Environmental matters:Herpetologist Romulus Whitaker at the inauguration of EcoQuest, a nature discovery centre, in Mysore on Saturday.

Mysore: EcoQuest, a nature discovery centre aiming to provide a forum for citizens of Mysore to converse and connect with one another on nature, wildlife and conservation, was launched by noted herpetologist Romulus Whitaker here on Saturday.

An exhibition titled ‘The Big Few' that opened on the occasion provided information on natural history and conservation of select large and endangered mammals from the Western Ghats. The exhibition also featured interactive games that revealed how the choices that humans make every day affect the survival of these species.

The centre has a hall with creative activities for young visitors, Madhusudan of Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), told The Hindu.

He said that EcoQuest, an NCF initiative, was located on New Kantharaj Urs Road, Saraswatipuram, and would provide all facilities for educational activities relating to wildlife and conservation. EcoQuest is a Mysore-based non-profit organisation, he added. Pavitra Sankaran, who curates EcoQuest, said there was both the need and the opportunity for greater public engagement for the conservation of wildlife in the country, and launching the nature discovery centre was a small step towards making it a reality.

Heart of city gets fresh lease of life
Mysore, April 24, DHNS

Students of Amrita Vishwavidyapeetam swarmed Vasavi Circle, popularly known as ‘Chikkagadiyara Circle’, on Sunday morning to clean garbage stagnating near the busy market place.

While ‘Chikkagadiyara’ is synonymous for hawkers selling their produce, it is also infamous for bearing the stench of rotten vegetables, flowers and fruits.

Clad in orange, more than 150 students undertook the drive to rid the area of its garbage dumps.

Each team of 20 students led by a group leader, strolled through the bylanes of Shivarampet, Devaraja Market and around ‘Chikkagadiyara’ collecting rubbish, much to the curious looks of the bystanders.

The cleanliness drive was part of the ‘Amala Bharatham’ campaign initiated by Mata Amritanandamayi. It aims at improving awareness among people to refrain from throwing garbage on the streets and avoid spitting on the roads.

Flagging off the event, Medical Education and District In-Charge Minister S A Ramdas opined that apart from the cleanliness drive it was also important to improve awareness among traders and public to keep the heart of the city free of garbage. Continuing, he said that apart from efforts to clean the place, it was also important for similar mindset of people.

He mentioned that it was also essential to join the fight to root out corruption and the onus rested on elected representatives.

He also asserted that the order to ban plastic from the city would be released within 15 days, making MCC’s initiative strong. Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath and others were present on the occasion.

Aloha Aloft!!
Aloft Hotels - designed to deliver urban influenced, contemporary vibrant designs and a novel guest experience at an affordable price has set its foot in India. Yashodhan Jadhav reports on the brand’s talking points
Tuesday, October 12, 2010, 12:00 Hrs [IST]

Aloft – the swanky mid-scale brand by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc debuted in India during mid 2010 with the launch of 130-room Aloft Chennai OMR-IT Expressway. Aloft Hotels closely follows the roll out of Starwood’s Four Point by Sheraton brand in India and is touted to be the fastest growing brand in the company’s portfolio. Since its debut in June 2008, 40 Aloft hotels have opened across the globe while ten more opening have been scheduled for 2010. Currently, Aloft is present in key North American markets like New York, New Jersey, Arizona, California and Mexico in the Asia Pacific region – Beijing, Guangdon, Thailand along with Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. The brand will also be launched in Central and South America (Columbia) and European (Brussels) markets in the near future.

http://www.hospitalitybizindia.com/detailNews.aspx?aid=9281&sid=20

Aloft in India
Urbanedge Hotels, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) of Auromatrix Hotels Private Limited plans to set up five Aloft hotels across India with an investment of around Rs 550 crore. For all the upcoming hotels, Urbanedge Hotels has signed franchise agreement with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide for expanding the Aloft brand in India. Apart from the hotels operational in Chennai and Bengaluru, properties in Coimbatore and Ahmedabad (180 keys each) and Chandigarh with 170 keys are in the pipeline. In the second phase of development, Urbanedge plans to open ten more Aloft hotels across the country and has identified cities like Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mysore, Kochi and Vishakhapatnam. Aloft has been positioned and conceptualised keeping in mind the requirements of the ‘Gen Y’ traveller and is Starwood’s design-led, social experience brand. As a young, tech-driven society, India is expected to be a key market for Aloft’s development outside the US.

Talking Points

Aloft Guest Rooms – the brand synonymous with its loft-inspired design features a nine foot high ceiling in 25 square metre standard room, plush beds, free Wi-Fi and custom Aloft amenities by bliss spa complete with a plug-n-play docking station for charging gadgets

re:mix lounge: space in the hotel lobby to work and play; it features free Wi-Fi, pool table with day-to-night lighting and music

w xyz bar: the signature bar at Aloft hotels serves everything from pints to pinot noirs and signature cocktails, complete with a snack menu, music and events

re:fuel by Aloft: the grab and go gourmet shop offers light meals, health bites and non alcoholic beverages; remains open 24/7

re:charge: the health club at Aloft complete with all the tools for the fitness fix

tatic: conference spaces equipped with state-of-the-art audio/video, plasma TV and complimentary Wi-Fi

touch-n-go kiosk: allows for swift check-in for guests on arrival. Features touch screen technology that allows choosing rooms and floor, confirming rates, room keys and even printing boarding passes. (This facility is yet to be made operational in India, expected shortly)

touch: Aloft’s in-touch terminals allows for easy access to the Internet

camp Aloft: developed specially for kids, it provides for child’s own camp Aloft bed-in-a bag and special treats

Arf: aloft hotels are pet friendly for dogs under 40 lbs. The programme features a Aloft branded bed and bowl, complimentary treats and toys

Aloha! Desk: this is Aloft’s stylised front desk and a stylish alternative to traditional check in counters and sits in the centre of the lobby

Since its inception, the Aloft brand has been a select service hotel, but in India the brand standards were tweaked to provide guests with the entire gamut of services. “It is crucial to distinguish between formal and informal service, while Aloft hotels in India have been designed to offer essential services that guests require, but certainly not in a formal manner. In case a guest needs help with their baggage, Aloft provides for necessary help. So as we roll out more of these hotels in India, Aloft will address culturally sensitive issues like the service needs (of Indian clientele) that are expected but in a completely informal manner,” asserts Brian McGuinness, Senior Vice President, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Specialty - Select Brands.

The Brand Blueprint
Aloft Hotels were designed in conjunction with David Rockwell and the Rockwell Group whose goal was to reinvent the select serve/mid-market hotels often said to be drab and unmemorable in appearance and experience. Aloft has been conceived by the team backing the upper upscale W Hotels and was inspired by the notion that the mid-market hotel segment was ready for reinvention. Design process began in 2005 to churn out an urban inspired, tech savvy, environment with high ceiling and multi-functional spaces that are high on design and style quotient but positioned at accessible price points. Aloft is inspired from an emerging segment of high style, low cost brands that moves away from the conventional cookie cutter hotel models that populate the mid-market space.

Centre grounds airport expansion

MYSORE: The Centre has put a spanner in the expansion of the Mysore airport.

The Centre has approved four laning of NH 212 between Mysore and Nanjangud, which effectively derails the expansion plan as the proposed runway cuts across the highway. Chamarajnagar MP R Dhruvanarayan, who is pushing for upgrading the stretch, on Wednesday said the Centre has approved the project and the works will start in a month. According to him, an additional bridge will be built across Kapila river at Nanjangud.

While upgrading the treacherous stretch is necessary to take the load, it is coming in the way of the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) plan to expand the workable airport. The KIADB is in the process of acquiring the land required for expansion. But some part of it has been handed over to AAI, which has told the officials that unless the NH diversion work is taken up they will not go ahead with the expansion that involves expanding the runway that cuts across the highway.

The MP said the works to upgrade the lane were delayed due to technical reason and it is now ready for execution. Along with this, the stretch between Nanjangud and Bandipur will be widened. The other stretch of NH 212 between Mysore and Tirumakudlu Narsipur is also scheduled to be widened. The NH 212 connects Kozikode in Kerala to Kollegal in Chamarajnagar district.

TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Centre-grounds-airport-expansion/articleshow/8103048.cms)

No problem!First expand that highway into 4 Lane as soon as possible.Nanjangud industrial area will get a big boost with that.

Bangalore airport idhae idhe alwa :) .But at no point of time Mysore-Bangalore flights must be withdrawn.Get connected to rest of India via Bangy.ATR is sufficient to connect nearby T2 cities to Mysore in future if required.

No they cannot as a railway line runs on the other side. NHAI is not generous enough to offer a merry go round.First let NHAI expand that road, then we can call a panchayat and have a big charcha on that :D

On the other hand, a bigger airport in my opinion is not going to boost Mysore's economy any further.ATRs are there to operate out of this airport.Bangalore is close by so cash in on that.

Mysore will benefit more with that 4 laning than the airport.

Akash,

In my opinion a bigger AP with direct flights to international destinations would be better for Mysore to have an independent growth. In my view Mysore deserves it.

I am sure a seperate big AP in Mysore will eradicate the dependency on Bangalore to a large extent. Further huge Cargo flights flying in and out of the city will boost economy of the city, which otherwise is dependent mostly on tourism.

I want to see Mysore growing on its own without being dependent on Bangalore in any case.

Manish Mysore, April 26, DHNS

People building houses are in a spot of bother as the price of sand has shot up by 50 per cent with sand costing ` 15,000 per load. Same quantity of sand was available at ` 10,500- ` 11,000 just about 30 days ago.

With the new sand policy yet to come into force and the district administration cracking down on illegal sand mining at the beginning of the month, the availability of sand has dropped considerably.

At a time when many are feeling the heat of increasing costs incurred while constructing a house, the rise in sand price has just added to the misery of prospective home owners.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Rahul H D, who is constructing a house in Srirampura, said that according to their initial estimation, they had earmarked 10 per cent of the total cost - approximately amounting to ` two lakh - for purchasing sand.

However, with prices shooting up by more than 35 per cent, he expects the cost of construction to go up by another lakh.

While purchasing sand is a costly issue, Rahul explains that it also means overshooting their budget approximations.

“We had taken a loan from a bank keeping in mind the cost of construction including materials and labour. But, the sudden increase has caught us unawares. If the prices don’t reduce soon, we will have to approach private money lenders, as the banks won’t give additional loan,” mentioned a worried Rahul.

The problem is that they have to churn out a higher rate of interest for the loans taken from money lenders. People whose home constructions are underway, also fear that the price of sand may never come down to its original rate.

Also until the new sand mining policy is implemented, they feel that substandard quality would be supplied to them. Former CREDAI President and Builders’ Association of India Chairman Sriram said that the lack of sand was causing problems complications on two fronts - availability and affordability.

Every time a strike takes place, he said that sand remains unavailable for nearly 15 days, causing major havoc among the construction industry.

Citing the example of neighbouring state Kerala, Sriram said that sand mining is totally banned in that State. However, at the same time the government has set up nearly 180 sand manufacturing units that cater to the needs of the construction industry.

He said that ‘N-sand’, also known as manufactured sand or ‘Robo sand’, is the alternative that has to be looked at while figuring out a long-term sand policy. He bemoaned that there are no ‘N-sand’ manufacturing units in Mysore District.

Until the district administration wakes up to the troubles faced by the common man, people will have to shell out more money or get stuck at the hands of private money lenders, so long as they nurse the dream of building their own house.

Hi Ananda

Proximity to Bangalore has its own advantages and disadvantages.Mysore must tap the benefits to the fullest.Mysore-Bangalore are deeply inter related since the time of Wadiyars and Tippus.I would not mind Mysore acting as a parasite here.

Ananda I support NH 212 four laning coz it has a direct impact on revenue to the state.Go through the article below.Nanjangud is developing really fast.I am more interested in Mysore getting a satellite town rather than a big airport.

Nanjangud set to emerge as Mysore's satellite town

It is one of the fastest growing industrial towns in the State

MYSORE: Nanjangud, which is one of the fastest growing industrial towns in the State, is in the spotlight as efforts to develop the town into Mysore's satellite town have begun with the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) deciding to prepare a master plan for the temple town. Plans are afoot to develop the town on the lines of the Kengeri satellite town in Bangalore.

