IngMarco July 28th, 2011, 11:49 AM When the floor level of the Shard reaches the height of the core, then it will be T/O or not yet? As far as I know, it will still rise above the core. madsidsav July 28th, 2011, 12:59 PM My overall impression from visiting it yesterday was that it was not overbearing at all and looked bright and vibrant even though it was an overcast day. I don't get all these nimby's complaining about the tall buildings going up in London. I think the people concerned about preserving London's historical beauty should be more concerned with giving the upper part of St. Pauls Cathedral a good hosing down to make it nice and shiny. Besides, London is a city of contrasts, both in it's multiculturalism and it's architecture. Buildings such as the Shard and (hopefully) the 3 spires project will enhance this. London's nickname should be city of contrasts. PortoNuts July 28th, 2011, 03:12 PM When the floor level of the Shard reaches the height of the core, then it will be T/O or not yet? I think it will have 72 'usable' floors but 87 overall floors. People said the era of tall buildings was "over" after 9/11. They said that there wouldn't be any more skyscrapers after the economic crisis began in 2008. Somehow British brands, in clothing, shoes, design etc, are far better and trendier than any other country on this planet and I mean that, being a female and in love with fashions and brands etc, off course Italians or French or even Scandinavians can come up with great stuff, but really when you encounter the British stuff, you are in love FOREVER and their impact is long lasting. Now we talk about architecture, this tower is really going to be a worldwide known and widely recognized symbol and icon for the city of London! Just look at its scale and its perfect beauty. "She" will steal the show certainly next year when Olympic 2012 comes to UK and to London and will be an aw-inspiring structure. On my top 3 list. As Eiffel Tower is France, Shard will be London! the new London .. :D Great job and my deepest respect to those who build it. cybertect July 30th, 2011, 05:14 PM This is not good guys, I am not inclined to believe this wholeheartedly but this is a rather worrying story!http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/apr/20/gherkin-architect-london-skyscraper Says Ken Shuttleworth, the man whose architectural firm, Make, just got planning permission for a 54 storey residential tower in the centre of Croydon... :) http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=449575&page=11 PortoNuts July 30th, 2011, 06:10 PM If demand keeps growing they should go upwards. anthonySE1 July 31st, 2011, 01:57 PM http://i51.tinypic.com/2a5dgro.jpg http://i53.tinypic.com/2ld91km.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/33mlf88.jpg http://i51.tinypic.com/20qjac9.jpg http://i53.tinypic.com/eze5c.jpg http://i53.tinypic.com/97iq6b.jpg Eastern37 July 31st, 2011, 02:07 PM ^^ Great pics  Draegen July 31st, 2011, 02:35 PM Do skyscrapers usually grow arms? KillerZavatar July 31st, 2011, 02:40 PM Do skyscrapers usually grow arms? the shard is a transformer, oh shit - SO143 July 31st, 2011, 03:12 PM LOL Guys you are comparing apples and oranges... Paris after Baron Haussman reconstruction is essentially a planned city and they rely on preserving old architecture too much. London is exact opposite and the same is Eiffel tower and Shard. You cannot compare that, it´s nearly as absurd as Supertall World Cup finals (Petronas x CB). What Charlotte said is that The Shard will become an iconic tower (for London of course) like what Tour Eiffel in Paris is. She didn't say that these towers are comparable in terms of architecture, attractiveness or charismatic etc etc. Well, whether people like it or not it will become a recognizable landmark for "London". http://www.theplacelondon.com/media/19062/location.theshard.jpg http://the-shard.com/media/10301/landing_shard.jpg EuropeanChancellor July 31st, 2011, 07:26 PM LOL now the skyscrapers can grow arms, next generation supertalls will be able to jerk off :lol: xJamaax July 31st, 2011, 08:14 PM LOL now the skyscrapers can grow arms, next generation supertalls will be able to jerk off :lol: :hilarious SO143 July 31st, 2011, 08:44 PM by fusedforces http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6148/5994042745_6380cb4dd8_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fusedforces/5994042745/) by fusedforces (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fusedforces/5994042745/) PortoNuts July 31st, 2011, 11:06 PM by chest. http://web.me.com/benveasey/_MG_4497.jpg http://web.me.com/benveasey/_MG_4484.jpg http://web.me.com/benveasey/_MG_4490.jpg PortoNuts July 31st, 2011, 11:09 PM by potto. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7363/shard1of2.jpg PortoNuts August 1st, 2011, 02:14 AM by The Shard Baby. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6008/5991126936_220a53c0af_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theshardbaby2/5991126936/) shard today-30.7.2011 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theshardbaby2/5991126936/) by The Shard Baby 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/theshardbaby2/), on Flickr PortoNuts August 1st, 2011, 03:16 AM by tompagenet on Flickr. http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1360/5995671112297b9c4dc7b1.