Mysore, Sept.16 (JP)- Software Paradigms International (SPI) set the stage for expanding their Hebbal campus with the ground breaking ceremony (Guddali Puja) performed by Ashok Kumar Manoli, Principal Secretary, IT&BT, this morning at the SPI campus in Hebbal.

After the invocation, Ashok Kumar Manoli and City Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal unveiled the foundation stone of the new campus following which Manoli and other guests were taken on a tour of SPI facilities.

Girish Karunakaran, Vice- President (IT operations-SPI), speaking to SOM, said that with the changing challenges in the IT sector, SPI was poised to make the quantum jump both in services and manpower. SPI currently has around 1,000 employees and they will be recruiting another 2,500 by the year 2012.

Karunakaran also said that SPI was a 24X7 business that used the latest VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and data conferencing technologies.

The group is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia (USA), with operational facilities at Toronto, Canada and Mysore. There is also a branch office of the Mysore division at Mangalore.

Foundation stone laid for SPICity project in Mysore

MYSORE: Describing Mysore as the second most important destination for information technology in the State after Bangalore, the Principal Secretary to the Government on IT, BT and ST, Ashok Kumar C. Manoli, said the Government was now focussing on dispersal of IT and development of tier II cities.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for Software Paradigm Infotech's SPICity project here on Thursday.

Mr. Manoli said Mysore with 53 companies, including Infosys, had contributed Rs. 1,000 crore worth of software exports during the last financial year. Mysore had emerged as the most important and potential IT destination after Bangalore mainly because of its close proximity to the State capital.

Mr. Manoli said there were distinct advantages of moving to tier II cities such as Mysore as research and analysis had proved that the operating costs, including salaries to employees, were down by 36 per cent, which had to be capitalised. The new campus in the Hebbal Industrial Area would have a built up area of 85,000 sq ft and create 1,000 new jobs taking the SPI's global employee strength to 2,500.

He said the State was now promoting BPO firms in rural areas and had established 16 such units in various places, including Srirangapatana and Gundlupet near Mysore. This has been done primarily to provide employment to the rural youth. Similarly, under the e-PCO scheme, the State had revived the defunct PCOs to provide opportunities in self-employment and augment income generation of PCO owners. BPO and e-PCO would contribute more to IT penetration in rural areas, he added.

Sunil Agarwal, Commissioner of Police, who presided over the function, spoke about how the Police Department had harnessed IT to further its efficacy and remarked in a lighter vein that the police could not continue to rely on its age-old hardware – the lathi.

He said Karnataka was among the first States to have cyber police almost 10 years ago and there were plans to help people file FIR from home with the help of IT.

Sid Mookerji, Chief Executive Officer of SPI, said the new complex would become operational in 18 months and had been necessitated to accommodate the growing requirements of the organisation in terms of new clients, acquisitions fuelled by growth.

He said SPI had achieved a year-on-year growth rate of 69 per cent over the last few years despite recession and slowdown and had established its presence in Singapore, Canada, U.K., Australia and the U.S.

Mr. Mookerji said SPI's focus on retail market was a major differentiator which enabled the company to establish itself and grow.

John Cook, Chairman, and senior officials of SPI were present.

'CORPN. TO CONTINUE ROAD REPAIR UNDER POLICE SECURITY'

Sequel to protest against scarring of Sayyaji Rao Road stretch
http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/8564/roadinmys.jpg

Mysore, Sept. 17 (JP)-The protest against the scarring of the Sayyaji Rao Road from Agrahara to K.R. Circle has made the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) even more determined to carry out the work for getting the road ready in time for Dasara.

"We will take Police protection to continue and finish the work in time," said Mallesh, Superintending Engineer, MCC. It is learnt, some groups are planning to file a civil suit in the local court to stop the MCC from carrying out road asphalting work on the grounds that it is a heritage road.

Speaking to SOM, Mallesh said the road repair work was taken up only after consultation with technocrats and Heads of Department of Civil Engineering in two of the City's engineering colleges. The road scarring work is necessary so that the re-asphalting work can be taken up, he asserted.

"This road and several other roads in the City’s arteries are very old with only minor reinforcement work being done now and then. When these roads were laid the traffic was of low intensity. It was more of light vehicular traffic. The situation has changed now and will continue to change as the city grows. The density and intensity of traffic is much more and the load-bearing capacity of the road and several other roads gets reduced," Mallesh said.

Referring to the protests by activists of Kavalu Pade yesterday, Mallesh said he could not understand the reason for the protest. "What do they mean by heritage road? This is an old road. Being old does not make it a heritage road."

"Let them say what we are doing is technically wrong. Merely claiming that it is a heritage road is not enough. We have consulted experts in the field. And what we are doing by way of scarring prior to re-asphalting the roads is technically correct," he said adding "We have identified over 133 main and arterial roads that need bituminous reinforcement work to be done. If we are being stopped by protests, how can they expect the City to look beautiful?"

Mallesh said there seems to be vested groups with their own agenda and it was sad no one seemed to be interested in beautifying the City.

When SOM asked why there was delay in some of the road works, Mallesh said that bituminous asphalting requires dry weather and the rains in the past week have delayed laying of bitumen. "All we need is dry weather and we can work in the night on a war-footing."

MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar was not available for comment as he was attending a Dasara meeting in Bangalore.

It is great to hear about flights finally being operated in Mysore. It is a boon for the city's growth and has also made it easy for the tourists to arrive in the city hassle-free!! I hope the flights to other cities will not land in Bangalore. It will increase the travel time. Moreover the fuel consumption increases with additional landing and take-offs. So I think having direct flights to Chennai and Mumbai will make the fare decrease a little. Maybe the operators are unsure about the air travel density from Mysore to those cities.

Mysore, Sept. 18 (KMC&ACP)- The Sub-Urban Bus Stand, located on the Bangalore-Nilgiri Road in city, newly renovated under the JNNURM, will be inaugurated by Transport Minister R. Ashok at 10 am tomorrow.

The hi-tech bus stand built on the 6.20 acre plot of land at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore. The actual floor area of the complex is 17,776 square metres, comprising a cellar, ground floor and two-storeys. The cellar will be used for parking 450 four-wheelers and 1500 two-wheelers.

The bus stand has 44 bus-bays and 11 platforms, with 450 steel chairs. A total of 2053 buses will be plying from this bus stand to various destinations in the State.

Signboards displaying buses' arrival and departure timings, their routes and other details are being placed at all the 11 platforms.

Works on the information centre, reservation counter, bus pass counter, counter for booking buses on contract basis and other counters on the ground floor are on a war-footing.

"Most of the works on amenities like toilets, cloak room, lounge are in the finishing stages," said an engineer in-charge of the works and added that works on the first and second floor may take a couple of months' time to complete. The complex will also have a lift, ramp and other amenities for the convenience of aged and handicapped persons, the engineer said.

