engineer.akash April 14th, 2010, 12:18 PM Mysore, Apr. 14 (KK&DM)- The city is all set to restore some of its past glory with the Corporation now making an attempt to bring back horse-drawn carriages (sarot) which ruled the streets during the days of Maharajas.
The Mysore City Corporation which has allotted Rs. 50 lakh in this year's budget for bringing the sarot ride back on the streets as part of retaining the city's traditional heritage, called a meeting of tongawallahs at the Corporation old Hall yesterday to elicit their opinion in this regard.
The meeting, chaired by JNNURM Superintending Engineer B.K. Suresh Babu, was attended by former Mayor Ayub Khan, Corporation and Bank officials along with the tongawallahs.
The Corporation has mooted distribution of sarots to willing tongawallahs. These tongawallahs will be given an opportunity to take the tourists on carriage ride in the heritage zone around the City Palace, besides providing a sarot ride package to various heritage buildings and places around the city like Zoo, KRS, Srirangapatna etc.
The City Corporation itself will distribute carriages to select tongawallahs. While half the expenses will be borne by the Corporation, the rest have to be borne by the tongawallahs themselves.
The Corporation will help economically weak tongawallahs in securing financial aid from Vijaya Bank. They will have to repay the loan in installments. The entire project will be managed by Tourism Department.
Suresh Babu explained to the tongawallahs that the City Corporation will have its say in the design of carriages. Apart from carriages, they will be provided Kathiawari and Marwar breed horses which are strong enough for drawing the carriage. The horses too are included in this loan package, he added.
Ayub Khan, saying that Mysore will regain its past heritage with the introduction of these carriages, added that the project will go a long way in bettering the lives of tongawallahs as they can earn Rs. 600 to Rs. 800 a day with lakhs of tourists visiting the city every month.
The project was forcefully included in Corporation budget as it would better the lives of tongawallahs, he said.
The Corporation, apart from providing carriages to tongawallahs, has envisaged entering into a tie up with several star hotels of the city including Lalith Mahal for taking tourists on carriage ride throughout the year.
With this, the carriages which used to come into the open only during Dasara, will now be available all through the year. Also a blue print on forming a network of carriages is being prepared.
Tourism Department Dy. Director Jayaram, who also attended the meet, said that a heritage track will be built for carriage ride under the JNNURM project.
Heritage Committee's Madhukar, Tonga Association President Pasha and others were part of the meeting.

i am not sure whether it is good idea. there are many issues in this. like:
1. animal rights (may sound cliche, but it cant be ignored)
2. people may not prefer tonga because of it's speed.
3. this is very important. Tonga will increase traffic congestion. tonga has less maneuvrability, occupies more space and travels at a lesser speed. this will decreasee the over all efficiency of the traffic. in traffic engineering this is measured in terms of passenger car equivalent(PCE) of a vehicle. Tongas in large numbers in an urban transit system will drastically reduce it's efficiency.
ofcourse, if u use these tongas only in small numbers in heritage areas, this shouldn't cause any major problems.

Your points seem valid,Mysore CBD area is quite spacious, roads in and around the palace area are broad. In general Roads in Mysore are broad. Thanks to the Maharajas.
They(MCC) plan to have cycle tracks which I feel is a very good move to reduce traffic congestion and check air quality as well.

MYSORE: Move over Bangalore. It is Mysoreans who will have the honour of possessing unique identification number (UID) ahead of the IT City in Karnataka.
By the end of the year the Unique Identification Authority of India plans to complete the exercise of issuing the UID to every resident in Mysore district. The process of allotting the UID will start in August and it will be through by December. The government is aiming to cover Mysore and Tumkur districts first in the state, the assistant director general from the authority K K Sharma said on Wednesday. "We should be able to do it," he stated.
Running against the December deadline, the district administration, which is partnering with the authority in its pilot project, has started collecting the data including photographs and finger prints. The field trials are to see how the system put in place by the authority is working at the ground level. The drive billed as a proof of concept will be taken to seven villages in Mysore rural from Thursday where the villagers will be photographed and their fingerprints scanned using biometric readers. In all, some 20,000 samples are sought to be collected which will be used to see how the system is working. The process of collection of samples will be taken up in two phases. It is estimated that one person requires 10 minutes to be done with the process, which the officials believe will come down as the process is standardized.
The drive will move to Varuna, Chikkahalli in Mysore taluk, Hadinaaru in Nanjangud, Hunsur's Gavadagere, Thippur in Krishnarajnagar and Hommaragalli in hilly terrain of Heggadadevanakote taluk between Monday and May 4. The sample size is sought to be collected from across the society including agricultural labourers to see how the biometric system works with them. Besides Karnataka, such a drive is taken up in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.

The population of the city is projected to cross the one-million mark
Government employees who are looking forward to an enhanced HRA may be left disappointed
Number of metropolitan cities expected to rise from 35 to 50 based on data of Census 2011
MYSORE: Is the cultural capital of Karnataka set to break into the list of metropolitan cities of India based on its population figures?
The question assumes significance in view of Census 2011 which will commence from April 15. Mysore, the population of which was pegged at 7.10 lakh in the Census 2001, has been projected to cross the 10 lakh or the one-million mark.
The projected population figure is based on the population growth index of 22.2 per cent for Mysore, according to Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan.
Additional benefits
If Census 2011 does establish Mysore's population at one million, then it will join 35 other such cities in India which have the “metropolitan” tag and can expect to reap a slew of additional benefits.
A few more cities and towns in the State, the population of which are hovering around the one-million mark, may also enter the revised list.
Government Order
But the Union government and State government employees who are looking forward to an enhanced House Rent Allowance (HRA) are in for a disappointment. For, a Government Order has classified cities under Groups A to E based on the population figures.
Accordingly, cities with a population of 16 lakh and above have been graded A with a sanctioned HRA of 20 per cent of the basic pay, while cities with a population of 8 lakh to 16 lakh have been categorised as B1 cities while B2 cities have a population between 4 lakh and 8 lakh with a sanctioned HRA rate of 15 per cent.
Cities graded as C have a population ranging from 50,000 to 4 lakh with an HRA of 9 per cent while D cities have a population ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 with an HRA of 6 per cent. Urban centres with a population less than 25,000 are classified under E category with an HRA of 5 per cent.
If the above GO issued in 1999 continues to be the yardstick for calculating the HRA, government employees in Mysore and other cities in the State may not benefit even if the city is re-classified under B1 category, up from its present status of a B2 city.
More funding
However, the city can expect additional funding if it receives the “metropolitan” tag. The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, for instance has proposed establishing and developing satellite townships to act as a counter-magnet in cities with one million-plus population.
The Constitution also mandates the formation of a Metropolitan Planning Committee to prepare a draft development plan for the metropolitan area.
The Government anticipates the number of metropolitan cities to increase from 35 to 50 based on the projected population of Census 2011, which means renewed focus on urban infrastructure development.
The number of “metropolitan” cities with a population of over one million after the 1991 census was 23.
While the Mysore city population is expected to cross the one-million mark, the district population figures have been pegged at 30 lakh, while it was 26.4 lakh after Census 2001.

engineer.akash April 16th, 2010, 03:50 PM Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel assures KPCC delegation
New Delhi, Apr. 16 (MMJ& JP)- A Congress delegation led by Kpcc President R. V. Deshpande called on the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel here this morning and urged the Centre to commence aviation operations from Mysore Airport at Mandakalli at the earliest.
Leader of Opposition from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Siddharamaiah, Members of Parliament R. Dhruvanarayan (Chamarajanagar) and H. Viswanath (Mysore) were in the delegation.
Assuring the delegation that the Mysore airport will begin to function before May 20, he said that the Mangalore International Airport will also start its full-fledged operation by May 20.
Meanwhile, at an informal meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysore Zone, here in the City last evening at the CII office, Shaji Mathew of Infosys, who is also the Vice-Chairman of CII, Mysore, shared statistical data on the possible number of passengers based on inputs from 30 large and medium industries, 5 hotels and 5 travel agents.
T. Dinesh Kumar of CII told SOM that they were looking for daily flights to and from Mysore to the Bangalore International Airport that would in turn connect to Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi. CII had prepared a detailed questionnaire and that had been collated by Shaji Mathew of Infosys.
CII Mysore Zone had invited a team from Jet Airways from Bangalore to the meeting. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, Director of Mandakalli Airport and Dinesh Kumar told SOM that the Jet Airways were impressed and said, "We agree in principle."
Rajiv Gupta, who was also one of the participants of the CII meeting, said that he personally felt that Jet Airways would show a positive response and that the decision makers in the company would take a decision in a month or two. Gupta said that it would take a minimum of two to three months before the planes take off and land with passengers everyday. He said R. V. Deshpande would be able to convince Praful Patel. Deshpande's daughter is married to Praful Patel's son.
CII hopes to have a series of meetings with other major airlines in the very near future and a meeting with Kingfisher Airlines is slated to be held soon. Rajiv Gupta said that airlines have to come forward for Mandakalli airport to become a hub of activity.

MYSORE: There was abreeze of fresh air both in the official quarters and BJP circles on Saturday as urban development minister Suresh Kumar took up his new assignment.
As the new district in-charge minister arrived in the city for the first time, he remained focused on development of the city. He said he will not be a guest here, but never sought to wriggle out of the outsider tag unlike his predecessor Shobha Karandlaje.
The task master of the BJP, Suresh Kumar knows his challenges ahead-- both administratively and politically. "This is an important assignment as Mysore is a significant place. It is graduating into a metropolitan city, the place has so much of culture throbbing and tourists are milling here. Politically, we have some of the tall leaders including opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Mysore MP H Vishwanath hailing from the district. There is this concern that I should not be a guest visitor but attend to the problems," he said.
Asked how he will attend to the concern, the minister said: "Please try me before you judge me. There is this saying that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Just wait for two months."
Having tasked by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to take care of Mysore, the fast growing city after IT City, the minister from Bangalore sought cooperation from the elected representatives. While he is getting it from the opposition-- Congress leader and MLA H C Mahadevappa called him earlier in the day wishing him good luck-- there are some problems from his own party leaders, which he acknowledged but sought to be politically correct: "There will be feelings and opinions. But this is the job given to me by the CM. He did not wish to be drawn into it further except to say he has written to all legislators and MPs from the district seeking their cooperation.
Wanting to do his homework before he makes his next move, the minister said: "I know there are problems affecting the city's growth. JNNURM projects are not on track and MUDA is not functioning efficiently. There are lacunae in the MCC too. There is lot to be done. We as a team will do it. Time management and networking is the key."
On the music university's land row, he said he is aware of the problem and will take care of it. The BJP leaders were ecstatic as he came here and commenced his job after offering pooja at Chamundi hills. The city BJP chief Shivakumar and district BJP president Siddaraju were present.
BOX:
Planning and preparation for Dasara 2010 will start in a week's time. The flagship festival of Karnataka has made it to the top of the agenda of the district minister, who said he will initiate process to get ready in a week. We will chalk out the plan early and not during the festival season, he stated. Tourism sector is also getting its due with the minister attributing the city's economy to the tourist inflow.

The Mysore airport has handled nearly 150 chartered flights between April 2009 and March 2010.
MYSORE: A random sample survey conducted to estimate the passenger air traffic originating from Mysore has provided encouraging figures and could pave the way for early operation of commercial flights from the city.
The survey was conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysore chapter, and the information was elicited from a small section of representatives of small, medium and large industries in the city.
This is reckoned to be the first major effort to conduct such an exercise to generate statistical information.
Shaji Mathew, vice-chairman, CII, Mysore, told The Hindu that an informal meeting was conducted at the CII premises on Thursday, and was attended by stakeholders, including travel agents, industrialists and representatives from Jet Airways, who were impressed with the figures.
Mr. Mathew said that as per the response elicited from the representative group, the domestic passenger traffic originating from Mysore could not be less than 6,000 passengers a month. But this is reckoned to be a conservative estimate as the representative sample was small and the actual numbers could be higher.
A similar meeting is slated to be held with other leading airline operators in due course to convince them about the feasibility of launching commercial operations of flights from Mysore airport.
Mysore airport was upgraded and modernised at an estimated cost of Rs. 60 crore and has been awaiting official inauguration since September 15, 2009.
Though, the Airports Authority of India executed the works, the airline operators are reluctant to include Mysore in their flight plans, without which the Directorate General of Civil Aviation will not give the clearance to operate flights.
Meanwhile, the Mysore airport which is located at Mandakalli on the Mysore-Nanjangud Road is being regularly used by chartered flights and nearly 150 flights have been handled between April 2009 and March 2010. Though the frequency of chartered flights was low before the completion of the airport, their numbers have increased ever since the main terminal, air traffic control towers and other facilities were put in place. Given the delay in the launch of commercial operations, a stakeholders committee was constituted to bring pressure on the Government for early inauguration of the airport.
Despite the efforts, most airline operators are reluctant to operate flights in the absence of adequate information about the state of readiness of the Mysore airport as also statistics to ascertain commercial viability. But sources pointed out that the AAI ventured to take up the works only after ascertaining its commercial viability.
Apart from industrialists who may be looking for air connectivity to Mysore, the city also plays host to nearly 2.7 million tourists annually and there are plans to double this figure in the ensuing figures.
This, according to sources, would not only dispel fears of the commercial viability of Mysore airport but would also pave the way for the expansion of the airport to facilitate the landing of wide-bodied Boeing and Airbus aircrafts. The airport at present can handle only ATR aircrafts capable of short-haul flights.
Meanwhile, a delegation of senior Congress leaders met Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel in Delhi early this week and apprised him of the state of readiness of the Mysore airport in a bid to expedite its inauguration.

