General engineering cluster set to come up

MoU signed by Mysore Industries Association and State government during GIM

Bright future:The general engineering cluster is expected to directly generate jobs for 1,000 skilled workers and indirectly provide employment to thousands of people.— PHOTO: M.A. SRIRAM
A general engineering cluster is set to come up in the industrial area on the outskirts of the city.

The cluster will be spread over 55 acres at either Kadakola or Koorgalli and will house at least 50 general engineering, and fabrication units.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect has been signed by the Mysore Industries Association and the Government of Karnataka, and the concept envisages an investment of Rs. 128 crore.

Suresh Kumar Jain, general secretary, MIA, told The Hindu that the MoU was signed during the Global Investors Meet in Bangalore.

He said around 50 micro and small-scale engineering units with common facilities would be developed by the MIA and that the concept might become a reality by 2015.

Underlining the importance of an engineering cluster, Mr. Jain said Mysore was slowly emerging as a hub for machinery manufacturing industries.

Some of the major industries in the city include Rane Madras, Triveni Engineering, Automotive Axles, BEML and TVS.

The development of an engineering cluster would help medium and large industries as they would no longer have to look towards Bangalore or Coimbatore for sub-contracting and so on.

Testing unit

“A unique aspect of the general engineering cluster is the plan to have a full-fledged testing unit which will help the local units,” he added.

The spin-off benefit of the engineering cluster is that it can lead to the strengthening of ancillary engineering units in Mysore and give a fillip to overall industrial development, according to Mr. Jain.

The common facilities for the cluster will include dedicated water and power supply, marketing and media conferencing hall, business development centre, apart from the testing unit.

The Centre's contribution of Rs. 15 crore would be a one-time grant and the Karnataka Council for Technology Upgradation was also promoting the concept, said Mr. Jain.

Land acquisition

Though land acquisition was a major issue around Mysore, Mr. Jain said that around 250 acres of land was still available as some entrepreneurs who were allotted land, had surrendered them. “There is scope for establishing the cluster either at Koorgalli or Kadakola, but the MIA would prefer the new engineering cluster to be established at Koorgalli in view of its proximity to the city and established industries,” he said.

The proposal to establish a general engineering cluster in Mysore is reckoned to be one of the major initiatives taken up for industrial promotion in the city and has been inspired by a similar cluster in Belgaum.

“We visited the forging cluster in Belgaum and wished to replicate the model for general engineering,” said Mr. Jain.

The cluster is expected to directly generate jobs for 1,000 skilled workers and indirectly provide employment to thousands of people.

Local industrialists who participated in the GIM are promoting the city to lure investors, and MIA members say the response towards Mysore has been positive so far.

Akash,
This is the kind cluster approach for MSMEs which is really required for manufacturing to get strengthened in any city.

SMEs form the backbone of any country. Though Germany, Japan, Italy and others are known for their famous big brands like Siemens, Sony, Fiat etc. But it is the SME sector which gives the real employment to whole lot of people giving the necessary punch to the overall economy.

I am sure that this venture will pass through irrespective of which government in Bangalore as it involves a small patch of land and low electricity, water requirement.
It will add magic to the manufacturing as it did to Bangalore 2 decades back. In turn it will attract major labour intensive precision industries in the coming years to Mysore.

Kudos to MIA and my wishes for the project to become success!!

Four platforms at Mysore Railway Station to be extended

The extension of four of the six platforms at the city railway station to facilitate berthing of 24-coach trains is expected to provide relief to long-distance passengers boarding from Mysore.

Introduction of 24 coach rakes would mean augmenting accommodation availability in trains so as to reduce the waiting list as each additional coach will provide berth to 72 passengers and thus reduce the waiting list considerably.

The extension of platforms 1, 2, 4 and 6 at the city station was completed in April though none of the trains originating from the city have a 24-coach rake composition at present.

However, all trains departing from Mysore are booked weeks in advance and hence there is a clamour to increase the accommodation availability by attaching additional coaches for the existing long-distance trains.

Most trains departing from Mysore at present have a rake composition of either 16 or 18 coaches except the Tipu Express which has 21 coaches. Now that the platforms have been extended, augmenting the rakes is a possibility to augment passenger accommodation.

However, sources told The Hindu that not all trains departing from Mysore can have a 24-coach composition due to technical issues. “Trains originating from Mysore and destined towards Bangalore and Hassan-Arsikere cater to a large number of small towns enroute and none of the minor stations have platforms long enough to accommodate a 24-coach rake. If trains stop at such stations, a portion of the rake would protrude beyond the platform and jeopardise the safety of passengers disembarking or trying to board the trains,” the sources added.

“In the event 24-coach rake trains are introduced, they must be made non-stop services.

The popular Mysore-Dharwad Express too will have to be made a limited stop service with halts at Harihar, Davanagere, Haveri and Rannebennur where the platforms were extended some time ago,” sources said.

On the high-density Mysore-Bangalore route, halts can be provided only at Mandya and Ramanagaram with a technical halt at Maddur while eliminating stops at other intermediate halts as at Pandavapura and Shettihalli.

The Chennai-bound Kaveri Express is an 18 coach rake departing from Mysore but five additional coaches are attached at Bangalore. But this practice may be discontinued in due course and the train is likely to run with 23 coaches from Mysore in future. “Hence the halt at Srirangapatana has been withdrawn with effect from July 1 this year as the platform is not long enough to accommodate a 23-coach rake while the station itself is flanked by two bridges,” sources added.

Hence only some of the long-distance trains originating from Mysore could be upgraded in future to have up to a maximum of 24 coaches while the rakes of other trains will be restricted to 16 to 18 coaches, said sources.

But given the increase in the number of passengers patronising the railways and the growth in the passenger traffic, long distance trains originating from Mysore could have more coaches to reduce the waiting list.

The move is expected to provide relief to

Promise to develop parks, open spaces remains on paper

Spaces meant for developing parks being vandalised in many locations

The claim that all parks and open spaces in the city would be developed has remained only on paper. The plans of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to develop and beautify more than 600 parks and gardens in the city by inviting private participation has not taken off.

The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and the MCC have been promising to develop parks and open spaces, but to no avail. Spaces meant for developing parks are being vandalised in many locations. In a brazen violation of the norms, building debris is being dumped in parks.

The Peoples' Park, which has hit the headlines in the recent days, is a case in point.

The worst case of vandalisation of parks can be seen at the twin parks, Double Park, in Lakshmipuram area.

In one of the parks, a huge water tank has been built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project, which is yet to become operational. have converted the park area into a shelter. The other park has been turned into a playground by youth who come from surrounding locations.

“Whether it is summer vacation for schools, general holidays working days , the park is always occupied by the boys and the noise emanating from the ‘playground' is nauseating. It disturbs the peace and tranquillity of the area,” says Saroj, a resident of one of the several apartments located around. Requests made by the apartments associations in the area to develop the parks have fallen on deaf ears so far, said a secretary of an apartment residents association.

The MCC tried out to rope in the support of the public in the past through the concept of community participation in park development under which the government would contribute a substantial amount of funds if citizens made the initial contribution. For example, if the citizens contributed 10 per cent, the government would contribute 90 per cent. This has not taken off. There are also a few parks maintained by the Department of Horticulture which has the competence to maintain and develop parks but their expertise has not been utilised.

The suggestions from citizen groups to develop theme-based parks such as the science park, the touch, feel and learn park for those with visual disabilities , the herbal plant park, bio-tech park, IT Park and pet-friendly park in the city are yet to come to fruition. Earmarking space for parks and gardens in the newly developed layouts in Mysore has seen the total numbers cross the 600 mark in the recent times. It is not a heartening fact to note that only a little over 120 parks have been developed by the MCC so far.

506 new firms to create 65,000 jobs

The recently concluded Global Investors' Meet (GIM) has a lot to offer to Mysore with 506 new industries being proposed in the city.

The city has four industrial areas with engineering, automobile and agriculture as the major industries. The new industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the GIM. Large scale, micro manufacturing and small industries are the frontrunners among the industries. The new industries will generate 65,000 jobs with Rs 16,328-crore investment.

"Various proposed industries include agro-tech, electronic and hardware, energy and environment, infrastructure, automobile, health tourism, textile, tourism, educational hubs, animal and husbandry and other industries including small and microfinance industries," said Sudhakar Shetty, president, Mysore chamber of commerce and industries. Speaking to TOI, Shetty added: "Most of the proposed industries belong to Mysore entrepreneurs, both large and small industries, and it will boost both industries and investors."

Service and automobile giants like TCS and Honda too have shown interest to invest in industry. However, the hitch remains with connectivity issues including air and road services. Even the chief minister has taken note of the issue, said Shetty.

"GIM will not become a success in two days unless all the MoU-signed industries emerge in Mysore. DIC and KIADB has a major role to play with its continuous follow up with MoU-signed industries" he asserted.

Shetty expressed that Mysore has an advantage as it is in the centre of the state and free from riots and communal violence.

Human resource is another advantage for investors in Mysore as there are 33,800 jobseekers, including 3,500 graudates, 2,700 ITIs and 3,730 diploma holders, he pointed.

Shetty said that no further acquiring of land would be necessary as 2,794 acres land is sufficient for the industries. Even farmers came forward to give 5,500 acres of infertile land. Small scale industries will be given more preference as they consume less land and offer lot job opportunities, he added.

Speaking about major industries emerging in Mysore, Shetty said textile, tourism, infrastructure, health and pharma sectors were given preference as they suited the region and were in demand. Health tourism, which includes yoga and other health practices, has more potential to the heritage city, he added.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/506-new-firms-to-create-65000-jobs/articleshow/14042492.cms

Poor connectivity to Mysore proves a hurdle for international tourists

Hardly 3 per cent of tourists who visit Mysore every year are from abroad

Lack of connectivity has hindered visits from international tourists to Mysore and their number has remained stagnant over the last few years.

Stakeholders point out that the tourism sector in Mysore has witnessed healthy growth in the last few years, but the boom has been driven entirely by domestic tourists. Statistics compiled by the Mysore Palace Board show that of the nearly 3 million tourists who visit the city every year, hardly 3 per cent of them are foreign tourists, and the year-on-year figures show that their numbers hover around 90,000.

While 4.95 lakh tourists visited Mysore in May 2012, the number of international tourists who visited the city during the same period was 6,072. Similarly, there were 4.5 lakh visitors in December 2011, but the number of international tourists who visited Mysore during the same period was only 9,069, according to the Mysore Palace Board. A comparison of the monthly statistics on domestic tourists to that of foreign tourists visiting the palace indicate a similar trend.

No links to Goa, Hampi

Stakeholders attribute this to the lack of connectivity, which makes reaching Mysore a cumbersome process. As Manu, the director of Skyway International Travels, explained, Mysore ought to have direct connectivity to other popular tourist destinations like Goa and Hampi, which are frequented by foreign tourists. The majority of international tourists visiting Goa make it a point to visit Hampi, which is a World Heritage site. But their onward journey to Mysore is hindered by the absence of direct connectivity.

“Our company handles a lot of chartered tourists from European countries. But most of them feel the journey to Mysore is tedious, as they have to disembark at Bangalore airport, from where it is another 5 to 6 hours of torrid travel by road,” said Mr. Manu, who rued the lack of commercial flights to and from Mysore.

