View Full Version : WHAT R THE BEST BRIDGES IN THE WORLD? uk2012 December 6th, 2006, 09:48 PM DEL Ciudad Bristol December 7th, 2006, 04:53 PM Too many to list. you would have to list them by category (suspension, cable stay, arch etc) You could mention amongst others: Milau Bridge Akashi Kaikyo Clifton Suspension Tower bridge Pont Neuf Forth Rail Bridge Many of Calatrava's foot bridges etc etc etc Newcastle Guy December 7th, 2006, 05:36 PM The Newcastle/Gateshead Millenium bridge is nice. It's a very good footbridge: http://www.jakehowlett.com/gallery/photos/quayside13.jpg http://www.jakehowlett.com/gallery/photos/quayside17.jpg The other N/G bridges are behind it: http://www.jakehowlett.com/gallery/photos/quayside4.jpg uk2012 December 10th, 2006, 07:01 AM DEL the spliff fairy December 11th, 2006, 12:59 PM Too many to list. you would have to list them by category (suspension, cable stay, arch etc) You could mention amongst others: Milau Bridge Akashi Kaikyo Clifton Suspension Tower bridge Pont Neuf Forth Rail Bridge Many of Calatrava's foot bridges etc etc etc couldnt have ordered it better, tho' the ol coathanger in Sydney gets an honourable mention dronkula December 11th, 2006, 01:29 PM The Newcastle/Gateshead Millenium bridge is nice. It's a very good footbridge: http://www.jakehowlett.com/gallery/photos/quayside13.jpg http://www.jakehowlett.com/gallery/photos/quayside17.jpg Ok, I know I'm going to be hated for saying this, but I've always been a little underwhelmed by the Newcastle/Gateshead bridge. It's just not got the 'wow' factor. Compare it to this: Milau Viaduct http://www.tacuroctr.com/images/Blog/Millau_Viaduct.jpg or even this Clifton Suspension Bridge http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/content/images/2006/03/31/image36cf1_470x350.jpg Both of them you look at them and go 'Crikey - that's impressive!'. Cabman December 11th, 2006, 02:27 PM The milau viaduct is visually the most incredible piece of engineering that I have seen with my own eyes. And it's a very cheap at 5 euro's to cross. Newcastle Guy December 11th, 2006, 05:17 PM Ok, I know I'm going to be hated for saying this, but I've always been a little underwhelmed by the Newcastle/Gateshead bridge. It's just not got the 'wow' factor. Compare it to this: Milau Viaduct http://www.tacuroctr.com/images/Blog/Millau_Viaduct.jpg or even this Clifton Suspension Bridge http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/content/images/2006/03/31/image36cf1_470x350.jpg Both of them you look at them and go 'Crikey - that's impressive!'. well, it is just a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. You couldn't really expect the millau viaduct across the Tyne river, could you?:) The bridges you posted are perfect for their surroundings, just like I think the Millenium bridge is. It isn't overwheming, yet it is a very attractive bridge and it catches your eye, and this has helped it become an icon for the region. I wouldn't want any other bridge there, I think it is perfect for it's location and totally in scale with the quayside and Gateshead quays. That's why I think it is one of the best pedestrian bridges in the world:) Oh, and it tilts:D http://www.betterpublicbuildings.gov.uk/assets/images/finalists_2002/gateshead/gateshead_large_2.jpg eddyk December 13th, 2006, 05:11 PM The Newcastle Millennium Bridge can be found on the new 2007 pound coins. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/tenbobmartin/tenbobcoins059.jpg I have a thread in the erm...bridge section on this forum, and in the UK section somewhere 'Best of British Bridges' Newcastle Guy December 13th, 2006, 06:24 PM The Newcastle Millennium Bridge can be found on the new 2007 pound coins. It can? Thats great! I'm happy there is something modern to be proud of around here! I believe it is technically Gateshead's bridge, but I still see it as a Newcastle/Gateshead type thing. legolamb December 13th, 2006, 09:37 PM Stylish, Modern, Graceful and perfectly in context.. may I present to you... The Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam: http://static.flickr.com/101/302957698_cb16985aae.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/111/302957699_6fa1db329c.jpg?v=0 Telfordboy December 13th, 2006, 09:45 PM The Ironbridge The Forth Rail Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge The Milau Viaduct legolamb December 13th, 2006, 10:00 PM An honourable mention to the MIGHTY Humber Bridge. Maybe not the best in the world, but pretty special.. http://static.flickr.com/39/82104324_df436dbec7.jpg?v=1136488330 http://static.flickr.com/47/127613442_65798aba40.jpg?v=0 Insignia December 17th, 2006, 04:07 PM The thing about the Newcastle bridge is its surroundings. The neighboring buildings are just not as nice as the bridge itself. A few Skyscrapers and purely glass buildings would compliment for it though. Orgoglioso December 18th, 2006, 12:34 AM ^^ I disagree completely, Not only does it have the Sage or watever its called which is unbelievable, it has the Baltic museam and on the other side, Malmaison which looks really funkyu with that entrance and the view from the bridge is fantastic as you see all the bridges and along the river there are some geat victorian buildings, so thats a load of rubbish you just said! It's undoubtedly an impressive historical, industrial structure but to me it is far from elegant and not particularly beautiful. bobalania January 5th, 2009, 06:00 PM How about......
