It looks great but the tower doesnt need that spire. Its already perfect:)

UncleScrooge February 12th, 2011, 06:00 PM I just can't help thinking of Ryugyong Hotel when I see pictures of The Shard.
I hope I can shake those pictures out of my head when it's completed.

I hope I can shake those pictures out of my head when it's completed.
Apart from the fact that they're both kind of triangular and come to a point, I don't really know where you're coming from with that. They're so different.
IMHO Ryugyong Hotel looks quite squat because of its width:height ratio, and the way the sides go up then down then up to the point gives it totally different lines.
Also the cladding looks totally different. And the way the top of Ryugyong is circular blunts it's angularity which is totally different from the shards sharp lines.

skyscraper03 February 15th, 2011, 01:13 AM very small supertall.. but I kind of like it.
SkyscraperSuperman February 15th, 2011, 04:05 AM It might be one of the smaller supertalls, but for London it's absolutely massive. :D

Agreed! And thanks! I love the highlights they give to the facade.
mindgoessnap February 17th, 2011, 08:40 PM The second to last picture above, those tubes on the edge of the cladding don't look very straight...Yeah, but the perspective on the photo creates a foreshortening effect that magnifies the small differences in angle on the tubes. If you aren't looking straight up at it, I think it will be less noticeable.

London receives just below 650 millimetres (25.6 in) per annum, which is less than Rome, Sydney or New York City

That doesn't say anything!
Sidney for example probably has extreme showers once in a while. While London has way more rainy days but just with miserable little drops ( I hate that), like here in Holland :(
Australia has less rainy days than the UK while Australia gets more heavy showers so more mm of rain in total.

Absolutely. I’ve seen allot of visualisations that look very convincing on paper but when it comes down to it, the overall outcome is disappointing to say the least. I think we all knew that the Shard would prevail. The quality of materials has not been compromised, and that says allot.

PortoNuts February 26th, 2011, 01:30 AM Don't look 72 floors down
As the 72-storey Shard takes its place in the London skyline, Neil Tweedie conquers his fears to experience the view from the top.
The public relations man is explaining how we are going to get to the top of the Shard.
"Lift to the 35th floor then transfer to the hoist to take us up the side of the concrete core. If you are not good with heights it's best to keep looking at the person in front of you."
Hoist? No one said anything about a hoist.
"It's a lift, really," he soothes. "But it runs on the outside of the building, at a slight angle."
Angle? What's it doing travelling at an angle?
"And it can be very cold, so wrap up."
Cold? Why should it be cold in a lift?
"Well, it's a cage-type thing, so we are open to the elements."
The sweat is now flowing freely from my palms. Everyone has their pet fear - yours truly's being a lack of proximity to the ground. Something of a disadvantage when visiting the top of what is soon to be Europe's tallest building.
The Shard, though barely half clothed in the reflective glass that will turn it into a gleaming spire, is already a dominating feature of the London skyline, looming over the intimate streetscape of Southwark on the south bank of the Thames. Due for completion in the summer of next year, it will soar 310 metres into the air, a 72-storey vertical city, home to a five-and-a-bit-star hotel, some extremely expensive flats, a "Joe Bloggs at the Shard" type gourmet restaurant and office space for 7,000 workers. The prefabricated spire that will top the building is the equivalent of another 15 storeys in height.
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, lauds the skyscraper as a "clear and inspiring example of confidence in the capital's economy." Simon Jenkins, chairman of the National Trust, prefers "a spike through the heart of historic London" and "a phallus from capitalist outer space." Can a phallus be conical? Well, yes, if it's from outer space, one supposes.

Project Director February 27th, 2011, 04:09 PM How I outfoxed the 1,000ft cub
A PEST controller told yesterday how she battled her fears to snare the fox living on top of Britain's tallest skyscraper.
Terrified Lisa Wood was hoisted up the outside of the 945ft Shard twice a day for two weeks to trap him.
When she finally reached the incomplete London tower's 72nd floor, she set a cage trap with pieces of chicken doused in sardine juice to lure Romeo the cub.
But it took a fortnight to outfox the fox, who had stunned builders by scaling the summit and surviving on scraps of their food.
Lisa, 43, said: "He was cunning. It took ages for him to fall for it. He'd look straight in my eyes as if he was saying, 'I know what you're up to'.
"Finally he took the food and the door slammed." She gave Romeo to a sanctuary, which released him.
Lisa said: "My first trip up to trap him was the scariest thing I've done. My son Grant was injured with the Army in Iraq, so he knows fear - and even he was impressed with me."