No auto stand yet

Though the hi-tech bus stand building is ready for inauguration, other vital aspects like an auto-rickshaw stand (preferably pre-paid), orderly parking of vehicles and traffic control at the bus stand's entry and exit gates are yet to be considered.

Spanking new facility:The mofussil bus terminus has been modernised at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore.

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation is gearing up to handle the rush during the 10-day Dasara festivities next month. It will commission the mofussil bus terminus, modernised at a cost of Rs. 23.53 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), here on Sunday.

Minister for Transport R. Ashok will inaugurate the terminus located on 6.2 acres of land on the Bangalore-Nilgiris Road. Work on the terminus commenced last year and was expedited to ensure that it was ready in time for the festivities.

This is the KSRTC's third project to be commissioned under JNNURM under the Transport Master Plan.

The modernisation of the terminus was necessitated to accommodate more buses, provide for easy flow of traffic and provide more amenities to passengers.

Officials said the terminus was spaciously built with 11 platforms and 44 bus bays and that parking space was available for 1,200 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers.

Boards displaying the arrival and departure timings of buses, routes and other details were being erected at the platforms. Final touches were being given to other facilities such as counters for booking tickets, booking buses on contract basis, issuing bus passes and so on.

Work on the first and second floor is still under way and is likely to be completed soon. An elevator, ramps and other facilities will be provided for the convenience of elderly people and physically challenged persons.

Huge revenue expected

The KSRTC is expected to generate huge revenue by leasing out 14,477 sq. m of commercial space on terminus premises. The space is expected to be allotted to restaurants, juice stalls, stationery shops, bank extension counters and cyber cafes. Bids have already been invited.

MYSORE: There's one thing residents and tourists coming to Mysore will agree on - the bumpy ride they are subject when travelling in the city. The roads are badly in need of maintenence but the authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to the fact.

Almost every stretch connecting to the city, is battered with potholes. At traffic junctions, the condition poses a huge inconvenience to both commuters and pedestrians.

The rain that has been lashing the city over the last few weeks only made the situation worse. Roads in the central business district like Irwin road, Sayyaji Rao road, Bangalore- Nilgiri road and Ashoka road have become unfit for riding.

Taxpayers can only watch their money go to waste as it has become the norm to asphalt the city roads ahead of Dasara every year but not have the effect last.

An official, on condition of anonymity, admitted that the potholes were the result of sub-standard work: "That is what has been happening all these years. The officials get grants during Dasara. Instead of ensuring it is utilized for the welfare of the public and using the money for quality work, it is misused. If the work is done properly, the tar will not come off soon. The absence of a drainage system makes it worse."

"Civic authorities may consider the alternate option of asphalting roads with a white topping which is in practice in foreign countries and in parts of India. Though slightly expensive, it has a higher life-expectancy," the engineer said.

When contacted, Mayor Sandesh Swamy said: "They are through with the tenders for asphalting city roads but the rain god who is playing hide-and-seek for several days now, has to show mercy on us. That is why the work has been delayed. But he expressed confidence in being able to complete the projects within two weeks if the sky remains clear."

The mayor claimed they have issued tenders to asphalt roads in all the 65 wards in three phases. Four months back, they had given tenders worth Rs8.9 cr for 133 roads of which 20% works are over. Secondly, Rs22 cr has been set aside for 233 important roads across the city. Now, with Dasara around the corner, they have given tenders worth Rs5.12 cr for asphalting 37 major roads like the five-km Dasara route, Devaraja Urs road and others.

MINISTER OPENS BUS STAND AS DASARA GIFT

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/4989/imageasp.jpg
Mysore, Sept. 19 (KCU&KK)- Transport Minister R. Ashok inaugurated the renovated hi-tech Sub-Urban Bus Stand on Bangalore-Nilgiri Road here this morning, terming it as a Dasara gift for the tourists as the swanky bus stand is intended to provide best facilities to the travelling public.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashok pointed out that the bus stand, renovated under the JNNURM project, had several modern and unique features. He reiterated that it was renovated well in time, without compromising on any aspect, thanks to the good co-operation of Central and State Governments.

One ticket system

Ashok announced that a one-ticket system will be introduced soon wherein a person intending to travel to city by KSRTC bus from a distance of 60 to 70 km can buy a single ticket at the boarding point, travel inside the city too and get back, thus relieving of the hassle of finding a local transport.

Lok Sabha member H. Viswanath pointed out that another Rs. 1050 crore had been released under JNNURM and suggested to utilise the funds judiciously by selecting useful projects. He suggested to name the renovated bus stand after late Devaraj Urs and Sathagalli Satellite Bus Stand after late Azeez Sait.

Taking every one by surprise, Leader of Opposition Siddharamaiah was asked by Viswanath to preside over the function. He obliged and appreciated Ashok in accomplishing the task of renovating the bus stand in time.

PATCH WORK ON 37 ROADS IN CITY BEGINS ON A WAR-FOOTING

Mysore, Sept. 20 (KK&KMC)- The patch work of city's 37 roads have commenced on a war-footing since yesterday, said Mayor Sandesh Swamy and added that the works have been taken up by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) at a cost of Rs. 5.12 crore, under the Dasara grants.

"In addition, patch works of 133 roads in various residential layouts coming under 9 zones of the MCC have also been taken up at a cost of Rs. 8.90 crore," Swamy said, stating that the Jumboo Savari route, roads linking Hardinge Circle, Devaraj Urs Road, JLB road and other main roads in the city were taken up on a priority basis.

"If rains permit, we will make Mysore a pot-holes free city in a week's time," Swamy claimed, adding that another 267 road works will be taken up under the Dasara grants totaling Rs. 24 crore, once the rains stop.

The road from Ayurveda Circle to the Sub-Urban Bus Stand (Irwin Road) will be fully asphalted tonight if the rains permit, AC E. Thimmappa told SOM.

Recarpeting, repair at a cost of Rs. 27 crore

PWD begins filling potholes

Race to complete work in time for Dasara

MYSORE: With the much-awaited recarpeting and repair of roads set to begin here on Tuesday, residents and tourists may be spared nerve-wracking rides on pothole-ridden roads in time for Dasara.

The ‘muhurtha' for the launch of work costing Rs. 27 crore has been fixed for Tuesday as the rains blamed for the delay have receded considerably. The Mysore City Corporation had earlier said roadworks would be executed only if there was a dry spell of at least four days.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department that maintains some roads in the city began filling potholes on Monday. It is now the turn of the MCC to follow suit, in a race against time for the city to be ready for the ten-day long ‘nada habba' celebrations.

Speaking to The Hindu, MCC Commissioner K.S. Raykar said the work on recarpeting and filling potholes on 470 roads would begin simultaneously. Recarpeting would be done only on those roads that are badly damaged.

