Qatari's own 80%.

i just skimmed the entire article and didn't find any line that indicates "the shhard would be rising higher than the ostankino television tower in moscow" perhaps i missed it? can you quote that sentence pls?
Qatari investors bought 80% of the project in January 2008, when it was valued at £2bn.
the price is insane according to the article. what is the total value of the shard? is it really worth £2bn ($3.16bn)?

Of course, it's the 2nd paragraph:
The glinting Shard of Glass has become the tallest building in Europe, rising higher than Canary Wharf's main tower, Frankfurt's Commerzbank and the Ostankino television tower in Moscow.
parsonsnose February 6th, 2012, 02:41 AM The ostankino television tower in Moscow is 540 mtrs tall, plus there are other towers there taller than the shard so the article is wrong if it says that.

LOL indeed... what I was thinking was "how would it feel to leave your house early every morning heading for work or else and then face this huge beauty?" Certainly many will not even consider it as a beauty or like it, but to us, it is and in fact, it will make my day every day the moment I look at it!

Frankus Maximus February 7th, 2012, 05:57 PM only 80%? i thought the entire project was fully funded by the foreign tycoons form the uae, so who owns the rest of 20%?
Irvine Sellar owns 20%, the Shard was his brainchild from the start. He sold 80% to the Qataris in order to raise the finance.

eomer February 11th, 2012, 10:02 PM Great building and great pics.
Renzo Piano is a good architect even if he is a bit...original (his first building was Pompidou Center in Paris...)
Jex7844 February 11th, 2012, 11:00 PM All the above pics are great. I do like the Shard but I'm still crossed with its cladding though...
Eomer, I agree with you regarding Piano's originality...actually I personally think that Centre Pompidou is an eyesore, doesn't blend in with Paris's architecture. I can't wait to have a more accurate idea of the new parisian T.G.I by Piano which is to be unveiled this month.
SO143 February 11th, 2012, 11:09 PM Pompidou is a fantastic building with an interesting architecture but it is not suitable for the atmosphere and environment of paris. but it would work well in a city like london or new york. another problem with that building is that it is not thoroughly maintained though :ohno:

I don't think that so many big companies will be moving over there, especially ones from the financial market, they still prefer be at West End and at the City.

According to the plans there won't be any more new skyscrapers for The City other than the ones currently planned. The City is quite historic, simultaneously the oldest and the newest part of London, with several protected viewing corridors to the Cathedral, The Tower and Tower Bridge to name a few - in other words it's now full. From now on the skyscrapers will have to move east into the East End, or south to Southwark, which is now anchored by The Shard.
TutConr February 12th, 2012, 02:26 PM Beautiful tower. London has always been a comparatively low rise city apart from Canary Wharf. Hope to see many more buildings like this in London.

Yes, but I really don't trust that big companies that already are based at City and West End will be moving into The Shard.

Ember-To-Ashes February 13th, 2012, 01:29 PM Haven't posted on here in a few years but been following the Shard progress for a while now. Are they just going to leave the parts at the top open to the elements? Those triangular "missing" pieces are there to make it resemble some 13 'shards of glass' leaning together to form a kind of 1000 ft tall multi sided pyramid, some of the other 'Shards' are already topped off much lower down.

I was wondering the exact same thing... anyone know if these levels are sealed at the top or what is going on? In the photos of current construction as well as renders they appear exposed...

B890bT February 13th, 2012, 03:28 PM I think I am right in saying those exposed parts make up some of the 15 radiator floors in which the buildings heating system is centred, the public viewing bit makes up 4 floors all of which are inside and fully cladded as far as I know
MontanaGuy February 13th, 2012, 04:46 PM I also really like the bold design of this project but as others have mentioned above I'm also confused about this triangular shape of glass that has already been installed which looks like it's going to be cut off too short judging by the rendering instead of soaring above the top like the other pieces of glass appear to do. That just seems like a very odd thing to do and it makes me wonder what the top of this building is going to look like when it's completed.
mogwai83 February 13th, 2012, 04:59 PM the radiators idea was shelved in development, the building will feature a conventional chiller & DFU system. The top deck will be exposed to the elements as the image suggests. I' don't see why it couldn't be used as part of the observation levels, obviously would have to be secured against jumpers and closed during adverse weather... open 3 days a year then?