South Western Railway introduced a weekly train to Goa last year, which was well-patronised and held out the promise of boosting tourism. However, after a few trips, the special service was discontinued and the same train is now being operated to Shirdi. Though stakeholders in the tourism sector have repeatedly appealed for a direct train from Mysore to Goa and Mysore to Hampi, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Mysore as a base

K.S. Nagapati, director, Mahajana Tourism Development Institute, said that apart from connectivity, the State Government should promote Mysore as a base for exploring the heritage sites of Belur, Halebid and Shravanabelagola. “Though Mysore offers everything to discerning tourists including a wildlife circuit, it has not been adequately marketed abroad,” said the director, who pointed out that the city barely received any mention at ITB Berlin, which he attended last year.

He said Karnataka should take a cue from Kerala, which had emerged as a tourist destination in its own right. But the onus was on the State government to take the initiative and create awareness about a golden India beyond the “golden triangle” of Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, which was popular among foreign tourists, he added.

‘They feel the journey to Mysore is tedious'

‘Mysore is not adequately marketed abroad'

NICE rouses B'lore-Mysore infra project on tough SC order

After nearly two years in limbo, work on the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor may begin soon. CNBC-TV18's Vineetha Athrey reports that Bharat Forge -backed NICE (Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises), which was forced to halt work literally months away from completion due to land acquisition problems, has begun hunting for funds again.

Also watch the accompanying video

A fresh round of talks has been initiated with a host of private equity firms, including Goldman Sachs, for the 164-km-long tolled expressway project.

Sources say that the target is to raise USD 500 million in two tranches - one of USD 200 million and another of USD 300 million. Of this, USD 200 million will be used to complete a 38-km expressway and two townships.

The additional USD 300 million will be used to develop a cricket stadium, exhibition centres, shopping complexes and power-and-water utilities. This renewed vigour is all thanks to the Supreme Court's recent directive to various stakeholders of the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructire Corridor, to complete the project on a fast track.

NICE is now confident that the first phase can be completed in the next three-to-four months and plans to start the second phase immediately after. Sources say NICE is busy working out a suitable valuation for the second phase of the Rs 1.75-lakh crore project and expects to close the deal within the next two months.http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/nice-rouses-blore-mysore-infra-projecttough-sc-order_716942.html

DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION TO BUILD COMPLEX AT VIJAYASHREEPURA

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad has now come out with a proposal to build a commercial complex on a 10-acre plot on Survey No. 1 in Vijayashreepura on the road between Tahasildar Office and Aishwarya Petrol Bunk adjacent to the Mysore-Hunsur Road [see pic.] thus fulfilling the ambitions of former Dy. Commissioners P. Manivannan and Harsha Gupta who had dreamt of utilising the encroached govt. land.

The complex is aimed at providing a space for many government offices which are now being run at rented premises leading to expenditure of lakhs of rupees per month as rents.

It may be recalled that the former Deputy Commissioners had acquired prime land in Vijayashreepura in Kasaba Hobli of Mysore which had been illegally used by vested interests to manufacture concrete blocks and car garages. The Deputy Commissioner had written a letter to the Assistant Commissioner on May 19 to submit a proposal for construction of a complex at the site.

On May 21st, the Assistant Commissioner had submitted a survey report by the Assistant Director of Land Records to the Tahasildar recommending proposal for construction of the complex to the DC. The preliminary inspection was conducted on May 19 and the Assistant Com-missioner had asked the Taha-sildar to prepare and present the file regarding the project to the DC. He also said that Revenue Inspectors who inspected the spot had opined that the said area was lying in the Corporation limits and was a well-developed commercial area.

There are about eight houses in the 10-acre plot where some people are said to be living, which are in a legal dispute and the remaining area is vacant. The District Administration plans to construct a complex there and a proposal has already been sent to the government for administrative and financial sanction.

Let us hope that the government takes an appropriate decision before vested interests encroach the highly valued plot. http://www.starofmysore.com

Catch a view of Mysore’s beauty from skywheel

http://www.deccanherald.com/page_images/thumb/2012/06/14/256793_thump.jpg
Mysore, Jun 13, 2012, DHNS :

The City of Palaces will soon add another feather to its cap. It will be home to the country’s first skywheel, which will come up at a cost of Rs 30 crore.

The skywheel, which is a sophisticated form of the giant wheel - consisting of air-conditioned and well-furnished cabins with seating arrangements for four people - will offer a panoramic view of the city’s places of tourist interest within a radius of 20 km.

The Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, places of tourist interest in Srirangapatna, the Brindavan Gardens in KRS, Chamundi Hills, the big Nandi, the Mysore Palace, Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens and the Karanjikere tank are among the places that will be within the visual range of the skywheel, which will be built using the most modern safety technology.

B P Manjunath, the Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) chairperson, told reporters in the city on Wednesday that the skywheel planned in Mysore - to be called ‘Mysore Eye’ - would be the third in the world, after the London Eye and Singapore Skyer.

He said the KEA’s efforts in the last three years had borne fruit and work on the project - on land measuring two acres - would begin in 15 days and completed in four months. KEA is undertaking the project, the approval for which was given at the recent Global Investors’ Meet held in Bangalore.

Innovative Studio Private Limited, which has set up the Innovative Film City in Bidadi, will construct the skywheel, he said.

While the entry fee per person will be fixed in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 600, a decision on family packages and students’ discount would be taken later, Manjunath said. He said that the skywheel will be the latest addition to the list of tourist destinations in the State’s cultural capital, which attracts lakhs of visitors every year.

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/256793/catch-view-mysores-beauty-skywheel.html

Helicopter ride will be much better for 500-600 rs. Bidadi already has a skywheel right? If this happens it would be second in India and second in Karnataka.

Cloudnine Hospitals, the Bangalore-based hospital chain focussing on maternity care, is looking to raise Rs 100 crore as part of its expansion plans. The company which has two hospitals, is looking to expand into Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad through the inorganic route. Cloudnine is a venture of Kids Clinic (Bangalore) Pvt Ltd, owned by Dr Kishore, and Scrips N Scrolls India, a company into property development and investments.

Kids Clinic Bangalore Pvt Ltd had raised Rs 45 crore in its first round of institutional funding from Matrix Partners about one year ago. The funds raised will be used for increasing its footprint in Bangalore with three new facilities and also plans to expand into other metros.

“In the metros we are looking at brownfield projects for our expansion,” said M A Rohit, Director, Cloudnine. As part of its expansion, it is also targetting tier II cities. But, in the case of the small towns, it needs greenfield projects. In Mysore, it’s in the process of setting up a greenfield project, while a third hospital is being planned in Bangalore.

Mysore eye is just 150 feet in height? Is it wrong print or these guys are going on a scaled down (tiny) version of London eye?
Because, the other 3 (London, Singapore & China) have height more than 400 feet.

FAR in Mysore far from reality?

Revised FAR will benefit Mysore
The argument in favour of a revised FAR is also to prevent the horizontal urban sprawl that is eating up agriculture land in the hinterland. A look by R. Krishna Kumar

Property developers in Mysore are seeking a revised Floor Area Ratio (FAR) in a bid to increase land usage which will have a bearing on the cost of apartments currently reckoned to be on the higher side.

The FAR is the ratio of the built area to the total size of the plot and varies from city to city. However, members of the Builders Association of India, Mysore, and Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) local chapter are trying to impress the authorities to raise the FAR from the prevailing 1.75 to at least 2.5 or more.

IMMEDIATE BENEFIT

“An immediate fallout of the increase in FAR will be a dip in property cost as the cost of land tends to be inversely proportional to the floor area ratio and builders will have the flexibility to add more floors and thus divide the cost of construction among more number of consumers. The end-users will get an immediate benefit ranging up to 30 per cent and this will also help prop up the construction industry while fuelling demand for ready-to-occupy property in Mysore,” said Naga Kumar of Premier Properties.

Speaking to The Hindu PropertyPlus, M.B. Naga Kumar, Managing Director, Premier Properties and President, CREDAI-Mysore, said the issue of revising the FAR for Mysore is long pending and has remained frozen since 1996. The authorities have been impressed upon the need to rejig the floor area ratio in the revised Master Plan for Mysore slated for release in due course.

It was pointed out that most cities in Karnataka have a higher FAR ranging from 2.25 to 2.5 as in Belgaum while it is 3.25 in Bangalore. The low FAR is reckoned to be one of the reasons why the cost of apartments in Mysore is perceived to be very high, almost matching those in Bangalore.

While the apartment costs match that of property in Bangalore, the rental yield in Mysore is low and hence potential investors in the property segment have started questioning the wisdom of putting in their money in Mysore as the returns are low. For the same cost, they can acquire property in Bangalore where the rentals are much higher.

“A better FAR would have helped us utilise the land more efficiently and unless this changes, apartment growth will remain sluggish,” according to other members of the CREDAI in Mysore.

Apart from a revised FAR, property developers are also seeking a re-look into the issue of taxation, according to Naga Kumar. At present, any sale related to apartment or property entails on the consumers to pay VAT, service tax, stamp duty as also registration fee. “The Government should levy either VAT or stamp duty but not both,” say the developers but this is in the realm of policy issues and has remained unchanged.

While the FAR remains a sensitive issue in Mysore given its heritage status, property developers have pointed out that no new construction can come up in the existing heritage zone around the palace and other important structures. The new development is on the fringes of the city and the residential areas and hence the authorities should revise the FAR for construction in such areas.

The argument in favour of a revised FAR is also used to underline the imperatives of preventing the horizontal urban sprawl that is eating up the agriculture land in the hinterland.

Traffic enforcement in Mysore city has gone hi-tech with the police launching BlackBerry-assisted traffic enforcement system on Thursday.

Eighteen traffic police officers, including inspectors,sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors who underwent training at the Traffic Training Institute in Bangalore for three days last month, will be in charge of enforcement using BlackBerry handsets with Bluetooth-enabled handheld printers provided by the Police Computer Wing, Bangalore.

Launching the “paperless” system here, Police Commissioner K.L. Sudheer said BlackBerry-assisted traffic rules enforcement system was being expanded across the State, including in Mysore, and a trial run was undertaken here for a few days.

Bangalore traffic police are using nearly 750 BlackBerry handsets and other accessories for traffic rules enforcement. Nearly 250 handsets had been given to the police in the State for expanding the system.

Centralised server

Mr. Sudheer said the data of traffic offenders would be stored in a centralised server. The device reduces paperwork and gives history of violations also.

80 types of violations

Traffic Inspector Irshad, who explained the working of the new system, said the user-friendly system reduces manpower. The new system can be used to book cases for 80 types of violations.

A press release issued by the police here said statements pertaining to the cases booked could be obtained officer-wise and offence-wise at the click of a button. The system also gives information on the date, time and place of violation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Basavaraj Malagatti, in-charge Regional Transport Officers Ramesh Dubey and Padma Prakash, KSRTC (Rural division) Divisional Controller Naveen and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shankare Gowda were present.

Silent revolution of lake restoration
Jun 15, 2012 :

http://www.deccanherald.com/page_images/thumb/2012/06/15/257224_thump.gif
A quiet ecological revolution is happening in Mysore, which many are fortunately unaware of. This is the restoration of six lakes coming under the Mysore City Corporation. Right now, a lake on Bogadi road is being restored. N Niranjan Nikam visits the area to speak to official lake consultant U N Ravikumar who threw light on what is in store for Mysoreans.

A nother sobriquet that could be added to Mysore, apart from the City of Palaces is the City of Lakes. The three most beautiful lakes that exist now are Kukkarahalli, Karanjikere and Lingambudi lakes (keres) where it is a joy to go and spend quality time.

The lake that is slowly catching the attention of the people that is being restored is the Bogadi lake, probably as old as the Lingambudhi lake (184 years old), off Bogadi road opposite to the Anthropological Survey of India close to the Nirmiti Kendra in Vijayanagar Second stage.