“The preparations have been done and the work may even begin from Monday evening as we have set our sights on completing the work at the earliest. We hope to finish the work in a week's time if the dry spell stays,” he said.

The MCC had come under criticism from residents here for being a “mute spectator” to the bad roads.

Minister in charge of Mysore district S. Suresh Kumar had faced questions from journalists at a recent media interaction on the corporation's “failure” in maintaining the roads. The Minister had promised to get them repaired once the rains stopped.

He said that the KSRTC will run package trips for Jaladarshini, Giridarshini, Mysore local sight seeing and to nearby places covering BR Hills, MM Hills, Gopalaswamy temple, Bandipur, Nagarhole, Abbi Falls, KRS, Chamundi hill, Bird sanctuary, Srirangapatna and other places.

Here's the status of KRS road from SOM

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH KRS ROAD?

Sir,

KRS Road, one of the main roads of Mysore, has been closed for traffic from Tharaasu Circle to Dasappa Circle for more than five months now. Despite the dislocation of all the northern bus routes and the tremendous hardship caused to the road-users, there has been very little in the way of protests from the public.

Most people in Mysore are not aware of what exactly is going on and why there is so much delay in reopening the road. Here is what we have found:

The Railways are building a new bridge for the Nanjangud line. To accommodate this bridge, KRS road had to be lowered. But there were water mains running just below the existing road and they had to be lowered too. The water mains were just one foot below the road surface and the pressure of the road traffic above caused them to leak significantly.

To solve this problem, the mains will be laid several feet below the new road surface to insulate them from the effects of road traffic. The lowering of the water mains and the road surface are the works that are going on now.

Now the cause for the delay: When they were in the process of lowering the water mains, they found one more main which they were not prepared for.

It is shocking that MCC did not know how many water mains were there below the road. These are not some half inch water pipes which could be laid by some unscrupulous customer without MCC knowing about it, but huge water mains which supply water to thousands of people.

Anyway, the surprise finding of an extra main has upset all the plans of MCC and is causing the delay. But since the Dasara is almost upon us and KRS road is a very important road, the pipe work is being suspended and the road filled up and brought to its original state. The road will again be dug up after Dasara and the work completed. Needless to say, the filling and redigging will cost a lot of extra money.

It is surprising that modern management techniques like Project Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM) are not being employed by MCC to manage any of its projects. These techniques are used worldwide to cut costs and time.

Will MCC identify the people responsible and punish them for causing time and cost overruns and causing extreme hardship to the citizens of Mysore?

Mysore will be first to get UID numbers
TNN, Sep 23, 2010, 03.54am IST

MYSORE: Mysoreans can take pride in being the first in the country to be assigned Unique ID numbers. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) tested its mechanism in April-May across Mysore and Tumkur districts.

Now that the Mysore district administration has an action plan in place, the UIDAI and Karnataka's e-governance department will allot Aadhaar, the 12-digit UID numbers, in October. UIDAI deputy director-general Ashok Dalwai on Wednesday said: ''The mechanism to allot the numbers has been fine-tuned here and the system is ready to allot the numbers, the first in India.''

Pilot projects were launched elsewhere in the nation. Andhra Pradesh is also ready to issue the numbers but it could take some more time. The enrollment agencies are ready and the ground work to set up enrollment centres is on, he explained. The protocol devised by Karnataka will be replicated across India. The allotment will start in mid-October and completed by the year-end. Simultaneously, Tumkur district will also be covered by year-end.

Paintings to prevent defacement

Special Correspondent

MCC has roped in artists, students of CAVA to paint Mysore city walls

MYSORE: Getting artists to paint pictures of beautiful scenery, animals or monuments on walls is a tried and tested method of preventing people from defacing the walls.

The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has embarked on this project with renewed gusto. Artists will paint walls adjoining places of tourist interest and underpasses.

Worst-affected areas

The worst-affected areas in Mysore include the walls adjoining the Lansdowne Building, area around the Jaganmohan Palace, opposite the Divisional Railway Manager's office and near the bus-stand along the Bangalore-Mysore Road.

The MCC has sought the assistance of artists and fine arts students from the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA).

Their brief is to paint places of tourist interest surrounding Mysore, including Somnathapur, so as to draw people's attention.

Mayor Sandesh Swamy, who visited one of the sites near the Mysore zoo, said that heritage precincts and compound walls of protected monuments had been exempted as the original structures could not be tampered with.

The authorities will have to pay Rs.120 for every 100 sq. ft painted.

Mysore airport takes wing

Dream come true More than a year after Ist phase of Mysore airport was completed, the regular flight operations will begin starting October 1, writes Eswar Singh K R

C ome October 1, the city of Mysore will script a new chapter in the Indian aviation industry, and also will strengthen its image as Tier II city. The newly built airport will become operational catering daily flight services. To start with, the services will be available for Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore route. Though, a small initiative, the airport becoming operational will usher a new season in the industry both in business and tourism.

And, the Kingfisher airlines is taking the pride in becoming the first airliner to start regular flight services from Mysore airport.

The state-of-the art infrastructure built at a cost of Rs 80 crore is all ready to greet the visitors on a daily basis, to fly. The Kingfisher airlines will run the Mysore-Bangalore-Chennai services six days a week, except on Saturdays.

A senior AAI official told City Herald that it was a good beginning for the airport. The Jet airways has also shown keen interest to start the regular flight services. They have placed orders for new ATR flights and may join the Kingfisher soon. The rest of the airliners would also fall in line once there is an improvement in the demand for the services, he said.

Jayakumar, noted travel and tour operator says that the city has a good potential for the air traffic. “Our office has received good inquiries locally. There are numerous bookings from offshore agents and travellers to avail flight services in coming days. Many of the bookings are inter-connecting travel scheduled from Mysore to Bangalore or Chennai. The connecting schedule links the travellers to major metros like Delhi, Mumbai and international towns and cities,” he said adding that there are good number of local travellers who took either road or rail services to reach Bangalore International airport on a regular daily basis and vice-versa.

The new flight services becoming a regular feature from Mysore- Bangalore- Chennai route will only reduce their travel time with a marginal increase in the expense, Jayakumar feels.

Finally, the long cherished dream of Mysoreans to fly will see taking wings on October 1 when the first of the regular flight service is expected to land at 12 noon. The flight will depart for Chennai via Bangalore at 2 pm to reach the destination at 5’O clock in the evening.

MYSORE: The state government will invite all member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to participate in this year's Dasara celebrations, Minister S A Ramadas said on Thursday.

Claiming that preparations for Dasara were proceeding on a grand scale, the minister said that efforts were being made to invite cultural troupes from across the country to perform during the festivities.

He was addressing the press for the first time after assuming charge as minister.