Look at the render above, S0143's post. The completed triangular section is the shortest part, there is only a small 3 metre tip to go on the end. But the other three sides will rise the extra 15-20 metres.

cameronpaul February 14th, 2012, 08:32 PM has southwark become the centre of london now?
No Southwark is not and never will be the "centre" of London. London actually has two centres, the area around the Bank of England is the business centre (major banks, insurance companies etc) and the area around Regent/Oxford St is the commercial, (shops, theatres, restaurants etc.), centre.
DysonSphere February 14th, 2012, 08:44 PM No Southwark is not and never will be the "centre" of London. London actually has two centres, the area around the Bank of England is the business centre (major banks, insurance companies etc) and the area around Regent/Oxford St is the commercial, (shops, theatres, restaurants etc.), centre.
Officially the centre of Greater London is on the Southern edge of Trafalgar Square at the junction of Whitehall where the statue of King Charles I now stands. A plaque can be found on the floor behind the statue stating that mileage distances on road signage are still measured from this point.
The City Of London is an area of just over a Square Mile, roughly between Tower Bridge in the East (But not including the Tower of London) Chancery Lane in the West and an Arc covering Smithfield Market, The Barbican, The Broadgate area and Aldgate to the North. It's centre is roughly at the Guildhall Square at the north end of King Street.
There has been a River crossing at the approximate site of London Bridge for 2000 years and the area to the south of the bridge, Borough, has been occupied for much of that time. The Bankside has been an area to visit in the evening for centuries, Shakespeare had a theatre or two there. Southwark, the Borough and Bankside areas in particular, might not be the centre, but its close.
tim1807 February 14th, 2012, 08:53 PM ^^ I think you mean the literal centerpiece, and they mean the city centre where the business and the shopping area is.
DysonSphere February 14th, 2012, 09:22 PM ^^ I think you mean the literal centerpiece, and they mean the city centre where the business and the shopping area is.
In that case you will be arguing about that for weeks. Canary Wharf, Business. Knightsbridge, shopping. Harley Street, medical. Shaftesbury Avenue, theatre. London has more centers than you can count.

PortoNuts February 15th, 2012, 09:54 PM Fläkt Woods will supply the ventilation requirements for the Shard
Fläkt Woods has won a contract to supply the ventilation requirements for London’s new prestigious landmark building, The Shard, which is currently under construction, next to London Bridge Station in Southwark.
Once completed in 2012, at 310m in height, it will become Western Europe’s tallest habitable building with 72 occupiable floors, equivalent to 95 floors in total. Mace, the international consultancy and construction company is the principal contractor for The Shard, which is being developed by Sellar, have charged HVAC specialists Gardner & Co with the challenge of meeting the unique ventilation requirements of the building. Working together with Fläkt Woods, the project brief outlined a range of specialist venting JM fans, providing emergency smoke ventilation as well as some smaller general extract fans
Following on from the new fabrication processes pioneered by Mace, a prefabrication strategy was implemented to minimize both site installation & the amount of materials on site. Flakt Woods and Gardner & Co design teams worked together to design a range of fire rated enclosures which were skid mounted & pre-fabricated at the Company’s Colchester Works using the market leading Flameshield range of fire rated ductwork.
The project specific fan assemblies are designed to operate both as general extract, and if required, emergency smoke extract preventing fire smoke from entering escape routes.