The work on the lake, also called Mariyappana kere, began on June 13 is likely to be completed in another two months, Mysore City Corporation assistant commissioner K Govindappa told City Herald.

“The work includes improvement of the tank bund, the water weir, fencing around the lake. A walking track will be laid in the sixteen acres of the lake,” said Govindappa.

Official lake consultant U N Ravikumar who has been involved in the restoration work of many lakes in and around Mysore said that the work on Bogadi Kere includes construction of one-and-a-half kilometre pathways, construction of toilets, provision for sewage and sullage treatment plant, improvement of bunds, fencing and plantation of trees. The cost of restoration of the 7.5 hectare lake will be Rs one crore.

“When Harsh Gupta was the deputy commissioner, the quiet revolution of the ecological restoration began. Bogadi kere is an upstream lake of Lingambudhi kere. The whole lake earlier used to irrigate acres of land in and around the Bogadi village,” he said.

The lake is a catchment area for the entire Vijayanagar layout as the water from all the drains will flow into the lake. Three Hitachi machines are working to desilt the lake and also remove debris and waste collected.

Once the lake is restored and water starts collecting it will be a beautiful sight to see, said Ravikumar. “As the area is not fully developed the fear of the underground drainage water flowing into the lake is still not there, unlike in Kukkarahalli and Karanjikere,” he said.

Another lake that is close to Bogadi Kere is the Rayana kere which also will be restored by the MCC. The other four lakes that come under the MCC are Dalvoy, Hebbal, Bommanahalli and Hinkal. “Mysore is becoming a model for restoration of lakes in the country. Lake experts from Kerala who visited Mysore recently were surprised to see how far we have gone in the restoration of the lakes,” said Ravikumar.

However, Ravikumar strongly feels that there should be a society to manage the lake like the one in Lingambudhi Kere where the citizens’ initiative has helped maintain the lake.

“There are many birds in the area like the Black Ibis, pond herons, purple moorhens, cuckoos, woodpeckers, quails, which my wife Swaroop and I watch during our morning and evening walks,” said a resident of Vijayanagar second stage Jagadish Prasad. “It is heartening to see that the lake is being restored and many of these birds will move to the lake area shortly,” he added.

ORI in Mysore to be ready by August (http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore/report_ori-in-mysore-to-be-ready-by-august_1702896)

The fabled Oriental Research Institute Mysore, which is undergoing renovation with the help of US consulate, will be ready by August. The cost of repairing the heritage library is said to be about $50,000. This facility has the distinction of housing the original manuscript of Kautilya’s Arthashastra, in addition to 70,000 other palm leaf manuscripts.

The director of the institute, Vidwan Shivakumaraswamy, said the acting public affairs officer of the United State Consulate-General in Chennai, Coriana Ybarra Arnold, visited the facility on Wednesday and appreciated the quality of work. Since it was a heritage structure, which houses one of the oldest libraries in the country, ever care is taken to restore the original glory of the structure and the interior. Efforts were being made to even restore the glass portion of the building.

The institute was constructed in 1887 by the British as a part of the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria’s consecration, but later it was converted into a library in 1891, which is now a part of the Mysore University. It is the first time in its history when it got a big sum of money for renovation from the US government.

Kaynes has formulated a Strategic Road Map to become the leading global EMS company providing End to End Solutions to its customers so that the customer can focus on its core strengths with Intellectual Property safe and well intact.
We also have plans to invest into the manufacturing technologies in emerging high-tech areas such as nano- technology for which we have plans for a tie-up with a Canadian company. Over the years through acquisition of skills and competency in end-to-end manufacturing solutions as well as new product development processes, Kaynes Technology can convert a studio design / concept into an engineering prototype and then to an well engineered product.

Kaynes Technology is one of the leading domestic players in the Electronics Manufacturing services. What are your expectations in this field?
We expect tremendous growth in this area and we believe that India will be
the leader in the high-Tech / High-Mix manufacturing services due to our unique characteristics and advantages. This will bring in a lot of overseas business to India. Further, due to increasing domestic demand fueled by Defence and Aerospace business offsets, infrastructure development and industrial growth, the domestic demand for manufacturing and design services will be quite high. The conditions are ripe for ramping up the volumes through judicious management in the EDMS area.

What are the advantages of PCBAs and FPGA based systems?
PCBAs provide highly reliable and very miniaturised electronic circuits and can accommodate large number of electronic devices /microcircuits like SMDs, THDs, Ball Grid Arrays etc. in multi layer circuits. These Electronic PCBAs are highly reliable due to stringent tests like BBT, AOI, Xray Testing, ICTs, FBTs, CT Scanned Functional Testing etc. High level of protection is provided by special processes like Conformal Coating etc.
FPGA’s are excellent choice for those signal processing applications where higher speed and high performance (MIPS requirement) is required. They make use of look up tables and parallel processing. Whereever more than two MACs (Multiply accumulate units) are required, FPGAs can provide the parallel Multiple MACs with single cycle computation capability. These devices are used for many applications related to Defence, Aerospace, Industrial and Energy Control Systems

What are the new opportunities you are seeing in the marketplace?
As I have said earlier on, there are more and more players both in the small &
medium as well as large scale sectors, who wish to outsource manufacturing and engineering design so as to focus their efforts in R&D, marketing, and value creation for their respective customers. In order to ensure a quick turn around, the EDMS is an effective option. Defence and Aerospace, Non-conventional Energy, Automotive, Transportation, Medical sectors are likely be growth areas for the future.

What are your short-term and medium-term goals?
In the short term, we would like to acquire new customers in the emerging
sectors through aggressive new product development and grow existing clients through expansion into new product categories. In the medium term we will get into ODM sectors in a big way so that we can be of greater value and engagement to our customers.
We expect explosive growth in demand in sectors such as IT, defence and aerospace. However, a lot of capacity and capability have to be built within the industry in order to fulfill the customer aspirations. We are likely to get a high employment potential for technically qualified man-power. Newer co-operations and joint venture
companies are likely to be formed for technology assimilation as well as production of related products and services.

Do you have any plan for new joint ventures, collaborations or business alliance?
We always look at opportunities to enhance our customer engagements through such vehicles. We will go in for strategic alliances as well as several collaborations and joint ventures in the medium term to better address the new business opportunities and to provide appropriate customer focus.

Kaynes Technologies and its high tech state-of-art activities

Kaynes technologies is one the few small firms doing cutting edge work on aviation electronics from the design to the custom manufacturing.

Along with Kaynes, L&T and Infosys and few others work on high technology in Mysore. There are a few companies which do chip design, hardware design etc. Calsoft is one of them. These companies find ecosystem in the City good enough for them to thrive there.

Always, it is these small companies who do niche work rather than their giant counterparts like IBM, Accenture, HP etc.. Government should encourage them with good policies as they provide the maximum employment potential.

Naveen, my class mate and friend was till recently heading aviation division doing program management of all aviation related projects in Infosys- Mysore. He is replaced my some other guy as he (my friend) moved out to one of aviation electronics company in Bangalore.

As Sandybar said, Infy has big development center in Mysore which outsiders hardly know. Media only focuses on the awe inspiring building and facilities training center offers, when they refer to infosys in Mysore. But the fact is, it has good number of projects being developed there through huge number of software professionals.

Yeah. my point of argument is that, SMEs need to be encouraged to come up in various cities by focussing on the value each city has to offer.
For ex:- Belguam has the potential to come up as an aerospace (mechanical design and development), Dharwad has excellence in education and Automobile, which companies can use to develop innovative products and services.

Like wise, Shimoga for food related products, Mangalore/ Udupi for something else. My opinion is that every city has some inherent strength which KA govt should identify and provide incentives supporting the SMEs to thrive there.
This creates lots of employment for local people and they don't have to depend upon Bangalore for their survival.

This is my opinion and view only!!

Pavilion for Gangotri Glades soon

Construction being undertaken at a cost of Rs 80 lakh

The Gangothri Glades Stadium would soon have a world-class pavilion, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 80 lakh. Construction on the pavilion is on full swing at the stadium, which has hosted a number of Ranji matches.

The new pavilion would include separate rooms for two teams playing matches at the stadium located in Manasagangothri. Also, separate rooms for umpires and match referees are also being constructed. A dining hall would also be included in the pavilion.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) convenor Vijayprakash said: “Apart from the new pavilion, arrangements have also been made adjacent to the stadium for providing practise nets.”

With the Royal Challengers-KSCA Academy training budding cricketers at Gangothri Glades, the stadium would have nine practise nets — including eight turf wickets and one concrete wicket.

The academy has 30 players each in the Under-16 and Under-19 categories, who have been selected by a team comprising KSCA secretary Javagal Srinath, former cricketer Roger Binny, Vijay Bharadwaj, KSCA Mysore zone chairman Ashwini Ranjan and convenor Vijayprakash.

Earlier, during his visit to the city, Srinath had stated that the academy would be similar to a school, as budding cricketers can improve their technique at the academy.

He also clarified that while it would provide better facilities to cricketers, selection to the state team would be based on performance. Even though the academy trains budding players, he had said that youth playing for different clubs would have equal opportunities.

With the academy being started in the city, players now won’t have to head to Bangalore for gaining tips on improving their game. Instead, with practise nets and coaches being available at the academy, players can now improve on their game in the city itself.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/257954/pavilion-gangotri-glades-soon.html

Mysore Palace saves Rs 65L on power (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysore-Palace-saves-Rs-65L-on-power/articleshow/14255309.cms)

MYSORE: The Mysore Palace has put on a green cap. The palace will replicate its success on rainwater harvesting pilot on a grand scale to cut down on power consumption and reduce electricity bill.

On the Mysore Palace's radar is harvesting 10 million litres of rainwater ever year. The eco-friendly activity is a win-win for the palace board: its annual electricity bill of Rs 90 lakh is now Rs 25 lakh. Rainwater harvesting has reduced the dependence on borewells.

The 22-acre gardens of the palace require 10 lakh litres of water every month.

In 2009, the palace board started constructing tanks to harvest rainwater with technical inputs from the National Institute of Engineering's Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. In the fourth phase, the board is constructing two tanks of 2-lakh-litre storage capacity outside the Jayamarthanda Gate, the main entry point to the palace. The groundwork will be completed in two months.

Board's deputy director TS Subramanya said: "We were depending on borewells. Harvesting of rainwater has cut down on their use. Even the groundwater has recharged. We are getting water easily from the 10 borewells."

The palace can overcome water scarcity when all the tanks are filled during monsoon.

The present tanks are refilled six times in a year, given the rainfall pattern in Mysore. Once the fourth phase is completed, the tanks will be interconnected to maintain the resources easily and to maintain supply to different gardens, K Shivkumar, an engineer with the board, said.
They should do rain water harvesting in all govt buildings...

MYSORE: Want to jump the queue at the Mysore Zoo? Pay smart.

All you have to do is log on to the zoo's website www.mysorezoo.infoand purchase the tickets. The e-tickets will be valid for seven days from the date of purchase and the holders will get a separate entry to the conservation centre. The web based booking will be available from June 25 when Mysore facility will graduate to be India's first conservation centre to offer the facility.

oIn 2011-12, the zoo has recorded highest footfalls of 30,33,032 visitors, which is some 3.6 3.6 lakh above 2010-11 figures. It gets the highest number of visitors in India even when free entry to children up to 12 years on occasions like Independence Day, Republic day are not included. The surging number of visitors has taken revenue of the zoo to Rs 14.52 crores.

