Colombo's very beautiful, but the banners're not.

But I think it would be better if we can have a skyline of Colombo with the WTC/BoC towers and the beach perhaps. Something that shows more class. Why not try something like that ?

This was the one I went with. :) I filtered the banner by what was said in the thread, and some of the banner had to be taken out either because it was not urban or had text on it. I still have not gotten a response from Jan.

let me revive this, banner call for Feb 4th. If you have any banners please submit them. I will put up all the banners that are 'law abiding' ( ie. right size, no words in the banner, theme is about urbanity so no landscape, tourism type banners pls ) up for poll and we can collectively chose the best. I like the first combination of pictures and the background, however, the middle picture appears too stretched. If you can fix that, I would recommend the first banner cos of the mix of the different scenes of Sri Lanka shown i.e. City, beaches and mountains. Good job PCK.

PCK very nice try indeed.. but can I give a suggestion.. try make it as urban as possible. SSC is more about urbanity and architecture and the Admins prefer a banner that is akin to that theme.

ps. and please note, if anyone out there designing a new banner.. no texts allowed.

the only thing I can think of is to move the second pic up a bit.. so all the pics have a similar horizon.. apart from that I think your banner looks great :)

This is not about negative portrayal of the country, but more about sharing a moment to include the people who live in these 'cities' while we showcase the other 'regular' cities on a day to day basis in this forum, so an emotional banner.

ok this is how i see it...its just my personal opinion and nothing else.

For a vibrant democracy there is a need for critical media/opinions, which basically means we need mediums that analysis and criticise things like govt policy, spending etc. unfortunately in our democracy we only get the mushy mushy stuff,in other words we hear only the good side of everything and that is very very dangerous! as a student whose studying media and politics i can tell you that critical media is not even an option..it has to exist otherwise democracy does not work!, that said, the banner shows the bad side of our country, i do admit that this may not be the best forum to put that up on but however we cannot oppose this because unfortunately it is reality and we cannot go on thinking that everything that is happening is good!! i am not being political, in fact i am not personally into politics myself! you may agree or disagree on this and you have that right....

Wouldn't it be wise to show the contrast in our country, to show the world what immense division and inequality exists in Sri Lanka and every LEDC for that matter...for example the picture of the IDP camp and next to it a cool skyline pic of Colombo or a selected area of Colombo, like Kollupitiya or Fort or even Slave Island...this would be true side of our country...we can not be too idealistic nor can we be overly pessimistic, hence I believe that this is the middle way and as a result of these factors, a true testimony of our country...is it not true that there is notable prosperity in our country, even though you find dire poverty and violence...what do you think???

thanks for the effort everyone and some of the banners do look good. But I got some bad news.

The Admis is not keen on non-urban symbols. So no peace symbol, flowers, people flags etc I already submit the banner and it was suggested that I edit it if it is to be displayed :(

I can understand as this is a urban architectural forum only.

I myself am without my home computer so cant edit my pic.. we might have to wait.. or someone please cerate a new simple banner that is about urbanity.. no symbols, words, people etc.

I will ask the Admin to add the words 'Sri Lanka End of War 1983-2009' to show why the banner is displayed. Unfortunately thats the best that can be done.
