Summit expected to bring in investment of Rs. 6,000 crore

Making a point:FKCCI president J.R. Bangera (second from right) speaking to presspersons in Mysore on Monday.— PHOTO: M.A. SRIRAM
The Mysore Region Business Development Summit expects to attract investment of Rs. 6,000 crore. Also, it is expected to generate nearly one lakh jobs in the region.

The business summit, which will be held on May 4 in the city, is being organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) and the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), in association with other partners.

Already, 118 MoUs have been signed in the run-up to the summit which, the organisers claim, can generate 23,000 direct jobs, while the indirect employment generated can be up to three times more.

This was stated by FKCCI president J.R. Bangera, who pointed out that the summit would attract investments and public-private partnership projects to the region from the private sector.

Objective

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Bangera said the objective of the summit was to provide a forum for the State government, private sector agencies in the areas of manufacturing sector, tourism, infrastructure and food processing to interact with investors and entrepreneurs. There was an immediate requirement of 1,342 acres of land to implement the signed MoUs.

The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Authority was in possession of 1,680 acres, MCCI president Sudhakar Shetty said.

However, Mr. Bangera pointed out that in view of the steep increase in land prices, the FKCCI and other stakeholders had submitted a proposal to the government to make land available on rent-cum-lease basis for a period of 5 to 10 years.

Mysore was reckoned to have a better industrial base than Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan.

These districts would receive special attention, he said. A preliminary meeting will be held between the investors, district-level leaders and local industrialists here on May 3.

The summit will be inaugurated by Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda.

State Bank of India installs cash deposit machine in Mysore

A cash deposit machine that will work round the clock has been installed at State Bank of India's main branch on New Sayyaji Rao Road here.

It is said to be the country's first round-the-clock cash deposit machine introduced by the bank.

Senior SBI officials said the launch was a step towards environment-friendly paperless banking. It was a convenient way of depositing cash without having to wait in queues, they said.

Businessman Subraya Baliga, a longstanding customer of the bank, launched the machine.

Senior SBI officers Krishna M. Trivedi, Neerja Nigam, Shrikant Katti and G.M. Gokaran were present.

According to SBI Mysore main branch, the maximum amount that could be deposited per transaction was Rs. 49,900 and the maximum number of notes acceptable per deposit was 200 with denominations of 100, 500 and 1,000.

Speaking to presspersons after the launch, Mr. Trivedi, general manager (network II), said the deposit machine was launched for the first time in the country.

Calling it a “green initiative”, Mr. Trivedi said the bank was planning to introduce cash deposit machines in other cities also.

A customer must possess an ATM card to deposit cash into the machine. The cash gets credited into the account instantaneously, and the machine issues a statement of deposit. There are simple steps to follow to deposit cash into the machine.http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/karnataka/article3371220.ece

Assure us 20 seats, we’ll fly to Mysore: SpiceJet

If not, government will have to reimburse ticket cost

Six months after the ailing Kingfisher Airlines suspended its operation to Mysore, low-fare carrier SpiceJet Ltd has evinced interest in providing air connectivity to the City of Palaces from the State capital.

SpiceJet has come up with a proposal to offer one-stop connection to travellers from Mysore to three different destinations – Chennai, Hyderabad and Goa via Bangalore and vise versa.

The airline officials recently held the first round of talks with Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, who has shown interest to restore air connectivity to Mysore before 2012 edition of Dasara festivities.

The cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines, which launched its service to Mysore with fanfare in October 2010, abruptly suspended its daily flight to Mysore in November last year.

Kingfisher used to operate 62 or 72-seater flights on all seven days a week.

Conditions apply

SpiceJet has, however, laid down two major conditions to the State government to fulfill: first, it wants the government to guarantee 20 seats per flight and second, ensure that permission is accorded for night landing facility at the airport.

The company has said flight operation will become financially viable only if these conditions are fulfilled, Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas, who is also Mysore district in-charge Minister, said. “The airline wants a guarantee for minimum of 20 seats per day to make its operation financially viable. In other words, the government will have to reimburse the fare to the airline if the occupancy is less than 20 seats in a flight. For instance, if the occupancy is 15 seats in a flight, the government has to reimburse the fare for remaining five seats (fare amount). The company wants the government’s support in the form of guarantee only for the initial six months,” the Minister explained.

The estimated burden on the government on guarantee would be Rs 20 lakh. Spicejet has prepared a detailed proposal in this regard, and it will be presented before the chief minister shortly, Ramdas said.

As per the State Infrastructure Policy, airlines operating to tier-II cities in the State can avail special concession on aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

The government charges only 4 per cent sales tax on ATF airlines operating to these cities.

Officials skeptical

Officials in the State Infrastructure Development department are skeptical about the proposal being financially viable in the long run. Kingfisher Airlines could not sustain the operation due to poor air traffic. Most travellers prefer KSRTC air-conditioned bus service between Bangalore and Mysore to travelling by flight.

This is because travel time by road is less compared to air.

It requires almost two hours to reach the Bengaluru international airport from the City and board the flight, about 20 minutes of air travel and 20 minutes to reach the destination in Mysore.

But one can reach Mysore in about two-and-half-hours by road from Bangalore at much lesser cost. As a result, Kingfisher could not make profit, officials pointed out.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/246557/assure-us-20-seats-well.html

Karnataka showcases Mysore region as MSME, tourism destination

The Department of Industries and Commerce in Karnataka is planning to showcase Mysore region as MSME and tourism destination.

“During the Global Investors Meet (GIM) road show both in India and Far East (Singapore and Japan) we got good responses to set up MSME units and tourism related investments,” said a senior department official.

“The department has got investments proposals to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore and MoUs will be signed during the global investors meet (GIM) to be held in June,” he added.

Only Mysore has a reasonably good amount of manufacturing share (16.1 per cent) in its district income.

The other five districts are basically agriculture based. Of the rest, Mandya and Hassan have relatively better manufacturing base.

Of these six districts, only Mysore district is relatively better developed and contributes 4.4 per cent to the state GSDP. The remaining five districts contribute 7.9 per cent to Karnataka GSDP.
Industrial base

According to industry department statistics, Mysore district has better industrial base, followed to some extent by Hassan and Mandya. The bulk of the large and medium industries, 42 out of 60, are in Mysore district, followed by seven units in Mandya and eight units in Hassan.

Even in the case of small-scale industrial (SSI) units, of the total 66,458 SSI units in the region (as on March 31), Mysore with 23,663 units (36 per cent), Mandya with 9,804 units (15 per cent) and Hassan with 12,099 (18 per cent) have a bulk share of about 70 per cent of the units in this region.

According to the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) study, barring Chamrajanagar district, other five districts of the Mysore region consisting of Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya and Mysore have fair amount of industrial base.

Also the region is fairly well placed in the Human Development Index rankings.

However, there is wide variance in the development of these six districts.
Connectivity

Both roads, railway and air connectivity to the city has improved. Road connectivity between Mysore to Mangalore plays and important role as it connects to the port (New Mangalore Port) and for the development of industry and tourism in this region.

Railways – Track doubling works is expected to complete in 2012-13 and railway electrification surveys to be conducted this year (2012-13).

Mr J.R. Bangera, President, FKCCI, said “The most vital Mysore-Sampaje stretch road is completed. We urge the government to expedite the work on widening of Sampaje-Ghat section to Mani so that it is completed by end of June 2012.”

Mysore airport plays a major role in improving the tourist inflow in this region, along with adding value to the IT-BT and other industries.

“Government should negotiate with the service providers to start operating flights to the Mysore airport with smaller aircraft,” said Mr Bangera. http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/economy/article3380944.ece?homepage=true&ref=wl_home

Mysore region business summit targets big audience

A one-day Mysore Region Business Development Summit tomorrow is hoping to attract massive investments to the Mysore region.

The summit expects to attract investments of Rs 6,000 crore and generate about 100,000 jobs in the region.

To be inaugurated by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, the summit aiming to showcase investment opportunities in the region, is being organised jointly by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FKCCI) and its arm Mysore Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in association with the Karnataka government.
Among others, Large & Medium Scale Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani and Small Scale Industries Minister Narasimha Nayak (Raju Goud) will also participate.

A spate of MoUs are expected to be signed at the event. Already, 108 MoUs have been initiated for the summit, with the hopes of generating 23,000 direct jobs.

This will be followed by presentations on tourism with a special focus on Mysore zone, infrastructure connectivity, food processing and trade, and IT, BT and banking. A presentation on overview of industrial development and present issues will also be made to showcase the potential of investment opportunities in the region.

While Mysore is witnessing better development in the zone, the rest of the districts are agri-based and need attention for industrial development, Bangera said.

The presentations will be made, according to the organisers, by Tourism Department Principal Secretary G Latha Krishna Rao, Infrastructure Development Secretary Rajkumar Khatri, Agriculture Department Additional Secretary Vasanth Kumar, Infosys Education & Research Senior Lead Principal K S Sundar and Industries Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao.

Besides investments, the summit will attract public-private partnership projects too, according to FKCCI President J R Bangera.

Highlighting the facilities available for investors, he said the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board had 1,680 acres for industry purposes, while the immediate requirements for the projects for which MoU have been signed and listed for the summit was around 1,342 acres.

In view of the sky-rocketing land prices, the government had been asked to effect a policy change to make land available on a rent-cum-lease basis over five to 10 years to help investors.

A special thrust is on tourism as Mysore has abundant opportunities in the sector as it is a tourist-centric city by itself, apart from tourist potential the region had.

As the tourist inflow is rising year-on-year, opportunities were immense in tourism-related infrastructure development.

The organisers expect around 1,500 industrialists to part in the summit, of whom over 500 are new industrialists.

No decision yet on resumption of commercial flights

Authorities hopeful of a breakthrough in a fortnight

A stakeholders' meeting on Thursday on resumption of commercial flights from Mysore was inconclusive, though the authorities expressed confidence of a “breakthrough” in a fortnight.

It was part of the ongoing process to restart commercial flight operations from Mysore airport following suspension of Kingfisher's daily service more than six months ago.

Members of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysore chapter, representatives of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), and a representative of Jet Airways were present. CII representative Biswajit Mitra made a presentation on the potential of Mysore and pointed out that nearly 20,000 passengers, most of them tourists, patronised the service when it was in vogue for a year.

Kingfisher offered a no-frills flight connecting Mysore and Chennai via Bangalore.

For many passengers, it provided connectivity to other cities from Bangalore. However, the timing of the flight, which used to depart from Mysore at 1.10 p.m., was perceived to be odd and was not welcomed by industrialists.

The CII has suggested introduction of three early morning flights (between 5.15 a.m. and 5.50 a.m.) from Mysore to reach Bangalore by 6.15 a.m. This, according to the CII, would help passengers get more connecting flights to Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

Later, U. Harish Shenoy, General Manager, (Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh), Jet Airways, told presspersons: “I have heard the suggestions of stakeholders and will come back to them soon.”

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, said: “No concrete decision has been taken. Wait for another 15 days”.

Mr. Mitra also exuded confidence of a breakthrough in a fortnight.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3382415.ece

This includes a special package for conservation of the Chamundeshwari temple and its precincts taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.49 crore, and a new drinking water project ( Rs. 65.5 lakh) for the benefit of 450 families comprising about 2,000 people atop Chamundi Hills.

The steps leading to Devi Kere on Chamundi Hills will be embellished, while a new counter for distribution of prasada and tickets to pilgrims will be constructed. The local community on Chamundi Hills has voluntarily surrendered nearly eight acres, which will be purchased at the prevailing market rate to rehabilitate the hawkers and vendors dealing in puja items.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Minister in charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas said the auditorium on the Mysore Zilla Panchayat premises — renovated at a cost of Rs. 61.5 lakh — would also be opened by the Chief Minister. Mr. Gowda would be in the city to inaugurate the regional-level business development summit being organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), and he would lay the foundation stone for a swimming pool to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 3.25 crore in the city. Works would commence on the sports complex coming up at a cost of Rs. 99 lakh at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium, said Mr. Ramdas. The laying of a synthetic surface at the hockey grounds in Mysore — a long-pending demand of sportspersons — would be taken up, Mr. Ramdas said. The work is being implemented by the Mysore Urban Development Authority , for which Rs. 2.96 crore had been earmarked. The Chamundi Vihar Indoor Stadium would be paved with a wooden surface for Rs. 86.83 lakh with funding from MUDA.

