View Full Version : #016 l Tuntex Sky Tower l KAOHSIUNG l 348m l 85fl
D-Mac October 2nd, 2002, 06:01 AM Tuntex Sky Tower
Kaohsiung, Taiwan
HEIGHT: 348m/1240 feet
FLOORS: 85 floors
COMPLETION: 1997
ARCHITECT: C.Y. Lee & Partners
From the moment of its inception, the 85-floor T&C Tower was to be a Taiwanese landmark with a strong traditional Chinese flavor.
The base of this high-rise is raised higher than other similar buildings to make way for a tunnel underneath. This architecture considers the weather, typography and aesthetics, in addition to meeting the ancient Chinese principles of geometry.
Internally the building is constructed around 8 different cores; this allows easy access to and through the building's accommodation, including lounges, shipping areas and office space. Each of these areas is also independent, each with their own gateway extending towards the sky lobby. The building gains its basic structure vertically from the 8 elevator shafts and horizontally from the mechanical floor. The overall spatial structure is created by piling a pagoda-style tower atop 2 lofty podiums. The core of the 3 units is designed as a high atrium, which facilitates sunlight illumination, creates a vivid space, and allows separate office units to communicate with one another. Moreover, by reducing the wind pressure, this massive void in the centre also serves a crucial structural function.

Jasonhouse October 2nd, 2002, 06:07 AM It might be a somwhat origional design, but I just can't stand this monstrosity personally.
6.5/10 only because I kind of like the subdued tones used for the facade.
DrumCorpsAlum October 7th, 2002, 05:43 AM Very creative, but somewhat truncated. Not about height, but just looks like something is missing. 8/10.
RafflesCity October 9th, 2002, 08:13 PM 7/10
Like some horror scene, u can't take your eyes off it. Its colour and location make it all the more bulky and over-imposing. But I really do wanna visit it someday just to gawk at it.
Its shape is based on the Chinese character gao/kao, which means TALL.
Ersh October 9th, 2002, 10:08 PM 8.5/10
SteelCity32 October 9th, 2002, 10:35 PM no comment. 10/10
Patrick October 9th, 2002, 11:50 PM 2/10
Muse October 9th, 2002, 11:53 PM Got to admire this one just for its theatrics. One of those rarities that usually pulls some kind of reaction; whether positive, negative or a combo.
Depending on the pic, it seems to have a different character and its ediface changes tones obviously so. It will probably age very well, whereas some of its shinier siblings won't (perhaps 'cos it is already difficult on sight to know when it was completed).
Form based on the Chinese character for "tall", "high".

I'm sorry to say this but I think it is ugly. It looks like a black altar table
Caledon1981 October 10th, 2002, 08:49 AM looks like a giant "Transformer" about to take over Taiwan . . *more than meets the eye* 5/10
AG October 10th, 2002, 11:05 AM Too big for Kaohsiung, but unique, especially how the centre part of the building stands up without anything directly below it.
6/10
Sunflower October 10th, 2002, 10:25 PM Original and interesting but a bit bulky.
8/10

kiku99 October 14th, 2002, 07:37 AM sorry, but i don't really like this building personally...

yea it is kinda intimidating because its just so massive... but I dont think the design is as bad as people say it is..... they probably dont like its first impression because they're used to western designs of buildings.... i think its a creative design. but it stilll looks scary.. like one of those buildings you see in gotham city n batman
8.5/10
Monkey October 16th, 2002, 03:52 AM Thanks, Raffles and museumb -
That "tall" symbol explains some things :). Repeating that unfortunate cookiecutter shape halfway up and at the roofline (as it were) doesn't make the building any prettier. The dome is an afterthought, and the gizmo on top but a sorry excuse of a failed attempt to finish something off, it doesn't relate.
A mere 4.0
stanford October 19th, 2002, 11:13 PM This tower is not well known at all, when I went to Kaoshiung, I asked for directions and not even the people who lived in the city noticed it was there until I pointed it out to them. :D
Well, the view is great, I stayed on the 53rd floor, I have to find my pictures of it, somewhere... I'm sure. The design is awkward but the size is huge, not only upwards, but at the bottom of the tower too, it's over 150m!
RafflesCity October 19th, 2002, 11:26 PM Wow..you've been inside this one Stanford?
How does one move from the 2 legs into the top portion?
And whats at the top of the building?