The zoo allowed use of plastic money to purchase the tickets at the counters. Now, the next level is extending online booking of tickets. It has a reason- for some time now, the zoo started to receive complaints that getting ticket for the entry is getting difficult, particular during peak season. During holidays and on weekends, the zoo logs over 20,000 visitors and on weekdays and off-season it registers 7,000 visitors a day. Till date the highest number of visitors to have visited the zoo is recorded on October 6, 2011 when 29,352 visited the zoo.

In 2011-12, the zoo has recorded highest footfalls of 30,33,032 visitors, which is some 3.6 lakh above 2010-11 figures. It gets the highest number of visitors in India even when free entry to children up to 12 years on occasions like Independence Day, Republic day are not included. The surging number of visitors has taken revenue of the zoo to Rs 14.52 crores.

Now, the zoo is extending the benefit of IT to the tourists who plan their visit well in advance. An official said Rs 10 will be charged per online transaction towards service charges. Like in reservation in the trains, one of the visitors who have the e-ticket should carry an ID proof, he stated. There will be no refund and cancellation. As of now, the visitor has to take a printout of the e-ticket and present it at the gate. The system will be finetuned based on the feedback from the visitors, he stated.

Payments to procure e-tickets are processed on a secure server and credit or debit cards can be used. All leading payments processing systems such as VISA and MasterCard are accepted and no personal data is collected and stored on any servers to protect the privacy and security of the cards users, the zoo executive director B P Ravi said.

Along with tickets, visitors can pre-order battery-operated vehicles for tours inside the zoo, pay for usage of still and video cameras, book luggage racks and pay for parking at the zoo parking lot.

MUDA to distribute sites

MYSORE: The Mysore Urban Development Authority will distribute sites in three new layouts it has developed in July. It is also opening a stretch of Outer Ring Road (ORR) which is upgraded to six lane.

District minister S A Ramdas is meeting the CM D V Sadananda Gowda to fix the date for the event. In all 3,099 sites in Ravindaranath Tagore Nagar, Lalithadrinagar and Chamalapura. While the sites are ready for distribution for some four months and MUDA has finalized the seniority list for the allotment of sites, it could not announce dates. Ramdas said it will be done in the first week of July.

Of the four packages for the upgradation of the ORR, one stretch of 7.4 km between Mysore-Bangalore junction to Bannur road junction is ready, which will be inaugurated. The rest of the three packages will be ready by July end.

The MUDA is also handing over three layouts it developed-Dattagalli III stage, Vijayanagar II stage and Satagalli I stage-to MCC along with 14 private layouts for maintenance.

Ramdas said MUDA has conducted a survey of Mysoreans who don't own a house. There are 30,665 such residents who have rented house. This is precursor to devising a housing policy exclusive for Mysoreans, Ramdas said after a meeting with the MUDA officials. The Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) has been approved by the urban development minister Suresh Kumar. The master plan 2031 will be published on July 1 and the objections will be invited, Ramdas stated.

MYSORE: The city bus stand (CBS) is sought to be shifted. It could either be relocated to J K Grounds attached to the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute or to a 6-acre plot where RMC market was based. Both of these spots are located next to the Mysore railway station.

Three years after the CBS was rebuilt with funding from the Centre under the JNNURM, the facility is sought to be shifted out of the city centre to allow free movement of traffic. While the Mysore City Corporation had objected to the location of the CBS when it was under construction, the KSRTC went ahead with the project given that the civic body had issued the No Objection Certificate (NOC), a prerequisite for the implementing agency to get the project approved. The MCC is now constructing multi-storied parking lot at Town Hall premises, which will add to the pressure at the central business district given the location of the CBS and a hypermall.

The plan now is to ease pressure at the CBD by relocating the CBS out its present location-it is operating out of five acre plot abutting the Mysore Palace-and built it either at the JK Grounds or at the RMC market, which is available following shifting of the vegetable market to the APMC yard in Bandipalya. The six-acre plot is attached to the MCC, which was inspected by district minister S A Ramdas on Wednesday. He also visited the JK grounds where the MMC principal Dr Geetha Avadhani made know that the institution would not like to part with the land used as a sport ground by medicos.

Accompanied by DC P S Vastrad and KSRTC Mysore urban divisional controller M N Srinivas, Ramdas, who is medical education minister, toured the sites. Unlike earlier when the politicos spoke of taking over the JK Grounds to build CBS, Ramdas aware of the opposition from the medicos and alumni of the college, said he is not particular that the bus stand should be based here. "It is one of the alternatives. If there is opposition, we will go in for 6 acre plot at RMC yard," he said. The plan is to take the JK grounds and allot land at the RMC to the medical college. If that doesn't workout, the bus stand is proposed to be constructed at the RMC. According to him, they will get feedback from various stakeholders and decide in 15 days.

On earlier occasions, there were opposition, even protest by the students when the proposal to build a bus stand at the JK grounds was mooted. Though it is thought of for some two decades, it is going no where. Now that Ramdas is both medical education district in-charge minister, he wants to give it some serious try.

The CBS is proposed to be used for non-motor vehicles like tongas and some part of it for parking of vehicles.

Mysore planners moot bicycle sharing system in Mysore

To promote a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle, the district administration is planning to implement Public Bicycle-Sharing System in the Heritage City.

"The project is awaiting the approval of the authority, and the project blueprint is ready," said DC P S Vastrad. "We want to make some areas free of vehicles. Initially, the plan will be implemented in the University of Mysore campus," he said, adding that the project will be extended to other areas depending on its success there.

Further, the DC said government officials have been requested to pedal from their quarters to their offices "as it can reduce the use of government vehicles".

Public bicycle-sharing system, which is prevalent in European countries, moved to India a couple of years ago. The system enables people to obtain bicycles on rent. They can subscribe to the facility online by making monthly or annual payment. The plan will be implemented by Mysore City Corporation under Mysore City Land transport Authority (MCLTA).http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysore-planners-moot-bicycle-sharing-system-in-Mysore/articleshow/14311598.cms

FAR in Mysore far from reality?

The argument in favour of a revised FAR is also to prevent the horizontal urban sprawl that is eating up agriculture land in the hinterland. A look by R. Krishna Kumar

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01114/16BGPMYSORE_STORY_1114662f.jpg

The argument in favour of a revised FAR is also used to underline the imperatives of preventing the horizontal urban sprawl that is eating up the agriculture land in the hinterland.http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/homes-and-gardens/article3532295.ece

Mysore: Foreign footfall to Mysore has seen a drop in the past one year, indicating a deeper malaise thats afflicting the tourism sector of this historic city.
Theres no disputing that the number of tourists both desi and from other shores has been growing at a steady clip, clocking a surprising 100% rate in just two years. But the nearly 7% fall in tourists who wing in from abroad hides a bigger story: that of lack of aggressive roadshows to push Mysore as a must-visit tourist destination and the absence of air connectivity.
In 2011-12,Mysore received 35,20,112 visitors,of them 75,206 were foreigners. In 2010-11,the number of foreign visitors motoring down to Mysore had crossed the 80,000 mark.In one year,Mysore lost more than 5,000 foreign tourists. This, despite Karnataka attracting 16.5% more foreign tourists in the current year. And Mysore ranks a shocking 16th in attracting overseas tourists, according to the Karnataka Tourism Department.
Mysore Palace Board deputy director Subramanyam told The Times of India that the fall is due to lack of an airport and other reasons. He contended that Mysore,as a tourist place, has many places to offer which cannot be visited in a day. This brings hospitality sector into the picture as stayovers demand better,well-appointed hotels,of which Mysore hasnt many.
The Mahajan Tourism Department Institute was part of the International Tourism Bureau held in Berlin. Its director Nagapathi said,At the Berlin do,the Karnataka tourism stall didnt have a single brochure to hardsell Mysore or its signature event,Dasara. Some 187 countries participated in the show.Is this the way to market a heritage city like Mysore He said Agra,Jaipur and Goa,among other places, were seeing a rush of foreign tourists.
Vinay, who operates heritage walks for tourists, said recession could be the spoiler.Mysore must have a functional airport and good hotels, he said.Tourism departments deputy director Shivalingappa claimed innocence about the decrease in foreign visitors.

PREPARE DPR ON ROPEWAY IN TWO DAYS: RAMDAS

Mysore, June 21- District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas yesterday directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the rope-way project to Chamundi Hill within the next two days.

Speaking at the progress review meeting of developmental projects in the district at the office of the Deputy Commissioner in city, he regretted that despite being instructed to submit a report on the project at a meeting at Bangalore, the officials had not bothered to prepare and submit the same.

Ramdas also said that he would ensure that MUDA implemented the project after the submission of the DPR on the project.

Innovative Film City: The Minister also asked the officials to get ready for implementing the Innovative Film City project and added that the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce had identified 107 spots in city and district for shooting of films besides asking the KIADB officials to acquire the required land.

District Offices Complex: Ramdas also directed officials to take steps to take administrative sanctions for construction of a District Offices Complex to house govt. offices presently operating from rented places.

Temples to be renovated The Minister also asked officials of the Muzrai Department to undertake repair works at 8 temples in the Palace premises which were in a dilapidated condition.

Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad said that though many environmentalists and social organisations had opposed the ropeway project, its implementation becomes inevitable to avoid wastage of fuel by thousands of vehicles which travel up and down the Hill each day.

As the plot identified for the project near the helipad is under litigation, the 20 acre plot of vacant govt. land near Uttanahalli Road can be acquired for the ropeway project, he observed. http://www.starofmysore.com

DC'S CYCLING IDEA DISCUSSED

The issue of government officials cycling their way to work for at least one day a week was the main point of discussion during the DC's Phone-in programme this morning, which is held every third Thursday of the month.

Apparently enthused by Star of Mysore's special report yesterday, the Dy. Commissioner P.S. Vastrad raised the issue citing the newspaper report.

Reiterating his emphasis on encouraging cycling among the government officials, he said that the rule will be in force from next Monday. He also directed the Heads of various departments to facilitate cycle parking space, watchmen for the cycles and other necessary facilities.

"The system of bicycle-sharing has been in practice at the Infosys campus here since years. The district administration has also urged the Mysore University to implement such a system. We have also approached the managements of colleges to follow suit in their respective campuses," said the DC, pointing out that most high school students rode bicycles to schools in the city and rural areas too.

Cycle Tracks: The DC directed the Police Commissioner and Traffic ACP to identify broad roads in city suitable for cycle tracks and demarcate with yellow paint at least 18 kms of road margins exclusively for cycles.

Priority for pedestrians: "In our country, the Police, RTO and KSRTC give priority to four-wheelers, then to two-wheelers, and then to cyclists and lastly to the pedestrians," said the DC and announced that the order of priority will be reversed henceforth.

Cautioning the KSRTC bus drivers against over-speeding and rash driving, he warned that in case a cyclist on cycle-track or a pedestrian is hit, a fine of Rs. 10 lakh will be imposed.

He, however, went on to add that it was just a warning and that he was not forcibly implementing the rules, but only intended to make the city roads safe, reduce pollution level and induce health consciousness among the citizens.

Phone-In: During the routine hour-long programme, the DC lent his ear to 18 callers, mostly from Nanjangud, Hunsur and H.D. Kote, complaing about scarcity of drinking water, lack of streetlights, encroachment of lakes, lack of burial grounds etc.

Government’s achievements

DC P.S. Vastrad, following the Chief Minister’s order, directed the Heads of all departments to prepare lists of the BJP government’s achievements in the past four years. The reports are to be submitted to the DC in four days’ time.