The foundation would be laid for a library at the People's Park for Rs. 4.08 crore, while a new library constructed at Vivekananda Nagar for Rs. 30 lakh would be inaugurated.

The restoration and embellishment of Nishad Bagh in the heart of the city would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.07 crore under the Chief Minister's special component scheme.

In addition, Karanji Kere, Devi Kere, Alanahalli Kere and Nadanahalli Kere would be rejuvenated at a cost of Rs. 2.73 crore, according to Mr. Ramdas.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3382861.ece

The organisers expect around 1,500 industrialists to part in the summit, of whom over 500 are new industrialists.http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/mysore-region-business-summit-targets-big-audience/473322/

Mysore will be developed into a major industrial hub, says Sadananda Gowda

The State government will lay emphasis on developing Mysore city not just as an acclaimed tourist centre but also as a major industrial hub of the State, Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has said.

He was inaugurating and laying foundation stones for a series of development works at the Chamundi Hills on Friday after offering puja to the deity.

The State government had decided to focus on the development of tier-II cities such as Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum by developing industries there, Mr. Gowda said, adding that this would also decongest Bangalore city.

The government was looking at resuming flights to Mysore from other destinations, he said.

As an industrial hub

People already knew Mysore as a tourist spot, but they should also recognise the city as an industrial hub, Mr. Gowda said. Mysore had abundant space, water, electricity and other basic requirements to develop industries.

About 2,000 acres was currently available while another 1,500 acres was in the process of being notified, he said.

Works

A special package was inaugurated for preserving the Sri Chamundeshwari temple and its surroundings taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.49 crore, foundation stone was laid for a swimming pool (Rs. 3.25 crore), a sports complex (Rs. 99 lakh) and a synthetic turf for hockey (Rs. 2.96 crore) at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium.

Foundation stone was also laid for the construction of a library at the People's Park at a cost of Rs. 4.08 crore. Rejuvenation of the Daivikere near the temple, Karanji lake, Alanahalli tank and Nadanahalli tank would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 2.73 crore.

The Chief Minister, following a request from Mysore district in-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas, said the government would consider the proposal to constitute a regional authority for tourism, heritage, exhibition and nada habba (THEN) in Mysore.

CM doles out goodies for Mysore district

DVS at MyZIM: High speed bullet train between Mysore & Chennai may be reality soon

During his visit to the heritage city, where he flagged off a slew of developmental works and announced important projects for the economic progress of the district, chief minister Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the Mysore Zonal Investors Meet (MyZIM), held at Senate Bhavan of the University of Mysore on Friday.

Addressing the participants at MyZIM here, CM Sadananda Gowda said the high-speed bullet train service proposed between Chennai and Bangalore will be extended up to Mysore.

“With this, the journey between Mysore and Bangalore will be a matter of minutes, and not hours as it stands now. This is being done to improve connectivity between the two cities and add pace to the industrial growth in the region,” he said.

He also hinted that the work for the project could well begin in December, this year.

Promising that the work will be done at a fast pace, to aid the project take off faster, and not be caught in the bureaucratic hurdles, Sadananda Gowda said the preliminary work relating to the project will be finalised in three months.

“Having decided on the design during these three months, the state government will formally submit a project report to the Centre, vouching its full support to the bullet train project. And, since we have already got feelers from the Central government that they are also in favour of this, work will be taken up on war footing,” said Gowda.

Revealing that the issue has been discussed with Union minister for urban development Kamal Nath, who has responded in a positive manner to the concept, a report would be tabled at the Centre,” he said.

Plans for tier II cities

Further, elaborating on the plans that the state government was drawing up to add momentum to economic progress of tier II cities, showcasing potential areas of growth, CM said a draft plan for Mysore was already prepared and this would be shared at Global Investors Meet.

“Bangalore, the capital city of the state, is bursting at the seams with development, since many businesses continue to thrive there. It is now time that we shared the progress with other parts of state as well, especially to Tier II cities, than holding everything up in capital alone,” he added.

With plans of economic progress on the radar, Gowda said infrastructure in all parts of the state would receive a boost with improved infrastructure as well. “As far as infrastructure is concerned, port connectivity between Mysore to Mangalore, a four-lane highway connecting Mysore and Nanjangud, facelift to Hassan-Mangalore highway are at various stages of completion. This apart, a 40 km underground tunnel has been proposed along the Hassan-Mangalore route to tackle the problem that crops up with frequent landslides in ghat sections around Sakleshpur,” he added.

Stating that Mysore division contributed nearly 12 per cent of the state GDP, the government has set a target to take it to 20 per cent through industrial development, which is imperative now, he also extended invitation to investors and entrepreneurs to participate in the Global Investors Meet (GIM) scheduled to be held in Bangalore on June 7 and 8.

Minister for large and medium scale industries Murugesh Nirani and other elected representatives were also present.

Skyrocketing land prices

On this occasion, representing the industrial sector, J R Bangera, president, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) spoke and mentioned about the land price in the state which was skyrocketing. “This is impeding new investors. It would be a good idea for the government to consider a proposal seeking land allotment on rent or a lease basis for 33 years to encourage growth,” he said.

President of the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Sudhakar Shetty sought abolition of entry tax for tourist vehicles entering city from other states, so as to encourage tourism sector and hoped the government would work on establishing industrial township authority tier II cities, including Mysore.

The Meet was organised by the FKCCI, MCCI and the department of industries and commerce. About 400 entrepreneurs and potential investors participated. The organisers said MoUs committing an investment to the tune of Rs.10,500 crore had been signed, to generate over 51,000 jobs in the district and surrounding districts.

Film city in district

Announcing that a film city would soon come up in the city, which carries great tourism potential, chief minister Sadananda Gowda said Mysore district and surrounding areas were big on manufacturing and agro-based industries.

This apart, an international-standard convention centre would soon come up on 35.2 acres of land on Mysore-T Narsipur road.

The city’s potential also provided for planning an Ayurveda City, creating an image of district being destination for health tourism. A pharmaceutical park would also be in the offing, he said.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/247030/cm-doles-goodies-mysore-district.html

‘Mysore to be industrial hub’

Emphasising that the government was bent upon creating ‘Brand Mysore’ by making it into an industrial hub, CM Sadananda Gowda said this would be done along with creating better infrastructure for tourism.

He was speaking after launching various works for rejuvenation of lakes at Chamundi Hill, taken up jointly by district administration, zilla panchayat and Mysore City Corporation here on Friday.

“Mysore has the perfect ambience for industrial development. Land and basic infrastructure is aplenty in the city. About 2,000 acres of land is readily available and steps are being taken to acquire another 2,000 acres. With Mysore growing as an industrial hub, jobs would be created in thousands,” he said.

Stating that with tier II cities progressing economically, the state would definitely benefit in the long run. “We are for all cities achieving industrial progress, taking focus away from Bangalore to help create opportunities in other cities,” he said.

Revealing that district in-charge minister Ramdas had sought a regional authority for Mysore, the CM said though it cannot be denied, it cannot be done with immediate effect.

“The city would soon connected through air again. The district administration and state government are discussing with airline companies and this would be materialised soon,” he added.

“The government has come up with an innovative plan to rejuvenate lakes and ponds. Stress is on conserving groundwater table and create better facilities to maintain water bodies,” he added. District in-charge minister S A Ramdas said about 32 lakh tourists visited Chamundi Hill last year and it is a major tourism centre in the state.

“We will restore its original glory, which the hill possessed 700 years ago. All shops and hotels atop the hill would be shifted to a commercial complex planned to be built on eight acres of land which has been recently acquired. Drinking water facilities for both residents, villagers and visitors would be created. Devikere, situated on the hill would be developed,” he added.

The chief minister also launched works relating to a huge library, estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 4.08 crore, with Vivekananda Library being inaugurated on the day. Music fountain would start functioning again at Nishad Bagh, after the works are completed.

“A Regional Authority would be of great help with six districts coming under this, including Mysore. This will facilitate showcasing culture and heritage at global level,” Ramdas said, adding Nanjangud temple had obtained ISO certificate and this had slotted it alongside 10 most popular temples in the country.

Landowners who have parted with eight acres of land for construction of complex atop the hill were felicitated on the occasion. Ministers Murugesh Nirani, Raju Gowda, Revu Naik Belamagi, MLCs Thontadarya, Mallikarjunappa, MLA Satyanarayana, mayor M C Rajeshwari, ZP president Suneetha Veerappagowda, DC P S Vastrad, MUDA chairman Nagendra, regional commissioner Jayanthi and others were present on the occasion. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/247025/mysore-industrial-hub.html

Karnataka bullet train plan put on fast track (http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_karnataka-bullet-train-plan-put-on-fast-track_1684722)

Close on the heels of the proposed bullet train between Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore by the Southern Railway, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda has assured that the state’s first inter-city bullet train will run between Mysore and Bangalore.

The proposal will be ready in less than three months and sent to the Union urban development ministry, he added.
Briefing presspersons on Friday at the helipad on his arrival at the city, Gowda said “I have met union urban development minister Kamal Nath, who was enthusiastic about the plan and wanted the proposal be sent to him in three months.

The technical details were being already worked out and the Mysore-Bangalore railway corridor was stable to take high speed railway traffic. The bullet train will lessen the travel time between the two cities by more than half,” he said.

“The train will improve not just the commutation speed, but boost tourism and urban development. However, many things have to be worked out, like the technical feasibility, funding, availability of land and other aspects. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has been asked to prepare a feasibility report,” he said.

Gowda also said that “efforts were on to make Mysore the best tier II city in the state. Road connectivity to the city from Bangalore, Hassan and Mangalore was also being improved into four-lane highways. This will boost the chances of industrial and commercial interests of the city. I have already campaigned for the industrial growth of the state in Delhi and Mumbai, inviting entrepreneurs there to set up units in Mysore.”

The chief minister asserted that, contrary to what some say, the city was not short of power, water and land for industrial development. “In times to come we will show to the world that Karnataka is the best industrial investment destination in the country,” Gowda said.

CM doles out goodies for Mysore district (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/247030/cm-doles-goodies-mysore-district.html)

Mysore, May 4 2012, DHNS:

A pharmaceutical park would also be in the offing, he said.

More to Mysore than heritage: Sadananda Gowda (http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_more-to-mysore-than-heritage-sadananda-gowda_1684727)

Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Friday announced a number of sops for the city of palaces at the inaugural ceremony of the Mysore Zonal Investors meet 2012. This includes an international standard convention centre, a pharmaceutical park, a film city, a cricket stadium to host international matches and better air connectivity. To top it all he also announced a 50% cut in the trade licence fee.

“Why I am doing all this is to tap the maximum potential this city has for attracting investment in industries and infrastructure. Much attention has not been given to this city in this regard. Mysore was left alone to be a city of palaces and relics, but I feel that apart from being such a great heritage city, it should also become an international destination for industry, knowledge and tourism.” The International Convention Centre will come up on a 35.32 acres land on T Narsipura Road, he added.

Bangalore GIM: The global investors meet proposed to be held in Bangalore in June was expected to attract an investment of over Rs6 lakh crore for the state. It was Rs4 lakh crore in 2010.

Throughout his speech Gowda kept on hinting at the Mysore-Mangalore road link, “Somehow I feel that the Mysore-Bangalore-Mangalore triangle will be the future growth zone, the exporters will have to be given a port connectivity through New Mangalore Port, which will help the exporters to set shop in Mysore,” the CM said.

University library goes hi-tech

With On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), public can access more than 2.5 lakh bibliographic records on UoM library’s URL. The library patrons can search for any book available in the university library and any of UoM constituent colleges,Centres,PG Centres, writes S Shivaranjini

In spite of having a rich collection of books and records, the library of University of Mysore at Manasagangothri has been a bit late in adopting new technologies, but promises of providing quality services to students.

With On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), public can access more than 2.5 lakh bibliographic records on UoM library’s URL. The library patrons can search for any book available in the university library and any of UoM constituent colleges/Centres/PG Centres. OPAC provides a glimpse of books available on either side of the book selected by providing virtual shelf.

