What is the definition of 'high rise', ie. after how many floors is a building considered high rise?

12 floors is what we use here in Sydney- I think that's standard... SA BOY??

correcto mondo, its 12floors or 35meters as defined by Emporis.
There are loads of buildings missing in all the cities listed above, but as I dont live in SA , its been a 5 year slog to get all those listed .

How accurate are these figures? Surely JHB cannot have less high Buildings than CT?

Like SABoy said, it is impossible to get all the buildings listed from abroad. Even Pretoria - if you think of Sunnyside with hundreds and hundreds of high-rises. But it is up to the people in these cities to photograph and send data to SABoy and others to make sure it gets on emporis.

One building thats missing from pretoria for example is the Human Sciences Building on Roper Street (University of Pretoria). Built in 1977. 22 Storeys, at one stage Roper ran underneath the building, now its closed and new offices was constructed in that area. The building was known as the slut amongst students, because it stradled the street.

Hopefully we can get more buildings listed. Durban has an immense number of high-rises because of a very dense CBD, plus the beachfront hotels and apartments. CT has a very very small CBD, thus more high-rises. But Jozi and Pretoria fell victim to unabated sprawl. the trend seems to be reversing though.

I did actually take a picture of the HSB on my last day at university a few weeks ago.. ;) Will upload that, and one other photo, which is Engineering no.2 on campus as well. Cant remember the storey count, but it's a significant building, because the top floor was built first, and lifted up, storey for storey... Some or other experiment by the civil engineering department at UP.

Anyway, will upload them tonight or so... :D

How many floors does the agricultural building have? I think at least 10. Engineering is 14floors, if Im not mistaken.

And then the residences.

Erika, Madelief, Magrietjie - all more than 12 floors.
Akademia also has more than 12 floors.
And this is only on campus...

There are at the very least about 50-70 buildings unaccounted for in Pretoria... But it will take a while to get to all of them.

As for floors, I will have to go count, but there are many buildings higher than 12 floors. On campus, I can think of about 10 or so...

Only problem with Pretoria is, I don't really know anybody from these forums who lives there, who could help. And it's a bit scary going into sunnyside and downtown by myself (considering that I'm white, and there are still a lot of dangerous areas).

However, I do want to try and get photos of the buildings early next year. Anybody else in the area?

Indeed... as opposed to our dearest Jakes1, who is a frequent stroller through Sunnyside (being a lady of the night and all that jazz...)

There is a new building going up in Sandton next to Village walk. Seems to be a holiday inn, with two huge cranes working on the site. Anyone with info on this?

Yip, thats the Hydro, I was wondering about the one near mushroom farm, right next to village walk. the sign says holiday inn, without any renders. and judging from the size of the cranes it is going to be a couple of storeys, prob same height as the hydro...

Hydro should be more than 3 floors up by now, cos the last time I passed there about 2 to 3 weeks ago the ground floor was done.

What's happening with the BMW showroom across from Mushroom Farm Park? It was supposed to be a 16-18 story block of flats, but they cancelled it due to high building costs. I then heard that they are continuing to build 13-15 floors above the showrooms for offices.. Anyone have details on this?

Also saw the holiday inn building. Perhaps there's info on their site?

They are definately building on top of the showroom, the cranes are there, but no idea how many floors are going to be added. And no info on holiday inn site...
