Please upload photos and information on any buildings that can be classified as a high-rise (12 floors, or 35m) so that SA BOY can update emporis.

First up.

PRETORIA:

Engineering no. 2 - University of Pretoria

12F (10 physical, 2 floor gap) above ground, 3 floors underneath. This building was built top to bottom, and then lifted up as the floors were completed, as an engineering experiment.

Human Sciences Building - University of Pretoria

22F (some of them can't be seen as they are lecture hall floors, without windows.) Roper street used to run underneath this building, but the street was closed off and the University Client Service Centre filled the gap underneath.

I will take more photos of Pretoria buildings in early 2007 when classes start again, and try to get some photos of Polokwane buildings in the next few weeks.

Johannesburg - I suspect that there are alot of high-rise buildings in the Hillbrow/Berea area (many of them still derelict) as well as a few others high-rises in places like Kempton Park, Alberton, Germiston, Benoni, Brakpan, Krugersdorp and Roodefontein that are not being listed.

Pretoria - It appears that there are at least 10 high-rise buildings that may need to be added to list as I believe there are more than 30 high-rise buildings in Pretoria and it's suburbs.

East London - I do not have any names of buildings but I know that there must be at least five or six high-rise buildings in the CBD and beachfront area (I've seen them myself in pictures of the city) that are currently not on the list. Many of these buildings were built in the 1960's and 1970's.

Margate - This resort town on the KZN South Coast has at least one or two high-rise buildings.

Other Towns - The boom in the Western Cape over the last decade means that there could be high-rise buildings in such towns as George, Mossel Bay, and Stellenbosch. Outside the Western Cape take a look at towns such as Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Witbank and Newcastle.

Eastern Cape

Bisho - The 13-storey Dukumbana House in Bisho, the provincial capital of Eastern Cape was built in the late 1980's when it was part of the nominally "independent" homeland of Ciskei. The building now houses three provincial departments for the Eastern Cape. Bisho is also now part of the new Buffalo City (East London) metro council.

Umtata - The 12-storey Botha-Sigcau Building in Umtata was built in 1976 when the Transkei "gained nominal independence" as a homeland. The building served as an administrative headquarters for the Transkei. The building is likely to have been renamed since the ANC came to power.

Northern Province

Polokwane (Pietersburg) - The 12-storey Civic Centre was built in the 1970's.

North-West Province

Klerksdorp - There is a 13-storey nursing college building in the town that was built in the 1970's.

Gauteng

Springs - There is a 16-story building that was built in the 1970's.

Stellenbosch does not have - unless Helshoogte men's residence (happy memories for me...) is 35m... it has only 10 floors. Mossel Bay has 1, called Diaz Strand Resort or something, which I think is 12 or 14 floors. As far as I know, George has none. In East London we list only the Grain Elevation Complex, but there must be more. I'm sure Port Elizabeth, Kimberley and Bloemfontein are listed fully. Cape Town is basically listed fully, apart from the Telkom tower in Bellville's CBD, but we don't know the height. It may also be that some of the 10 and 11 storey buildings in the Cape Town CBD have had floors added to them within the past two years, in which case they need to be added. Paarl has one high rise, but this is already on emporis.

One thing that we've certainly not listed, although Emporis does have a category for it, is silos. There are quite a number of silos in Cape Town and the Western Cape, but one would have to know the height, as number of floors would not suffice...

There are a few buildings in Polokwane that needs to be listed... And as I promised, I'll get details as soon as I get time off work. :) Hopefully next weekend!

I believe there are only 5 or so buildings which pass the 12 floor mark here, and a few others between 7 and 10... Not the biggest CBD, but I'm really proud of this city. :D

I was driving a different route today from work, and I was quite surprised... In the time that I've been back from PTA (that would be since the 19th of November) there has been an incredible amount of work already done. Everywhere over the city ads are going up next to plots of land where new offices and other buildings are to be built. LOTS of new entertainment venues and restaurants opening as well. There's an awesome new News Cafe about three blocks from where I work, just opened last week, which is doing such an awesome job for that part of the city already. Packed from breakfast till closing! Really alive in the CBD!

One of the problems I see with the Emporis site is the list of 20 cities in SA need to be changed as it is ridiculous that small towns like Piet Retief, Ulundi and Nongoma are listed while bigger ones like Paarl are not listed. That needs to change.

Also the population statistics on Emporis for SA cities are 26 years old and there are more up to date stats on cities from STATISTICS SA under the 2001 census, while population estimates are made each year.

dont even go there. I fought for ages with them on the stats and area sizes and eventually gave up and left it as they wanted it and i focused on adding buildings. the big issue was the metro vs city population figures and if anyone can find new offical stats maybe we can attempt to change them again.

as for adding cities, well some existed before I arrived in 2001 and I added new ones and incorporated others when the metro cities were created.
belive me its a labour of love doing this with no reward and shit laod of critisism (not aimed at you mate)

Giles is right. We inherited shit from some American and Canadian guys who had been digging up a few things, but also added lots of rubbish. Consequently, we have been at it hammer and tong for the past 4 years, at least. And once you think you've got it under control, some fool goes and adds Plumstead as a metro city to Cape Town. I could kill them, I really could.

I haven't been to the station in Polokwane in years... so unfortunately I have no idea what the conditions are. I can't imagine that it will be really bad, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are renovating them. Quite a lot of people use the trains, so it has to be in relatively good condition.

Rib,

Whan you start back at Uni in Pretorai could you take additional pics of Pretorias buildings as some only have 1 picture and we could have some much better pics to show off our buildings and some have none at all like Africa eagle life centre 27F and the Mutural and federal Sentrum at 19F.
Also if you are able to put street names and numbers to the buildings , it would be much appreciated.

The Taj Palace Hotel Cape Town is still listed as Hotel Sofitel Cape Town and needs to be updated to reflect this and the fact there is development activity on the site. It seems that some listings like this one are not updated regularly. Also the Oscar Pearse Hotel needs to be added in Cape Town.

SA Boy,

I do have a detailed listing you can add to Emporis which will be the first skyscraper for Mossel Bay, the Diaz Strand Hotel, which is a 13-storey beachfront hotel (four stars) that opened three years ago on the Diaz Strand, a waterfront development in Mossel Bay that was developed over five years from 1999-2004 at a total development cost of R500 million.

The waterfront is located on Diaz Beach, which is a rapidly developing beachfront that now rivals Plettenberg Bay.

The hotel is the flagship development on this waterfront and towers over several high-end holiday apartment developments that are 5-7 floors tall. Here's the listing:

Name: Diaz Strand Hotel & Resort
Floors: 13
Year Built: 2004
Development Cost: R70 million
Hotel Operator: Gatsby International Hotels
Guest Rooms: 86
Tourism Grading Council Star Grading: 4-stars
Location: Diaz Strand Waterfront development, on Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay, Western Cape
Website: Gatsby International Hotels - Diaz Strand (http://www.gatsby.co.za/hotels/diaz-strand/profile/)