Ramadas said that the Dasara committee was mulling over organising a special show to mark the 400th anniversary of Dasara celebrations, which was first conducted way back in 1610 at Srirangapatna.

Historians, writers and intellectuals are expected to be invited to proffer their suggestions for conducting the programme.

Dasara thali at `20

Ramadas informed that around 50 hotels in Mysore have come forward to introduce 'Dasara thali' to tourists during the festival at a nominal charge of `20 per plate. He said that a meeting of about 70 corporators would be convened soon to discuss the strategies needed to publicise Dasara across all households in the city.

When asked about the lack of publicity for Dasara 2010, he said that the website ?? would be launched at the earliest and that campaigns would be intensified in the coming days, with the media to receive regular updates over the progress made.

"The committee is thinking on introducing 'Patrakarthara Dasara'," said Ramadas, who invited suggestions from presspersons about the same.

Promising that the issual of gold cards for this year's Dasara would proceed without hitches, the minister released posters for the festival.

ROAD REPAIR WORK ON KRS ROAD IN FULL SWING

Mysore, Sept. 25 (BRS&AB)- The stretch of Mysore-KRS road has finally seen relief from its miserable condition. The length of the road as well as its part in the vicinity of the overbridge close to Dasappa Circle have been bestowed attention by the departments concerned.

It had been reported in Star of Mysore that vehicle-users were forced to take to the Hunsur Road as a result of closure of the KRS Road for months together due to the irresponsibility of the officials.

It had also been reported that thousands of tourists to Mysore were put to hardship because of the slow progress of road work. Awakened by the report, the officials have launched repair works at a brisk pace.

The road repair work has been taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The civil works near Gokul Talkies on KRS Road has been taken up at a cost of Rs. 55 lakh. Asphalting of the stretch is being done by the Mysore City Corporation.

Speaking to Star of Mysore B.K. Suresh Babu, Superintending Engineer of JNNURM, disclosed that the civil work on the bridge near the talkies has been launched on Tuesday, and will be open to traffic after completion in three days.

The leak detected in the iconic Mysore Palace is being sealed with a proven waterproofing method to protect and preserve the structure.

With just a few days left for the start of the grand Dasara spectacle here and the Indo-Sarcenic style palace being the main attraction for tourists, Palace Board authorities, the caretakers of the monument, are leaving no stone unturned to plug the leak on the roof of the children's gallery and prevent dampness caused owing to incessant rain.
‘Effective method'

Engineers decided to use lightweight material to seal the leak on its “Madras terrace roof”, rather than using concrete, proofing tiles or resorting to chemical treatment.

“The cracked joints of the corrugated metal roofing are being sealed with the application of a waterproofing membrane with polyester reinforcement. It is a proven and effective method to seal leaks on the roofs of heritage structures. Moreover, it is lightweight and does not overload the structure,” explained engineer Shivakumar.

“The waterproofing work commenced over a week ago and will take a few more days to complete,” Mr. Shivakumar told The Hindu.

A Palace Board official described the work as regular maintenance work.

The conservation of the palace is usually done in consultation with heritage conservation experts such as the Regional Conservation Laboratory, Mysore. The maintenance expenditure of the Mysore Palace, which drew over 26 lakh tourists in 2009, is met mainly from gate collections. The annual expenditure touches Rs. 7 crore.

Light & sound show will feature Mysore’s history

Published: Monday, Sep 27, 2010, 9:16 IST
By Bosky Khanna | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

This year’s Dasara festivities in Mysore will have a fresh attraction — a light and sound show depicting the history of Mysore and the Wadiyar family.

Organised by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the show at Mysore palace is meant to introduce foreign tourists to the history of the state. The show would be on the lines of that held at Red Fort and Golkonda Fort, said Vinay Luthra, managing director, KSTDC.

The show will be of 20 to 30 minutes duration and revolve around folk artistes’ performance of a story told by the narrator to the accompaniment of music and lighting. Laser lights will also be used in the show.

The tickets will be priced at Rs40. Special seating arrangements are planned in the evening. Apart from the history, the light and sound show will also explain the Dasara festivities and their significance.

The KSTDC is also planning to introduce light and sound shows in Hampi and Kittur at a cost of Rs2 crore. The ‘Hampi by night’ show will be organised at some monuments in the world heritage site. The history of Kittur Rani Chennamma will be showcased in another show being planned as part of the Kittur festival from October 22-23. There will also be shows in Bijapur, Chitradurga fort and at Tipu Palace in Srirangapatna. Tenders will be called for staging the shows.

Luthra said the shows were proposed to start last year, but were delayed as the central government’s approval was awaited. Special measures would be taken to ensure that bright lights and cables did not affect the heritage sites, he said.

The KSTDC, with an aim to attract a large number of foreigners to the state, will organise special circuit tour of Bidar, Gulbarga and Bijapur. The project will be implemented at a cost of Rs4-5 crore.

It's final: first flight will land on Oct 1

TNN, Sep 27, 2010, 10.53pm IST

MYSORE: With the directorate general of civil aviation clearing the workable airport for commercial operations, the first flight will arrive in Mysore on October 1 around 12.45 pm. It will take off from Chennai and arrive in Mysore via Bangalore.

Mysore MP H Vishwanath, who heads the airport advisory committee, on Monday reviewed the preparedness for the commercial launch of the Airports Authority of India facility. Briefing reporters, he said Kingfisher Airlines will fly the first commercial flight from Bangalore to Mysore. It will operate flights for six days in a week except Saturdays.

AAI DGM Rajiv Gupta, in-charge of the Mysore facility, said the DGCA inspected the airport in early September and cleared it for operations but the slot clearance is awaited. The flight will originate from Chennai and arrive in Bangalore. The Kingfisher flight will connect many outbound flights from Bangalore, he said.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa is expected to arrive in the first flight, the MP stated. Ahead of the commercial operations, the city police have taken over the duty of extending the security and the KSRTC will operate Volvo buses to the airport. In all, 50 trained policemen will be on duty at the airport.

DC Harsh Gupta, police commissioner Sunil Agarwal and Mysore district additional SP M Venkataswamy attended the meeting.

Vishwanath said some air operators are interested in operating flights from Mysore to Goa and Kochi. The DGM said Jet Airways personnel have visited the facility and are keen to start operations.

The MP said the issues related to the airport expansion will be taken up after Dasara festivities conclude in mid-October. "There are glitches and I will discuss this with the DC and other officials. The NH 212 diversion for the expansion will be discussed and the state government will be approached," he stated pointing out that Karnataka has fulfilled its commitment for Phase I. It should not be a problem, he stated.

Mysore Palace virtual tour website getting record hits

Gouri Satya / Mysore September 28, 2010, 0:29 IST

The website that gives one a virtual tour of the Mysore Palace is receiving record hits. Within a short span of its launch, global visitors in record numbers are taking a virtual tour of the majestic palace.

