Congrats to London on this beautiful building!... Love the glass, the shape.... everything! In my opinion, this will be one of the most spectacular skyscrapers in the world when completed.

In some ways it resembles a little brother to Freedom Tower/WTC1.

Called "Tower View (http://www.maximproperty.co.uk/towerview.php)" by the developers: some apartments (with a café on the ground floor) built on the corner of Tower Bridge Road and Tooley Street about five years ago.

What is the purpose of the backpack here? No one else seems to complain about it - probably because we are getting such a great tower - but it does seem to ruin it a bit for me. In fact, it really pisses me off, it ruins the slenderness of the tower at some angles. And if they stick that pointless spire on it, I won't be happy. I just wanted the Shard to standalone, not with some groundscrapery turd tagged on to the back of it.

I'm not a fan either, the vertical / horizontal lines of the backpack are totally at odds with The Shard, if it had similarly angled sides to the main tower it would look fine, but as it is it just looks like a cheap afterthought / extension despite the same cladding.

Shard London Bridge skyscraper splinters opinion

It began as a sketch on the back of a napkin in a Berlin restaurant in 2000. Ten years on, Shard London Bridge is the tallest building in the UK, at more than 235m (771ft).

Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the south London skyscraper is planned to rise to 87 storeys, 310m (1,016ft) by 2012, becoming the tallest building in the European Union. Mr Piano has a clear vision of the positive impact he thinks the tower will have on the city.

"The building will be atmospheric. It will play with the city. It will be a symbol of lightness," he said. But the skyscraper, better known as the Shard of Glass, also has its critics. "I would have liked to see something more materially interesting and elegant," said Philippa Grantham, 31, who has watched the tower rise on the capital's skyline each day on her commute into London Bridge station.

"In my opinion, a tower doesn't have a particular front or a back but this building certainly has a back side and it's fairly crude."

'Vertical city'

"After a shower it will be blue. In the evening it will become warmer and more red," he said. Shard London Bridge, Copyright of Sellar Group Shard London Bridge will have a viewing gallery on its 72nd floor. The building was designed to be a "vertical city that has many functions," he added. "It will be living 24 hours a day and intensify city life." The Shard will have office space at its base and, higher up the building, will contain a hotel, apartments, a viewing gallery and spire at the top.

In 2003, following a £10m public inquiry, the Shard was approved by then Deputy PM John Prescott. But English Heritage said it was disappointed with the outcome and the building was "inappropriate".

Key objections it raised included concerns over the impact on views of St Paul's Cathedral from Parliament Hill. But the Shard's property developer James Sellar said that its 244m (800ft) viewing gallery "will open up the views of places like St Paul's that have never been seen". Local campaigners Bermondsey Village Action Group (BVAG) fear the Shard will create a "domino effect" with more tall buildings being approved, forming a "wall of steel and glass".

Last week, a 31-storey tower - The Quill - was approved by Southwark council, which will stand within metres of the Shard. "The Shard is the umbrella under which the proposed high-rise buildings in the area are seeking to take shelter," said Russell Gray, from BVAG. "Secrecy is the name of the game with the Shard."

'High benchmark'

But Mr Sellar said: "The design philosophy is about transparency rather than opaqueness." "We've set a pretty high benchmark for the regeneration of the area." Mr Piano said he did not want the Shard to create an influx of tall buildings in the capital. "By making one tall building, you can't assume that more tall buildings in the area are good."

But he said the Shard will make the area "a more humanised place". And through the regeneration of London Bridge station, as part of the Shard development, "it will be a better place to travel through", he said. The tower's supporters believe the building will be a pivotal moment for south London.

"It is a landmark building and is a flag for the regeneration," Mr Sellar said. So will the Shard become an iconic landmark to rival New York's Empire State Building or Paris' Eiffel Tower? "You can't be narcissistic and say I'm going to make the iconic building," said Mr Piano. "But it may become iconic in time."
The shell of the building is due to be completed by May 2012.

And the Olympics planned for that year should prove an opportunity to beam the Shard's image around the world. "With more than a billion people looking at London for the Olympics, its a great way to have the building presented and the capital's innovation celebrated," said Mr Sellar.