OPAC is searchable on mobile at URL http://mopac.mysore-univ.org, the UoM has become one of the few universities in the country to adopt the mobile technology for library services. Probably this is the first university library in the country to use cloud hosting facility for automation related activities of all its constituent libraries situated in different cities that too by creating union catalogue.

The University of Mysore has nurtured its library with rich document collection since its establishment in 1916. The library building measuring 1,15,000 sq. feet on Manasagangotri campus was formally declared opened in 1966 by S Radhakrishnan who was the then President of India.

Apart from the main library, the UoM Library system has more than 50 libraries including University Graduates Library at Maharaja’s College campus, libraries at three post-graduate centres, different college/institutes and departmental libraries.

More than a million documents including books, journals, thesis, reports, apart from rare and specialised collections covering history of Mysore, Administrative Reports of the Princely State of Mysore and contemporary collections like Ambedkar, Gandhi, etc are housed here.

Vice Chancellor of UoM Prof V G Talawar, himself with Library Science background has taken initiative of providing necessary technological-based services to students of UoM and public. Ex-scientist and head of information centre at National Aerospace Laboratories of Bangalore I R Nagana Goudar who serves as a advisor to the library said, “The Varsity has worked out a mechanism to allow public, especially the senior citizens to use these resources owned by its library by collecting a nominal fees.”

Digital Information Resource Centre (DIRC), set up in June 2010 has around 120 computers and more than 500 users per day. In-charge librarian Ramashesh claims that it has brought an IT awareness among majority of students with rural background.

“Apart from searching the e-resources, students can prepare their project reports and power point presentations. This increasing popularity of DIRC has encouraged the University authorities to construct another floor on the library building,” he said.

The ultimate aim of student community is to make up a bright career. With the fore-thought Career Information Resource Centre (CIRC) is set up separately within the library premises. It holds the collection of books on general knowledge, general aptitude, functional English and question bank series apart from specific to different career related examinations which include resources for competitive examinations.

‘Special’ grant

Learning Resource Centre for visually handicapped and partially sighted persons is being set up and would be complete within a month, says Talawar.

The Library is in the process of acquiring a variety of technology and software including JAWS Pro-Talking software, a screen reader that works with a computer to provide access to software applications and the Internet.

“The useful library and information technologies along with necessary infrastructure to facilitate and deliver information services to the user community have been implemented innovatively and appropriately by UoM Library.

Thus the library has taken a big leap in realising its informally defined vision and mission in providing seamless access to information to users in a networked environment by creating and acquiring digital content useful for its patrons to support and enrich their research, teaching and learning activities,” said Goudar.

Explaining his further ventures regarding library, Talawar told Deccan Herald that second floor of library would be coming up in few days extending of DIRC with more than another 250 computers. Affiliated colleges and hostels of University would be made avail of using OPAC. Undergraduate library would be upgraded and priority would be the text books for students. Regarding the funds allocated for books and journals in UoM budget, he said, more than Rs one crore has been made use for journals, textbooks, e resources etc.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/246976/university-library-goes-hi-tech.html

Mysore zoo proposes setting up ‘African savannah zone'

It is part of a project on establishing theme-based displays

The zoo plans to conduct studies on the behaviour of animals and birds such as wolves and African hunting cheetahs.

Even as the Mysore zoo management is set to table its draft master plan before an expert panel from the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA), the zoo authorities are contemplating grouping animals from the African savannah and putting them in uniquely designed enclosures, defining the area as ‘African savannah animal zone'.

According to zoo sources, the proposal is part of a project to establish theme-based display of animals and birds following a “suggestion” from the committee, which visited the zoo recently.

The main aim of this is to educate visitors on protection of wildlife and conservation.

The other themes proposed at the zoo include grouping and display of birds found in Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary in an aviary. Crocodiles too may be displayed in this zone since the sanctuary is home to crocodiles too.

Captive breeding

Speaking to The Hindu , Executive Director of the zoo B.P. Ravi said the expert committee had advised the zoo to take up captive breeding of endangered species considering the zoo's “impressive” track record.

He said the Mysore zoo had the maximum number of exotic species. “Nearly 47 per cent of the collection comprises exotic species though the zoo has been categorised as a medium zoo and is supposed to house less than 30 per cent exotic species. However, an exception has been made for Mysore zoo since it has a long history and reputation,” he said.

He said the zoo planned to conduct studies on the behaviour of animals and birds, particularly hornbills, dholes, lion-tailed macaques, wolves and African hunting cheetahs.

Mr. Ravi said the draft master plan was almost ready and the layout (with plans on enriching the theme-based enclosures within the available space) of the zoo was being readied to be tabled before the CZA.

“Once the draft gets clearance, we shall incorporate changes as suggested by the panel and the master plan will be submitted for approval.”

Work on improvement

He said work on improving the zoo premises (as per the master plan) would be taken up after getting the green signal from the CZA.

The Karanji Lake Nature Park would also be included in the master plan. The park would have a quarantine facility in addition to a separate enclosure to house pheasants, he said.

Investors eye health, education sectors (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3396019.ece)

Rs. 2,982-crore investment expected in health; 1,174 crore in education

The health and education sectors attracted attention from investors at the Mysore Region Business Development Summit held here on Friday. A total of 658 MoUs were signed at the summit and as per the details provided by the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), an investment of Rs. 2,982.05 crore is anticipated in the health sector, while an investment of Rs. 1,174.4 crore is anticipated in the education sector.

An investment of Rs. 1,705 crore is expected in agro-tech and food processing and infrastructure, including housing, is expected to receive an investment of Rs. 1,338.9 crore.

Statistics compiled by the MCCI indicate that the investment in the health sector itself is expected to generate around 13,000 jobs, while 5,000 jobs are likely to be created in the education sector.

Hospitals springing up

Though medical infrastructure in Mysore did not keep pace with technological advancements in the field till 10 years ago, there has been a spurt in the number of hospitals in recent years.

Work is in progress on the Mysore branch of Narayana Hrudayalaya, while the super-specialty hospital of JSS Institutions is taking shape on Ooty Road. Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Research is establishing a 350-bed hospital in the city.

An ayurveda city has been proposed by JSS Institutions while a pharmaceutical park has been envisaged for Mysore.

Schools being set up

With regard to schools, Mysore is witnessing a proliferation of new institutions set up to meet the growing aspirations of the middle class.

N.N. Prahallada, retired professor of Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Mysore, told The Hindu that Mysore was witnessing a mushrooming of good schools with state-of-the-art facilities..

“The scenario with regard to schools is entirely different from what it was five years ago. Some of the new schools score well on quality and infrastructure and have adopted Information Communication Technology tools to impart education with emphasis on e-learning, ” said Prof. Prahallada.

A consequence of this development is that even existing schools are catching up, which is a positive development in the context of the city's development and growth, he added.

Critical factors

If the MoUs take concrete shape, it will act as a catalyst for the growth of Mysore as quality healthcare and quality education are two critical factors that draw investors and a skilled migrant population to a city. But this has to be backed up by good connectivity, which is taking shape by way of the track-doubling work between Mysore and Bangalore with electrification expected to be completed by December 2013.

The track-doubling work till Mandya is expected to be completed by the end of 2012 and the work between Maddur and Mandya is expected to gather pace in June this year. The Mysore airport is already in place and efforts are on to resume commercial flights.

Though Mysore draws more than 3 million visitors every year, the tourism sector managed to draw an investment of Rs. 202 crore from the hospitality sector, which is reckoned to be low.

Textiles, electronics and hardware, energy and environment and automobile are the other sectors, which investors have evinced interest in.

658 MoUs signed at summit for investments of Rs. 11,261 crore
(http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3396018.ece)
This has potential to create 55,000 jobs, the bulk of which will be in Mysore
As many as 658 entrepreneurs and investors signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to bring in investments of Rs. 11,261.48 crore, at the Mysore Region Business Development Summit held here on Friday.

This has the potential to create 55,000 jobs, the majority of which will be in Mysore.

The summit was jointly organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the Department of Industries and Commerce.

Disclosing this here on Monday, MCCI president Sudhakar Shetty told presspersons that 440 MoUs had been signed for Mysore district and the bulk of the investment — Rs. 9,836 crore — was for the district.

In other districts

As many as 45 MoUs were signed to bring in an investment of Rs. 558 crore for Mandya district, 44 MoUs with an investment of Rs. 299.49 crore for Hassan district, 48 MoUs with an investment of Rs. 373.02 crore for Chamarajanagar district, 63 MoUs with an investment of Rs. 191.66 crore for while Chikmagalur district, and 18 MoUs were signed with an anticipated investment of Rs. 3.04 crore for Kodagu district, said Mr. Shetty.

Women entrepreneurs had a sizeable presence, with 64 MoUs being signed by them, he added.

Satisfied with response

Expressing satisfaction over the response to the summit, Mr. Shetty said that the government took proactive measures by announcing a slew of infrastructure projects, including a high-speed ‘bullet train' between Mysore and Bangalore and an international convention hall for Mysore. This was expected to stand Mysore in good stead in the years to come.

Mr. Shetty said that the delegates had received an oral assurance from the government that an exemption would be made in the processing fee levied for projects cleared under the Karnataka Udyog Mitra.

Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries Murugesh R. Nirani has promised to reserve 20 per cent of the land acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Authority (KIADB) for Small Scale Industries (SSIs), according to Mr. Shetty.

Schemes showcased

The business summit helped showcase various government schemes and financial assistance available to potential entrepreneurs.

Similar business development and investors summits held in Mangalore and Hubli earlier this year met with a good response. While Hubli region is expected to receive an investment of Rs. 4,555 crore, Mangalore is expected to receive an investment of Rs. 1,800 crore.

97,000 jobs expected

“The financial commitments made during the three business development summits and establishment of industries as envisaged by the MoUs are expected to generate nearly 97,000 jobs in the State,” according to Mr. Shetty.

Review meeting

A review meeting will be held after a few months to assess the progress of implementing the projects. The MCCI has expressed confidence that the MoUs will materialise into concrete industries in two years.

Akash,
I am happy that the M-ZIM meeting was a hit. I am gladdened that finally the International quality Conventional Center is taking shape in Mysore, which is a must for any city to progress. MICE attracts lots of business men to the city and with a slew of 5 Star hotels which are coming up, this will make a killing to attract the outside businesses giving Mysore a cosmopoliton tinge. Such is the importance of an international class convention center for any city to see the progress.

I only hope that, government will act fast on this and let the private players like L&T to build, own and operate it.

Another point to note is that, there were few Electronic hardware manufacturing proposals, which if materializes, will add to the Mysore's inherent strength making it the HUB for electronic related manufacturing. This will employ lots of local people, so local economy will get the boost.:applause:

A small discontent is that other centers like Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya and others could not cash in on much in M-Zim. These cities too have ideal environment, for at least manufacturing. Companies could have been encouraged with lots of incentives to go and invest there so that, local people in those cities too would have equally benefited. Take away from M-Zim for them is pea nuts for them.

Government's lopsided policies is to blame for this.

It may be too early to say cheers, we have to wait and see how many will really materialize.

Akash,

It may be too early to say cheers, we have to wait and see how many will really materialize.

I am sure most of them would take off, education and health are something which are independent of slowdown and most of them being small and medium based investments, the time for them to start operating is minimal, also the resource requirements like land, electricity and water are not significant which can be met with ease.Unlike the mega steel plants etc.Such small and medium industries provide rather more jobs locally.

International convention was the best decision taken by the mysore legislators.Wish mysore aiport becomes a parking bay for small aircrafts which otherwise parked at BIAL.That would in turn be a blessing for mysore.

Infosys Mysore campus has one of the best convention center in India. This new international convention would be a shot in the arm for MICE,as you said it 5 star hotels are mushrooming in Mysore which would further back up MICE.
Not to forget the doubling and electrification of Mys-Blr.Can Mysore-Bangalore do something better in terms of twining/urban planning in comparision to the emerging Mumbai -Pune urban corridor? I am very positive on this.Mys-Blr has a better ecosystem to emerge as a planned urban corridor a point we score over mumbai-pune.:) but Mys-Blr state Highway is choked these days, time to 6 lane it or develop an alternative link via malvalli

Akash,
What you said is right. Double line electric railway network will ease the travel time between Bangalore and Mysore. More the easiness to travel, more is the possibility of Mysore becoming a distant locality of Bangalore. Twin cities in true sense.

