engineer.akash February 4th, 2012, 06:29 PM MANDAKALLI AIRPORT UPGRADATION WORK: MINISTER TO APPRISE CM ON FEB. 9
Mysore, Feb. 4- District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas has announced that he would meet the Chief Minister on Feb. 9 to apprise him on the pending works for the upgradation of Mandakalli Airport here.
He was addressing a meeting of top officials of District Administration at the Deputy Commissioner's office here today.
Pending works: Elaborating on the pending works for the upgradation of the airport, Ramdas said "A total of 145 acres of land has to be acquired and handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The present runway has to be extended to facilitate the flight of bigger aircraft. The National Highway 212 has to be re-routed for the expansion work and a proposal will be placed before the Government for its inclusion in the allocation of funds during the coming budget."
Bottlenecks:Referring to the bottlenecks and hindrances for the expansion work, Ramdas said that the mobile tower at Mandakalli and the Doordarshan tower atop Chamundi Hill may pose hindrance for the operation of flights and asked Mysore SP to look into the matter after discussion with Doordarshan officials. He also instructed the City Corporation officials to solve the menace of stray dogs and birds near the airport possibly initiated by the accumulation of dry garbage nearby.
He instructed the KSRTC officials to work on establishing a bus stop near the airport.
The officials of the Forest Department were instructed by Ramdas to get the trees pruned on either side of the runway and on the approach route. They were also asked to end the menace of stray pigs.
Fuel tax: Referring to the tax reduction sought on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by the Airline operators, Ramdas assured that he would raise the issue during his meeting with the CM on Feb. 9. As Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Spicejet had envinced keen interest to operate their flights to city, Ramdas reassured that a sincere effort would be made to materialise the proposals.
Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, Police Superintendent R. Dilip, City Police Commissioner K.L. Sudhir, ZP CEO G. Satyavathi, officials of various Departments and those of AAI were present.
Ramdas later held a meeting with officials of CADA regarding release of water to Kabini right bank. He also assured a group of employees of South India Paper Mills and AT&S India that he would initiate talks between the management and labour department to solve their problems.

engineer.akash February 5th, 2012, 11:12 AM Hope brightens for airport expansion
MYSORE: The expansion of the Mysore Airport and its commercial operation got wings on Saturday.
Three months after the Kingfisher Airlines suspended its winter schedule leading to suspension of the commercial operations at the facility, district minister S A Ramdas held a meeting with the officials and other stakeholders. They have decided to approach chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda on February 9.
He will ask the CM to focus on acquisition of additional land for the phase-II project and seek his intervention to cut down tax on the aviation turbine fuel (ATF), a demand the air operators are seeking to start operations from Mysore.
It now looks like the airport's prospects hinges on its expansion with the operators seeking extension of runway to start operations and also to use the facility for parking of flights during night. The phase-II will allow wider bodied aircraft, including Boeing and Airbus to operate out of Mysore.
At present, smaller aircrafts, including ATR-72 flights can operate. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought 311 acres additionally for the expansion project. The crux of the problem is realignment of part of NH 212 connecting Mysore to Nanjangud.
The proposed runway cuts across the NH which is proposed to be upgraded into four lane expressway to ease traffic on the busy stretch. Though it was proposed in 2008 that the part of the NH has to be realigned to allow for the extension of the runway, there is no word on the acquisition of land to lay the NH. However, Ramdas said he will seek the CM to extend financial assistance to the airport in the budget.
"I'll request him to cut the tax on ATF," he told reporters. He said steps will be taken to realign the NH and also to acquire the additional land required for phase-II of the airport.During the meeting, the AAI official C Manjunath, who is in-charge of Mysore airport, said six operators are interested to connect to Mysore and are seeking extension of the runway. There is pressure at Bengaluru International Airport and they are looking at Mysore for night operations. This can be done only if the runway is extended, said.
The Confederation of Indian Industry's Biswajit Misra asked the minister to cut down tax on the ATF, which, he said, will help make Mysore an attractive destination for the operators. Presently, it is highest in South Indian states. If it is cut to 15 per cent from 32 per cent at least for a year, it will help boost the operations to Mysore. Pointing out that Mysore is a tourist hub, he said some 50 major industries based in and around Mysore require air connectivity.

s.yogendra February 6th, 2012, 12:25 PM FOUNDATION STONE FOR AUTO NAGAR ON MARCH 3: RAMDAS
Mysore, Feb. 6 - District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas declared here that the foundation stone for Auto Nagar in city will be laid on Mar.3.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly-built Truck Terminal on the outer Ring Road near RMC here recently, Ramdas said the Auto Nagar meant for repairing vehicles will be established at three places including Devanur layout.
The Auto Nagar will feature repair of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, etc., and sale of spare parts. There were nearly 871 mechanic shops across the city, the owners of which have agreed to shift to Auto Nagar once the work on the project is completed.
Continuing, he said the shifting will considerably reduce air and noise pollution besides easing traffic movement.
Pointing out that Karnataka is second in the number of AIDS affected persons, Ramdas said Truck drivers and cleaners for-med a major part of this number. As such, the drivers and clearners should be more cautious, he remarked.

engineer.akash February 6th, 2012, 12:43 PM Infosys Limited Mysore building secures LEED Platinum certification
Infosys Limited has secured LEED India Platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council for its Software Development Block 5 in Mysore, Karnataka, India.
The building imbibes several eco-friendly elements. Daylight is harvested in 90% of the office area which in turn reaps energy cost cuts. Light shelves have been installed along all its windows to allow maximum natural light penetration deep in the building. The lighting design leads to 35% more efficiency compared to ASHRAE specifications. The interior of the facility also features contrasting brightness with the use of light-toned surfaces and ceilings to reduce strain of the staff.
The building has been equipped with various other energy-efficient systems such as insulated walls and roof, spectrally selective double glazed shaded windows, high-performance equipment and advanced automation. Use of these measures have led in achieving 40% energy savings over ASHRAE norms. The entire energy requirement of the facility is met with green power.
Installation of efficient plumbing fixtures and reclaimed water to meet irrigation needs adds to the sustainability by cutting down 58% in total water usage. Further, 10% of the overall materials such as aluminum, glass and steel were reclaimed. Other green features include diversion of construction debris from reaching landfills, and procuring 41% of materials via regional sources.

engineer.akash February 6th, 2012, 07:10 PM Exclusive fish restaurants to be opened in Mysore
Manish, Mysore, Feb 6, 2012, DHNS:
Travellers zipping on the Mysore-Bangalore state highway will be soon able to crunch on tasty freshwater and sea fish at affordable rates, thanks to an initiative of the Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC).
After tasting success with the opening of Mathsyadarshini Restaurant at Cubbon Park in Bangalore, KFDC is opening two more such fish outlets in Mysore - one on the outskirts of city at Siddalingapura and the other at Gokulam.
During the first phase of the project, KFDC is spending Rs 30 lakh for the fish outlet at Siddalingapura and Rs 20 lakh for the centre at Gokulam. Both are set to be opened by the end of February.
Initially, the Siddalingapura centre would have only a kiosk to cater to customers, while the Gokulam centre would be opened at an existing building.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, KFDC managing director V K Shetty said that there is further scope for setting-up an aquarium centre at Siddalingapura as it is spread on an area of half-an-acre in the second phase of the project. As there are five ponds in the area, it would be used to rear fish, which would be later sold to customers.
Even though the Mysore-Bangalore road is dotted with a large number of dhabas and a couple of restaurants dishing out sea fare, Shetty believes that fish would be available at a cheaper rate in their outlet. “We are not just focussing on making profits. The idea is to provide fish, which is a protein rich food and healthy for all,” he added.

engineer.akash February 6th, 2012, 08:28 PM Attractive subsidies to start pisciculture in Mysore
M Ravi, Mysore, Feb 6, 2012, DHNS:
At a time when farmers are turning to animal husbandry and apiculture (maintenance of honey bee colonies) to improve profits, fisheries department is taking measures to encourage pisciculture (rearing fish under controlled conditions) by offering attractive subsidies to farmers.
Under the financial assistance provided by the government under various schemes, farmers can avail assistance from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 for rearing fish on one acre. Also, the fisheries department is helping farmers in availing bank loans.
According to department officials, an approximate of Rs 54,000 is needed to start pisciculture on an area of one acre. If 2,500 fishes are reared, then farmers can earn profits up to Rs 26,000, they said.
Fisheries department assistant director Bhavani observed that fisheries was a profitable venture.
However, due to lack of awareness among the public, the maximum benefit is yet to be taken from pisculture. Apart from financial assistance, the fisheries department offers 50 per cent discount on purchase of select fishes. The department is already conducting awareness programmes at the grama panchayat level to expand the reach of pisciculture.
Fish purchase centre
Farmers can purchase fry (young fish) at Nugu Fish Fry Centre at Kabini Industrial Area in H D Kote taluk, Bidarahalli Production Centre, Alanahalli Fish Seed Farm, Kapila Fish Seed Farm and Fish Fry Production Centre at Karimuddanahalli. Varieties of fish include Katla, Rohu, Mrugal, Belligende and Hullugende.
Advise
Fisheries department says that before undertaking pisciculture it is necessary to test the soil. If the soil is loose, then the water would drain away. However, land with a mixture of clay and sand is best suited for pisciculture.
Land near irrigated areas, paddy fields, non-agricultural lands are also suitable. It is advisable to take assistance of local fisheries department staff, before taking up pisciculture.

s.yogendra February 7th, 2012, 03:34 AM Melkote temple to get a facelift
The Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple at Melkote, which was languished in neglect, is poised to see better days as the State Government has sanctioned Rs. 1.36 crore towards its renovation and conservation.
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00916/06bgMYRKKHI-W041_GC_916071e.jpg
This is the first intervention of this scale planned for the monument atop a lofty hillock. The restoration work will be taken up by the State Archaeology Department.
R. Gopal, Director of the State Department of Archaeology and Museums, told The Hindu that the existing structure was crumbling in parts.
Hence, the bricks used in the temple construction would be replaced, as also the wooden columns and beams that support the structure.
The external façade, including the stucco work, would be retained. The temple will be re-plastered using lime and mortar, which were the original materials used in its construction.
Mr. Gopal said funds had been sanctioned by the Government, and the work may be taken up in the new financial year.
“It is the first time that the temple is getting a comprehensive treatment, which will not only restore the ancient monument to its pristine glory but also extend its lifespan,” said Mr. Gopal.
Also, the steps leading to the monument will be levelled. At present, they are uneven at places and extremely steep, which makes it difficult for elderly persons to reach the spot.
The project also entails installing steel railings on both sides of the steps all the way up to the temple.
The temple overlooks a large ‘Kalyani', and the authorities have spent over Rs. 50 lakh in 2009 sprucing up the pillars and the mantapa while Rs. 5 lakh was spent on the ‘gopuras' that adorn the premises, according to Mr. Gopal.
The temple town — a bastion of the Vaishnava sect and strewn with protected monuments and heritage structures — was patronised by successive rulers of Karnataka.
There are records that indicate that the temple was already in existence when the saint and reformer Sri Ramanujacharya — who lived during the 11th and the 12th centuries — stayed at Melkote for nearly 12 years.
So, the Yoga Narasimhaswamy temple is at least 1,000 years old if not more. The religious belief is that the temple was consecrated by Prahalada.
In more recent times, Raja Wadiyar who ascended the throne in 1610, is credited with patronising the temples by gifting villages and improving the Kalyani, while his successors made liberal donations.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article2867723.ece