engineer.akash April 18th, 2010, 12:15 PM "Start works by May-June": Suresh Kumar
Mysore, Apr 18 (RK&DM)- District in-Charge Minister Suresh Kumar may be hoping to come up with a better Dasara than his predecessor this year if his meetings with the City Mayor Purushotham are anything to go by. He plans on starting pre-Dasara works by May-June itself.
Suresh Kumar, who arrived in the city yesterday, is believed to have discussed this with Purushotham, MLAs and other people’s representatives at the meeting at MMC&RI Platinum Jubilee Hall on JK Grounds yesterday.
Suresh Kumar obviously used the informal atmosphere of the meeting to draw out suggestions from the Mayor, MLAs and other Corporators. Suresh Kumar stressed on the need for holding a preliminary session to thrash out the various matters. He had said that the special quality of the Dasara cannot be sustained if everything was done in a hurried manner. Rains, particularly before and during Dasara, impede all preparatory work. He said that such work should be taken up well in advance from May-June itself, soon after getting the necessary grants from the Government.
One question that has been thrown so often at Suresh Kumar by the scribes following him is whether he can do justice to both Tumkur and Mysore, since he is the District in-Charge of both places. This question was once again thrown at him by scribes at the Interactive session at Pathrakarthara Bhavan yesterday.
Suresh Kumar deftly sidestepped by saying that it was the decision of the CM and that he accepted that responsibility. "I do not question his prerogative,"

engineer.akash April 21st, 2010, 03:07 PM Mysore, Apr. 21 (KMC)- Kukkarahalli lake in city will be getting a waste water treatment plant shortly to filter the sewage water entering the lake through an open drain on Mysore-Hunsur Road. Tenders have been invited for setting up a 2 MLD plant for which bidding will be held on Apr. 23, said K.M. Jayaramaiah, Convenor of Kukkarahalli Lake Protection Committee, in a press release issued here yesterday.
"The sewage water to the lake, coming from Paduvarahalli side contains phosphates, sulphates and other chemicals which encourage the growth of blue-green algae", Jayaramaiah said and added that the algae, after growing luxuriously, will perish emanating foul stench (the algae present in Kukkarahalli lake belongs to the Microcystis species, which on accumulating on the lake sides, die due to lack of nutrition and release hydrogen sulphate and other gases).
Hence it is essential that the waste water treatment plant be installed at the earliest, he added.

Bangalore, April 21, DH News Service:
The State government will collaborate with the British High Commission to take up green initiatives in the heritage city of Mysore.
Addressing a press conference in Bangalore after meeting the British Deputy High Commissioner Richard Hyde, Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said the commission would help the State adopt green building concepts in government and traditional buildings in Mysore.
The green initiatives include saving energy through adoption of solar systems, adoption of rainwater harvesting, minimising use of air-conditioners in government and private buildings, Suresh Kumar, who is also the District In Charge Minister for Mysore, said.
Expertise in this regard will be provided by the the UK Department for International Development to the Mysore City Corporation. Measures to reduce carbon emission would also be implemented.
The mode of collaboration and whether there would be any financial component is yet to be worked out, he said.
Suresh Kumar said a detailed blue print of the project would be finalised after discussion with the deputy commissioner and other district officials.
Revival of Mysore Tonga
The government also proposed to revive the famous Mysore Tonga (horse-drawn carts) by Dasara this year.
Mysore Tonga, one of the heritage symbols of the city, has been struggling to make its presence felt due to competition from autorickshaws and cabs.
The minister said the government was keen to revive tongas as the principal mode of transport around a two km radius at heritage sites like the Mysore Palace. There is also a proposal to declare a few pockets as chariot zones. However, a final decision is yet to be taken, he said.
Horse chariots are being used at heritage places in New York and Paris, he pointed out.

engineer.akash April 26th, 2010, 01:38 PM MYSORE-B’LORE DOUBLE TRACK TO BE READY IN 2 YEARS: RAILWAY BOARD CHAIRMAN
Mysore, Apr. 26 (KCU&RK)- "The doubling work of the railway track between Mysore and Bangalore would be completed within the next two years," said Railway Board Chairman S.S. Khurana here today.
Speaking to the media after laying the foundation stone for the Rs. 5 crore multi-functional complex beside the computerised reservation centre at the city Railway Station premises, Khurana observed that the doubling work was going on schedule from both Mysore and Bangalore ends. "However, at few places, land acquisition issues are still pending. The State Government, which had been apprised of the issue, has given an assurance that there will be no hitches," he said.
Referring to the betterment of Railway service, Khurana announced that gauge conversion work has been taken up on the Shimoga-Talagupa and the Dharwad - Belgaum lines.
"Also on the anvil is introduction of high speed trains between several stations including Bangalore-Chenniai for which the necessary modifications in the track will be taken up soon," he added.
Going around the passenger facilities in the City Railway Station, Khurana said he would upgrade them with subways, escalators and deluxe toilets.
When media persons sought his opinion on earmarking 50 per cent of jobs in the railways for the localities, Khurana stated that no such reservation clause existed.
However, he said norms existed for allowing the regional candidates to take up Board exams in local languages.
Multi-functional complex
The proposed complex will house medical shops, waiting halls, telephone booths and hotels with a good underground parking facility.
South Western Railway General Manager Kuldeep Chaturvedi, Divisional Railway Manager B.B. Verma, Chief Commercial Manager Dr. Anup Dayanand Sadhu and Railway Board Advisor Arunendrakumar were present.
Mayor’s stand
After the foundation-laying programme, Mayor Sandesh Swamy visited the spot. He told media persons that the assigned place for the complex was a no man’s land not belonging to anyone as per records. "Being close to the circle with Babu Jagajivan Ram’s statue, the place was used for holding public functions. All around are heritage structures. We will speak to the Railway officials before they take up the work. If necessary, legal steps would be initiated to stall the process," Swamy said.

Traffic diverted
In view of these works, the following alternative routes for traffic movement have been denoted by the City Police:

engineer.akash May 3rd, 2010, 01:14 PM Mysore to be on air map soon
By Team Mangalorean Bangalore
Mysore May 3, 2010: The commercial operations from the much-awaited upgraded Mysore Mandakali airport are expected to commence before May 20, even though it got ready in September last year.
The uncertainty over the operations of flights by private or state-operated airlines will finally come to reality as airlines have agreed to start operations and sought concessions in terms of taxes (operation) from the Karnataka Government.
Mysore MP and former minister A H Vishwanath, who met Union Aviation minister Praful Patel along with Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Siddaramiah and KPCC President R V Desphande recently at New Delhi, appraised the situation and urged him to declare open the completed Mysore Airport.
Mr Vishwanath said that due to economic slowdown which badly hit airline, private players have not shown any interest. However, the situation has changed and now everything was ready for commencing flight operations. The formal function is expected to be held in the second week of this month, he added. Though the State Government officials here maintained that they were awaiting clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to commence commercial flights, other sources maintained that obtaining clearance from DGCA was a secondary issue. Securing clearance will be a matter of time as the airport meets the stipulated standards and safety parameters.
DGCA inspection for clearance will take place once the airline operators announce their flight schedules without which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will not post its personnel for manning the airport. What will the AAI staff do without any flights operating from the city, Mr Viswanathan pointed out.
It was pointed out that Mysore receives around 2.7 million tourists throughout the year. The fact that the airport was ready to handle traffic can be gauged from the number of chartered flights that were frequently using the facility. During the just-concluded TED conference, the authorities here handled nearly eight flights on a single day, according to the AAI officials.

STATUS OF FOUR-LANING MYSORE-N'GUD ROAD
Sir,
With reference to the news item, 'Mysore-N'gud four-lane Road: National Highway Authority Refuses' (SOM dated April 21), I have checked with the officials to ascertain the actual status regarding four-laning and the facts are as follows:
• NH 212 passing through Nanjangud up to State border with Kerala, a length of 150 km is to be developed as a four-lane road.
• A Special Cell set up by the Government of Karnataka handles this project among many others.
• Feasibility study including Detailed Project Reports (DPR) are already with the Cell for technical evaluation.
• Once the evaluation is completed, firms will be asked to indicate their financial bids for the project.
• After a decision is taken the firm chosen for work will enter into contract agreement to start the work.
• This project is taken under Public-Private-Participation and will be executed under Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme and the contractor would invest his financial resources.
• The contractor will get his investment back over a period of time through levying toll for which certain guidelines exist in the Ministry. Normally, there will be a toll structure every 50 km. Ministry of Transport will act as a facilitator.
Hope, the above details will put the issue in proper perspective and remove any doubts that National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is refusing four-laning the road.

engineer.akash May 4th, 2010, 08:09 PM Vani Vilas Market, Mandi Market slipping into history
MYSORE: Two of the city's landmarks-- Vani Vilas Market and Mandi Market --- are slipping into history pages with the MCC moving in to demolish them and build new facilities.
The MCC, which was planning to demolish these two marketplaces that came up during the Maharaja's reign owing to exposure of the European ways of life, is moving in to construct new buildings at these places. Mayor Sandesh Swamy made a tour of the two markets on Tuesday and discussed the issue with the officials.
The idea is to pull down the two single-storey buildings which are some 80 years and go in for multi-storied building with additional facilities extended to the public. It is also planned to have parking lots.
The proposal to raze the two monuments and construct new markets is pending with the standing committees on works. "I am pursuing it and we will go ahead," Swamy told The Times of India. The new structures will retain the vintage nature, he stated.
According to the mayor, the two buildings have outlived their utility and are not fit for occupation. "We are planning to add new facilities at the new structures, including parking lots to reduce pressure on roads," he stated.
Meanwhile, he also visited 100-year-old Devaraja Market, which is also facing crisis owing to its age. Swamy said they are now planning to retain the shops on the outer periphery of the building but change the design. It is in bad shape and need intervention, he pointed out. Lansdowne Building, another landmark, is also proposed to be repaired.

On the tourist map:The projected tourism traffic in Mysore is projected to be 5 million
MYSORE: The Palace Board that manages the Amba Vilas Palace, which drives the wheels of Mysore's tourism industry, will hire professional consultants to attract more tourists to the heritage building.
Deputy Commissioner and Palace Board member secretary P. Manivannan told The Hindu that an Expression of Interest had been finalised and the board would soon take out an advertisement seeking ideas and plans from consultants to double the tourist inflow from 2.7 million to 5 million in the next few years.
No heritage dilution
Board deputy director P.V. Avaradhi said the idea was to enrich the ambience, without diluting the palace's heritage.
The board would only invite suggestions on the provision of amenities and increasing the circulation area without impinging on the architecture of the palace. The Expression of Interest to invite consultants for the project will be issued in the next few days, said Mr. Avaradhi.
Study, analysis
However, the invitation would only be the first step. Once a consultant was appointed, he/she would be given adequate time to study and analyse the tourism potential, after which all the details would have to worked out.
The final report has to be critically studied and analysed before it was accorded administrative approval. Then an implementing agency would have to be identified.
The Department of Tourism is already working on a blueprint to improve the palace premises by introducing period lamps, seats and better illumination of the fort.
Under JNNURM
A Rs.39.45 crore project to spruce up the palace premises has been approved under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), and the State Government will chip in Rs.31.56 crore for the same.
The Department of Tourism has already contributed 10 per cent of this sum i.e., Rs. 3.94 crore. A heritage trail covering other historical monuments around the palace will also be developed: these will include the Town Hall, the Dufferin Clock Tower, Chamarajendra Circle, K.R. Circle, Devaraja Market, K.R. Hospital, Mysore Medical College, Ayurvedic College and Chamarajendra Technical Institute.
Heritage style
Heritage-style barricades and lamp posts with colourful signage have also been planned.
Officials said that based on trends in the last five years, the projected tourism traffic is 5 million by 2020 or earlier.
But this has to be supported by infrastructure development to cope with the rush, while the monument and its surroundings need to be refurbished to make them more tourist friendly.