I work for Channel 4 News. The Shard are showing the press around tomorrow and we might well go along. I just wanted to pick yur brains for the best locations round the city for a clear view of the shard. There are some nice still images posted on this forum. We do need it to be filming public property tho - i.e Network Rail aren't going to give us permission to come and film from their paltforms.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Personally, Nick, I think keep it simple - London Bridge and anywhere along that north side of the river there will provide you with a really good largely unhindered view of the development- unless you have a helicopter, you may get a decent shot like this -

Obvious candidates IMO

St Thomas Street/Borough High Street, if you can get wide (tends to be fairly busy with pedestrians though).

Rotherhithe Street SE16 (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=rotherhithe&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=20.403926,25.092773&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Rotherhithe,+Greater+London,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.501378,-0.054832&spn=0.000654,0.001277&t=h&z=20), gives a decent sense of scale with Tower Bridge. Bermondsey Wall East, a little further west may be slightly more accessible with a car.

http://www.cybertects.co.uk/gallery2/d/113007-2/20101119_0018.jpg

I think you might also do well at Wapping High Street (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=rotherhithe&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=20.403926,25.092773&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Rotherhithe,+Greater+London,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.504502,-0.067745&spn=0.001307,0.002553&t=h&z=19), but it's the wrong side of the river for me. :)

Well, I took advantage of the good weather today to get some pics in (Paris doesn't seem to have been so lucky from my reading of French news). And this time I remembered to take my circular polariser...

There are about forty more photos from today (and about 2,700 others from the last fifteen months or so) in my Shard Gallery (http://www.cybertects.co.uk/gallery2/v/architecture/london/shard/).

Queen Elizabeth Street providing its customary useful spot to observe the whole tower.

London's Shard developer seeking office tenants in 2011

The developers of mixed-use London skyscraper the Shard will start their search in January to find an anchor tenant to replace Transport for London (TfL) in the yet-to-be finished building's prime-grade office space.

"We are purposefully taking our time, watching what the market is doing. We have a very advantageous position," James Sellar, chief executive of Sellar Property Group (SPG), told Reuters on Thursday. The Shard, which is adjacent to London Bridge Station on the fringe of the City financial district, will be Europe's tallest building when completed in 2012.

It will total 898,000 square feet of floor space, including 595,000 sq ft of plush offices priced at a headline rent of up to 70 pounds ($110) a sq ft, SPG Chairman Irvine Sellar said. Irvine Sellar expected the building to be fully pre-let before it opened mid 2012.

"Letting will be in the mid- to late-50s (pounds a square foot) at lower levels rising to 70 (pounds) per square foot at the higher levels," he said. Some companies had expressed interest in leasing offices in the Shard, including US banks, the chairman said. Property consultant King Sturge said third-quarter average prime rent in the City of London was 52.50 pounds a sq foot, up 6 percent year-on-year.

The building is being developed by The London Bridge Quarter (LBQ) joint venture, in which SPG is a partner with Qatar. LBQ bought-out TfL's pre-let agreement for 192,000 square feet earlier this year. Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has pre-let 192,000 sq ft of the Shard.

"we're changing London's history', WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? The past isn't changing. I hate these guys who are so consumed with the history of a place they want it to remain in stasis forever.

Still, the other one was right. None of the other buildings being planned for the area are anywhere near as beautiful as the shard, it's a shame economic sense and artistic aren't more compatible.

I think lots of skyscrapers had done something similar long before 1WTC or the Shard were glints in the architects' imaginations.

The reflection looks great in most of the pictures I've seen. It seems no expense has been spared with the cladding especially. Of Course I still need to see it in the flesh to be able to say for certain either way, and that's something I plan to do soon. These comments however are starting to remind me of the Argentine willy-waving and clutching at straws over in the UK Barracks threads  You seem to want to undermine positivity of The Shard for some strange reason. Despite almost constant good press in regards to the cladding, especially from those who have seen it in the flesh, you seem to want to belittle it.

Well, it's good to know that the Shard's cladding is so good it defies belief I suppose ;)

All it is, is a reflection of another building. Due to the reflections from that angle and the fact it's all glass means you can't see the actual floors properly from there. It's not some kind of conspiracy.

The skyline’s the limit for London

It is not even completed, yet the skyscraper known as the Shard has already set a record for London’s tallest building, surpassing the 235-metre tall One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, east London. When completed in 2012, it will be the tallest building in the European Union. It will be used for offices, residences and a hotel.

Growing up out of the morass of Victorian railway arches and hospitals at its base on the south side of London Bridge, the Shard is a feat of engineering and an important reminder that construction is a complex process. The revealing of the innards of the building has captured the imagination of visitors and residents of London: many have been enthralled at realising the process behind building skyscrapers, which are built around a concrete lift core.