In the last one month as on September 10, the monthly hits had crossed 10,000,000 and heading towards the 15,000,000 hits mark. Launched in August and officially inaugurated on August 13 by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, the number of hits had crossed the 8,000,000 mark in the very first month period since its launch. The peak of the hourly hits is over 40,000. The Palace images have become most popular with 435,751 hits.

Developed by the Mysore Palace Board of the Karnataka government, www.mysorepalace.tv, it offers a detailed view of the 21 different sections of the famous Indo-Saracenic structure, most popular among the tourists both inland and foreign tourists.

The high quality 360° panorama enables zoom in and pan around for a detailed virtual tour of the famous royal house and the garden around it. The true-to-life presentation with narrated mini-movies and text makes it more attractive. A quick view of any area of the artistic interiors can be had with its 360° panorama. Hence, the website has become most popular with hits from across the globe.

Countries from where the website is drawing hits for a virtual tour include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Hungary, Poland and other European countries, South Korea, Philippines and Netherlands, besides India.

“Most of the repeated hits are from India itself and I think tour operators are visiting it since the pictures are 360 panoramic and it keeps giving the presentation-type look. As the pictures are of high-end quality they provide a grand look. There are first-time hits as well as repeat-hits,” says website developer Sanjay Ahuja of Software Guru.

Expressing his surprise and happiness over the hits the website is getting, he told Business Standard that Mysore deserves such a showcasing as it is a tourism city with a large number of tourist spots to offer tourist interested in any field.

Mysore Palace is on the Facebook social networking site also, http://www.facebook.com/mysorepalace, which has also become popular as it includes pictures of Dasara celebrations from 2006 onwards and of the ongoing preparations for the ensuing celebrations like the recent ‘Gaja Payana’ or departure of Dasara elephants to Mysore from the Nagarahole forest.. It has some old pictures as well.

few More thing is
1. Bangalore- Mysore existing four way road has been planned to made 6 ways with 6 places there will be By-pass so that we don't need to enter the small cities/village ( mainly Ramnagar, chennapattana, Mandhya).
2. BMIC is back on track thanks to suprem court and current state government. This will bring entire bangalore close to bangalore.
3. Bangalore- Mysore rail line doubling this will openup lot of advantage. it might bring down mysore-bangalore time to 2 hours.
4. Work in tourism
5. Vikram hospital and JSS are planning big expansion in mysore. they are also planing to health tourism.

Anantpur is in lime light interms of project. But the wheather is very bad. In summar from Feb to June many people die due to sun stroke ( Temp above 45 degree). Second is it is in Rayal seema region known for Musal power. so people will be carefull. Where as mysore is bestowed with Natural A.C and cosmo culture from centuries. Also peaceful place.

-Mysore altitude (elevation 760m) is much less than Bangalore (elevation 920m), so it is not A.C weather after all. Also i doubt about potential of medical tourism in mysore, recently a TOI report said 1/3 of all cardiac surgeries in india are done in bangalore - thus includes foreigners and other city people.
-Flight connectivity is important for IT CEO's, Kingfisher starting it soon. More flights badly needed.
-They are widening existing ring road instead of completing full ring road circle at south-east corner :bash:
-After seeing "rakta charitra" movie IT people run will away from Anantapur  Paritala Ravi hails from same place...

6-lane Mysore outer ring road soon

Sunday, 18 July 2010 15:58

PM News Bureau

A 42-km long six-lane Outer Ring Road in Mysore city, Karnataka, being executed by Mysore Urban Development Authority, is expected to complete in the next seven to eight months.
Besides widening the existing 32.5-km ring road into a six-lane highway, the work also includes laying a 9.5-km missing link of the ring road between Mysore-Nanjangud highway and Mysore-Bannur highway. Muda has reached the final stage for acquiring 150 acres for laying this ring road with the authorities issuing a final notification in this regard. The work has been stalled for more than three years owing to a dispute over alignment of the stretch.
Muda will soon finalise tenders for widening the 32.5-km ring road into a highway at a cost of Rs 219 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

Had this been posted in Karnataka roads and highways, many like me would have taken note of it :)

Now, explore Mysore on a bicycle

Shankar Bennur

MYSORE: With a host of tourist attractions and heritage spots situated within a 20-km radius of Mysore city, the authorities here have decided to launch “cycle tourism” for the first time. Bicycles, including the geared, sports and recreational kinds, will be made available for tourists during Dasara (October 8 to 18) and may be extended for a few more days as tourists continue to pour in during the festival holidays. “We shall go ahead with the plan of introducing cycles for tourists this Dasara on a temporary basis,” said Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar.Sources said a few of India's leading cycle manufacturers have shown interest in supplying the cycles to promote cycle tourism.

A tourist who hires a cycle at one location in Mysore city need not return it at the same location after the tour. He/she can deposit the cycle at the nearest hiring point. The details of cycle rentals will be announced soon, they said.

Representatives from the tourism industry here feel that cycles are sure to be a hit as Mysore is still considered to be a cyclist-friendly place, although vehicular traffic has gone up in the recent years.

Surely, the international tourists will lap up the offer, they feel.

Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Opto Circuits India Ltd. plans to spend 7.5 billion rupees ($167 million) over three years to set up two medical equipment factories in India and Malaysia as the global incidence of diabetes and heart disease rises.

People are becoming more aware of lifestyle diseases, said Vinod Ramnani, managing director at Opto Circuits, India’s largest domestic medical equipment maker. “That is the main driver” for growth, he said.

The company, based in Bangalore, makes stents, small tubes used to treat narrowed arteries, and patient-monitoring systems. More than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes and the number may double by 2030, according to the World Health Organization. About 17 million people die of heart disease every year, WHO said in a statement on its website. India has the highest number of deaths globally from coronary heart disease.

Opto Circuits’s shares, which have gained 31 percent this year, fell 1 percent to 296.80 rupees at close of trading in Mumbai.

The company, which competes with Johnson & Johnson, General Electric Co., Siemens AG and Royal Philips Electronics NV, will begin work shortly on the Malaysian plant, Ramnani said. The Indian facility in the southern city of Mysore is being designed, he said.

Shareholders on Sept. 28 approved raising as much as 20 billion rupees to fund expansion at units in the U.S. and Europe, Ramnani said.
Citigroup Global Markets owns 3 percent of Opto Circuits, according to data on the Bloomberg.

Commercial operations at airport from today

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Commercial operations of flights from the Mysore airport will begin on Friday, with the first one, Kingfisher Flight IT 2404, taking off from the city at 1.15 p.m.

The flight will reach here from Bangalore at 12.45 p.m. and take off with its first batch of passengers, including Chief Minister B.S.Yeddyurappa and Vijay Mallya, MP and Chairman of Kingfisher Airlines.