Mysore, May 5 (KCU&KK)- As part of the joint venture of the Indian Government and Great Britain to promote Eco-City concept in the country, British Deputy High Commissioner Richard Hyde visited city today and obtained information on developing Mysore as Eco-City.
The joint venture has chosen Mysore as the first city to launch the project on an experimental basis in the State.
Richard Hyde held a meeting with senior officials at Deputy Commissioner’s office today being attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, MUDA Commissioner P.C. Jayanna, Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raikar and Assistant Commissioner Bharathi.
He obtained comprehensive details of various tourist destinations and heritage structures in city to evolve a ground plan to make the city greener and thus promote eco-tourism.
The British Deputy High Commissioner later visited Mysore Palace, Zoo, Lalitha Mahal Palace, St. Philomena’s Church and Chamundi Hill to be followed by Brindavan Gardens at KRS. He took stock of the topography of the place and environment characteristics for the Eco-City Project. Richard was very much impressed by the heritage tonga stationed near the Palace and sought details of the heritage horse-drawn carriage. He told the waiting press persons that he would be visiting the city often to collect information for the project. He seemed satisfied with the selection of the city for the pilot scheme in the State. Incidentally, Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh is also being developed under the project as Master City and Mysore would follow suit.
Richard will be visiting Jayapura in the taluk tomorrow to participate in the annual day of Raleighs, an NGO. He will visit various heritage structures in city.
'One of the best Zoos in the country'
Mysore, May 5- "One of the best zoos in the country" was the comment that the British Deputy High Commissioner Richard Hyde made to the City Zoo officials as he went around the Zoo this morning.
According to Zoo Deputy Director Belliappa, Richard Hyde took keen interest in the inmates of the Zoo, the quarantine section and the way food for the animals was being prepared in the Zoo kitchen.

engineer.akash May 5th, 2010, 08:00 PM Commercial flights by June-end
H M Aravind, TNN, May 5, 2010, 09.55pm IST
MYSORE: The Mysore airport will get off from the tarmac but will have to wait for some more time to get commercial flights.
The commercial operation of the facility upgraded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) could be started by June-end with a private airliner set to approach the directorate-general of civil aviation (DGCA) with flight plan. As the facility is set for formal inauguration in mid-May, the air operator is working on the routes and scanning the availability of its fleet of mid-sized aircrafts to operate to Tier-II city, sources told The Times of India.
The facility will be launched this time and the commercial operations will start sometime later, they explained. The operator has one ATR-72 aircraft and procuring two more by August. Following the projection of air traffic, the operator has some plans. It can approach the DGCA with flight plan by weekend, they stated. Once it is done, the DGCA team will visit and grant permission. The commercial operations will start later, may be by early June. That should not be a problem, sources explained.
Meanwhile, in view of the poll code in force toll May 18, the district administration has written to State Election Commission seeking its permission to launch the facility located at Mandakalli. It has accorded its in-principle go-ahead, a senior official stated. The AAI approached the state government seeking its response on the launch of the facility in mid-May and the district administration approached the SEC. The permission was accorded as the polling will be through on May 12 and it will not impact the poll process, the official said. It will not affect even the counting scheduled on May 17, he pointed out.
When opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Mysore MP H Vishwanath met Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel to discuss the launch of the workable airport, the minister was enthusiastic for early inauguration but the poll code came in the way. Now, the state government has addressed it getting the SEC's nod.

engineer.akash May 5th, 2010, 08:22 PM Mysore airport launch on May 15
Bangalore, May 5, DHNS:
The airport in Mysore will be inaugurated on May 15. However, there is no confirmation with regard to the flight services commencing on the same day. The airport is being inaugurated for the second time.
The airport launched its operations during Dasara celebrations last year. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, on Wednesday, informed the media persons that Union Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel had agreed to inaugurate the airport.
When questioned about the aviation companies that have come forward to offer flight services, the chief minister said the talks were on.
Principal Secretary for Infrastructure Development V Madhu said that Kingfisher, Air India and a few others had evinced interest in offering services from Mysore. Many seemed keen on providing flight services from Mysore to Mumbai, Delhi and other cities in the country.

H M Aravind, TNN, May 9, 2010, 10.35pm IST
MYSORE: Did you know that Mysore celebrated the golden jubilee of Royal Proclamation of 1858 and held durbars, and that special services were conducted at places of worship throughout the erstwhile Mysore State when King Edward VII, the emperor of India, died?
Mysore's tryst with the British rule dates back to decades extending it a feature that is hallmark of some of the Indian cities. While some monuments and arterial roads mark its association -- the Oriental Research Institute building is a classic example. It was constructed to mark 50 years of the rule by Queen Victoria in 1887-- the footprints of intangible heritage are found in the pages of history. The 50th anniversary celebration of the Royal Proclamation was held on November 2, 1908 in the state. The day was observed as a holiday and durbars were held at all district headquarters.
For the record, it is through the Royal Proclamation of 1858 that the political authority and management of India was transferred to the rulers of Britain. On November 1, the proclamation was issued that allowed the reign of the Indian government by the Queen and it was read throughout India. Fifty years later, Mysore administrators observed the day declaring a holiday on November 2, when the proclamation was read to people in English and vernaculars, according to records. The poor were given food and clothes too. Sports and other cultural activities marked the event at schools.
Two years later when the King Edward VII, the emperor of India, died on May 6, 1910, the Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar directed all public offices, courts and schools in the state to be closed for five days. The flags were ordered to be hoisted half mast. A gun salute was paid to him as a mark of respect at Mysore and Bangalore palaces. History has it that a gun salute included 68 firings corresponding to the emperor's age. May 20 was observed as a general mourning across the state when his last rites were carried out. Special services were conducted in religious institutions. The King of United Kingdom was the emperor of India from January 22, 1901.
Interestingly, Mysore also marked the proclamation of the new emperor of India, which was communicated to the people of Mysore on the same day when it was proclaimed on May 9, 1910. A 101 gun salute was also paid to mark the event.

engineer.akash May 13th, 2010, 12:38 AM Prestige Group to invest up to Rs 1,800-cr in six new malls
PTI
Sunday, May 9, 2010 16:56 IST
Mumbai: Bangalore-based real estate giant, the Prestige Group, plans to invest around Rs 1,500-1,800-crore to develop six malls, scheduled to be operational by 2013.
Of these six, the company will construct four malls in a joint venture with Singapore-based CapitaMalls Asia.
"We are planning to develop six projects by 2013 at an investment of Rs 250-300-crore per mall. Of these, four projects are in a joint venture with Singapore-based CapitaMalls. With this, the total number of our malls will increase to nine by 2013," Prestige Group's CEO, S Raghunandhan, told PTI here.
Fifty per cent of the funding would be from internal accruals and the rest through a mix of debt and investments from the JV partner, he said.
The new malls would be coming up in Hyderabad, Kochi, Mangalore, Bangalore, Mysore and Shantiniketan, a township developed by the group near Bangalore.
Currently, the group has two malls in Bangalore -- Forum at Koramangala and True Value Mall in Whitefield, which is a
discount mall with anchors such as Pantaloons, Tommy Hilfiger,
Megamart, Esprit and Louis Vuitton having their factory outlets.
The Group's third mall, Forum Vijaya, will be opened by mid-2011 in Chennai. The mall is being developed in a joint venture with Vijaya Productions and has a floor space of 7,00,000-sq ft.
Currently, the Group has developments spread over 20-million sq ft and about 13-million sq ft is under construction.
The company would be going for an IPO soon and plans to file its DRHP with Sebi soon, he said.

More public toilets, storm-water drains to be built
MYSORE: After Mysore earned the title of being the second cleanest city in the country among the 423 cities surveyed last year, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is focussing on getting the city to go green, so that it can earn a place among the healthiest cities (categorised green) to live in.
Mysore was classified in the blue category (recovering, but still diseased), ahead of Bangalore that has been placed in the black category (needing considerable improvement).
Points
Mysore, which is covered under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), secured 70.650 points to be adjudged the second cleanest city after Chandigarh, which earned 73.480 points. Bangalore, another JNNURM city, secured 53.637 points. Incidentally, Mysore is the only city in south India in the blue category.
It is first time that prominent Indian cities were rated on their sanitation standards and public health awareness. The ranking, which is part of the National Urban Sanitation Policy, is aimed at making cities and towns healthy and liveable.
“Our focus is to place the city in the green category complying with the parameters prescribed by the agencies,” MCC Commissioner K.S. Raykar told The Hindu. Expressing satisfaction over the national recognition and gratitude to the residents for supporting the MCC's initiatives, he said the recognition had increased the corporation's responsibilities.
“We shall focus on creating more land-fills, constructing public toilets and storm water drains, and take up slum development to eradicate open defecation,” he said. “Open defecation is not as rampant as it is in other cities.”
What counted
According to Mr. Raykar, the progress made in the aforementioned projects added weight. Other factors that worked in the city's favour were the underground drainage and the declining number of water-borne diseases.
The commissioner said that though the recognition did not bring financial benefits, it indirectly helped the city secure more projects for tourism development and others from the Centre.
He said the work on the land-fill on a 34-acre plot at the Sewage Farm was slated to begin in June and the requisite clearances from the Centre had already been secured. “Though we had plans of having the land-fill outside the city, we could not get adequate land,” the commissioner said.
Likewise, work on the construction of a housing complex with facilities such as water supply and drainage for slum-dwellers was almost ready; they will be able to shift soon,” he said.

engineer.akash May 13th, 2010, 12:46 PM MCC GIVES GREEN SIGNAL FOR POLICE MARTYRS' CIRCLE
Mysore, May 13 (RK&KMC)- The official naming of the Police Martyrs' Memorial Circle and unveiling the bust sculpture of Martyr SP Harikrishna is finally going to be realised, thanks to a historic decision taken by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) yesterday.
The decision to name the Circle in front of SPIG Office in Nazarbad as Police Martyrs' Memorial Circle was taken up at the Council meeting of the MCC Naming Committee chaired by Mayor Sandesh Swamy. Thus the ambitious project has got a new lease of life after five years.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/4540/111kw.jpg
Though the bust image of SP late Harikrishna had been installed at the Circle, the Committee that met here yesterday took up the unanimous decision of naming the Police Martyrs' Circle and the Circle linking Jalapuri-Gayathripuram-Chamundi Vihar Stadium Road as Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle.
The meeting was attended by MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar, Council Secretary Gayathri, Health Officer D. Nagaraj, former Mayors Purushotham, Ayub Khan and H.N. Srikantaiah, Health Standing Committee President and Zonal Officers.
It was also decided to invite Home Minister V.S. Acharya, DGP & IG Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh and other top Police officers for the bust unveiling function to be held on a grand scale.
Martyr SP Harikrishna
Harikrishna, while serving as the SP at Mysore, led the Task Force assigned with the job of nabbing forest brigand Veerappan. On the fateful night of Aug. 14, 1992, Harikrishna, along with Sub-Inspector Sha-keel Ahmed and four other Policemen, were murdered by Veerappan's gang by raining bullets on them after blocking the road on which the Police vehicle had been travelling, in the dense forests of Meenyam in Tamil Nadu.
Kempaiah's efforts
The then Karnataka Special Task Force Chief Kempaiah, who later served as the IGP (South Zone) of Mysore, had attempted to name the Circle in front of the SP office here after Martyr Harikrishna and install his statue at the Circle.
Kempaiah also desired to name the area as Police Corner in view of the Circle being surrounded by SP Office, IG Office, Police Quarters, IG's residence, Police Guest House and Police Club. To facilitate this ambitious project, Kempaiah had discussed with the then Police Commissioner Praveen Sood, MCC Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim and Mayor Bharathi.
Subsequently, some trees were felled in the vicinity, the SP office compound was shifted and the area around the Circle was widened. Later, Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao brought the bust of late SP Harikrishna.
MCC's objection
The ambitions of the Police were however spiked by the MCC Administrator, stating that the Circle came under the MCC purview and the process of naming it or installing a statue must be approved by MCC Council. It may be recalled here that in 2007, an Administrator was appointed for the MCC.
The then Council's proposal to name the Circle after Kittur Rani Chennamma, though cleared, was not implemented.
Still waiting
The bust of Martyr SP Harikrishna stands there since the past three years, wrapped in plastic sheet, witness to thousands of people who pass by that road every day. Several attempts were made by successive Police Officers who came to Mysore City to formally unveil the bust, but in vain. Presently, Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal appears to have been successful in appeasing MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar and with the new Mayor Sandesh Swamy giving a positive response, the project is all set to materialise.
'Efforts paid off'
Retired Police Officer Kempaiah, expressing pleasure over the MCC's decision to officially name the Martyrs' Police Circle and unveil the bust of SP Harikrishna, recalled the supreme sacrifice made by Harikrishna and five of his men in their action against forest brigand Veerappan.
Speaking to Star of Mysore yesterday, Kempaiah recalled his efforts in creating Police Corner at the said area en-compassing the Circle near SP and IG's Office and expressed gratitude to the City Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal and MCC.
"The Circle on Nrupatunga Road having dense traffic congestion, has been named as 'Police Corner," he said.
An honour to the Police
"The decision to name the SP Office Circle as Police Martyrs' Circle is an honour shown to entire Police community," opined Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal. "The bust of Harikrishna, by quirk of fate, has been placed at the Circle and removing it from that place would mean a great dishonour to the men in uniform," he said.

engineer.akash May 13th, 2010, 12:50 PM WASTE DISPOSAL AUTO TIPPERS TO BE REDEPLOYED
Mysore, May 13 (HT&DM)- Mayor Sandesh Swamy has come forward to give a new lease of life to the waste disposal auto tippers which are lying discarded for the past several months.
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/9042/1112s.jpg
The Mayor, who visited the Excel Solid Waste Management Plant in Vidyaranyapuram for a personal inspection last evening following complaints received by local residents on the stench emanating from the waste disposal plant, was in for a surprise when he saw 166 new waste disposal auto tippers purchased at a cost of Rs. 3.3 crores under JNNURM scheme lying unused at a corner.
When questioned, the Corporation Health Officer Nagaraju informed the Mayor that the auto tippers which have been purchased exclusively for waste disposal have been parked here for want of space. The current, waste disposal contract will end by June and these tippers will be handed over to the contractor who is awarded the new contract, he added.
After calling for quick completion of new tender process, the Mayor gave instructions for the use of auto tippers by the Corporation civic workers until then.
On being briefed on the waste disposal management system in the plant, the Mayor ordered immediate construction of a wall around the plant at a cost of Rs. 70 lakhs under JNNURM sch-eme so as to prevent the spread of stench in localities within 3.4 km radius of the plant.
He also instructed the officials for developing and asphalting the roads in Sewage Farm premises.
Corporators, Asha Lakshminarayana, Byrappa, Shivakumar, Mahadevappa and K.V. Mallesh, Corporation Superintending Engineer Mahesh, Asst. Commissioner Sridhar and others accompanied the Mayor.