Although there has been talk of developing Nanjangud, which is 22 km from Mysore, into a satellite town for many years, the proposal had not received much attention. The proposal has gained momentum and the focus is now on the town, which has many prestigious industrial units, including some multinationals, to prepare the town to ease "pressure" on Mysore.

"The town will on its own develop into a satellite town in urban planning in the next few years," official sources told The Hindu .

Many industries are located in the Nanjangud Industrial Area (NIA) which is spread across hundreds of acres. There are many major industries, medium industries and small-scale units in the taluk.

According to information from the industries, Nanjangud is the second highest tax-paying (sales tax of over Rs. 400 crore a year) taluk in the State after Bangalore. TVS Motor Company, Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd, Nestle India Ltd, AT and S India Private Ltd., South India Paper Mills, Reid and Taylor, Raman Boards, Jubilant Organosys, Brakes (India) and Bacardi RUM are some of the major industries located in the taluk.

The Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2007/06/13/stories/2007061313100300.htm) - 2007 story

^^Lot of industries have come up after that.Recently, Nestle setup its350 cr noodle factory. UB spirits is constructing a distillery,Opto SEZ is U/C (Medical instrumentation) etc etc

'DISTRICT MINISTER DID NOT COOPERATE FOR RS. 100 CRORE SPECIAL GRANT'
SOM (http://www.starofmysore.com/main.asp?type=news&item=28185)

Mysore, Apr. 28 (KMC&RK)- The District In-Charge Minister did not co-operate for the release of Rs. 100 crore special grant from the State Government for taking up new development projects in the city, alleged outgoing Mayor Sandesh Swamy.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Swamy said that though the CM had promised for the special grant for the city’s development, the District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas did not extend co-operation in getting the fund released.

The sum could have been used for repairing the dilapidated structures of Devaraja Market, renovation of Mandi Market building, multi-storey parking facility in front of the Zoo, parking facility near the Suburban Bus Stand etc., he said.

"It is immaterial as to which political party the Mayor belongs to. It is the basic duty of the District Minister to strive for his con-stituency’s development and not play politics at the cost of the citizens’ sufferings," said Swamy.

"I have made the best possible efforts for city’s development using the Centre's and State's grants apart from the resource mobilised by MCC," he said and hoped the next Mayor would take pending works towards completion.

MCC RESUMES ISSUING OF CR
SOM (http://www.starofmysore.com/main.asp?type=news)

Mysore, Apr. 28 (KMC&KK)- Good news for owners of newly-constructed buildings in city. They can now obtain Completion Reports (CR) from the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) directly, without being harassed by the middlemen.

MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar stated in a press release issued here yesterday that those seeking CR may apply directly to the officials concerned and in case of building norms violation amounting to 5% or less, pay the penalty. Violations beyond the 5 per cent limit will not be considered for CR; on the contrary the extra construction would eventually be demolished.

Issuance of CR had been stalled since Sept. 10, 2009, following a government order. This had caused a lot of inconvenience to building owners, especially owners of residential structures, as the CR is mandatory to avail civil amenities like water supply connection and power supply.

In the interests of the citizens, the MCC passed a resolution in its Council meeting, urging the government to withdraw its earlier order and facilitate the issuance of CR. Thus the government passed another order, directing the MCC to issue CR effective from Mar. 17, 2011. Accordingly, on Mar. 31, 2011 the MCC Commissioner directed the Joint Director of Town Planning to restart the issuance of CRs.

Joint Director of Town Planning Shashikumar told SOM that in case of residential buildings, a fine of Rs. 3,000 per sq.mt. will be imposed on violations (provided they are below 5%) and Rs. 5,000 in case of commercial buildings.

Similarly, violation of the set-back area too would attract fines of Rs. 2,500 in case of residential and Rs. 4,000 in case of commercial.

Different amounts of fine will be imposed upon double-storey buildings too, said Shashikumar.

A total revenue of Rs. 2 crore is expected from the fines collected from violators.

"Violation of building norms can be prevented in the beginning itself. But we lack sufficient staff to keep a watch on the buildings under-construction," he said and urged the citizens to co-operate with the MCC and prevent demolition, which would become inevitable in future.

"Many violations take place with the support of elected representatives, exerting pressure on the MCC officials. However, in due course, the violators will have to pay double tax and commercial building owners will have to pay triple tax as per the Karnataka Municipal Act, Section 321," he warned.

ELECTRIC FENCE AROUND PALACE TO KEEP AWAY TRESPASSERS

Mysore, Apr. 29 (KK&KMC)- The famed Mysore Palace, challenging the Taj Mahal itself in drawing tourists from the world over, also faces threats from the anti-national elements.

Hence, to beef up security measures for the heritage monument, the Palace Board has installed electric fen cing around the Palace for a length of 2.5 kms, at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore. On completion, the fence will be charged with 8 KV electricity, enough to shock away the trespassers without causing any injury.

Touching the fence would trigger an alarm at the Control Room. The entire Palace surroundings will be fitted with surveillance cameras that would be monitored from Control Room.

The fencing work is undertaken by the Electrical Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), a subsidiary of the Government of India. The company will carry out the maintenance for five years, said Palace Board Deputy Director P.V. Avaradi.

ECIL’s Senior Technical Manager Mohan Reddy said that the wires for the fence have been imported from Israel while other equipment are sourced from various companies within the country.

The Palace surroundings have been divided into ten zones and they will be fitted with electronic equipment centrally monitored from the Control Room.

UID must for driver's licence
TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/UID-must-for-drivers-licence/articleshow/8121034.cms)

MYSORE: Don't have Aadhar number? You could be in trouble.

In a move to meet the June-end deadline for the unique identification (UID) number scheme, the Mysore district administration has made it mandatory for learner's licence or driving licence. If you have already applied for Aadhar, just quote the enrolment number to get the licence.

Deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta said on Friday that they are starting with the RTOs in the district. Next it will be implemented at the Mysore City Corporation and Mysore Urban Development Authority for those seeking licences for construction of a house or buying site.

UID number is a 12-digit number allotted to the residents. Some 16.70 lakh in Mysore district have enrolled while an estimated 10% of 16.70 lakh have got their UID number.

People seeking to get government benefits will have to produce Aadhar number. Be it for enrolment under the rural employment guarantee scheme, getting new telephone connection or opening a bank account, the number is mandatory. It will be further extended for payment of income tax.

Sound and light show on royal splendour of Mysore
Shyam Sundar Vattam, Mysore, May 2, DHNS:

A sound-and-light show on the history of the princely state of Mysore will premiere in the City of Palaces somewhere in the third week of May, the organisers said.

http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/05/02/state-splendour-of-mysore.jpg

The programme will debut in Kannada, and later in Hindi and English languages. The ‘son et lumiere’ show, one of the ambitious projects of the Mysore Palace Board, will depict the rich history of Mysore — the life and times of Yaduraya, his successors, and the reign of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, the last ruler of the Wadiyar dynasty.

The programme did have its share of hiccups and controversies, leading to its delay. With the hurdles now removed, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the scion of the Mysore royal family, has approved the script.

The 50-minute capsule will add to the beauty of the majestic Amba Vilas Palace built in the Indo-Saracenic style, P V Avaradi, Deputy Director of the Palace Board, told Deccan Herald.

Several noted personalities like Kannada actors Jayanthi, the late Vishnuvardhan, C H Ambareesh and Master Hiranaiah have rendered their voices to the show that will be organised in front of the palace two days a week from 7 pm to 8 pm, he said.

The show has been scripted in such a way that no artistes are involved in it. People will only listen to the commentary on the history of Mysore, and witness lighting skills on the imposing palace, Avaradi said.

The entry fee is likely to be Rs 50 per head. The show will not be held on Saturdays and Sundays because of the illumination of the palace.

Avaradi said Krishnakumar, the brain behind the show, will arrive in the city this week to give it the final touches. The deputy commissioner, also the member-secretary of the Palace Board, has given the green signal for the launch of the show which is expected to kick off on May 15, according to Avaradi.

The Hindi and the English versions of the show will be launched after June. The whole idea behind the show is to explain to tourists the rich history of the Wadiyar dynasty that ruled the princely State of Mysore for four centuries and also made remarkable contributions for the overall development of the erstwhile Mysore State in general, and Mysore City in particular

What is an Auto Tipper ??

MCC purchased last year under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) last year

The 165 auto-tippers were purchased with the Rs 3.29 crore allocated under JNNURM. Manufactured by Piaggio-Ape, the auto-tippers purchased under the JNNURM funds have separate compartments for biodegradable and non-degradable wastes. The auto-tippers have slogans, `Keep the city clean,` `It is your responsibility` and `Environment cleanliness and Protection of Health is everyone`s responsibility` painted on the sides.

Each vehicle costs around Rs. 2.6 lakh. But 95 of them are rusting because garbage collection contracts have not been given in all the wards in the city.

DASARA EXHIBITION GROUNDS TO BE ACTIVE ROUND THE YEAR: DC

Mysore, May 3 (DM)- Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta has said that the district administration is taking all measures to make Dasara Exhibition Grounds active throughout the year for the sake of citizens and tourists.

The matter was recently discussed at the Consultative Committee meeting of the Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) in which KEA Chairman B.P. Manjunath and others gave useful suggestions in this regard.

The DC said that the exhibition, which is spread over 80 acres, is presently active only for nearly four-and-half months a year. Manjunath's endeavour is to make the ground a hub of activities throughout the year. At present, the Maharaja College Grounds is hosting a majority of major functions and exhibitions. However, the Mysore University is not happy with its usage since it has been a playground for decades, he said.

Taking note of this, it is now being thought of to shift all such activities to the Dasara Exhibition Grounds as it has all facilities like drinking water, toilet and shops. Providing a permanent shelter on the ground would make the premises perfect for such activities while reducing the cost as well as address the parking woes. All the exhibitions that are now held in Maharaja College grounds, Scouts & Guides Grounds, Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry and Sahakara Bhavan would be shifted to the Exhibition grounds.

With this plan in mind, permission will not be given henceforth to hold exhibitions at other places. The KEA Administrative Office would be shifted to other location soon, the DC explained.

Automatic vehicle parking

the DC said an automatic vehicle parking system would also be introduced at the grounds during Dasara festival in the wake of public complaints. Tenders would be called soon and professionals in the field will be asked to manage the system.

Also, an automatic entrance would be set up to issue tickets through bar coding. From this year onwards, Dasara events such as Raitha Dasara, Makkala Dasara, Mahila Dasara etc., would be held permanently at the exhibition grounds, he explained.

Detailing other plans, the DC said the exhibition grounds would be developed on the Urban Haat model by inviting artisans from across the country to exhibit their arts and crafts. The artisans who are presently holding exhibitions at Wellington House on Irwin road would be asked to shift to the Dasara exhibition grounds, which could go a long way in making the ground active throughout the year.

Since Mysore is one of the prominent tourist places in the South, the centrally located exhibition ground will prove a perfect venue for tourist entertainment, with the establishment of children's amusement park, for which global tenders would be called soon, the DC said.

Stating that the giant wheel installed during Dasara was not of good quality, as it was meant only for a temporary period, the DC said having a permanent kids entertainment park would address all problems including frequent shifting of items by successful bidders, he concluded.

Audio guide for visitors to Mysore zoo

Shankar Bennur

— Photo: M.A. Sriram
http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/04/images/2011050460350501.jpg
Awareness: Foreign tourists being given information about audio guide facility that is aimed at providing information to visitors about the zoo animals and birds on their cellphones.

Mysore: Chimpanzees are intelligent enough to use sticks to catch termites; macaws can imitate human voice; giraffe legs are over six feet long, taller than most humans…. If you are not aware of such interesting facts about the animal world, try the ‘cellphone audio guide' next time you visit the century-old Mysore zoo. The most amazing facts about the animals at the zoo can be accessed using the audio guide.

Said to be the first of its kind in an Indian zoo, the audio guide facility, which is available in English and Kannada is user-friendly, according to the zoo authorities.

Speaking to The Hindu, Zoo Executive Director and Conservator of Forests K.B. Markandeya said: “The initiative may help the tourists to know more about the animals, including the endangered ones, and thus help in spreading the message of wildlife conservation.” Introduced in association with Boltell, a provider of audio guides, the zoo has taken a step forward to make available interesting facts about the majority of the zoo animals at the touch of a button.

