As much as has been completed in terms of construction, this university (which is basically a town) will see some significant growth over the next 5 years. It'll be bigger. In fact, construction on existing infrastructure is still taking place. A lot of tree-planting still going on.

Can any person tell me what is that ( nice design building ) in the
2nd and 3rd Pictures !!!!!!!!

It's a series of buildings of the same design style that are connected together. They house the administrative offices for the university, a museum about Muslims' and Islam's contributions to science, seminar halls, some (maybe all?) academic departments, and cafes. Speaking of Muslims in scientific history, it's nice that the academic departments/buildings are named after prominent Muslim scientists. Al-Kindi, Ibn Sina, Al-Khawarizmi, etc..

It's not a heavily populated, yet. A manager of one of the departments there told me there are around 2,500 inhabitants. They expect to expand, though.

It's interesting that KAUST offers education from K to 12 and offers master's and PhD degrees (the university itself is only graduate-level. K-12 schools aren't directly part of the campus.). The only thing missing in the educational process for somebody who wants to live there is an undergraduate program.

Sadly, security is a bitch. It's easier to gain access to a US military base in the US, as a Saudi citizen, than it is to gain access to the interior areas of this university. To me, knowledge shouldn't be constrained like this. It should be freely accessible and free-flowing.

It feels like Westerners and East Asians are brought here to help our country diversify economically through technological innovation and commercialization. It doesn't feel like it was built to be run by Saudis for Saudis. It's run by non-Saudis for Saudis.

+1 (Bolded part)

I have a lot of colleagues though (from all over the country) who are basically being recruited for this university. They're already granted a graduate program for their respective majors and the university is supersiving their current undergraduate degrees which they're attaining in the US. So, it's a possibilty that the situation is just the first phase of what will be a university for Saudis and run by Saudis.

A blog by a former student...

http://schoolofsand.blogspot.com/

The education and academic atmosphere are top notch. That doesn't mean there aren't faults. It was such an ambitious project... trying to do SO much SO quickly. The structures are getting better, though, even if it is after repairs.

After the last rain event, many buildings still had leaks.

It's a great place, nonetheless, and it'll reap great benefits for our country.

The Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) at Trinity College, Dublin (TCD) will collaborate with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia on solar energy production in a $1.36million project.

KAUST and CRANN are exploring how to efficiently harvest these enormous amounts of energy in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner.

The KAUST-sponsored project will involve two senior researchers and three PhD students, both at KAUST and TCD, and it will make use of the computational power of the KAUST supercomputer Sasheen.

The joint project aims at understanding the fundamental limitations of solar energy conversion, paving the way for a new generation of photovoltaic devices, more efficient and cheaper than those currently available.

“We are very excited about the collaboration between KAUST and CRANN. The work that is being done has huge potential benefits in addressing the challenge facing the world to find renewable and green sources of energy,” said CRANN director Professor John Boland.

Ambassador Abdulaziz Aldriss, ambassador of Saudi Arabia, said “the collaboration between KAUST and CRANN is a further testament of the established and strengthened links between universities and research institutes in Saudi Arabia and Ireland.”

JEDDAH: Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) signed four agreements with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) at the university campus in Thuwal on Saturday.

The deals cover the development and localization of technology in Saudi Arabia.

They aim to advance SABIC’s innovation strategies and boost the comprehensive cooperation program sponsored by KAUST.

SABIC Vice-Chairman and CEO Mohamed Al-Mady, a delegation from SABIC’s management and KAUST senior management were present at the signing ceremony.

Abdulrahman S. Al-Ubaid, executive vice-president, Technology and Innovation (T&I), signed the deals on behalf of SABIC and Professor Stefan Catsicas, KAUST Provost and Mohamed Samaha, senior vice-president for Economic and Technology Development, signed for KAUST.

Al-Mady said the new initiative would harness a range of key partners that have the productive and creative capacities to establish the Kingdom as a world-class center for science and technology.

