Google chief offers advice to Arabs

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Arab countries are nearing the point where they will join the ranks of the world's most competitive economies, but entrepreneurs still need access to venture capital funds to bankroll their ideas, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said Monday.

"The next story in the development of the Arab world will be the unleashing of the power of the Arab entrepreneur," Schmidt told a gathering of hundreds of political and business leaders from the Middle East and elsewhere. "Huge new non-oil businesses can be created here that are global and export-oriented."

Schmidt, speaking at the opening session of the three-day Arab Strategy Forum in Dubai, said the Arab world will be transformed into an economic player of global standing through the Internet.

"This will happen, and it is a good thing," he said.

But Arab countries still lack venture capital funds like those in the United States that have been instrumental in starting successful Internet companies such as Google itself.

"The most important thing is to have access to risk capital. Markets are in place, but you need money pools for people who just have a brilliant idea," said Schmidt, whose audience included Dubai leader Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and other regional leaders.

Gulf Arab investors already have plowed hundreds of billions of dollars into real estate, tourism and urban development projects in the region, but have largely bypassed research and development and startup businesses. Dubai and Qatar are building research and development parks, but the ventures have yet to produce prominent new companies.

Schmidt said Google has begun simultaneously translating Web pages from English to Arabic and vice versa, making the Internet more relevant to Arabs.

The search engine chief executive also urged his audience to make sure the broadest possible swath of society has full access to the Web. Access to the Internet is censored in most Arab countries, but control is not nearly as tight as in China, he said.

Anyways i think you misunderstood me...what i meant was back in the days probably in the 14th-16th century, we had a lot of beautiful castles to mosques to cities and even towns...If you see all the what so-called Gothic are actully taken from us...I think you still dont understand me right?...Btw we were very advanced in those days and the world looked up to us for knowledge, power and harmony...I guess you dont know that...if you know, well good for you ;)

well ur right kuwaiti some muslims r only muslims by name, but what i ment is that 1500 years ago ppl were more educated and they were always looking forward 2 the future, and making things better, not like now adays all ppl care about is salary and money, plus ppl in our time r not very educated and the education system in the middle east is not that good and very poor, that's why the amount of terorism went up, it needs 2 be fixed, and ppl need 2 look forward 2 what's good 4 the future

well kuwaiti 1500 years ago ppl were more educated and looking 2 what's best 4 the future not only 4 themselves, and they were muslims 4real not only muslims by name like now adays, in our time ppl all they care about is money and raising salaries, the education system is very bad and poor, that's why the amount of terrorism has increased in our region, cuz of the education system and cuz ppl don't know much about their religion, so we have 2 fix it, and make the country built by it's ppl not only forein companies can build our countries, the countries need 2 be built by it's ppl
2 me the most important thing 2 build a country or a nation is the education cuz after that every person will be responsible

I dont know who told you that 1500 years ago the Muslim Ummah was in good form. If you go into the detail, youll realise that it wasnt. The devil is in the detail. Read more about the Muslim Ummah 1500 years ago, it wasnt as good as you think.

Since after Prophet Mohammad's death (pbuh), the Muslim ummah divided into many opposing factions. One faction said that Imam Ali was to become ruler of Ummah. Another said Abu Baker As-sadiq to become ruler of Ummah. People lost unity, and many thousands converted back to their idol-worshipping religions. Then when Abu Baker was chosen as ruler, he had to fight a big battle in the Arabian peninsula against the thousands of people who "kafaru" and left Islam.

And from then onwards, the 4 rulers of Islam (after prophet Mohammad) were all murdered in cold blood, including Imam Ali (murdered inside a mosque in Kufa).

Then we have lady Aisha who went against Imam Ali (may god forgive her) and she stood up with Mawiya. And some say that Mawiya injured lady Aishah one day (backstabbed her) after letting her sit on a chair which then collapsed into a hole full of spikes.

And then Mawiya's son, Yazeed, took over the Ummah and became a powerful leader, caring more for his personal interests than anything else. He killed Imam Hussain (grandson of prophet Mohammad) and all his relatives. He made the women of the Ahlul Bayt widows. From then onwards, the Bani Ummayad controlled Islam. It become, the Ummayad Empire, more than the Muslim Empire.

They killed thousands of Iberians when invading Spain, and till this date they claim Spain belongs to them.

Tribal warfare, more than anything else. And then the Abbasids came, they developed Baghdad and made it a centre of science. But not for long. Just hundred years went by, and they were crushed by the Mongols.

Islam doesnt have a bright history as one perceives it.

The future is bright, because we are promised a moderate, and just Muslim Ummah under the hands of the Mehdi. But that would be when Islam shines. So far, it isnt shining, and hardly ever did.

Back to Kuwait.

I care about Kuwait. I dont care about what religion my Kuwaiti citizen practises. I care about one thing only, a genuine Kuwaiti who loves his country and always wants it to become the best. There are many Muslims, who dont drink alcohol, who never ate Pork, who pray 5 times a day. But this doesnt make them genuine. Their hearts are as black as oil, and they hardly care about their wife. Infact, they temporarily marry other women for sexual fun and then divorce them. They use "temporary marriages" as an excuse; or better yet they marry other women permanently. Most are prejudice and not open minded. When they see a christian, they dont look at the christian for who he is, but WHAT he is.

I prefer genuine people, no matter what religion. As long as he/she has ethics, family values and isnt corrupt then Ill respect them. Set aside their religion, but look at them personally.

Kuwait needs to open to the world, it needs to provide a government with a secular constitution. A constitution that provides equality for all religions. If we want to open to the world, we need to satisfy everyone in Kuwait, not just one particular religion. :)

Well said Kuwaiti !! I only wish Kuwait had more people like you !! I have a request to you, when you see one of your fellow citizen doing something wrong, take time and tell him not to do. This YOUR country and you are the one to take care of it !!