The airport, remodelled at a cost of Rs 82 crore, has a runway length of 1,740 metres and a width of 30 metres. It can handle short-haul flights with a capacity of 60-70 passengers.
The CM said that the subsidy would encourage private flight operators to fly several new routes.
The new routes include Mysore to Chennai via Bangalore; Mysore to Kochi; Mysore to Goa and Mysore to Tirupati
1740 meters = 5 708.66 feet which is less than 9000 feet of Mangalore airport.

engineer.akash May 19th, 2010, 07:10 PM MCC TO REVIVE GOPURAM PARK: MAYOR INSPECTS SPOT
Mysore, May 18 (KCU)- The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has begun the revival of the Gopuram Park besides Doddakere bund on Ooty Road here.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4989/imageasp.jpg
The park, with an impressive stone tower, was learnt to have been constructed during the days of Maharajas. The MCC in 2002 had got the place around the tower cleaned and developed at a cost of about Rs. 2 lakh.
Seating arrangements were made along with planting of ornamental plants and trees. A lush lawn too was grown with a good pathway laid with stone slabs.
However, only a few people used to frequent the park as the sewage water flowing in the adjoining drain used to emanate unbearable stench and mosquitoes frequented the place.
Now, Mayor Sandesh Swamy has come forward to revive the park with a new look and in that context, he inspected the place yesterday. He was accompanied by JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu, Junior Engineer Farooq, Health Inspector Puttaswamy, Javed Ahmed, Corporators Jayashankar Swamy, Anwar Baig, Mahadevappa and R. Sunanda Kumar.
Sandesh initiated the removal of shrubs grown at the place. He assured to get the sewage water flowing beside the park diverted and modernise the park with good lighting system.

Mysore, May 21 (RK & DM)-The second unit of the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) is to be set up in Hebbal Industrial area here in a year’s time, said DFRL Director Dr. A.S.Bawa.
Addressing the Press at the seminar hall of DFRL in Siddharthanagar this morning, Dr. Bawa said that the 40-acre unit will have a full-fledged laboratory as well as a quality control section.
Stating that Rs. 12 crore had been earmarked for the construction of the building, Dr Bawa said that Rs. 90 crore would be spent on equipment and their installation. He said work on the unit had been launched and that it would be completed in a year's time.
Tracing the history of the role of DFRL in meeting the needs of the armed forces, Dr. Bawa said that Kargil conflict was a turning point for DFRL when it embarked on providing survival, flying and five-man rations for forces in forward areas and battle theatres. He said that during ‘Operation Vijay’ in Kargil, DFRL, Mysore supplied 1,20,000 meals to the army alone.
DFRL's spin-off contributions by way of technology transfer of 550 processes and technologies had led to more than 250 entrepreneurs across the country setting up their own establishments.
Dr. Bawa also said that there were orders from the Indo-Tibetan Border Patrol and the Border Security Force for 1,50,000 ready-to-eat meals. He said that the special ready-to-eat and quick-cooking packs geared for use in disaster relief operations were being made regularly and processes updated.

• 65,000 saplings to be planted • Forest Department envisages theme-based greenery • Exclusive allocation in MCC budget
Mysore, May 21 (KCU&KK)- The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has joined hands with the Forest Department in a drive to turn the entire city green.
They together have embarked upon the constructive idea of planting about 65,000 saplings throughout the city.
Sans any fanfare, about 1,000 saplings have been already planted in Vijayanagar and another 600 in Dattagalli to set the ball rolling.
MLC Sandesh Nagaraj formally launched the 'Go Green' drive today by planting a sapling in front of the residence of Mayor Sandesh Swamy in Ittigegud here. He also announced to contribute from the MLC Fund for the worthy cause.
He was joined by Sandesh Swamy, Corporators and local residents (predominantly homemakers) who voluntered to plant the saplings.
More allocation
Speaking on the occasion, Sandesh Swamy pointed out that MCC had allocated Rs. 28 lakh for afforestation in city during the last budget and saplings purchased then were being planted now. This year, the allocation will be increased further with more constructive schemes, the Mayor assured.
DCF Sashwathi Mishra, who was present, sought better participation from the residents.
"Planting the sapling, providing a tree guard and watering would be done by the Forest Department. However, the residents should also evince interest in the scheme and see that the saplings are not consumed by stray cattle or destroyed. To have good accountability, a committee will be constituted comprising Forest officers and environmentalists to offer suggestions to improvise the scheme. Funds are expected to flow in from MUDA too", she said.
The DCF told SOM, on the cards was a theme-based greenery: "There should be innovation in the scheme. For example, only neem saplings can be planted beside a stretch of road for a specific benefit. Even parks can be made theme-based with calculated planting of selected saplings at specific areas of the park giving characteristic names".

Mysore, May 21, DHNS
As the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans combat the maoists in the naxal inflicted North East, the personnel will- keep their appetite from food supplied from Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore.
The DFRL which was supplying packaged food for only armed forces till now has received a bulk orders for supply of 1.20 lakh rations or food packets for the para military forces in North East and other places.
“We have received orders particularly for those working in hostile conditions in naxal inflicted regions. The DFRL will also supply water pouches to the anti-naxal forces as water available in this region is not potable,” Director A S Bawa told reporters.
In a press conference on Friday, he said production was underway and the supply would begin soon. Bawa said the DFRL was also working on developing effective food packaging method to protect the food item from biological warfare under the bio defence project. He said the appetizers, energy capsules and mutton sandwich developed for jawans on high altitude were well received.
Dr Batra, who is heading the project said the Government has entrusted DFRL to develop reliable and low cost technology against biological and chemical warfare. We are developing a comprehensive protection system.
He said the Country required to have more laboratories on lines of DFRL to work on bio defence. In United States, 400 institutions are working on the subject. The Director said the DFRL will have its new campus at a 20-acre plot near Infosys at the Hebbal Industrial area.
The new campus will have laboratory facilities and production facilities, he stated.
He declined to comment on the Government’s proposal to merge the DFRL with CSIR.

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is leaving no stone unturned to become the cleanest city in the country. This, after it earned the title of the second cleanest city in the country among 423 cities surveyed last year. The MCC is making every effort to get the ‘green' tag, as it was classified in the ‘blue' category, ahead of Bangalore that was placed in the black category.
The MCC, in association with the Department of Forest, has taken up an ambitious programme to plant 65,000 saplings across the city to paint it green. Over 1,000 saplings have been planted in Vijayanagar and 600 in Dattagalli area as part of the programme.
Covered under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Mysore secured 70,650 points and was adjudged the second cleanest city after Chandigarh. It is for the first time that prominent Indian cities were rated on their sanitation standards and public health awareness.
The MCC is now aiming for the green tag by complying with the parameters prescribed by the agencies that awards positions. Planting saplings is a part of the “Go Green” project launched by the MCC.
Launch
Member of the Legislative Council Sandesh Nagaraj here on Friday formally launched the “Go Green Mysore” drive by symbolically planting a sapling in front of the residence of Mayor Sandesh Swamy in Ittigegud. He also promised to release funds for the project, which would help the city in upgrading from the “blue” to “green” category. Residents of Ittigegud, the Mayor and Deputy Conservator of Forests Shashwathi Mishra were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sandesh Swamy pointed out that the MCC had allocated Rs.28 lakh for greening the city in the last budget and saplings procured then were being planted now. “During the year, allocation would be increased further and new constructive schemes would be drawn to make the programme successful,” he said.
Seeking better participation of the people to make the programme a success, Ms. Mishra said that planting saplings, providing tree guards and watering would be done by the Forest Department. “It is the responsibility of the people to protect the saplings from stray cattle,” she said.
To make the programme successful, a committee of forest officers and environmentalists would be formed, she said. The committee would offer suggestions on how to improve the programme. The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) would also support the project, she added.

Busy hub: The Golden Chariot being worked on at the Mysore Railway Workshop.
MYSORE: The 86-year-old Ashokapuram Railway Workshop is in for a major overhaul and modernisation as a master plan entailing an investment of Rs. 62 crore will be submitted to the Railway Board for its approval.
Disclosing this to The Hindu, Chief Workshop Manager P.K. Purohit said that once approved, it would be the first major overhauling and modernisation programme to be implemented and would help meet the requirements of the Indian Railways for another 50 years.
The master plan proposes to have state-of-the-art machinery and equipment to dispense with certain obsolete and manual operations still deployed in the workshop. New infrastructure by way of new sheds, realignment of the existing sheds, new facility for overhead cranes to lift the bogies and streamlining the workshop process so as to introduce a uniflow system, apart from modern painting equipment, has been envisaged in the master plan.
Periodic overhaul
The workshop is mainly used for the Periodic Overhauling (POH) of coaches. At present, it has a capacity to take up 11 air-conditioned coaches and 65 non-air-conditioned coaches a month. But once the workshop is upgraded, its capacity would be augmented to handle at least 100 coaches a month, said Mr. Purohit. This is necessary in view of the expansion of the railway services and introduction of new train services.
A proposal to upgrade the workshop was accorded administrative approval a few years ago and a Rs. 32-crore plan had been submitted. But the Railway Board sought some technical upgradation and further improvements and hence a new master plan for Rs. 62 crore is being finalised. “The master plan will be submitted to higher authorities by the end of May,” said Mr. Purohit.
The engineering section would require an investment of Rs. 32.3 crore while Rs. 27.55 crore has been sought for the mechanical side, and Rs. 2.57 crore for the electrical wing.
The workshop at Ashokapuram has a sanctioned strength of 1,984 employees and the present employee strength is 1,742 and the workload on the employees has also increased. The annual turn out of the POH coaches from the Mysore workshop was 800 coaches in 2007-08 which increased to 850 in 2008-09 and 870 coaches during 2009-10. This year as on April 30, the workshop has turned out 73 coaches as against the target of 68 coaches. In view of the projected increase in the number of coaches to be attended to, the master plan envisages an installed capacity of at least 100 coaches to meet the future requirements, said Mr.Purohit.
The Railway Board has allocated funds for the computerisation of the entire workshop. This would make the coach history accessible and retrievable for any details pertaining to its maintenance and repair which adds to the safety factor. Among the new mission areas identified for the workshop is the development of LED destination boards in which the train number, train name, coach number can be stored and displayed in multiple languages and reset with remote operation. Apart from the normal POH of broad-gauge coaches, the workshop has also taken up POH of diesel locomotive wheels.
The Mysore Railway Workshop was established as a base workshop for the erstwhile Mysore State Railway in 1924 and it was expanded in 1938. It was originally designed for the POH of metre gauge coaches but was expanded to take up the POH of broad gauges as well in 1992-93.

engineer.akash May 23rd, 2010, 02:10 PM MANDAKALLI AIRPORT: HOW SAFE WITH CH' HILL NEARBY?
Mysore May 23 (KK&DM)- The present location of Mandakalli airport in the proximity of Chamundi Hill may prove to be an accident-prone zone, given the tragic air crash at Mangalore’s Bajpe airport yesterday in which more than 160 people perished.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/3308/aspm.jpg
The elevation of the airport is 2100 feet above the sea level while the Chamundi Hill is 4965 feet above the sea level and this could be a possible risk. Moreover, the Hill is towards the northeast direction, in the path of flights to and from Bangalore.
Concerns had been raised in the year 2005 about the location of the airport being in proximity to the Chamundi Hill and an alternative location at Hunsur was suggested and even a report from an expert committee was presented to the Govt. This issue was also raised by the ACICM, a city-based NGO. In ad-dition, there are two or three lakes nearby which may act as mirage to the pilots if not doubly alert.
Yet all this was of no avail and the airport has come up at Mandakalli where there was already an improvised airport for small aircrafts. It is now up to the Airport Authority of India to dispel the fears and assure that this new airport is safe in all respects.
It is worth recalling that the Meenambakkam airport at Chennai, being in alignment with St. Thomas Mount nearby along the Highway 45, has now been made a cargo terminal for same reason.
It may be mentioned that there was a request made to the Railway Department, before laying the broadgauge line, to shift the line to provide space for airport. That was not done due to official lethargy and also of the people's representatives.
Acquiring land too has been a problem for Mysore airport which should be tackled by the authorities with all seriousness, not yielding to political pressure, according to a frequent flyer. SOM

Akash,
I don't buy the arguement which says due to presence of Chamundi Hills, the current AP is not safe. If you go through the Airport locations and history of many airports, many of them are located in tricky locations. It does not mean that all of them are not safe.
Take off and landing is only possible with sheer co-ordination between pilot and the ATC. If both function properly with proper knowledge of the location, nothing will happen. Error by any one could mean disaster. Off course, technical snag is another issue.