This simple-to-use audio guide is available at the zoo ticket counters starting at a price of Rs. 10. A scratch card is sold at the ticket counters that can be used to activate the audio guide to get information about the zoo animals on phone. The service gets activated when the number or code that is there on the scratch card is entered on the cellphone.

Enclosures of major species of animals and birds have been numbered. When the visitors reach a particular enclosure, they have to enter its number on their cellphone to get information about the animal/bird in the enclosure, Mr. Markandeya said. The audio guide provides information about the habitat of animals and birds also.

Mr Markandeya said the facility was launched last week and the initial response was good. It is likely to become more popular in near future.

Decks cleared for biodiversity park

MYSORE: The way for the construction of biodiversity centre at the Manasa Gangotri was cleared on Tuesday after a site visit by the activists, who have mandated to the University of Mysore to ensure that green cover is not lost at the PG campus.

The varsity has agreed to make minor changes in the location of the site that will save a few trees. The centre for biodiversity, bioprospecting and sustainable development at the campus will not be shifted as initially sought but will make some changes in its designs.

Activist M Ramalingam, who was part of the joint panel constituted by the varsity that looked at options to save the trees okayed by the forest department to be axed, said they looked at the site and okayed the plan. Of the 10 trees that were to be axed, seven have grown old and passed their period of fertility, he told TOI. There is also a concern that the special grants for the centre will lapse, he pointed out.

The varsity has been asked to protect green cover and also grow saplings at the biodiversity park to be set up at a part of the Kukkarahalli lake. Activist M Lakshmana said they have taken undertaking from the varsity that they will plant 1,000 saplings in its land. We will track it and ensure that they are maintained too, he stated.

URBAN PROPERTY OWNERSHIP RECORD FOR MYSORE

Legal ownership documents to be issued for 2.30 lakh properties

Mysore, May 5 (KMC)- The Karnataka Government is implementing the Urban Property Ownership Record (UPOR) project for the creation of comprehensive database (spatial and non-spatial) of all properties in Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bellary and Shimoga.

Being implemented through the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, the project will give a unique identity to the urban properties.

The city survey is the process of locating, identifying, measuring, mapping, collecting documents and recording the details in the property records card.

The difference between the khata maintained by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and the property records card is that the MCC maintains khata for urban dwellings and collect cess on the basis of built-up area. Khata is a record of cess collected but speaks nothing about the property title.

The UPOR project collects property details such as the boundaries of the land plot, area of the land, building details such as the built-up area and number of floors and the rights on the property such as ownership, mortgage and lease and history of transaction on the property.

Thus the UPOR certificate — issued by the Department of Survey, Settlement and Land Records — will be a legal document and will be the only valid ownership certificate.

Private partners will be responsible for spatial data creation and creation of information technology infrastructure and delivery of services. The Department of Survey, Settlement and Land Records of the Karnataka Government will create spatial records along with the vendor. It will also conduct title enquiry, approve changes to the property record, and validate the work of the service provider.

The UPOR project will assure ownership to property owners holding genuine titles. Prospective buyers will be assured of the genuineness of the property offered for sale and all encumbrances will be systematically recorded. This will promote trust in transactions and security of the property title. The MCC will get a comprehensive database of all properties in the city.

Mysore was included in the UPOR during 1970. At that time there were only eight villages under the purview of Mysore city and around 45,000 properties were surveyed and records prepared.

Presently, the UPOR project will include 42 villages, with an estimated 2,75,000 properties.

In the first phase of the project, 60 primary control points, 166 second phase control points and all road junctions will be marked in the third phase, coordinating them using Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Electronic Total Station (ETS) instruments. As of now, maps of all the 42 villages have been computerised and their geo-reference obtained. As many as 1,87,820 properties have been surveyed and mapped by the end of Feb. 2011. Details about 47,660 properties have been obtained from their owners and a database has been created. Details about the properties have also been obtained from the MCC, MUDA and Revenue Department and uploaded to the database.

During 1970, the Mysore city of eight villages measured 42 sq.kms. in area. It has now grown to 180 sq. kms. The target set was to map 2 lakh urban properties. However, 2,30,613 properties have already been identified and details of 67,659 properties assimilated so far, said Dy. Commissioner Harsha Gupta, adding that the number of properties is expected to reach 2.75 lakh.

Three cheetah cubs born at Mysore zoo
Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/06/21hdline.htm)

MYSORE: The arrival of two African cheetahs at the Mysore zoo in March this year as part of an animal exchange programme with Germany's Leipzig Zoo has proved to be a double bonanza. Four cheetahs were originally brought here, but their number has gone up to seven just 40 days later.

One of the female cheetahs has given birth to three cubs, which, according to sources here, is a special occasion as the birth of cheetah cubs in captivity in an Indian zoo is a rare occurrence.

Mysore zoo is the second zoo in India to house cheetahs after the Sakkarbaug zoo in Gujarat, the sources said.

The cubs were delivered a fortnight ago, even before the two pairs of cheetahs were put on public display. The cubs, according to zoo sources, are in good health. As the cubs are very vulnerable and the surroundings here are also new, the zoo veterinarians are taking “unprecedented” veterinary care, sources said.

While the male cheetahs are four-and-a-half years old, the age of the two female cheetahs is over four years. The zoo authorities realised that the cheetah was pregnant only after its arrival, and therefore took “foolproof care”, including monitoring it round the clock.

Jump a traffic signal, get a notice (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Jump-a-traffic-signal-get-a-notice/articleshow/8163257.cms)

MYSORE: Next time you jump a traffic signal, don't think you were lucky to give a policeman a slip. For, you may not be that lucky to miss a postal notice at your doorstep.

In the wake of increasing traffic rule violations, the police have begun sending the notices to the homes of violators. If the notice is ignored, they will have to pay the fine in the court. Majority of violations include signal jumping, triple riding, using phone while driving, etc.

Starting May 1, constables have been building a record of vehicle numbers, timing, violation details, date and place of occurrence at all traffic stations. Subsequently, police officers will check details of vehicle owners and their addresses and will send notices through posts or staff. Within three days, a traffic police station has recorded over 150 cases.

A senior officer said they have procured a database of registration of vehicles of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers along with addresses of the owners from RTO. As the constables do not have powers to issue notices, they have been directed to assist the officers by passing on the information. Presently, only ASIs, SIs and inspectors have the right to book traffic violation cases.

Shortly, the police would be given BlackBerrys to manage traffic in the city, on the lines of Bangalore.

DCP (traffic) P Rajendra Prasad told TOI that the new move would bring in road discipline. Hence constables at 124 traffic junctions are empowered to record and report traffic rule violations.

Over 16 vehicle users, including KSRTC drivers, were fined for violating traffic rules in April. They were served notices after the violations were recorded on CCTVs. A city court slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 each on violators, an officer said.

Little old news but strategically very important project for Mysore's growth. I hope they complete both track doubling and electrification by end of 2012.

=======================================================

Mysore-Bangalore travel time may come down soon

Special Correspondent
Track electrification is being taken up concurrently with track-doubling work
Track electrification has been completed till Kengeri

Electrification cost estimated at

Rs. 69.5 crore

MYSORE: Travelling time between Mysore and Bangalore may soon be reduced as electrification of the railway track is being taken up along with the ongoing track doubling work.

Though track electrification was sanctioned along with track doubling in the 2007-08 Railway Budget, the foundation is being laid now to complete electrification concurrently with the line doubling work between Mysore and Bangalore.

According to Divisional Railway Manager B.B. Verma, track electrification has been completed till Kengeri but now the foundation is being laid for overhead equipment and catenary (system of wires suspended above the track that supplies power to electrically powered trains) from Kengeri to Bidadi. This would be extended all the way to Mysore.

Mr. Verma said the cost of electrification would be Rs. 69.5 crore for the 139-km stretch between Bangalore and Mysore at the rate of Rs. 50 lakh per km. The electrification project is being handled by the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), Allahabad.

Mr. Verma, who interacted with presspersons during the 56th Railway Week celebrations here on Tuesday, said that the authorities wanted to commence work from the Mysore side as well but this might be postponed as it was pointless to complete electrification before the track-doubling work was completed in the section between Mysore and Mandya. It has been argued that it will be more fruitful to take up electrification from Kengeri and extend it to Bidadi, Ramanagaram, Channapatana, Maddur and Mandya concurrently with the track-doubling work, rather taking up electrification in patches.

He said that if electrification was taken up from Kengeri-Bidadi towards Mysore side, then there was a possibility of running electric trains at least in that section as the track-doubling work had been completed till Channapatana and the work between Shettihalli and Maddur would be completed by the end of the current financial year.

Meanwhile, the track-doubling work on the entire stretch between Mysore and Bangalore is expected to be completed by December 2012 or early 2013 provided the land acquisition in Mandya is expedited, according to Mr. Verma.

He said the Railways had enough land for track doubling but there were stretches or points where land acquisition was necessitated for taking up yard work for shunting. The land acquisition issue was a hurdle in Mandya district but there were no problems in other districts, Mr. Verma added.

But the delay in land acquisition had not slowed down the ongoing civil works. Work on the Cauvery Bridge North and South at Srirangapatna was going on rapidly.

IIT valuation

He said the sub-structure work of the two bridges across the Cauvery was almost ready and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras was valuating it. Once approved, tenders would be invited and the work on the super structure would commence. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Dayanand Sadhu and other senior officials were present.

New soap opera from Mysore Sandal

Mahesh Kulkarni / Bangalore May 8, 2011, 0:53 IST

India’s cricket heartthrob Mahendra Singh Dhoni may have stumped Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KS&DL) by not turning up for an advertisement shoot, but instead of nursing a heart ache, the maker of the cult Mysore Sandal soap has moved on and charted out its own global strategy.

Clearly, this state PSU will not throw the baby with the bathwater!

The company, known for its soap based on pure sandalwood oil is all set to launch its own super premium toilet soap — Mysore Sandal Millennium — for the uber luxe set in June this year. The soap is likely to be positioned in the price range of Rs 500-630, which is 10-12 times more than the most expensive soap available in India.
The other expensive soap brand sold in India is Mysore Sandal Gold, priced at Rs 60 for a 75-gram bar. The nearest competition to it is Hindustan Unilever’s Dove, which is priced below it.

“KS&DL is already the only company to sell premium soaps in the country. Now we are launching super premium soap for the first time in India. Our aim is to compete with international players like Hermes of France,” company sources close to the development told Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

The toilet soap market in India is divided into four price segments — premium, popular, discount and economy. KS&DL is present in the premium soap category with a bouquet of a dozen soaps. The premium soap category in India is estimated at over 15 per cent of the total soap market at about Rs 10,000 crore. Other soaps in the premium category are Dove, Vivel, Mysore Sandal Gold and Lux.

The 91-year old PSU, with a turnover of Rs 200 crore, holds 7 per cent share in the premium soap market. With the launch of Mysore Sandal Millennium soap, KS&DL, which is known world over for its pure sandalwood oil based toilet soaps, hopes to further enhance its market share in the luxury bath soap market.

Many doubt if KS&DL has the necessary bandwidth to pull this off. "I have my own doubts about how well KS&DL will manage to sell a luxury soap in the Indian and international markets. Do they have the marketing budget and distribution strength?" said Anand Dikshit, executive director, corporate finance & investment banking, PwC.

Chitrangda Kapur, analyst with Angel Broking, acknowledges that Mysore Sandal Gold is the only premium soap in the country that is ahead of competition. "KS&DL is the only soap maker that uses pure sandalwood oil, which is good for skin. While HUL's Dove, which uses mostly moisturisers, comes below Mysore Sandal."

KS&DL is test marketing 'Millennium' in Karnataka and aims to launch the soap in June this year. It has tested the soap in France for dermatological safety studies and Corneometry and Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) test as per international standards.

'Millennium' has been developed by KS&DL at its in-house research and development wing over the last two years. The soap is developed using natural Mysore sandalwood oil as a cosmetic and therapeutic ingredient offered to the customers on par with REACH, an European agency to certify safe use of chemicals, and FDA standards.

The soap is derived from pure vegetable oil base, added with conditioners, moisturisers, Vitamin E, Jajoba-Mimosa-Sunflower seed waxes, Shea-butter, almond oil, hydrolysed milk protein, stabilising agents etc, enriched with pure and natural Mysore sandalwood oil based fragrance added with natural essential oils Vetivert, Guaicwood, Patchouli, Geranium, Petitgrain, Orange, Cedarwood, Palmrosa, clove among others.