Inaugurated

The Mysore airport was officially inaugurated by the Chief Minister on May 15. Commercial operations had not commenced even though the airport has handled more than 250 chartered flights in the past year. As of now, Kingfisher Airlines is the only flight in and out of Mysore, but airport officials say other players, including Jet Airways, have inspected the premises and were conducting an air passenger traffic analysis.

The airport was modernised by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at an estimated cost of Rs. 82 crore.

The modernised terminal has come up on the Mysore-Nanjangud Road at Mandakalli and is spread over an area of 3,250 sq. m and can handle 150 to 200 passengers at a time.

The runway is 1,740 m long and is suitable for ATR-72 type of aircraft that are short-haul flights with a passenger capacity of 60 to 70.

The airport was completed on September 15, 2009 and was ready for inauguration during Dasara 2009, but airline operators stayed away seeking concessions from the State Government, including reduction in aviation turbine fuel tax, which, in Karnataka, is reckoned to be highest in the country.

The second innings

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: For Vijay Mallya, MP and Chairman and Managing Director of Kingfisher Airlines, Friday's inaugural flight to commence the commercial operations to Mysore airport, marked the renewal of his links with the city.

As he disclosed, not many are aware that when the airline industry was privatised in the 1990s, the UB group was the first to start an airline and it launched Dornier services from Bangalore. “The inaugural flight took off from Bangalore and landed at the Mysore airstrip and hence today's service marks my second innings with Mysore,” Mr. Mallya disclosed while speaking at the function to mark the occasion.

He said: “I have been coming to Mysore ever since I was a child, visiting the Race Club, driving up the Chamundi Hills, etc. It is amazing how the city has grown into an alternative to Bangalore in IT. It is a gateway to south for tourists visiting Kodagu, Udhagamandalam, etc., and the new services will boost the tourism sector,” he added.

Rly station adds new passenger facilities

Mysore, Oct 2, DHNS:

Waiting at the City Railway Station just got better! Wonder how? Well, the upgraded waiting lounge for both men and women were launched in the city on Saturday. Fitted with comfortable chairs, cell phone chargers, a newspaper stand and a LCD TV, passengers can now kill boredom at the station without any hassle.

Another passenger-friendly feature is the newly installed giant LED screen installed at the entrance. The LED screen set-up at a cost of Rs 30 lakh will flash details regarding arrival, departure, besides trains stationed in the complex.

Speaking to media after dedicating the facilities, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) B B Verma said that the facilities will be helpful for long distance passengers. Furthermore, he said that the LED screens will also be installed at Hassan, Shimoga and Davangere in the coming days. He said revenue would be generated by displaying advertisements on the LED screens. The waiting lounge is upgraded under PPP model with Ultratech, a company.

Dasara special

To cater to Dasara rush, a special train will be introduced during the Dasara festival said senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Mysore Division of South Western Railway, Dr Anoop Dayanand Sadhu. The train will depart from Bangalore at 10.15 am and reach Mysore at around 1 pm. After arriving at Mysore, it will immediately leave for Bangalore, he said.

After ‘Jamboo Savari’, the last leg of Dasara, a special night train will be operated from Mysore to Bangalore at 9 pm.

He said that a proposal has been sent to the railway headquarters to run a night train towards Nanjangud on that day.

This apart, additional reservation counters will be opened at the station as the numberof passengers is expected to double against about 25,000 recorded during the normal days.

Sadhu said that the additional counters will also be opened at Nanjangud and Chamarajanagar.

Additional coaches

Two additional coaches will be added to the trains on the Mysore - Bangalore route to accommodate the adequate number of passengers. In order to counter the rush on the final day, railway TTs will be handed over tickets in advance so that people can buy it from them instead of buying the tickets from the reservation counters.

Escalator

Verma said that tenders have been invited for constructing an escalator on Platform One and the works are expected to start soon after awarding the job. He said that the subway planning process has been completed. Multi-functional complex that is coming up at the main gate, is expected to be complete soon,he added.

Security measures

The security at the Station will be beefed up with an additional 20-25 security personnel from the Railway Protection Force manning the exit points.

Senior Divisional Manager B B Verma said that all the exit points will be manned by a constable and TT. Commenting on railway overbridge on K R S Road, Verma said that the road will be temporarily opened up during Dasara and will be closed soon after the same. The bridge works is expected to take further three to four months to complete.

Mysore rly station on web

Sreekantswamy B, Mysore, Oct 2, DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/101519/mysore-rly-station-web.html)

Henceforth you can peek into good old Mysore railway station on website.

An exclusive website; www.mysorerailwaystation will be shortly launched by south western railways (SWR) Mysore division.

Senior divisional commercial manager, SWR, Mysore, Dr Anup Dayanand Sadhu told Deccan Herald, the launch of the facility will make railway station first to boast of such a facility across the nation. This follows the surge in number of tourists both in domestic and foreign visiting the city. Most importantly, it was the right time to help travellers gain an access to the station and facilities available at the click of the mouse, when ‘New York Times’ in its recent report has listed Mysore as the fourth sought after destination in the tourists itinerary.

The website has array of informations right from the map of the station-entry and exit points, medical shop, platforms, parking lot, lounges, retiring rooms, cloak room, parcel services with regard to basic amenities. Regarding other services one can have a glimpse of train schedule, buggies, wifi, mode of reservation, passenger reservation services (PRS), besides answers for ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ (FAQ)- how to cancel a particular ticket?, changing the name and similar enquiries.

Inspiration

Sadhu said this is in addition to the general website of SWR . What inspired him to plan a separate website was his first hand experience. He had to travel from Chicago Union To Washington DC a year ago. He was new to that particular place and before boarding a train to Washington DC he had to invariably surf a website. This hi-tech facility will aid tourists in booking tickets in advance only after getting to know the facilities available, Sadhu added.

Plans are also on the cards to establish a link with the website of Indian Railway Catering Transport Corporation (IRCTC) and also Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) for the benefit of the passengers again.

A tourists facilitation centre is also being opened at the station to help tourists.

@Catchshash you are correct.

Mysore railway station to have a website soon
Special Correspondent

It will be the first in the country to have one
MYSORE: In view of the city's growing popularity as a tourist centre, the Mysore railway station will soon have a website, which will be launched during Dasara for the benefit of tourists.

Though there are websites for different railway zones and divisions, Mysore railway station will be the first in the country to have a dedicated website.

Anup Dayanand Sadhu, senior divisional commercial manager, told The Hindu that it would provide complete details, including a geographical map of the station, apart from the facilities available in the station such as a waiting room, lounges, dormitory, location in the city, various telephone numbers, parking lots and reservation counters. As new facilities will be added to the station, the website will be updated so that in-coming tourists know what to expect.