Subdude October 20th, 2002, 03:11 AM 4/10. The huge aperture in the lower middle is pretty disorienting. It looks like the central tower is threatening to slide down like a guillotine. I'll give 'em a point for funky colors though
stanford October 21st, 2002, 02:57 AM There are only 3 elevators that go completely to the top of the tower. They are the world's 3rd fastest elevators. They travel at 600 m/sec. The cool thing is that when you go up, the lights dim and a night time glowing scene appears on the top of the elevator and there is a meter that shows the speed of the elevator. They are express elevators travelling from the 1st floor to the 75th 77th and another floor (I believe 78th), can't recall. 75th is the observation deck and 77th is a café. 78th floor is the world's tallest nightclub.
Floor Division (Sorry if this is not so accurate, I am trying to remember)-
1-7 - Chientai Department Store
8-31 - Office Towers
32-38- Private Appartments
39-70- Grand Formosa Hotel (I stayed on the 53rd floor)
71-74- Restaurants
75- Observation
76-77 - Restaurants
78- Club
79-85- Mechanical
The office towers overlap to where they connect to the hotel on the top floors, so that's how the elevators connect, aside from the 3 that go to the top, there are 4 more that go to the 39th floor, which is the hotel lobby. Then there are much more that connect to the hotel floors. What is kind of weird is that you cannot get to floors above 70 from any of the hotel floors, you must travel back to the building lobby and transfer to one of the express elevators. I am still trying to find those pictures. Not many people know this, but there is a (around, sorry that I cannot remember) 29 story atrium between in the extending up the center of the hotel from like the 41st floor the the 70th floor.
I was there just in time, they had changed the name of the hotel so I got a discount on my hotel room. It was only about U.S. 70 for a really really large room, 5 stars. I had a great view of Kaoshiung harbor and the city. My room was facing the Grand 50 tower, or the Chang-gu WTC.
Procurator October 21st, 2002, 07:46 AM Ugly top, ugly color scheme, ugly two legs. 3.5
Steven November 10th, 2002, 06:32 AM I sure does dominate the skyline.
7.5/10
Liz L November 15th, 2002, 08:07 AM 4/10 - The two "legs" with the top part of the tower between them simply don't work at all - they give it a threatening, overbearing appearance more suited to some fantasy/sci-fi movie villian's headquarters (if that had been its stated purpose, I'd have given it 9/10) - and the totally black facade makes it even worse! The crown isn't that hot, either.
Notice how perfectly ominous this thing looks in that one picture where the facade is catching the last rays of light from the setting sun? Almost seems like that plane should really be a sinister looking, Darth-Vader type fighter or a dragon or something....
There are a few good touches, though - I kind of like the sculpted cornices (is that the right word here?) myself

I visited last summer, so here are a few minor corrections:
71-74F - Mechanical
75F - Observation
76F - Nightclub
77-79F - Restaurants & Entertainment Facilities
80-85F - Supposedly Mechanical
3 express elevators: 73F, 75F, 77F
There are 20+ story atriums in both office towers ("legs") and the hotel's center (45-70F).
I've never stayed there overnight, so I must say you're very lucky.
Oh, and the comment you made about going back down to the lobby and transferring is absolutely correct. That is truly the worst design ever; I don't know why anyone would want to design something so tedious. But hey, there's an emergency stair case, as well as a staff-only work elevator (I don't know where it is) that stops on all floors from 1-79. There are also great views on Level 70 right where you exit the elevators; I took photos there and forgot about the observation deck.
But there is something odd about the upper 6 floors - no elevators can be found anywhere on them. I have a diagram showing the entire transport system and is very accurate as I checked upon my visit - it includes all staff-only elevators as well. I remember asking a security guard what was on the top 6 floors and he said that it was a secret. Interesting...
stanford November 16th, 2002, 11:56 PM secret.... cool. I do wonder what is up there. That was the first skyscraper I had been in for a while. I remember feeling awkward about my ear's popping. The elevator to the observation deck is the absolute coolest. The lady operating the elevator reminded everyone to swallow their spit.....:)
Jeff from Winnipeg November 18th, 2002, 07:22 AM It's got height and I have an inclination to black buildings... that's it though ->6/10

