Neither 9/11 nor the financial crisis has blunted the urge to build tall
http://im.media.ft.com/content/images/a61407e8-2cd2-11e1-b485-00144feabdc0.img
Cass Gilbert, architect of New York’s Woolworth Building, called skyscrapers “machines for making the land pay”. But skyscrapers were always more about ego than profit.
By the southern end of London Bridge, early 2012 will bring the topping out of the £700m ($1.1bn) Shard, the tallest building in the European Union. Across the Thames, The Pinnacle, the City of London’s own loftiest tower, is being built. This year, the construction was announced in Jeddah of the world record-breaking Kingdom Tower, which at 1km-plus high would top Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
Costly to build, hard to negotiate: why do developers keep trying to go so high? “You have to pay a lot more upfront but you want it to be an iconic design, one that people want to be involved in and one they want to keep,” says Khalid Affara, head of Arab Investments, the group behind the 288 metre Pinnacle. “It means you have guaranteed longevity.”
After aircraft smashed into New York’s Twin Towers a decade ago, there was a moment when it seemed the skyscraper would for ever embody the fear of catastrophe. Yet the Freedom Tower being built beside the Ground Zero site displays the skyscraper’s surprising resilience. The risk for developers is more that by having so much of their ego vested in the project, they forget to pay attention to economic realities.

Actually I think they're focusing more on the glazing of the building, before they put the spire up.

it actually depends on the sky if the sky was blue the cladding would look blue if the sky was grey it too would look grey cause the cladding reflects the light from the sky .

Shard is great. That's obviuos. But I guess that almost every skyscraper that is under construction sucks. That's why you should better wait with your opinion until it's done because it might be different. Of course, we'll see in several years.

I think it's literally where the glass has been cleaned. The tower has gotten very dirty over the course of construction. Once it's finished and polished it'll look truly stunning. Some of the pictures we've had on here show the light reflections to be almost blinding.

burnside December 31st, 2011, 05:28 PM Newcastle, I disagree. Cleaning rigs have been out within the past few weeks, always leaving obviously clean but still translucent glass in their wake. The panels in that photo are completely transparent.
A few of us have speculated the interior surfaces of the skin are protected by an adhesive film. If that's correct, the finished building will shed its slightly murky look as the film is stripped. There must be someone on the project who can confirm interior film - or not.

London's Shard: a 'tower of power and riches' looking down on poverty
Renzo Piano's skyscraper, which will be Europe's tallest building, may provide a shot in the arm for London – or be merely a symbol of Qatari financial muscle
guardian.co.uk, Friday 30 December 2011
The glinting Shard of Glass has become the tallest building in Europe, rising higher than Canary Wharf's main tower, Frankfurt's Commerzbank and the Ostankino television tower in Moscow.
Nice fact checking, Guardian, way to go. And that's besides the 'rich people' point that is summarized by this fella:
"There has been a failure of imagination," said Nick Stanton, a Liberal Democrat and former leader of Southwark council. "There should be something in this building that the community uses on a daily basis instead of just walking around it. There should be something like a library in it …
... Because obviously construction company paying taxes from workers' salaries, equipment etc. just isn't enough. Hell, I have a better suggestion: every new skyscraper should provide free flats for homeless people - like, a third of a whole building - because while you can read all the books online nowadays the homeless keep suffering on the street! A whole new perspective on 'something in this building that the community uses on a daily basis instead of just walking around it' thing.
CompayEE December 31st, 2011, 07:55 PM Hell, I have a better suggestion: every new skyscraper should provide free flats for homeless people - like, a third of a whole building - because while you can read all the books online nowadays the homeless keep suffering on the street! This is not at all about 'homeless people' but about the community. They are not one and the same thing...
"Architecture is not neutral, it celebrates something," he said. "When we built the Pompidou Centre it celebrated rebellion against the idea that culture should be intimidating. The Shard will celebrate community, the sense of the city, the sense of exchange. I think the building will become loved in London because it is not arrogant. Normally towers are not loved because they shut down at 6pm and you have a black glass block. This is not about money or power. It is about surprise and joy."
gunslinger December 31st, 2011, 08:22 PM This is not at all about 'homeless people' but about the community. They are not one and the same thing...
It's the same thing where it matters - getting something for free from developer. Or, in other words, additional tax. Or, in other words again, less incentive to build skyscrapers. Because high-rises are huge and expensive, and if the so-called community expects (on behalf of this politician) a free donut to come with it every time, as a developer I would prefer to cut costs and build low, stay low, generate more revenue per invested pound. (Not that I am a developer.)

I presume the above quote is from Renzo Piano, if so he sure has had a change of heart since designing that bastard Pompidou Centre in Paris, one of THE MOST ARROGANT structures in that beautifuly city. It creates total discord with it's surroundings, I've always harboured a secret desire to blow it up one day, I hate it that much.
At least the Shard is a totally different concept and looks great on London's skyline.

Loved by whom, exactly? And as what? Serving what specific purpose other than hosting corporate seats of financial power (often forbidding in their gloomy self-sufficiency) ?
I don't think that we should look down on public libraries as they are in many ways infinitely preferable to the hermetic corporate blandness that bars virtually everybody (except the likes of themselves) from accessing the architectural masterpiece that happens to host the premises of their business, stance that ultimately no-one benefits from.
At least in Shard's case you will be able, in theory, to book for yourself a weekend for two in Shangri-La and thus enjoy the Shard from within and access the magnificent vistas that it will presumaby offer to the viewer. (Plus there will definitely be a public viewing gallery that will be open to any vagrant, homeless or for that matter filthy rich/upper class person who will pay the modicum entry fee)

The Pompidou Centre was 'spawned' by the specific cultural/political/aesthetic constraints of a decade (i.e. the seventies) that we often fail to properly (and retroactively) understand. I also happen to dislike the Beabourg Centre but I am also aware that it belongs to a decade that I am not entitled to retroactively lash out at simply because, biologically speaking, I did not belong to it...