Incidentally the Chennai-Bangalore Infrastructure Corridor (CBIC) , which Japanese government proposing to build, has plans to connect to Mysore too. It is them who are seeing the advantages of having Mysore is the loop as there is a huge barren land and water which can be utilized for building factories. Itseems, Japan is proposing to build self contained futuristic intelligent cities all along such corridor, be it DMIDC corridor between Mumbai and Delhi or CBIC corridor.
In this connection only, the proposal to build and operate Bullet train has emerged. Let us wait and see how far these ambitious project will really materialize on the ground.

The best routes these companies can make good profits are:

Mangalore- Mysore- Chennai
Kochi- Mysore- Hyderabad
Coimbatore- Mysore- Mumbai

On these 3 routes Mysore can be connected to 6 Destinations.

MYSORE: The air connectivity to the tourist hub could be restored by early June.

The state government is expecting two operators, SpiceJet and Indigo, to come back to it with fresh proposals this week and plans to relaunch the air services by June, district minister S A Ramdas said on Wednesday.

This follows a meeting last week at the Mysore Airport attended by representatives from air operators and other stakeholders.

Deputy commissioner P S Vastrad, who attended the meeting, had conveyed to the minister that the two operators are working out the flight plans and will come with fresh proposals.

"We expect the fresh plans to be submitted by this week and plan to relaunch the operation by early June. The air operators are working out details based on the availability of mid-sized aircraft," he told The Times of India.

The plan is to link Mysore with Hyderabad, Chennai and Goa via Bangalore and operate flights early in the morning and evening to facilitate both inbound and outbound the passengers.

MYSORE: The state government is looking to utilize services of Horticulture College to promote cultivation of Nanjangud variety banana and Mysore variety jasmine.

The government has allotted 74 acres at Yelachanahalli on the outskirts of the city to house the college, which is now operating from Thandavapur near Nanjangud. District minister S A Ramdas launched works to construct a building to house the college on Wednesday.

Referring to shrinking of Nanjangud variety banana, which has a Geographical Identification (GI) tag, Ramdas said: "The horticulture college should focus on the problem and promote its cultivation. There is also crisis when it comes to Mysore variety jasmine (Mysore Mallige) which Mysore was known for a few years back. We will promote cultivation of these and also provide market linkage. These products will also be displayed at the proposed heritage park which is planned to be developed in the city."

Dean of the college J Venkatesh asked the district administration to allot 26 acres of land it had sought. He said they had planted cashew and mango saplings in part of the 74-acre land allotted. He said the college aims to experiment in different horticultural varieties suitable for local weather conditions. Our focus will be to protect and preserve famous local varieties of banana and jasmine. We will also work for the promotion of Mysore variety betel leaves.

Ravindranath, who laid the foundation stone for the college, asked the farming community to grow horticulture crops without depending heavily on commercial crops. He said Rs 6 crore is released for the construction of the college building and hostels for boys and girls and pledged more. The horticulture university V-C S B Dandin said the college has reserved 23 per cent seats to localites. Preference will be given to children of farmers and labourers. The new facility will house classrooms, computer lab, library, administrative block and a conference hall.

Monitoring of solid waste collection to go hi-tech

The monitoring of solid waste collection in the city is set to go hi-tech with the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) deciding to make installation of electronic chip devices in all houses mandatory.

Workers engaged in door-to-door collection of waste will be given a handheld chip-reading device. This will help in tracking the number of houses that they visit.

This was disclosed by Suresh Babu, Superintending Engineer, MCC, at a workshop on Mysore Vision 2020, organised by the Alert Citizens Team (ACT) and the district administration, here on Wednesday.

Mr. Babu said that the technology had been demonstrated to contractors, and that tenders would be invited by the end of May. The project would be implemented across the city within four months.

He said that Mysore would be the first city in the country to adopt such a system to monitor solid waste collection. He said the cost of installing the chip devices and providing the reading devices had to be borne by the contractors. The chip devices would have to be installed in all 1.80-lakh housing units in the city, he said.

Presentation

Making a presentation on future plans for Mysore, Mr. Babu said that the authorities had fine-tuned a blueprint for the city with a 35-year horizon, which entailed creating infrastructure worth Rs. 2,000 crore.

‘Citizen-centric'

Shivaram Malavalli, one of the founders of ACT, and a technocrat, said that the Vision 2020 plan was conceived to promote “citizen-centric development”, which, he said, would be sustainable.

“It should not follow the chaotic development pattern of Bangalore,” he said. He stressed the need to develop Mysore into a knowledge city apart from promoting it as a tourism and heritage centre.

The workshop had technical sessions on issues related to tourism promotion, knowledge city and industrial development. Experts, including K.S. Nagapati, director, Mahajana Tourism Development Institute; Shalini Urs, director, International School for Information Management; and Ashok Rao, former Chairman of CII, Mysore, spoke.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3402876.ece

VTU-Bosch Rexroth Centre to be upgraded

The VTU-Bosch Rexroth Centre of Competence in Automation Technology in the city will be upgraded into a world-class facility to meet the exacting standards of the industry.

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Vice-Chancellor H. Maheshappa told mediapersons here on Thursday that there were plans to open a similar centre in Bangalore to upgrade the faculty, students passing out of engineering colleges, and working professionals.

In a significant departure from the norm, the centre, which trains graduates in engineering and working professionals, would also train diploma students and those passing out of ITIs, he said.

The Mysore centre was established in 2007 and has helped bridge the gap between the industry and the academia. Over 2,000 students and 600 faculty members from different technical institutions in the State have availed themselves of the facilities here, according to Dr. Maheshappa.

He said the demand for skilled professionals in the automated age was immense, but there was a shortage of trained manpower. Hence the VTU and Bosch Rexroth have joined hands to provide programmes in automation technology to meet the requirements of the industry.

He said the VTU had braced up to meet the requirements of the industry through tie-ups with the later and had introduced courses that obviated the need for industries to train freshers. Expanding the facility required greater investment from the industry.

However, he said, none of the bigwigs in the information technology sector, including a few home-grown ones, had bothered to invest in the universities to help upgrade skills of students.

Rajkumar, executive vice-president, Bosch Rexroth India, Bangalore, said the Mysore centre had laboratories in hydraulics, pneumatics, robotics and mechatronics. A laboratory for imparting training in electrical drives and controls would also be established soon.

Commenting on the demand and supply situation in the field of automation industry, Mr. Rajkumar pointed out that only 6 to 8 per cent of the nearly 5 lakh engineering graduates passing out in the country every year were deemed employable.

Peter Gorzya, head of Drive and Control Academy, Bosch Rexroth, Germany, and K.R. Prakash, Special Officer, VTU-BR Centre, Mysore, were present.

It will also train diploma students and those passing out of it: VTU Vice-Chancellor

Good rainfall in April spurs farming in Mysore district (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3414300.ece)

Sowing completed in over 1.24 lakh ha of dryland; target is 3.12 lakh ha
Good rainfall during April and intermittent showers in May have resulted in agricultural activities picking up in Mysore district, with 40 per cent of sowing being completed in dryland.

As against the target of completing sowing in 3.12 lakh hectares of dryland during the year in Mysore district, sowing has been completed in more than 1.24 lakh ha. Joint Director of Agriculture Krishnaiah told The Hindu that the rain had not only reduced the impact of dry season but had also helped agricultural activities.

‘Will meet target'

“The department is confident of meeting its target of completing sowing in 3.12 lakh ha,” said Mr. Krishnaiah.

As against the average rainfall of 64.9 mm in April, Mysore district received 112.5 mm. The rainfall was widespread across all taluks, he added.

The bulk of the crops taken up for cultivation were pulses, such as black gram and green gram, besides tobacco, jowar and cotton.

The authorities dispelled any fears of seed and fertilizer shortage during the current season.

Adequate stock

Mr. Krishnaiah said there was adequate stock of seeds, which were being made available to farmers through the Raitha Samparka Kendras and cooperative societies.

“The projected requirement of seeds for all varieties of crops in the district is 30,900 quintals. We have a stock of 22,000 quintals to meet the farmers' immediate requirements. The seed stock will be replenished as and when the existing stock begins to deplete when the sowing area increases,” Mr. Krishnaiah said.

Seeds for pulses

About 1,000 quintals of seeds for all varieties of pulses had also been distributed, he said.

The projected requirement of fertilizer is around 24,000 kg and there was adequate stock to meet the requirements of the district.

The seed availability this year — especially with regard to cotton — is in contrast to the situation last year when cotton cultivators in Mysore district took to the streets due to scarcity.

The majority of the cotton-cultivating area in the district is under genetically modified cotton and the major companies withheld seed supply in a bid to pressure the government to increase the cost of seeds.

Cotton is mainly cultivated in H.D. Kote and parts of Mysore. Hunsur and Periyapatna are the major tobacco cultivating taluks, while pulses are grown across the district.

Moderate to heavy rain

Meanwhile, the composite agro-meteorological advisory for the Southern Dry Zone and Southern Transition Zone comprising Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar issued by Meteorological Centre, Bangalore, and the Agriculture Department indicates moderate to heavy rain for Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar.

A relief

The pre-monsoon showers will help farmers in Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts, which is mainly rain-fed.

RS. 50 LAKH AID FOR DRINKING WATER PROJECT NOT UTILISED

Drought continues to haunt Mysore district

Mysore, May 13- Despite the drought situation in the district remaining grim with drinking water problems being faced by people throughout the district, the Rs. 50 lakh grant sanctioned by the government to the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) for implementation of projects to provide drinking water has gone unutilised and Nanjangud taluk stands as an epitome for the gross neglect of ZP officials.

The government, which had considered a proposal from representatives of Zilla Panchayat for grant of funds for the projects, had released the said amount on Dec. 27, 2011 for undertaking drinking water projects to the ZP.

The government had released Rs. 1027.50 lakh for implementation of emergency works at 189 rural drought-hit areas, and the same had been released for emergency works in drinking water projects depending upon the extent of the drought and the same had been released under certain conditions. The conditions included drilling of borewells in really drought-affected areas, installation of pumps, extension of pipelines and other small works.

One of the conditions was that borewells should be dug under the guidance of geologists and ensure proper utilisation and on recommendation from Task Forces formed under Presidentship of legislators, report given to the CEOs of respective ZPs.

Rs. 50 lakh for N'gud

The government had released Rs. 50 lakh for drinking water projects in about 70 drought-affected villages in Nanjangud taluk and the Mysore ZP has so far utilised only Rs. 15 lakh of the allotted amount in a period of six months which reflects the negligent attitude of the ZP officials on the needs of the common man. http://www.starofmysore.com

Akash,
Ownership of Hilton Garden INN has changed hands from DLF to one company in Kolkata and they are developing it as a pure luxury cum business hotel. If I am not wrong, the formalities are more or less completed. Construction may start by last quarter of 2012.

The site you are mentioning may be Hyatt. Is this very big site? OR you are jus guessing after seeing it in the google maps?

Can you mark it off on the map so that I can view it easily?

K.R. Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital to get new lifts

It is part of an infrastructure development project

Five new lifts will be installed at K.R. Hospital and two at Cheluvamba Hospital as part of infrastructure development. The Mysore Medical College and Research Institute has entrusted the work to the Public Works Department and tenders would be floated soon.

The State government had sanctioned a special grant of Rs. 22 crore to improve facilities at these hospitals, of which Rs. 15 crore had been released, sources told The Hindu .

Other works

“The infrastructure development project includes modernisation of operation theatres, laying of express feederline and purchase of hi-tech medical devices and equipment (worth Rs. 5 crore) for surgeries, diagnosis and treatment. At present, K.R. Hospital has four lifts and of them, three are defunct. Cheluvamba Hospital has one lift, which breaks down often. All the existing lifts will be removed,” the sources said.

Facilities

Six operation theatres at K.R. Hospital and two at Cheluvamba Hospital would be upgraded.

