beer and wine bar serving Ontario-made craft beers and wines. Besides the taps, the specialized equipment here includes 2 Enomatic (http://www.enomatic.it/) wine preservers: the machines stop the oxidization of wine after the cork has been popped, keeping over a dozen bottles fresh and available for tasting.

Aisle 43, named for the 43rd parallel that Niagara shares with Bordeaux, is a next generation wine boutique selling Hillebrand and Peller Estates wines. Design-wise, Aisle 43 may be the first wine store to drop grape imagery for the fruits whose flavours are often suggested in wine.

Aisle 43 also features an Enomatic, and a barcode scanner connected to a database that is ready to help you with wine-food pairings.

That's the story: time to return to the surface.

Eric Offereins February 21st, 2011, 11:56 PM A real good project. It will add not just density to the skyline, but with all the shops, people will be visiting it and the street will become more alive.
I wish we had more similar projects in my city. :)
