I used the Canon 70-300L lens on those close ups and free handed in the day. I also use a wide angle canon 17-40L and the walk about canon 24-105L

hello chest, do you think this camera (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0071L3M56/ref=pe_175391_28842871_pe_epc_dp2) would be much superior to my current nikon d3000? basically i am planning to come to london to take the pics of skylines from far away and in this case my current one can't do a good job.

This may seem like a stupid question but will the open air observation deck be only partially open air? From looking at completed renders of The Shard i am still trying to work out how it can be FULLY open air :?

Not at all - I notice a lot of tourists now taking photos of the shard. I think the glazing makes it look so futuristic but to be fair there's very few cities where such historic architecture can be seen in one 360' turn. The tower of London, the roman wall, tower bridge, the shard and the towers of the city.

You can't demolish a public hospital just because you find it ugly. Besides, it will get a new cladding pretty soon.

I don't think it's any worse looking than tall buildings in any other large City. The fact that it stands on its own with until now little around it makes it stand out more.

Hi all... first post 'n' all that!

Just a few taken on Monday. Not the best pictures but somehow the sheer majesty of the building makes up for that.... what a beast of a skyscraper! She may not be the worlds tallest, but the architecture is truly awesome! Superb addition to an already fantastic London skyline.

Did you know the image of the eye and the pyramid appeared on the dollar bill before the Freemasons* adopted the image. Rather than the much believed other way round.

Also, not a pyramid.

Also, tribute to London's 100s of church spires.

I am a little bit dissapointed with this lower triangle because it doesn't stand out from the background as in the renders does, at least for now.

the colour of the shard changes depending on the weather and light. the panels look crystal clear and irritatingly reflective in a sunny day but it looks pretty dim in a cloudy day.

Interestingly I'm warming to the matted look that occurs during grey days. Nicely understated, but then it definitely comes alive during dramatic lighting in the sky (which is very frequent, London is not constantly grey), a very dynamic tower!

Very cool optical/atmospheric effect this morning.

The sun had burned off an early fog, but left us with these sunrays bouncing off the glazing of The Shard.

It's unfortunate that this building can't be located in a place like Hong Kong or Singapore. Places where it would intergrate better in the surroundings (and where there is more sunlight since this building deserves alot of that). Besides, this building stands out to much in its current location.

Hopefully with the economy picking up somewhat and investment still seeing London as a safe haven it will have some neighbours soon. Three Spires also by Sellar would be a great start.

I agree that they should have stuck with the smaller glass panes like in the renders, but in fact I think it has worked out rather well. On a cloudy day it looks moody and contemplative, but on a sunny day as you can see it is sleek and attractive. I think they got it just right in terms of prominence: in such a position it's hard to make it look flowing and seamless with the skyline without making it rather nothingy, but I think Piano managed it. I also think it would be completely wasted in a cluster, you need to be able to see all of it for the full effect. London is not a city where you can have a huge single cluster, its monuments are spread out over a large area: it has two skyscraper clusters, plus St Paul's, Westminster, Wembley, St George's Wharf and the Telecom tower... a Singapore style megacluster is not right for the old world, so the positioning of the Shard is perfect imo: just close enough so that it can be seen with the other skyscrapers, but in keeping with the spread of London's monuments. In fact it's rather unique for such a huge skyscraper to be so prominent, that's something that makes it completely unique: the only comparable building is the Ryugyong hotel, which is a prime example of the mistakes that the Shard avoided.

As promised, here's some more photos from yesterday, with a few more that I've not posted here to be found in my Shard Gallery (http://www.cybertects.co.uk/gallery2/v/architecture/london/shard/) if you're a glutton for punishment :)

Without any further ado, on to the pics...

Queen Elizabeth Street

The sunrays from the morning were still evident even after noon; here's a closer look (more of that later)

East and North side glazing gaps closed and another panel about to go in

http://i1085.photobucket.com/albums/j427/cybertects/Shard/20120315_0011.jpg

I then hopped on a 343 bus down to the southern end of Borough High Street to grab a few shots of The Shard together with Borough's parish church of St George The Martyr, designed by John Price in 1735.

fail cladding ...

haha! Good joke!

Remember the cladding is filthy, plus there's a layer of plastic film on the inside of each window, on top of that the floors haven't had their fit-outs yet, each floor has nothing to bounce the incoming light off thus making the shard slightly dull looking, you wait till each floor has had its fit-out and the walls and ceilings are painted white, the shard will be transformed.

Notice that all the renders are done on days with a bright blue sky. Nobody ever claimed that the Shard would look the same on an overcast day. However, it should still get better once they clean the glass and take off the coverings etc.

In the shadow of the Shard: Why the next generation of skycrapers is struggling to get off the ground

The Shard already dominates the capital's skyline and Liverpool, Brighton, Glasgow and east London are next in line for the tower treatment. Or are they?

Even as the mighty Shard on the banks of the Thames shoots towards its opening in May, plans for tall buildings from London to Liverpool are being knocked down as opposition grows to the tall, the ostentatious, the showy and "iconic". And the people knocking Britain's new towers back are not necessarily traditional conservatives and architectural purists, but young activists and many people usually associated with the avant-garde.

Last year, architect Amanda Levete's 25-storey tower in Shoreditch, east London was set to rise from the Huntingdon Estate, overlooking downtown's favourite edgy backwater, Redchurch Street, but was knocked back by a group of highly motivated residents including a clutch of high-profile artists, Misses Emin and Whiteread among them. More recently, a plan for a so-called eco-tower next to Dalston's Kingsland station – the hipster hub of east London – has just been repelled until further notice. With 130 flats, and fashionable accoutrements such as vertical gardens, it was designed by architects BFLS, which designed the now-familiar Strata tower in Elephant and Castle. In south London, two towers in the Vauxhall Cross development have been nixed for now, following ardent campaigning.

And the pro-low phenomenon is not just restricted to London. In Liverpool, the Liverpool Waters development, currently the UK's biggest planning application including a scraper of considerable height, has been set back following local opposition and has even raised the objection of Unesco (the city's Maritime Mercantile City is a World Heritage Site), which cited the possibility of a "serious loss of historical authenticity". There has been similar disquiet in Scotland, at the second phase of high-rise developments in the Glasgow Harbour site.

In one sense, these buildings are seen as out of time – signed off in the boom, built in the bust – and also out of place, particularly in classic four-storey Victorian streetscapes such as Dalston's. "It is inappropriate to the area, and full of 'greenwash'," says Bill Parry-Davies of Open Dalston, a group that campaigned against the tower, who says that nearby Waltham Forest has also had a similar application beside its station, indicating a trend. Parry-Davies is pleased, therefore, that Hackney Planning Committee recently rejected the exclusively private 18-storey tower block, where apartments rose from about £400,000 into six-figure sums.

Looks quite fat on the bottom. Nonetheless it's really nice tower to look at anytime on the year.

^^

I can guarantee that you would have found similar articles in the mid 1990's after the completion of the first Skyscraper in Canary Wharf, which struggled to find tenants willing to move out of the center of London.

Doom and gloom, the age of the tall building is over..etc,etc,etc.

All it takes is time, and things will start up again, Skyscrapers will come back in fashion and London will get taller and taller as the years go by, it doesn't have a choice, no more land to grow outwards, only way is more density and upwards.