"We have incurred an expenditure of Rs 7-8 lakh per tonne for this soap. We have used some of the best perfumes apart from our own Mysore sandalwood oil," company sources said.

The company has also designed a special packaging for the soap. It will be stretch-wrapped in polyfilm to retain the precious fragrance and visibility of the product. It will be packed in unique carton, with self-locking flip lid at the top.

"We studied some of the expensive soaps available internationally, like Hermes of France, which is sold at Rs 1,400 per piece in India, before designing our new soap. We also engaged a Paris-based firm for carrying out the test there," company sources said.

Apart from 'Millennium', KS&DL is also planning brand and product extensions through new launches of shampoos, shikakai soap and body wash this year.

Kabini project to be over by year end

MYSORE: The emerging mini-metro's brand value is set to soar. After some key infrastructure development projects, including converting Outer Ring Road (ORR) into six lanes are put on track, now the Kabini drinking water project has got lucky. The Rs 108-crore JNNURM project that was derailed over land acquisition will end by December.

The project that is designed to fetch water for fast growing south-western parts of the city, projected to house 20 lakh population by 2036, will get 12 million gallons per day (MGD) when it is completed this year-end allowing for development of newly developed layouts. Groundwork for jackwell is on at the bank of Kapila river, 35-km pipeline is laid and construction of water treatment plants is in the final stages.

The construction of a jackwell at Bidirugud to lift water was held up owing to farmers' protest over land compensation. The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) has convinced the farmers that they will be paid the compensation by May-end. The site is 40 km downstream Kapila river at Kabini in Heggadadevanakote and close to the location from where Cauvery water is lifted for Bangalore's use.

District minister S A Ramdas accompanied by mayor Pushpalatha and corporation commissioner K S Raykar inspected the spot on Monday and told the land losers he would get the compensation released before month-end. "Leave that to me," Ramdas told Kempegowda, one of the eight farmers whose land is being acquired. Ramdas is holding a meeting with revenue officials on May 12 to discuss the compensation issue.

Raykar told The Times of India that the issue is pending with the government and they have deposited Rs 1.40 crore for land acquisition. There were many issues involved like the price for land. While Rs 25 lakh per acre was sought, the government rejected it, he explained.

In all, eight acres has been acquired from the farmers including 2 acres for the jackwell, which will have a sluice gate to get supply.

Electric fencing for palace

MYSORE: A year ahead of its centenary, the Mysore Palace is being made safer for visitors. The Amba Vilas Palace will get electric fencing at its five entry points. The Rs 1.25 crore project is being implemented after the Mysore Palace Board headed by a chief secretary gave its assent to enhance security some time ago. The work was allotted some 10 months ago. The fencing should be through by month-end, an official attached to the Board told The Times of India. This comes two years after the tourist spot was invested with a surveillance system to check entry and exit of vehicles and scan tourists.

The Electronics Corporation of India, which got the surveillance system, is installing the electric fencing along the fort. The control room set up for the surveillance will man the outer periphery of the Palace too. The city police, who guard the landmarks of the city, will man the control room.

In the aftermath of nabbing some members of the Pakistan-based Al-badr in November 2005, security at the palace was tightened. During the interrogation, the police found that the duo had done recee of vital installations in the city and in Bangalore. Three years ago, during Dasara festivities, the Central Industrial Security Force was deployed around the palace and it was assigned to man the entry point. The high security zone was converted into a fortress during the Dasara procession.

A new facility with uninterrupted power supply is aimed to thwarting illegal entry over the fort wall. The fence will be supplied with 220 volt power. In case of illegal entry, the alarm will ring alerting the police. The facility is designed to detect the area in the fort where the is forceful entry.

Four-day meet on Indian Heritage Cities Network begins

Mysore among six cities selected under heritage-friendly master plan

Mysore, May 14, DHNS :

Minister for Urban Development S Suresh Kumar on Saturday said that the government has plans to draw heritage-friendly master plan for select six cities in the state.

He was speaking after inaugurating third biennial conference of the Indian Heritage Cities Network at Infosys campus, Hootagalli in the city.

The four day meet has been organised jointly by UNESCO, New Delhi, Indian Heritage Cities Network Foundation (IHCNF), Mysore City Corporation and Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Ltd., (KUIDFC).

The minister said the afore said plans will cover- Mysore, Srirangapatna, Bidar, Kittur, Bijapur and Gulbarga.

Also, to make a concrete start in conservation of heritage buildings, heritage will be made a component while preparing city development plan (CDP) by urban local bodies.

Saying that the tourism co-exists with heritage, the minister said Mysore is one such city, whose heritage structures attract tourists in hordes, both domestic and foreign.

He appealed to the Mysoreans to take pride in protecting such structures for future generation. He termed the opening of IHCNF office at the good old building opposite Fire Brigade in Saraswathipuram, as a strange coincidence.

The building that dates back to the time of Maharaja’s, has many untold stories in its womb to tell and the foundation has made a good beginning by selecting the place.

Medical Education and District In-charge Minister S A Ramdas said plans are on the anvil to form a committee towards conservation of heritage and distribute books on heritage to tourist guides to facilitate tourists with accurate information.

He said that the protection of heritage is equal to protecting lost glory. Saying that Mysore alone has 236 heritage buildings, the minister said that the government is taking steps to protect the same- tangible and intangible.

UNESCO representative from New Delhi, Takahiko Makino said that the good public transport helps sustenance of the city, besides heritage that could propel country’s economy.

IHCN-F advisor MInja Yang said owning a car is no more a luxury in western countries, when compared to India, where it has become a symbol of success. She disclosed that UNESCO will be hosting a seminar on ‘Historic landscape’ in December.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the State Government, IHCN-F, MCC and District Administration on heritage conservation.

Mayor Pushpalatha T B Chikkanna, Deputy Mayor M J Ravikumar, Additional Chief Secretary Subhir Hari Singh, Secretary Shambu Dayal Meena, KUIDFC MD Aravind Srivastava, Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta and others were present.

A walk through Mysore's architectural heritage

Special Correspondent

http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/16/images/2011051655690201.jpg
Participants at Indian Heritage City Network conference were taken around Mysore on Sunday.
MYSORE: For those attending the biennial conference of the Indian Heritage City Network (IHCN), learning about Mysore's architectural heritage proved to be an interesting part of their visit.

The participants, numbering 40, were taken around the core heritage zone of the city on Sunday, starting at K.R. Circle, whose symmetrical structure and grand circle form an integral part of Mysore's town planning.

The next stop was the famous Devaraja Market, which is nearly 125 years old and has at least 700 shops.

A local guide accompanying the team gave a brief description of the places they visited and their historical importance.

But the tour did not confine itself to viewing the external façade, and the members had a glimpse of the interiors where the wholesale trade of Mysore incense and Mysore jasmine, as well as vegetables and other horticultural produce, take place at the city's thriving, living heritage structure. The delegates were also taken to view the outer structure of K.R. Hospital, which is one of the earliest hospitals built in India for allopathic medicine. The imposing European-style structure was admired by the participants, who were taken around another major landmark in Mysore whose foundation stone was laid by the then Prince of Wales in 1906 — the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts. The delegates had a glimpse of the ayurveda college in the vicinity before proceeding to the Niranjan Math, where Swami Vivekananda stayed during his monthlong sojourn in Mysore as the guest of the then Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wadiyar.

The heritage walk was organised by the Mysore City Corporation, in association with the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation and the UNESCO.

Keeping the heritage city tag intact

MYSORE: Some of the time tested best practices for conservation and showcasing of heritage will be implemented in Mysore. The UNESCO will facilitate their transfer partnering between some of the European cities and the Mysore City Corporation. The Indian Heritage Cities Network Foundation (IHCN-F), which has now shifted its headquarters to Mysore, will help in this mission. The IHCN-F, an offshoot of UNESCO, will extend crucial expertise in regeneration of heritage.

"There are some proposals and we are examining them. We will collaborate and help the city to retain its status," UNESCO's senior executive Nicole Bolomey said on Monday. Corporation commissioner K S Raykar has got invitation to visit some of the cities in France including Paris to study and implement various measures adopted there. The collaboration between the heritage cities is the end result of the third biennial meet of the IHCN-F that is on here.

Bolomey told reporters that the UN-body has devised some tools to retain the heritage nature of the cities and wants to put them to use here. Raykar said the MCC will sign MoUs with other heritage cities to implement heritage-centric plans. "We will exchange best practices," he said. Experts from Europe and Southeast Asia are attending the meet that is focusing on mobility in heritage cities.

IHCN-F chairman Rathi Vinay Jha said time has come for conservation of heritage and India cannot afford not to focus on it.

Conservation is priority

The rules and regulations to govern heritage monuments are ready and will be notified shortly. Raykar, who was part of the team that devised the draft rules as the joint-secretary in the urban development department, said it does not require amendments to existing laws. They are ready for notification, he stated adding that conservation is recognised as a priority sector now.

For a city renowned as a tourist destination and with nearly 200 identified heritage structures, it is ironical that the first of the tourism and heritage development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) is being taken up at the fag end of the mission.

The JNNURM was launched in 2005 and Mysore was among the 63 urban centres initially identified as a beneficiary city and qualified for special grants and funding from the Union Government on the strengths of its heritage and tourism characteristics.

Of the 63 cities, Mysore was one of the 10 cities selected for renewal of urban heritage as it plays an important role in the socio-economic and cultural profile of the city. Hence a concept plan was conceived to suggest measures to utilise heritage and reshape and revitalise the economy and culture of Mysore. The thrust of the concept plan, as explained in the executive summary of the detailed project report, was to use heritage as an important leverage to improve the quality of life.

Slow beginning

Yet, despite the tall claims, it took the local authorities more than six years to conceive a project that was in tune with the City Development Plan submitted for JNNURM which delineated the “Vision” for the development of Mysore.

As the CDP noted, “Mysore aspires to be an international destination for cultural, spiritual, natural and religious tourism based on the history associated with the town, traditional cultural events and by retaining the historical character and conserving the built and natural heritage”.

But as the cliché goes, it is better late than never and with less than year to go for the deadline for all JNNURM projects in the country to terminate, the foundation stone was laid to improve the core heritage areas of Mysore last week. The project envisages an outlay of Rs.39.45 crore to give a facelift to the palace and its surroundings including Town Hall.

The project was conceived by the Department of Tourism and the Mysore City Corporation [MCC] is implementing it. As per the project details prepared by STUP Consultants, Bangalore, the key interventions in the conservation area are controlled parking, enhancement of public spaces, protection and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings and monuments, provision of street furniture, signage and information for tourists and presenting a unified image of the heritage precinct surrounding the palace.

Road widening

Under the project the roads circling the palace and the Fort will be widened and this includes the road starting from Hardinge Circle, around the southern gate of Palace till K.R.Circle. As such, a portion of the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road hugging the palace, the road in front of the main palace gate, the road behind Gun House till Rachaiah Circle covering both Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Circle and Basaveshwara Circle, and the stretch from Rachiah Circle to K.R.Circle will be widened and the footpaths improved and embellished for the benefit of pedestrians and tourists.

The selection of the stretch is important as it has several heritage structures including Amba Vilas Palace, Town Hall, Clock Tower, K.R. Circle, Chamaraja Circle, Gun House, Lansedown Building and Jaganmohan Palace, some of which are progressively being devalued due to overgrowth and congestion and hence an intervention is imperative.

The first stretch comprising a portion of the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road will have two carriageways separated by a median for the smooth movement of tongas for which Mysore is renowned, apart from providing information kiosks with telephone facilities, toilet blocks, seating arrangements along the signages, drinking water kiosks, food kiosks and dustbins at strategic locations. The second stretch opposite the main palace gate too will have similar facilities in addition to a platform for live craft display.

The third stretch of the road starting from Gun House to Shivaratri Rajendra Circle will have special lighting in addition to the above mentioned facilities. The fourth stretch will also incorporate the above elements.

Kiosks

The proposed kiosks will provide digital city information service, act like a normal information signpost with directions to places of interests and amenities and provide touch-screen city information and Internet services, according to the STUP project.

A key component of the project is the installation of heritage-styled designed lamp posts. The original plan entailed installing 132 lamp posts at a spacing of 35 metres each and the design of the lamp posts as also the barricades will be drawn after studying the classical patterns in the palace.