bandy February 15th, 2012, 11:17 PM property website 'Homes & Property' is claiming they believe one or two of the high luxury apartments situated near the top of the building could fetch around £36 million!!!
The website writes:
The Shard has 78 storeys and will comprise a five-star Shangri-La Hotel with spa, 27 floors of offices, three floors of restaurants, a public viewing gallery and prestige apartments on floors 53 to 65.
When launched later this year, the sky-high homes are expected to reach similarly towering prices — almost certainly well in excess of £4,000 per square foot.
With more than 6,000sq ft of double-height internal space on average, each will be several times bigger than a typical semi-detached house.
Two of the apartments span entire floors, three are duplexes and seven are "simplexes" (a new-fangled name for huge lateral flats).
The homes will each have their own lift from street level and feature enclosed winter gardens. Prices for some of the flats could top £36 million.

Costa&Ribeiro February 17th, 2012, 04:54 AM property website 'Homes & Property' is claiming they believe one or two of the high luxury apartments situated near the top of the building could fetch around £36 million!!!
This is bullshit! :storm:
The Shard's best apartments will go for less than GBP 3.000/sq. ft, not even close the GBP 4.000/sq. ft.
I would pay something near GBP 2.500/sq. ft, nothing more.

It depends. The tallest tower is the Eiffel tower, since the Shard is not a tower. The tallest true building is the Shard. Besides, the Shard's roof is taller than the Eiffel Tower's, it's only the Eiffel tower's antenna that makes it taller. :tiasd:

No, not a chance. Perhaps on an extremely clear day you could see the Channel from the Shard, but not all the way to Paris. And from the Eiffel tower, you can only see about 80km. I think anything over 300km the curvature of the earth starts to take effect unless you are thousands of feet up.

Hi,
if my calculations are correct  then the tip of the Shard should be 5.945 km high to see the tip of the Eifel Tower.
I assumed a perfect sphere for the earth, distance 340 km (radiant), radius 6378 km, and that both towers are on the same longitude...

PortoNuts February 22nd, 2012, 08:31 PM Tower of Babel: Language no barrier for Shard workers
It will be finished in time for the Olympics by a "Team Shard" almost as diverse as competitors in the Games.
London's tallest skyscraper - all 1,017 feet of it when completed in June - is a testament to international cooperation with workers from Albania to Australia, Bulgaria to Brazil contributing to its construction. Between 1,300 and 1,600 employees have been involved in building the £400 million tower.
Two-thirds of the workers are British and a further 20 per cent from other European countries, including Lithuania and Romania as well as France and Holland. The remaining 15 per cent are from all over the world.
Bart Lemmens, 26, is a quality assurance engineer from the Netherlands who joined the Shard team in June 2010. "While working in the Middle-East on a very large construction project I saw a picture of the Shard and I knew I had to get involved as it is one of the most interesting construction projects at this time," he said.
Simona Visinskyte, 23, Ramita Balconyte, 24, and Virginija Daraciene, 37, are all from Lithuania. Simona is an administrator for a logistics company working on the building and has been working at the Shard since May 2010. The other two are catering assistants, as is Russian Irina Pantuykhova.
"I thought maybe I would study here," Ms Visinskyte said. "But I found myself working in construction, and it was interesting seeing how from nothing people build massive skyscrapers."
Australian Tony Veal, 33, is a project manager. "I enjoy looking into the vast changes in history and technological advances over the years that have sculpted this great city," he said.
A spokesman for developer Sellar Property Group said: "There are many languages spoken by people working to build the Shard but this has not presented any issues."
When completed, the Shard will be almost double the height of St Paul's. It will have 44 lifts, offices and a hotel and be topped by a four-floor public viewing gallery. A concourse and a piazza will be finished by next year and will link it to London Bridge station. It has been developed by Irvine Sellar, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and constructed by Mace.

Sorry, of course I meant looks better than Toronto.
It's not all about height. Toronto is just a load of generic glass blocks with the CN tower in the middle, it's really pretty dull.
