As has been said already the laser show was abit of a let down (from where I was standing anyway), I was expecting to hear some music and for there to be more lasers. Standing on London Bridge, they were visible but not that clear most of the time, although I think the street lights may have had a lot to do with it.

I was however impressed with the turnout, even though it was advertised in The Standard etc, I wasnt expecting there to be as many people as there was (even though there was bound to be alot of people, I kept thinking it was going to be mainly skyscrapercity types dotted around with their tripods out :colgate: )

It felt like Carnival at times.

Here is a very shaky video showing what it was like on London Bridge

The media in Australia has pushed the notion that the Shard is a blot on the historic London Skyline ? I know London has a huge history and is lucky to have so many links to it's amazing architectural past yet it is a living city right now in the 21st century. Congratulations on a building that will become yet another must visit site in your wonderful city. Humans are funny things,,,,,,,,they get used to or become familiar with something relative to their own lives and never think it should change.........They complain but they pass and the world keeps doing it's thing...enjoy !

I'm sure when they first built St Pauls, many hated it.....when they first built the Houses of Parliement many would hate that design too....

....'traditionalists' need to get over themselves. It's like the folk who say "you mustnt build a supertall near the Empire state building"..... why ? It's had it's day as the king of the hill.....progress is progress and we shouldn't allow sentimental crap to hold us back.

Shard has finished exterior construction but the interior is yet to be finished, such as cladding the walls, bathroom fixtures, internal pipes, air conditioner ducts.

It will take around 6-8 months before its done.

For the banner you need a panorama shot.

Anyway, great pics. They should keep that light on the tower permanently.

This is the first time in months that I returned to this forum, heck I didn't even know about the tower, until I read about it on a news site today. I don't know what others have said about this tower and I'm just expressing my opinion and the fact that it seems to be a common opinion according to you, should tell you something, so don't post an immature reply kid, when someone doesn't share your opinion.

are those gaps part of the design?

The ones about half way up are the portals for the Building Maintenance Units (window cleaning, etc.). They close up when they're not in use.

Here's a triptych from last night - after the lasers had stopped

I love how this tower looks (although I still have kind of mixed feelings towards it). This is definitely the time for London. Enjoy it!
About the thing with the lights, I find it a little creepy. In some pictures it looked just like a dalek trying to destroy all the city! Also, a little bit like this:

wonderful tower during the day. so so at night. The window work and facade have a wonderful texture and I love the different angles the glass bends at. However, the top just seems to peter out kind of weakly.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used it, maybe not all night but maybe like the Eiffel tower:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTaq_MI6ey8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTaq_MI6ey8)

they do that every hour for 5 minutes, from about 9pm til 3am when it gets light again (depending on the time of year).

They will probably reserve the lasers for special occasions though, e.g. New Year. I suspect we'll be seeing it again during the olympics as well.

How long until this tower is featured in some dystopian fiction?
I mean, look at it; it has all the trappings of a building fit for Big Brother headquarters (just replace the lasers with spotlights shining down).

Awesome structure nonetheless.

Ehh, I think The Shard and One World Trade Center are about equal.

Not yet they aren't, 1 WTC isn't finished. But even when it is, the Shard is definitely the more adventurous building architecture-wise: it is asymmetrical, it doesn't even come to a proper point, and its base is extremely irregular. Granted, 1WTC will be majestic given the height and the elegance of the cladding, but then it is supposed to be more imposing and awe-inspiring, it's in a city of skyscrapers rather than across from a 1000 year old castle.

The expectations were high, the shape of the building is good, but not very imaginative. I am hugely dissapointed by this, IMO the future of skyscraper design lies in Shanghai Tower-ish type of buildings, more organic and more circular, but The Shard is surely a contribution to London's skyline, nevertheless it looks quite dull and clumsy. It's good to see lightness and grace from a skyscraper, if you like skyscrapers of regular geometric shape, Leadenhall building is superior to The Shard in every aspect. :smug:

How long until this tower is featured in some dystopian fiction?
I mean, look at it; it has all the trappings of a building fit for Big Brother headquarters (just replace the lasers with spotlights shining down).

Awesome structure nonetheless.

Although not the centre of the film... it appeared briefly in 'Children of Men'

The owners of the Shard say they get several calls a day from film companies wanting to use the tower as a location... but they always turn them down.