There will be a specially designed police control cabin while seating arrangements around the palace has been proposed and seats will be installed at a distance of every 60 metres all through the four stretches.

Another critical aspect of the project is enhancement of public spaces and it will include embellishing the pedestrian pathways around the palace.

The deadline for the completion of the project is May 2012 but given the pace of JNNURM works in the city, one is not sure when the work will end. It also remains to be seen if the earlier proposal to develop the squares and circles in the core heritage areas of Mysore on the lines of Paris city square will bear fruit. While the civic works will go a long way in beautifying the core zone, it also remains to be seen if the MCC has the will to ban the advertising and commercial hoardings in the region.

Amphitheatre

The second important component of the heritage revitalisation plan pertains to the development of Town Hall and its surrounding areas. The plan is to have an open air amphitheatre for performing arts, and create parking space in the basement to decongest the area surrounding Town Hall and Chamaraja Circle.

The improvement to Town Hall also includes enhancing the interiors of the auditorium, improving its acoustics and installation of an illumination system to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building.

While the Union Government has sanctioned the project and will contribute Rs.31.56 crore, the State Government will contribute Rs.3.945 crore and the Tourism Department, another Rs.3.945 crore.

The original plan submitted by the authorities was for Rs.64 crore but it was revised by the central sanctioning and monitoring committee of the JNNURM.

Guys what do you all think about this project? Road around the palace is set for a facelift. Are you expecting big or....? :P

I measured the distance around the palace it comes out to roughly 3 Km,The stretch from Hardinge circle to Chamrajendra wadiyar circle(Victor Albert road) is a part of 4.5 km Raja marga. So both the concepts(core heritage and raja marga) have clashed on this particular stretch.Need to see how they go about on that.
Note that Victor Albert road is set to have a median as it does not lie on the procession route.Don't you all think that a median in place would mar the beauty of this road???

Your thoughts on this please :P I am not able to distinguish between Raja Marga and Heritage core project when it comes to road sprucing.

DEVARAJA MARKET RENOVATION: UNESCO TEAM TALKS TO MCC COMMR.

Mysore, May 18 (RK&DV)-A UNESCO team held discussions with MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar today with regard to Devaraja Market renovation.

At the meeting held in the Old Council Hall from 8 am to 10 am, UNESCO Programme Co-ordinator Shalini Mahajan; UNESCO Representative Nicole Bolomey; Indian Heritage Cities Network (IHCN) Chairperson Rathi Vinay Jha; Nisha Naidu of UNESCO and other officials were present.

During the meeting, several issues like retaining the outer structure of the market, demolishing the inner structure and constructing a well-equipped market, were discussed. It was brought out at the meeting that the market building, which is 125 years old, has outlived its life. It is in a dilapidated condition and due to rains during 2005, the eastern side of the building had collapsed at some places, as it was built using fragile Kadapa stones and other materials.

It was recalled that the Torsteel Foundation, a construction organisation, had inspected the market on Feb. 20, 2006 and suggested that the market be reconstructed. A Detailed Project Report has also been prepared based on the suggestions put forth at the meeting.

UNESCO to assist in restoring Devaraja Market

MoU signed between UNESCO and stakeholders, including State Government, MCC
MYSORE: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is set to lend a hand in efforts to renovate and restore the 125-year-old Devaraja Market and surrounding areas.

Commissioner of the Mysore City Corporation K.S. Raykar held a meeting with heritage representatives from UNESCO and Rathi Vinay Jha, Chairperson of the Indian Heritage City Network (IHCN) here on Wednesday.

“We had a marathon meeting and it has been decided to go ahead with the restoration and conservation of Devaraja Market and its precincts,” said Mr. Raykar.

He said that an MoU was signed between UNESCO and different stakeholders, including the State Government, the State Heritage Department and the MCC. As per the MoU, surrounding structures, including K.R. Circle and Dufferin Clock Tower will be developed, according to Mr. Raykar.

“The MCC has been advised to conduct a socio-economic survey of hawkers and people living in the vicinity. This will be taken up immediately so as to be ready with the information before June 30 when a workshop will be conducted to fine-tune the process,” said Mr. Raykar.

According to Mr. Raykar, UNESCO representatives Nicole Bolomy and Shalini Mahajan have looked into the preparations by the MCC and they want additional technical inputs to be provided for the development of the area. The façade of the existing structure will be retained while the interior shops will be renovated. The renovation and the restoration of the Devaraja Market will commence by October this year.

The MCC had secured clearance from the councillors a few months ago to take up restoration of Devaraja and Vani Vilas markets and lease it to traders.

Though the renovation of the Devaraja Market will be overseen by UNESCO, the MCC will take up the restoration of the market. The development of the Vani Vilas Market and the Lancedown Building will be taken by the State Heritage Department.

Prestige to set up more 'Forum' malls

Hrithik Kiran Bagade, Bangalore, May 19, DHNS:

The retail infrastructure arm of Prestige Group, on Wednesday, said that it is eyeing expansion of its mid to upper-mid market shopping centre concept ''Forum'', by setting up Forums in Hyderabad, Mangalore, Mysore and Kochi.

It is also constructing another Forum mall in Bangalore and one in Chennai, which will come up in early 2012. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Prestige Group CEO (Retail) S Raghunandhan said that the Forum concept is at the core of Prestige Retail’s business and the company is constantly aiming at expansions and improvements. Raghunandhan also explained about the unique value proposition that Prestige has conceptualised by establishing shopping centres positioned as “Value Malls” in a bid to provide greater value-for-money shopping to consumers.

Presently, the company has a single Forum Value Mall at Whitefield in the city, set up in 2009, under a joint venture between Prestige Group and Singapore-based CapitaL and Retail Limited.

The value concept offers premium outlet shopping, with more emphasis on greater value for money. Like any other conventional mall, it offers big brands, food courts and a multiplex, but all these offer products and services at a more moderate rate to consumers.

Terming it as a community shopping experience, Raghunandhan said, “Whitefield was chosen for the mall considering its proximity to the IT hub, prevalance of exclusive gated communities and a sizeable expat community residing there, along with favourable cost of real estate.”

He added that the mall has more than 100 brands’ outlets, with a large number of them being factory outlets too. According to him though the mall concept in india is at a nascent stage, organised retailing will eventually grow.

DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/162401/prestige-set-up-more-forum.html)

Why have they just barricaded their site in Mysore? I don't see any construction activity going on,corret me if I am wrong saw that site months back.

Prestige has started works in Mangalore, don't know about Kochi.

Future beckons: The change in the demographic profile and population density could impact spatial growth of Mysore

For a city that was listed as the second cleanest in the country after Chandigarh in a survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Urban Development, here is something more to chew and ponder over.

Mysore has been given a high rating in the “AlphaWise City Vibrancy Index: A Guide to India's Urbanisation” by Morgan Stanley India. Sheela Rathi and Ridham Desai of Morgan Stanley India, who are the authors of the study, pointed out that the Index is a measure of the drivers of urbanisation and incorporates key ingredients such as infrastructure, job opportunities, modern consumer services and the city's ability to mobilise savings. The index reveals the relative “vibrancy”/urbanisation levels of 200 cities and towns of India and could be used to ascertain the prospects for real estate prices.

“But the biggest surprise of the launch product”, according to Sheela Rathi and Ridham Desai, is that Mysore is ranked number two among India's 50 cities. The report pointed out that urbanisation was a big driver of sector trades and measuring the levels of drives and rate of change in urbanisation is important from this perspective.

The survey on the vibrancy index of India's cities is expected to provide the levels of urbanisation and the rate of change and thus help investors with prospective sectors and is a measure of key ingredients including financial penetration, consumer services and job listings apart from physical infrastructure, according to Sheetal Rathi and Ridham Desai.

The survey findings are expected to provide insights into the rate of change of urbanisation and its impact on various sectors and stocks. The study points out that urbanisation is a multi-stage process because it involves movement from village to cities and change from agricultural occupation to business, trade, services and profession apart from changes in the migrants' attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviour patterns.

Facilities such as education, healthcare, employment avenues, civic facilities, recreation, consumer services and increasing avenues for savings are the reasons for urbanisation, according to the authors. And Mysore scores high on all these factors. Mysore has been rated number 1 in consumption pattern and financial services penetration, beating Meerut, Nashik, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Jodhpur etc though it does not figure in the top 10 cities for job opportunities.

Winds of change

The findings of the study matches the winds of change sweeping Mysore which is set to emerge in the new list of cities with a million-plus population as per the latest census and hence will qualify for the “metropolitan” tag. This, according to officials, will means additional funds to shore up its infrastructure and services which in turn, will further drive the process of urbanisation and hence its implications on the real estate scenario can hardly be over-emphasised. While mere population alone does not imply growth or urbanisation, Mysore has other drivers such as education, quality of life, financial services, recreational facilities, medicare, a booming retail market, entertainment facilities etc to make it a prospective city with a future. The change in the demographic profile and population density could impact spatial growth of Mysore, resulting in vertical development affecting real estate.

Mysore's proximity to Bangalore and the spill-over impact of that city, the impending completion of the railway track doubling work along with electrification which will reduce the commuting time between the two cities to about 100 minutes, the improved road connectivity etc are expected to contribute to the economic dynamism of the city and effect the democratic profile of Mysore. The prospects of people living in Mysore and working in Bangalore [where the earning prospects are higher] can spur demand and propel real estate development in Mysore in the medium to long run.

The Vibrancy Index report and Mysore's high ranking is an indicator to the changes in the offing and should offer a key to those keen to invest in real estate in Mysore.

The show will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; while the ticket for adults is Rs 40, it will be Rs. 25 for children.
MYSORE: The controversy-hit sound and light ( son et lumiere) show at the Mysore Palace, whose launch was delayed or put off following “rift” over its script and other technical issues, is finally being launched here on Friday at 7.30 p.m.

Following “approval” from Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the scion of the Mysore royal family, and the Department of Tourism, to the “revised script”, the Mysore Palace Board, the caretaker of the palace, is launching the show in association with Innovative Lighting System Corporation, which executed the project.

The show will be held three days a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The ticket for adults is Rs 40 and Rs. 25 for children aged between 7 and 15 years. If public holidays fall on the show days, the show will not be held, according to the Palace Board.

The show in Kannada version will be launched on Friday and the shows in Hindi and English are likely to follow.

The show was suspended immediately after it was launched by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on January 3, 2009, following exception taken by Mr. Wadiyar over the script, lighting and audio of the show.

The original script had been written by linguist Lingadevaru Halemane, which was opposed by Mr. Wadiyar. Following this, a three-member committee of experts headed by historian Suryanath Kamath was appointed to make modifications to the script.

Nevertheless, another committee, under Sebastian Joseph of the Department of History in the University of Mysore, was formed to examine the revised script in view of Mr. Wadiyar's reported reservations, and recommend modifications for suitable incorporation.

Palace Board Deputy Director P.V. Awaradi made the presentation of the script that was revised again. Mr. Wadiyar had sought overhauling of the audio and the lighting aspect of the programme. The members of the expert panel visited Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Golconda Fort in Andhra Pradesh to examine the sound and light shows there. Thereafter, the technical issues in lighting and other issues had been addressed, the sources added.

Mysore gets another attraction added to its kitty.

Fresh proposal for Kukkarahalli lake

Shankar Bennur
MYSORE: Finally, the University of Mysore has come out with some “grand” proposals to rejuvenate and beautify Kukkarahalli lake, Mysore city's prime lung space.

The lake was restored and beautified a few years ago, using funds from the Asian Development Bank. However, following the civic authorities' apathetic attitude towards its upkeep, the lake lapsed back into its previous condition. The lake is facing the threat of losing its beauty due to the flow of untreated sewage and the blockage of inlets for rainwater.

It once attracted a large number of birds, with around 20,000 various species making its surroundings their home. But, in recent years, the winged visitors have been staying away due to water contamination.

The university, the custodian of the lake, has been vested with the responsibility of reviving the lake's charm. With the Government allocating Rs. 3 crore in the budget for its rejuvenation, the university has proposed to revive the lake and its environs with various measures.

If everything goes according to the plan, a bamboo diversity park and a botanical garden will come up in the lake environs.

Besides creating a buffer zone for safeguarding the lake, the university has proposed to restore the Poornaiah Nala which brings freshwater to the water body, university sources said.

