What shape is this?!

What shape is this?!

Shardy!

In plan it isn't a regular shape at all, it's very facetted - sort of a starburst plan close to an irregular octagon.

As you can see, it's difficult to explain.

Keepon
October 17th, 2011, 04:22 PM
It's a shard shape! And it's quite easy to explain it, just break a window. ;)

Does anyone know if there is a plan to put something in that gap next to the Pinnacle?

The Shard beats the pinnacle on architecture but the Pinnacle looks better location-wise in the London CBD

Weekend bonus pics.

Some pics I took on 5th September on film (Canon T70 with Kodak BW700CN C41 process black and white if anyone's interested).

The vagaries of getting them developed and then scanning them mean they're inevitably tardy compared with digital, but it's fun :)

Nonsense.

London certainly doesn't have as many skyscrapers as other similar sized cities in America and Asia but the ones it does have are of the highest quality, in building materials and build quality.

I've never seen it as lonely or even out of place. Maybe if it was being built on the site of 20Fc, then it would out of place. But as it is, the position is perfect.

The Strata on the other hand, now that's lonely.

looks less dull when it's cleaned, you can kind of see it here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=84714601&postcount=20740). I suspect renders are always going to be a bit shinier than reality will muster

I agree. For goodness sake, it still has the horrid white protective things up on a lot of the windows and is dirty from construction.

Let's just wait until the glass is clean and the white things have all been removed before we start making sweeping judgements about what the cladding looks like.

I personally think the small sections that have already had the white things removed look really good (and will be even better once cleaned), so I'm optimistic about the final effect.

I love dull glass :) for example Bank of America Tower in the heart of New York City

The cladding on the bank of america building is amazing; so many different directions of lines. I love the angles of the glass faces, and the way they join so cleanly, solidly and sharply. Much prefer it to the overhanging pannels that the shard has, which I fear will date quickly and would have been more appropriate architecturally for smaler buildings.

We will need to wait for the top but also for the white paper to be removed and the windows to be cleaned before we see if it works anywhere near as well as the bank of america tower.

SO143
October 31st, 2011, 04:35 PM
I don't know what sort of cladding people are expecting, according to The Shard's Ranzo Piano, the glass/panels are meant to be transparant colour pure glass, not blue nor darker colour like 1WTC for eg. But, let's wait until it's completey done. :)

LED's are nice, you just can't go too crazy with the colors and changing patterns to keep it classy. The inside of my Mini Cooper lights up with LED's and you can pick wild colors, but I keep it a nice deep red.

Certainly, Guangzhou Tower when lit up with rainbow LED's is not classy, but it is very nice when more subtle choices are made.

So true. Those rainbow color schemes that you see sometimes are horrible. Something in between white and yellow/orange or some blueish tint often works best.

Is it at 260 metres then?

It's actually at 261.3m.

The official height of the 78th floor is 259.9m, but the central columns stick above the floor by just over a metre, ready for the next column to be connected on top. This means that the Shard (although uncompleted) is the tallest building in Western Europe - with only those pesky Moscovites to go...

my french is very rusty, but I think: "sorry I was confused with the outher tower. the clone of the AGBAR tower, i don't know the name". = 30 St Mary Axe aka the Gherkin. Which actually opened before AGBAR (and imo is a lot nicer), but I admit I don't know which was designed first

Then, you say you are profoundly vexed(?) and jealous that the brits have built a 300m+ tower opposite an ancient monument, and I think you're asking whether there is political opposition to it?

I don't really know. I think most of the opposition comes from places like English Heritage rather than MPs?

wow thats amazing must be a real rush at the top!

Welcome to SSC!

Without being blase, it's not much different at 75 as it is at 40. You get used to it. Although not for the faint-hearted...

The view is virtually enclosed in the London "bowl" of hills with the exception to the East. The view is probably as far as the M25 in all directions depending on the weather.

It's easier to see the Shard against a clear background than to pick out individual landmarks from the top. However, Wembley, Emirates and the Olympics stadia all stand out. Obviously, there are good views of that domed building near St Pauls tube station, the City and Westminster etc.

The viewing gallery will be a very popular attraction next year and I can see there having to be a time limit to stop it getting crowded!

I'm wondering if the apparent delay at the current spire level was something to do with the installation of the window cleaning arms (or what look like them) on that floor (there were none on the first level of the spire etc).

in European continent the tallest building will be a Mercury City Tower (335m) and Complex Federation (510m)The fact that the Mercury Tower will be the tallest in Europe doesn't contradict to the fact that the Shard will be the tallest in Europe or the Federation Complex will be the tallest. The record holders remain the record holders forever. :) although the records are different.
Since the Mercury Tower construction is very slow now the Shard has a big chance to become the tallest in Europe.

To say something about the shard:
I actually find it kinda dull and simple. And there's something that makes the cladding (at least for me) look cheap. Yeah, it's big, the biggest in Europe... but it's not necessarily a marvel of architecture (at least for me).

I'm inclined to agree with you re the cladding, let's face it steel and glass doesn't make great architecture and it has been used since the 50's on some really god-awful buildings but having said that I still quite like the "Shard" because it's not a box and it's also not one of those latest twisty freaks. Looks good from a distance and of course at night.

its all about sculptural form and structure wrapped with a 'skin'. I think Architects are terrified of being seen as facade designers, or doing anything that might hide the structure behind it. In fact I don't think buildings like this that are designed as sculptural forms primarily, can have anything other than a glass, or uniform facade.

I can't even begin to imagine how this would be clad otherwise. Brick? Something a bit neo-classical? Perhaps some large areas of pastel coloured render? ;)

Well actually I see what you're getting at but if you look at the TransAmerica Building in San Francisco of pyramidal shape you can see that other forms can be used. I'm not suggesting it should be the same as that building just that there are other alternatives.