JhonJ February 7th, 2012, 06:44 AM Mysore varsity to trek adventurous path!
Adventure sports to be introduced for degree students; UGC funding under 11th plan
Here is a piece of good news for adventure buffs among students at the University of Mysore.
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2012/02/06/kodagy-mysore-adventure-pat.jpg
For the first time in the history of its inception, the varsity is introducing adventure sports to cater to the interest of students from the next academic year. Various activities planned will be included in extra-curricular activities.
Sources told Deccan Herald adventure sports is being introduced for degree students complying with the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC has sponsored Rs 50 lakh to take up the activity under Eleventh Five Year Plan.
Accordingly, tenders have been invited to create the facilities — a majority being purchase of equipment. The activities planned under three wings include parasailing, terrestrial and water sports. Buoyant — a separate make-shift platform to facilitate parasailing will be created. Tents, pegging device for trekking and power boat will also be purchased among several other articles marked to complete the set up. If all goes well, Kukkarahalli lake will be the platform for water related sports with power boat being the main attraction. Wall climbing is also included.
To make it convenient, especially to encourage all those students interested to take part in the activities, the adventure sports will be organised during vacation — either mid-term or summer or any other suitable schedule. A nominal fee will also be charged towards maintenance cost.
As adventure sports is also new for the varsity, the department of physical education which will be drawing out programmes, has decided to hire an experienced person in the field to conduct the activities without any hassles.
Hope for more
It’s just a beginning and the implementation of the project may augur well to add more under the banner of adventure sports, the source said.
Till now, the only time for adventure sports in Mysore was during Dasara, with the organisers holding parasailing, jet-skiing, banana ride, hot air balloon riding among other events to name a few.

rocky23 February 7th, 2012, 07:02 AM Hope brightens for airport expansion
Pointing out that Mysore is a tourist hub, he said some 50 major industries based in and around Mysore require air connectivity.
rocky23 February 7th, 2012, 07:04 AM Heritage tag for royal city’s flora
MYSORE: What started as a private initiative to map some of the old trees in Mysore and trace its evolution has now given the city many rich heritage properties.
In June 2008, the committee for protection of heritage trees declared red silk cotton tree in Curzon Park abutting the Mysore Palace as a 'heritage tree'. Now, it's one of 10 trees that the state government identified as heritage trees in Karnataka.
It has history attached to it. The 100-year-old tree traces its roots to the visit to Lord Curzon, viceroy and governor-general of India, to Mysore State in 1900. "The sapling was planted by Curzon," said M Ramalingam, convener of the committee, that has accorded nine trees in Mysore with heritage status.
"The plant is usually found in Western Ghats. Its scientific name is 'Bombax Ceiba' and known as 'Kempu Boorugada Mara' given its five-petal red flowers during the spring season," said botanist Ramalingam.
Lord Curzon visited Mysore on November 30, 1900, and toured the erstwhile Mysore State for 10 days. He visited Srirangapatna, Kakanakote, Bangalore and KGF. The park abutting Mysore Palace was initially a moat, which was turfed out and a garden laid over it when the palace was under construction in early 1900s.
Later, the park was named after Lord Curzon. Declaration of heritage trees in Karnataka was done because of the committee, which started to identify age-old trees in the city, given that they form a part of city's tangible heritage.
"Trees are living examples of history. The only thing is that they can't explain it!" Ramalingam explained. When the groundwork started in early 2008, the committee comprising experts, made a representation to the Western Ghats Taskforce asking it to get heritage tag for trees that are a century old. This is because, Ramalingam says, they form part of the city's culture and help in tracking past vegetation of the region. "They are also geographical evidence," he said, pointing out that red silk cotton tree is originally from Africa.
"These form fertile seed resources too." The peepal tree at Manasa Gangotri campus, which the government identified as heritage, is 160 years old. It was worshipped by members of Mysore royal family. It was in the vicinity of Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, palace constructed for Jayalakshmi, sister of Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.
Ramalingam said the tree had religious significance during the maharaja's era. Incidentally, it is the second tree that the committee has tagged 'heritage'.
The first tree it named is a banyan tree at Chikkahalli. Located off Mysore-Tirumakudlu Narsipur Road, this one is 260 years old and is being guarded by villagers religiously.

s.yogendra February 8th, 2012, 06:08 AM Lorry owners want another terminal in Mysore
The inauguration of the D. Devaraja Urs Truck Terminal on the Mysore-Nanjangud road here a few days ago has been well received by lorry owners, drivers and cleaners.
Now, the Mysore district Lorry Owners' Association has urged the State Government to establish another terminal at Hebbal here.
President of the association B. Kodandaram told The Hindu on Tuesday that a formal request had been made in this regard.
“We want the terminal at Hebbal on a 40-acre plot,” he said.
The inauguration of the Devaraja Urs terminal was the result of their efforts for the last 30 years, he added.
Avoid congestion
Mr. Kodandaram pointed out that with the opening of the new terminal, many trucks to Mysore need not enter the city. This would help to avoid traffic congestion.
It would also come in handy for drivers and cleaners. While they earlier had to carry stoves and rations to cook along their route, they could now make use of the canteen facilities, toilets, bathrooms and garages.
Accidents because of lack of food and sleep would be a thing of the past, he said.

s.yogendra February 8th, 2012, 06:08 AM Goods shed lorry owners stage protest
Members of the railway goods shed lorry owners' association staged a dharna here on Tuesday demanding that they be allowed to move freely inside the city.
Restrictions imposed by the police three months ago on the movement of lorries that transported items from the railway goods shed here to the Food Corporation of India godowns and ration depots across the district had affected over 300 lorry owners, Abdul Khader, secretary of the association said.
The members, who protested outside the Deputy Commissioner's office, also demanded separate parking slots.
‘Doesn't help us'
The newly inaugurated D. Devaraja Urs Truck Terminal was welcome, but it would not help the lorries who lifted stock from the railway goods shed.
They had to operate within the city and in the absence of proper parking, they parked their vehicles on the roadside, they said.
On an average, three wagons of foodgrains, sugar, fertilizer and other goods arrived in the city every day, Mr. Khader said.
The protesters submitted a memorandum to the district administration and met the Mysore Urban Development Authority Commissioner seeking land for construction of parking area.
They want curbs on movement inside the city lifted and separate parking lots

s.yogendra February 8th, 2012, 04:55 PM Sunny side up! Solar lamps to light up KSOU
Varsity begins work on installing solar lamps; sodium lamps replaced by new technology
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2012/02/07/kodagu-solar-lamp.jpg
At a time when power crisis in the state is far from ending, solar energy has emerged as one of the alternate sources of energy with increasing number of takers.
Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), one of the premier institutes, joins the list of alternate energy users deciding to light up its campus with solar lamps. The project is expected to cost Rs 19 lakh.
Vice-chancellor of the varsity K S Rangappa told Deccan Herald the project conceived six months ago was becoming a reality with works on fixing solar lamps underway. With this, the varsity aims at saving electricity both in terms of consumption and also expenditure in the form of bill.
Said assistant executive engineer at the varsity N Anil Kumar: “A total of 58 lamps will be installed in the campus spread over sprawling 15 acres of land. It will cover the area including old building and also some of the new structures. Each lamps of 20 watt can tap 1.2 kv energy, suffice to keep the area in light for 12 hours from dusk to dawn — 6 pm to 6 am (depending on the sunlight). In all, solar lamps will replace 25 sodium lamps installed in the existing set up.
Before going ahead with the project, the authorities had installed two lamps on trial basis two months ago. Earlier the lamps were of 12 watt power. However, the lux (a measure of amount of light produced) wasn’t satisfactory. So, it was decided to go for 20 watt. The works on installing the poles with solar panel and lamps atop have begun.
According to Anil Kumar 50 per cent of the total amount spent on electricity bill could be saved in the new system. Needless to say latest technology is being used to make the facility durable. Another benefit is — as is the rule — the Central government will give subsidy in the range of five to 10 per cent on the total cost. The work is expected to be completed in a day or two.
If that’s the development happening outdoors, various departments and offices in the varsity will also undergo change in the coming days indoors. Tubelights and bulbs will be replaced by CFL.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/225359/sunny-side-up-solar-lamps.html
s.yogendra February 8th, 2012, 06:22 PM NIGERIAN BATS FOR A FOOTBALL CLUB IN CITY
Inspired by the beauty and culture of Mysore in particular and the country in general, Sadiq Saleh Navodaki, a member of a Nigerian royal family recently announced that a Football Club would be set up in city to encourage the game of football which happens to be a very popular sport in his country.
This was disclosed by him at the Nanjumalige residence of his close friend Ikram Siddiqi while he was on his way to Hyderabad after visiting Mysore Palace and Bandipur Forest.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, he said that he was very happy to be in Mysore and also lauded the broadmindedness of Mysoreans and stated that he had visited Delhi, Goa, Jaipur, Bangalore, Pune and other places. But, Mysore had left him spellbound so also the Bandipur Forest.
Stating that tourism in Mysore needs to be improved along with the living conditions of the citizens, he added that women and children also needed to be developed. He also said that he would rope in investors from his country and launch developmental projects in the city.
Declaring that football was a popular sport in Nigeria, Sadiq Saleh said that he planned to bring football players from Nigeria to Mysore and promote a club in the name of his friend Ikram Siddiqi’s father.
Besides working as a Governor of Plateau province in Nigeria, he is a big business-man.
The Nigerian royal family kin said that he was following the footsteps of his father who had contributed to the development of Nigeria.
He also promised all cooperation for any developmental activity to be launched in the city. http://www.starofmysore.com
s.yogendra February 8th, 2012, 06:23 PM Residency group set to expand footprint in Puducherry, Mysore
The Residency group of hotels is all set to strengthen its presence in the South by expanding its chain. Besides the two hotels that The Residency, promoted by the Appaswamy group now operates in Chennai and one each at Coimbatore, Bangalore and Karur, plans are afoot to establish hotels in Puducherry, Madurai, Mysore and Chennai.
The proposed project at Chennai is expected to come up along the IT highway. Though this would not be immediate, the launch of this project would make it the group's third hotel in Chennai. The group already operates two hotels at T Nagar - The Residency, Chennai and its second property – a four-star category hotel – The Residency Towers.
The Managing Director of the Group, Mr Ravi Appaswamy, told Business Line that the work on the Puducherry project was on, while land had been procured for establishing a hotel each in Madurai, Mysore and Chennai. While work on the group's venture at Madurai and Mysore would commence before the close of the year, the Chennai project, which is expected to come up in a 4.5 acre ground on the IT highway would not be immediate, he said.
At Madurai, the hotel is expected to come up closer to the airport on a seven-acre ground. “We have given the work to a Singapore architect. The plan is on the drawing board stage. We intend to have a convention centre as well and take the city to the next level. The Mysore project would have 100 rooms and in downtown area. We will target tour groups and business people as there is a lot happening in terms of IT in Mysore.”
Allocation
The budget allocation towards the Mysore and Madurai projects have been estimated at around Rs 125-150 crore. “It will be from our internal accruals,” he said, adding “it will take about three years to operationalise these hotels. We expect to commence the work before the end of this year.”
Mr Appasamy was in the city to oversee the renovation of the Coimbatore project. Asked if he was looking to foray in to Hyderabad and Bangalore, he said, “We are not looking at establishing our chain in Hyderabad for now because of the Telangana issue; as for Bangalore, we are looking at a right location.”
(The Bangalore property – The Richmond Hotel – is managed by SAS Hotels).
Reverting to the Coimbatore project, he said, “We are preparing to offer our customers a new experience, be it dining or staying. Today, the hospitality industry here has matured, grown four-fold; we are not looking at establishing a second project here.”
Asked if he sought to refurbish the interiors because of the competition following entry of a number of business class hotels here, he said, “The normal turnaround time for renovation in the hotel industry ranges between 8 and 10 years; we have taken up renovation of gadgets such as the air-conditioning plant, lift and other engineering equipments in the first phase. This would result in energy saving and thereby cost, as also ensure our commitment to the environment.”
The group has installed a windmill, which caters to the energy requirement of its five hotels, he said.
Renovation of the rooms was in progress and every three months, the refurbished rooms would be rolled out, he said. “We invest on maintaining the room, not just creating the facility and stopping there. Every three months, we refurbish the upholstery, polish and make the required changes. Now, we have taken up 100 per cent replacement on an estimated outlay of Rs 25-30 crore.”
Differential tariff
The group has introduced differential tariff such as corporate tariff, best available rate and flexible pricing. “This dynamic pricing is basically to handle the supply-demand gap and we also offer 24-hour check-out facility unlike most others that go by the 12 o'clock check-in rate,” he said, adding “like the airline industry, the hospitality sector is also going through a revenue management situation.”
Pricing of various offerings such as availing cab service, pick-up and drop, complimentary breakfast etc, which remained fixed in the past was made more flexible now, he added. “The customer can choose the services that he/she wishes to avail from the bouquet of offerings and pay only for the services availed.”
To a query on the challenge that the hospitality sector faced at this juncture, Mr Appaswamy said, “Attrition at the threshold level is still an issue.” http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/marketing/article2869377.ece?homepage=true&ref=wl_home

s.yogendra February 9th, 2012, 12:22 PM Science PG courses by KSOU
Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa said KSOU, which is taking education to the door steps of people through distance mode, will start MSc in Physics and Chemistry on its Vigyan Bhavan campus. He said Vigyan Bhavan will be constructed at the cost of `22 crore.
“When Hayward University can start science courses online, why can’t KSOU offer science courses to those who cannot pursue studies in conventional universities,” he said.
The varsity will extend distance education through online and distance mode with an objective to emphasise basic science courses, he added. Observing that nothing can be achieved without basic science, he said there is no Nobel laureate with basic science knowledge.
Rangappa said that India with a good number of bureaucrats still needs to produce good faculty, scientists, engineers, economists and doctors.
He said there is no bureaucratic interference in the field of higher education in other countries. However, the Vision Group of Science and Technology spends a lot of money and has focused on inter disciplinary subjects. He called upon teachers to ask students to tap resources and programmes that were launched by both the state and Union governments for encouraging students in basic science course.
He said the country with a lot of human resource needs good faculty who can inspire and groom young scientists.