In order to give the lake a new lease of life and to bring more freshwater, desilting has been proposed. It has also been proposed to improve its bund and protect its boundaries with chain link fencing and compound wall.

250-bed district hospital proposed
hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/21/stories/2011052150650300.htm)

http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/21/images/2011052150650301.jpg

Waiting their turn:A 250-bed district hospital has been proposed in Mysore to ease pressure on K.R. Hospital, which has witnessed a rise in the number of patients.

MYSORE: With the population of Mysore district nearing 30 lakh and Mysore city's population touching 9.13 lakh according to the 2011 Census, the demand for public healthcare services is on the rise.

The Krishnarajendra (KR) Hospital, an 800-bed autonomous hospital attached to the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) providing multi-speciality care, is said to be under pressure following the increase in the number of patients from the district as well as neighbouring districts visiting it.

Awaiting approval

Bearing in mind the need for public healthcare facilities to match the rising population, the district administration has proposed a 250-bed government hospital in Mysore and is awaiting the government's approval.

Disclosing this to The Hindu, District Surgeon Vamdev said the number of beds had to be proportionate to the number of patients, and the need of the hour was a second district hospital under the Government.

Interest

The proposal was brought to the notice of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa when he held a meeting here recently to review the progress of works undertaken by various departments. The Chief Minister had promised to examine the proposal, said Dr. Vamdev, who is member-secretary of the committee that monitors the functioning of taluk government hospitals in the district.

“Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who heads the committee, has shown interest in the new hospital project,” Dr. Vamdev said.

The proposed district hospital with tertiary care facilities is being demanded in the absence of such facilities in the taluk hospitals.

Lab proposed

A Regional Diagnostic Laboratory (RDL) to conduct tests for communicable and non-communicable diseases has been proposed under the PPP model. The facility shall work as a central lab with round-the-clock services. The hospitals in districts under Mysore division can utilise the laboratory's services as facilities for testing diseases such as A(H1N1) (swine flu), chikungunya and dengue are not available there, according to Dr. Vamdev.

“The district labs are not fully equipped to conduct tests for diseases such as swine flu, although they are currently being upgraded. There is a physiology department at K.R. Hospital which conducts complex diagnostic tests, but a laboratory fully equipped and dedicated to complex diagnostic tests using state-of-the-art equipment has become essential,” the District Surgeon argued.

Dr. Vamdev said the land for establishing the RDL could be provided at the old Epidemic Diseases (ED) hospital at Tilak Nagar here.

“If the Government gives its approval for an RDL here, it can be requested to provide polymerised chain-reaction (PCR) clinical diagnostic facilities at the lab,” he stated.

CITY GETS NEW PARKING SPACE

5-acre plot of Dasara Expo ground cleared for temporary parking

Caption: Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chairman B.P. Manjunath issuing vehicle parking tickets to motorists at the Expo ground this morning while Karnataka Zoo Authority Chairman N. Nanjundaswamy, former Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Exhibition Authority CEO M.V. Hemanth Kumar and others look on.

Mysore, May 22 (KMC&KK)- With the vehicle parking problem in city getting bigger by the day, especially around the Palace and the Zoo — the most-frequented tourist attractions — the District Administration today eased the situation considerably by opening up a five-acre plot of land in the heart of the city for parking tourist vehicles.

The vacant plot of land belonging to Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) near Ittigegud Gate was cleared of weeds and dense undergrowth, facilitating the parking of about 200 heavy motor vehicles, 300 light motor vehicles and nearly 800 two-wheelers, starting today. The cleared space is part of a 12-acre plot of land belonging to the KEA.

The decision to clear the area for parking was taken up at a meeting of the District Administration headed by Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta. City Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal, KEA Chairman B.P. Manjunath, Karnataka Zoo Authority Chairman N. Nanjundaswamy and others were present.

This meeting follows an earlier inspection of the plot conducted by the then Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Manjunath and other officials during Jan. 2011, who had then identified the plot as an ideal alternative for vehicle parking.

The plot will be used as a temporary parking space till the multi-level parking complex near the Zoo entrance, work on which is in progress, is completed.

The KEA will be collecting parking fees of Rs. 50 per bus, Rs. 30 per mini-bus or tempo, Rs. 10 each for light motor vehicles and Rs. 5 each for two-wheelers.

Additional Traffic Police personnel were deputed in front of the Zoo and the Palace to divert tourist vehicles towards the new parking space.

With this measure, traffic jams and road-blocks in front of the residences near the Zoo will become a problem of the past, it is hoped.

K.R. Nagar to be made heritage town
Hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/24/stories/2011052455310300.htm)

MYSORE: Krishnaraja Nagar (K.R. Nagar) in Mysore district will be developed as a heritage town to commemorate its 75th anniversary.

The decision was taken at a meeting here on Monday, in which Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta and S.R. Mahesh, K.R. Nagar MLA, participated.

A committee of heritage experts, including Deputy Director of the Department of Heritage Gayatri and professors of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Mysore, will be formed. The members will visit the town and submit its report on how best it can be presented as a model town.

A blueprint will be prepared to conserve heritage structures, such as old irrigation canals and temples.

The meeting also decided to retain the old taluk office building, which was to be demolished to make way for a new mini-Vidhana Soudha. The building will be renovated at a cost of Rs. 2 crore.

K.R. Nagar was conceived by the then king Nalwudi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in 1935 during the construction of the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir on the outskirts of Mysore. The old township of Yedathore was remodelled and developed by the maharaja.

Mysore, May 24 (KMC&KK)- The process of enriching the city Zoo on the lines of the world famous Singapore Zoo has already been launched by the Zoo authorities in which installation of attractive signboards, easily understandable location maps and pamphlets to guide through the Zoo without leaving out any of the enclosures will be taken up.

Zoo Director K.B. Markandaiah told Star of Mysore this morning that the novel features to be incorporated in the Zoo to make it more attractive for the tourists and the local regular visitors, especially children, are based on the experience of Zoo Deputy Director Vijay Kumar, who recently visited the Singapore Zoo and conducted a study.

"The project estimate to install the new signboards is Rs. 2 lakh. That apart, educative boards displaying information about the animals, birds and reptiles will be placed prominently in order to create awareness among the visitors about the need for environmental conservation and maintaining ecological balance," he said, adding that the information will be in English and Kannada languages.

"As part of the project, enrichment of Zoo enclosures will be taken up, which is intended to create the best possible natural environment within the enclosure like providing tree branches, rocks, plants, perches etc. The ancient structures in the Zoo that were during the time of the Maharajas will be retained as heritage structures and will be displayed for visitors to learn about the history of the Zoo," he said.

The walk-through aviary is also going to get a facelift, he added.

There are also plans to modernise the Zoo Shop and make it more attractive so that all those visiting the zoo return with memorabilia, Markandaiah said.

Route maps will be sold at a nominal cost of Rs. 2 or less, he said and added that more concrete benches will be installed all over the Zoo so that the visitors can relax and spend more time in the serene atmosphere.

Gangotri Glades

The Gangotri Glades is a picturesque ground on the campus of the University of Mysore. The Chamundi Hills provide an idyllic backdrop, the Kukkarahalli Lake is just a big-hit away and the ground itself has lovely trees ringing the boundary. In 1997, the KSCA entered into a 20-year agreement with the university to develop and maintain the ground as part of its efforts to promote the game in smaller centres. It was in 2007 that a new pavilion complex was constructed and the stadium got a facelift, making it fit to host Ranji Trophy matches. It hosted it's maiden first-class game in November that year, and was allotted the Ranji final in the 2009-10 season.

AUTOMATED ELECTRONIC GATE AT PALACE

http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=28463&type=news

Mysore, May 27 (KMC&RK)- Entry to the world-famous Mysore Palace is being modernised with a hi-tech touch. Automated electronic gadgets are being installed at the southern gate of the Palace.

The Germany-made automated gate, similar to the ones installed at metro stations, opens only when the visitor inserts the token meant for the purpose.

Till now, visitors had to buy tickets at the counter set up at the main gate and enter the Palace. But henceforth, tokens will be issued instead of tickets. At the entry point in Palace premises, each visitor will have to insert the token in the slot, which will enable the gate to open for a few seconds. It will get closed immediately after the visitor has passed.

This system avoids the laborious process of manually checking the tickets, verifying the number of visitors and other such works, according to Palace Board Deputy Director P.V. Avaradi.

Cost of the new system is around Rs. 24 lakh, he said, adding that the new gate will be functional in a week’s time.

Each token will be charged Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children.

The Board is contemplating on installing a similar system at the parking space, Avaradi said.

Janatha Bazaar, Mysore

This is kinda of land mark in the city of Mysore. This building is probably known only to old timer of Mysore. This is in front of the city bus stand. This was built probably during the times of the Mysore kings. Till recently it was rented out to a government owned super market(kinda) called Janatha Bazaar. Now it's in a dilapidated state and you can now see the cows grazing in the yard as in the photo.

DC PREFERS 'TRADITIONAL' DASARA: MOOTS MYSORE ZILLA UTSAV

Mysore, May 29 (KCU&RK)- Deputy Commissioner Harsha Gupta has suggested that more stress should be given to retain the traditional elements of Dasara festival and also has pointed out the necessity of organising a separate Zilla Utsav in February every year.

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/4989/imageasp.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/imageasp.jpg/)

In a report to the Government, Gupta pointed out that the traditional events like Jamboo Savari, Torchlight Parade, Poets' Meet, wrestling, sports events and cultural programmes were very appealing to the people and should be given top priority. "The funds allocated for Dasara should be utilised for the right purpose. Dasara should give a boost to tourism," he said in the report.

The DC pointed out that new events like Yuva Dasara, Raitha Dasara, Food Festival, Yoga Dasara, Air Show, Rural Dasara, Dasara Darshan, Skating and others too have been welcomed by the people. They could be separated and included in Mysore Zilla Utsav which could be organised during 2nd or 3rd week of February. The weather would be sunny and congenial for these events, unlike the rainy days of Dasara, claimed Gupta, requesting separate funding for the programmes by the Govt.

Referring to the usual muddle in issue of passes for viewing Jamboo Savari and Torch light Parade during Dasara, Gupta pointed out that several foreign tourists were deprived of viewing those exclusive and spectacular events. He suggested restricting the number of passes to only 50 per cent of seats and the rest made available through tickets. More transparency was needed in issuance of passes, he said.

Referring to the constitution of various Dasara Sub-Committees, Gupta pointed out that there were no proper yardsticks to choose office-bearers or members of Sub-Committees and was being done in a haphazard way, at the last moment.

Forming a separate Dasara Authority would be meaningful only after setting right the lacunae in the existing system, lest everything would be a waste. Instead of notifying every year, DC should be permanently designated as Special Dasara Officer for better co-ordination, the DC suggested in his report.

CITY BUS STAND WILL NOT BE SHIFTED, ASSURES MINISTER

Hi-tech bus stand at J.K. Grounds on the anvil

Mysore, May 30 (KCU)- Transport Minister R. Ashok has clarified that the City Bus Stand would not be shifted to any place for any reason.

Speaking to press persons prior to the inauguration of Transport Adalat at MMC&RI Platinum Jubilee Hall at J.K. Grounds here yesterday, Ashok said "The City Bus Stand was renovated at a cost of Rs. 13 crore under JNNURM and there is no proposal to shift that. The government is ready to construct a hi-tech bus stand at J.K. Grounds provided the land is handed over for the purpose. The location is very close to the Railway Station and will be very convenient to passengers."

Toll on Highways: Referring to the proposal to collect toll on roads, Ashok said that it would not apply to old roads which were existing but only to newly-constructed or developed roads under the PPP scheme.

Sand-mining: Continuing Ashok said "Sand-mining has become a mafia hindering its transportation. The new sand policy will establish more transparency and increase the revenue to the government to Rs. 150 crore from the present Rs. 5 crore. The opposition for the introduction of the new policy will be countered legally."

K R Nagar to be developed as heritage town

BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore May 31, 2011, 0:09 IST

Krishnaraja Nagar (K R Nagar), a town built by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar on modern lines in Mysore district and which is set to turn 75, will be developed as a heritage city.

Located on the banks of the Cauvery river in a rural setting, Yedathore, named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar, after the Mysore Maharaja developed it on modern lines in 1935, retains its old charm though ill-planned structures are coming up in the town.