In addition to this, the city railway station website will also have all relevant information necessary for the tourists visiting the city. This includes important links to information about places of tourist interest in-and-around Mysore — restaurants, hotels, shopping centres, markets, commercial venues, entertainment centres etc.

Though such a website is the norm for major airports, it is a novel initiative for a railway station. This is in addition to the general website of the Mysore Division which only provides details about the train services, reservation status etc.

Meanwhile, there are plans afoot to have a dedicated photo gallery, highlighting the heritage of the railways. Mr. Sadhu said a photo exhibition showcasing the role of the railways in nation-building and its importance during the freedom struggle would be projected in the photo exhibition, which is to be launched in due course. Though the photo exhibition will be a temporary one, there are plans to have a dedicated section exclusively for Mysore Division on a permanent basis at the city railway station. This would provide a glimpse of how the Mysore station looked almost 75 years or 100 years ago.

Mysore airport resurrected

BS Reporter (http://sify.com/finance/mysore-airport-resurrected-news-news-kkebOccijga.html)| 2010-10-04

The refurbished Mysore Airport finally sees commercial flight operations.

A Kingfisher Airlines ATR-72 landed at the revamped airport, with the Chamundi Hills providing a beautiful backdrop, on September 30. It carried the first batch of passengers Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and airlines chairman and MP Vijay Mallya among them. The plane was given a ceremonial aviation welcome — a "water salute" — by fire tenders. The first flight took off for Bangalore from the aiport the same day.

The modernisation of the Mandakalli airport was completed on September 15, 2009, and Mysoreans eagerly awaited its commercial operation during 2009 Dasara. But it had to wait till this Dasara. The airport, lying on the Mysore-Ooty highway, has now become accessible for passengers between Mysore and Bangalore, and onwards. The airport was formally inaugurated last June by the chief minister.

Private operators were staying away insisting on certain concessions from the state government to make their operations economically viable. In the intergum, the airport, modernised by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) at Rs 60 crore, was being used for private landings, mostly politicians. The private operators’ demands included reduction in aviation turbine fuel tax, which, in Karnataka, is the highest in the country.

Kingfisher’s IT 2404 will depart from Bangalore at noon and arrive at Mysore at 12.45 pm. From Mysore, flight IT 2407 will depart at 2.20 pm and arrive at 3.10 pm in Bangalore. The direct flight will offer travellers from Mysore a one-stop connection to and from state capitals and other cities including New Delhi.

AAI had taken up the development of Mysore Airport for ATR-72 type aircraft operations in Phase I. Accordingly, it has completed construction of the runway 09/27 of dimension 1,740m x 30m, apron and link taxiway with associated facilities in March 2008 suited for short haul ATR-72 aircraft operational with a passenger capacity of 60-70. The terminal is spread over 3,250 sq m and can handle 150 to 200 passengers at a time. Construction of terminal building, technical block-cum- control tower, fire station, and other facilities were completed in March 2010.

However, the Rs 140 crore second phase of the project which includes upgrade of the airport with its apron, setting up of air traffic control, meteorological department and upgrading the terminus is yet to be taken up. When this project is completed, the airport will be able to operate Airbus 320 and Boeing 737.

Built during the rule of the Mysore maharajas, the Mandakalli airstrip was handling chartered Dakotas bringing top dignitaries like Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhai Patel and Rajendra Prasad and foreign tourists from Bangalore’s HAL Airport. A leading English daily of Chennai used to send send its newspaper bundles in a special flight for a few months. Vayudut feeder services introduced in mid-80s were suspended later because of poor patronage. It remained defunct subsequently.

Archidply settles labour dispute at Mysore unit

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) Plywood manufacturer Archidply Industries Ltd today said the dispute between the management and the labour at its Mysore unit has been amicably settled.
In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the company said it, however, has decided not to resume manufacturing operations at the factory.
"The company proposes to develop the property as real estate of suitable nature as may be decided by the board of directors, wherein the realisation is much better than continuing the business activity," the filing said.
Last year the decision was taken for shifting the manufacturing facilities from the Mysore factory to Chintamani (Karnataka) as after the development of the city limits of Mysore, the factory was functioning in the residential area.
"No manufacturing was done by anyone, except this unit," the company said in a statement.
The Chintamani unit has now been fully installed and commissioned for production," it added.
According to the company''s website, Archidply runs another manufacturing unit at Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. The company registered sales of Rs 151 crore in 2009-10.

True...But my only apprehension is that during the tree's growth it may obstruct the median lamp post for some time, but once it gets very big and rises above the lamp post then it poses absolutely no problem at all.

Below is the KRS road in Mysore which has small trees along with some decorative trees, they must think of such plants

Ring road is an important road for Mysore from the growth point of view,it ought to maintain road aesthetics which will help in making the whole 42 km a Commercial hub may be years later.

Residential plots will pave way for commercial establishments all along the ring road??

We must not forget that we built a beautiful bangalore--thanks to the kings and our leaders.same way we must not miss on such small things like aesthetics which will only add a great deal to the city's credentials.

Mysore is beautiful,we must preserve it and enhance it with time.Bangalore once was like Mysore we nurtured it well--so we have a beautiful Bangalore now.Same way we must nurture our small Mysore :) to make it a lovable and a livable city

I want to see that missing (souteast) ring road link work started. Once actual work started contractor will finish it soon so that he can bill it. Any on site updates sooner the welcome!

The Ring Road of Bangalore took many years to get materialized since its conceptualization :ohno: Good to see Mysore being farsighted and executing the works faster

Trees in the median not only adds to the aesthetics, environment and scenic value it also acts as a natural crash guard. I have heard of few incidents on the B'lore-Mysore highway where the vehicles came 'flying' across the median from the other end. Trees would avoid this, though not the accident.

nurture our small Mysore :) to make it a lovable and a livable city

livable city ... whats wrong with it now

Yes it is livable as of now,I said that keeping the highest livable standards in mind------

Mysore is seeing some great primary development projects like

24*7 Drinking water supply-JUSCO
Intelligent Transport system-500 buses and 65+ bus stops
5 ultra modern IMTCs(on the lines of BLR TTMCs)-Park and ride facilities
42 KM Six lane ring road
Core heritage areas-Wider Roads
Tourist infrastructure
Superspeciality hospitals

and many more............

It is also seeing secondary development projects like-Malls,multiplexes,Hotels etc etc

Mysore will see tremendous growth from now on-with many industries setting up shops it will only demand for more housing---More people=More primary infrastructure, for which Mysore I think is gearing up well.

Now that Mysore is connected to India by air via bengaluru more commerce will flow into the city.

Mysore is sending jittery feelers to its closest competitor Mangalore --

Bangalore ring road was built using state govt money... But Mysore is getting JNNURM central govt money for this. Also ring road concept was not a proven one that time when blore ring was made.