s.yogendra February 10th, 2012, 03:06 PM MUDA FOR A SEPARATE AUCTION HALL
Mysore, Feb. 10- In a bid to curtail additional expenditure and dependency on Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry for holding of auction of its sites at various localities in the city, the Mysore Urban Develpopment Authority (MUDA) has plans to build a separate auction hall in its premises.
All these days MUDA required spending a large sum to provide necessary furniture at the Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry for the process of auctioning of its sites (all of which were being taken for hire).
Plans for construction of the hall at its own premises would result in the end of MUDA's dependence on Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry as the auction process may get affected if the Choultry was occupied by others on the day of the auction.
Besides, planning construction of the auction hall, MUDA also plans to give space at the first or second floor for Vijaya Bank branch for the convenience of visitors.
Brake on middlemen
Under instructions from MUDA Chairman L. Nagendra, the officials of MUDA have decided to keep agents who approach customers and extort money from them at bay.
Parking
Cars of MUDA Commissioner, Secretary, Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineer, Special Land Acquisition Officer, members of Town Planning, Chief Accounts officer and other officers which would be parked in front of MUDA premises will now be parked behind the premises.
Scrutiny
MUDA has authorised eight officials to expedite the process of scrutiny of applications for sites at R.T. Nagar, Lalithadri Nagar and Chamalapura extensions which is taking place in the 2nd floor of the building.
Beneficiaries of HUDCO houses have urged for extension of time for payment of their dues as only 120 of the 1,803 beneficiaries who had been given seven months time had paid their dues which had yielded a revenue of Rs. 9 crore to MUDA.
If the remaining 600 beneficiaries are given another opportunity, an amount of Rs. 4 crore will come to MUDA besides giving poor beneficiaries another chance to get their dream homes and the due date for payment of dues has come to an end on Jan. 30, 2012. http://www.starofmysore.com

s.yogendra February 10th, 2012, 09:09 PM Prasaranga to be just shop away
Mysoreans’ love for books, especially for the best of the literary works is immense. It’s evident with books being dedicated every other day to cater to the exclusive class for whom ‘poring over a book has become a routine like’.
Buoyed by the undying love of connoisseurs, the University of Mysore has decided to enter the market to cater to book lovers. If all goes according to the plan, a shop at Ramaswamy Circle will be a reality this year. It’s a dream project of vice-chancellor V G Talawar a library science expert. The shop will be a sales outlet for Prasaranga, the publication wing of the varsity. Till now an exhibition hall, with a sales outlet attached to it, was the only place to buy Prasaranga’s publications. It’s for the first time, it is finding a permanent place outside the campus.
The space available at the quarters accommodating teaching faculty of the varsity near Ramaswamy Circle has been identified for the shop. Tenders have been invited in this regard.
The location will be ideal as already two book stores — both private publications — are situated near the circle. As it’s a government set up, only books published by Prasaranga and also Kuvempu Institute for Kannada Studies (KIKS) will be made available here. Prasaranga alone has to its credit, bringing out 1,000 works. However, it’s known for extension lecture series with increasing demand for 300 such works.
Some of the prominent works brought out by Prasaranga and still being reprinted include dictionaries (English to Kannada available in four volumes and also in condensed form), ‘Bharateeya Kavya Mimaamse’ by Ti Nam Sri, ‘Epigraphia Karnatica’ of which 15th and 24th volume was dedicated recently.
Till now apart from the exhibition hall on its premises, Prasaranga was largely dependent on major exhibitions across the state. There were nearly eight exhibitions in a year including that of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, making the lone publication arm of the varsity reach people.
With the new outlet, it’s expected to see further growth with the annual sales during 2012-13 already touching Rs 50 lakh, a rare feat again.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/226200/prasaranga-just-shop-away.html
engineer.akash February 12th, 2012, 06:46 AM Decision to collect property tax from revenue layouts comes in for flak
Residents refuse to pay tax on the grounds that they have been denied basic amenities
The decision of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to widen its tax base by bringing revenue layouts under the property tax net has been opposed by residents' organisations.
The MCC has set a target of collecting Rs. 71 crore in property tax in the current financial year, including tax to be collected from 12,000 additional properties in revenue layouts.
However, the Nimishamba Citizens' Welfare Committee has refused to pay the corporation property tax, as the residents claim they have been denied amenities for the last 30 years.
‘Unkept promises'
There were approximately 40 revenue layouts in the city, they said. “Though successive governments promised to legalise the layouts and bring them under the corporation to provide basic amenities, nothing had been done.” Office-bearers of the committee said MCC authorities were conducting surveys of the properties. Residents had been issued notice for tax ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2 lakh for property built on 30x40 ft plot. This calculation was “unscientific”, they charged. Residents were willing to pay the amount if the corporation regularised the revenue layouts and issued them the khatha in lieu of property tax paid, they added.
The committee urged residents of other revenue layouts here to oppose the MCC's decision.
The members called for clarification from the authorities concerned, including Minister in charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas.
Target
The MCC has been on an overdrive since February to meet its target, which includes arrears of the last financial year. So far, it has collected over Rs. 55 crore. There are 1.6 lakh registered properties in MCC limits whose owners are obliged to pay property tax. There are 28 officially recognised revenue layouts, out of its purview. However, MCC authorities argue that the revenue layouts too are being served by the corporation for which they are bound to pay tax.
The cash-strapped MCC is highly dependent on property tax for mobilising resources.

‘We'll pay tax if corporation regularises revenue layouts'
MCC is very unprofessional
engineer.akash February 12th, 2012, 06:58 AM Promoting cycling in a big way (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article2885068.ece)
Hi-tech bicycles, secure bike parking zones and dedicated cycle lanes — Mysore may soon become a cycling-friendly city.
Mysore is one of nine Indian cities selected by the Centre for a pilot project to develop infrastructure for cycling and promote eco-friendly, non-motorised transport aimed at minimising carbon emissions.
Infrastructure
The city is expected to get around 1,000 bicycles, besides infrastructure such as cycle stands, cycling lanes, and signage.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar said the corporation had submitted its plan under the project to the transport wing of the Union Ministry of Urban Development. “We are awaiting approval and funding from the Ministry.”
The commissioner said the corporation had built a 4-km-long cycle track on Lalitha Mahal Road, and was identifying areas where more dedicated bike lanes could be built.
‘Cycle tourism'
The city was chosen for the project as the use of bicycles could be promoted among tourists. “Cycle tourism is our main agenda,” the commissioner said.
“We are also thinking of generating interest about non-motorised transport among people here, under the clean city concept,” he said.
Some private players were reportedly in talks with the University of Mysore to promote cycling culture on the campus. “If students, at least on campus, use bicycles instead of motorcycles, it can make a difference. Infosys has kept bicycles for commuting inside its campus in Mysore,” he said.
On the wane?
The number of bicycles the city gets under the project would later depend on usage, Mr. Raykar said. “People must get used to the cycling culture, which is on the wane.” Attempts have been made to popularise cycling, but the number of automobiles is going up. Students too have stopped using bicycles to go to school.
Although the city has many bicycle showrooms, the cycle rental shops have disappeared. “People have no time for cycling. How can bicycle rental shops survive when the road space has been occupied by automobiles?” asks a local resident, who was cycling to work.

engineer.akash February 13th, 2012, 04:28 PM Work on synthetic track yet to begin (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Work-on-synthetic-track-yet-to-begin/articleshow/11866239.cms)
MYSORE: District in-charge and medical education minister S A Ramdas, said the foundation stone for the synthetic track at Chamundivihar Stadium will be laid on November 1.
During the state-level Dasara sports meet in October, Ramdas has promised the participants that work on the synthetic track at Chamundivihar stadium will commence from November 1. However, even after three months, the work is yet to commence.
It has become a habit for the chief guests, especially ministers, to make false promises. Most of the ministers like former district in-charge minister Shobha Karandlaje, sports minister Goolihatti D Shekar and now Ramdas, during their speeches, used to assure the athletes that the synthetic track would be laid before the next state-level Dasara athletic meet.
But the girls of the sports hostel are fed up with the attitude of these ministers and authorities. This is the only senior women's sports hostel in Karnataka but it lacks basic facilities for its sportspersons.
On Friday, these girls came out and protested against inadequate facilities and demanded sports-kits and other basic facilities including quality food.
Bharathi, assistant commissioner and Appachu Ranjan, deputy director, department of youth services, after an hour-long discussion assured the sportspersons that they would be provided with sports-kits on February 17 and another sports-kit under the zilla panchayat by the end of February.

s.yogendra February 13th, 2012, 05:49 PM Mysore Central Jail prisoners double up as cooks
Soon the people of Mysore can have bread, buns, patties and biscuits made in jail. A bakery unit is all set to start in Mysore Central Prison in a few weeks from now, where prisoners will bake goodies which will be sold in an outlet that will come up in front of the premises. The Prison Department has given its nod to the project following a proposal by the local prison. The jail is purchasing ovens and other equipment needed to open a bakery unit.
Bangalore-based Aarvee Industries is providing technical assistance to start the bakery, apart from training inmates on baking. To start the bakery, the Prison Department has released Rs 3 lakh and the jail has asked Aarvee Enterprises to supply a kneading machine, bread slicer, trays, etc. Initially, 800 pounds of bread, 500 buns, 300 puffs and 20 kg biscuits will be baked daily. Inmates who have interest in baking will be selected to work in two shifts daily - 7.30 am to 12.30 noon and 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
They will receive Rs 50 per shift. Chief Superintendent of Mysore Central Prison, P N Jayasimha said that the inmates are involved in various activities like weaving bed sheets and carpets. Now they are stepping into a new venture.
“We will make this project a success by making good products with the Mysore Jail brand name.”
Having a bakery in the jail will help the government avoid expenses incurred in purchasing bread for inmates daily. It will bring revenue to the exchequer as the items will also be sold outside.http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mysore-central-jail-prisoners-double-up-as-cooks/229829-60-115.html