A team has been set up to formulate an early plan for the comprehensive development of the heritage structures that still exist, such as the channels and temples, which though are facing dilapidation. On the banks of the Cauvery stands the Arkeshwara temple with a bathing ghat and stone mantap. The place is a picnic-cum-pilgrim spot for the rural folks.
The proposal mooted by local MLA S R Mahesh was discussed at a meeting of officials presided over by deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta.

After the meeting, he said it was proposed to obtain a special grant from the government and create additional facilities for visitors after developing the heritage spots and structures in the town.

A committee to develop the town, popularly known by its abbreviated name K R Nagar, as a heritage town has been set up. It comprises of deputy director of heritage J V Gayathri, Mysore City Corporation Heritage Cell officer Nisha Naidu, and professors concerned from the Mysore University.

Meanwhile, it is proposed to restore the old taluk office building instead of demolishing it to make way for a mini-Vidhana Soudha and retain it as a monument to Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the builder of the modern town of K R Nagar.

Apart from K R Nagar, it is also proposed to improve two heritage buildings in Mysore - the government house, one of the oldest structures in the city, and the Jala Darshini (Water View) guest house facing the Kukkarahalli tank, said the deputy commissioner.

Orders will be issued shortly for undertaking modernisation of the government house at Rs 2 crore and the Jala Darshini at a cost of Rs 1 crore, without damaging their heritage look. If not by Dasara, the two buildings will be readied by next year as the chief minister and minister in-charge of Mysore district have already approved the proposal, he said.

It has also been proposed to develop the Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry on similar lines as it is one of the oldest choultries built by the maharajas. It will be developed under the supervision of heritage experts.

Facilities like a canteen to provide traditional Mysore meals and eatables, an auditorium, and a compound wall would be created for the convenience of wedding parties, trainees and sportspersons camping here.

LINGAMBUDHI LAKE TO BE DEVELOPED AS TOURIST SPOT: FOREST MINISTER

http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=28508&type=news
Caption: Forest Minister C.H. Vijayashankar addressing officials at a meeting at Aranya Bhavan here yesterday.

Mysore, May 31 (KCU)- Forest Minister C.H. Vijayashankar has announced that Lingambudhi lake near Ramakrishnanagar here would be developed on the lines of Karanji Lake and transformed into a tourist spot.

Addressing a press meet at Aranya Bhavan in Ashokapuram here yesterday, Vijayashankar said "funds have been already released for the project which is underway at a pace and will be made available for localites and tourists shortly."

Continuing the Minister said "Rs. 2 crore from Chief Minister's special grant, Rs. 47 lakh from Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and Rs. 50 lakh from Mysore City Corporation (MCC) have been released for developing the lake. The waste water flowing into the lake will be treated before letting in. A lake in every district will be taken up for development. The Forest Department is bound to retain all the lakes in clean condition to preserve their sanctity."

"A Forest Heritage Centre will come up on 'Aloka', a spacious 550 acre area on the outskirts of the city which will showcase the forest environment system. It will be developed on the lines of Cubbon Park in Bangalore which will sure turn out into a popular spot for weekend retreat," the Minister said adding that a project is ready to build a compound at a cost of Rs. 1.75 crore.

"Then borewells will be dug, out of which 7 are ready yielding copious water. A 5 lakh litre capacity tank will be constructed to store water. A world class museum will come up there. All the proposed project of Forest Department will be implemented between June 20 and July 20. A 3-year action plan will also be drafted," he said.

The increased entry fee to National Parks and bird sanctuaries will be reviewed again as complaints have been pouring in. On no count any resort will be allowed to come up on forest land and a clear policy has been formulated to prevent any hydel project come up in the western ghats, the Minister added.

Bandipur safari fee reduction mooted

Forest Minister C.H. Vijayashankar announced here that the Government is mulling reduction of Bandipur National Park Safari fee. Addressing a press meet here yesterday, Vijayashankar, when asked about the multifold increase in safari fee, said the revenue earnings in Bandipur is utilised only for its development. However, there will be a rethink on fee hike and a decision in this regard will soon be announced, the Minister said.

Replying to another question, the Minister said no permission will be granted for the construction of new resorts in forests in the future and the government will resist pressure from any quarters in this regard.

The plan includes installation of pipeline, digging a borewell and developing the green cover in the area by planting saplings.

A protection wall and fencing will also be built around the lake at a cost of ` 60 lakh.
About ` two crore will be spent on desilting the lake, a wall to protect the lake from erosion and activities that will support rejuvenation.

Bogadi lake

Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will take up the task of developing and rejuvenating Bogadi lake, strengthening the bund, construction of catchment area and desilting.
Hinkal lake will be secured by means of fencing, and desilting of that lake will be done at a cost of ` 25 lakh drawn from Lake Rejuvenation Scheme funds and ` 25 lakh from Dasara funds.

Funds from the Lake Rejuvenation Scheme will also provide for ` one crore to divert the UGD line from Bommanahalli lake, erect fence around the area and desilting the lake.

Mysore City Corporation will develop Devanur lake with funds reserved for lake rejuvenation which will be used for development of catchment area, desilting, fencing, and necessary UGD lines to keep the water of the lake pristine and clear -- at a cost of ` four crore. Same facilities will be created at Kyatamaranahalli lake at ` one crore.

The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) is developing an industrial estate at Kadakola, near the Nanjangud industrial area, on Mysore-Ooty highway.

The estate is coming up in different survey number areas of the Kadakola village which is also connected by the Mysore-Chamarajanagar train. It has fixed the land cost at an ad hoc price of Rs 70 lakh an acre. Plots of 0.25 acre, 0.50 acre and 1 acre are ready to be allotted to small scale units whose investments are not above Rs 3 crore.

Industrialists interested in these plots should apply before May 31 to the KIADB Development Officer, Metagalli, Mysore, with the relevant documents. Along with their applications, they should also attach a demand draft for 7.5 per cent of the land value they propose to have, said the KIADB in a press release here

MADIKERI-SAMPAJE ROAD OPENS FOR TRAFFIC

http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=28529&type=newsMadikeri, June 2 (KMC)- The newly-constructed Madikeri-Sampaje road, a section of the Mysore-Bantwal highway project, was opened for traffic yesterday, despite incomplete works.

Kodagu Deputy Commissioner had banned the traffic movement on the 28 km of road to facilitate its repair from Jan. 1 to Apr. 30.

In-Charge DC K.M. Chandregowda inspected the road work yesterday.

However, the road works were stopped between Apr. 11 and 20, owing to untimely rains in the region. Hence, movement of vehicles was banned till May 31. However, owing to the shortage of jalli stones, work on the road could not be carried out in an expected speed. Of the 28 kms, only 18 km road work has been completed from Madikeri to Devarakolli.

The remaining 10 km stretch is yet to be completed. As the remaining 10 km road does not come under Ghat section, there is no need to ban traffic movement on the road now, said Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) engineer Shivakumar.

The remaining road work will be taken up after the monsoon and will be completed by April 2012, he said.

The pending work on the Mysore-Bantwal road is from the 88th km to the 117th km, that is from Madikeri town to Bhaga-mandala junction. Work completed is from the 121st km to 137.5 km. Work on the stretch of road from 137.5 km to 138.5 km will be completed in two days’ time, Shivakumar said.

With the ban on the movement of vehicles, the people from coastal districts were finding it difficult to reach Kodagu or Mysore.

To go to Mysore, one had to travel to Sampaje, then to Madikeri and then reach Mysore — a tedious experience, especially for those traveling by bus as they had to change buses at the three places.

JAYANAGAR HEALTH CENTRE UPGRADED AT A COST OF RS. 182 LAKH

Mysore, June 4 (RK&DM)- The Jayanagar Community Health Centre on 5th Main in Jayanagar, was recently upgraded from its nearly four-decade old status of a Primary Health Centre.

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/2858/imageaspq.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/37/imageaspq.jpg/)

The Community Health Centre is located on a 200x50 ft. area amidst ideal surroundings, with a park on the opposite side, a post office to its left and Balodyana English School behind it.

A Government Primary School and a public library adjoins the park. The Centre, functioning in the ground floor at present, is a 30-bedded maternity and gynaecology hospital.

The Centre features an emergency unit, an OPD Block, an Operation Theatre, Labour Unit, pre-and post-operative wards, pre- and post-labour wards, male and female wards, an X-ray unit, a laboratory, a pharmacy, an office room and a meeting hall.

The Health Centre is connected by road in all the four directions. The building was recently renovated under the Karnataka Health Systems Development and Improvisation Project.

The Centre is commonly visited by the residents of Jayanagar and surrounding areas, with nearly 150 OPD patients visiting it everyday and 10 to 15 deliveries taking place every month on an average.

At present, the Centre is headed by a Medical Officer, with a Gynaecologist, a Paediatrician and an Anaesthesiologist as specialist doctors, assisted by 6 nursing and 8 'D' Group staff.

The Centre has been upgraded at a cost of Rs. 182.66 lakh with works executed by Lanco Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad. The date for its inauguration has not been fixed.

With the upgradation, the Centre has been sanctioned 24 additional posts that is inclusive of Medical Officers, Lab Technicians and Nursing staff.

It may be recalled here that the JD(S) activists had staged a demonstration on Thursday in front of the Centre demanding immediate opening of the Centre which, though was constructed about two years ago, is yet to serve the public.

Will S.A. Ramdas, who is the District In-charge Minister representing KR Constituency under which the Health Centre comes, take initiative to open the Centre at least now?

She chooses clean Mysore for IVF centre

MYSORE: Octogenarian gynaecologist and pioneer in IVF techniques in India Dr Gunasheela is planning to set up a hi-tech IVF clinic in Mysore. Gunasheela has to her credit the birth of the first baby through the in-vitro egg maturation technique in India (sixth in the world). In an interview, she told The Times Of India why she chose Mysore. "Bangalore is becoming highly polluted, making maintenance of IVF centres a tough job as they require total pollution-free atmosphere." That says it all.

Excerpts:

Has treatment for infertility curbed the myths?

A: The situation has changed. People have realized that infertility can be treated to a great extent. Invasive infertility treatment is yielding good results. Only genetic infertility is proving tough. But IVF methods have come as a relief to childless couples.

How successful are IVF centres with the treatment still being unaffordable for many?

A: Fertility centres treat various infertilities. Only IVF methods are costly. Some infertilities can be treated with small invasive methods.

Keeping in mind the growing population and government's efforts to curb it how can IVF techniques succeed?

A: Having children is an emotional issue. How can you prevent a couple from having a child through IVF? Infertility is not an issue for the government. If we think in this direction, we will soon go the China way where childless elders are suffering in old age homes.

Why did you choose Mysore, a Tier II city, to establish the ultra modern IVF centre?

A: Bangalore is overcrowded and polluted. Though we have established a sophisticated IVF centre, stored semen, eggs and embryos they are prone to bacteria attacks due to infiltration of dust particles. Despite ultra modern techniques we are unable to prevent dust entering the storage points. One dust particle can affect stored egg or semen, spoiling the whole exercise.

Is Mysore a good choice? Will Mysoreans go for such costly facilities?

A: It depends on the facility and expertise. Most of my patients are from Punjab, Gujarat, Maldives and Singapore. People will come if they know about the facility and expertise. It is wrong to say that all treatments are costly. For instance, rural women turn infertile due to tuberculosis. If the affected parts like fallopian tubules are corrected, they can give birth to child.

What is the situation on the infertility front?

A: Infertility is increasing among Indians due to food habits and obesity. Any woman who becomes pregnant within 10 months of her marriage is considered fertile. Tuberculosis is the main cause for infertility among the poor and rural masses.

New museum to host milestones of theatre

MYSORE: A new museum in the city will house various works on the growth of Kannada theatre.

The facility being built by Rangayana, theatre repertoiry, will be educational too. The theatre repertory has decided to build the museum in the available land without waiting for the University of Mysore to respond to its plea for a plot abutting Rangayana. The collections by B V Karanth, doyen of Kannada theatre, will be housed in the museum.

"The B V Karanth Trust has said that it will hand them over to us once the building is ready," Rangayana director Lingadevaru Halemane said on Friday. The Ranga Samaj, the apex body governing activities of the repertory, has approved the project.