Cutting of dry trees

A complaint about the Forest Department’s apathy towards an appeal to remove five dry and precariously standing roadside trees in Gokulam, was made by one K. Janardhan, resident of Gokulam IIIrd Stage, along with his neighbours who attended the Phone-In programme in person. Janardhan said that the written complaint was lodged with the Forest Department officials on Feb. 24, 2012, but no action was taken so far. ACF Durgegowda told the DC that the delay had occurred due to tender process and assured to remove the trees immediately. http://www.starofmysore.com

N'GUD TO BE DEVELOPED AS A MODEL CONSTITUENCY

V. Srinivas Prasad completes four years as MLA

By K.Ravi Shankar

Nanjangud, June 20- During my four four-year term as MLA, I have made sincere efforts to develop the constituency consisting of the famous pilgrim centre Nanjangud, which is also called Dakshina Kashi into a model constituency, declared Former Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies and MLA V. Srinivas Prasad.

In an exclusive interview with Star of Mysore at the temple town on Tuesday, the MLA said that during the past four years he had made all efforts to protect the interests of the people of all sections of society besides ensuring communal harmony putting into practice all the experiences of his long political career.

The Mini Vidhana Soudha built when present Chamarajanagar MP R. Dhruvanarayana was the MLA near the Tourist Bungalow, in the town had collapsed. Srinivas Prasad said that he had fought for the construction of a different Mini Vidhana Soudha on a 3-acre plot of land belonging to the Sericulture Department on Ooty road as a different building could not be built on the old spot.

The works on providing drinking water to 56 villages in Koulande hobli from Kapila River had been completed and the same had been inaugurated by Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, thus ensuring gradual improvement of water supply facilities in the constituency, he said.

The much awaited Rs. 22 crore works on the development of Nanjangud-Hullahalli road has been taken with financial assistance from Calamity Relief Fund, he said and added that with this the long cherished project was nearing completion.

He also mentioned that his fight for conversion of Mysore-Nanjangud road into a four-lane road had reached the tender invitation stage and claimed that when completed, the project would ensure a fall in the number of accidents on the road. He added that a high-tech bus stand would be built on the plot of land adjacent to the KSRTC Depot on Nanjangud-Chamarajanagar road after acquiring land from the Horticultural Department.

Dwelling upon the other works initiated during his four-year tenure as MLA, Srinivas Prasad said that the Rs. 1.2 crore Ambedkar Bhavan built near the private bus stand in the town was ready for inauguration and plans were on to install a statue of Dr. Ambedkar at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh at the Ambedkar Circle. He added that the Rs. 7 crore project of providing road dividers and sodium street lights on the road between Apollo Circle and Srikanteshwara Temple had begun.

He also stated that Union Labour Minister Dr. Mallikarjuna Kharge had approved the construction of a well equipped ESI Hospital in the industrial area at a cost of Rs. 6 crore. The fire brigade office and guest house which are functioning at the APMC yard would be shifted to a plot of land identified in the industrial area.

To ensure that the fund released for construction of a PU College would not go unspent, the MLA said that after discussion with the Chief Minister, the permission for construction of the college at the land belonging to the Sericulture Department on Ooty Road had been obtained. He also added that a Govt. First Grade College had been built at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh at Hullahalli.

Stating that plans had been finalised for developing the historic town of Nanjangud on the lines of Udupi, Srinivas Prasad said that he had ensured that the funds allotted for developmental works by the agriculture, irrigation, social welfare and information departments had been properly utilised.

He further claimed that houses under Basava and Indira Awaz schemes had been allotted to the beneficiaries keeping at bay the middle men and added that he would make all efforts to ensure completion of the developmental works to be undertaken in coming days.

Nanjangud is a nice historic and industrial satellite town of Mysore.BRTS Ppossible on Mysore-Nanjangud road?

‘ITC shirking from its responsibility’

Mysore, June 21, 2012, DHNS:
Families who lost lands yet to be compensated with job per family
State general secretary of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Badagalapura Nagendra alleged that the ITC group property that is coming up at Tandavapura Indsutrial Area (TANDIA), Nanjangud is denying jobs to farmers whose lands were acquired for the very project.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday, he further alleged that the company is not sticking to its assurance of providing jobs to farmers, on whose land the company stands now, or their family members.

Many families, which lost their livelihood with the piece of land they lost for this project, are awaiting since five years to get a permanent job.

He said the company is now backing out, citing company rules, preparing grounds to keep farmers away from recruitments for the company.

Nagendra disclosed that the company was now putting forward few requirements which obviously many illiterate farmers do not posses.

Furthermore, it also says in its agreement employees could be terminated from their service as per wish of the company.

He accused the company of humiliating farmers with their new bylaws. He urged the company to provide one employment opportunity to farmer and his family for each acre of land acquired by them.

He said memorandum submitted by the ryots to the deputy commissioner, ITC and other related officials have fallen on deaf ears.

“Farmers are staging a protest at Nanjangud from June 11, which the authorities claim that they know nothing of.” Nagendra said that the Chief Minister has called the farmers for a meeting on July 22 at his official residence Krishna. “We have told the CM not to convene the meeting for the sake of formality, just to offer us coffee and snacks; but to discuss various issues and problems faced by farmers and measures to be taken by government.”

Protest

He said a protest would be staged on June 23 when union minister Mallikarjuna Kharge is to visit Nanjangud for inauguration of ESI hospital.

He blamed local MLAs of being irresponsible over issues pertaining to the farmers.

He said that protests in front of offices and branches of ITC company would be staged if their issues were not solved and also intensify the protests against State and Central governments for not heeding to their problems.

Puttaswamy, Ashwath Narayana Urs, Nanjundaswamy and others were present.

Your passport woes might end soon
TNN | Jun 23, 2012, 03.01AM IST
BANGALORE: Things can soon fall in place for thousands of passport applicants in Karnataka, as the Ministry of External Affairs has already directed Regional Passport Office in Bangalore to start implementing the corrective steps. Mysoreans have something to look forward too, as MEA has given a nod to start a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) soon.

For starters, the first passport mela will be held at all four PSKs in Karnataka on June 23 and June 24, 2012 between 9.30am and 2pm. "Applicants can walk into this mela before 2pm with their original documents and one set of self-attested photocopies, photographs, downloaded forms, cash/demand draft (DD). We will entertain all applicants who walk in before 2pm and try to clear their grievance on the spot," said Dr KJ Srinivasa, regional passport officer, Bangalore.

He added: "The MEA has examined all aspects about starting a PSK in Mysore. There is a possibility that one will be opened in Mysore soon. Gulburga will get a mini PSK shortly."

Meanwhile, the police department has been asked to probe into various complaints against touts, added Srinivasa.

External affairs minister SM Krishna also spoke to Praveen Sood, inspector general of police (computer wing), Karnataka, over the passport issue on Friday, after TOI reported about the menace. Sood will soon be meeting Krishna in Delhi.

Confirming the news, Sood told TOI, "The main attempt would be to extend the computerization process from MEA to police stations and cutting down the process of sending mails and letters from the office of police commissioner to station house officer (SHO) in each police station."

"The police verification process eats 80% of time taken to obtain a passport, from the time the passport officer okays the applicant's documents. SM Krishna directed me to work out a way to reduce this time which delays passport services to people. He is interested in starting a pilot project in Bangalore and Karnataka. We are working towards it," he said.

He explained that once mails are received by passport office, they are sent in bulk to the commissioner's office. "They are downloaded, which itself takes time and then segregated to go to different police stations. From there, another set of applications is sent by mail to the ACP and DCP. These are again downloaded and sent to SHOs of police stations, physically," he explained.

"But this is not required. All police stations in Karnataka are connected by intranet, and online services can be extended from MEA to the police station. While filling the form, if the applicant can write in which police station jurisdiction does his house come under, then the form can directly be sent to that particular SHO. Even the SHO can ask the applicant to come to his office by sending an SMS. This saves the first 10 days," Sood explained.

He has been meeting top TCS professionals o integrate the electronic ways so that it becomes a less time-consuming affair. He also said that TCS is ready with a blueprint but the MEA has to chalk out ways for the integration process.

Sood added that sending an SMS could be used to update the applicant on where his files are released from the police station or received at the commissioner's office or received by passport office staff.

"Even for people who would apply for a foreign VISA, they get an SMS at every level of acceptance of their application. But then when it comes for police verification, until it is cleared from the RPO level, the online status of the passport would keep showing 'Police Verification'. Instead, we can update the status online and keep their hopes alive," he added.

Mysore varsity proposes power station

Exclusively to cater to the power needs of Manasagangotri

With the University of Mysore installing new equipment under the Rs 100 crore grant from the Centre, round the clock power to keep the machines on is a must.

Taking cognisance of this, the varsity proposes to have a separate station at Kukkarahalli lake.

Following the proposal, energy minister Shobha Karandlaje inspected the spot 35x65 metre at the lake site on Friday. If uninterrupted power supply is guaranteed, it can also help keep UPS energy sufficient, as is the intention of the varsity. Apart from Manasagangotri, Crawford Hall will also be benefited.

Earlier, the varsity Syndicate had approved the proposal. What’s pending is an approval from the higher education department.

Vice-chancellor V G Talwar, registrar B Ramu and others were present.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/258976/mysore-varsity-proposes-power-station.html

More to Mysore than heritage: Sadananda Gowda

Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Friday announced a number of sops for the city of palaces at the inaugural ceremony of the Mysore Zonal Investors meet 2012. This includes an international standard convention centre, a pharmaceutical park, a film city, a cricket stadium to host international matches and better air connectivity. To top it all he also announced a 50% cut in the trade licence fee.

“Why I am doing all this is to tap the maximum potential this city has for attracting investment in industries and infrastructure. Much attention has not been given to this city in this regard. Mysore was left alone to be a city of palaces and relics, but I feel that apart from being such a great heritage city, it should also become an international destination for industry, knowledge and tourism.” The International Convention Centre will come up on a 35.32 acres land on T Narsipura Road, he added.

Bangalore GIM: The global investors meet proposed to be held in Bangalore in June was expected to attract an investment of over Rs6 lakh crore for the state. It was Rs4 lakh crore in 2010.

Throughout his speech Gowda kept on hinting at the Mysore-Mangalore road link, “Somehow I feel that the Mysore-Bangalore-Mangalore triangle will be the future growth zone, the exporters will have to be given a port connectivity through New Mangalore Port, which will help the exporters to set shop in Mysore,” the CM said.

‘Lack of facilities’ keeps trucks out of terminal

MYSORE: The D Devaraja truck terminal, in spite being hi-tech and having good facilities, has failed to attract truckers. The terminal, inaugurated by chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda 15 days ago, can accommodate 96 heavy trucks at a time. But still, truckers continue to park their vehicles on roadsides, posing danger to motorists and congesting roads. The news of terminal being privatized -- which, if happens, may make them pay huge fee for the facilities -- is said to be the dampener for them to feel discouraged. Safety is another concern.Terminal in charge H Rajendra said an average of 4-5 trucks arrive at the terminal per day. "A meagre fee of Rs 10 (for 12 hours) and Rs 20 (for 24 hours) is collected for parking. But still, drivers don't turns up in good numbers," Rajendra added.

According to him, it takes Rs 2 lakh for maintenance and salary of guards and officers. But the fee collected in a span of 15 days is just Rs 1,600. So far, the terminal has attracted only 60 trucks. The issue has already been referred to the district commissioner and other officials concerned. When contacted, Mysore District Lorry Owners' Association president B Kodandarama said: "Everyday, about 600 trucks ply in the city. But drivers are not ready halt at their trucks at the terminal as they feel it's insecure. Also, there is no canteen facility.""For us to use the terminal, the tender should be allotted to localites. Those from other places take the tender and increase the fee, which the poor lorry crews cannot afford," he added.