They would have state-of-the-art facilities and best air-conditioning systems. Revamping the water distribution network and underground drainage network in the two hospitals had also been proposed. “The MMCRI may get the remaining grant after the start of these works,” the sources said. Nearly 1,000 people are treated at K.R. Hospital and about 500 at Cheluvamba Hospital as outpatients every day.

Two railway projects in city to be commissioned soon

Two important railway infrastructure projects are likely to be commissioned in the next few months in the city.

While the warehouse at the Mysore New Goods Terminal is expected to be handed over to the Railway authorities for commissioning by June 15, civil works for the Multi-Functional Complex (MFC) at the city railway station have been completed. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Dayanand Sadhu told The Hindu that a review meeting on the progress of works on the warehouse was held here Monday.

The Railways has leased out 20,000 sq metres of land for 30 years for the warehouse being constructed by the Central Warehousing Corporation. It is expected to help Railways provide logistic solutions to the business community, industrialists and other customers for ferrying goods. The memorandum of understanding for the project was signed in October 2009. It has been constructed at a cost of Rs.8 crore.

Mr. Sadhu said a major portion of the work was over and the construction of merchants' room and labourers' room was in progress. Once commissioned, it would have a storage capacity of nearly 12,500 tonnes. Civil works for the MFC at the city railway station have been completed. The MFC was announced in the Railway Budget 2009-10. .

The project aims at providing a one-stop facility for passengers and the work was taken up by IRCON on behalf of the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Mr. Sadhu said government land could not be leased without Cabinet approval and hence the RLDA had moved a note to the government on this. “Though there has been some delay in commissioning, the civil works are complete and the MFC at Mysore is most likely to be inaugurated in a few months,” Mr. Sadhu said.

The basic lease agreement will be for 45 years and there will be a book stall, medical store, restaurant, ATM and a general store – each with a 40 sq. metre area. The MFC complex, adjacent to platform number 1, is spread over 700 sq. metres.

Warehouse at the Mysore New Goods Terminal is expected to be commissioned by June 15

Instructs officers to maintain quality, time schedule; Shows concern for safety of workers sans helmets

Mysore, May 15- Mayor M.C. Rajeshwari Puttaswamy went round the city today making a spot inspection of works taken up under the JNNURM.

Heritage zone: Going around the periphery of the Palace area which is being remodelled as Heritage Zone, Rajeshwari observed that the work was going on at a snail's pace but contended that it would pick up once the funds were released. She instructed JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu and other officers accompanying her not to compromise on quality in the process of expediting the work. She however appealed to get the zone ready before Dasara.

Town Hall: Moving on to the Town Hall, Rajeshwari inspected the ongoing renovation of the auditorium and other works at the premises. Upset at observing a few construction workers not wearing safety helmets, she instructed the concerned Engineers to strictly abide by safety norms.

Rajeshwari was shocked to see a few 'kids' employed by the contractor, but heaved a sigh of relief when it was made known that they were adult dwarfs.

Sewage farm: The Mayor later inspected the Solid Waste Treatment Plant at Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram and instructed the officers to complete the work on schedule as it was a health-related issue, needing top priority.

Deputy Mayor Mahadevappa, JNNURM engineers and others were present.

After Metro phase 2, reach Mysore 45 mins faster (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/249581/after-metro-phase-2-reach.html)

Bangalore, May 14, 2012, DHNS:
Namma Metro has some good news for regular commuters to Mysore. Once the phase 2 of the project is up and running - as part of which the East-West line will be extended upto the Kengeri satellite town - one can reach the City of Palaces 45 minutes earlier than usual.

This was disclosed by N Sivasailam, Managing Director of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), while delivering a talk on ‘Namma Metro’ at the Rotary House of Friendship on Monday.

Sivasailam said, currently, passengers to Mysore and beyond, from the heart of the City, had to pass through dense traffic. Once the Metro line to Kengeri is completed, these passengers could take KSRTC buses from Kengeri onwards.

About the progress on phase 1, Sivasailam said tunnelling work between Central College and Vidhana Soudha was expected to be completed by October.

Tunnel boring work on this stretch was coming across pure granite and at Central College, the accumulation of granite was two-metre deep, he said. Sivasailam said phase 1 is expected to get over by the end of 2013. He said, two-level station works at Majestic may take four more months to complete.

Longest tunnel in India

Sivasailam said as part of phase 2 of Namma Metro, BMRCL is set to dig the longest tunnel in the country - upto 12 km long. He said the tunnel is part of the arterial line between Gottigere and Nagawara.

Since the stretch is densely populated, Metro will go underground to save demolition of structures and land acquisition costs. This line will connect crucial zones like MG Road and Cantonment Railway station.

Volvo can do it in flat 1:45 mins to mysore from kengeri.Saarigae add another 25 mins. That makes it roughly 2 hrs from kengeri to mysore.not bad at all.

And if SWR introduces a non stop super fast train in the morning and evening, that will make these two cities so closer.

A 80 km/h averaged train can do Mysore-Bangalore in 1 hr 40 min easily.That would help a lot.

http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/bangalore-mysore-expressway-to-get-additional-pe-fund/474510/

After being in the works for nearly an year, the second round of private equity fund raise by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise Limited (NICE) which is executing the much delayed Rs 4,000 crore Bangalore-Mysore expressway, is close to being finalised.

Global private equity majors Goldman Sachs, 3i Group, Standard Chartered are among the few funds which are understood to be in discussion for this round of funding which is expected to be in the range of Rs 300-400 crore. Funds under the control of J P Morgan already has invested more than $100 million in to this project besides another private equity fund 2i Capital.

The controversial project which has been in the making for nearly 16 years, raised $100 million from a private equity fund owned by J P Morgan for the first phase of the project, involving building a total of 62 kilometres, including the 56 kms of peripheral roads linking onto the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway. The cost of the first phase is Rs 2,000 crore and the IDFC is understood to be involved in the debt part to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore besides involvement from New India Insurance. The 56-km peripheral project itself took almost a decade to build with the idea to alleviate the problem of the commercial traffic travelling on the busy NH 4 and NH 7 (linking Chennai in the south to Mumbai in the west) without crossing central Bangalore by a fast, grade-separated peripheral road.
NICE is effecting the phase I of this project through a special purpose vehicle Nandi Economic Corridor Enterprise (NECE). NICE is majorly-owned (close to 80 per cent) by B F Utilities of Kalyani Group while the rest is held a company owned by Ashok Kheny who has been spearheading the day to day activities of the project. Anil Ambani, chairman, of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, who was an early investor in this project, recently exited his stake to a fund also owned by J P Morgan.

The second and third phase of the project involving around 36 km and 60 km respectively is understood to be costing another Rs 2,000 crore. Bankers close to the deal indicate that NICE has detailed plans to raise a total of $200 million from private equity players besides the $100 million already raised through J P Morgan. Ashok Kheny, MD, NICE, confirmed to Business Standard that the second round of funding is close to being finalised, but declined to name the funds.

Funds released for Kalamandira repairs: official

The State government has released funds to take up renovation and repair of Kalamandira here, according to a press release.

The Assistant Director, Kannada and Culture, Mysore district, said the Public Works Department had been entrusted with the job. The process of inviting tenders to initiate the work was on.

The statement follows a dharna organised by artistes at the Kalamandira recently over the poor state of the building.

Funds have been granted to take up repairs of screens and seating, and install fire alarm systems, among others. However, there were no funds for the construction of a canteen on the premises, although there was provision for one, the official said.

On the demand of artistes that no programmes be organised at the venue till the renovation was completed, the note said organisers were being warned about the existing conditions before the premises were rented out.

The Department of Kannada and Culture had no power to appoint a manager for the Kalamandira, as demanded by the artistes. Employees were hired through agencies and some taken on as daily wage labourers.

Besides, the construction of a mini theatre for which Rs. 30 lakh was given by the government was under way, the release added.

From defence to civilians with love

Participation
Several events have been organised by DFRL to mark its golden jubilee, it is also keen on showing people how its research would help them in day-to-day life, finds out T R Sathish Kumar

The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) in Mysore is gradually shedding its image as a military fortress and encouraging participation of the civilian society in its activities.

The DFRL is opening its premises for the public and allows them to see the progress made in processing and packaging food. This is the golden jubilee year for the premier defence food research institute and it is time to celebrate. And, it understands that celebration has no meaning if it stays aloof.

As part of the year-long celebrations, DFRL had organised an exhibition to showcase its achievements on the occasion of national technology day last week. People from all walks of life – especially students participated in large numbers and enjoyed the organisation’s hospitality.

P M Parameshwaraiah, senior technical officer, in-charge of the national technology day celebration, said the objective behind the exhibition was to make people aware of the latest developments in food technology and to showcase the achievements of DFRL. “We also want to bring technology nearer to the people. We want to market our technology to the needy and enterprising people. We want to show how technology can be used in day-to-day life, economically,” he said.

He said the technology was cost-effective and also simple. “Entrepreneurs can borrow technology and sell their products to us or market it privately. If they have any problem, they can get back to us anytime. We are always there to help them,” he said.

Parameshwaraiah said the retort process technology, which is used in ready to eat food, has been shared with 59 companies over the past 30 years. Some of them have been successful in capturing the market. “DFRL is also concerned about conservation of nature and hence has synthesised bio-degradable packaging materials,” he added.

Senior scientific assistant Sunil Kumar said the research of DFRL in developing various test kits related to food and detection of a few infections was incredible. “The fungicide, pesticide detection kit helps find out if food is contaminated or not, whether food is toxic or not. It also helps detect if the pesticides used by farmers during cultivation for a crop is within permissible limits,” he said.

He said the aloe vera low calorie juice developed by him showed good results on diabetic and hypertension patients. He said, after consumption of 200 ml of the juice everyday, for three months, there was considerable improvement in the health of people. “Although the juice has been developed for the use of defence personnel suffering due to ailments, the same can be consumed by civilians if private entrepreneurs take up production and market the product, he added.

He said he was an expert in developing several products from seabuckthorn, a type of fruit grown in Leh, Ladak and Jammu and Kashmir. “The fruit has several proven benefits like healing effects, so if the products are manufactured by industries, it will help the people a lot,” he hoped.

Any updates on DFRL second campus coming up in yelwala?

Mysore, May 21- A team of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) officials led by MCC Zone 9 Asst. Commissioner Mahesh accompanied by Dhanush squad, demolished an illegally built bus shelter at Nazarbad Circle in city yesterday night.

When asked as to who had built the bus shelter and why was it being demolished, it was found that advertisement contractor Prashanth had built the same and had failed to produce the permission letter, said Mahesh.

He added that a similar bus shelter which had been built by Prashanth besides the compound of Mysore Zoo had also been demolished.

Stating that he came to know about the illegal bus shelters only through a report published in Star of Mysore on May 19, Mahesh clarified that though the area came under Zone 7, he had undertaken the demolition work as the Zone 7 Asst. Commissioner was on leave.

Even if the MCC had given permission for construction of such shelters, the contractor should undertake the work after bringing it to the notice of the Asst. Commissioner, he said and alleged that Prashanth had violated set norms which clearly states that the shelters should be built after inspection and permission by Traffic Police ACP.

Contractor clarifies

Meanwhile, contractor Prashanth said that the MCC on Feb. 21, 2012, had per-mitted him to build 15 bus shelters in city to implement ITS and he had already built nine bus shelters at various locations including Kuvem-punagar Complex, Kalyanagiri RTO, T.K.Layout and Siddartha Layout.

He added that the bus shelter was built after due inspection by KSRTC Divisional Traffic Controller M.N.Srinivas and AEE Kumar.

Stating that his aim was to promote public interest and products, he asked as to how anyone can object to it saying the shelter is located in front of their house? He also clarified that he had consulted MCC Commissioner regarding the issue.

Prashanth further said that he would lodge a complaint with the Police against the Asst. Commissioner for demolishing the shelter built at Shanthaveri Gopalagowda Circle in Nazarbad despite having prior permission from the MCC.

Principal secretary (rural development and panchayat raj) Amita Prasad said the proposal to set up drinking water engineering wing is with the government and is likely to be okayed. Interacting with ZP CEOs from eight districts in Mysore division during a review meeting, the secretary said the proposed unit will focus and manage the drinking water needs in rural areas.