Racing into the Sky
For years, people in London took little interest in architecture, and it seemed like anyone could build whatever they liked. Sellar and Piano came up with their idea before the 9/11 attacks made many scared of skyscrapers, before the financial markets began to stagger and long before angry young people in Britain turned to arson. Indeed, the concept for the Shard concept was born in an entirely different era. In terms of atmosphere and aesthetics, the building is still living somewhere around the year 2000.
Still, the Shard isn't the type of kitschy construction now seen in cities from Moscow to Shanghai. It is sculptural, but not sentimental. Of course, its windows reflect the passing clouds, which fits with Piano's concept of poetry. But on the many days with dismal weather, the building's glass panes will simply mirror the gray London sky.
Yet nothing -- whether architectural lyricism or Sellar's commentary -- can hide the fact that, at its heart, the building represents a display of power. Now more than ever, tall buildings serve as status symbols for European cities. No one seems to seriously care anymore about preserving historic building or paying attention to lines of sight or the relative heights of buildings.
After almost 40 years, Paris has also decided to allow high-rises again, at least at the edge of the city's downtown area, where the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron has received permission to build a 180-meter-high (590-foot-high) pyramid. In Switzerland, Basel is getting its own skyscraper, while Zurich has the Prime Tower at 126 meters (413 feet) and is considering building something akin to a high-rise-ringed Central Park just outside the city. Meanwhile, in Barcelona, French architect Jean Nouvel is building one of Spain's tallest buildings, a 142-meter (466-foot) structure meant to evoke a fountain.
But London has outdone them all. Its recently completed Heron Tower, on the other side of the Thames, stands at 202 meters (663 feet), and the Shard makes the leap to over 300 meters.
Are Skyscrapers Passé?
Architecture critics such as Andres Lepik say skyscrapers built solely for the sake of height are completely outdated dinosaurs. People used to marvel at them the way they do when the see a flashy car on the street. But cities grow, and if they don't want to continually expand into the surrounding countryside, they're forced to expand upward instead. But, all too often, these tall buildings look almost completely out of place owing to their location, their size and even their appearance.
When asked how it feels to alter the skyline of a metropolis like London, Piano notes that if an architect makes a mistake, people will see it for a long, long time.
Sellar, on the other hand, takes a more relaxed view. No one else will be able to top him in London -- at least as long as no one is allowed to build a structure above 1,000 feet (305 meters). Or course, Sellar has found a way to get around this restriction himself. By putting the base of the Shard in a depression, it will technically be 1,016-feet tall.

You'll have to complain to this German lady called Ulrike Knöfel for having stated that (she is the author of the Spiegel article that I quote)
I happen to disagree with her as I find Mercury City quite cutting edge and not kitschy (for the later we must look for to US cities like Las Vegas)

It is infinite in space, finite in time, yea i kno!
Edit: i also know that we call it infinite in space, but the only thing we know for real is that the non-observable universe spans about 48 billion lightyears minimum (yes, Hubble-style!)

Oh no, the Shard is yet again besmirched by nasty architectural 'critics'
writes Owen Heatherley:
"Accordingly, if you look at the current south London skyline, the ludicrously overpowering, overscaled, overpriced Shard is a skyscraper in its purest form; the Guy's hospital tower, next to it, is a mere high-rise. It's made of concrete, it's inexpensive and, worst of all, it serves a useful function."

SO143 January 14th, 2012, 04:33 AM Londoners are proud of the Shard, which will be Western Europe's tallest building when it is completed later this year - but a new report may force the capital to swallow its pride.
http://i.thisislondon.co.uk/i/pix/2012/01/skyscraper-415.jpg
It finds an "unhealthy correlation" between the building of skyscrapers and subsequent financial crashes, identifying nearly 20 cases in the past 150 years where architectural exuberance has preceded an economic fall. The report by Barclays Capital cites nearly 20 famous examples around the world, ranging from the Empire State Building in New York to Dubai's Burj Khalifa.
Report author Andrew Lawrence said the pattern appears to hold in London. He cites the completion of Tower 42 in 1979, ahead of the early 1980s recession, of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf in 1991 amid another downturn and the Millennium Tower in 2009, in the midst of the current crisis as examples.
Lawrence concludes that with China and India currently building dozens of towers, it may be time to think twice about investing in emerging markets.

Very good point that, I would totally agree. The good news is that the "Shard" is one of the more impressive buildings that got underway before the recent economic demise so it had to be finished, the even better news however, in my opinion, is that dozens of freak egocentic monstrosities were shelved, hopefully forever, as they could easily have ruined London and many other cities, forever.

matt_12 January 17th, 2012, 11:05 PM The good thing is that Guy's Hospital (which looks horrible) kinda vanishes now that the Shard has almost reached its final height! Shard adds so much to the skyline.
tim1807 January 17th, 2012, 11:10 PM The thing is that in nearly every picture taken with the Shard in it the Guy's hospital is also include.:(
matt_12 January 18th, 2012, 03:27 AM but Hospital looks way tinier and insignificant.. compared to before at least.