engineer.akash May 23rd, 2010, 08:04 PM Doddakere set for big make-over
H M Aravind, TNN, May 23, 2010, 10.27pm IST
MYSORE: The historical Doddakere is finally emerging from the ruins. The site that stands as a window to the way the life has moved on at the princely town is getting an image make-over. When Mysore was still a small town, it primarily depended on three water bodies-- Doddakere, Kukkarahalli Lake and Karanji Lake. East of the Mysore Fort and opposite the Mysore Palace was the Doddakere tank, which was used for drinking and washing purpose even towards end of the 19th century.
As the time moved on, Doddakere, which was called Devaraja Lake, dried up while the other two survived urbanization. It is stated that Doddakere added beauty to the Palace forming a natural add-on. When the lake bed dried up, the only remnant was the gopura at the far end of the water body towards the foothills of Chamundi Hills.
The MCC in 2001 moved in to protect the site marking the boundary and developing it as a park naming it Gopura Garden. Nine years down the line, it has degraded owing to lack of maintenance. Reason: There were no guards to protect its sanctity and the site lost its verve. Left to vagaries of life, the site was making its way into history books when it caught the attention of mayor Sandesh Swamy during a spot inspection of Brindavan, the burial ground of the Mysore royal family.
"It is part of our heritage too. When we are planning to revive other heritage sites, this one should not suffer," he explains. The site is cleaned and the monument is attended to. "We will ensure that the site is properly maintained and does not fall off the radar," Swamy stated.
As for history, the Gopura Garden links Mysore to one of its oldest water holes. History tells us that Devaraja Lake was one of the biggest lakes in the city. Surrounded by open space mainly used by rulers of Mysore, the water body was a sight to behold. In its surroundings were Summer Palace, Vasanth Mahal, Palace stables, which is now the KSRP HQ and Karanji Mansion, the villa of the sister of Mysore Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

engineer.akash May 24th, 2010, 01:14 PM GREENING OF K'HALLI LAKE LAUNCHED 1,000 BIRD-FRIENDLY SAPLINGS PLANTED
Mysore, May 24 (RK&SH)- Mysore City Corporation, State Forest Department (Mysore Division) and the Mysore University jointly launched the Greening of Mysore project in the surroundings of Kukkarahalli Lake here this morning by planting around 1,000 saplings of 'bird-friendly' trees.
The saplings were planted in the now flattened area between the Lake and the Hunsur Road where about 900 eucalyptus trees had been uprooted recently.
For the past couple of weeks, the areas abutting the Lake was being denuded of trees and the place being cleared and flattened using heavy earth-moving equipment.
The Lake and its environs are home to more than 200 species of birds like herons, ibises, cormorants, darters, harriers, owls, greebes, egrets etc. The Lake is also home to several crocodiles and water snakes. The fish diversity of the Lake is not known.
Earlier, 60 Forest Department staff began planting saplings guided by Deputy Conservator of Forests Sashwati Mishra. Prof. V.G. Talwar, Vice-Chancellor, Mysore University, Prof. E.T. Puttaiah, Registrar, Ramesh, Range Forest Officer, Kempankegowda, Assistant Director, Mysore University Horticulture Department, Prof. K.M. Jayaramaiah, Convenor, Kukkarahalli Lake Protection Committee, S.K. Mujawar, Asst. Horticulture Officer of the University and others took part. Saplings of Atti, Hippe Nerale, Naatimaavu, Tabubia, Honge, Neem, Halasu, Gooseberry, Sampige, Banyan, Peepul, etc., were planted.
The cost of the project has been met by MCC. Forest Department has provided saplings while the responsibility of nurturing the saplings lies with the University’s Horticulture Dept.
When Star of Mysore spoke to the members of the Bird-Watchers Club of Bangalore that does the annual RAMSAR water fowl census and maintains a checklist of birds in the various lakes and wooded areas of Karnataka, they said that it was wrong to say that all birds nest in the trees.
The water fowl species like grebes, moorhens nest among the bulrushes at the edges of a water body while egrets and other species nest among tall trees with sparse tops and yet others like the common kingfisher, parakeets, mynahs and spotted owlets prefer holes in the boles of trees or sand banks.
They also said that any attempt to lure birds to the trees once they are grown, depends on regulating walkers and others who frequent the lake; regulating the boating hours and the area used by the boats.
They also suggested that the Mysore University should start making a checklist of the birds of Kukkarahalli which should be updated every six months to find out whether the greening of the Kukkarahalli Lake has proved to be a success.

engineer.akash May 25th, 2010, 01:15 PM CITY'S LAKES TO BE RID OF SEWAGE INFLOW
* Karanji Lake in danger of becoming a 'Sewage Farm' * Waste water treatment plants to be installed at lakes
Mysore, May 25 (KK&KMC)- The decades-old problem of sewage water flowing into city's lakes will finally be solved by the installation of waste water treatment plants at Kukkarahalli Kere, Karanji Kere and Dalvoy Kere (Nanjangud Road).
MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar told Star of Mysore this morning that the treatment plants will be installed as per Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) scheme. Tender process for Kuk-karahalli Lake will commence tomorrow while rest of the lakes' tenders will be completed in 10 days, Raikar said.
Mayor inspects Karanji Lake
Mayor Sandesh Swamy, who was on his regular Ward-wise padayatra in Siddhartha Layout this morning, inspected the sewage water flowing into Karanji Lake.
He sought information about the steps taken in the recent past to prevent the Lake's pollution. When the MCC officials present at the spot were unable to clarify the doubts, an irked Mayor berated the officials and walked away in a huff.
Karanji Lake is being polluted by sewage water directly flowing into the Lake every day. The sewage water, coming all the way from Yeraganahalli and Siddhartha Layout through the Under Ground Drainage (UGD), flows into the storm-water drain and into the Karanji Lake.
A lot of solid wastes including plastic articles and footwear get collected at the mesh installed at the Lake's entry point, which need to be removed manually everyday.
The sewage water further connects to MRC junction and flowing via Exhibition Ground (M.G. Road), reaches the Waste Water Treatment Plant at Sewage Farm.
The problem, though decades old, has now aggravated owing to the increase in city's population. Besides, the UGD measuring 1.5 ft in diameter, was installed a decade ago under the ADB grants.
Vani Vilas Water Works Executive Engineer Subrahmanya told Star of Mysore this morning that there was a proposal to replace the existing UGD with a new pipeline of 3 metres diameter. However, the proposal was shelved because of the existing line being 8 mts. deep from end to end. "If a new line is to be laid having gravitational flow, it would have to be laid even deeper," said Subrahmanya and added that it was impractical as the line would go very deep at the end point near Karanji Lake.
The total length of the UGD is 6 kms; 2 kms from Yeraganahalli to MRC and 4 kms from MRC to Sewage Farm.
"Another proposal made earlier was to construct wet-wells near the lakes and pump the sewage water to MRC. Even this was shelved, considering the non-viability of the project which needed a lot of investment," Subrahmanya said.
The treatment plant project is the outcome of repeated complaints made by former Zoo Executive Director Vijay Ranjan Singh to the MCC Commissioner, it is learnt.
If immediate steps are not taken, the water of Karanji Lake will be totally polluted with the sewage water polluting the Lake atmosphere making it unfit for public use and also boating, according to Zoo authorities.

On the lookout:A technician monitoring the images retrieved from the high-resolution cameras at the office of the Police Commissioner in Mysore.
MYSORE: Motorists can no longer slip away after violating traffic rules. For, 42 high-resolution cameras have been installed at intersections and circles in the city with the aim of bringing in traffic discipline and penalising offenders.
Though the cameras have been installed for the purpose of surveillance, the city police are also using them to monitor traffic and curb traffic violations. Vehicular traffic has gone up two-fold in the last five years following a sharp rise in the number of vehicles, particularly two-wheelers.
A control room has been set up at the office of the Police Commissioner to monitor the high resolution images retrieved from the cameras and take note of the violations.
The violation is immediately informed to the police control room which in turn transmits it to the wireless set of the traffic police in that area. If the offender is not caught immediately, the details of the offender are collected from the respective transport authorities and subsequently a fine is imposed on him.
Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Rajendra Prasad said that jumping signals and overspeeding were among the common traffic violations. He said that the traffic police could not be present at every place to curb violations. Therefore, cameras had been installed at various points in the city, he said.
“Even though we cannot book all the offenders, vehicle-users will be alert knowing that cameras are watching them. At least this way violations will come down,” Mr. Prasad said.
However, change in ownership of vehicles and change in address of vehicle-owners delayed the process of imposing penalty on offenders, he said.
Speed cameras
In order to check overspeeding by vehicles, six traffic enforcement cameras or speed cameras will soon be installed at locations where there is high traffic density.
Besides detecting overspeeding, the cameras will also capture images of violations, including jumping signals. The camera unit comes with the latest automatic number plate detection, according to Mr. Prasad.
“These cameras are specifically meant for traffic enforcement unlike the surveillance cameras. We can store the data for over a month and present it as evidence if questioned by the offenders,” he said.
Mr. Prasad said the cameras could also help in detecting stolen vehicles.
Locations
The locations where the cameras are likely to be installed include the Kukkarahalli Lake junction near the government press, Kalasthwadi on Bangalore-Mysore Highway, Hunsur Road and Manandawadi Road.

engineer.akash May 28th, 2010, 07:07 AM School for traffic education taking shape in Mysore
Mysore, May 28: A school for traffic education is taking shape at the Yezdi Children's Park on Lok Ranjan Mahal Road here.
The objective is to educate schoolchildren on various aspects of road safety and traffic rules.
Reckoned to have been built as a replica of Mysore nearly 27 years ago, the park, located in front of the office of the City Police Commissioner, was opened in 1981 by the then Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao. The park is the brainchild of renowned industrialist and the founder of Ideal Jawa, the late F.K. Irani. Yezdi was one of the popular motorcycle models manufactured by Ideal Jawa.
The park has buildings in miniature forms representing houses, hospitals, police stations, roads and many other structures that existed in the city at the time of its construction to give a glimpse of the royal city to children.
The park, which belongs to the Mysore City Corporation (MCC), is in a bad shape owing to poor maintenance during the last few years. The park was renovated two years ago following the intervention of Bhaskar Rao, the then Commissioner of Police.
Till recent years, the park was the most-frequented spot for the children, especially on the weekends.
To make the place meaningful and help the police in educating children on road safety and traffic rules, the corporation came forward to develop it as the traffic park as proposed by the police.
The work is under way and is likely to be completed in a few weeks, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Rajendra Prasad.
He told The Hindu that the park would also have a mini go karting track.
The traffic police plan to bring schoolchildren to the park and explain them the importance of road safety and traffic rules. With traffic signage and road safety signs, it would be easier for the children to understand and follow them, Mr. Prasad said.
Mr. Prasad said awareness on traffic and road safety had become the need of the hour.
Pictorial representation
Traffic education would be imparted to children in the form of pictorial representation. There are discussions on making provision for children to ride bicycles in the park.

Krishnamoorthy K June 2nd, 2010, 07:53 PM * It has already acquired 310 acres of land in a radius of 12 km from Mysore city
* Land has been identified in Mysore and Hunsur taluks, and in Chamarajanagar district
* ‘A few landowners even came forward to sell their property'
MYSORE: Anticipating investments in and around Mysore in view of the Global Investors Meet in Bangalore on June 3 and 4, the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has identified over 8,000 acres of non-agricultural land for industrial projects and has already acquired 310 acres in a radius of 12 km from Mysore city.
Owing to opposition to the acquisition of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes, the KIADB recently surveyed non-agricultural land in and around the city and in neighbouring Chamarajanagar.
Sources in the KIADB told The Hindu that more than 8,000 acres of non-agricultural land had been identified in Mysore and Hunsur taluks of Mysore district, and in Chamarajanagar. “If investors are keen on making investments in the region, we can complete the acquisition process by issuing preliminary and final notifications and taking farmers and other stakeholders into confidence,” the sources added.
Land bank
Following hurdles in acquiring agricultural land in the areas surrounding Nanjangud, the KIADB, on the apparent instructions of the Government, decided to create a land bank of non-agricultural land. Accordingly, it succeeded in earmarking more than 8,000 acres, with the majority of the land located within a radius of about 20 km from the city.
The land identified is said to be unsuitable for active farming. “A few landowners even came forward to sell their property and make way for industrial growth,” the sources added.
Over 6,000 acres of non-agricultural land has been identified at Manuganahalli, about 7 km from Yelwal in Bilikere hobli. Likewise, 1,400 acres had been identified in neighbouring Chamarajanagar and preliminary notification for its acquisition has reportedly been issued.
The KIADAB had identified 1,400 acres at Tandya near Nanjangud, a prominent industrial hub in the State, a few years ago but could not acquire it following opposition from farmers since some of the land was being irrigated.
“Since there is no decision from the higher authorities on the land at Tandya, there is still hope for investments if current hurdles are cleared and an agreement is reached,” the sources added.
Out of the 310 acres of land acquired, 250 acres are in Kadakola and Kochanahalli villages in Nanjangud industrial belt and 60 acres is in Koorgalli.
The KIADB had identified 500 acres at Muddanahalli near Kalale, 12 km from Nanjangud, following a request from a reputed automobile company to set up a car manufacturing unit and a preliminary notification was issued. However, the land could not be acquired since there no headway was made with regard to the project. Even this land could be available for investment if the necessary formalities are fulfilled, according to the sources.
The non-agricultural land identified for industrial development has been approved by a high-power committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner. The Joint Director of Industries and the representatives of the industries' association are among the members of the committee. “Only after its consent, the next process of issuing notification is set into motion,” the sources said.
Of late, the KIADB has been facing hurdles in acquiring lands in Nanjangud and Srirangapatna because most of the land is irrigated. Therefore, the KIADB has set its eyes on the Hunsur belt, which, according to sources, had plenty of non-agricultural land.
Nevertheless, none of the land notified in the recent past has been denotified. The KIADB is not looking to acquire land in H.D. Kote taluk because most of it is forest lands.

engineer.akash June 4th, 2010, 09:13 AM KOREAN ROOF FOR DASARA KUSTI AKHADA
Mysore, June 2 (MTY&KMC) -The D. Devaraja Urs Multipurpose Stadium (Kusti Akhada) at Dasara Exhibition Grounds here has been modernised with the installation of an arch-shaped roof over an area of 10,000 square feet, without any central pillars or poles for support.
http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/8549/imageasps.jpg
The arch-shaped roof, erected using Korean technology, costs Rs. 45 lakh, said Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chairman (KEA) B.P. Manjunath.
Addressing a press conference here today, Manjunath said that the Galvalume roof was being erected in a simple design — long metal sheets fixed to heavy concrete beams on either ends and bent in the form of an arch in the middle.
"The sheets, joined to each other using heat-compressing machines and rivets, will last for at least 45 years and has zero maintenance," said Manjunath and added that the rust-proof sheet is an alloy of 45 per cent aluminium and 55 per cent zinc. A total of 46 sheets are being used for the arena, each measuring 30.85 ft in length, 5 ft in width and 5 mm in thickness.
"The circular arena with seats in the shape of steps all around, has a capacity to accommodate 12,000 spectators," said Manjunath and added that the Multipurpose Stadium will also be rented out for social ceremonies, sports events and functions of educational institutions.
Presently, 50 workers are engaged in erecting the roof. The sheets are lifted into place by a crane and several Korean machines are being used to splice and rivet the sheets that are blue and white in colour.
Project for Global Investors Meet
Manjunath said that an integrated project Mysore Vision 2010-2025, worth Rs. 454 crore, was submitted to the State Government to be tabled before the investors at the Global Investors' Meet to be held in Bangalore from tomorrow.
"The project comprises Heritage Street Kusti Academy, Theme Garden, Convention Centre, Exhibition Hall, Festival Plaza, Science Park, Art Village and a restaurant," said Manjunath.
Manjunath added that a parking space for 1,086 cars had been identified to be developed using funds from global investors.
"Under the project, the Dasara Exhibition will be provided entrances on all four sides and impressive arches will be erected," he said.
Speaking about the proposed Yeddyurappa Raitha Santhe at the M.G.Road Market Yard, Manjunath said that under the plan, 200 stalls will be provided.
Work on Pravasi Soudha at the Snake Park area near the Exhibition is in progress for which a sum of Rs. 5 crore has been sanctioned, Manjunath said.
Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chief Executive Officer Dr. H.T. Chandrashekhar, Nirmithi Kendra Project Manager Manjunath, KEA Assistant Executive Engineer Jagadeesh and Proflex company's Gajendra were present at the press meet.