It was planned to build the museum at a plot in Kukkarahalli Lake abutting Rangayana but the varsity has not decided on the land. It has decided to go ahead with the available land, Halemane told reporters. It will also house a library. We are mobilizing funds for the project from outside sources, he stated.

India's only state sponsored repertory is focusing on publications too. It is starting a series wherein noted personalities will interact with the audience that will be recorded and published later. In the first series, at least 10 personalities are being invited starting with poet-writer H S Shivaprakash, who is nominated to head Tagore Centre at Berlin. It is not thematic and the guests will speak about their related field, Halemane explained.

3 new crocodile species arrive at Mysore zoo
Mysore, June 7, DHNS:

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust has gifted three new species of crocodiles to Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysore.

http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/06/07/CROCODILE-250.jpg
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/06/07/CROCODILE--1-250.jpg

The crocodiles will be housed in the newly-constructed enclosures exclusively built for the purpose. They are designed in a way that are akin to the natural habitat of individual species, said K B Markandaiah, Executive Director of Mysore zoo.

At present there are five species of crocodiles in Mysore zoo. With the addition of three more species, eight species of crocodiles will be on display at the zoo, which is a rare distinction.

Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), Dwarf Caiman (Paloesuchus palpebrosus) and African Slender Snouted Crocodile (Mecistops cataphractus) are the the newly arrived reptiles.

Nile Crocodile is the second largest crocodile species in the world and is a native of Africa.

Their natural habitat is lakes, rivers, freshwater swamps, brackish water and they can modify their habitat by digging dens to protect themselves from adverse climatic conditions.

The Dwarf Caiman is the world’s smallest crocodile species from northern and central South America. The male crocodiles grow up to 1.6 m (5.2 ft), while the female crocodiles measure typically up to 1.2 m (4 ft). Their habitat is freshwater forested riverine and flooded areas.

African Slender Snouted Crocodile is a medium- sized freshwater crocodile and is a native of freshwater habitats in central and western Africa. They grow to about four metre long. They have a slender snout used for catching prey, hence the name.

The Mysore zoo is one of the very few zoos in India, which house the world’s largest Salt Water Crocodile species and the smallest Dwarf Caiman Crocodile, said the executive director.

TRANSFORMER TROUBLE IN CITY

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3910/imageaspe.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/imageaspe.jpg/)

Picture shows the connecting rods of a transformer in Siddhartha Layout near the Milk Dairy in flames last night. The fire, which was first spotted at 6.30 pm, was not put off even after 11.30 pm when this picture was taken.

Flaming transformers and sparks flying in transformers has become a common sighting throughout the city for the past six months. Since the rains have begun, so have the flaming incidents. Just last month, a transformer near the Crawford Hall was seen flaming.

Star of Mysore has received numerous calls in this regard from Gokulam, Siddhartha Layout, Kuvempunagar and Hebbal. The residents complain that though the electricity linemen respond immediately, they do not fix the problem as the sparks are sighted just a few minutes after they leave.

CITY TO GET KIDWAI UNIT SOON: RAMDAS

Open heart surgery facility at Jayadeva in four months

Mysore, June 9 (DV)- Kidwai Cancer Hospital unit, a long-felt demand here, will start functioning within four months, said Medical Education and District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas.

Addressing a press meet here recently, he said initially there was a plan to start the unit at K.R. Hospital premises. But due to lack of space, it has now been decided to setup the unit at the new building in the premises of P.K. Sanatorium.

The building is in the stage of completion. The matter with regard to purchase of necessary equipments for the hospital and their installation has been discussed at the Director's meeting which has been approved by the Government. The appointment of three doctors for the unit has also been finalised and rest of the staff will be appointed soon, he added.

Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre at K.R. Hospital premises will be converted into a full-fledged cardio-vascular hospital and an open heart surgery unit will function within four months, he stated.

The Chief Minister, at the time of inauguration of the Jayadeva unit, had announced to release the remaining grant of Rs. 27 crore, he said. On a question by the reporters that the grant is yet to be released, Ramdas said due to technical reason, the grant was not released during the last financial year. However, this has been projected in the current year's budget and administrative approval has been accorded.

Vastrad is new Mysore DC
Bangalore, June 9, DHNS: (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/167679/vastrad-mysore-dc.html)

The State government on Thursday transferred Mysore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harsh Gupta and posted him as Additional Secretary and ex-officio Project Director of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan (SSA), Bangalore. Davangere DC P S Vastrad will be the new DC of Mysore.

Gupta’s transfer has come a day after two wild elephants strayed into Mysore, terrorising the citizens of the Palace city. One person lost his life in the incident.

But the reason for the transfer, it is said, is not Wednesday’s incident, but the manner in which he came down heavily on the real estate mafia. He had retrieved considerable extent of government land encroached by private developers. He had also got illegal places of worship demolished, as per the Supreme Court direction. It is an open secret in Mysore that many prominent politicians of all parties are into real estate business. District incharge minister SA Ramdas had no cordial relations with Gupta, who is known for his strict ways, sources said.

Gupta was posted as Mysore DC in May 2010. Before Mysore, he had served as the DC of Shimoga, Bellary and Bidar districts.

He served as Bellary DC for a brief period of 20 days, when the Bellary Reddy brothers had raised a banner of revolt against Chief Minister Yeddyurappa.

During his stint in iron-ore rich Bellary, he had collected a record Rs 20 crore as royalty from mining companies.

He was also credited with upgrading infrastructure in Bidar district as the DC. Sandhya Venugopal Sharma who was the Project Director of SSA has been transferred without posting.

Ducks are quacks to treat sick water in Mysore
Sreekantswamy B, Mysore, June 10, DHNS: (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/167965/ducks-quacks-treat-sick-water.html)

Learning from Tamil Nadu, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is deploying ducks to treat sewage water generated in the city, saving money on electricity bills.

http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/06/10/DUCKS-250.jpg

Hundreds of swimming birds brought from Vellore are wallowing in sewage at one of the three ponds at the sewage treatment plant (STP) on Old Kesare here, in an experiment to break up solids in the sewage to make it easy for the plant to treat the sullage.

As the birds swim through the water, the waste floating atop is churned and breaks into smaller particles and is deposited at the bottom as silt.

Successfully experimented in Tamil Nadu, using ducks in the sewage treatment is being tried for the first time in the State, in Mysore.

As many as 752 ducks, supplied by a Tamil Nadu agency specialising in treating water using water fowl, have been released into one of the three ponds at the plant here, and more are expected to join them in the coming days. Fresh fish and other meat are the dietary requirements of the ducks, and the environmental engineers at the City Corporation have directed to arrange the supply.

Sources told Deccan Herald that the MCC spends close to Rs 12 lakh in the form of electricity bills comprising all the three STPs -- Vidyaranyapuram, Rayankere and Old Kesare.

For the last plant alone, the civic body pays the bill in the range of Rs 1.75 lakh to Rs 2.30 lakh.

It has a capacity of storing 30 MLD of water.

The wings of the fans in the bottom fixed to 24 motors, rotate swiftly, churning the water, and in the process, cleaning it.

The motors are switched on depending on the water received at the STP. From the minimum of six to a maximum of 16 motors are run round-the-clock.

Commissioned in 2002, the STP is the only non-chemical facility to treat water. The ponds are divided into primary and secondary storage. After secondary stage, the treated water is released into a valley nearby, that is used mostly for gardening and agriculture purposes.

I can't understand why the state government transfering Good working DC's. In similar incident they have transfered the good working DC Mr. Poonuraj, his wife Hemalatha and Subodh Yadav ( who was strict against land mafia and also used public for Cleaning drive).

Why the government feel accountable to public. For any official it requires at least 8- 10 months to get set and Gel well with the local issues. At the time they about to perform if they are transfered the things will come to ground zero. If this person would have allowed to work he would have made Mysore a much better city in Karnataka.

Due to recent Elephant attack in Mysore City was one of the reason behind his transfer the district administration has failed to collect the information about those giant elephants entering the urban area

second reason is he has taken a decision of demolishing the footpath encroachments, Government land encroachment & he has also given a report to the government about Dasara celebration without the knowledge of district in-charge minister

Preserving historic buildings
Eswar Singh KR, June 10 DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/167911/preserving-historic-buildings.html)

The central government wants bigger concept for conservation of heritage in Mysore. Heritage department and MCC are preparing a detailed project report for protecting and restoring the public buildings, which lie neglected all these years, writes Eswar Singh KR

The heritage lovers can now rejoice and celebrate. There are good tidings for the heritage core area in city. The Government is giving final touches to constitution of heritage committee in six heritage cities and towns in state - where Mysore occupies top position along with World Heritage site Hampi.

As the work on Rajamarga is underway with some funds from Chief Minister’s grant and Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has just begun the work on upgrading the Town Hall and its premises making it a tourist attraction, there is more to come for the protection and conservation of heritage buildings. The MCC has already constituted a Heritage Cell to coordinate and monitor the projects for heritage sites. The Cell would soon be upgraded to Heritage Committee bringing in more departments like tourism, urban development and others for well-knit coordination to execute various projects.

Says Neela Manjunath, Heritage Commissioner that the department in cooperation with the MCC had submitted a detailed project report on restoration and renovation of the Maharaja Sanskrit Pathashala and the Banumaiah Boys’ High School building which come under core heritage zone under JnNURM.

“However, the central empowered committee of Jn-nurm observed that entire city of Mysore is worth a heritage and asked us to come out with a bigger plan for the conservation of heritage. As our department is small, the job of chalking out a plan is entrusted to the MCC. The plan will be discussed and finalised by the MCC in consultation with the heritage department. It is a good development that the heritage cell is formed and it will be further upgraded,” she told City Herald.

Sources in the MCC said that the MCC has prepared a detailed plan for the development of Devaraja Market, Vani Vilas Market, Mandi market and the Lansdowne building. The proposal is being given a final shape in consultation with TMD consultants, Bangalore. “The preparation of the detailed project report is in final stages. It will be completed in a month or so. The TMD will along with MCC will oversee the estimation, execution and monitoring of the project,” Nisha Naidu of TMD said.

The Devaraja market will be retained as it is while providing a restoration work for the building. While, the V V Market and the Mandi Mohalla market will get a parking facility along with the repair and restoration works.

The inner market area will also be refurbished with the upgradation of stalls and providing it a new look. The restoration work on the Lansdowne building would also be taken up. All these works will sink with the heritage value of the buildings. The MCC may seek funds from both the central and state governments through the assistance of the heritage department. The DPR will be submitted soon seeking special assistance, sources in MCC told this paper.

JnNURM project

Under the tourism component in JnNURM project, the MCC has begun work on the Rs 39.45 crore project to give a facelift to the Town Hall and its grounds and the Roads surrounding the Amba Vilas Palace. It envisages for widening of the road between Hardinge circle and K R Circle enroute Gun House and Rachaiah circle, a sarot (tonga) stand near Palace and 20 sarot stands across city and tourist information centres at a cost of Rs 16.73 crore.

The package II and III involves opening of 20 sarot stands across various places in city, basement parking area in the Town Hall premise spending Rs 17.66 crore. While, Rangacharlu Memorial Hall will be developed with air condition facilities at a cost of Rs 2.83 crore. The projects are expected to be completed before May-June 2012, source added.

Where are the works happening? :gaah: This reporter has got confused with Raja marga which is being funded by CM's 100 grants and not JNNURM.The fact is that MCC is cash strapped and JNNURM funds have not flown into the city for a while. Thanks to stupid MCC commissioner and district in charge who are at the helm of affairs.

MYSORE: Under the guise of road-widening, many footpaths in Mysore have been reduced to next to nothing.

“What is left is very often encroached by vendors, commercial establishments for customer parking and residents for their private gardens,” said the Mysore Grahakara Parishat.

Now, another type of ‘official' encroachment of footpaths is further reducing their usefulness — the erection of large cement signboards for circles and roads, according to B Vaikunth Shenoy of MGP.

“There are two examples [of this], one at the intersection of Ramavilas Road and Narayan Shastri Road, and one at the intersection of Dewan's Road and Vinoba Road. These signboards are blocking the already narrow footpaths,” he said in a press release.

Mr. Shenoy suggested that the problem could easily be solved by removing the concrete structures (which soon become unsightly because of all the advertisements stuck on them) and hanging metal signboards from steel cables strung diagonally across circles.

Such an arrangement was common in many western countries, he said, and pointed out the cables could also be used to hang traffic lights.