“Alongside a significant upgrade in our domestic research capacity, we hope to champion a scientific and technological culture throughout the Kingdom that delivers a range of job opportunities for generations to come,” he added.

Al-Ubaid said the first agreement is for the construction of a SABIC Research and Innovation Center at KAUST, at a cost of $150 million, as the first stage.

The second and third agreements are for SABIC’s direct support of KAUST.

The second agreement concerns the financing of a Polymer Catalysis Research Chair for five years to be disbursed at the rate of $1 million per year, with a cumulative total of $5 million.

The third deal supports postdoctoral fellowships, through which SABIC will support the work of 10 to 15 researchers in areas that are related to SABIC’s business.

The fourth agreement organizes the joint research work between the two sides and intellectual property rights.

KAUST President Choon Fong Shih said the deals would help both organizations fulfill “our missions of harnessing science and technology for the benefit to the people of Saudi Arabia and beyond.”

He hoped that KAUST’s talented students and outstanding faculty would play a key role in SABIC’s efforts to generate scientific and technological innovations for the Saudi Arabian economy.

HOK's library for KAUST breaks ground for sustainable technologies in Saudi Arabia

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a new international graduate-level research university located in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, opened in September 2009 as a living laboratory for scientists pursuing groundbreaking sustainable technologies.

The academic library is situated at the physical and symbolic heart of the new university. The building opens to the campus' main circulation spine on one end and to the Red Sea on the other, relating the campus to the surrounding landscape. It is covered with a hyper-diagrid curtain wall system that diffuses the sunlight. The building's skylightsare shaded by perforated panels, creating intricate patterns of dappled light reminiscent of the traditional Middle Eastern mashrabiya screens.

The interior of the library has expansive volumes of space for its study areas and seminar rooms, anchored by a wood corewhich gradually steps down toward the sea, linking the plaza level with the topography of the site. This creates an inviting space where scientists come together and share ideas in a dramatic, yet comfortable setting. The warm environment serves to balance the more technical nature of the surrounding engineering and laboratory buildings.

In the Islamic tradition, the library serves as a 'House of Knowledge', bringing people together both socially and academically. KAUST is the first university in the Saudi Kingdom where women and men can mix and study freely together, and the library functionsas a gathering point at the centre of community life. The exterior of the building is covered in stone tiles that are visually solid during the day. In the evening, with campus activity at its peak, light radiates through the translucent stone and reveals the building's interior through the play of shadow. The library becomes a lanternon the campus, illuminating the central quad and radiating light across the sea. The library, along with the entire university campus, achieved LEED Platinum certification.

An overview of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology's (KAUST) progress since its inception 19 months ago was provided by its top researchers at a session on the sidelines of the ongoing 11th Jeddah Economic Forum on Monday.

Within a short span, KAUST has to its credit a number of exclusive researches, with efforts continuing to make them beneficial to Saudi Arabia's commercial ventures. "KAUST is not a castle, but an open university. Although our research studies are of international level, we'll endeavor to make them useful to the local business community, including small and medium enterprises," Professor Jean Marie Basset, director of Catalysis Research Center at KAUST, said.

Terrence McElwee, director of technology transfer and innovation, and Amin Shibani, vice president of economic development, both at KAUST, also gave presentations at the session conducted by Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Vice Chairman Lama A. Al-Sulaiman.

Asked by a questioner how beneficial is KAUST to the student community in general, Shibani said KAUST is currently planning a summer program for students, both Saudi and expatriate. "This is aimed at bringing students closer to the activities of KAUST," Shibani said, adding: "We are going ahead with our targeted audience in the initial stages."

Al-Sulaiman emphasized that the JCCI, in the interest of its members, is interested in getting the advantage of KAUST, which is shaping into a world-class research center with its slogan "A new house of wisdom" and located just about 90 km from Jeddah. "Since its mission is to contribute to knowledge economy, we would like to be in touch with KAUST through its user network so that our members benefit from its research activities," she added.