This came in response to a request by the CEOs, who specified lack of dedicated engineers to attend to water problems in villages. There are various problems attached to multi-village drinking water scheme, which are affecting the delivery of service. This can be effectively tackled if there is a dedicated team, they told the secretary.

"The property management system is being implemented at gram panchayat level to create database of properties created under various schemes," she stated. This will help in keeping track of the properties, which will eventually cut down corruption by denying the scope to spend for works which are through.

The secretary reviewed the performance of the works taken up by eight ZPs in the region, a first such initiative to review works at the divisional level. She told the meeting that government has spent more than 35% of the funds compared to last season to attend to the drinking water needs of the villagers this summer.

MCC NETS ADDITIONAL RS. 13 CRORE PROPERTY TAX

Mysore, May 21- The Mysore City Corporation (MCC), which had embarked on a massive property tax collection drive by offering various discounts to those who paid taxes in advance, has succeeded in its efforts by collecting Rs. 13 crore additional property tax, thus reviving its financial status.

MCC, which had set the target for collection of property tax at Rs.70 crore for the year 2011-12, had collected Rs. 63 crore by the end of April from 1,68,831 of the 1,73, 851 property holders in city.

During April alone, Rs. 23 crore had been collected. The civic body had collected only Rs. 50 crore last year.

MCC in-Charge Revenue Officer A. V. Sudha has urged property owners to pay their taxes before June. The civic body had provided 5% rebate for those who paid their taxes before the end of April besides exempting those who paid their taxes before the end of June from penalty and imposed a 2% penalty on those paying taxes from July 1.

The Zone-wise break-up of tax collection is as follows:

Zone-1: Rs. 4.74 crore from 11,361 tax payers

Zone-2:Rs. 6.75 crore from 27,131 tax payers

Zone-3: Rs. 11.50 crore from 27,061 tax payers

Zone-4:Rs. 6.62 crore from 13,432 tax payers

Zone-5: Rs. 3.63 crore from 17, 318 tax payers

Zone-6:Rs. 14.28 crore from 11,578 tax payers

Zone-7:Rs. 4.70 crore from 11,722 tax payers

Zone-8: Rs. 3.63 crore from 22,608 tax payers

Zone-9:Rs. 7.02 crore from 26,518 tax payers

Kudos to Sudha

The Acting MCC Revenue Officer A.V. Sudha is presently discharging duties of three posts in the civic body which is devoid of the services of a regular Revenue Officer and Council Secretary besides her designated duty as the Planning Officer.

The post of Revenue Officer is lying vacant in the civic body following the transfer of S.N. Balachandra so also is the post of Council Secretary which has been vacant following the transfer of Gayathri.

It is commendable that Sudha, despite the huge burden of managing the three posts, has succeeded in achieving the target of collecting property taxes much to the relief of the MCC which faced financial problems.

Please develop footpaths with that money

Mysore City Corporation survey to remove unscientific bus shelters

MYSORE: Following an uproar over unscientific bus shelters in the Mysore City Corporation in early March, civic body officials decided to set up a committee to inspect them. With the committee yet to take its first steps, the laxity of officials is giving room for unlawful activities.

Recently, a bus shelter on Vasantha Mahal Road near Nazarbad police station was replaced overnight. An old shelter was removed and a new shelter put up before dawn, flouting rules and regulations.

Petrol and Diesel Dealers' Association president S K Dinesh said the shelter, adjoining his house compound on Vasantha Mahal Road, was removed overnight and people who did it allegedly threatened their housekeeper Sathyanarayan when he asked them what they were up to. Sathyanarayana had intervened when the work was in the finishing stage around 4am Friday.

"What was the need to install the shelter at that hour?" was Dinesh's query.

Later, he registered a complaint with Nazarbad police. The shelter was removed the next day as it was not in accordance with legal requirements. Dinesh says he's not against putting up a shelter. "The rule is clear that bus bays should be created before shelters are put up. Here, the violation was evident and the shelter covered the footpath. The officials are silent about it," he added.

MCC executive engineer C Krishna Bhovi told TOI some agencies are putting up shelters at places which are not identified by the civic body. One such shelter is on JLB Road near Mayura Palace. MCC will soon do a survey to identify unscientific bus shelters and remove them. Bhovi said they're verifying records to get details of agencies which have been given permission to put up shelters. The official claimed the cost for installing shelters is borne by advertising agencies as per an agreement, but the civic body gets the ad revenue. It will investigate if some agencies have misused the arrangement.

Bhovi said the city police commissioner has given them a list of unscientific shelters. A meeting of all nine zonal assistant commissioners will discuss the issue. Mayor Rajeshwari Puttaswamy said she'll initiate steps to remove unscientific shelters.

Puravankara's Mysore foray

Q: Just wanted an update with regards to your affordable housing project. We understand that volumes were lower in FY12 because of delay in approvals with regards to your affordable housing project. Can you give us an update on that and what sort of guidance do you have for FY13 on the volume front?
A: You are right. Our performance in Provident was hinged, basically, the way we planned our business for the three year entity. One of our larger projects which is going to be of 6 million square feet has taken quite some of time in terms of getting approval.
In the premium affordable range for Provident itself, we are going to enter new cities like Coimbatore. We are looking at Mangalore and Mysore in this fiscal along with that big launch that we were waiting for, which should happen maybe in a month's time from now. From a guidance perspective, we are targeting to sell 3 million square feet this fiscal.

Mayor clarifies on water tariff

MYSORE: Here is a good news to water consumers. They can continue to pay water bill at old rates.
Mayor M C Rajeshwari on Thursday told reporters that consumers need not worry about the revised water tariff, and that they can continue to pay the bill at the existing rates till further notice. Even corporation commissioner K S Raykar said they will allow people to pay water charges at the same rate.

Water tariff was revised from May 1, and the consumers were supposed to pay as per the revised rates in early June.
Rajeshwari said the issue came up in the council meeting after the government ordered to revise the tariff in urban local bodies across Karnataka. The council, however, didn't approve of it. She justified the decision, saying that water revenue target was increased in the budget keeping in view move to regularize all unauthorized connections. They expect regularization of connections to help in meeting the target, "and not the increased tariff".

"It is the government which has revised the tariff, and not the corporation. Even the slab rates were fixed by the government and the council doesn't have any role in the revision of water tariff," the mayor clarified, giving a copy of the government order.
Corporators P Devaraj, Ayub Khan and B L Byrappa, who were present, accused district minister S A Ramdas of misleading the public, saying that the tariff was fixed by the council because the Congress, in alliance with JD(S), is ruling the civic body.

The mayor said the issue will be discussed in the next council meeting, that is after the lapse of model code of conduct imposed till June 16 in the wake of elections to south teachers' constituency. The council will pass a resolution seeking the government to reduce the revised tariff.

When contacted, Raykar said district minister Ramdas has sent a letter to him, asking to revise the tariff and the same has been sent to the mayor. "Being a government representative, I'm bound to implement its orders," he said. To a query, Raykar claimed the corporation will not take any decisions like disconnecting lines if people do not pay the bill as per the revised rates. However, he stated they will accept water fee even if consumers pay at the old rates.

Additionally, Srinagar, Goa, Nasik, Guwahati, Raipur, Ranchi, Bhubaneshwar, Puri, Vishakapatnam, Vadodara, Surat, Gwalior, Mysore, Patna, Jamshedpur, Madurai, Puducherry, Lucknow and Amritsar.” These will be full service hotels and will offer 24x7 services, a range of food and beverage outlets including a 24x7 coffee shop, recreational bar, specialty restaurants, business facilities including WiFi, meeting rooms and recreational facilities including fitness centre, swimming pool and health spas.

APG manages about 299 billion Euros ($393 billion) on behalf of Dutch pension funds. Fleur Hotels will invest over Rs 2,000 crore to develop and own 4,500 rooms by end of 2016. It holds 47 per cent shareholding in the joint venture-Fleur Hotels, while Lemon Tree holds the balance 53 per cent. APG’s combined investment in the joint venture and Lemon Tree Hotels is Rs 650 crore.

“The hotel industry in India is not comprehensively segmented yet and is in the process of evolution. The non-five star/deluxe market is now seeing a number of brands entering the space and is getting further segmented into upper upscale, upscale, midscale and budget/economy. We see significant unmet demand in the upscale and upper upscale segment and supply being added in these segments will lead growth for the entire hotel industry. On completion of these proposed hotels, Lemon Tree will be a dominant player in the mid-market hotel segment,” added Nandi. Global private equity group Warburg Pincus also has a 25 per cent shareholding in the company, but Nandi informed that Warburg Pincus will continue to be invested in Lemon Tree.

Mysoreans upset with 'lack' of Dasara preparations (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysoreans-upset-with-lack-of-Dasara-preparations/articleshow/13504311.cms)

MYSORE: Every year, the government claims that it will begin Dasara preparations well in advance, maybe in the summer itself. The summer is coming to end, but the authorities are yet to begin the preparations. The government is yet to constitute high-power committee empowered to look after Dasara preparations and festivities.

Though government and officials claim to have made a beginning, traders, businessmen, philanthropists and people refuse to accept their word. People feel delayed preparations make the festival only an annual formality. According to them, the festivity, being monotonous, fail to attract tourists on a large scale. "The failure to hardsell the event will only end up wasting public money," they feel.

"It's time to begin the preparations for Dasara celebrations. But the authorities seem to be in deep slumber in this regard," said N Raghavan, a philanthropist. According to him, civic works like putting up infrastructure, working out the contents of the events, and selection of artistes require time. "It has become a habit for the authorities to postpone road repairs and city-beautification works, citing rainy season as the reason," he said, charging the authorities with failing to tap the tourist potential of the festival.

Another city-based businessman S Dandapani said the authorities' alleged failure to complete the Raja Marga (procession route), which started two years ago, itself shows the lack of seriousness on their part. "The authorities never plan the events scientifically," he said, adding that government and the authorities waste public money in the name of Nada Habba.

However, MCC commissioner K S Raiker denied that the administration is sleeping over the matter. "We have already begun Dasara preparations by identifying and finalizing the estimates of civil works," he said, claiming that Raja Marga will be completed in the next two months. "Even asphalting of major roads in the core area of the city, and Palace has been complete. Only minor repair works will be taken up in the surrounding areas," he added.

Meanwhile, the government is planning to constitute a special authority exclusively to look after Dasara celebrations. Disclosing this to TOI, district minister A S Ramdas said: "In principle, the chief minister has agreed to the proposal. A final decision on this count will be taken in a day or two. Most probably, the proposal will get the cabinet nod in next couple of days."

According to the minister, the authority will henceforth look after the preparations, and "there is no question of constituting a high-power committee". However, sub-committees will be constituted by the authority itself, he added. "The constitution of the committee is delayed for this reason," he said, adding that authority will be headed by a senior official.

Proposed library at People's Park opposed

Environmentally concerned citizens here have opposed the plans of constructing a public library at the People's Park here.

They will assemble at thepark here on Sunday to register their opposition to the move.

The Mysore Grahakara Parishat said in a release the government had recently laid the foundation stone for a public library at People's Park although the use of a park for non-park uses was prohibited under the Karnataka Parks, Play Fields and Open Spaces Act, 1985.

When a similar project was undertaken in 2000, the MGP filed a writ petition before the High Court and the project was dropped.

“Then there were plans to convert the same park into a private bus-stand, but widespread public protests stopped it,” B.V. Shenoy of MGP said in the release.http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3461488.ece

WILL KARANJI LAKE AQUARIUM BECOME A REALITY BEFORE THIS DASARA?

Revised plan for Community Park * 2-year wait for Court order
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32323&type=news
Mysore, May 28 - Even after a lapse of good four years, the MCC dream project of developing an aquarium at Karanji Lake on the lines of the one at Hussaini Sagar in Hyderabad still remains a distant dream besides there being no possibility of the completion of works before this year's Dasara celebrations.

The project of linking Karanji Lake with the Zoo to boost tourism, which had remained in coma for over two years, has now been taken up on a war-footing and the citizens are excited over the possibility of the project getting completed before this Dasara and emerge a 'star attraction' for tourists.

About the project: Construction of a Community Park and setting up of a 40 feet long aquarium spread over an area of 500 meters under CM's Rs. 100 crore grant. A complex on 1,725 meters and a 17-meter bridge for which the works are in progress now.