Secondly, truck agents who have their offices in the city cannot afford the rent here -- it is Rs 800 per sqft. "They earn their living through the commission they get, and privatization of the terminal would mar their earnings," he pointed out.

Kondandarama wanted the next tender -- to be called on June 26 -- be given to locals or to the Association for maintenance. He has written to the chief minister on the issue. The first phase of work at the terminal, built on 16.20-acre land, is over at a cost of Rs 12.48 crore. At present, it has facilities like drinking water, paid rest room and washrooms. Medical shop, fuel station, auto garage, service station and canteen are planned in the second phase.

Royals to present Ursu university

Ursu Boarding reopens; Wadiyar hopeful to start Varsity in seven years

Wadiyars, the erstwhile rulers of Mysore and pioneers in education in the then Mysore State, aim to make it bigger in the future, by setting up an exclusive Ursu University in five to seven years down the line.

This was disclosed by royal scion Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar at the resumption of Sri Chamarajendra Ursu Boarding School on Krishnaraja boulevard here on Sunday.

The school popular as Ursu Boarding was an initiative of the then ruler SriChamarajendra Wadiyar in 1892.

Wadiyar, who is also the patron of Sri Jayachamaraja Ursu Education Trust, under which educational institutions of the community are being managed, said the reopening of the boarding school is a step towards establishing the university. A year ago, the same trust had opened the new building of Sri Vani Vilasa Ursu School in Nazarbad.

Wadiyar sounded upset recalling that some vested interests had misguided the members of the community, circulating rumours that the Ursu Boarding School had been closed permanently.

In reality, Wadiyar said, the building had given away in parts inviting danger. Both sewage and water connections — 100 years old — had to be redone after closing the school for two years. In addition to this, some parts of the building had been occupied by unscrupulous elements in nearby localities, post-dusk hours, turning the place into a safe haven for illegal activities.

The existing building, constructed during the tenure of the then ruler Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, father of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, had adopted modern technology, recalled the royal scion.

Like software giants N R Narayan Murthy and Azim Premji who are creating wealth not only for themselves, but for others too, the trust has made a start, Wadiyar said.

Understanding the significance of education, Wadiyar said, he infused a new lease of life to the trust by extending financial assistance.

Chairperson of the trust and Wadiyar’s wife Pramoda Devi Wadiyar thanked the governing council and all others involved in making the project a success.

Vice-president Bharati Urs gave a synopsis of the history of the school, while Nandini Prakash of International Institute of Montessori Studies briefed about the activities.

Princesses Meenakshi Devi, Kamakshi Devi and Indrakshi Devi, secretary of the trust Mahesh Urs and others were present.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/259355/royals-present-ursu-university.html

South Western Railways to double tracks between Bangalore and Mysore by 2014

BANGALORE: The Minister of state for Railways, KH Muniyappa said that the doubling of tracks between Bangalore and Mysore will be completed by 2014. He said in a press conference in Bangalore that the project was facing a lot of issues pertaining to land acquisition, which is now being resolved.

This route has become busier by day; at present around 25,000 people travel between these two cities by the railway on a daily basis. South Western Railways eyed the project of doubling the tracks work which would ensure better connectivity and more trains between these two places in 2008. But land acquisition was the hindrance.

A total of 138 km of tracks have to be doubled and is sanctioned in three phases-Bangalore to Kengeri (12km), Kengeri to Ramnagaram(32km) and Ramnagaram to Mysore(94km). Although these works were sanctioned between 2003-2008, the works never started, because of right of way issues in Mandya. Muniyappa said that the work is going on full swing. "There is 50 acre land which is left to be acquired in Mandya district. The work was supposed to be complete by 2011 but the delay is attributed land related issues," he said.

He also said that shortage of funds from the ministry of railways is a second reason, why multiple rail projects are yet not taken up in the state. He said that when the SWR requires Rs210 crores for works related to the state, they get only Rs30 crores as funds. Last year the SWR was sanctioned Rs60 crores only.

State govt to sanction land free of cost

Muniyappa announced that state government has agreed to provide land to Railways to undertake the expansion of network and projects in state. "The state government is going to give land for free for works between Whitefield-Kolar, Kudchi-Bagalkot, Tumkur-Davangere and Shimoga-Harihar," he said in a press conference on Monday in Bangalore.

They should reduce all the buses roaming around Palace which causes congestion. Also dedicated cycle lane needed since the ooty road is filled up by heavy vehicles and is dangerous for cyclists.

GOVT. OKAYS LOCAL PLANNING AREA 2031 FOR MYSORE CITY

Planning area for 509 sq kms; includes 7 more villages

The master-plan for Mysore Local Planning Area (MLPA) for year 2031, which had been submitted to the government, has finally been given the approval.

The draft process for the MLPA had begun in 2009 and the same was submitted to the government in April 2011, disclosed District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas, in an exclusive interview with SOM this morning. The proposal was approved by the Minister for Urban Development S. Suresh Kumar recently.

Ramdas said that as per the MLPA, four more villages on the city's periphery — three coming under Jayapura Hobli and four under Yelwal Hobli — will be included into the city limits, which is planned for a total area of 509 sq.kms. The initial proposal of 475 sq.kms has now been extended by another 34 sq.kms.

The draft for MLPA has been prepared by Sai Consulting Engineers, Ahmedabad, at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore, the Minister said.

"The objective of the MLPA is to have a vision for Mysore City for the next 20 years to preserve the cultural heritage and 'royal city' characteristics," he said.

"MLPA also envisages to strengthen economic base of Mysore region with activities like cottage industries, IT, BT, food industries, tourism and traffic & transportation," the Minister said.

Objectives of MLPA: 1. To promote Mysore city as a destination for investment in non-polluting economic activities like IT & BT, service sectors and tourism related activities.

2. To promote and conserve the cultural heritage, preserve the natural characteristics of the city and it environs through special development regulations.

3. To plan for an emerging metropolis with options for mono/metro rail system, peripheral roads and suitable linkages with surrounding settlements, etc.

4. Planning to prevent misuse of natural landscapes.

Public opinion

Proposals will be implemented after obtaining public opinions that will be assimilated in three phases — first meeting will be of elected representatives and city-based organisations; second meeting will be of technical experts and third will be for public, said Ramdas, adding that modifications can be made based on public opinions and as per the situation demands locally. http://www.starofmysore.com

Flight at dawn from Mysore airport soon

Jet Airways may begin services from Dasara this year

If all goes well, commercial flights will take wing from the Mysore airport at Mandakalli this Dasara season.

The Jet Airways has given an in-principle approval to a proposal from the civil aviation ministry. “The only thing remaining is confirmation,” C Manjunath, director of the airport, told Deccan Herald.

He said the private airline was making a preliminary study to reschedule its flights. It may launch the services in October, coinciding with Nada Habba Dasara.

Manjunath said his office had forwarded a proposal to reschedule the arrival and departure of flights. If the departure is scheduled for 7 am, it will help bonafide passengers catch connecting flights in other prominent cities. If the flight makes a return journey in the evening and halts at night at the airport, it would be more helpful, he said.

Quoting an e-mail from Jet Airways, the director said the airline was keen on the morning flight, but was dithering over night parking at the airport. The airline higher-ups are wary of time, he said.

Earlier, when Kingfisher Airlines operated flights from Mysore, the arrival was at 12.30 pm and departure at 1.10 pm.

The response was overwhelming with a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 70 passengers availing the services on week days.

Taking the passenger traffic into cosideration, there could be at least 50 passengers for the morning flights. The figures are based on the feedback received from the representatives of software and multinational companies in the city. The same has been conveyed to Jet Airways, said Manjunath.

Kingfisher Airlines, which launched its services during Dasara in October 2010, withdrew its services after a year. But the full-fledged airport is still catering to chartered flights with a seating capacity of four to 13 twice a week.

'Mythri' move to rein in fleecing drivers

MYSORE: Now those planning to visit the Heritage City to have a glimpse of the world famous Dasara festivities can heave a sigh of relief. More than 100 GPS-enabled Mythri autorickshaws and 50 cabs will be ready here to save you from the clutches of fleecing autorickshaw and cab drivers in the city.

In the wake of increasing complaints of drivers exploiting tourists visiting the city, especially during the Dasara celebrations, the district administration and the tourism department have joined hands to launch Mythri, a tourist-friendly transport system.

Under the project, 100 autorickshaws and 50 cabs will be introduced initially. This will be increased during the festival season.

The vehicles will be equipped with GPS, audio player and wireless service. There will be newspapers and leaflets placed inside. There will be audio commentary about each place in Kannada, Hindi and English. The GPS system will help the authorities track the vehicle movement, district commissioner P S Vastrad said.

Drivers who have passed PUC and graduation will be trained for the purpose. They will be given 15-day training in soft skills, spoken English and etiquettes. Drivers will have to invest Rs 25,000 while the district administration will sanction Rs 50,000 each for autos and cabs.

This initiative is mooted to implement the concept "Athithi Devobava", said K S Nagapathi, director, Mahajan tourism development institute.

The fare in the Mythri vehicles will be 10 per cent higher than the ordinary vehicles. Mysoreans can also utilize the facility, the DC said and added that the project will take off in a month.

Peripheral Ring Road to be growth engine of Mysore

MYSORE: Move over the Outer Ring Road. The mini-metro will have a Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) that will help in stretching the boundaries of the city netting additional space for people to house in.

Projected as the next destination after Bangalore, the tourist hub will sport the next version of the ring road once the draft proposals in Master Plan 2031 are accorded a go-ahead. The PRR is planned to be developed 7 kms away from the Outer Ring Road, which will extend the city limits by over three times.

Sources told The Times of India that the PRR forms the pivotal project of the Master Plan 2031 submitted by the Mysore Urban Development Authority. "The proposed expressway will be built 7 kms away from the ORR, which will help us bring into the city area the rural areas surrounding Mysore," they stated. The city's development agenda cab be chalked out better given the availability of land.

This comes amidst upgradation of the ORR to six-lane highway at a cost of Rs 347 crore. The six-lane expressway will be ready by July helping Mysore to in development agenda even as it cuts down traffic inside the city areas. The ORR project assisted the civic bodies to extend the boundaries in 2000 when major part of it was completed. The ORR stretching 22 meters and connecting major roads spurred realty. While the Mysore City Corporation is planned to be upgraded to Brauth Mysore City Corporation adding 41 villages in its surrounding, the MUDA has broader vision for the city. The proposal to upgrade the MCC has run into trouble with the Mysore MP H Vishwanath opposing it.

When it started to work on comprehensive development plan (CDP), the urban body focused on attending to the increased demand for land around Mysore for housing and non-housing purposes. The PRR is not part of the plan to extend the limits of the MCC. The Master Plan 2031 is essentially to ensure that Mysore retains its brand value as a planned city, the sources stated. The plan is to attract investment to Mysore on IT/BT and service sectors. "We can control the land use pattern by way of regulations in the areas that form part of Master Plan 2031 and keep Mysore's growth on the track," they explained.

The Master Plan 2031 aims to go in for satellite model of growth and planning to include 117 villages in Mysore, Nanjangud and Srirangapatna taluks. With the city getting additional water courtesy Kabini drinking water project, the MUDA aims to sustain the growth for 20 years.

TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Peripheral-Ring-Road-to-be-growth-engine-of-Mysore/articleshow/14471929.cms)

That already existing Yelwala-Srirangapatna bypass road will be a part of PRR in mysore.Works to develop that road should have begun by now as announced by the karnataka speaker.