pnvijoo February 18th, 2012, 01:08 PM NEW GARDEN FOR MYSORE PALACE
Rs. 43 lakh for four acres landscaping
The beauty of the world-famous Amba Vilas Palace is to be further enhanced with a garden on four acres of land, work on which has already commenced.
The total cost of the garden is Rs. 43 lakh. Tenders were called for laying the garden an year ago when Harsha Gupta was the DC. However, the work was stalled in view of Dasara.
The tender has been awarded to Uthaiah Mangalaraman Company and it has been asked to complete the work in the next three months, said Palace Board Deputy Director T.S. Subrahmanya.
As part of the project, the two fountains on either side of the Palace front region, that are more than six decades old, will be repaired and made to function on a daily basis.
Retaining walls of stones will be constructed along the borders of the garden to prevent flowing away of soil during rains.
The garden measuring 16,400 square metres will have lawns of a variety of grass, more than 50,000 varieties of plants, shrubs and vines of tropical regions.
The soil will be mixed with 25 per cent of chemical fertilisers, 50 per cent farmyard manure and horse dung. The entire garden will be barricaded with granite slabs and small pools of 10ftx10ft will be created as part of the landscaping, with a walkway.
During the tenure of former DC Harsha Gupta, the authorities talked about a garden on the lines of the Moghul Garden in Delhi. But now the plan has been changed and the garden will be laid out in Mysore style as was prevalent during the reign of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.
Rain water harvesting
Plans are on the anvil to set up a rain harvesting unit with a storage capacity of one crore litres, said Subrahamnya and added that in the first phase, a rain water harvesting unit with a capacity of six lakh litres has already been established at the Palace premises.http://www.starofmysore.com
s.yogendra February 19th, 2012, 06:46 AM Feeder airline services to link top tourism spots soon
A pilot project to connect the country's top tourism destinations by feeder airline services is expected to take off in November. The Golden Triangle — Delhi-Agra-Jaipur — will be the first tourism circuit to be covered under this project.
The project is likely to be launched on the public private partnership (PPP) model with the Union Government as well as stakeholders in the tourism industry joining hands to provide air connectivity for well-heeled tourists.
Speaking to presspersons after attending the meeting of South India Hotels' and Restaurants' Association here, Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India honorary secretary and Hotel Leelaventure Ltd. vice-chairman and managing director Vivek Nair said that three 16 or 18-seat jets would be procured on lease and introduced on the Golden Triangle circuit.
“IndiGo Airlines has been requested to operate the services. The feeder airline services may be expanded in the south, including Mysore, if the service on Delhi-Agra-Jaipur route gets good response,” he said. Compared to heli-tourism, feeder airline service is economical, with an extended carrying capacity, he added.
To a query, Mr. Nair said that the government and the stakeholders in the tourism industry may jointly run the project by pooling in resources. “There is a Central scheme which provides assistance up to Rs. 50 crore.”
One of the reasons for proposing feeder airline services was to provide connectivity to tourists to destinations at their convenience, he noted.
Whether Karnataka has the potential for operating feeder airline services, Mr. Nair said: “The route on which the Golden Chariot, the State's luxury train, operates has the potential for the service.”
He said that the Ministry of Road Transport has proposed “last-mile connectivity” to tourism spots following complaints of bad roads.
Beach tourism
Karnataka has not been able to promote coastal tourism in a big way as Kerala and Goa have done, although it has a 360-km coastline. “Hotels in Goa and Kerala register 100 per cent occupancy from November to March. We should develop infrastructure to promote beach tourism. Tourists from Russia and Kazakhstan are keen on experiencing beach tourism in India. We need to tap it,” he said.
Panel
He urged Mysore Hotel Owners' Association president Rajendra to constitute a local stakeholders' committee to develop tourism in and around Mysore. He favoured setting up of a tourism development authority for tourism promotion in Karnataka. Earlier, the executive committee of South India Hotels' and Restaurants' Association met at Fortune JP Palace. Association president K. Syama Raju, vice-presidents K.L. Ramanatha Bhat and G.V. Krishnaiah and secretary T. Natarajan were present.
Project expected to be launched on PPP model
Services may cover south India, including Mysorehttp://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article2909001.ece
s.yogendra February 21st, 2012, 05:28 PM PLANNING GREATER MYSORE: EMULATE BOGOTA MODEL
By H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana
Bogota, Capital of Columbia, was a country of extreme economic contrasts where a vast majority of people were poor. When Enrique Penalosa became the Mayor, he took matters into his hands and declared a 'war on cars.' Result: Bogota is one of the best examples of how committed action can transform the face of the city. Today it is the showpiece of sustainable development. Bogota's Trans-Milaneo Bus Rapid Transit System was set up at a fraction of the cost of subways and flyovers. Will our District In-Charge Minister emulate Bogota Model and come up with out-of-the box solutions?
District-in-Charge Minister S.A Ramdas during his address on 63rd Republic Day celebrations referred to slew of development plans for Mysore during the next two decades. It is learnt that the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) is under finalisation and now only awaits public interaction which is expected sometime during this month. After this process, it will be finally accepted. This is a welcome development.
At present MCC area is 129 sq. km. and the CDP being now finalised for the period 2021 as I understand covers 278 sq.km with its outer limit (conurbation area) extending up to Kadakola on the South.
Mysore, an enchanting island: Naturally, the present population of Mysore which is estimated at 10 lakh will substantially increase. However, the way developments are taking place Mysore is a happening city of the future. Already there are visible signs of development like mushrooming building activity, especially multi-storeyed buildings, hotels of all grades catering to all sections of people, state-of-the art malls, tourist places in city etc.
Other unique features are it is now declared as a Heritage City containing 200 heritage structures, the most important one being Mysore Palace which rivals in tourist attendance exceeding Taj Mahal which is considered as one of the seven wonders of the world. Besides, it has five water bodies, parks, the famous Zoo housing many exotic animals, reptiles and birds and towering over it stands the Chamundi Hill as sentinel with its 10th century Chamundeswari temple which is much revered and enjoyed patronage from the Maharajas.
Mysore has earned the fame as the city of intellectuals and art and culture. All round the year soulful music from famous artistes fill the air from various music halls while renowned the troupes that perform various system of dances and dramas in State-sponsored Rangayana attract visitors in hordes.
Another unique attraction is the Dasara Festival including the Dasara Exhibition during September-October. Besides holding art and craft melas and other attractive exhibitions create a carnival atmosphere throughout the year. Rightly, Mysore has become virtually a Tourist Paradise almost like an enchanting island, a stark contrast amidst the decaying urban chaos in other cities in India. Hence it is not surprising that New York Times ranked it in fourth place in the world as tourist attraction.
Road development: Roads form the arteries of civilisation and hence play a vital role in the life of people. Today's burgeoning population and uncontrolled vehicle population has the potential to nullify all development plans if no thought is bestowed as to how to bring about a balance to ensure that quality of life does not suffer. For a compact city like Mysore with about six lakh vehicles and road length of 1800 km, it is unable to sustain the pressure. The Result: Fatalities are increasing year after year; traffic jams are becoming the order of the day; parking is posing a worrisome problem creating social tensions when vehicles are parked on both sides of the narrow roads.
According to the statistics obtained for 2009 and 2011, 358 people died while 2,710 were injured in which 89% killed were pedestrians, cyclists and two- wheelers. This is not only a great economic loss but trauma for the family members. Just given the macro situation at national level, every year 1.3 lakh die on our roads which is highest in the world forming 12%. Speeding contributes 40% of traffic crashing and death, head-on collision accounts for 10% and 50,000 die as a result of drunken driving while 30,000 die due to hit-and- run entailing total economic loss of Rs. 75,000.
The government approach of widening the roads to meet this problem is a knee jerk reaction which not only destroys greenery but create noise and environmental pollution. It is not only narrow roads but condition of roads, traffic control etc., play a major part. The stream of letters appearing in the media is an eloquent testimony that points to the necessity for complete overhaul of the system where concept of responsibility and accountability has to be built into the system.
At the initiative of the MCC Commissioner I had interaction with about 70 engineers of the Corporation during which I had presented a check list to aid in delivering a quality road. There are signs of improvement and it needs to be taken to its lo- gical end. Concurrently, while improving road conditions, attention should be paid to provide extend facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic control measures: If today around 150 fatalities occur on city roads the reasons are two-fold. First of all, it suggests tightening of measures by traffic Police to strictly control traffic violations. Besides, the quantum of fines does not act as deterrent to stop repeated traffic violations. Therefore, it calls for substantially increasing the fines for various traffic violations and take legal channels to amend the present rules. Also there is a need for augmenting the traffic police force substantially. Concurrently there is a need for making public transport attractive. In fact, KSRTC has an envious record as regards the fleet service but it requires to be rationa-lised. It is needless to say the major responsibility devolves on the vehicle owners to abide by traffic laws and regulations.
The challenge: Though it is a great challenge to the planners, they may not despair for there are models that can be emulated. Bogota, Capital of Columbia, provides an excellent model. It was a country of extreme economic contrast where vast majority of people were poor. In this context, Mysore is fortunate. When Enrique Penalosa became the Mayor he took matters into his hands. He declared 'war on cars.' The result: Bogota is one of the best examples of how committed action can transform the face of the city. Today it is the showpiece of sustainable development. Bogata's Trans Milaneo Bus Rapid Transit System was set up at a fraction of the cost of subways and fly-overs.
There are other features that can be easily emulated by our Urban Planners. Just to cite a few of his initiatives: for two days every car had to be off the streets during rush hours; every Sunday some main roads were closed to cars so that people can come out on cycles, or jog or simply gather around and so on. This reduced crime rate also and enrolment in school went up.
Bangalore is already thinking of introducing 'Congestion tax.' There are many other variations. Mysore can follow its own model. Since Mysore has a very great potential for tourist attraction, it will help the city in many ways and financially very rewarding.
Our District Minister can emulate Bogota's example and come up with out-of-the box solutions. http://www.starofmysore.com
s.yogendra February 21st, 2012, 07:14 PM JUSCO Mysore project continues to draw flak
Over half the contractual period of six years lapsed, the project to remodel, manage and maintain Mysore’s water supply system by JUSCO continues in run in troubled waters.
The Jameshdpur Utilities & Services Company Ltd, continues to draw flak from all sections including the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and its beneficiary residents in 64 wards in Mysore, the erstwhile royal headquarters over its 161 crore project. A tripartite agreement between MCC, Karnataka Urban Water Supply & Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) and JUSCO was signed in November 2008 when the Tata enterprise bagged India’s largest water supply and operation management (O&M) project in Mysore. It was the first such project for an entire city to provide 24x7 water supply to its population.
After the initial one-year preparatory phase, the three-year second phase of rehabilitation which involved among other things operation, maintenance and improvement of the facilities and provision of water services in the distribution operating zone should have been at its last stage by now.
However, the progress so far has disappointed the MCC and its councillors, besides the residents, resulting in imposition of penalties on JUSCO for its ‘failure’ to meet the target.
At a meeting convened to discuss the water supply crisis in the city last wek, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raikar blamed JUSCO for its ‘incapacity’ to handle the projected entrusted to it. His criticisim of JUSCO came with statistics of the past three years.
He asserted that JUSCO has to provide drinking water to 1.75 lakh houses by December 2012 as per the contract. But only 50,000 houses are provided with water supply so far against the target of 70,000 connection till now.
When the project was launched in July 2009, he said a dozen wards facing crisis were identified. In 2011, about 35 areas of the city were yet to get adequate water supply It had complied with only 2,647 complaints out of 4,914 complaints till October last. Corporators attending the stormy meeting demanded termination of the contract and shouted slogans against JUSCO.
The Commissioner however turned down the demand saying ending the contract midway would throw up many problems. He had written to the State Government apprising the situation and to take a decision. KUWS&DB Executive Engineer Subbe Gowda said Rs. 2.5 crore penalties had been imposed on JUSCO.
While the JUSCO officials are being targetted at almost every meeting for their ‘tardy’ progress in excuting the city’s ambitious water supply project, officials hold techincal reasons for their achievement.
In its progress report on its website, JUSCO, however, claims that final rehabilitation prepapartion had been submitted as per schedule and discussions were in progress for seeking approval for submission of draft final investment plan. Interim rehabilitation plan submitted for 11 wards with the objective of starting work earlier than scheduled, to demonstrate benefits to citizens.http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/jusco-mysore-project-continues-to-draw-flak/465335/
engineer.akash February 23rd, 2012, 12:59 PM SpiceJet, Jet Airways offer to operate flights out of city
MYSORE: The turbulence in Kingfisher Airlines in November had led to cancellation of flight services to Mysore. Now, as the air operator is facing trouble, two other private airlines are preparing to reconnect the tourist hub to destinations like Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
This follows chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda's intervention to end the bad phase for the workable airport, which has been restricted to operating chartered flights since November 6, because commercial flights were cancelled by the Kingfisher Airlines. Gowda held a meeting with the various stakeholders including the representatives of the airlines and the officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on February 14 in Bangalore and asked the private airlines to get him a schedule. The airlines in return are seeking assistance to sell the tickets.
District minister S A Ramdas told The Times of India that SpiceJet and Jet Airways are interested in connecting Mysore to other destinations. "They have been asked to get back with proposals. They want assistance to sell the tickets through tourism and other departments. We can do that," he stated. The airlines are expected to come back to the government later this week.
To start with, both the airlines have offered to operate three flights a day connecting Mysore to Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi via Bangalore. The recent crisis in the airline sector will not affect the plans, he asserted. "We are hoping to include Mysore in the summer flight schedule starting mid-March," he stated. The airlines are procuring five mid-sized ATR aircraft by month end, he pointed out. The facility only allows mid-sized aircrafts to operate. The airlines are seeking to use Mysore facility to park the flights and night landing services, he stated.
During a preliminary meeting Ramdas held on February 4 in Mysore ahead of updating the CM, the stakeholders had sought extension of the runway to start operations and also to use the facility for parking of flights at night. The AAI officials had said that the operators are interested in operating flights to Mysore and are seeking extension of the runway. This is attributed to pressure at Bengaluru International Airport forcing them to look at Mysore for night operations, which can be done if the runway is extended. The Phase-II will allow wider bodied aircrafts including Boeing and Airbus to operate out of Mysore. The AAI had sought 311 acres additionally for the expansion project.
The crux of the problem is the realignment of part of NH 212 connecting Mysore to Nanjangud: The proposed runway cuts across the NH which is proposed to be upgraded into four lane expressway to ease traffic on the busy stretch. Though it was proposed in 2008 that the part of the NH has to be realigned to allow for the extension of the runway, there is no word on the acquisition of land to lay the NH. The Mysore Airport built to handle 150 passengers has 25 ground staff to manage the facility with the city police deputing 50 cops to extend security cover.
The AAI completed the upgradation of the airport in May 2009 when the commercial flights were planned. As it took time, the airport came to be used extensively for chartered flights with business leaders and politicians using it more often. When the airport started commercial flights in October 2010, it had handled over 100 chartered flights with top politicians including B S Yeddyurappa and Narendra Modi using it.
engineer.akash February 23rd, 2012, 01:13 PM CM to launch projects in city on March 3