Wow, quite an unusual story.
1.- How can there be a fox in one of the most urban areas of London? I got to see a few of them, but deep in the Parks (Holland Park to be precise), not roaming among the cars and pedestrians.
2.- How did it climb all the way to the top?

It's already the tallest building in Britain.
koldweather February 27th, 2011, 08:22 PM Yeah the core structure is already higher then any other building, though the actual shard design still has a bit to go yet.
Had a look at it today from about 15 miles to the east of London, not bad looking already but will clearly look stunning once its finished, esp when its sunny.

It doesn't matter how long it will be the tallest tower for. Any height will be surpassed sooner or later. But the record holders will remain forever. :). You will always be able to say that this tower was the tallest in Europe.
It's like in sports. All records become outdated but not the record holders.:)
Scrapernab2 March 1st, 2011, 01:38 PM That is a wonderful way to look at it. Did anyone think less of the great pyramid when the Eiffel tower surpassed it? No. Does anyone see the Empire State Building as 'less' because there are many taller structures? Not me.

Draegen March 2nd, 2011, 04:33 AM Hey guys i found this article about a fox that lived in the shard im not sure if it was posted i dont go on this thread very much
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12573364
A fox has been discovered living at the top of the UK's tallest skyscraper.
The animal, named Romeo by staff, is thought to have entered the 288m (945ft) Shard building at London Bridge through the central stairwell.
It survived by eating scraps of food left by builders working on the incomplete structure.
The fox was captured and taken to Riverside Animal Centre in Wallington where it was fed and given a check-up.
Ted Burden, the centre's founder, said: "We explained to him that if foxes were meant to be 72 storeys off the ground, they would have evolved wings.
"We think he got the message and, as we released him back on to the streets of Bermondsey shortly after midnight on Sunday, he glanced at the Shard and then trotted off in the other direction."

Madman March 3rd, 2011, 12:50 PM It's not taken from the top of the Monument. You can see that off to the East.
It's taken above the eastern side of the site foe 20 Fenchurch Street.
I took a peek at their main web site earlier and they do a lot of aerial photography, so I suspect it's done from a helicopter. Probably with some kind of multiple-camera rig to capture a 360 degree view in one hit.
That or a tethered balloon.

MasterP March 3rd, 2011, 07:21 PM This building should have been right in the hart of central London, next to tower 42 or something. That would have made it one freaking great cluster :)
PortoNuts March 3rd, 2011, 08:11 PM I like the idea of a single tower facing its shorter cousins in the other side of the river. And the Shard boosted redevelopment of the London Bridge area as well, which was certainly needed.

And (correct me if I'm wrong) the top of The Pinnacle is higher AOD than the top of The Shard, on account of the City of London being a hill, so they'll look the same height and therefore very complementary.
cybertect March 4th, 2011, 01:54 PM They're fairly close, but the Shard still has 5m on the Pinnacle.
The Shard AOD: 309.98m (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/buildings.php?id=46)
Pinnacle AOD: 304.90m (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/buildings.php?id=2839)
With the Shard being 310m tall, ground level at The Shard is 20cm below OD.
Civil Aviation Authority rules for London City Airport set the maximum AOD height IIRC.

KillerZavatar March 6th, 2011, 04:33 PM with the pinnacle soon rising and the other buildings that are under construction, London will probably manage to get on the tallest 25 skylines on ultrapolis.
Pennypacker March 6th, 2011, 04:37 PM And he also thinks this is not a supertall, more like a skycraper.
Well there's no such thing as a "supertall" anyway, it's a made up term used by this website as a means of categorization.

No don't think they work at night.
MattToronto March 8th, 2011, 05:25 PM Do the construction continue at night? why there r so many lights implement on the tower?
Probably has to do with security and safety. With no "walls" perse if anyone managed to get up there without any light the odds of falling off are probably substantial. Also most construction sites have a working security crew at night.