Humans are funny things,,,,,,,,they get used to or become familiar with something relative to their own lives and never think it should change.........They complain but they pass and the world keeps doing it's thing...enjoy !

also I would hardly call South London a "historic" London skyline! Certainly it is not a widely celebrated aesthetic. Rather the history of many sections of the London skyline, particularly outside of the tourist cores have always been a hotchpotch of styles and silhouettes, forgettable apart from its scale and overall presence. Surely the strong aesthetic of the Shard can only therefore help people to focus and remember an area that they would have quickly forgotten previously.

Do you guys count internal work as progress or do you just label them as 'complete' only when all the cladding is finished? Because the tower is not close to being finished internally.

There has been a tendancy on this website to label structures as "complete" once the exterior is finished. Then they usually sit in the U/C forum for a few more months until the interior is complete. After that, it is then put in the archives. Tokyo Sky Tree is an example of this.

The exception is the Burj Khalifa, which should have put in the archives over a year ago.

I was curious too. Here's a quote from a recent news article.

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/architecture/the-shard-where-are-all-the-tenants-7912144.html

"...Asked when the flats would go on sale and at what price, he replied: "We are holding back on selling or leasing for some time. We want to evaluate the impact of the building before we make those decisions." Some reports suggested it was perhaps prospective buyers – some of whom would spend much of the time above the clouds – who were being selective..."

the shard was built to become a very significant modern landmark of london which is one of alpha++ world city just out of 2 (with new york). mayor of london is a very intelligent and smart person who does not run the city in careless ways. it took many many years to erect the first supertall of the eu. the construction cost of the shard alone is more than those two city of capitals towers put together, not to mention the overall value of the shard (estimated $3.9 billion). voters should realise the fact that the shard ain't joke, just like ranzo piano ain't one too. oh well, never mind, it is not extremely awful to see london is the only city which is qualified to represent 2 buildings until the final. the shard will be introduced to the world in a very coming days (by the mass amount of media services). go london "the capital of the world"

SO143
July 21st, 2012, 03:14 AM
do you even read it properly? it is not the construction cost but the overall value which means including the value of land (perhaps london has the world's highest price in this aspect), the cost for it's backpack the place (then again land value), cost of the luxury apartments (cheapest price is start from £50 million) and many other things etc. there was another tall tower there before the shard was built, but it had to be demolished in order to build the shard and this is how the new buildings are built in london.

Jamsterx
July 21st, 2012, 03:19 AM
Also, the costs include the redevelopment of London Bridge station and the surrounding area.

SO143
July 21st, 2012, 03:23 AM
exactly, i even thought the owner of the shard had to buy that demolished tower to build the shard at the same location. this project is not cheap at all.

the construction cost of the shard alone cost over GB £450m, the city of capitals ( 2 towers ) cost only US $450m. wow, a huge difference.

i just rechecked all the details of the building. well, i shouldn't have used the word "fantastic" but it's design is "not bad" at all. i am sure it will look nice when it's done. obviously, many modern buildings are growing along the river thames eg new $1 billion american embassy project, vauxhall cluster, st george wharf tower, many residential apartments near the canary wharf etc. i don't think this building is awful but i do prefer a better-designed building, more iconic one like the city hall or something like that.

Descending the Shard

The charity abseil is these days as common as the fun run when it comes to raising money for good causes. You get some sponsors, and then put on a hard hat and abseil down the side of a non-descript 15-storey office building in your city centre with the local news in attendance trying to fill up today's schedule.

With the Shard now externally completed, this concept is being moved to a whole new level, but one that is perhaps not unexpected for such a prestigious building.

The Descent of the Shard is marketed as an "exclusive event," and abseilers are renamed "descendants". The event involves what will likely be a small group of people who will get the chance to abseil from the very top of the Shard for charity - namely the Outward Bound Trust and Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

Adding to the class of it is the Duke of York who will be taking part in his position as the Chairman of the Outward Bound Trust. The trust promise to train everyone involved with the help of the Royal Marines as if it is an adventure weekend, complete with some royalty thrown in on the side.

To do this the "descendants" must each make a minimum donation or sponsorship of £25,000. Tellingly, talk of £25,000 donations suggest that this may not be something for joe public who likes to raise money over a period of months by getting ten pound donations, but for those with a taste for extreme sports who can get their hands on it quickly. As such, five people have already managed to reserve places out of what is potentially as few as seven places which should be an easy way to raise at least £175,000 for charity.

When they abseil down the shard, could someone ask them to carry a sponge and a squeegee?

Those godawful unwashed windows a third of the way down are begging to be cleaned. Still can't understand why it hasn't been done.