MYSORE: In the wake of increased terror attacks at prominent tourists spots, mostly frequented by foreign tourists, the government, which stepped up security by installing cameras across the city and at the Mysore Palace, has now planned to have electric fencing around the fort wall.
The palace, which is spread across 72 acres, has a 12-foot compound wall.
Huge trees and construction of high-rise structures around the palace have necessitated further enhancement of security of the palace.
According to sources, the Police Commissioner reviewed the security aspects and has suggested the need for installing the electric fencing; the palace board has also prepared a Rs 1.60-crore plan to install the fencing.
The palace board officials have held talks with the Electronic Corporation of India on installing the electric fence.
The board has also taken measures like installing closed-circuit television cameras inside and outside the palace, under-vehicle scanners, baggage scanners and metal detectors. The board has approved the construction of cellar parking near Mariyamma temple in the palace premises to accommodate around 800 cars.
The palace is likely to get funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for the construction of parking lots and for creating basic facilities for tourists.
Mysore palace deputy director Awaradi said, “The proposal has been prepared according to the directions of the police in order to enhance the
security of the palace and its tourists.”

India101 June 5th, 2010, 01:56 PM Now, govt urged to shift Mysore Race Course
MYSORE: The tussle for hold over the golf course has taken a turn, with the district administration suggesting the state government to shift the Mysore Race Course out of the city limits and convert it into a botanical garden.
Even as the Mysore Race Club (MRC) is involved in the battle with the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club (JWGC) for the use of swathes of land at the foothills of Chamundi Hills for its golfing activities, the district administration has approached the revenue department to take over the land and develop it as a botanical garden.
The MRC asked the JWGC to stop its golfing activities at a part of the race course some two months ago, leading to the row.
Deputy commissioner P Manivannan has written a letter to the revenue department's principal secretary, seeking him to shift the race course and convert the land into a botanical garden like at Ooty, sources told `The Times of India.' The DC has suggested the government to consider moving racing and golfing activities to a location near the Mysore Airport.
This comes ahead of a meeting convened on Tuesday to resolve the dispute between the MRC and the JWGC. The meeting is a fallout of district minister S Suresh Kumar's intervention to resolve the crisis. A case is pending before the Mysore sub-divisional magistrates court too.
Sources said that the MRC is operating out of some 140 acres government land leased to it. The lease has expired in 2006 and the government has not renewed the lease as yet. Pointing this out, the DC has favoured the land to be used for public purpose. Manivannan is believed to have argued for the shifting of the race course, pointing at relocation of race course at Bangalore. The district minister is kept informed of the suggestion, sources stated, adding that the idea was thought of for sometime now and the MRC is aware of the these ideas. Mayor Sandesh Swamy is also believed to have favoured the move.
As the race course is located at the foothills, the authorities are seeking to utilize the space as buffer zone to preserve ecology of the Chamundi Hills. Creation of infrastructure for tourists in the area like under-construction world-class aquarium next to Mysore Zoo is also used to forward the idea of a botanical garden at the race course arguing that it will promote tourism. The zoo is located yards away from the race course.
According to estimates, some 25 lakh tourists visit the Chamundi Hills and Mysore Zoo. The idea is to use the government land to help the travellers better.

engineer.akash June 6th, 2010, 01:15 PM On-line monitoring of traffic violations, illegal activities
Sunday, 06 June 2010
Violating traffic rules and involving in anti-social and illegal activities can now be detected instantaneously thanks to the introduction of 42 high resolution surveillance cameras at strategic pla-ces in city and monitored in the premises of the Police Commi-ssioner's office.
The Traffic Control Technology Centre (TCTC) was opened at the Police Commissioner's office during last Dasara itself. The Centre will be fully functioned round-the-clock in the next 15 days, says DCP (Crime and Traffic) P. Rajendraprasad.
TCTC incorporates the latest technology and the images captured by the cameras are beamed on computer services in the Police Commissioner's office for close monitoring by the staff.
System
The 36x optical zoom cameras can perfectly capture images of a vehicle, place or a person within a distance of 400 meters. Colours and registration numbers of vehicles, people present at the spot of trouble and other minute details can be easily recognised. The Control Room at the TCTC can record the information collected from all the 42 cameras round-the-clock and store them for a month. That helps in detection of any offence, says Rajendra Prasad.
Offices tracked
TCTC has already helped to nab a moped lifter and thrown light on an incident wherein a person took away a bag containing a laptop computer by diverting the attention of a woman at the City Railway Station. A trap has been laid to nab the culprits.
The scheme established at a cost of Rs. 6 crore was funded by the Chief Minister's Rs. 100 crore grant and launched by for-mer Minister Shobha Karandlaje last Dasara. TCTC is being operated on an experimental basis since the last 8 months by Nikhil Enterprises, an outsourced company of Bangalore. The data collected are being sent to higher Police officers, says the DCP.
The cameras are learnt to be fitted at check-posts, Chamundi Hill, Mysore Palace, near DC's office, prominent traffic signals, near City Corporation office and other places.

Gupta, who took charge as the deputy commissioner few days ago, paid a surprise visit to the stadium and took stock of the ground reality. After a three-hour inspection, Gupta felt the need to give the stadium a facelift by providing proper lighting facilities and basic infrastructure for sportspersons. There is also a proposal to convert the concrete floor of the indoor stadium into a wooden floor.
"Though infrastructure is good at the stadium, it lacks proper maintenance," said Gupta.
The indoor stadium is not being utilized to the maximum extent. He called upon schoolchildren to make use of the facility from 9 am to 4 pm. After an interaction with inmates of the girls hostel, Gupta told DYSS assistant director Suresh to provide quality food.
A meeting of all heads and experts in the related field will be convened soon, he said.

engineer.akash June 7th, 2010, 12:38 PM BUS STATIONS TO LOOK LIKE HI-TECH MALLS
Bus Days not a viable proposition in Mysore: Srinivas
Mysore, June 7 ( JP)- KSRTC is slowly but surely getting a makeover that will change the way bus stations will look for ever.
Speaking to SOM, M.N. Srinivas, Divisional Controller of KSRTC, Mysore Division, said that several hi-tech bus stations are being planned in places like Yelwal, Hootagalli and Kuvempunagar. These bus stations will be much more than a place for buses to pick up or drop the passengers. They will be like super malls with internet kiosks, cafeterias, shops, etc., where a person can also shop and with bus arrival information on LED displays, he will know when and where his bus will arrive and how much time he has left.
Referring to the Bus Day celebrations being held once a month in Bangalore, Srinivas said that KSRTC had attempted the same here in Mysore but that the response for various industrial areas was poor.
"This kind of project, like the one being done in Bangalore, is taken up to encourage people to use public transport. It works in Bangalore because there are many software companies that encourage their staff to use public transport, which is not so in the case of Mysore. The response from the industry here has been poor."
Srinivas also said that KSRTC had introduced several new innovative services like Srirangapatna and KRS trip, which means there will be a bus every 10 minutes.
He said "Why not check on the frequency of Route No. 303 to KRS? You will find that there is a bus leaving and one arriving every 10 minutes. And every bus is packed."
Bus Day
The Bus Day celebrations are being held in Bangalore on the 4th of every month to get people interested in using the public transport system.
According to the Chief Traffic Manager, Bangalore Metro Transport Corporation (BMTC), several studies were done prior to introducing Bus Days, by finding out the commuter profiles as well as number of commuters etc. The Bangalore initiative also found favour with many of the city's IT and IT-related firms that dot the suburbs. The bottomline of the Bus Day initiative is the promotion of BMTC as a sustainable travel option and to create an awareness among people about the same.
But Srinivas says that this cannot work in Mysore as the city lacks a large industry base and most of those who travel from the outskirts of the city are paid an allowance.
Referring to the Traffic Transit Model Centres (TTMC), Srinivas said that this would revolutionise the way bus stations are built and it only remains for people to take pride and help in maintaining the cleanliness of the place.
The creation of TTMC would be in keeping with the image of the city as heritage city where modernity is in harmony with tradition, said Srinivas.

"Singapore Zoo is world famous. The Mysore Zoo has established a close liaison with them with regard to exchange of animals successfully," he said.
The male Meerkat is aged 5 years, 7 months and the female is 1 year, 11 months. At Singapore Zoo, these cats were given mealworm, chicken drumstick and apple as food. This will be continued at Mysore Zoo also. The exchange scheme was started in 2008 itself, Zoo Manager Shivanna said.
For the time being, the Merkats will be housed in a room near the Zoo veterinary hospital and their movements and health will be watched and later allowed for public view. Separate rooms are getting ready for them. By nature, the cats dig the ground and make pits. Therefore, the floor will be constructed with cement covered with mud and only then they will be allowed free movement Belliappa said.

engineer.akash June 7th, 2010, 08:42 PM New fire station soon
TNN, Jun 7, 2010, 09.55pm IST
MYSORE: The city will get a new fire station near Infosys, Mysore campus, in a month. District fire and emergency service officials here have received three fire engines, including the latest vehicle water bowser with a capacity of 16,000 litres, for the new station, coming up in the Hebbal industrial area.
The authorities chose Hebbal as many major industries are located there. It is likely to be inaugurated by home minister V S Acharya within a month.
The decision was taken after the Reserve bank of India authorities petitioned the department to shift the fire station, located near the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited in Metagalli industrial area, according to a source.
RBI is expanding its boundary to set up an RBI note printing unit in Mysore and the area will cordoned off in view of security reasons. Even during emergency, fire personnel will have to undergo security checks and this may delay the operations. Hence, the authorities are planning to have their own station and accommodate the present staff of the station permanently.
Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had laid the foundation stone for the unit in March this year.
Regional fire officer C Gurulingaiah told ToI that three vehicles, including a hi-tech fire engine of 16,000 litre capacity water bowser, 22 staff, have been sanctioned to the new station. Water bowser has four exit points and it will be helpful for the personnel to attend to any major fire accident using this vehicle.

Pretty straightforward....Hindustan Unilever got the permission for high rise structure for the reason that Industrial units look for space optimization.
Same goes with Arvinda Parimala building.
Mysore corporation does not allow high rises in the vicinity of heritage structures which you must be aware of and you know in Mysore every KM you find scores of Heritage structures.Even from Nanjangud to Srirangaptna. ;)

R. Krishna Kumar

THE HINDU HOT PROPERTY: Mysore is anticipating big pressure on the housing front . Photo: M.A. Sriram
Mysore is poised to break into the list of ‘million-plus' cities, and qualify for ‘metropolitan city' status. A look by R. Krishna Kumar
The shifting demographic pattern in Mysore, which is fast going through a phase of urbanisation, is bound to have an impact on real estate trends in future.
The ongoing census exercise which will establish the population of the city will have a bearing on the property market scenario as Mysore is poised to break into the list of nearly 50 “million-plus” cities in India, and thus qualify for the tag of ‘metropolitan city.'
The city's population is projected to be pegged at nearly 1.2 million and this is based on the population growth index of 22.2 per cent. Given the present growth rate, the population is expected to cross the 15.7 lakh mark by 2020 and 22 lakh by 2030, which will only add to the pressure on land and demand for housing.
Long-term impact
While the population growth coupled with urbanisation will increase the demand on property services and add to the pressure on the real estate market, the long-term impact of this unfolding scenario on the character of the city is not studied.
Will the horizontal sprawl of Mysore, preferred by many, continue or will there be a shift to vertical growth that will make apartments a more viable proposition in the absence of land to sustain the demand for housing in Mysore?
Will the near scarcity of land within the city limits lead to an exodus to purchase land on the outskirts, leading to proliferation of satellite centres? The current trends seem to indicate so as land value within the city limits has shot up beyond the reach of the salaried class and hence the focus is on development on the outskirts.
The City Development Plan submitted to the Central Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) anticipated the emerging scenario and the land use pattern and analysis projected an increase in the size of the city. As per the CDP submitted in 2005, Mysore was expected to have a spread of around 15,600 hectares by 2011-12 or nearly 156 sq. km., up from the 105 sq. km. in 1991. Of this, the total area to be used for residential purpose was expected to be around 6,098 hectares, an increase of 114 per cent over the 2001 figure of 2,850 hectares.
Again, the slow but gradual industrialisation of Tier-2 cities like Mysore has brought in its wake a change in the demographic pattern and there are more number of people in the 35-year plus to 50-year plus category which is when a decision on housing is made by individuals, which will add to the demand for housing and real estate services.
Shift in profile
This gradual shift in the population profile of Mysore and the decline in the median age when investment on housing is seriously considered by individuals will continue to propel the growth in future. Studies by professional bodies such as ASSOCHAM and inputs from major players in real estate and property developers have proved that the average age of first-time home buyers across India is declining due to rise in salary and easy availability of housing finance. The same factors are at work in Mysore.
The demographic profile of Mysore is set to alter further with better connectivity to Bangalore by way of track doubling work between the two cities, likely to be completed by 2013. This is expected to reduce the commuting time to less than two hours and observers forecast more investment in Mysore, resulting in creation of jobs that will usher in the service sector as well.
This will add to the size of the salaried and the middle class in Mysore and increase the demand on the housing front as well as the retail market segment in the medium and long term.