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompagenet/5995671112/sizes/l/in/photostream/ Actinium870 August 1st, 2011, 03:22 AM It`s so pretty!!! PortoNuts August 7th, 2011, 08:10 AM London Bridge Quarter Public Realm Redevelopment Hits New Milestone Many of London Bridge Station's 350,000 daily passengers are now enjoying dramatically improved concourse facilities as a major milestone was reached last weekend in London Bridge Quarter's creation of a 21st century public realm around one of the capital's key transport hubs. Congestion for departing and arriving passengers has now been eased with the completion of 42 new ticket barriers by Cubic Transportation Systems, the transportation segment of Cubic Corporation /quotes/zigman/223833/quotes/nls/cub CUB -8.71% . The new ticket barriers represent a 40 percent improvement on the old structure. In addition, the concourse's new glass roof, which links to the Shard, has been installed and much of the old station roof has been removed giving passengers a feel for what the new terminus will feel like and the additional light it will attract. At the same time the new stone flooring continues to be installed for completion in May 2012. The environment under the Shard's glass ceiling will mean that the gateline is visually minimized. To ensure that customers continue to flow through the station, overhead directional displays will be added later in the year to maintain the flow between trains and the underground system. The gateline supports both magnetic and Oyster ticket checking capability. Although Cubic has been involved with the London Bridge (Shard) redevelopment project since September 2008, its critical tasks of removing the old and implementing the new ramp-less gateline were completed overnight on July 31, 2011 for a seamless transition for customers. These improvements are part of LBQ's GBP 50 million transformation of the station concourse and bus station, and creation of a new public piazza that links The Place, a 430,000 square foot headquarters office building currently under construction, to the iconic mixed-use Shard tower. In addition, the Shard will deliver much-needed modern retail facilities at its base facing out onto the station concourse, and new escalators from the public piazza will link to a new underground retail mall. A total of about 12,000 square feet of new retail space is being created. The project team led by Sellar Property, LBQ's developer, is using innovative thinking to complete the station concourse transformation while minimizing passengers' disruption and inconvenience. This includes constructing a new station roof above the old roof, which is being used as a working platform, thereby significantly reducing both impact on passengers and building time. The station concourse and a majority of the public realm works will be completed in time for next year's Olympics. Practical completion of the Shard will be the end of May 2012, while The Place will be completed in April 2013. ... http://www.marketwatch.com/story/london-bridge-quarter-public-realm-redevelopment-hits-new-milestone-2011-08-05?reflink=MW_news_stmp PortoNuts August 7th, 2011, 03:21 PM by Supertall Robbo. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6003/6017099509_0cfe865014_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017099509/) The Shard London Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017099509/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6002/6017652224_b129fd138d_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017652224/) The Shard London Bridge 2 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017652224/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6136/6017108243_0b77899030_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017108243/) Central London Skyline from Dulwich (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017108243/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6017/6017110733_26a73937b5_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017110733/) Shard London Bridge + City of London (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017110733/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6121/6017665704_0cd89f8999_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017665704/) The Shard London Bridge 4 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017665704/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6012/6017121551_13a643fa1c_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017121551/) City of London from Brockwell Park (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017121551/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6008/6017678630_26047bb619_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017678630/) Central London skyline 3 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017678630/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6131/6017682726_f9655fc4b5_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017682726/) City of London from Brockwell Park 3 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017682726/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6011/6017136887_b4b552c545_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017136887/) Horizontal London Skyline from Brockwell Park (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017136887/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6134/6017134441_592ce57044_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017134441/) City