The old buildings in pics 1 and 4 are amazing. Is the first one a Bhuddist temple and the second a Mosque? I've never seen a Mosque like that before, it's fascinating.

According to the poster, it's in Hohhot, capital of Nei Menggu (Inner Mongol)

Inner Mongolia is part of China while Mongolia is a separate country, well, it is a long history, it used to be part of China.

The temple with the five pagodas is really nice, but the surrounding is horrible with all the cheap shops and socialist-style buildings is horrible. The big temple below is Dazao Lama Temple. It is being restored right now, I think.

I'm sure it's a mosque, look there are crescents on the tips of the towers and the one on the right looks like a minaret (although a Chinese style one).
Also, I'm sure that's arabic writing on the gate (the top cross beam just under the roof). It's really interesting if this is a Chinese style mosque.

The city still looks very underdeveloped considering it is a provincial capital. It reminds me of a normal Chinese city in the 90s.

It is one of the big mosques in inner mongolia. Hui muslim is another ethnical group next to mongolians in hohhot. Many Chinese mosques are characteristic of Chinese architecture. There is a splendid and biggest one in Xi'an which looks like a garden inside.

Whatever mongolian or Chinese writing it is , it means "Qingzhen";"清真";"Islamic food". Looking closely, there is a half-moon on top of that pavillion. Outside, a Hui guy on a white hat just came out of the mosque.

Look carefully at the Mongolian script to the left on the green banner and the Arabic script on the red gate... they are clearly two different languages.

Mongolian is written top down, while Arabic is right to left.

"The arabic writing is Mongolian" is wrong because it isn't arabic writing, but Mongolian. In middle, I believe there is an arabic symbol indicating" Islamic". On both sides, it is mongolian writing. It is quite common that in mongolia and Tibet, the owners of Hui restaurants use two languages showing "qingzhen" in order that non-Hui people visit them. In other cities, they simply use chinese and one arabic symbol " islamic" outside of restaurants.

Sorry my bad.I think andrew was referring to the writing on the red gate, that indeed is Arabic. I thought he was referring to the writing on the shops, which is Mongolian.

To untrained eyes, the two may look similar but it's easy to distinguish the two as one is written horizontally while the other is written vertically.

Anyone care to explain the difference between Mongolian and Manchurian?
I know Manchu borrowed the writing from Mongolian but I don't know how much deep they involved within each other.
