I noticed this morning that the new, Piano-designed concourse roof has made an appearance at last from within the station as a section of the old one has been taken down near to the top of Platforms 12 and 13.

A little more of the new concourse roof was opened up over the last 24 hours.

Looking up at the northern side of The Shard from within the station.

But need to say, the colour of cladding is arguably good, because its "wide-spread" so no new.

Hi all. Although I've been coming to this site for ages this is my first post. Just wanted to say how excited I am with all the current building projects in this great city. I'm fortunate to live centrally, and (weather permitting) I regularly walk around the City and South Bank when not working or sleeping in with a hangover. The Shard is my fav building, is the hotel supposed to be open in time for the Olympics? I'm doubtful.

it's so iconic.

Debatable, that word gets chucked about a lot these days- ESB, Eiffel tower and big Ben are iconic. Guys? I wouldn't even call it locally iconic... What would it be an icon for? Failure of imagination? Failure of functionality?

That's not to say I don't like it- the only reason I do like it is down to how old the concrete is looking- it IMO makes it look better, gives character. But after the reclad it's just going to look horrible again.

Shard attack: why don't we rise up against this monstrosity?
The skyscraper has ruined London's skyline and our lack of complaint suggests we've become blind to architectural ugliness

Sky-scraping the barrel … is the Shard an 'aggressive distortion of London's skyline'? Photograph: Lewis Whyld/PA Wire/Press Association Images
Someone has to speak up for the London skyline. It is being viciously attacked, invaded by philistines, and a nation stunned into acceptance of every monstrosity so long as we are told it is modern seems happy to see taste, style and proportion go out of the window.

Why are we putting up with the Shard? There should be protests, tormented editorials, parliamentary questions about the monster skyscraper that is unstoppably rising up near London Bridge. But compared with the controversies that greeted the infinitely superior Gherkin there appears to be general passivity, even enthusiasm, for this far more arrogant structure.

From the sunny top of Primrose Hill at the weekend, London spread out in blue and silver glory. The London Eye, the rounded, elegant form of Norman Foster's 30 St Mary Axe (said Gherkin) and the dome of St Paul's all dance together nicely in that urban masque. Modern architecture can work beautifully among the old streets and buildings that define London. But architectural conservatives have long said otherwise. In the aftermath of their falsely grounded scepticism about fine modern buildings, it is understandable that people decide the new is always good. The same has happened in art. After years of wrongly denouncing everything new in art, the entire British media at some point rolled over on its back and gave up. There is no public debate about art any more, because everyone seeking admittance to the elite is scared to look old-fashioned.

It is so British, this inability to decide visual cases on their own merits. People who have no natural feel for art judge it ideologically. I fear we are not a very visual nation at all. Compared with other countries, we seem totally incapable of appreciating, say, an urban public space. We think a healthy piazza life is the crowded carnival that Trafalgar Square has become. And we cannot tell the difference between a beautiful modern building that adds to the visual interest of London, and an aggressive, bombastic distortion of the skyline.

The Shard is grotesquely out of scale with other London landmarks: it is so big that it demands a massive skyscraper forest around itself. In other words, as you read this, the future history of London is being decided. This city, which grew gradually over centuries, will not keep its character in our century. It will become an anonymous maze of corporate citadels, a Houston-on-Thames, as the Shard generates copies and rivals.

Skyscrapers can be ugly. They can also be beautiful. The British fear of modernity once refused to see their beauty. But it invited a backlash that now seems blind to their potential ugliness. Competing polemics produce an insensitive society. London has been enriched by new architecture in recent years. But the Shard and the unneeded grandiosity it will unleash can only impoverish a great city. Future generations may see this building as the most significant in London in our time – but they will not thank us for it.

That's why it's good the Shard is on the other side of the river. If located in the City it woul never be such a landmark because there would be too much competition from other projects.

Skyscrapers play havoc with London's historic skyline

London's newest skyscraper is advancing floor by floor into the record books, but critics say The Shard and a rash of other towers under construction are ruining the capital's historic skyline.

When it is finished in 2012, The Shard, a glistening triangle by world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, will stand 310 metres (1,016 feet) high, becoming the highest tower in Europe. Already the view from the 72nd floor -- there are 15 more above it -- is enough to bring on a serious bout of vertigo.

The tower dominates London's skyline, dwarfing historic buildings like St Paul's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament, and is gaining height alongside about half a dozen other skyscrapers shooting up across the city.

Among these is the slightly curved top-heavy block nicknamed Walkie Talkie; The Cheese Grater, which is upright on one side and sloped on the other; and The Pinnacle, also dubbed The Helter-Skelter because of its spiral shape. Peter Rees, the man in charge of planning in the City of London financial district for the past 25 years, is enthusiastic about the new buildings and cites the quirky names as proof of public support.

"It indicates that the public have noticed something which is distinctive, which needs to be given a personal name, a friendly name in a way that they wouldn't if it was an anonymous building or something they disliked," he said. The trend for towering office blocks -- and nicknames -- began in 2003 with the Swiss Re building, universally known as The Gherkin despite the insurance firm's efforts to use its address as its official name, 30 St Mary Axe.

Unlike in Paris, another capital full of historic buildings where the skyscrapers have been neatly arranged into certain districts, the London towers appear to have popped up all over the place like mushrooms. In reality the buildings often take years to be approved -- The Shard, a futuristic structure with huge splinters of glass pointing to the sky, took 12 years to come to fruition.

Concerns about the building prompted the former Labour government to hold a lengthy public inquiry before deciding in favour.