of London from Brockwell park (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017134441/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6010/6017139587_8244a8b325_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017139587/) Full London Skyline from Brockwell Park (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017139587/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6027/6017141839_cbe556d88e_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017141839/) City of London from Brixton (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66157138@N08/6017141839/) by Supertall robbo 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/66157138@N08/), on Flickr PortoNuts August 7th, 2011, 03:28 PM by Nightjar. http://i55.tinypic.com/2945ov4.jpg Delo August 7th, 2011, 04:26 PM From this afternoon while I was walking over Tower Bridge.. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6128/6014873779_fda77c9482_o.jpg HDR? lumberjack August 7th, 2011, 05:04 PM Yes HDR to bring up the light levels as it was getting rather dark. Firstly, slipform gives a pretty rough finish compared to jumpform. It's a trade off between finish and speed. Secondly, it is likely that the two thin columns are only temporary works and will be removed later. It looks like the core has slimmed down at the previous floor and these two columns will have been needed to support the existing rig on the final lift rather than reducing the size of the rig, which would be pointless for a floor or two. As you said Bestbud, they're only purpose was to support the slipform rig. http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy165/scalatrava/slip.jpg Tubeman August 11th, 2011, 12:07 AM Little reminder not to abuse thread tags thanks AUTOTHRILL August 11th, 2011, 03:23 AM ^^ yeah saw the 'boring glass pyramid' and 'better than paris' ones, is there no way to track who tagged them there? :1 SO143 August 11th, 2011, 08:43 AM "Bring It On" http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy165/scalatrava/ShardSpire.jpg The Shard Baby August 11th, 2011, 10:50 AM Latest diagram: http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6190/6031342549_6692f3d968_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theshardbaby2/6031342549/) shard diagram-10.8.2011 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theshardbaby2/6031342549/) by The Shard Baby 2 (http://www.flickr.com/people/theshardbaby2/), on Flickr Mossy22 August 11th, 2011, 02:37 PM Some recent shots of Flickr: This first one really shows how dominant it is :) http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6200/6029216553_258ed7d717_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattoshashin/6029216553/) Class 465 (maybe) at Cannon Street Station (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattoshashin/6029216553/) by mattomatto (http://www.flickr.com/people/mattoshashin/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6187/6028154325_af9480c8b5_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/yorkshirestacked_uk/6028154325/) Summery Trinity Square Gardens (http://www.flickr.com/photos/yorkshirestacked_uk/6028154325/) by yorkshire stacked (http://www.flickr.com/people/yorkshirestacked_uk/), on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6075/6024917665_941b02654f_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rusdaddy/6024917665/) the shard at London Bridge Railway Station (LBG) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rusdaddy/6024917665/) by rusdaddy (http://www.flickr.com/people/rusdaddy/), on Flickr msl1 August 11th, 2011, 02:58 PM :D http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/08/shard1.jpg http://cache.gawker.com One my favourite things about this tower is how the facets and sides don't meet at the top. It's like London's Eiffel Tower, a magnificent landmark sitting alone and attracting attention. The funny thing though is that people on this forum always speak about "cheating" skyscrapers, and this is one of them since the upper quarter of it is unoccupied space and masts. http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/08/shard1.jpg erbse August 12th, 2011, 01:46 PM While we're talking about the upper part... Will there be some public space? An observation deck, café or something? Would be really cool up there. droneriot August 12th, 2011, 01:59 PM There'll be an observation deck. -edit- (Source: Culwulla's diagrams) Newcastle Guy August 12th, 2011, 02:53 PM The funny thing though is that people on this forum always speak about "cheating" skyscrapers, and this is one of them since the upper quarter of it is unoccupied space and masts. http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/08/shard1.jpg Not really, the space is used for plant and cooling. It's required for the building to work. One Canada Square for example is a good parallel, it is always counted to 235m but the pyramid on top is plant, not office. I don't have a problem with spires if they actually part of the design. It's onw you get something like the Pentominium, which had a 100m stick placed on top (now removed from the design) just so Dubai could try to claim tallest residential building over the Chicago spire. I'd say there's a big difference between that type of spire (New York Times Tower and Heron Tower being other examples) and the type of spire the Shard has.
