Thanks for the comments, guys. :D I always go crazy with a camera whenever I'm in London (which isn't as often as I'd like), and I love photography in general so I try and get interesting angles etc. whenever I can.

This has been in the news alot recently though (not sure why!), ive seen it in at lease two news papers (The Sunday Express and my local paper), so im guessing the post is justified and isn't 'feeding the trolls'...

Im also remaining reserved about the Guy's reclad, from the plans ive seen it will probably look worse then it does now...

FWIW I'm one of those Englishmen who has no problem with France, the French, or even Parisians (which is more than can be said for some Brétons of my acquaintance :D).

Londoners seem have a bit of a similar reputation in the UK to Parisians for being aloof and rude, so perhaps I feel a bit of solidarity with them. Maybe it's just the burden that the denizens of a large, capital city have to bear. As with most stereotypes, once you scratch the surface, it turns out to be a myth.

If I wasn't in London, I'd quite happily live there.

I've been following the London thread for a while now & do appreciate your great pics/explanations (and those of many other contributors).

The above pics of Shard are fab. On a cloudy day, its cladding is amazing, not to mention the reflections... Definitely an iconic supertall, very beautiful. I'm also happy to hear that GUY'S is finally getting its new cladding (I prefered the scales looking one a lot more though), but we'll see how it stands out. :goodbye:

The Shard: the only way is up

After more than three years of watching its relentless ascent, Londoners could be forgiven for failing to have registered that on March 30, the Shard finally stopped growing. The last piece of steel was fitted to the tower’s crown by a trio of site operatives known to history as Daz, G-man and Mr B, bringing it to a height of 309.6768 metres – a figure that varies ever so slightly in response to changes in temperature.

That is a full 75 metres taller than One Canada Square, the tower at London’s Canary Wharf that has been Britain’s tallest since its completion in 1991. When work on the Shard finishes at the beginning of next year it will not only claim that title but that of tallest building across the entire European Union.

Unsurprisingly, given its prominence, few recent buildings have proved more divisive. For its fans, the Shard is a statement of London’s confidence – of the fact that this ancient city has now grown into a thrusting metropolis, unburdened by its past, and with nothing to fear from the likes of Frankfurt and Shanghai. They argue, too, that there is much that is remarkable about the design beyond the matter of its height.

Love it or loathe it, that certainly is true. It is the work of the Italian architect Renzo Piano, perhaps best known for designing Paris’s stridently mechanistic Pompidou Centre with his former partner, Richard Rogers. The Shard, however, belongs to a different tradition of modern architecture – one that draws its imagery not from industry but from the organic world.

In the early decades of the last century, a group of German architects, centred on the utopian visionary Bruno Taut, became enamoured by the idea of directing new developments in glass technology towards the creation of buildings of crystalline form and often gargantuan scale.

They built almost nothing, but schemes such as Taut’s fantastical proposal of 1919 to create a city in the Alps constructed entirely of glass continue to resonate in the imaginations of architects today. The sparkling, craggy spire that now looms over London Bridge station could have been plucked straight from one of Taut’s expressionistic watercolours.

The fact that the Shard’s footprint shrinks from floor to floor has major implications not only for its appearance but for its organisation, too. Different sizes of floor invite different uses. The bottom third of the building – where the floors are broadest – happily accommodates office space, but above that restaurants, a hotel, a spa, and some of London’s most desirable apartments are being slotted in. The public viewing gallery at the very top is expected to attract more than two million visitors each year. While Piano’s claim that the Shard is not a tower but “a vertical city” might smack of hyperbole, it is undeniable that in its mix of uses, his building differs radically from any built in the UK before.

London's climate is not as bad as most foreigners believe and of course the days of the famous "smog" are long gone, but it is very variable, can feel like Summer one day and then Winter the next!
But this thread is about the "Shard" so will conclude that I think it is one of the more interesting and better looking new supertalls being built at the moment and will become a real London landmark,no doubt about that. More elegant than No. 1 World Trade Centre New York which has too much bulk.

The 'burst' is an effect of perspective, the rays themselves would be/are parallel.

It's exactly the same as the traditional sunrays noted by artists like Turner

At ground level, the most significant development has been the hoarding around Gate 1 being taken down and replaced by a lower, moveable metal fence. The site entrance turnstiles for construction workers have gone with it.

Shortly after there was some weird s**t light happening. Dark clouds directly above and to the south, but a fair sized break in the clouds to the north was allowing light to reflect back off their sides, reversing the normal expectation this side of the equator that daylight comes from the south.

Then we got a small window of sunlight peeking through from the south and the south side of the Shard was picked out by the bright clouds in reflection like a bright silver scalpel blade.

Everything went a bit Frank Miller for a few minutes :D

Flats in London's Shard skyscraper are set to break two records when they are sold this summer - not only will they be Europe's highest homes, they will also create the world's most unequal neighbourhood in terms of house prices.

Spread over 13 floors in the 1,017ft glass building, the ten apartments are likely to cost between £30m and £50m each, according to research commissioned by Reuters from the property consultancy Savills.

This is in line with Europe's current priciest homes at the Candy brothers-designed One Hyde Park in Kensington and Chelsea.