Four hospitals and class rooms constructed in different parts of the district at a cost of Rs 330 crore will be dedicated on the day. Chairman of Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) L Nagendra who was also present said the chief minister will be distributing sites to 256 families of special task force (STF) personnel. The beneficiaries have already been informed in advance.
Flex free
The cultural capital Mysore is also set to gain with chief minister’s visit, in taking a step towards retaining the beauty of the city. The CM will be making an announcement on ‘Flex free city’ and an order to this effect will also be made.

engineer.akash February 23rd, 2012, 01:14 PM Three cities show interest in rooftop solar
CHENNAI, FEB. 22:
Jaipur, Mysore and Thane have come forward to do pilot projects for grid-connected rooftop solar, Mr Tarun Kapur, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, told Business Line. “Talks are on with one or two more (cities),” Mr Kapur said.
Grid-interactive rooftop solar power plant is the ‘big story' about the “solarisation” of India. Delhi, which had proposed a rooftop programme with feed-in tariffs as incentives, recently said it had give it up, because of the question “what if somebody produces electricity using a diesel genset and claims higher feed-in tariff meant for solar-generated power?” In contrast, Gandhinagar in Gujarat has gone ahead with the rooftop programme and has even awarded its implementation to two companies (Sun Edison and Azure).
Clearly, Mr Kapur pointed out, feed-in tariff is not the way to go about it, because it is amenable to fraud. The Ministry is therefore in favour of capital subsidies for rooftop projects, so that the cost of power generated is around Rs 7, not much higher than grid power. Today, as a thumb rule, a 10-kW rooftop system could cost Rs 22 lakh and would generate at best of times 4 units of electricity a day. The cost of generation works out to Rs 10-12, half of what it would have been even, say, three years ago, but still much higher than grid power.
engineer.akash February 23rd, 2012, 06:11 PM KARANJI LAKE TO BECOME POLLUTION-FREE SOON
Govt. approves replacement of damaged sewage line
Mysore, Feb. 23- Karanji lake, the popular tourist spot of city, will soon be free from water pollution which will be a big relief for both human and winged visitors.
Sewage water from nearby extensions was allegedly contaminating the water in the lake. Karnataka Zoo Authority had reportedly sought the approval of the government to utilise funds from the Chief Minister's special grant of Rs. 100 cr. to make the lake pollution-free which was accorded recently.
Briefing Star of Mysore on the matter, Authority Chairman M. Nanjundaswamy said, "Out of the total area of 90 acres, the water body spans 40 acres. The islets with greenery are popular nesting places for birds. Though separate sewage lines have been provided for the neigh-bouring layouts, owing to a few cracks in the pipe lines, the sewage water was getting mixed with storm drain water and entering the lake. The government has approved the change of sewage pipe line passing near Annadaneshwara temple, which is damaged, at a cost of Rs. 3.3 crore. The work will be completed in 9 months which will make water at Karanji lake pollution-free."
Nanjundaswamy added that seven islets in the lake would be revived with afforestation and a few birds from the Zoo would be let into the new enclosures.
rocky23 February 24th, 2012, 05:46 AM Mega commercial complex near Freedom Fighters Park in limbo
MYSORE: Mysore City Corporation's proposed swimming pool and commercial complex with multi-level car parking facility near Freedom Fighters Park on Narayan Shastry Road seems to be a distant dream.
MCC acquired the leased property in December 2009 and proposed to construct hi-tech swimming pool and commercial complex along with parking facility for two-wheelers and four-wheelers at a cost of Rs 11crore. But even after two years, the project is yet to be started. Earlier, the property housed the Bahusar swimming pool, which was a landmark in the city for over five decades. It was demolished after MCC took over. Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna told TOI that she would look into the project and take necessary steps at the earliest.
Meanwhile, MCC commissioner KS Raykar said the project has been taken up under CM's Grant of Rs 100crore to the city. A detailed project report will be submitted to the government soon. The commissioner said, "The work will be taken up in a phased manner. First, they will be constructing a swimming pool of international standard, then a commercial complex and multilevel car parking work will be done." The estimated cost for the pool is Rs 4crore while the commercial complex with multilevel car parking will cost another Rs 7crore. "Though we have many swimming pools in hotels, schools and colleges, only the pool in University of Mysore is open to public. Hence, the proposed pool will be great news for swimmers," Raykar said.

rocky23 February 24th, 2012, 05:51 AM Electronics manufacturing region's new calling card?
There are over 500 units in the Mysore-Nanjangud corridor
State policy identifies Mysore-Nanjangud corridor as electronics hardware manufacturing hub
‘Policy an acknowledgement of the rise of Mysore as a centre for knowledge-based industries'
MYSORE: The identification of Mysore-Nanjangud corridor as an electronics hardware manufacturing hub is testimony to the emergence of knowledge-based industries in the region.
The State Government on Monday launched the Karnataka Electronics Hardware Policy with a thrust on tier-II cities, and the Mysore-Nanjangud corridor is among the three major regions identified for propelling electronics hardware manufacturing in the State, with a focus on medical electronics.
The region is expected to compete with Tamil Nadu, where major brands such as Samsung, Cisco, Sony Ericsson and Nokia have established manufacturing or research bases.
Stakeholders here have welcomed the Government's policy. They hope it brings benefits by way of relaxation of duty and tax, and simplification of land acquisition norms.
Over two decades
However, Suresh Kumar Jain, general secretary, Mysore District Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Association, said the emergence of Mysore as a hub for electronic manufacturing units had nothing to do with government policy.
He pointed out that there were over 500 large, medium and small electronic manufacturing units in the region.
“Electronic manufacturing units have emerged in Mysore over the last two decades owing to the entrepreneurship of local industrialists, availability of trained labour for lower wages than in Bangalore, conducive industrial environment and Mysore's reputation as an educational hub, among others. It is akin to the growth of the information technology industry in Bangalore, which evolved on its own. The government policy came later,” Mr. Jain said.
Nonetheless, the new policy was an acknowledgement of the rise of Mysore as a centre for knowledge-based industries, he said.
Good support
Bhanuchandran, business analyst and consultant, told The Hindu that Mysore had a good support system for major original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
“Mysore has slowly evolved as a major electronics manufacturing hub with the emergence of companies such as Vinyas Innovative Technologies Pvt. Ltd., which started in 2001 with an employee base of 600. There are other renowned groups here such as AT&S and L&T medical equipment division.”
Mr. Bhanuchandran said a memorandum had been submitted to the State Government over 10 years ago, seeking subsidies and recognition of the region's potential as a manufacturing hub. “But it has taken the authorities more than a decade to recognise this potential,” he said.Although the government policy is to promote medical electronic manufacturing in Mysore, observers say growth cannot be confined to a specific sector.
Jobs
“There is bright future for electronics manufacturing units to scale up and benefit from the Union Government's offset policy, as per which 30 per cent of the country's defence orders normally placed with foreign companies have to be locally invested to create jobs. With the defence sector opening up for private participation, opportunities are immense for growth and specialisation,” Mr. Bhanuchandran said.
The electronics industry here reportedly provides direct employment to more than 10,000 people, with potential to create additional job opportunities.
s.yogendra February 25th, 2012, 11:51 AM Cheluvamba Hospital awaits nod for new block
‘100-bed block will meet the growing demand for healthcare'
Cheluvamba Hospital, one of the largest women and children's hospitals in Mysore, is awaiting the State Government's nod on a proposal to open a new block with a 100-bed capacity to meet the increasing demand for healthcare.
The century-old, State-run 400-bed hospital is attached to Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI).
MMCRI had sent the proposal to the Government for a two-storeyed block on the hospital premises.
Speaking to The Hindu , MMCRI Director Geetha Avadhani said nearly 35 babies were born every day at the hospital. On many occasions, patients did not get a bed because all would be occupied.
The hospital had two labour wards, each with eight delivery tables. “There have been times when women in labour were made to wait for their turn because all the tables were occupied,” she said.
“This is why we need a new block,” Dr. Avadhani said.
Ruling out scope for expanding facilities in the present hospital building, she said the Gynaecology Department could not be shifted to expand the labour wards because it was a teaching hospital and PG students underwent training there.
On an average, 30 patients were admitted at the hospital daily, she said.
Funds sought
Besides, Cheluvamba, K.R. Hospital was also attached to MMCRI under the Department of Medical Education. Both had together sought Rs. 27 crore for developing infrastructure. The Government sanctioned Rs. 15 crore and had asked the hospital managements to submit a revised proposal for the release of funds.
For general hospital
A major chunk of the funds usually went to K.R. Hospital, which was a general hospital that catered to patients from Mysore and neighbouring places.
Priority, according to sources, would be to upgrade operation theatres, six at K.R. Hospital and two at Cheluvamba Hospital.