One of The Shard's strongest critics is English Heritage, the national body responsible for protecting historic places. It says the tower has ruined a protected view of St Paul's Cathedral, one of Britain's most iconic monuments. The Shard "is a marvellous building, but it's in the wrong place", said the organisation's regional director, Paddy Pugh.

Although there is no maximum height for buildings in London, the authorities protect views of historic buildings from the river and surrounding hills. This includes panoramas of St Paul's, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace from locations such as Parliament Hill in north London, one of the best places to survey the city.

From Parliament Hill, The Shard appears to stand right behind St Paul's and absorbs its stately curves into its bulk, even if in reality the skyscraper is located several hundred metres away on the other side of the River Thames.

To those who cry sacrilege, Rees points out that Christopher Wren's domed design for St Paul's, which was the tallest building in London from its construction in 1710 until 1964, was itself hugely controversial.

"When it was constructed, London was used to gothic cathedrals with tall spires and to have this new continental invention of the dome appearing in London divided people," he said. Rees added: "I think urban areas need that sort of visual stimulation."

For the opponents of London's new skyline, there is some consolation, as the new mayor of London Boris Johnson has tightened the restrictions to protect the city's historic views in the future.

But there is no getting away from The Shard, which grows taller by the day.

All I wanted to say is that this building is one of the best investments that happened to London in years. It's very beautiful, have a great localisation and in a way is very London. It's going to be one of the best landmarks, another to a big collection.

But the best thing is that it looks great from all places from which you can see it. Tourists gonna love it

London Banks Will Add 11,000, Need Four More Shard Towers

Banks and financial-services companies in London will add 11,000 employees in the next three years and will require the equivalent of four Shard skyscrapers to accommodate them, BNP Paribas (BNP) SA’s real estate unit said.

Banks will need 1.6 million square feet, with the City of London district and Mayfair areas most likely to benefit, according to the report. The 1,016-foot (310-meter) Shard will be Britain’s tallest building when completed. “Financial-sector demand will be there, the occupiers will pay the rents,” BNP Paribas said in the report. “Occupiers will push hard for lease flexibility.”

About 75 percent of financial companies said business would expand over the next three years, and 55 percent said they would employ add employees, the study said. The strongest growth is expected by smaller financial companies while the biggest banks are expecting to expand more slowly, the report said.

Transport links are the most important consideration in influencing decisions about the location for new office space, followed by lease flexibility, rent level and workforce availability, the report said.

@cybertect, i just want to ask you one question, how do you take panorama picture? Do you have to capture 2 or 3 times and then you add all those segments together by photoedit software? Can i take pano picture with normal digi camera like FS-37? no? :ohno:

cybertect
April 16th, 2011, 01:03 AM
I'm pretty slap-dash about it.

That was made up of four hand-held photos taken with my 5D and a 35mm prime lens. Set the camera in manual exposure mode to ensure it's even across all the pictures. Then shoot four frames trying to keep them level. I overlap about 30% on each one to give the stitching software the best chance of lining things up well.

If I were doing it properly, I'd have a tripod and a specialist pano head that ensures the camera pivots about a single point in space.

From there on in, it's into Photoshop CS5 which has a stitching facility. Crop, tidy up and then my usual PP.

There's a number of software options if you don't have Photoshop - PTGui (http://www.ptgui.com/) for example, which has a version you could try out for free.

You may find it a rather more difficult with an FS-37 as it doesn't allow you to control the exposure manually (it does AE program only) so you'll likely find that one side of the image is darker than the other with shifting light conditions.

I suspect that you may find that PTGui and other stitching software won't correct for distortions in the lens of the FS-37, which will make seamlessly joining up the images trickier.

Having said that, give it a go! :)

Skyscrapers play havoc with London's historic skyline

London's newest skyscraper is advancing floor by floor into the record books, but critics say The Shard and a rash of other towers under construction are ruining the capital's historic skyline.

And that historic skyline "ruined" some previous historic skyline and that one ruined nice countryside. What's the point?

Richmond Park?

I initially thought Horsenden Hill, but I assume that's Lots Road power station lining up with The Shard so the angle points towards Richmond...

It is from Richmond Park

...and it says so in the tags on the Flickr page, which is one of the reasons why putting the links in is a smart idea. ;)

I quite like the grainy effect ;). We all pumped for the London Marathon tomorrow / today?

I'm totally pumped for LM! Well, as pumped you can be watching it on tv with TV remote in one hand and a bag of crisps in the other! :D

Omg this airship thing has been getting on my nerves all day! No matter where I was, I seemed to be every where, now it's just circling over Holloway at the moment.

I love airships, it's been years - I think more than a decade - since I've seen one around here.

Isn't it because of London Marathon today?

I saw the marathon on BBC and they showed some nice areal shots of this tower. :)

This is more interesting 'because it can be done' than for any other merit.

I was up on Epsom Downs this afternoon; fifteen-plus miles away from the centre of town. I had my iPhone and a pair of binoculars with me and I wondered how well it would work if I put the phone up to the binoculars' eyepiece to take a pic.

Not brilliant, but a lot better than I expected, as it turns out.

As you can see, the haze over London was pretty awful. Even with the naked eye it was difficult to see much. I did run it through Photoshop to try to make the best of it.

I saw it from the Detonator ride at Thorpe Park, roughly 21 miles away on the edge of the city. Could just see it through the haze. (30 St Mary Axe was clearer despite being smaller and further away)

Here's a few other images from Friday. No great art, but they're interesting details.

The base of the north side of the tower with an angle that's opened up since the bus station roof was demolished

Backpack, Gates 2 and 3 (which now seems more or less redundant) and that wall under construction at the eastern end of the site