EARLY MORN' JET AIRWAYS FLIGHTS FROM DASARA

Mysore, June 28- Hopes of the city getting air connectivity yet again have been rekindled with the Jet Airways agreeing in principle to operate flights to and from Mandakalli airport, probably from October onwards, coinciding with the Dasara festival.

Mandakalli Airport Director C. Manjunath told SOM today that the Jet Airways has given an in-principle approval to a proposal from the Civil Aviation Ministry and its confirmation is awaited.

"A preliminary study is being made by the Jet Airways to reschedule its flights from Mysore. We have forwarded a proposal to reschedule the arrival and departure of flights," said Manjunath.

"If the flights take off from Mysore at 7 am, passengers can catch connecting flights from Bangalore to other prominent cities. If the flight makes a return journey in the evening and halts at night at the airport, it would be more helpful for the passengers," Mysore Airport Director opined and added "Jet Airways is keen on operating morning flights, but is skeptical over night parking at the airport." Earlier, when Kingfisher Airlines operated flights from Mysore, the arrival was at 12.30 pm and departure at 1.10 pm.

"Taking the passenger traffic into cosideration, there could be at least 50 passengers for the morning flights. The figures are based on the feedback received from the representatives of software and multinational companies in the city. The same has been conveyed to Jet Airways," said Manjunath. Dufferin Tower gets facelift

MYSORE: Come August, Mysoreans will have a new picnic spot in Dufferin Tower, popularly known as Chikka Gadiyara ( small clock tower), for weekend getaways.

After Nishat Bagh, Mysore City Corporation is developing the ornate heritage structure. The civic body is renovating its environs and installing musical fountain. The space will enable the visitors to relax in front of the majestic tower and savour the city's splendor. To start with, fountains will be played on Sundays.

Hitherto, the place was being occupied by push-cart vendors and used for parking. But the civic body prepared the project to spruce the tower built in memory of Lord Dufferin, the first governor general of India in late 18th century.

Corporator M J Ravikumar told TOI: "We can't build such ornate structures which speak about the rich history of the city, now. As the representatives of people, we can only preserve them for the next generation. The place was neglected and was occupied by vendors and motorists. It had even become a place for illegal activities after dusk." Later, it was decided in the council to develop the century-year-old tower on the lines of social-gathering places in Europe.

MCC zone-6 assistant commissioner E Thimappa said the Rs 48-lakh project has been taken up under general programme. They are developing the tower area adjoining Devaraja Market in the heart of the city, by laying tiles and putting up fountains. The project, commenced two months ago, is expected to be complete soon. "Surely, it will turn out to be a favourite hangout for Mysoreans and tourists," he expressed.

Isn't it too much of a hype? That place is so small, hardly can accommodate 50 people and the surroundings are not so good or green so that one would go there to relax.

But on the other hand nishat bagh has been given a good facelift.

Very nice article by Vikram Muthanna in SOM today, reflects the callous attidude and short sightedness of city planners.
:bash:
http://www.starofmysore.com/main.asp?type=specialnews&item=6794

On June 26, 2012 it was reported that MUDA in its 2012-13 budget has reportedly allocated Rs.50 lakh, yes half-a-crore, to get a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed park right in front of Lalitha Mahal Palace. The proposal they have is that this park is expected to have…, get ready to be seduced: A Sound & Light Show, an exhibition, animatronics (robotic moving objects), a musical fountain, a big movie screen (IMAX), a regular theatre, an open air theatre, yoga centre, laser show and a battery-operated train.

Phew! That’s not all. There is going to be an artificial river flowing around this park and on the banks will be eye-catching statues and paintings showcasing the grandeur of the city. It seems they want to make it like the Akshardham in New Delhi.

Wow! We are impressed. Aquarium, Bullet Train, a Mysore Eye and now an Akshardham. We are on a roll here. But then, isn’t Akshardham on an area of more than 100 acres and on the banks of river Yamuna? So with just under 30 acres are we getting a mini Akshardham, then? Also Akshardham was built in 5 years, costed Rs. 200 crore and was paid for by the devotees of Swaminarayan and not by the government. In fact, it’s called Swaminarayan Akshardham. Also it would be inappropriate for MUDA to compare their park proposal to Akshardham.

Akshardham is a temple complex, which, apart from housing a beautiful temple also has other pieces of architectural wonder and imparts information about our heritage and culture in an interesting manner. What our MUDA is trying to do is create a congested entertainment park: A mini-Disney Land, with laser show, animatronics and boat rides. While we may just end up getting a half complete Disney Land, the people in power will get a Treasure Island.

Now we want to know this. If the preparation of this mini-Disney Land project report itself is going to cost Rs. 50 lakh then we wonder how much the project will cost? Also we would like to remind our leaders that we people have not forgotten the initial plans for this 35 acres of land.

A few years back they said this area of 35 acres was demarcated for a much-hyped Heritage Park. And accordingly Rs. 1 crore was spent to put up a compound around it. Then nothing happened. As inaction continued, iron grills were stolen in parts, shrubs continued to grow, local boys created a small cricket pitch, men created a shuttle court for day use and come night time, the construction workers made it their toilet, the drunks made it a place to enjoy their brew and night rangers found a place to screw. After a while, the government woke up and said the area would be turned into a Rock Garden. Again a coat of white wash was given to the compound. Then silence again.

And now suddenly they are trying to create a Mini-Disney Land? Will they simply paint the walls again and disappear until the next big idea strikes them?

By the way we have to ask: laser show, exhibition, river, battery-operated train, animatronics, a theatre…. isn’t there already a place for this? If we remember rightly, we think it’s called the Dasara Exhibition Grounds? Why can’t the government take up all these projects in the Exhibition grounds, which is much bigger in area and already a recognised centre for entertainment? Why build something similar just 2 kilometers away?

While the government wants to have a mini-Disney Land on Lalitha Mahal road, have they put the effort to complete the Ring Road? Have they thought of providing parking for this entertainment park on this busy road? If they give parking space within the park, then usable area will further reduce. And in the end the park will look more like a gaudy, cheap, third world imitation of a first world entertainment park.

Also won’t all these construction and mass human traffic ruin the green surroundings and views of Lalitha Mahal Palace? Also, is it safe to build a big IMAX theatre so close to a helipad? Of course, it will also kill the view of the majestic Lalitha Mahal Palace. Is there a long-term hidden agenda here to move the helipad later and take over the land in front of Lalitha Mahal Palace? After all, many attempts have been made before to take over this land. Anything is possible these days.

Also on the same day, there was another report of a new tourist-friendly taxi and auto service to be started called Mythri. The theme is Explore Mysore Safely. And reportedly, photos of tourist spots will be pasted inside these vehicles to give them a nice interior! And these vehicles will be under the district administration.

First, a tourist must feel safe in any part of the main city area and not just inside a taxi. Second, how nice can the interiors be when you are overwhelmed with a collage of photos? And finally, is it the job of the government to run a taxi service? Why can’t the gov-ernment encourage the ‘Tongawallahs’ instead? After all, they are part of our heritage and history. Since Mysore’s main tourist destinations are all very close by to each other, Tongas make a unique ride.

Of course, you can have taxis too but may be it would be better to encourage private travel and taxi companies to compete against each other for the clean and safest taxis. The government’s role must be in regulation not in business participation.

By the way, indeed tourists need safe taxis, but then they also need to piss. So can we provide clean usable toilets first? No matter how beautiful a taxi is, if the roads are bad it is never safe.

It seems like our government lacks an international mindset and a sense of aesthetics and sophistication when it comes to modeling an international tourist destination, or anything else for that matter. All we do is make ‘mini’ and ‘semi’ of everything that’s grand and great abroad — mini-Mysore Eye, mini-Disney Land, mini-roads, mini-trains, mini-malls and all are semi-hearted, semi-researched, semi-planned and semi-complete.

Unfortunately this is not seen just in the government projects. Didn’t the flamboyant Vijay Mallya build a mini-Empire State building? How shameful is that? That one of India’s richest, well-travelled and flam-boyant tycoon could only envisage and build in the 2008 a ‘mini’ of what the Americans built eight decades earlier in 1931.

Yes we do appreciate the enthusiasm of our leaders and officers but enthusiasm alone is not enough. Sense of appropriateness and creative vision are the keys.

Suddenly there seems to be an increase in whimsical pet projects in the garb of being grand ones. Slowly our Mysore city is being littered with half-completed pet projects. Mysore city is turning into Eyesore City.

He speaks about utilizing KEA grounds for promoting heritage park, has he forgotten on the traffic aspect? Come dasara the whole of KEA is jam packed with vehicles having no much space to move around the palace.

That heritage park proposed near lalithamahal would not affect the heritage status of lalithamahal at any cost provided height restrictions are in place around the palace. After all it is simply lying idle with weeds and illegal activities on.It is time to make the best use of that land by promoting green and heritage along side.

BANGALORE: The state Cabinet, which met here on Thursday, has given the administrative approval to the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) for Mysore, Bangalore and HubliDharwad cities, Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya informed.Addressing reporters after the meeting, Dr Acharya said the state Cabinet approved the BRTS to be built in three cities of the state at a cost of over `1,173 crore. He said BRTS is expected to substantially solve the traffic problems of the emerging cities and added that Mysore will get the lion's share of the project where over 160km length of dedicated track for buses would be built followed by 30km lengths each in Bangalore and HubliDharwad.Informing that the system was functioning successfully in over 100 countries, he said it would also help save time and fuel substantially. "The gestation period to recover the cost would be around 4 to 5 years after the project is commissioned," he said. The BRTS envisages lanes for highcapacity buses. They are said to boast the punctuality and capacity of trains but at a lower cost.

Mysore to be Sister City of Cincinnati

The cultural capital is joining a league of international cities that will have cultural ties with each other.

Mysore will be a sister city of Cincinnati, a global business center in US, allowing economical and cultural exchange between the tourist hub and the business powerhouse. Mysore MP Adagooru H Vishwanath will ink the pact with mayor of the US city, Mark Mallory, on July 11 at Cincinnati.

Mysore is the eight sister city of Cincinnati which will allow people to people contact directly. As part of its International Sister City program, which was created with a mission to promote mutual understanding between cities, Cincinnati has singed the pact with some of the oldest cities in the world like Munich in Germany, Liuzhou of China and Nancy of France. For the record, Liuzhou has a history of more than 2,100 years as the city was founded in 111 BC while Nancy's earliest signs of human settlement in the area date back to 800 BC. Munich is believed to have been founded in 1158. Interestingly, many of Cincinnati's sister cities are settled either on the banks of the rivers or close to a river.

The MP said on Wednesday that he'll invite the Cincinnati mayor to the Dasara. That will be a good occasion for the people to people contact, he told reporters. Though the corporation commissioner M R Ravi was to be part of the delegation, urban development minister Suresh Kumar has not approved the tour plan owing to bar on the foreign visits by officials and elected representatives, the MP stated. US ambassador Nirupama Rao is attending the event. According to the MP, Rao called him requesting him to attend the signing.

For the record, Cincinnati has a population of 2,96,943 according to the 2010 census and is Ohio's third-largest city. In the early 19th century, Cincinnati was the first American boomtown and developed initially without as much influence from immigration. Since 20 years, it has built friendship and relationship with seven sister cities across the globe.