engineer.akash February 26th, 2012, 07:10 AM Work on Aloka Forest Heritage Centre at Yelwal under way
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00935/23bgMYKJCHI-W032_G7_935420e.jpg
Big plans:There is also a proposal to develop the heritage building at the project site at Yelwal in Mysore into a full-fledged forest museum.— file photo: M.A. SRIRAM
Work on the Aloka Forest Heritage Centre at Yelwal, 14 km from here on Mysore-Hunsur Road, is under way.
Announcement about the project, coming up on 530 acres of land, was made seven months ago by the then Minister for Forests C.H. Vijayashankar.
Lung space
The project, which is expected to be completed in five years, will serve both as visitors' paradise and a critical lung space for Mysore city. The heritage centre would also serve as a model for conservation, education and amusement.
The project is part of a special drive to make urban areas of the State greener by taking up afforestation in residential and industrial areas.
The Department of Forests aims to achieve 33 per cent green cover in the State. Currently, green cover in the State is around 23 per cent against the national average of 17 per cent.
Tree plantation work has commenced at the project site.
Compound wall
The work on constructing the compound wall has been taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.75 crore, said Manoj Kumar, Conservator of Forests (Research), Dharwad.
Mr. Kumar, who was associated with the project as the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mysore, is still a member of the committee in charge of the project. Borewells dug at the site were giving high yield, which, Mr. Kumar said was a positive sign.
However, the Union Government had withdrawn the funds allocated initially for the project. Though there was no separate staff of the Department of Forests to monitor the progress of the project, the jurisdictional staff was in charge of it, he said.
The project is making progress in spite of talks that it will run aground with Mr. Vijayashankar losing the Forests portfolio and the transfer of the then Conservator of Forests, Mysore B.P. Ravi (He is now Executive Director of the Mysore zoo.) and Mr. Kumar.
The Centre for Environmental Education (CEE), an agency under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, had come up with a plan to develop the spot scientifically.
The plan was to divide the 530 acres into several plots, and develop each of them with a unique concept.
The project is expected to receive substantial funds from the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority of the Government of India.
There is also a proposal to develop the heritage building at the site, from which the Chamaraja Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) functioned for a couple of years, into a full-fledged forest museum. The uniquely designed, magnificent building is said to be built in the beginning of the 19th century by an Irish resident, modelled on a mansion in Ireland.

rocky23 February 27th, 2012, 10:21 AM Will parking on roads be a thing of the past?
MYSORE: The city traffic cops want to do away with on-street parking. The men in white have proposed to discourage on-street parking in city limits to ease congestion.
ACP Shankregowda said they have asked the district administration and Mysore City Corporation to utilize open government places in the central business district (CBD) for the parking of vehicles.
The authorities have been requested to provide the open space adjoining Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry on Vinobha Road for the purpose, but the proposal is yet to be considered. Likewise, suggestions on utilizing the government land opposite KSRTC suburban bus stand on BN Road and to construct a cellar parking space near Mysore Palace parking facility are also pending.
This will help them to address at least 50% of parking problems in the core area. "Presently, the city doesn't have adequate parking facilities, which is affecting smooth flow of traffic, especially during peak hours," the ACP said at an interaction programme organized by Vijaya Karnataka, a sister publication of The Times of India, on Saturday.
The main aim is to discourage on-street parking on the lines of Chandigarh and several advanced countries, where off-street parking facilities are created to ease congestion. "Roads are meant for movement of vehicles. But in India, 30% of the road is used for parking, leading to congestion," he said.
Meanwhile, MCC town planning Joint director Chowdegowda assured the police to clear the cellar area in some business establishments which have been presently closed for parking. He claimed to have issued notices to nearly 200 business establishments for violating law -- by utilizing the cellar for purposes other than parking -- and soon they will intensify the drive to make building owners to fall in line.

rocky23 February 27th, 2012, 10:35 AM Karnataka’s luxury train Golden Chariot gets all-time high patronage
MYSORE: An increase in the occupancy rate this season has given a welcome fillip to Karnataka's luxury train - Golden Chariot - which takes tourists to several destinations in South India between October and March. The occupancy rate has touched 42% already and is expected to reach 45 per cent in the next few rides. This is the highest occupancy rate since its launch four years ago. When it was started by tourism department and Indian Railways in 2008, the occupancy was just 20 per cent.
In the second year, it increased to 25% and later rose to 40 per cent.Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation Project director Srinivas said, ''This year the occupancy rate has increased to 42% which is the all-time high since its launch. We are expecting 45% passenger traffic by the end of this season.'' Apart from getting tourists from the US, Switzerland and England, this year the corporation has received tourists from countries such as Brazil, Austria and Australia. The Golden Chariot was launched for the first time in South India with an aim to promote tourism and aid tourists to have a glimpse of various places in south India. On slashing rates for domestic tourists, he said, ''In a bid to attract domestic tourists too, we have given 20% discounts. In the initial years, the chariot used to ply only in two states - Karnataka and Goa. It was extended to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala with the new tag 'Southern Splendour.' This helped to increase the tourist inflow. We have overcome all shortcomings and would be in a good position by 2014.''

s.yogendra March 1st, 2012, 01:26 PM Bacardi Martini sets up new product development centre in Nanjangud, Mysore
Family-controlled spirits firm Bacardi Martini is accelerating its presence in India. It has set up a new product development centre at its Nanjangud plant in Mysore, signalling its plans to create local brands.
All of the new product development for the maker of rums, Grey Goose vodka and Dewar's Scotch was earlier done in the US. The centre in India will now serve all of South Asia.
"The growing importance of India in the region and keeping the consumer at the heart of all our innovation, it was felt that we would be able to do it with a centre in India," Mahesh Madhavan, Bacardi's president & CEO-South Asia, says.
Several multinational spirits firms have been rolling our local whiskies to straddle a larger market as imported spirits carry high tariffs in India. The maker of Royal Stag, Blender's Pride and Imperial Blue whiskies, Pernod Record was the first to bet on this strategy. Last year, Diageo Plc too launched Rowson's Reserve whisky in India.
Bermuda-headquartered Bacardi counts India among its fastest-growing markets. It entered India in 1998 through a joint venture with Mysore-based Gemini Distilleries, which owned 26% stake in the business. In 2009, it acquired this local partner. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/cons-products/liquor/bacardi-martini-sets-up-new-product-development-centre-in-nanjangud-mysore/articleshow/12097187.cms

MUDA Chairman L. Nagendra, MLA Suresh Gowda, Artist V.B. Hiregoudar and others taking a look at the paintings displayed at the expo.
Mysore, Mar.5 - Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Chairman L. Nagendra has announced that a proposal would be placed during the presentation of MUDA budget this month to construct an art gallery in city.
He was presiding over the inauguration of the four-day painting expo organised by White Space Art Centre at Suchitra Art Gallery in Kalamandira premises here on Saturday.
"Right from the days of Maharajas good encouragement is being given for art in city. In that connection, MUDA proposes to identify a place coming under its jurisdiction to construct an art gallery to promote art. The co-operation of the artists will be sought to identify the land for the gallery. The H-category sites being allotted by MUDA for artists goes strictly by the stipulated rules with no discrepancy," reiterated Nagendra.
Launching the expo, MLA Suresh Gowda observed that the field of art was not getting its due priority in India as compared to the west. He, therefore, suggested the establishment of an exclusive University for art.
The expo which concludes on Mar. 6 showcases 30 exquisite paintings brought to life by 22 artists. The themes include education, dejection in life and rituals.
Shivakumar Kesaramadu and Vittal Reddy F. Chulaki of White Space, Senior Artists V.B. Hire-goudar and others were present.

LUVMYSORE March 8th, 2012, 04:28 AM Dear Friends,
I am looking to invest in mysore and hopefully would settle down in 5 years down the line.
I am looking for 40X60 MUDA plots in a decent locality which is closer to city limits and within a budegt of 10lakhs.
Could anyone suggest some good and safe projects please?
Thanks,
Ram
engineer.akash March 8th, 2012, 04:36 AM ^^MUDA plots are difficult to get, since you are planning to settle down in Mysore,I would suggest you to go for private layouts close to ring road somewhere around manandavadi, basvanhalli, vijaynagar.btw rates for 60*40 plot around ring road are 35-40 lakhs. 30*40 are around 25 lakhs.
60*40 plot for 10 lakhs might fetch you somewhere on hunsur road near yelwala, which is very far from the city center.Try apartments if u are comfortable.
LUVMYSORE March 8th, 2012, 05:18 PM Thanks akash.
I have lived in apartments all my life and would want to build a small house of my own some day. Though I am not originally from Mysore I love the fact Mysore is a beautiful place with a great all round year weather.
Howz this place elavala? I found some MUDA sale listings in major portals , what is your view on the future of this Hunsur road and the areas around there?
It would be difficult for me to personally visit any of these sites right now, so I would like seek as many views before I can decide.
Thanks,
Ram
engineer.akash March 8th, 2012, 05:27 PM ^^Welcome Ram,Mysore is beautiful.
Yelawala is seeing good growth, infact Hunsur road is developing faster compared to other arterial roads emerging out from Mysore.Hunsur road is considered to be an investment hot spot, people have bought land for investment purpose only as of now, houses on private layouts are yet to be built in this area.Though Hunsur road is seeing highest development.
I would recommend you to stay close to ring road on the western half of Mysore, where houses are being built and few good shops are in the vicinity. But the cost of 60*40 plot is pretty high.
To be honest if you really want to enjoy Mysore. stay in city area like Lakshmipuram etc or a bit far away like saraswathipuram or kuvempunagar, ramkrishnanagar too is good....Buying a plot in city area is next to impossible now,but apartment options are there though rare now.
Let me summarize:
LONG TERM INVESTMENT(Cost low -650rs/sq ft
Yelwala,Hunsur road
SHORT TERM INVESTMENT - 1500rs/ sq ft
Western Half ring road- Datagalli,Basvanhalli,Vijaynagar,Manadavadi,Bogadi
IMMEDIATE OCCUPATION 3000-4500 rs/sq ft
Ramkrishnanagar,Kuvempunagar

The Union ministry has given 300 rare photographs
The first ever full-fledged museum on the life and achievements of Babu Jagajivan Ram, once deputy prime minister of India, would be established in Mysore shortly.
Babu Jagajivanram Study, Research and Extension Centre under the University of Mysore has planned the museum, for which even funds have been mobilised. The consultative committee has already taken a decision to this effect and vice-chancellor V G Talwar’s official approval is awaited. MP A H Vishwanath has released Rs 25 lakh under his local area development fund and MLC Siddaraju has released Rs 5 lakh. A small museum exists at Babu Jagajivanram Research Centre at Lucknow, but it is not a full-fledged museum.
The centre, under the university, which was set up 12 years ago has chalked out the plan to popularise the life, ideals and thoughts of Babu Jagajivanram among the masses. Babu Jagajivan Ram’s daughter and Lok Sabha Speaker Miera Kumar has agreed to donate many articles belonging to her father to the museum.
Even the Union ministry for social justice and empowerment has donated over 300 rare photographs, including those in which Babu Jagajivan Ram is seen with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
A statue of Babu Jagajivanram would be installed in front of the museum. Books written by Babu Jagajivan Ram on various issues like politics and social transformation would be housed in the museum. All books written by Babu Jagajivan Ram would be translated into Kannada and kept in the library along with books published on him in other languages like Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil. Babu Jagajivanram’s pen, spectacles, clothes and books with his autograph would also be on display.
The centre also plans to set up a audio-visual hall, where visitors would be able to listen to recordings of Babu Jagajivanram’s speeches in the Parliament and watch video clippings, said director of the centre Mylahalli Revanna.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/233003/babu-jagjivan-rams-museum-mysore.html

engineer.akash March 9th, 2012, 08:46 PM Create facilities for businesses, urges Mysore industry
The Mysore District Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Association (MDMSMEA) has sought the creation of infrastructure in the industrial areas of Mysore to attract new investors and boost industrial activity.
In a set of demands for inclusion in the 2012-13 budget of the state government, it suggested to the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) the development and management of 4,000 acres now under acquisition process in addition to the existing industrial area of 6,500 acres. “Mysore has the second largest industrial area after Bangalore and thus the Mysore industrial area is uniquely placed in the industrial map of the state,” Association General Secretary Sureshkumar Jain said in a letter to the principal secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce who is also the KIADB chairman.
Towards this end, a major proposal that has been made is for an investment of Rs 75 crore on improving the roads in the industrial areas by widening, repairs and modernisation, besides drainage system.Another major suggestion is for initiating process for setting up “Mysore Industrial Township Authority” by designating the KIADB development officers as authority’s nodal officers/chief promoters.
The general secretary has also pleaded inclusion in the budget proposals construction of a helipad for the benefit of major industries located in Hebbal, Metagalli, Hootagalli, Belagola, Koorgalli, Belavadi and Pura-Anaganahalli industrial areas of Mysore.
A public-private partnership model for the maintenance of street lights in the industrial estates with modern technology and by adopting solar energy harvesting is another suggestion made by MDMSMEA. Rs 10 crore has been sought for replacement of the 30-year-old water pipelines and motor pumpsets in addition to installation of generators.
Drawing attention to KIADB’s earlier resolution, Jain suggested a 20-acre land for the collection and disposal of solid waste in the Koorgalli industrial area. Sanction has also been sought for housing facilities for industrial workers, staff and industry owners in accordance with 2009-14 industrial policy.
Another important facility sought by the MDMSMEA to be included in the 2012-13 budget is construction of a Rs 50 crore business convention centre, seeking financial support from Central agencies on a 50-acre land in Mysore.
It has suggested for development of separate industry-wise clusters like electronic, food, general engineering, textiles, chemicals, packaging, granite among others for their orderly growth in the new industry area. Besides, sites may be reserved at 30 per cent each for micro and big industries, and 20 per cent each for small and medium industries MDMSMEA said pleading for steps to check real estate operation in industrial areas. While making these suggestions, Jain has assured MDMSMEA’s total support in their execution.