In this connection, McElwee said MENA400.com could be of immense advantage to the business community. Explaining, he added, MENA400 is a new way to approach technology-based economic development that focuses on what individuals can do now. It helps with new business ideas, new ways to obtain key technologies not currently available in the region, new business models customized for the region or a country, new user networks around topics like venture capital or patent licensing, new online tools and resources to extend the power of the network, and partnerships between researchers and companies who need R&D solutions. After all, a little inspiration goes a long way. "We are here to help companies build them their own designs and networks; we don't make designs and networks for them, he said. "KAUST aims at becoming a leading model; transfer of our researches from the lab to the marketplace is the challenge," he added.

A questioner provided an interesting point of discussion when he said Jeddah was producing a huge amount of volcanic ash through the business of recycling of automobile tires. "It's emitting a huge amount of black carbon (to the detriment of the environment), he said and wanted to know how KAUST could help him. "Used tires found around the city are a huge problem," he said.

Beautiful pictures, jh1! I especially liked those of the town and student centers. :)

On another note, seems like I was right in assuming that the university and its town would constitute an independent and reclusive community, much like Aramco's settlements. What a shame.

Research centres are the hearts of new economies. The design of these centres will establish development patterns for future districts and cities throughout the world. By understanding context and the nature of research development, the plan for the Science Town at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) provides insight into the transformative potential of this development type. KAUST is an international, graduate-level university dedicated to scientific achievement and collaborative research.

Within KAUST’s academic community, 320 hectares (790 acres) of strategic land was reserved for a knowledge-based business district: a research park. The traditional - insular, remote and single use - research park model is too diluted to serve as a hub for robust international research. The KAUST Science Town Master Plan transforms the research park typology into a sustainable community around challenging research building programs in a harsh, arid landscape. This master plan creates a research center that integrates science, business and academics into an integrated district with residential lifestyles and amenities.
The plan directs the physical manifestation of a complete city growing from desert, including all construction and urban systems. Among these recommendations are five principle elements that serve as a framework for all other recommendations: a gridded street pattern, intra-block connectivity, a shaded pedestrian spine, linked open space and mixed-use development program distributed throughout the site. Recommendations of the Science Town Master Plan are scalable. The community is physically designed for adaptability and incremental growth. With this integrated phasing strategy, the town is tailored to the present and standardised for the future. The design of tomorrow’s research centre is a task of community formation not building organisation.

Saudi's KAUST signs deal for solar technology licence

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/incoming/article381476.ece/BINARY/mw-solar-farm.jpg

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has inked a licence agreement with the University of Toronto for rights to a new solar power technology.

Developed by Dr Edward Sargent, Canada research chair in nanotechnology at the University of Toronto, the quantum dot solar cell technology uses quantum dots to convert the sun's power efficiently into electrical energy.

Dr Sargent's work has been funded by KAUST since 2008 as part of its global collaborative research programme, according to a report published by state news agency SPA.

KAUST said the technology has made great strides towards the goal of breaking the present-day constraining paradigm between high efficiency and low cost in solar cells.

"This agreement demonstrates a new way for research universities in developing countries to help transform local and regional economies by licensing-in intellectual property rights for the benefit of industry, especially new companies," said Terence McElwee, KAUST director of technology transfer & innovation.

The exclusive licence covers 38 countries in the Middle East, Western Asia, Russia and India - a rapidly growing market of more than two billion people.
While the technology is still in its early stages, KAUST views Sargent team's work as a potential game-changer in solar energy.

By securing early rights, KAUST said it is investing long term in Saudi Arabia's commitment to shift from an oil-based to a sustainable energy economy.

The agreement is expected to be the first of many by KAUST to help become a premier global technology broker and help develop Saudi Arabia as a regional hub of technology-based economic development.

Inaugurated in 2009, KAUST¹s economic development vision is to become the leading model of technology based development in the kingdom and to catalyse transformation of the kingdom's economy.