The agreement allows fostering relationship between the two cities with student exchange programs, study abroad programs and service learning programs. Establish of collaborative relationships with universities, colleges and vocational institutions is also on the cards. The signing is a culmination of several years of effort by Mysoreans including activist Bhamy and was promoted by former corporation commissioner K S Raykar.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/Mysore-to-be-Sister-City-of-Cincinnati/articleshow/14676340.cms

SSI units allotted land near Nanjangud

It is a fallout of the Regional Business Development Summit

Nearly 35 small-scale industrial units have been allotted land at Kadakola near Nanjangud to give a fillip to entrepreneurs.

It is a fallout of the Mysore Regional Business Development Summit in May, which was organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and some government agencies. Though all participants had not sought land, a majority of them signed memorandums of understanding with the organisers.

Nearly 25 per cent of allotments are for entrepreneurs from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and the size of plots varies from quarter of an acre to nearly two acres.

Suresh Kumar Jain, general secretary, Mysore Industries Association, told The Hindu that SSI units were the focus of the summit.

A majority of them are expected to be general engineering firms. The allotment was supposed to take place last month, but it was put off owing to the Legislative Council elections.

The relatively early allotment — within three months after the summit — was made possible due to the availability of land at Kadakola.

Sudhakar Shetty, president, MCCI, said the land was acquired many years ago and had been developed by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

He said senior officials, including the managing director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra, visited Mysore this week and reviewed the proposals with the MCCI. Mr. Shetty said they were keen to support local entrepreneurs and would clear the requests for land allotment. “We have urged the authorities to prefer entrepreneurs who have signed MoUs at the summit and speed up the process,” he added.

As a sequel to the visit, the MCCI will now write to entrepreneurs who signed MoUs to submit a detailed project report for scrutiny .

Mr. Shetty said the KIADB had about 1,600 acres of land in and around Nanjangud, of which 250 acres had been developed for setting up industrial units.

“While 440 MoUs have been signed for Mysore, envisaging an investment of nearly Rs. 9,000 crore, it would be a fallacy to expect that all of them will materialise. However, even if 40 per cent of them get concrete shape, the summit could be deemed a success,” he added.

Mr. Shetty and Mr. Jain agreed that land allotment held the key to lure more investors, but it was going to be difficult in the coming days as there is growing aversion to acquiring agricultural land and converting them for non-agricultural purposes.

Meanwhile, a review meeting will be held in 15 days to analyse the pace of implementation of the proposals.

However, industrialists in Mysore are peeved by the frequent dislocation in governance and have expressed their ire at politics taking precedence over administration. It was pointed out that a majority of the promises held out at the summit were doled out by politicians who are now struggling to retain power.

Nearly 25 p.c. of allotments are for entrepreneurs from SCs and STs

18 months more for double track

Mysore, Jul 7, 2012, DHNS :
New trains to Chamarajanagar, Shravanabelagola, Sainagar Shirdi

The demand for a double track between Mysore and Bangalore remains a distant mirage, if you go by the words of Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa.

In the city to flag off three trains from Mysore to Chamarajanagar, Shravanabelagola and Sainagar Shirdi, Muniyappa said the project could take at least one-and-half years more.

However, if the state government hands over land in Mandya, Maddur and Srirangapatna, the work of electrification and doubling could be completed within six months, he added.

Even as people are wondering if the double track would ever be completed, Muniyappa said the survey on bullet trains is on and a decision would be taken based on viability.

The factors being considered is less fare compared to flights, but the bullet train should reach faster.

Upgradation of workshop

Muniyappa announced that funds for upgradation of the railway workshop would be allocated during the next budget. He said last year the funds were released to Hubli and in the following year, Mysore would be provided funds for upgradation.

Responding to a request by MP R Dhruvanarayan on railway track between Bangalore and Satyamangalam, he said the project wasn’t taken up due to environmental issues.

Instead, railways is working on constructing track Bangalore to Chamarajanagar passing through Malavalli and Kollegal. The project is in the planning stage and work would be taken up soon after the approval is given.

With trains running to Shravanabelagola via Hassan, people from Mangalore can directly head to Shravanabelagola instead of taking the Arsikere train, he observed.

On putting Kodagu on the rail map, Muniyappa said survey has been completed on laying track up to Kushalnagar. The proposal has been sent to planning commission for approval, he added.

Work on the Bangalore-Shravanabelagola line would start soon. State government has to transfer land in few areas between Bellur and Hirisave. Railway officials and chief secretary have held meetings to resolve the issues, he said.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPAL SECY. INSPECTS JNNURM WORKS

Urban Development Principal Secretary P.N. Sreenivasachari this morning inspected the works underway in city being executed under JNNURM, CM's Rs. 100 cr. Grant and Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=32770&type=news

Taj Mahal, Mysore Palace among 98 sites to be made hygiene-friendly

With an aim of doubling the visitor count, the Tourism Ministry has decided to provide clean and hygienic environment at 98 prominent tourist sites including Taj Mahal, Dal Lake, Red Fort and India Gate.

"Currently there are about six million foreign tourists coming to the country and our aim is to increase it to 12 million," Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said, adding "For this we have to provide a hygienic environment around tourist destinations of the country".

Round-the-clock garbage clearance, maintenance of parking lots and toilets and proper signages at the tourist complex are some of the steps to be carried out under the Clean India campaign launched by the ministry.

"We are seeking the involvement of corporates, PSUs and NGOs in the campaign as the project will be carried out in the PPP model," Sahai said.

The campaign in sync with the 12th Five Year Plan has twin objectives-- increase tourist arrivals to the country and improve quality of services in and around tourist destinations across the country.

There are about 14 tourist sites in the capital including India Gate, Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Lotus Temple, Jantar Mantar, Rajghat, Purana Qila and Safdarjung Tomb which have been selected to be covered under the project.

Besides Konrak, Charminar, Kovalam Beach, Mysore Palace, Golkonda Fort, Ajanta Caves and Mahabodhi Temple, Har ki Pauri, Hawa Mahal are among the 98 chosen destinations.

Clean India campaign is a multi-pronged action and comprehensive strategy to ensure an acceptable level of cleanliness and hygiene practices at tourists destination for an inclusive and sustainable development of tourism through ownership and involvement of private and public sector stakeholders.

"The initiative aims to create a collective persuasion, education, sensitization, training, demonstration, regulation and involvement of every individual," said a senior Tourism Ministry official involved with the project.http://www.deccanherald.com/content/262706/taj-mahal-mysore-palace-among.html

Can any one clarify the difference between RoI & EoI?

Can any one clarify the difference between RoI & EoI?

I am also new to RoI/EoI. Here is the gist of information I collected from web.

In the first stage you can go for RoI. In the next stage go for EoI. And finally MOU. You have the option of signing MOU directly if you have all details of the project. (Of course, government projects always follow the route of bidding/tender with RFP/RFT/RFQs.) By signing EoI you are requesting for help to understand the project further. If you don't have much idea on the project then you can start with a RoI. The bidder (here the state government) will help you with informations related to project on RoI/EoIs.

So MOU means project is in advanced stage of agreement. EoI/RoI means you are still studying the project feasibility & requirements. RoI means you are at starting stage of understanding of the project.

Registration of Interest (EoI)

A Registration of Interest can be used to determine which organisations would like to register to be part of a procurement process. Information in a clear template (provided), and limited to a few pages, is all that should be required from respondents. -- in business (http://www.in-business.com.au/magazine/issue-23/How+to+Prepare+or+Respond+to+an+RFI,+EOI,+RFP,+RFT+etc+-+and+What+is+the+Difference%3F/1123)

A Registration (or Expression) of Interest. ROI/EOI is a notification from potential suppliers that they are interested in providing the goods and services. It is lodged in response to the agency’s open request for ROIs/EOIs. ROIs/EOIs are used for shortlisting suppliers from which Requests for Proposal (RFPs) or Requests for Tender (RFTs) will normally be invited. -- An Introduction to public sector procurement (http://www.icn.govt.nz/contentimages/ict%20procurement%20-%20booklet%201.pdf)

Expression of Interest (EoI)

Expression of Interest, a business expression indicating an intent to bid - wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EOI).

An EOI is very similar (to RoI), however more detail may be requested in an EOI as it is a bit more that just registering - respondents are able to express their views and capabilities. Again a template should be provided and respondents should not be expected to provide volumes of information. -- in business (http://www.in-business.com.au/magazine/issue-23/How+to+Prepare+or+Respond+to+an+RFI,+EOI,+RFP,+RFT+etc+-+and+What+is+the+Difference%3F/1123)

Calls for Expression of Interest (EOI) are used mainly when the requesting company does not have a solid idea on the type of product or service required. The company releasing the EOI may have a high level understanding of their business problem or requirements, or type of product they require, but they are unsure of the market's ability or desire to meet their need. The company releasing the EOI may need to collect some additional information before they are able to make some procurement decisions. -- read more on EzineArticles.com (http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Differences-Between-Expressions-of-Interest-(EOI),-Request-For-Proposals-(RFP)-And-Tenders-(RFT)&id=2320788)

The purpose of signing EOI is to understand the investment requirement and help shape your project requirements with the guidance of KUM's experienced team. -- read more on Advantage Karnataka (http://www.advantagekarnataka.com/investment-information/how-to-invest.php).

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is a document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action. It is often used in cases where parties either do not imply a legal commitment or in situations where the parties cannot create a legally enforceable agreement. It is a more formal alternative to a gentlemen's agreement. -- read more on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorandum_of_understanding)

A mutually agreed written document between parties that confirms their shared understanding of, and commitment to, principles and objectives in the document. It is not intended to be a binding or legally enforceable agreement. It usually does not involve an exchange of funds for services but sets out agreed protocols or ways and behaviours of working. -- An Introduction to public sector procurement (http://www.icn.govt.nz/contentimages/ict%20procurement%20-%20booklet%201.pdf)

Thank you for krishnamoorthy for detailed explanation. This means, those that have signed MoU with GoK are sure to execute to project right?

But I still get puzzled with Gopalan's SeZ plans which was approved and MoU was signed during GIM-2010. Still it yet to see the light and already has come back to the list of approvals again in GiM 2012.

Same with JK and Falcon tires projects.

Can anyone throw some light on this?

There is no surety if MOUs do not include legally binding clauses.

BF Utilities looks good to target Rs 550 for short term: AK Prabhakar
Source: IRIS (10-JUL-12)

BF Utilities (BFUL) is a part of USD 2.4 billion Kalyani Group. BFUL earlier operated in two business segments - Infrastructure Business and Investment Business. So far the company has operated projects- Nandi infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) (74.5% holding) and BMIC - Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project.

The key asset for the company is the project BMIC (Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project) - A 164km tolled expressway connecting the cities Bangalore and Mysore. It includes a peripheral road in Bangalore, 5 New Townships along the Expressway (the first Section A involves 7,290 acres land), a Town Planning Authority status, and a Concession period for the toll of 40 years. The BMIC is 75% owned by BF utilities. It has a single planning authority - Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Area Planning Authority (BMICAPA) for the entire project.

AK Prabhakar, senior vice president - equity research, Anand Rathi Securities said, ``The project is partly operational with the rest held up due to pending handover of land by the government of Karnataka. This high potential project has been stuck for over a decade due to land handover issues, and the firm is making losses. However recent reports indicate that now it may be close to resolving the issue as the Supreme Court has asked Karnataka to handover the Nandi project land to the company. PE fund raising plans are also in discussion who will invest in the development in the project.``

``This project has immense potential and is also very important for the growth of the South Bangalore and Mysore. Seeing the judgment the major trigger for the stock would be the handing over of the land and progress on the project going forward. Much of the value is dependent upon a successful handover of committed lands, followed by execution, commissioning, launch and success of sub-projects. This would further help the company to create value for itself as well the shareholders. This would further help the stock to re- rate.``