Although the Shard was designed by award-winning Italian architect Renzo Piano, who also worked on Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou, its surroundings near London Bridge, which once served as a model for the slums in Charles Dickens' novels, are significantly different to upmarket Knightsbridge.

In fact, at around £520 per square foot, the average price of a home in the SE1 postcode is less than a tenth of the £5,000 to £6,000 per square foot the new apartments in the 95-storey building are expected to fetch.

"You don't get this pinnacle of value in relation to the surrounding district in any other city in the developed world," Yolande Barnes, from Savills, said.

"It's the equivalent of building the Shard in Harlem."

Like many of the capital's most expensive real estate, the flats could attract buyers from Russia, the Middle East and Hong Kong seeking to benefit from the weakness of sterling and shield their money from global financial volatility.

Prices for the best properties in central London have risen 44% in the last three years, more than twice the increase across the capital as a whole, according to property consultant Knight Frank.

A spokesman for the Shard, which is being developed by London-based entrepreneur Irvine Sellar and funded by the state of Qatar, said it would act as "a magnet and catalyst for regeneration" and one local estate agent said its towering presence had already boosted interest in nearby homes.

But the glass spire has its fair share of critics.

The United Nations cultural body UNESCO said the Tower of London's world heritage status was at risk because the skyscraper compromised its "visual integrity" on the skyline while columnist Giles Coren, writing in The Times, described the building as an "engorged rectilinear monument to fat-cattism" that has been "dumped directly behind St Paul's".

Meanwhile, dramatic aerial images from the top of the unfinished skyscraper have been revealed by a US student and his two friends who broke into the building and climbed to the top.

Hey you were faster to post some of my own pics here. ;)
I'm quite surprised there weren't many pictures from the Point Hill in Greenwich though. It's one of the best observation points in London and The Shard can be seen in (almost) all of its beauty. Only disadvantage being is that there is no that 'split' reflection like one seen from Alexandra Palace.

i heard that parliament hill is one of the best locations to capture the entire london skylines, i'll definitely go there when i come to london during the olympic :cheers2:

There have been some fantastic images of the Shard over the past few days, and as always thanks to everyone who has taken the time and effort to post them

Going off topic though, it breaks my heart to see the Post Office Tower (for that's what it will always be to me) looking like that since they took out all the gubbins from the middle section :ohno: It just ain't right.

Simply divine! What a building.... one of the worlds most beautiful.

I still think they should install some powerful lighting into the top section that points upwards creating the illusion of more height. Like the lighting they used in New York to mark the positions the twin towers used to fill.

Although it could end up looking like Superman's fortress of solitude.

I am sure Piano thought long and hard about the top of such a signature building. Perhaps one day we will get some insight into the whole design process of this building from the first sketches to its completion. I think this building deserves it in that it is the first major, immediately visible building designed by a foreign architect. It is very rare for the British to allow non-nationals to design buildings for its capital. I am sure there must be one or two. But this is the first major declaration by a major contemporary architect that is impossible to miss in modern London. Here's hoping we will see many more. Perhaps one day skyscrapers design by Zaha Hadid, and Calatrava for example. Now that will be quite something!

I think it looks better like this. The irregularity here, and at the rest of the facade, makes it look like glass shards. If it was more regular and perfectly symmetrical in shape then it wouldn't imitate shards of glass since broken glass is never in a clean, regular shape. It gives it a less contrived, artificial look, and justifies its name as 'the Shard'.

I think once they finish the bits that are missing, it won't make any difference. It'll be exactly like the render (and that doesn't happen that often with buildings, renders are misleading plenty of times).

I'm quite surprised that the top few levels are going to be open to the elements as in the render. What will they be used for, and won't it be too dangerous with the high winds up there (never mind the cold) for people to be allowed up there?

Oh, and Zaha Hadid has had her office based in London since she started it in 1980. She studied architecture at the Architectural Association in Bedford Square from 1972 and has been a British citizen since 1989.

Yes of course you are right. My language was imprecise. Foreign architects have worked in London but the architecture they have created has slipped beneath the radar somewhat on the world stage. I Canada Square could be in any large city in the world. It is a tall box with a point on the top. After the Olympics the Shard will be recognized all over the world as being a building in London and it is designed by an Italian. And the last time I looked no skyscraper has been built by Zaha Hadid in London. I look forward to that day with excitement.

Yes of course you are right. My language was imprecise. Foreign architects have worked in London but the architecture they have created has slipped beneath the radar somewhat on the world stage. I Canada Square could be in any large city in the world. It is a tall box with a point on the top. After the Olympics the Shard will be recognized all over the world as being a building in London and it is designed by an Italian. And the last time I looked no skyscraper has been built by Zaha Hadid in London. I look forward to that day with excitement.

Sorry to push you on this one but what the hell are you talking about? Are you claiming that we only allow English architects to build our internationally recognised skyscrapers? Pray tell me how many of these internationally recognised towers does London have? Shard and maybe The Gherkin? one English and One Italian so a 50:50 split then.

Mercury City Tower, while still U/C, managed to reach the Shard's full height before the Shard itself topped out.