The JSS institutions, along with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), with a vision of giving the cricketing world an international class cricket infrastructure, have developed a cricket ground to provide opportunity to youngsters of Mysore Zone to play on an international standard ground.
Speaking at a press meet at the newly developed cricket grounds at SJCE campus in city this morning, former Indian team bowler and KSCA Secretary Javagal Srinath said that approximately Rs. 60 to 70 lakh was spent to develop the ground while the machineries like rollers, grass cutter etc. itself cost Rs. 35 lakh alone and said that this is an international standard pitch.
"A total of 14 grounds in cities including Bangalore, Shimoga, Hubli, Belgaum, Mangalore, Chikkamagalur and Hassan will come up shortly," he said.
"There are different processes involved and top most care is given to make a good pitch like cutting and leveling the field and compacting the top surface, wh-ich took about two months besides preparing the cricket pitch in the centre which took about three months by using bricks, jelly stones and clay brought from Chamarajanagar," said Srinath.
When asked about the invo-lvement of Rahul Dravid in future, Srinath said that Dravid has contributed a lot and will contribute more in future.
Former international cricketer Roger Binny, speaking on the occasion, said that the need of the hour is to make good pitches and summer camps are being held in 27 districts of the State in which 60 boys from each district will be trained.
Former Ranji player and convenor KSCA Vijayaprakash, speaking to Star of Mysore, said that a part of the wooded area has been developed into a beautiful ground with green outfield within a short span of time and thanked the SJCE College authorities for their effort in giving their much needed help to KSCA.
Vijayaprakash said Mexican grass has been used for the preparation of ground — best suitable for tropical conditions.
The future plans of KSCA is to develop the infrastructure and will be erecting player stands in the grounds at Gangotri Glades and the SJCE grounds which would add more colour to the venue and would make them fit for conducting higher level matches. KSCA intends to utilize the grounds for at least 220 days a year and will be conducting matches of different levels regularly at both the grounds.
The SJCE cricket grounds will be inaugurated tomorrow at 9 am by Suttur Seer Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji which will be presided by former spinner and President, KSCA, Anil Ku-mble. Chairman, KSCA, Mysore Zone, Ashwini Ranjan will address the gathering, Executive Secretary, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysore, B.N.Betkerur, Director (Technical), JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysore, Prof. M.H. Dhananjaya will be the guests of honour, Treasurer, KSCA, Tallam Venkatesh and Principal, SJCE, Mysore, B.G.Sangameshwara will be present.
A 20-20 under 16 and 19 combined match will be played tomorrow after the inauguration. http://www.starofmysore.com

engineer.akash March 10th, 2012, 06:52 PM MCC plans multi-level lots, exclusive policy
Sreekantswamy B, March 9 2012
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2012/03/09/parking.jpg
Multi-level parking lots is the only solution, with Mysore City Corporation (MCC) too having plans to go for it. According to the proposals put forth by MCC, such lots are identified to come up at Town Hall premises, Gaadi Chowka in Nanjumalige and also opposite KSRTC sub-urban bus stand on Bangalore- Nilgiri road.
Similar proposal by Zoo at the existing parking lot opposite the menagerie is learnt to have been shelved. In addition to this, the city corporation in July last had resolved in the council meeting to come out with a parking policy.
Most importantly, the policy strongly advocates for pay and park. According to the policy the roads in the city will be classified as heritage core, A, B and C and on street and off street basis. In the first- the heritage core only pedestrians and non-motor vehicles will be allowed.
In the A zone- where only roads with free flow of traffic will be identified, parking space will be created after ensuring adequate space for vehicles and pedestrians. Here the toll for parking and rules will be very strict. In the case of C, where less used roads will be identified- there will be slight relaxation in rules and fee. In the case of B, the rules and fine will be in between A and C. The policy also stresses on making maximum use of the space available near government offices, hotels and also malls during the off-peak hours to accommodate the vehicles of others. The off-street parking here means- multi-level parking lots.
Operation cellar
Another much talked about yet to be initiated action by the civic body is operation cellar.
According to an estimate by the city corporation itself, nearly 226 commercial buildings were found violating the set rules in the building plans. The afore said buildings owners had rented out the cellar space earmarked for parking, for other purposes. When the councillors had raised a hue and cry against the same, the commissioner K S Raykar had informed the council about the intended plans to launch the operation from temple road in V V Mohalla. What remains to be seen is will this operation really happen?
Welcome move but we must not compromise on the heritage, other cities can close their eyes and go ahead with such projects Mysore is special, it needs to think twice before taking up such eyesore projects.
engineer.akash March 10th, 2012, 06:52 PM Finding parking space, a daunting task
Woe continues
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2012/03/09/raod-mysore.jpg
The growing Mysore city has its share of good and bad. The good is all want to own a vehicle of their own, and the bad is all want to ferry on the same vehicles even for a shorter distance, leaving behind public transport, adding to the existing parking problems, writes Sreekantswamy B
If you are planning to visit D Devaraj Urs road in the city, better wear patience on your face. Not that you have to pass through the traffic jam to reach the destination, but because you have to scout for a location to park your vehicle.
Thanks to the growing vehicle density in the city of palaces which has already touched five lakh mark and shows no signs of stopping further. Of the vehicles, two-wheelers account for majority at 80 per cent, closely followed by two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
D Devaraj Urs road and Sayyaji Rao road are the twin commercial hubs of the central business district, wooing people in large numbers. From reputed footwear showrooms to swanky tiles, branded garments to mouth watering dishes, the road is the place for all. Though the dedicated places have been earmarked to accommodate vehicles of types, it’s still a herculean task for the vehicular owners to find a place to park.
According to Devaraja traffic police under whose jurisdiction the road is located, the first and foremost problem is increasing number of vehicles and also lack of adequate space to provide parking facilities. In the case of Urs road alone, there are numerous issues working against providing parking facilities for all.
Though the road boasts of commercial buildings, none of them have cellars to provide parking facilities for the vehicles of customers. Agreed to the fact that majority of the buildings exist from the time when vehicles were the chattel of a few, the shopkeepers ignored to create space for others as and when the years passed. As a result, parking woes on the stretch has become a routine like.
Of the vehicles parked, most belong to the shopkeepers and the staff employed by them. It’s obvious for the vehicles to be parked from 10 am to 9 pm till the shops close for the day’s business. Then the space left for others is not much-be it customers or others.
Another reason is haphazard parking in the form of two-wheelers standing on side-stands. In the case of central stand, there will be sufficient space left for the vehicles to stand on either sides. Another reason coming in the way of parking is metal platforms connecting road and footpath put up by the shopkeepers again. At times, frustrated to find space, the vehicular owners especially of cars park in prohibited zones thus inviting the wrath of policemen on duty.
Amid this, the new thing is the vast compound of Devaraja traffic police station has turned into a parking lot for the vehicles bringing people to Urs road. The said portion of the land where vehicles are allowed to park now, is identified for the proposed Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan.
Similar is the story of adjacent roads- Srirampet, Sayyaji Rao road, Dhanwantri road to name a few, where too parking remains a problem far from ending. The situation at localities too is no different where finding parking space at times is a serious cause for concern. While some of the gates in the front of the houses proudly bear the boards announcing- no parking in front of the gates, some others take it too seriously to enter into a wordy duel.
Cops say
When City Herald enquired with the traffic police they blamed both public and civic body for the current pathetic situation. According to them the only solution is the introduction of pay and park facility, that could at least minimise the use of multiple vehicles in one family. Though pay and park is in force, it’s only in small pockets.
According to Karnataka Road Safety Rules, parking of vehicles near the signal lights in the radius of 30 feet is prohibited. In the case of unmanned signal lights it is 50 feet. But vehicle owners prefer to violate hindering the line of sight, without much ado.
Violations and fine amount
Parking of two-wheelers in prohibited zones attracts a fine amount of Rs 300 and for four-wheelers it is Rs 200. In the case of Devaraja traffic police alone, in the year 2011, 10,377 cases were booked against two-wheelers and 12, 997 against four-wheelers.
In the year 2010- 9,492 two-wheelers and 7,547 four-wheelers were booked.
rocky23 March 11th, 2012, 04:23 AM Another turf wicket for city
MYSORE: The JSS-KSCA cricket grounds at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering campus is set for inauguration. Among the 14 grounds proposed by Karnataka State Cricket Association across Karnataka, JSS-KSCA one is the first to be inaugurated on Sunday. Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami will grace the occasion, while former captain and KSCA president Anil Kumble will preside over the event at 9am.The JSS Institution, along with KSCA, has evolved the project with a vision to promote the game and also to develop infrastructure. This will give an opportunity to youngsters of Mysore zone to play on an international-standard surface.
KSCA president Kumble and secretary Javagal Srinath have put in their best effort to provide good infrastructure facilities to aspiring cricketers. The grounds is located on nearly four-acre land with five turf wickets at the centre and three turf wickets for practice apart from two concrete wickets besides the ground. Though the city has three turf wickets -- Gangotri Glades, Infosys, Bharatiya Note Mudranalaya - only the former is easily accessible for cricketers. The non-availability of more turf wickets was hurting the prospects of talented youngsters. Practice on turf wicket helps aspiring cricketers perform better in tournaments as most of the tournaments are played on turf wickets. "Our motive is to provide good facilities to cricketers, 80% of cricket should be played in turf wickets," said Srinath. According to Srinath, three grounds in Bangalore, two each in Shimoga and Hubli, and one each in Belgaum, Chikmagalur and Hassan will come up in the next six months. "The facility at JSS-KSCA grounds is of international standards..." said Srinath, promising to conduct Subbaiah Pillai Trophy and many state-level tournaments there. As of now, KSCA has spent nearly Rs 70 lakh for constructing the same. Former Indian all-rounder Roger Binny said true wicket is need of the hour. "Pitches should be ideal for both batsman and bowler.
In India, most of them are batsmen-friendly. That's the reason we suffer when we play outside," he added. The memorandum of understanding between KSCA and JSS Institution was signed on June 2011 for 10 years. More infrastructure will be added to the grounds in a phased manner. League matches will be played on turf wickets, and aspiring cricketers in and around Mysore would gain good experience. Speaking on the pitch, for which Mexican-type grass has been used, Srinath said: "It is our endeavor to make it one of the fastest pitches. We brought clay from Chamarajanagar (the one which was used for preparing Gangotri Glades)," he added. He also said the nature of the wicket will be known after a year.