giallo November 19th, 2002, 10:40 AM I went up to the top of this building just last week. I never liked it. Seeing it in person gave me a totally different opinion. This is one kick ass building. Beautifully designed. It's one of those skyscrapers that you must see in person. They information counter said it was the 11th tallest???!?!? 9.0
giallo November 19th, 2002, 10:47 AM Ha. We had no one that worked there in the elevator with us. My ears haven't had that sort of workout since diving 25 feet deep under water. One of the best views of any city. It only cost us $6.00 american to ride up. You get a voucher for 100nt ( about 3 bucks) off any drink or food order. A great deal. I will go back for another visit as should any skyscraper fan.
Fallout November 19th, 2002, 02:28 PM looks like a giant "Transformer" about to take over Taiwan . . *more than meets the eye* 5/10
It's so .. Asian.
6.5 as I'm from Europe:)
stanford November 19th, 2002, 11:10 PM giallo, you live in Taiwan?
Also, for anyone who goes to the observation deck, look on the floor for my contact! I lost it up there, my eye felt uncomfortable so I rubbed it and my contact disappeared, actually contactS, I lost both!!! Luckily I had my glasses with me.
giallo November 22nd, 2002, 03:59 PM Yes, I live in Taiwan. I'm about 30 minutes north of Koahsuing in a city called Tainan. I moved here a month ago from Vancouver. I'm loving every minute of it. TFC is the next building on my list. How about you? Do you live in Taiwan?

Sunflower November 22nd, 2002, 10:22 PM What does the 29 story atrium look like?
stanford November 23rd, 2002, 10:43 PM The Atruim is nothing special, the one i saw was in the top section of the tower, there is another one in the office towers, but the atrium is not a work of art like burj-al-arab or something, but it is impressive.
Giallo, I live in Boston but I have relatives and friends in Taiwan, so I visit every year or 2.

Wait until you take the TFC's 1000m/min elevators...
The atrium is nothing special - the hotel one is square-shaped and the offices, roundish. There are no details or fancy designs, so it's not like you're missing anything special.
Eddy November 26th, 2002, 03:27 PM I hate the design...4/10 :(
CG5 November 27th, 2002, 05:36 AM I've posted this before, but for the sake of repetition...
Well, for one, the color scheme looks like something Michael Graves would produce if on crack. The building's massing is a PoMo joke gone horribly wrong. The crown would make a great logo for LEGO. The base needs Weight Watchers. It's a mix of Shanghai-tacky and Guangzhou-attention whoring. It's a bigger loner than frickin' Carrie.
In short, it's a bloated, cartoonish, lackluster belch of a building. An architectural folly that we'll look back at in twenty years and say "What the fuckity-fuck were we thinking???"
I'll give it a 4.5/10 for displaying an attempt at being interesting. And I think I'm being REALLY NICE.

New Jack City June 26th, 2003, 08:46 PM 3 and less/10...What a disappointment, they could have used that height better. The shape is HORRIBLE, the colors and facade are boring, and the crown on top even looks ugly!
7 World Trade August 22nd, 2003, 06:43 PM dunno about this one. this one really looks like a big bully over all the other skyscrapers in the city. this one's even meaner to its surrounding than metlife. no problem with its facade though.

Cliff August 23rd, 2003, 03:56 PM Bad:
This is the most unsightly building I have ever known, it's not like those boring boxes which are so common, it's plain u-g-l-y!
The hole is too low, the two spikes at the corners makes it even more revolting, and the colour!! Ugh!
Good:
It is a landmark building with a very unique design, it reflects the oriental background of the building.
The hole creates a void which is like a portal to Taiwan. The shape of the building represents growth, especially the spikes.
But...
I still hate it 3/10:D

Not all together that bad. Interesting design, the facade and colors are interesting. Bad location tho, its an omninous and overpowering building. It'd be less of a bully if there was something to stand up to it. Seriously, though, the design just doesnt work together fully for me, but it has some merit.