In fact, when it comes to the Shard, it is the engineering rather than the architectural vision that has received most attention. And when the building eventually gets covered in 11,000 panes of glass, it will not be half as impressive as it is now.

The Shard was first mooted as a project over 10 years ago by the Sellar Property Group. It belongs to a different economic and political timeframe, one which sits uneasily with contemporary aesthetic judgments. The initial plan was to build an even taller skyscraper, but the planning permission was refused in 2000. As a result, the developers brought in a new architect, Renzo Piano. This was a smart move to smooth the project’s progress given that Lord Rogers, who Piano had worked with on the Pompidou Centre in Paris, was by that time an adviser to the then-London mayor, Ken Livingstone.

The final pinnacle form of the Shard is supposed to have been inspired by the spires huddled around St Paul’s Cathedral in Canaletto’s eighteenth-century paintings. But this seems nonsensical: the Shard will be three times the height of the cathedral. In fact, Piano’s professed inspiration is rather cynical. For years, the open views to St Paul’s were sacrosanct, partially because of a sentimental attachment to Canaletto’s paintings, in which St Paul’s rises above London’s other churches. The impact of this almost 300-year-old series of paintings has been reinforced by images of the cathedral surviving the Blitz and the strange fetishistic cult that Prince Charles is building around his beloved St Paul’s dome.

Piano, though, has used this rhetoric of spires against his critics. (Indeed, the Shard takes its name from a criticism of the project by English Heritage, which advises the government on historical preservation.) He has argued that the building’s shape means it intrudes less on the skyline than a rectilinear skyscraper – which is like arguing for a conventional bullet over a rubber one on aesthetic grounds. In fact, if anything, the building, with its tapering floor and slowly shrinking floor plates, merely monumentalises the economics of its structure. The lucky few who will get to own one of the apartments at the narrow top of the building will need to spend around £10million.

We can expect more of the guff about slender forms mimicking the church spires. Despite the fact that London mayor Boris Johnson has toned down his anti-tall building rhetoric, the London View Management Framework, published this year by the mayor’s office, increases the protection of the capital’s viewing corridors, detailing no fewer than 26 protected views in the city.

Johnson has concocted this labyrinth of sightlines because he knows that the City of London, the beating heart of Europe’s financial services industry, needs projects like the Shard. One only needs to look at the rental prices. In 2006, Transport for London agreed to rent 200,000 square feet in the Shard at a cost of around £38.50 per square foot. In June 2010, Sellar bought out the contract and now aims to charge as much as £70 per square foot – an astonishing figure that helps turn London into one of the most expensive cities in the world for office rental. In addition, the timing of the financial downturn has left London with a deficit of hotel spaces before the Olympics. The Shard will also have a five-star luxury hotel occupying 18 floors.

The aesthetic arguments appear farcical in the face of these social, economic and technical factors. Therefore, the question of what the ultimate form of the building will be has appeared nowhere near as exciting as the technicalities behind its construction.

The Shard was built by using ‘jump lifts’ that rise in the permanent shaft as the building gets taller. The contractors, Mace, are working under a fixed-price contract, introduced to get the £2 billion project finished in time for the London Olympics. As a result they began the substructure and superstructure at the same time; 550 tonnes of steel columns had to be threaded through the piling of Southwark Towers, which was demolished to make way for the Shard. Engineers scanned in a photocopy of a microfiche record of a hand-drawn original and fitted in each of the 100 or so steel columns. When it came to construction-time they all fitted perfectly.

These details may seem trivial but they are, in fact, important. They show that we have the technology to build in a concentrated way in the centre of London despite all the archaeology and infrastructure that lies beneath the surface. It is the planning obsession with preserving views that holds development back.

In the next few years, London Bridge will become an island of modern development. London Bridge Place, a 17-storey tower, will be built next to the Shard. London Bridge station, a busy but ugly commuter hub, will also get a makeover.

Even Boris secretly knows that the future for busy, wealthy cities like London is to build upwards. Rather than consigning modernity to small stretches around train stations, though, we should be integrating these structures into a more dynamic urbanism. For instance, we should be thinking about how public sections could be linked into the raised walkways of the South Bank. If we are to enjoy the benefits of high-rises we should be thinking of how we can best connect them at higher levels rather than how to avoid looking at them altogether.