JhonJ March 11th, 2012, 08:24 AM New expressway may link Mysore and Bangalore
MYSORE: You may get another road to travel between Bangalore and Mysore. The state government proposes to build a six-lane expressway between the two cities. The proposed road is an extension of the six-lane state highway under construction between Bangalore and Malavalli in Mandya district.
The expressway will be 140 km long, the same length as the existing state highway. The Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor, being built by NICE, has lost its way in controversies.
Mysore's minister-in-charge S A Ramdas on Saturday revealed the plan for the expressway when faced with complaints from industrialists and hoteliers here about poor connectivity to Bangalore and the delay over BMIC.
Ramdas told STOI: "The Bangalore-Malavalli six-lane expressway project has been approved and work has started at Kanakapura. We are planning to extend the expressway from Malavalli to Mysore. I will place the proposal before the cabinet.''
Participating in pre-budget talks, the industrialists and hoteliers complained about the delay in the broad-gauge doubling project and the cancellation of flights between the two cities.
Ramdas replied: "I know the problems related to connectivity. If the BMIC was through, it would have catered to your demand. We are now pursuing a project to build a six-lane expressway between the two cities. It is being processed at both state and central levels, and approval is expected soon."

s.yogendra March 12th, 2012, 04:56 PM Minister hears demands for budget 2012
Funds sought for restoration of Palace, garden on lines of Akshardhama among others
Funds to restore Amba Vilas Palace that completes 100 year this year, developing full-fledged export centre and helipad at industrial area, release of subsidy due for small scale industries, dedicated authority for Dasara, infusing new lease of life for Mandakalli Airport that has remained orphaned after revocation of services by Kingfisher Airlines, were some of the major demands putforth by the various agencies at pre-budget meeting in the city on Saturday.
The meeting chaired by the medical education and district in-charge minister S A Ramdas received memorandum from various organisations like- Mysore Industries Association, Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mysore Hoteliers Association, besides various departments of the government.

The deputy commissioner demanded Rs 50 crore for the works in the forthcoming budget.
Commissioner of Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) C G Betsurmath also sought financial assistance in the budget for developing park on the lines of Aksharadhama in Gujarat.
A total of 35 acres identified for the park on Lalitha Mahal road will boast of a musical fountain, amphitheatre and also battery operated train among other attractions. He also demanded funds for intended memorial to come up at celebrated English writer R K Narayan’s house in Yadavagiri here.
The commissioner reminded the minister that the authority had earmarked Rs 50,000 to take up a survey for monorail way back in 2005 itself.
Chairman of Mysore Industries Association P Vishwanath wanted six MGD of water from the up coming Kabini second stage project for industries, at the cost of Rs 100 crore.

Sculpted at Pulivendula near Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh, it took 28 artisans to chisel the statue out of a single 700-tonne stone to give it a broad outline before transporting it to Mysore on Sunday. The transportation required a specially assembled vehicle with more than 80 wheels, and took 14 days to cover the distance from Kadapa to Mysore. “Artisans and sculptors will work on it for another eight months before it is installed at the ashram in December,” according to its http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article2989665.ece
rocky23 March 13th, 2012, 08:40 AM Making best out of waste
MYSORE: Mysore Zoo has embarked on a plan to generate revenue out of its 'waste' dry leaves. Deciduous trees usually shed their leaves in autumn, and there are over 1,500 of them in the 69-acre facility. Earlier, large quantities of leaves used to be collected and burnt. But the zoo authorities now want to convert the leaves into compost, which they feel, will also bring down air pollution levels. The zoo, had in 2005, started producing vermin compost using garbage and dung of herbivores, which fetched good revenue. In the previous season, they earned nearly Rs 10 lakh from vermin compost. Mysore Zoo houses about 170 species of animals and birds and has Karanji Lake in its jurisdiction. Two months ago, a team of five workers was deployed to collect leaves from the zoo premises and Karanji Lake surroundings.
For the purpose, three huge pits have been dug near the lake, and they are being filled with four tractorloads of leaves. This apart, animal waste and kitchen waste are also being used to make compost. Speaking to TOI, Mysore Zoo executive director BP Ravi said the initiative serves two purposes -- of checking air pollution and helping farmers with compost at a lesser price.
s.yogendra March 14th, 2012, 07:22 AM MUDA to set up four ‘autonagars'
They are expected to rid the city of a number of automobile workshops
The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) is planning to create ‘autonagar' units in four places in the city. It is aimed at keeping the city clean and avoiding inconvenience to the people who would have to drive by a number of auto repair workshops and garages in the city.
The first such autonagar project is expected to come up at Nachanahalli, near Bandipalya under survey numbers 112 and 143/3, measuring 5.18 acres.
The process of identifying lands to establish three other autonagar units would be done soon.
The MUDA has sent a proposal to the Government requesting it to earmark funds for the purpose. The authority has told the Government that mobilising funds on its own was difficult since the body worked on a ‘self-financing budget' model and hence needed budget assistance.
In the proposal submitted to the Government, MUDA has requested it to earmark a Rs. 15 crore to take up the projects.
MUDA Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath told The Hindu . “The autonagars will be constructed at least five to six km away from the city limits,” he said. After their establishment, citizens with all types of vehicles including private ones, would have to take them for repair to the autonagars. This is also expected to rid the city of a number of automobile workshops which have even encroached on the roads and footpaths.
“Almost all facilities will be provided under one roof at the autonagars,” Mr. Betsurmath said.

engineer.akash March 14th, 2012, 07:44 AM MCC will do away with unscientific bus shelters
(http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/MCC-will-do-away-with-unscientific-bus-shelters/articleshow/12257286.cms)
MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) council on Tuesday resolved to remove unscientific bus shelters that have mushroomed in the city.
MCC chief K S Raykar told the council that they would do a survey to check unscientific bus shelters and relocate them accordingly. He also warned action against assistant commissioners of all the nine corporation zones for the fault of theirs on this score, if any.
The Times of India had recently reported about unscientific bus shelters causing inconvenience to road users. The corporation council, which took serious note of the issue, on Tuesday decided to do away with such shelters after some council members referred to the TOI report.
Cutting across the party lines, corporators demanded a relook into the requirement of new bus shelters that have come up across the city, and asked the MCC commissioner to relocate them to appropriate places. Lambasting the official machinery over unscientific shelters, the council members ridiculed that location of bus shelters is based on commercial aspects, rather than serving the basic purpose.
Corporators Sunanda Palanethra, Sathish Swamy, Ayub Khan and P Devaraj said advertizing mafia has cropped up in the name of bus shelters and it has been commercialized. Even shelters have been created at unnecessary locations and also at close distances. They also asked the authorities to stick to one advertizing policy. Devaraja said on one side, officials ban advertizing hoardings in heritage core area, but on the other hand, they give permission for ads at bus shelters in the core area.
Demanding action against the officers concerned, Sathish (aka Sandesh Swamy) suggested to create bus bays at all bus shelters to facilitate smooth flow of traffic.
Raykar explained that 'Intelligent transport system' is being implemented in Mysore -- a first in the county -- with funds from World Bank. "Under the scheme, the corporation is supposed to create 800 bus shelters in city, but KSRTC authorities had agreed for only 116, of which the work on 46 is complete," the commissioner stated.
Deputy mayor M J Ravikumar, who chaired the meeting in the absence of mayor Pushpalath Chikkanna, intervened and gave a ruling to present a detailed report about the bus shelter project in the next council meeting.
engineer.akash March 14th, 2012, 02:12 PM MCC TO COLLECT PROPERTY TAX FROM REVENUE LAYOUTS
Mysore, Mar. 14- In a bid to boost its revenue, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) yesterday unanimously passed a resolution to collect property taxes from revenue layouts as done by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
This was decided at the MCC Council meeting held at Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Auditorium and there are 60,000 beneficiaries in 28 revenue layouts in city.
Deputy Mayor M.J. Ravikumar, who chaired the meeting, said that a detailed report on the matter will be forwarded to the government for approval,
Sites and houses at revenue layouts will be considered as 'B' category and the MCC plans to collect taxes from houses built in violation of MCC rules, sites at illegal layouts, properties beyond alienated areas and commercial complexes, without completion certificates and no objection certificates, measuring below 6000 sq. ft., will be taxed.
Former Mayor Sandesh Swamy said that non-implementation of the policy will give a boost to real estate business and added that there was a need for formulation of a separate policy for Mysore aimed at benefiting the beneficiaries.
Corporator P. Devaraj alleged that there was 1,000 acres of govt. land in the city and taluk and various illegal layouts had come up there and urged that the policy should not be misused for formation of illegal layouts and that the beneficiaries should get facilities after paying taxes.
Corporator Linganna sought that owners of vacant sites in revenue layouts should be given 'B' category khatas as done for those who have built houses.
Some Corporators opposed an action plan for spending of Rs. 2.97 crore aid given to MCC for 2011-12 as per recommendations made by the 13th Finance Committee as the funds had not been uniformly released for all the Wards.
They finally agreed when MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar assured that the funds would be spent without discrimination.

engineer.akash March 17th, 2012, 07:29 AM Floral spectrum... around palace (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/234982/floral-spectrum-around-palace.html)

Mahadeshwara Swamy,Mar 16,2012:
Mysore the legendary city is famous for its beautiful palaces, heritage, salubrious climate and rich flora and fauna.
There are many floral hotspots on tank bunds like Kukkarahalli tank, Karanji lake, Zoo, Chamundi Hills and innumerable gardens. Even in the heart of the city one can find the beautiful trees and handsome shrubs. One such area is around the magnificent palace. It is the ‘Green belt’ around the palace housing beautiful gardens and thickets of trees.
It is one of the hotspots of floral biodiversity in Mysore and rich in tree population. It acts as a buffer zone between the palace and the busy roads, insulating the palace from the dust and noise pollution, as well.
A walk around the area unravels the mystic beauty of the floral display, a real treat to the eyes of the passersby at the beginning of the “Spring Season.” Spring is an intermediate seasonal phase in between winter and summer. It signifies the emergence of new life. The trees with new attire of foliage and colourful blooms present a floral spectrum in this floral hot spot. In fact the flowering trees announce the arrival of the spring season .
With the winter blooms like Pink trumpet tree (Tabebuia impetiginosa), Golden showers (Tabebuia guayacan) , Mexican lilac (Gliricidia sepium), Tree jasmine or Aakasha mallige (Millingtonia hortensis) signing off their show, the early bloomers provide an outstanding floral and foliage display at the beginning of the Spring.
The common rain tree (Samanea saman) copper pod (Peltophorum pterocarpum) and Honge (Pongamia pinnata) are already in flowering and catch the attention of the passers by. But the more delightful to watch are some of the exotic and native trees. Most attractive is the Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia) near the main gate facing the East. It is a beautiful sight to watch the majestic tree with its full violet bloom hiding behind the fort and providing a colourful background to one of the gopurams.
The jacaranda tree, native to North America, is a tropical beauty with its clusters of fragrant, purple, trumpet-shaped blooms. Near the Harding circle, inside the garden nursery is the beautiful rose apple (Eugenia jambos ), a small tree cheers up with its light cream flowers and the edible fruits. Curzon park adjascent to the bus stand has many surprises during the early spring.
The magnificent ‘Red cotton tree or the Kempu booraga’ (Bombax ceiba), inside the park, attracts the visitors with its gigantic size and the heritage tag. The most attractive tree is the Cannon ball tree or Nagalingana pushpa (Couropita guianensis ), a large deciduous tropical tree indigenous to the Amazon rainforests, with large showy flowers, curiously shaped in the form of ‘Shivalinga’ and cannon like fruits.
Borne on long woody racemes, growing from the main stems the flowers emit peculiar strong fragrance.
These trees are grown extensively in Shiva temples in India and Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, Thailand and other Buddhist countries. Furthermore, nearby lonely ‘ Travellers’ palm’( Ravenala madagascariensis ) with banana like leaves arranged in the form of a flat fan shaped head to the tree attracts every one visiting the park.
Its white flowers are quite distinctive and most beautiful. Interspersed in the palace gardens (outside palace) on the western side facing Sayyaji Rao road are the Horse Cassias and Plumerias.
True to its name ‘Cassia grandis’ (horse cassia or pink showers) its grandeur lies in the outstanding floral sprays of coral peach red , scattered along the branches in loose clusters along with remnants of the black pods of the previous season.
Of course one cannot forget the beauty of Plumerias of different hues ( white, pink, yellows) with mild fragrance. Unforgettable is the Tabebuia aurea ( Caribbean trumpet tree) with its outstanding flower display of trumpet shaped golden flowers.
Added attraction is the sight of plenty of birds perching on the trees and their chirping is music to the ears of a naturalist.
To sign off, more surprises are in store in the days to come. For a visitor to the palace and its environs floral spectrum is a bonus; for the passers by a visual treat in the hot sun.
