When the floor level of the Shard reaches the height of the core, then it will be T/O or not yet?

As far as I know, it will still rise above the core.

My overall impression from visiting it yesterday was that it was not overbearing at all and looked bright and vibrant even though it was an overcast day.

I don't get all these nimby's complaining about the tall buildings going up in London. I think the people concerned about preserving London's historical beauty should be more concerned with giving the upper part of St. Pauls Cathedral a good hosing down to make it nice and shiny. Besides, London is a city of contrasts, both in it's multiculturalism and it's architecture. Buildings such as the Shard and (hopefully) the 3 spires project will enhance this. London's nickname should be city of contrasts.

I think it will have 72 'usable' floors but 87 overall floors.

Yeah wouldn't it have to considering it comes to a point (a shard) at the very top?

Why would developers spend money on a public hospital just to make it 'pretty' and why that hospital specifically? That would be very controversial. The NHS is the one who has to take action.

The Shard looks gorgeous. I snapped some nice pictures from the top of the Eye.

People said the era of tall buildings was "over" after 9/11. They said that there wouldn't be any more skyscrapers after the economic crisis began in 2008. Just give it time, and people will want to build again. I think it's human nature to want to create the magnificent instead of the mundane.

Because the sheer ugliness of Guys is damaging to the image of the Shard... I'm pretty sure as a tenant in the Shard I wouldn't want to look out of the window at that thing after paying so much money.

I'm sure they could come to some sort of deal to partially fund a reclad of the hospital, after all... the building of the Shard and other planned highrises is supposed to signify "regeneration" .. that includes the hospital.

The thing is the local council have already agreed on a reclad for Guys - unfortunately what they've gone for is a nasty cheap mess.

Would be great if the Shard developers stepped in and agreed to subsidize a better looking reclad.

Londeners have always been trend setters, in fact the British people have always been trend setters. Somehow British brands, in clothing, shoes, design etc, are far better and trendier than any other country on this planet and I mean that, being a female and in love with fashions and brands etc, off course Italians or French or even Scandinavians can come up with great stuff, but really when you encounter the British stuff, you are in love FOREVER and their impact is long lasting.

Now we talk about architecture, this tower is really going to be a worldwide known and widely recognized symbol and icon for the city of London! Just look at its scale and its perfect beauty. "She" will steal the show certainly next year when Olympic 2012 comes to UK and to London and will be an aw-inspiring structure. On my top 3 list.

As Eiffel Tower is France, Shard will be London! the new London .. :D

Great job and my deepest respect to those who build it.

LOL Guys you are comparing apples and oranges... Paris after Baron Haussman reconstruction is essentially a planned city and they rely on preserving old architecture too much. London is exact opposite and the same is Eiffel tower and Shard. You cannot compare that, it´s nearly as absurd as Supertall World Cup finals (Petronas x CB).

What Charlotte said is that The Shard will become an iconic tower (for London of course) like what Tour Eiffel in Paris is.

She didn't say that these towers are comparable in terms of architecture, attractiveness or charismatic etc etc.

Well, whether people like it or not it will become a recognizable landmark for "London".

The Shard

Progress Update

Duration: to Spring 2012

Main Core and Spire

Spire steelwork from level 72 is planned to start in late September of this year. The Spire is constructed in pre-assembled modular units. Dry runs are currently being carried out at Severs Factory in North Yorkshire to confirm and being demonstrated to the Client and Network Rail.

Post tensioned concrete works

Floors are poured up to Level 65 and continue typically on a weekly cycle up to level 69

External cladding and internal finishes

The external glass cladding is progressing well to all elevations and has reached Level 47 on the main tower. The target is for the building to be fully weather tight by end of this year.

Steelwork

Steelwork to the external Plant Rooms on the Backpack Roof continues.

Cranes

TC1 located on the top of the main core is now dismantled.

TC7 is now installed, cantilevered out at level 56 and beyond to install the spire and remaining higher PT floors. The crane cab is currently at a height of 270m, It will climb further to it’s final height of 282m.

There is a further crane TC8 sitting on top of the concrete core to the Backpack, which will remain to October 2011 following completion of the backpack plant rooms.