engineer.akash June 10th, 2010, 03:09 PM Process may offer long-term solution to disposing of solid refuse
Mysore awaits fuel, perfume from plastic waste
Preethi Nagaraj, Mysore, June 9, DH News Service:
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC), basking in glory after the city was recently adjudged the second cleanest in India, is planning to turn the place into a “zero waste” zone.
The corporation plans to set up a manufacturing unit in the heritage city to turn plastic into crude oil; with the spin-offs being diesel, kerosene, wax and even a small quantity of perfume. And when this happens, Mysore will be the first city in the State to have a recycling system for plastic waste.
The project is proposed to be set up at Vidyaranyapuram on a three-acre plot and on a 30-year lease. It will be established on private-public partnership, with zero investment from the MCC.
It will use a technological process called polymer energy system. The process may offer a long-term solution to the problem of the disposal of municipal solid waste in cities.
Urban planners see it as one of the three prongs of waste-disposal method; the other two being conversion of biodegradable waste such as kitchen and vegetable waste into compost and the non-biodegradable waste used in landfills.
Segregated plastic waste will be collected from areas in sealed containers and be brought to the site for further processing. Mysore, which generates about 20-22 tonnes of plastic everyday, plans to start with processing 10 tonnes at initial stages and increase further to achieve full recycling of plastic waste everyday.
Recycling cost
The MCC will sell plastic waste to the unit and the money will be used to meet the cost of recycling in the process. The council has invited expressions of interest for the project.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raykar said: “We first saw the demonstration of this technology in Chennai at the unit owned by TVS. We felt this is ideal for a city like Mysore which is witnessing unprecedented growth.”
The proposal was tabled at the last meeting of the council. Corporators received it enthusiastically, Raykar said.
Another positive aspect of the recycling project is that it will employ scores of specially abled persons in the city. Over 1,000 people have sought job opportunities at the department of welfare for physically handicapped.
The know-how
Polymer Energy System uses catalytic pyrolysis to efficiently convert plastic (primarily polyolefins) into crude oil.
The output crude oil is high-grade and can be further processed in a refinery or used to power low-rpm machines such as electric generation turbines.
This system is modular in design. A single module can produce up to 775 litres of crude oil for every tonne of typical plastic waste processed. TVS, the potential technology supplier, has set up a similar unit in Chennai.

engineer.akash June 10th, 2010, 05:03 PM A new Disneyland-type amusement park underway for Mysore
Thursday, 10 June 2010 19:12
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has embarked on a mission to create 'Mysore Entertainment Centre' which will incorporate the best features of Disneyland plus a heritage town on the lines of the one in Boston (USA), some features of famous wildlife parks in South Africa as well as Delhi's Pragati Maidan and Hauz Khas (Artists Village).
The Mysore Entertainment Centre (MEC) is the brainchild of MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar and will cost of Rs. 200 crore to build. Speaking to SOM, Raikar said the project would be located 16 kms from the city on HD Kote road, near Rayanakere, on 70 acres of land. The State Highway 33 runs adjacent to the project area.
According to Raikar, he has been pursuing this vision for the past three years and had met Central and State officials as well as Ministers. He said the former District-in-Charge Minister Shobha Karandlaje told him: 'go ahead and complete the project!'
Raikar said the project would be developed on a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer framework. MCC has followed a single stage bidding process for the selection of the private developer.
The preliminary project development process will begin only after Aug. 2010, after prospective bidders have placed their bid.
Raikar said the MEC would have several zones. Close to the entrance will be a water sports pavilion, go-karting track and a fairytale castle such as the ones in Disneyland. Further along, as the visitor goes clockwise, is the parking lot. Yoga and heritage Spa will be located in a secluded grove. Further up will be the extreme sports centre with facilities for bungee jumping, skate boarding and wall climb units. The exhibition area comes next with state-of-the-art consumer and professional business expo areas.
A world class multiplex with a high end retail frontage is also planned. There will be a 3-star hotel and convention centre and food court with stress on multi-cuisine food outlets. Further along a heritage centre will come up. It showcases traditional architecture of Hampi, Halebeedu, Mysore etc. There will be a scaled down model of Gol Gumbaz and Halebeedu. One of the characteristics of this heritage zone is that the persons who work here will be dressed in period costumes. There will be replicated chariots of Vijayanagar era.
The art and craft zone will have an amphitheatre for folk and other traditional folk songs and dance performances and retail shops. This zone will have residential units for crafts persons on a temporary basis.
The Nature Zone will have flora and fauna centre that will be representative of the bio-diversity of BR Hills, Bandipur and Nagarahole. There will also be a giant 3D theatre for wildlife film shows. The Nature Zone will also have a high vaulted tropical forest butterfly park. From the end of art and craft zone will be a nature walk that will resemble a typical Western Ghats ecosphere complete with avifauna and flora. There will also be a man-made water body with seating arrangements around for viewing water-birds. Near the exit will be the gaming centre with bowling alleys and snooker parlors.
SOM also spoke to Manjunath Shekar of Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited who are the project advisors. Manjunath said the various segments as well as what is to be developed will depend on the consensus arrived at by the MCC and private developer.
Manjunath said, "We have suggested a vaulted butterfly park, but the developer may also set up a rare Western Ghats orchids park." He added, ‘You see, it has also to be profitable for him. But the entry fee will still be much lower and it will be applicable only to certain zones.'

Hope it materializes
engineer.akash June 11th, 2010, 07:55 PM Experts will meet to focus on heritage conservation
TNN, Jun 11, 2010, 09.24pm IST
MYSORE: Experts in urban planning and conservation will be in the city on Saturday focusing on heritage conservation. They will concentrate on the provisions of 74th amendment to the Constitution which granted constitutional recognition to the urban local bodies tasking it with urban governance.
The University of Mysore's Institute of Development Studies has teamed with the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), to host the meet at the university. The experts will also focus on education during the one-day meet.
"Good governance is characterized by principles of sustainability, subsidiary and priority, equity, transparency and accountability and civic engagement. We are focusing on these issues in the wake of the increasing focus on urban governance," ITPI chief D S Meshram stated on Friday.
The ITPI pointed out that by 2051, half of Indian polulation will be in urban settlements and the number of metropolitan cities (those which have over one million population) will jump from 35 to 75. The urban centres will rise to 6,000. Due to this rapid increase in urban population, cities are unable to fill the demand-supply gap with respect to jobs, housing and utilities, infrastructure facilities and services all of which are crucial for good governance, it stated.
The ITPI said the experts will deliberate on the heritage conservation which not only includes man-made heritage sites like historical monuments but also natural heritage such as rivers, lakes and forests.

engineer.akash June 12th, 2010, 02:36 PM MASSIVE DEBRIS REMOVAL DRIVE BEGINS
Mysore, June 12 (KK&KMC)- An ambitious project to make the city debris-free was launched on a massive scale this morning.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/7483/image11asp.jpg
The two-day intensive drive to remove debris and other wastes piled along the roads all over the city was formally launched by Mayor Sandesh Swamy at Doddakere Maidan (near Dasara Exhibition Grounds) in the presence of Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath, MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar, Corporators, officials and others.
The debris-removal operation involved 70 JCB excavators and 120 tipper-trucks, provided free of cost by Mysore City Lorry Owners’ Association and Mysore City Contractors’ Association. Mysore City Corporation (MCC) only has to pay for the labour-wages for the two-day operation.
Speaking on the occasion, Sandesh Swamy, who initiated the programme, said that all efforts are being made to retain the title of Swachcha Nagar recently bestowed upon Mysore (second cleanest city in India after Chandigarh), by keeping the city clean and debris-free.
"The MCC collects cess for debris removal from house-owners before construction of their houses. As such, it is the duty of the MCC to remove the debris,” said Sandesh Swamy and added that the citizens need not pay for the ongoing debris-removal drive. He also thanked the Lorry Owners’ Association President B. Kodandaram for providing the lorries and Contractors’ Association President Chandrashekharaiah for providing the excavators.
In reply to a query from the press about the MCC’s lapse in debris-removal in the past, the Mayor said that the process is being regularised now and a project worth Rs. 15 crore has been submitted to the State Government for approval. "The proposed project comprises 12 packages of civic works namely debris-removal, cleaning of drains, garbage management, evicting footpath encroachments, disposal of animal carcasses, etc.," he said.
The excavators and trucks were later taken by the Corporators to their respective wards where debris and other wastes were loaded onto lorries, transported to city’s outskirts and dumped in the low-lying areas in Bogadi, Outer Ring Road, Udayagiri and other places. Today’s operation will last till 6 pm and tomorrow, the drive will begin from 6 am to 6 pm.

engineer.akash June 12th, 2010, 02:38 PM SIX-LANING OF OUTER RING ROAD: WORK IN PROGRESS
Rs. 219 cr. for 32.21 km stretch of road
Mysore, June 12 (RK&KMC)- The work on upgrading the Outer Ring Road (ORR) of the city to six-lane road is in progress.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5910/imageaspg.jpg
Fast emerging as the second biggest city after Bangalore in the State, Mysore, also a popular tourist destination, is witnessing increase in the number of vehicles. Keeping this in mind, the ORR was constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 crore by MUDA during the tenure of Sandesh Nagaraj (presently MLC) as the Chairman.
The four-lane stretch of 7.49 kms distance on the eastern side linking the Mysore-Bangalore highway and the two-lane stretch of 24.72 kms distance will be upgraded to six-lane road (for a total distance of 32.21 kms) under the project.
The ORR upgrading work has been taken up at a total cost of Rs. 21,902.50 lakh under the JnNURM project, for which the Central Government grant is Rs. 17,522 lakh while the State Government and the MUDA will chip in Rs. 2,190.25 lakh each. Presently, the Centre has released Rs. 4,380.49 lakh as the first instalment while the State Govt. and MUDA have released Rs. 547.56 lakh each.
The first phase of the work involves clearing the debris dumped on the right side of the ORR, filling low-lying areas with debris and soil, levelling the elevated portions, etc.
MUDA being the project implementing agency, contract has been awarded to KMC Private Limited, Bangalore, in four packages, with three years’ maintenance contract. The work, started since April 12 last, is expected to complete by Feb. 2011. Though Rs. 219 crore was earmarked for the project, the construction company has come forward to complete the work for Rs. 210.84 crore, it is learnt.
A sum of Rs. 2 crore will be spent on removing the existing metal streetlight poles from the road side and erecting them at the centre of the ORR and another Rs. 1 crore for shifting the concrete poles, work on which will be taken up under CHE-SCom supervision.
MUDA has prepared a Detailed Project Report for the stretch of ORR from Nanjangud Road to Bannur Road, which remains incomplete owing to land acquisition problems.
The Report will be submitted to the State Govt. shortly for approval, it is learnt. Once approved, the ORR would form a complete circle of six-lanes, for which another Rs. 100 crore is needed.
Salient features of the project
Three-lane roads of 11 metres width on either side of existing ORR, 5.50 metre wide service road, 3 metre wide central median, 1.50 metre wide intermediate median on either sides, utility crossing at every 500 metre distance, bus shelters at every 2 kms distance, 3.10 metre wide footpath on either sides, street lights along the median, paving blocks and protection works at the junctions and inter-junctions, 1x1.20 metre intermediate drains, 69 CD works and three bridges.