Interesting article, although I disagree with the stance against the aesthetic claims since the cathedral spire poking up above the city makes a really nice counterpoint to the shard.

It's apparently negative outlook combined with resignation to the fact that it's economically necessary to build up might help to convince a few more tall building doubters though.

that walkie talkie abomination is a disgrace

That's a really ignorant comment to make. If you knew anything about Fenchurch Street, you would know that the architects have worked hard to open up views at street level for the benefit of the public realm. This means the building has been drawn back from it's maximum possible footprint to enhance surrounding historical buildings. The result is the top heavy appearance of the building which I don't think will be as bad as people are making out. This render does not do it any favours.

Not the Shard but it's part of the overrall redevelopment:

Designers on board London Bridge transformation

Network Rail today announced the successful bidders for two major design contracts for the redevelopment of London Bridge station and the remodelling and resignalling of the railway infrastructure in the London Bridge area.

The work at London Bridge is one of Britain’s largest and complex railway projects. The station will be completely rebuilt to create more space for passengers with additional concourse space below the platforms at street level. The track layout will also be radically changed and the signalling renewed to accommodate metro frequency services on the Thameslink routes through the station.

This major upgrade will enable the route to combat congestion at the station, and provide greater journey opportunities for passengers on Thameslink services. The 16 month contract will see WSP take the current scheme for the station building through outline design to the build phase due to begin late in 2012.

The plans for the station include an entirely new station concourse, more space for passengers, better interchange between trains, buses and other modes of transport, and more capacity for longer more frequent trains to use the station.

Martin Jurkowski, project director for the second phase of Thameslink works said: “We’re confident that the design we are taking forward is the best possible solution in terms of operational capacity and affordability. The next challenge is to take this design through the planning process, and to deliver a station that meets the needs not just of London’s transport network, but of the surrounding area.”

WSP UK rail sector director, Dave Darnell, said: “We are delighted to be appointed as lead designer for London Bridge station and look forward to working with Network Rail to transform the station into a flagship transport interchange. This project has particular significance for WSP in adding a further dimension to our involvement in the revitalisation of the area around London Bridge, which includes the Shard, London Bridge Place and the bus station projects.”

Jacobs Engineering will complete the outline design of the railway systems elements including track, signalling, telecoms and associated power supplies. This will see extensive improvements and modernisation to the railway at and around the station, and elsewhere on the route to accommodate the longer, more frequent Thameslink trains.

“Both teams presented strong bids, and showed a real understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the project,” Network Rail’s Jim Crawford, major programme director for the Thameslink programme, said. “Engaging with the right suppliers, and giving them the opportunity to develop an effective design that will help facilitate the safe and cost efficient delivery of this challenging project is critical to the success of the Thameslink programme.”

No, along with a changing climate, its mainly because the Thames used to be a much, wider shallower river with a slower current (in some places it is only apparently 35-40% of its old width). Over the last few centuries property development, sewer construction, boulevard/rail construction etc etc have forced the river into a narrower channel and thus in the past allowed the river to discharge and clean itself more effectively.

Anyway back to the Shard, beautiful pics (as always) Cybertect :)

How will it become the tallest hotel in the world (outside of Dubai) though?
It won't, there are many hotels which are taller. There are also many skyscrapers which are partially occupied by hotels, for example the Ritz-Carlton in the 484 m tall International Commerce Center in Hong Kong or the Grand Hyatt hotel in the 420 m tall Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai.

So many 'the most', 'the largest', what a might beast this is!

From the article:

The Shard will become the tallest hotel building in the world outside of Dubai once completed, by virtue of the Shangri La hotel.

This can't be right? The International Finance Centre in Shanghai has a hotel that occupies the top floors and the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong does as well. They are both much taller than the Shard. Even the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago is taller than the Shard. The soon to be finished Abraj Al-Bait Hotel complex in Mecca will be nearly twice as tall as the Shard and it is mostly hotel. I am sure there are many other examples of mixed use buildings with hotels in them that are also taller than the Shard, I just can't think of any right now.

What were the authors of the article trying to intimate?

^^That is a list of ALL-HOTEL structures. The Shard, like many other developments these days are mixed-use buildings with hotels only occupying a portion of the tower.

But as I pointed out in my previous post, when it comes to mixed-use hotel projects, the Shard is by far not the second tallest.

'This is a list of the 100 tallest buildings in the world whose occupied height is devoted at least 90% to hotel use.'