London Bridge Quarter Public Realm Redevelopment Hits New Milestone

Many of London Bridge Station's 350,000 daily passengers are now enjoying dramatically improved concourse facilities as a major milestone was reached last weekend in London Bridge Quarter's creation of a 21st century public realm around one of the capital's key transport hubs.

Congestion for departing and arriving passengers has now been eased with the completion of 42 new ticket barriers by Cubic Transportation Systems, the transportation segment of Cubic Corporation /quotes/zigman/223833/quotes/nls/cub CUB -8.71% . The new ticket barriers represent a 40 percent improvement on the old structure. In addition, the concourse's new glass roof, which links to the Shard, has been installed and much of the old station roof has been removed giving passengers a feel for what the new terminus will feel like and the additional light it will attract. At the same time the new stone flooring continues to be installed for completion in May 2012.

The environment under the Shard's glass ceiling will mean that the gateline is visually minimized. To ensure that customers continue to flow through the station, overhead directional displays will be added later in the year to maintain the flow between trains and the underground system.

The gateline supports both magnetic and Oyster ticket checking capability. Although Cubic has been involved with the London Bridge (Shard) redevelopment project since September 2008, its critical tasks of removing the old and implementing the new ramp-less gateline were completed overnight on July 31, 2011 for a seamless transition for customers.

These improvements are part of LBQ's GBP 50 million transformation of the station concourse and bus station, and creation of a new public piazza that links The Place, a 430,000 square foot headquarters office building currently under construction, to the iconic mixed-use Shard tower.

In addition, the Shard will deliver much-needed modern retail facilities at its base facing out onto the station concourse, and new escalators from the public piazza will link to a new underground retail mall. A total of about 12,000 square feet of new retail space is being created.

The project team led by Sellar Property, LBQ's developer, is using innovative thinking to complete the station concourse transformation while minimizing passengers' disruption and inconvenience. This includes constructing a new station roof above the old roof, which is being used as a working platform, thereby significantly reducing both impact on passengers and building time.

The station concourse and a majority of the public realm works will be completed in time for next year's Olympics. Practical completion of the Shard will be the end of May 2012, while The Place will be completed in April 2013.

Firstly, slipform gives a pretty rough finish compared to jumpform. It's a trade off between finish and speed.

Secondly, it is likely that the two thin columns are only temporary works and will be removed later. It looks like the core has slimmed down at the previous floor and these two columns will have been needed to support the existing rig on the final lift rather than reducing the size of the rig, which would be pointless for a floor or two. (But I could be wrong)

Looking at the WSP Shard Brochure it looks like the columns will be removed. As you said Bestbud, they're only purpose was to support the slipform rig.

One my favourite things about this tower is how the facets and sides don't meet at the top. It gives that feeling that it can go on forever - that it has that potential of never meeting…but feels like it might at some point in the future. Kind of like the God giving life to Adam at the Sistine Chapel….!

I agree, but it is also the shape.. At the pic above here, it also looks taller. :)

Absolutely stunning.

It's like London's Eiffel Tower, a magnificent landmark sitting alone and attracting attention.

The funny thing though is that people on this forum always speak about "cheating" skyscrapers, and this is one of them since the upper quarter of it is unoccupied space and masts.

While we're talking about the upper part... Will there be some public space? An observation deck, café or something? Would be really cool up there.

There'll be an observation deck.

Not really, the space is used for plant and cooling. It's required for the building to work. One Canada Square for example is a good parallel, it is always counted to 235m but the pyramid on top is plant, not office.

I don't have a problem with spires if they actually part of the design. It's onw you get something like the Pentominium, which had a 100m stick placed on top (now removed from the design) just so Dubai could try to claim tallest residential building over the Chicago spire. I'd say there's a big difference between that type of spire (New York Times Tower and Heron Tower being other examples) and the type of spire the Shard has.

But the original design had the spire as a large radiator and mech space so the design changed but you can't lop the top off it would look silly. most people would say that a cheating building is more like federation tower it has a massive pole type spire that makes it taller
