Paris is also spread out too with only a a few skyscrapers in La Defense just like any other European city. :)

There were strict restrictions on building heights for a long time in London. It was only really in the late 1960s that tall buildings started to appear - Britain didn't get its first official skyscraper (150m+) until 1980 when Tower 42 was complete, and prior to the new millennium it only had 2 official skyscrapers (Tower 42 and 1 Canada Square). The restrictions have been relaxed considerably, hence the large amount of skyscraper development still going on.
This should explain more. :)

I never realized how short most of London's skyline is. I know it is a big city of almost 8 million people, but I just never realized how spread out it is. Were there laws restricting building heights in the past?

There was a 100m height limit in The City which was finally broken by Tower42, leading to a bizarre and ugly skyline of several 100m tall 1960's towers (3 since demolished: Limebank House, Draper's Gardens and 20 Fenchurch Street).

The few isolated tall buildings which did go up in the 1960's & 70's did nothing to 'sell' skyscrapers to Londoners as they were mostly brutalist, and the hundreds of 'point' blocks of council flats which became synonymous with crime and urban decay didn't help.

The turning point was One Canada Square in Canary Wharf and the subsequent expansion of the estate... followed by The Gherkin. Londoners and most importantly planning departments warmed to high-quality tall buildings, so we've now got our Shard, Heron, Strata soon to be joined by more.

Crane Gives Dizzying Bird's Eye View Of London

Britain's highest ever crane is being put in place to complete London's Shard tower - offering a dramatic bird's eye view of the capital. Workers will use the machine to complete what will be the tallest building in the European Union, near London Bridge.

When fully extended the crane will sit at 1,040ft (317 metres) above ground level - making it more than 20ft taller than the building's eventual peak. The extraordinary piece of equipment will be used to complete the top 23 floors from a total of 95.

The Shard will become the 45th tallest in the world when it is completed in 2012.

Highest Occupied floor... 584m

If you're not into counting spires, the roof height of the shard is 305.78m with a 4m spire.

Not tall? Hell, even 230m is rather tall for London - relative to the rest of the city, the Shard's absolutely enormous!

Newcastle Guy
September 30th, 2011, 01:44 PM
If I recall correctly the highest publicly accessible floor is about 244m. But the top itself is more of a crown than a stick-type spire, much more integral to the design.

It's more like One Canada Square I suppose. I don't think the pyramid on top of that building is open to people, but who the hell would only class it as a 200m building?

As there were a few tourists about taking photos, I thought I'd risk some snaps of the station concourse roof, which is coming along

And, with access under the north side canopy, we have some new angles available, helped by an autumn morning's sunlight. While they're structurally different designs, the station roof and the canopies share a common design language. I love 'em :)

Exactly mate, i have seen lots of them in many SSC threads i reckon they are just jealous of the reputation and potential that London has achieved so far.

They should realize the fact that London is the only city in EU that is building a supertall. Haters gonna hate innit! :ohno:

You won't be able to, the only danger of falling out the Shard is on the plant floors delivering the window cleaner units out the special floor sliding panels. All the rest are erected into the building.

Look at the glass/panels, how crystal clear which is unlike boring stone or brick cladding towers like you see in many European & in some poor Asian cities.

I'm pretty sure that the tip of the crane (now that it's been raised) can now be spotted from almost every corner in London.

BTW, will the height of the Building be something similar to where the tip of the crane is now standing?

"News Story"

The UK’s tallest tower crane, provided by Select at the ‘Shard of Glass’ project in London, was raised to its highest position on the building this weekend, and has commenced lifting work for the structure’s final spire section.
When fully extended, Tower Crane 7 (TC7) will sit 317m (1,040 ft) above ground level - seven metres taller than the building’s eventual highest point. In a complex operation, it was “jumped” into place so as to enable construction of the Shard’s spire to get underway, and take the building to its ultimate 310m height from its present 244m. The spire will form the top 23 floors of the Shard starting at level 72 (the viewing gallery) and rising to level 95. The crane sits on a platform attached to the outside of the building at floor 55, and will lift the 500 tonnes of steel into place over the coming weeks.
Irvine Sellar, chairman of Sellar Property Group, said: “This is another unique milestone in the development of this global iconic landmark building. The Shard is already making a positive impact on London’s skyline and the spire will complement the design of the building and complete a truly stunning piece of architecture.”
Philip Wainwright, Business Unit Leader of Select Plant Hire said: 'The lifting and installation of crane TC7 and subsequent jumping were the culmination of six months of detailed planning. This has been a complicated logistical operation, and we are delighted with its success. The crane sits on a platform to the side of the sloping structure of the Shard, providing a clear sight line to ground level, enabling us to lift materials to the top as safely and efficiently as possible.'
Although 800 separate steel components will make up the spire, sections have been assembled off-site and transported to the Shard, rather than lift individual beams and attach them at height. It is anticipated that the spire will require a total of around 100 crane lifts to raise all of the large floor and facade sections into place.

Sweet

Great picture. I know that view very well having grown up round there - I've tried to photograph it many times in the past but never had a good enough camera, and normal cameras can't easily capture how clearly the eye sees that view.

As a bonus, I can see where I used to live in DuCane court in Balham! :)

I know the white papery stuff is spoiling it a little at the moment but even so I think the floors will create very obvious horizontal lines on the building that aren't really present on the renders, especially at the corners. I'm not getting down on it it's still the best project in Europe I just hope I'm wrong because that render looks amazing.

We need a monument of hope in the age of the Shard

The Shard towers over London, a lean, tapering, thrust to the sky. It's magnificent but it's not kind. The contrast with the Gherkin couldn't be starker. The Gherkin, built in 2003, before the financial crisis, is plump and jolly - a monument to a time of plenty. The Shard tells the story of the new world but there's optimism missing in its sharp narrative.

In these dark days the future is uncertain and we need a monument to inspire hope. After the '87 crash, New York adopted a statue of a raging bull to represent financial hope but I propose that London, not least ad-land, needs a statue of slightly balding man in his late fifties. He doesn't need to look aggressive or triumphant or even saintly, he could just look a bit, well, like someone's dad.

He is your hope. The country is feeling the pinch of the financial crisis and things are set to get worse. But we are not all feeling the pinch equally, we are not all in it together as the government tell us. There is a wealth gap opening up in the country and it's not between north and south or the franchised and the underclass; it's between the generations. Your baby boomer parents have all the money and for them, the party isn't over.

This is a story of luck. The baby boomers were born in a post-war world. They were expected to be the generation that fought the Russians but they ended up riding a wave of good fortune and they sucked up all the wealth. Nobody could imagine the extent to which the babies of the fifties would have it so good.

"Average Baby Boomer" is the title I'm giving my proposed statue, or "Brian", to give him a name. He bought his first house for a ninth of the price his average son paid this year for his average property. His son is in negative equity, having only just got rid of his student debt but "Brian" has made a mint from property. His present mortgage has practically gone but he is one of the baby boomers who bought a second home recently because his son's generation couldn't get the credit to benefit from falling house prices. He and his wife are busy furnishing it.

I would not like to be in that crane, no way. Once inside your basically just hanging 300m? above the ground. I bet it wobbles like hell with the wind. I think I'd have a heart attack.

Once you've climbed the ladder to the top the bit where you have to somehow get inside it must be terrifying....Glad its not my job.