The work on the Rs. 4.98 crore project was launched on Oct.26, 2009. The work on construction of ticket counters at the complex has been completed and the officials are now gearing up to ensure completion of remaining works, including the bridge, in a month's time.

Glass House: With the works on the first phase having been completed, the work on the second phase is pending. The work is estimated to cost Rs. 3.25 crore and the amount is yet to be released. All other works could be completed on release of required funds by July.

Meanwhile, the work of fixing glass panes and release of fishes are being done by contractor S. Srinivasa Raju of Bangalore, who has been instructed to complete the works expeditiously.

Community Park: The work on the construction of the proposed project of a community park on the bund of Karanji Lake is pending. Previously, the stretch of the road had been closed for vehicular traffic and the plan has since been changed with the idea to broaden the area of the Park from Rana Pratap Circle to the area where Circus tents are pitched. However, the creation of a lake view-point and the project of installing statues of the Maharajas have been shelved.

A proposal for release of Rs. 3.25 crore for the same has been sent to the Government and the project may be through if funds are released before this Dasara.

Why the delay?

The major cause for the delay in these works is the irresponsible decisions taken by the MCC authorities who blundered at the planning stage itself.

It was proposed to close the Karanji Lake Road for construction of a park but the project hit a roadblock as several voluntary organisations opposed the closure of the stretch which had affected the entrance to the Anjaneya Swamy Temple nearby and the court took two long years to pronounce the order that the road should not be closed.

Following this, the works under revised plans are to be taken up for completion before July end and by that time, all construction works will be completed following which the work on installing glass panes for the aquarium will be taken up.

MCC DEMOLISHES 6 ILLEGAL HOUSES

Mysore, May 29- In its continued tirade against illegal constructions, a team of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) officials, accompanied by JCB and Dhanush Squad, this morning demolished six houses illegally built at PD Block of Kesare II Stage in city.

It is reported that the six houses were demolished as builders of these illegal houses had failed to comply with the MCC notice given a month ago to vacate the premises.

MCC Zone-5 Zonal officer and his staff took part in the demolition operation.

In another incident, MCC officials led by Zone-8 Assistant Commissioner Parvathi demolished three illegally built houses at OD Block in Subashnagar besides demolishing two huts which had been built below a high tension wire. N.R. Police provided security for the demolition operation.

10 houses razed yesterday

It may mentioned that the district administration yesterday had razed ten illegal houses built in the land coming under Metagalli Survey Nos. 155/1 and 159/1, at Hebbal's Byraveshwaranagar in the city.

The Mysore Taluk Tahasildar had earlier served notice for evacuating houses built unauthorisedly on government land. But despite the notice, the house owners failed to evacuate, following which the district administration demolished the 10 unauthorised houses.

The demolition operation was led by Tahasildar B.S. Manjunathswamy and other officials. Metagalli Police provided tight security.

MCC plans to burn midnight oil the solar way

Implementation of solar city project to begin in June

Work on the ambitious solar city project approved by the central government will start rolling out in June, said Mysore City Corporation (MCC) commissioner K S Raykar.

He made the announcement at a workshop on renewable energy usage and proper utilisation of LPG gas in association with Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) and Institution of Engineers (IoE) here on Tuesday.

The city was among the 10 in the country chosen as model solar cities by the central government. Due to the selection, Mysore would receive 50 per cent grants to implement the project.

Raykar said MCC had submitted a proposal to the central government indicating that the urban local body would be able to reduce 10 per cent of consumption in the next five years from non-renewable energy sources including fuels and electricity.

Following this, the government has approved Rs 1,612 crore for implementing the projects, which would cut down on non-renewable sources of energy. At the same time, he said it is essential that the Amba Vilas Palace with more than one lakh bulbs should be completely run on solar. This would ensure that the lights of the palace could be turned on each day instead of just on Saturday and Sunday. While plans are on to ensure that steps to Chamundi Hill are completely run on solar lights, cow dung at Pinjrapole, which offers shelter to 3,600 cattle, could be used to provide gas for cooking. Even households can contribute by using kitchen waste to gas converters, which would provide gas for at least two hours. Such projects would ease the burden on households while at the same time reduce dependency on non-renewable energy sources.

Observing that Karnataka was a power scarce state, Raykar stressed on the need for women to help in popularising the use of solar and other renewable energy sources. With the MCC offering subsidy of up to 30 per cent

Mayor M C Rajeshwari on a whirlwind visit inaugurated the programme and left immediately. KREDL project engineer Dinesh Kumar D K, IoE chairman A S Satish and Cesc director (technical) Bhagyanaik were present.

Pourakarmika colony to light up

Raykar mentioned that MCC is implementing a project to completely provide energy to a Pourakarmika Colony using renewable energy sources.

The scheme taken up under Rajeev Awaas Yojana would connect the electricity generated by solar to the power grid.

Excess supply provided to the power grid would be paid for by Cesc.

It would act as an additional income generator for the residents. Gujarat which has already implemented a similar project is offering residents Rs 15 per unit of electricity generated. Cesc at present is offering Rs 5.80 per unit, he added.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/253086/mcc-plans-burn-midnight-oil.html

MCC looks up to illuminate palace on all days of week

MYSORE: Mysore City Corporation is looking to tap solar power in a big way. If it has its way, the Mysore Palace will be illuminated using solar power, while other tourist spots will switch over to eco-friendly
energy sources.
The civic body, which is the nodal agency for the implementation of ambitious JnNURM projects, has approached the Centre with a proposal to utilise solar energy to illuminate the palace.

It also plans to set up a solar power grid at a site where houses for economically poor are under construction and plans to sell additional energy to power utilities. MCC commissioner K S Raykar on Tuesday said the Centre has pledged financial assistance to the city, which is marked as Solar City. According to him, assistance to the tune of Rs 16,012 crore will flow into the city over the next five years, and the people and agencies, which switch to use solar energy, will get help.

MCC is starting with its properties by switching over to solar energy at its headquarters and nine zonal offices. "They will be replicated at some of the vintage spots which are now dependent on hydro or thermal power," Raykar, an expert in urban management, said at a workshop on renewable energy hosted by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL).

Ahead of implementing projects under the Solar City, KREDL has opened its Mysore office at Devaraja Market and spreading awareness about its mission. Mayor Rajeshwari Puttaswamy inaugurated the meet. Raykar said the proposal to generate solar power to illuminate the palace is with the Union government and in case it is approved, the palace can be illuminated on all days of the week. Now, the palace is illuminated on weekends, during 10-days Dasara festivities, and on national holidays. The mandate of Solar City project is to adapt to eco-friendly energy source.

Referring to Gujarat where 640 MW of solar power is generated, he said: "In all, 77 houses funded by the Centre are under construction in the city, which will have mechanism to generate solar power. The energy produced will be pooled in a grid, and the additional power is planned to be sold and the money will be passed on to the owner of the property," he stated.

As part of strategy for optimal use of renewable energy sources, MCC is planning to set up mini-biogas plants at some 2,000 houses wherein biodegradable waste will be used for energy generation. "We are also supplying biodegradable waste generated daily at the main markets to Pinjarapole Society and using the cow dung to generate power," Raykar added.

Friends, this is just the old story but trying to revisit it. I see a huge potential for Mysore to transform into a serious BT Hub in Neutri/Netraceutical and phytopharmaceutical space.
We will see a lot of activity in this space in the coming months and with JSS Institute being the implementing agency known for their professionalism in whatever they do, we can be all the more optimistic about the future of this project and that of Mysore turning into a knowledge HUB for IT/ BT industries.

PS:- It would be fantastic if any one can visit the place, take snaps of this important project and upload a few of them here. Itseems place is near Varuna. I do not know where exactly it is located

BT park will make city a research hub
Preethi Nagaraj, Mysore, Nov 6, DHNS:
New vistas
After a long lull, the city seems to be whipping up a good storm in the race to progress in the recent years after some of the IT biggies set up world class campuses here.
A biotechnology park (BT Park) par excellence will be set up under Public Private Partnership few kilometers away from the city at Varuna.
JSS Institution has bagged the project to set up Neutri/Netraceutical and phytopharmaceutical (N2P2) park around the city. Anticipation is that the infrastructure related works would be completed in six months time.

The facility, which would be located across 51.5 acre would have an incubator, a research facility which can be used by other players in the industry to carry out their works, on rent, and other neccessary amenities.

JSS Seer Shivaratri Deshikendra as the guiding force, the project wil have experts such as former CFTRI director Dr V Prakash -- currently Professor Emeritus CSIR at JSS Mahavidyapeetha, along with JSS University Vice Chancellor Dr V Suresh spearheading the project, joined by Director Research Dr Balasubramaniam and
Nagannachar, the project got the nod recently.
Estimated to cost Rs 103.27 cr, the project will be partly funded by the state government.

Boost to industry

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dr V Suresh said this park will provide boost to the growth of the related industry by over 10 - 12 per cent. “International players are also interested in this project. Herbal farming and neutraceutical farming will arrive big time through this project.

This will also put Mysore on par with serious players in the business arena,” he added.

Adhereing to the parameters set by Karnataka Vision Group for Bio Technolgy, which is headed by Biocon head Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr Balasubramaniam, one of the key persons on board, said:

BT hub
“The park will turn into a BT hub with the unit concentrating on exploring the bioresources available in western ghats plant-based medicines, synthetic chemicals etc. Private players in the sector are interested in knowing more about neutroceuticals which are widely used in health drinks these days, to add energy efficiency into the combinations.”

This apart, the unit will also look at employing cutting-edge technology to preserve nutrients in foods, new-age packaging methods and increasing shelf-life of food and related materials, in order to meet the food challenges of future.

With home-grown expertise available in abundance from Pharmacy college run by the institute in Ooty, the park also aims at opening new vistas for experts in the area. The project will be completely operational in two years’ time, heralding new wave of research in BT.

Builders’ dream for growth

With Bangalore’s haphazard, unplanned growth staring us in the face, the concern of the Mysoreans is to see that it does not go the Bangalore way. It is heartening to see that one of the biggest stakeholders in the city, the builders, are also thinking of the heritage city first and then the selling of the apartments, finds out N Niranjan Nikam, even as the four-day My Realty 2012, is on at the Maharaja’s College grounds.

M y friend Sarojini was in Bangalore to visit her daughter recently. She went to a shop on Avenue Road and the shopkeeper, a Marwari, was pleasantly surprised the way she was talking to him. He asked her where she was from and she said Mysore. “Amma, no wonder you have so much of patience and time.

Here no one has time for a pleasant talk. Please see that you preserve Mysore and do not allow it to become another Bangalore,” was the reaction of the concerned Marwari shopkeeper.

It is that time of the year again, where the builders try to bring the buyers on a common platform to showcase the properties they have at one place and this is the seventh edition of the My Realty 2012 show on at the Maharaja’s College grounds, is a proof of this.

“The Builders Association of India, Mysore chapter and the Confederation of the Real Estate Developers of India (CREDAI) have come together, wherein; all are credible and authenticated developers, where the Credai code of conduct is strictly followed.
Here the buyer has the choice to see the different projects like the fruits in a basket,” said My Realty 2012 chairman S Prakash.

There are about 25 participants and some of the big names in the real estate field like Prestige, Shoba, Brigades, Fortune, Shriram properties from Bangalore and Mysore’s Sankalp, Premier, Pramur are participating. The financial institutions like ICICI, HDFC, Axis are also participating, Credai, Mysore president M B Nagakumar told City Herald.

Apartments

Asked how many apartments had been built till now in Mysore, Nagakumar said that there were nearly 2,000 flats built out of which 1500 had already been sold. The demand is there with a 20 per cent growth every year.

With the penchant for individual houses that a traditional Mysorean still has, is it not a challenge to change the mindset? Here the members of the organising committee including BAI Mysore chairman A V Sridhar, My Realty secretary S R Swamy, Prakash and Nagakumar are unanimous in their opinion that if Mysore has to be preserved and should not go the way of Bangalore, then the core area, the heritage part of the city has to be maintained and development has to happen in the periphery of the city.