Forza Raalte March 19th, 2005, 10:44 PM Is this thing part of the 10 heighest buildings of the world!!! it's a damn shame. It is one the ugliest buildings i've ever seen. Just the shape of the building is ridiculous. It should be demolished so the gorgeous Bank Of China Tower can make a part of the 10 tallest buildings in the world. 1.5/10 for this peace of shit
nova March 20th, 2005, 07:09 AM Unique all right.. But I do not very much like this building. Doesn't work for me. 6/10.
Azn_chi_boi March 21st, 2005, 12:48 AM not good, not my type, ugly building especially for world's top 10. only a 5.0 from me, lowest yet

knackeredninny April 4th, 2005, 02:35 AM Love at first sight. The "transformer" design is playful, and works. You have to see it in person for the full effect. It positively towers over the landscape in Kaohsiung.
Medo April 8th, 2005, 07:50 AM not too good looking, 4
get13 April 12th, 2005, 10:10 PM Ugh, It looks like a totally different building perched precariously on top of the other two 4/10

Pengui April 21st, 2005, 04:43 AM Hahaha, this is great stuff ^^
The people who commissioned, financed, designed and built this thing must be all crazy ^^ Definitely the most overbearing modern skyscraper :-)
I certainly wouldn't want to live in that ridiculously small block just next to it, but I do want to go there and have a look at it some day ^^

Gibbzy September 21st, 2005, 07:12 AM Great skyscraper there is nothing like it 9/10.
Oriolus September 25th, 2005, 01:53 AM 9/10. Sensational proportions and great facade, the lower half of which isn't quite as good as the top.
Tuntex should actually be listed behind Emirates Towers shouldn't it? The height of 378m is to antenna which isn't counted in official height. Official height is only 348m (13th tallest in the world or 12th if Petronas is counted as 1)
i_am_hydrogen September 25th, 2005, 03:25 AM Very bizarre. I like the color and that's about it.
3.5/10
Travis007 September 25th, 2005, 03:39 AM Interesting tower! I like the unique shape of the tower but the green facade kind of bothers me, overall: 7/10

Dancer September 30th, 2005, 02:28 AM This tower is very unique. It’s also very tall but the overall look is a bit off. 7.5
homecoming September 30th, 2005, 02:33 PM The building is designed to have an ancient Chinese temple looks on it, and it fails that part big time. What makes this building ugly is the outline and colours. But it was the tallest building in Taiwan till Taipei 101 took the spot of being there all the way. Somehow, this building is not pretty looking at all. But it is tall, and I can't get it a low score because of the layout this building has, with it's boxy form, it is still the greatest buildings ever made. 5.5/10
Gerard October 6th, 2005, 10:52 AM very ugly and very big. 6.5/10

CrazyCanuck December 12th, 2005, 03:25 AM A 5/10 for height and originality. Other then that this building has nothing going for it.
algonquin December 16th, 2005, 11:43 PM An absolute eyesore and a shameless gimmick. What particularly makes this building ugly is it's faux-facade 'shoulders'; the glass curtain wall continues where there is obviously no interior space behind it. And for christ-sake, whats with the fascia?
As for it's form, it resembles some sort of anime-transformer-lego experiment that a high-school student doodled. I expect that it's legs can bend. One could surmise that this was intended as a po-mo statement, but judging by the rest of the building, it's apparent that any such resemblance is pure accident, which makes it even worse.
3/10.
DragonHRuffy December 18th, 2005, 11:18 AM A wunderful building with an own character!
You guys just don't know.. what you`re talking about!
Ok... it isn't something for a European or American classical city.
But it has some futuristic. It looks like a "Macross"... do you know?!? The movie!
And I think that Kaohsiung shouldn't build buildings like ESB with the classical American style... Kaohsiung needs something new, 'cause it is a new orientated city like Shanghai... (not SOO big)... but more interesting and without so much poorness! :D
Don't care... Ilike this building and this is my opinion... your opinion can be the same or not! It's you way...
Greetz from germany... Bremen!

Scruffy88 February 22nd, 2006, 08:27 PM shes a stunner. love her or hate her, you remember her and you talk about her. I am ok with the shape and the hole but praise the developers and their ballsiness to buid it. it reaches super heights without cheating. i like the color. Look how huge it is at shoulder height. the width of three normal size towers at at least 700-800 feet. i like originality in buildigns and this demonstrates that on a large scale. my only true debit is the base. it looks like its sitting on a parking garage, never a good look, and it really is not. This has to be one of the biggest in terms of floor area.