engineer.akash June 15th, 2010, 03:24 PM Tree ownership rights to growers may boost green cover
By Our Staff Correspondent
http://www.hindu.com/2004/08/26/images/2004082610690301.jpg
The Forest Department's scheme to vest tree ownership rights with growers will help increase the green cover in Mysore.
MYSORE, AUG. 25. A unique plan, which envisages vesting tree ownership rights with growers, is expected to help increase the green cover of Mysore.
The plan was conceived by the State Government and is being implemented in the city by the Mysore Forest Division. It is a unique effort to promote community participation in enhancing the green cover of the city and to combat pollution. As per the scheme, individuals interested in growing trees may plant them on the vacant spot opposite their houses and on pavements. The Forest Department will launch the programme in Vijaynagar Extension. It will be extended to other residential areas in the city later.
Those interested in the scheme may contact the Forest Department on ph: 2483853 between 10.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. before August 28.
Project
The project will complement another scheme launched a few years ago, which envisaged participation by the Government and private institutions in the city. As per the project, the Forest Department identified open spaces belonging to institutions and planted 24,000 saplings as neither the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) nor the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) evinced interest in arresting the depleting green cover of Mysore.
This was in addition to the urban greening programme, which was launched in new residential areas such as Bogadi, Ramakrishna Nagar, Sharadadevi Nagar, Kuvempunagar, etc. Likewise, the Forest Department identified government, public sector and private sector institutions for participation in the greening programme and 5,000 saplings were planted on the land belonging to the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF).
`Green Mysore'
The Forest Department's latest venture of vesting tree ownership rights with the growers is reckoned to be a step in the right direction to enthuse people to plant saplings. A similar plan to increase the green cover of Mysore has been mooted by non-governmental organisations which wish to dovetail their activities by including students and educational institutions in their endeavour to "Green Mysore.''
The vision document of the Mysore Agenda Task Force has similar plans for greening the residential areas under the MCC and the MUDA. These efforts comes at a time when the civic authorities in Mysore have a formidable challenge to arrest the erosion of green cover and maintain the city's lung space. The "Green Mysore'' campaign envisaged by the Forest Department, non-governmental organisations and the MATF is reckoned to be timely as the MUDA plans to create five more residential areas in the city. The "Green Mysore'' project is also crucial in view of the growing encroachment around the Chamundi Hills.
Planned growth
Mysore was the first city in Asia to take up planned development resulting in enviable amount of lung space and open areas in the form of parks, gardens and forests.
The City Improvement Trust Board (CITB), constituted by Nalvudi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in 1903, and the visionary diwans who worked under him, conceived well-built roads and aesthetically pleasing buildings which earned Mysore an international reputation for urban planning. The reputation was intact till late 1970s and mid 1980s after which the urban decay set in.
With a decline in the management capability of the civic authorities, the landscape of Mysore began to alter beyond recognition. The MUDA's latest plan to create five more residential areas will leave an indelible mark on the landscape of Mysore with erosion of the city's green cover and obliteration of its lung space.:ohno:
Areas such as D. Devaraja Urs Road, JLB Road, Sayyaji Rao Road, Irwin Road and Ashoka Road are choking owing to pollution, and only a conscious decision to increase the green cover would help Mysore regain its glory.

engineer.akash June 16th, 2010, 05:30 PM Falcon Tyres to expand Mysore facility
BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Kolkata June 16, 2010, 0:27 IST
Falcon Tyres, part of the Rs 3,000-crore Ruia Group, intends on spending over Rs 800 crore this fiscal to undertake an expansion of its Mysore unit and establish another greenfield facility in Uttarakhand, which will hike the tyre maker's production capacity to 2.3 million pieces per month. The firm, along with its subsidiary Monotona Tyres, currently produces 1.3 million pieces every month. Subsequent to the expansion, which is likely to cost at least Rs 300 crore, monthly production is expected to touch 1.8 million pieces.
At the same time, another newly-formed subsidiary of Falcon Tyres is to set up a new factory at Uttarakhand, with an initial monthly capacity of 500,000 pieces. This new facility is to entail an investment of about Rs 500 crore.
“The Uttarakhand plant will supply to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) such as Hero Honda, which have their factory in the area. I am hopeful that the plant will be operational by the end of this fiscal,” Ruia Group chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia said, on the sidelines of Dunlop India's annual general meeting, here today.
With a total capacity of 2.3 million pieces per month, Ruia claimed, the group would become the biggest manufacturer of two and three-wheeler tyres globally. On the status of Dunlop India, the country's oldest tyre manufacturer which the Ruia group acquired in 2005, he said that production would be stablised at 30 tonnes per day and subsequently, would be taken up to 60-70 tonnes per day by the end of the fiscal.
“At Dunlop India, we hope to achieve a turnover of Rs 550 crore this fiscal,” Ruia added. In 2009-10, the firm's income had stood at Rs 180.70 crore.

UNIQUE DESIGN:The gazebo in Kuppanna Park in Mysore is being restored to its old charm.
MYSORE: Come Dasara, Kuppanna Park near Hardinge Circle will have a new look.
The park, which was in a shambles for the last several years owing to poor maintenance, is getting a grand makeover, and the gazebo, which gives an identity to the park with its unique design and stained-glass roof and side panels, is being restored to its old charm.
Spread across an area of 12 acres in the heart of the city, the park, which usually hosts kennel shows, is getting a facelift under the special grants sanctioned to the city by the Chief Minister. The restoration is divided into three phases and the first-phase works which entail developing lawns and planting flowering plants have been done.
Right artist
Rame Gowda, Assistant Director, Horticulture, Mysore City Corporation, told The Hindu that the right person for restoring the gazebo was found recently. The artist, Sri Hari, from T. Narsipur, whose forefathers were in involved in paintings on glass during the times of Mysore kings, has been entrusted with the work.
“Belgium glass has been procured for the work. The original paintings will be recreated on them,” Mr. Gowda said.
A musical fountain on the lines of the one at Brindavan Gardens will also come up at the park in addition to a rock garden.
“The work orders have been issued and we are confident of completing the works before Dasara,” he said.
Facilities
An amphitheatre, an elevated dais (band stand), a small restaurant and a vehicle parking area are also part of the development work.
The musical fountain is coming up at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. “The musical fountain is likely to be ready by August,” he said.
Sources in the MCC said the work on the park was launched about eight months ago. Though the work began at brisk pace, it slowed down later.
“Identifying a suitable artist for restoring the gazebo took time. We consulted the Mysore Palace authorities to find the right artist. Finally we found the right person who is said to be related to the people who worked on the original structure (gazebo).”

engineer.akash June 19th, 2010, 09:40 AM Karnataka to upgrade sports infrastructure
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore June 19, 2010, 0:19 IST
Three projects, including one relating to sports, were set in motion in Mysore recently. The district stadium will be developed with infrastructural facilities at a cost of Rs 20 crore for conduct of sports on regular basis. The 400 metre track will be upgraded into a synthetic track at Rs 6 crore cost, while the hockey field will have astro turf at Rs 3.25 crore.
Funds for these two proposals have been provided in the current year budget, according to District Youth Services Officer Ramesh.
An alternative site has been acquired for the construction of a swimming pool after resolving the dispute over the land where the pool was earlier proposed. The Mysore Development Authority had provided Rs 50 lakh for the construction of the swimming pool.
Mysore Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who reviewed the three projects on Monday, asked the sports authorities to prepare a Rs 2 crore plan and estimates for the construction of the pool on modern standards.
He also directed them to lay wooden floor and improve lighting in the indoor stadium located in the sports complex and complete the works before the forthcoming Dasara celebrations.
He asked the education department officials to make use of the stadium regularly for the students of the government schools.
The second project which relates to the development of Kala Mandira, venue of cultural programmes. A Rs 1.81 crore scheme has been sent to the state government for approval. Overall improvement include false ceiling works costing Rs 41 lakh, which will be completed in about a week, Rs 48 lakh for speaker system and Rs one crore for lighting, according to Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Manjappa.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the officials to complete the works before Dasara taking experts’ help so that the Kala Mandira is available for Dasara programmes.
The third projects relates to the Bal Bhavan, the centre for children’s activities in Banni Mantap. A comprehensive development project costing Rs 4.05 crore has been prepared under private public participation. The children’s train will become operational in a month, Women and Child Welfare Department Assistant Director N R Vijay said.
Harsh Gupta, who reviewed the proposal, asked the officials to adopt the Hyderabad Bal Bhavan model for the Mysore Bal Bhavan development and suggested a Rs 25 lakh be spent for immediate works.

engineer.akash June 23rd, 2010, 04:32 PM SWEDISH CO. TO SET UP UNIT IN CITY TO PRODUCE GAS FROM SEWAGE
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9523/imageaspw.jpg
Mysore, June 23 (KK&JP) - The Mysore City Corporation has entered into an MoU with the Swedish Municipality of Eskilstuna Kommun to set up methane biogas manufacturing units in three locations from sewage waste. A Power Point presentation in this regard was made this morning by the three-member team from Eskilstuna Energi & Miljo owned by Eskilstuna Kommun (Municipality) before the MCC Commissioner K.S Raikar, JNNURM Superintendent Engineer Suresh Babu, MCC Health Officer Dr. Nagaraju, MCC Environmental Officer Rekha and other officials at MCC office. At the time of going to the press, the meeting with the MCC Commissioner was in progress. The Swedish team comprising Carinna Farm, Ronauld Alsboro and Sven Svundkist had arrived in the city yesterday.
The team was taken to the sewage treatment plants at Kesare and Rayanakere by JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu, Executive Engineer Govindraju and other officials. The team also visited the Mysore Zoo and discussed the possibility of setting up a bio-methane gas unit there. It is learnt, the methane biogas units will be set up by the Swedish Company and also maintained by it. There will be no financial burden on the MCC in this project.
One of the positive outcomes of the Swedish team's visit to the Zoo was that the Swedish team might try and get some animals from Sweden to the Mysore Zoo under the 'Zoo Animal Exchange' programme.
Zoo Deputy Director K.D. Belliappa has also made an appeal to the team in this regard.
Later, the team visited the Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hill and Somanatha Temple. The Swedish team is staying at the Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel.
Meanwhile, SOM learns that in many of the Municipalities in Sweden, bio-methane gas is used in multifarious ways to be of benefit to the consumer.
JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu, who spoke to SOM said," It will take a while for the project to come to fruit."
Earlier, Mayor Sandesh Swamy spoke to SOM and said that the proposed biomethane gas project would serve as a model for similar such projects across the State.
Sandesh Swamy said it would take some time for the pilot project to come up as this was a feasibility study and the Swedish team would make their final report after going back.
Earlier, JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu told SOM that the team from Sweden was concerned about the adaptation and transfer of technology. The technology that was being used by the company back in Sweden needed to be adapted to suit the conditions here and the various probabilities would be looked into before a decision can be taken.
About the Swedish Co.
Eskilstuna is a town of 93,000 inhabitants by Lake Mälaren, approximately 100 kilometres west of Stockholm in Sweden. The company, Eskilstuna Energi & Milj", is owned by the municipality and builds infrastructure and supplies the utilities for living and working in Eskilstuna. This company provides electricity, heating, cooling, water and sewage, broadband facilities, refuse handling and recycling services to the people of the municipality and at the same time meeting the environmental needs.
According to the Aksilstuna Energi& Miljo, the company, that is setting up the unit in Mysore, Biogas can be produced from a wide range of waste products; from sludge gathered in wastewater treatment plants, manure, food industry waste products, or from the organic component of household waste. The digester sludge can be returned provided hygiene standards are met, to farmland as a fertiliser, thereby decreasing the need for artificial fertilisers.
Biogas can be burned to produce heat and electricity. It can also be upgraded to biome-thane. Biomethane has the same chemical content as natural gas of fossil origin. This means that gas-powered motor vehicles can be operated on both biomethane and natural gas thus avoiding pollution by petrol and diesel-run vehicles.
In fact in Delhi and other metros, public transport buses are run on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). With bio methane, the same advantage can be had, say the experts.

TNN, Jun 23, 2010, 10.32pm IST
MYSORE: The leading tier-II city that bagged second slot in the nation-wide survey on sanitation, is aiming to put its wastes to generate fuel.
The eco-friendly bio-gas will be used for power generation and also as fuel for public transport vehicles.
An expert team from Sweden on Wednesday did a little ground work visiting the solid waste management plant and sewerage plants in the city. The MCC, which has entered into an MoU with a Swedish municipality to convert the wastes into fuel, extended the data needed to work out the action plan.
The Swedish team, led by Carina Farm, met the corporation commissioner K S Raykar and discussed the details with him. The team comprises Ronald Alsbro and Svante Sundquist, which is here as a follow-up visit to the five-member team from the MCC that was in Sweden a year ago. The MCC and the Eskilstuna municipality have agreed to help each other in maintaining the city under the sister-city concept.
The team collected data like amount of solid waste generated daily, its composition, segregation and how it is presently handled. It also took note of the locations where these plants are located. This information will be used to set-up the bio-gas plant, to produce methane, said superintending engineer Suresh Babu.
The MCC has requested the Swedish civic body to extend the technology and also to assist them in setting up the plant. The team will work out the details and come back by August, the SE explained. The amount of methane produces and the ways of using it will be worked out by the Swedish experts, he stated.
The team visited sewage treatment plants at Kesare and Rayanakere and to solid waste treatment plant at Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram.
According to the SE, the Swedish municipality has expertise in the bio-gas sector and is presently operating its fleet of 45 city buses on methane. The Swedish town has a population of 1 lakh and is handing its waste efficiently, he stated. The bio-gas is also sold, since it is produced in excess there, he said. Eskilstuna is located south-east of Sweden.
The idea is to efficiently use the solid waste generated in the city and to use it for fuel generation so that dependence on the electricity is lessened. This comes amidst Mysore getting the Centre's project to make its street-lighting system operate on solar power.

engineer.akash June 24th, 2010, 01:40 PM BRIDGES AND DRAIN CONSTRUCTION AT TRINETHRA CIRCLE IN PROGRESS
Mysore, June 24 (RK&KMC)- The residents of Mahadeshwara Layout, especially the traders having shops near Trinethra Circle at Gokulam in city, who used to face severe hardships during heavy rains for want of proper drainage system, are a relieved lot now, thanks to the ongoing bridge and drainage construction work in the area.
Rainwater used to gush into the shops and houses in the low-lying area along the road near Trinethra Circle linking Gokulam Road, Vijayanagar Second Stage and Kumbarakoppal since there is no storm-water drain along the narrow road linking the Circle and Vijayanagar Second Stage.
Moreover, the road, being very narrow, witnesses frequent traffic jams and accidents at the Circle, since there is too little space for vehicles to turn.
Taking note of the multiple problems at the Circle and on the roads linking it, the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has taken up the construction work of two bridges and a drain, along with road-widening work, at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh.
The drain, to be constructed for a length of 140 metres, on completion will link to the storm-water drain near Kumbarakoppal, which in turn joins the bigger sewer drain.
The project is being supervised by Zonal Officer Rangaswamy and Asst. Engineer Manjunath, as per the directions of MUDA Commissioner, Executive and Superintending Engineers.