“It is better to encourage joint ventures (JVs) with the public private partnership model where for instance a public transport like a bus can pick up 100 people from one place than to go around different parts to pick up others. Also the laying of pipes for water, cables for electricity can all be minimised with high rise buildings,” said Prakash.

What is the profile of a buyer in Mysore? In Bangalore if one visits a project site, it is the young family crowd and sometimes even a young lady with her parents visiting the mockup flat who takes a decision to purchase a flat. “Here it is slowly changing. The elderly are moving from individual houses to flats as they have realised that many issues like safety, security, availability of house maids are all taken care of,” said Sridhar.
Sea change

Just one company the TVS set up in Nanjangud industrial area nearly two decades ago made a sea change in the whole area. The ITC is coming up, Nestle is expanding and many of these companies are buying flats for their company guest houses in JP Nagar, said Swamy.

However, there are lot of concerns the builders in Mysore have which the government is promising to address and nothing much has been done so far. It is first the high taxation and the floor area ration (FAR).

A commercial space in Bangalore Jayanagar is Rs 25 per sq ft whereas in the KSRTC bus stand in Mysore it is Rs 38 per sq ft. The committee members said that it was simply because of the clear advantage in FAR, Bangalore has and unless the ratio is increased from the present 1.5 to 2 to at least 3 the problem will continue, they said.

It is sad that the government has only misplaced priorities and with the building industry being one of the largest employers if the building boom has to sustain then the government must act. “Either there should be VAT or stamp duty it cannot have both, the tax policy should be simplified, “ is the demand of the builders.

What is the going rate of the flats? It is anywhere between Rs 1,500 per sq ft in the outskirts of the city to Rs 2,500 per sq ft in JP Nagar to Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,200 in the heart of the city like Jayalakshmipuram, Vontikoppal, Lakshmipuram, said Nagakumar.

My Realty is expecting an optimistic footfall of anywhere between 25,000 to 30,000. “We have issued 10,000 passes to the clubs and our previous buyers and we hope to do a good business of at least Rs 30 crore in air condition comfort,” said Prakash and Nagakumar.

The only fervent wish of every Mysorean is that, as one of the headlines in My Realty 2012 brochure says, ‘Mysore forward gracefully.’

The Chief Minister of Karnataka directed the BDA to take over the land of the Mysore lamp and start construction of residential apartment.

According to the home ministry, the abandoned land can be utilized for revenue generation after construction of apartments in Mysore.

About 39 acres of lands are there in the location, and a luxurious apartment could generate good amount of revenue.

Government is planning to compensate the losses of the Mysore lamp with the generated revenue from the location.

WILL FLIGHTS TO CITY GET WINGS?

Mysore, May 31- District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas had assured some time ago that flights would resume operations from and to the city from June 3.

However, with the State BJP government in turmoil, it appears there is no one to take up the issue and initiate process to resume the flights to city.

It was informed that Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had held discussions with three private airlines, with the latter agreeing to fly the aircraft from first week of June.

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad too had held a round of discussion with no decision taken.

During the Mysore Zonal Investors Meet held in city recently, it was reportedly urged that flights should be resumed from city to facilitate industrialists and also to move the cargo. It was reportedly suggested to operate flights from city to Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Goa.

Airlines' demand

The private airlines were learnt to have placed a demand with the government to ensure a minimum of 25 seats on each flight and continue it for four mon-ths. They were learnt to have said that the flight network would be developed and standardised after four months utilising the potential of tourism and industrial sector. The DC was said to have held talks with Indian Airlines too regarding the issue.

However, government sources feel that the private airlines should first operate the flights without setting any pre-conditions. They also say that offering subsidy on aviation fuel was a national issue which cannot be complied by the State Government as demanded by airlines.

Minister assures

Setting aside all doubts and speculations, District Minister Ramdas continues to maintain that the government has discussed the issue of restarting air traffic with the managements of Spice Jet and Indigo and an assurance of a minimum of 20 seats for the first sour months has been given to them.

The Minister contends that only an official announcement is due from the State government for resumption of flights to Mysore.

BlackBerry phones to assist cops manage traffic better

MYSORE: Habitual traffic offenders, take note. Henceforth, you can't go scot-free for subsequent traffic violations as city traffic police are going hi-tech to crack down on offenders.

Nearly two years after their counterparts in Bangalore started using BlackBerry-assisted traffic enforcement system, Mysore cops are going in for that. Mysore will be the second city in the state to adopt a paperless system of traffic enforcement.

Traffic police officers will start using BBs in the next two weeks. This cuts manpower, reduces paperwork, stores data in centralized server. Moreover, they help police get the details of any previous offences by the violators in no time. Even, the system reduces time in serving notices to offenders and puts brake on the possible manipulation by police.

Devaraja traffic inspector Mohammed Irshad, who underwent training along with 17 other officers from the city at Bangalore Traffic Training Institute recently, told TOI that once they start using BB handsets, the vehicle owners will have to own up for their previous offences. Each violation will be recorded, and details will be stored in the server. Policemen, armed with the gadget, can get details of previous violations at their fingertips.

There is no chance for violators to go scot-free for repeat offence. Presently, police are collecting Rs 100 towards fine for helmetless driving. As there was no proper system to check whether the violator was booked earlier, police were collecting the same amount of fine even for subsequent offences. But hereafter, police will not face any such glitch as they will get to know the "history of violation" by keying in to BB handsets either the DL number or the vehicle registration number of violators.

For subsequent traffic rule violations, the fine amount will be enhanced. For helmetless driving, police can collect Rs 300 for second or third offence. Moreover, they will have a record to write the to court, seeking cancellation of the errant motorists' driving licences.

Each BB handset will have Bluetooth-enabled printers to issue notices to violators on the spot. The present system is time consuming as the officers have to write details of violation, place, and date and vehicle number on 'check report receipts' (CRR). But with the latest gadget, officers can issue receipts in less than a minute, Irshad explained.

Earlier, the offenders used to question the officers for using old CRR books printed two-three years ago to issue notices. They were at the receiving end because public were suspecting the police for using books printed in 2009/10 (the reciepts were being used to clear the stock). But there will be no such confusion henceforth.

According to Irshad, nearly 80 types of traffic violations have been stored in the gadget. They can also videograph the offence using the handset, if need be. "Violations like helmetless driving, triple riding, reckless and underage driving are rampant in Mysore," the inspector said, adding that people will see a change in traffic management.

Mysore witnesses near-total bandh

MYSORE: Mysore joined the rest of the cities in India in the nationwide protest against hike in petrol prices by shutting down businesses on Thursday. The bandh, which was near total and peaceful, inconvenienced people here.

Almost every business establishment on Devaraja Urs Road, Sayyaji Rao Road and Ashoka Road, and those in the heart of the city were shut. There was mixed response to the protest from residential extensions in northeast of the city. All cinema halls had suspended morning and matinee shows, while fuel stations remained closed. Public transport services too were suspended, following damage to buses in northern Karnataka.

There was a drop in the number of visitors to Mysore zoo, the popular tourist destination. Authorities said they received just over 1,200 visitors as against the daily average of 8,000. However, Mysore Palace's parking lot was full. The strike did not affect medical stores, milk booths, hospitals, shops and government offices. But the banks remained shut.

Meanwhile, all the 21 trains operated as per schedule from Mysore city. But passengers who came to Mysore faced difficulty in the absence of public transport.

Admirer of Mysore,

Can you name one big large scale industry that has been setup in mysore due to BJP govt's effort? Any industrial estate developed during BJP's regime? All nanjangud, thandya, kadkola, habbal owe a lot to Congress.

Yet some guys jump in here to support the most corrupt bparty.

Akash,
BJP has not done anything different than what their predecessors (JDS+ BJP, JDS+ Congress) did. That is just announce the projects during and KUM meeting and go to sleep.

Project realization is not even 10 percent. If you go to any of the Industrial estates in Mysore, though the estate seem having lot of open land, but when you enquire, you find out that all have been bought quite along ago using benami names. Neither land is available for serious Industrialist nor they themselves develop it.

As a result, many projects like IBM, TCS, Akzo Nobel, Luxe Hotels and few more IT park development projects by big developers are yet to take off though project approval signing was done more than 10 years back.

There is no concentrated effort by these bureaucrats to see the projects are realized. They are not interested as they got their share of bribe :bash:

So. moral of the story is that, It is not party that can develop any city, but the Individual leaders. Only during Krishna was CM, there was substantial infrastructure progress in Bangalore and Mysore.

If congress wins with majority (which is unlikely) and if Krishna becomes CM, may be, we can see some serious developments.
But flip side is that, he may neglect Northern part of Ka as he is "Mandyada mannina Maga"

But flip side is that, he may neglect Northern part of Ka as he is "Mandyada mannina Maga"

One cannot forget North karnataka these days, which is resource rich, limestone is wooing cement industries and ofcourse the iron ore is caught up in a mess as of now, else that would attract more steel mills,Many high grade steel mills are coming up around bellary especially those of JSW.Sugarcane produce is on the rise inviting more sugar industries in belgaum. What North KA needs is infra boost which will pull up the development activities.

In general drought and floods have demoralised the farming fratenity with absolute zero support. At the times of floods these bjp monkeys played musical chair and during drought they did the same,JDs or congress need not campaign next elections they will come on their own. :-)

Agreed, this was reported earlier in newspapers, but now they have removed couple of tiles around the trees.

The best way is to develop spaces around trees, just like the one being developed on Sarawathipura 14th main.

New passenger train may start services by July end

Chamarajanagar, June 5, 2012, DHNS:
Despite several long-pending demands of the people of the district remaining unfulfilled, the introduction of a new passenger train to the district headquarters from Mysore is a respite.

The train, announced in the last Railway budget, is expected to start chugging by July end.

The residents of Chamarajanagar and surrounding areas have been demanding extension of Shimoga-Mysore and Dharwad-Mysore trains up to Chamarajanagar — for a long time.

The demand for laying of a railway line from Chamarajanagar to Mettupalyam is the oldest of all the demands. Apart from that there has been a demand for doubling of the Chamarajanagar-Mysore track. However, the district has not got any sops in any of the railway budgets so far. The mention of the new train this time has come as a big relief.

Several persons commute to Mysore from Chamarajanagar and surrounding areas for work and education. Most of them belong to the economically backward classes. Over 3,800 persons have availed Izzat railway pass under the Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha constituency. The commuters had been pressing for new trains and additional coaches for existing trains.

The commuters have also been complaining that due to shortage of staff in the railway station they were facing hardships. Due to shortage of staff, only one ticket counter operates, whereas the queue is usually long. So, tickets are being issued till the last minute before the train departs.

Passengers have a hard time catching the train. It is even more difficult if the train is on the second platform. Even MP Dhruvanarayan has written a letter to the south-western railway, urging it to post adequate staff at the railway station.

The MP has got a reply that necessary staff would be posted before the new train starts operating.

Ropeway, four-lane road at Chamundi Hills opposed

The proposed four-lane road and ropeway to the Chamundi Hills have drawn opposition from environment and social activists here who are arguing that the two projects could be detrimental to the ecology of the hills.

“A proposal to build a ropeway on the western end facing the city was in the news for nearly a decade. Recently, the Minister in-charge of Mysore district announced that a four-lane road will be built from the foothills to the top. Both the projects will be detrimental for the environment,” said R. Chandra Prakash of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat.

Traditional steps

Even today, thousands of devotees, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays, climb 1,000-plus steps as early as 4 a.m. These steps symbolise the heritage of the hills. These devotees don't look for another way to reach the hill temple. Some devotees travel to the temple by road, Mr. Prakash said in a press release.

“If this is the case, whom will the ropeway serve,” he asked. Tourists come either in a public bus or by their own transport; so why would they waste time and money on the ropeway, he questioned.

Plenty of alternatives

Mr. Prakash also sought to know the reason for planning a four-lane road. According to him, there were several roads going down from the hills on either side of it.

In any case, the high density of traffic to Chamundeshwari temple during peak season cannot justify road widening by removing the trees and increasing risk of landslips, according to the release.

Projects could be detrimental to the ecology of the hills, say environment

and social activistshttp://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article3499645.ece

tirupati has 2 roads

from C hill top to view point you dont have medium/big trees

moreover i think they can't do 4lane it needs big space only 3lane can be done with a divider