If mysore got junnurm, mangalore got "port connectivity" sponsored by central govt.. all roads there are four laned and flyovers...

KSTDC launches special Dasara tour package

Shankar Bennur

It receives many reservations even as bookings opened on Tuesday

Tourists will be flown in on Kingfisher flights

It is being offered in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad

KSTDC and Kingfisher Airlines are offering Dasara Vihaara for tourists visiting Mysore this Dasara from Bangalore,

MYSORE: Dasara Vihaara, a special tour package of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) for tourists from Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad who want to fly to Mysore for the Dasara festivities this year and visit tourist spots in and around the City of Palaces, begins on October 10.

The two-day one-night package includes two-way airfare, airport transfers, sightseeing of Mysore, Chamundi Hills, Srirangapatna, Brindavan Gardens and Somanathapur in an air-conditioned bus, overnight accommodation at the luxurious Lalit Mahal Hotel, meals, and entry permits at tourist places.

KSTDC and Kingfisher Airlines will jointly operate the all-inclusive tour package, which, according to KSTDC, is attractive and value-for-money.

Tourists will be flown to Mysore from Chennai and Hyderabad in addition to Bangalore. Last year, tourists were flown in by chartered flights (Kingfisher) from Bangalore as commercial flights were yet to be operated to Mysore.

Kingfisher Airlines launched commercial flights between Bangalore and Mysore on October 1 and therefore, tourists buying this package will be booked in these flights.

The package costs Rs. 6,000 a passenger and Rs. 11,500 for two passengers from Bangalore; Rs. 8,000 a passenger and Rs. 15,000 for two passengers from Chennai, and Rs. 9,000 a passenger and Rs. 17,000 for two passengers from Hyderabad.

“Within a few hours after bookings opened on Tuesday, KSDTC received many reservations. Bookings may get over soon going by the response. Seats are limited as tourists will be brought in by commercial flights instead of chartered flights,” sources in the KSTDC told The Hindu.

Perhaps, the attractive price tag and the stay offer at the Lalit Mahal Palace Hotel could have encouraged tourists to opt for the package. This is the second year that KSTDC is offering the special package to promote Dasara.

Last year, KSTDC's special package to fly tourists in on a 65-seat Kingfisher chartered plane from Bangalore to Mysore was a big hit. Five chartered flights were operated to the city from Bangalore during the Dasara last year. Nearly 400 tourists had bought the tour package then.

The package is available from October 10 to October 15 and October 18 to October 21. As Kingfisher does not operate fights to Mysore on Saturday, the package, therefore, is not available on Saturday.

KSTDC had operated chartered flights from Bangalore to Hampi and also from Chennai and Hyderabad for the Hampi Utsav. The response was excellent and KSTDC plans to fly tourists in for this year's utsav too, the sources added.

Campaign

Meanwhile, KSTDC has been carrying out an extensive campaign overseas and in India for Dasara for the past six months.

“The corporation has worked for almost six months to promote Karnataka tourism across India and abroad. Mysore Dasara has been included in the promotional campaign. We are hopeful of a good tourist turnout for this Dasara,” said Ratnakar, officer in-charge of public relations, KSTDC, Bangalore.

He said that Dasara was promoted at tour and travel fairs at Frankfurt and London recently and stalls had been put up at tourism exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo and Macau. “We are confident of the event drawing many international tourists and the number may go up this time because of our campaign,” he said.

He said road shows were conducted in Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Pune and Jaipur in the recent months to bring tourists to Karnataka.

Autoliv said Thursday that it has begun the construction of a seatbelt weaving plant in Mysore near Bangalore, in response to the rapid growth in Asian vehicle production.

MAIN FACTS:

-The cost for the initial phase amounts to approximately $10M, which includes the cost for the 24,000 square meters (sqm) site.

-Currently, most seatbelt webbing is imported from Autoliv's plant in China. However, demand in Asia has grown so sharply during the last few years that more webbing capacity is urgently needed in the region.

-The Mysore webbing plant will have capacity to produce 100M meters of webbing when the floor space of 10,000 sqm will be fully utilized.

-In the initial phase, the plant will have 65 employees and 180 employees when all investments in highly automated weaving looms have been completed.

-According to industry estimates Indian light vehicle production doubled during the past five years (to 2.4M last year from 1.2M in 2004) and is expected to double again during the current five-year period to 5M by 2014.

True,Mangalore as a city is the highest revenue generator after Bangalore (urban/rural=suburbs).

But when it comes to District --Belgaum is second to Bangalore urban,I remember Gentem putting up that list somewhere. For me District revenue is more important as a parameter than the city revenue.
Industries are spread out in the District and not necessarily confined to city.

Friends,

Let us not fight in this forum. I love Mysore as better liveable city compared Mangalore. However, the analysis about future says something different.

In fact Revenue generation is not just decided by the population but also by the very fact of the presence of financial institutions in the city. Mumbai is Financial capital because of umpteen number of Banks and Financial institutions present here along with harbours that export all sorts of materials to various nations. Further international airport here is said to be biggest in India in terms of passenger and Freight handling. Although Bengaluru is leading in IT, it can’t replace Mumbai as Financial capital at any point of time.

It is the same way Mangalore is progressing. “Where you are is not important, but where you go is always significant”. International Airport in Mangalore has registered impressive growth in passenger and Freight handling. The New Mangalore Port has now come one notch up by securing rank of 8th largest Harbour in the country. And the city has vision 2020 & beyond. The Banking Sector (One of the leading Sectors) has also registered fabulous growth in the city. It is expected to be “Oil capital of Asia” in the years to come, with one of the 2 large SEZs having oil and natural gas as Core sector coming up around the city. City infrastructure has also seen phenomenon growth compare to its counterparts in the state. It is obviously the city of future as described by many international ranking agencies.

As far as Mysore is concerned, it is undoubtedly leader in Tourism sector. The government is ensuring that the tag of Heritage city is unaltered. However, proximity to Bangalore is having its own advantages and disadvantages. IT sector is looking at Mysore as 2nd alternative to Bangalore which is really punching line. However, the exports (all sectors) out of the city are limited and hence there could be a cap on revenue generation in the years to come. Undoubtedly it is considered as one of the major cities in India, I am not sure whether it can catch up with Mangalore as far as growth in Aviation and Financial sectors are considered (Obviously there is no harbour).

The biggest advantage that Mangalore has is the Urban Agglomeration. It is surrounded by many small towns which could potentially grow into the folds of the main city. Right from Ullal to Udupi (span of 70 Km), you will find self developed towns with lots of commercial activities.
However, if you go out of Mysore city, you will find vast agricultural lands which are difficult to be converted into commercial properties due to rigid laws enforced in the recent past, post Singur or Nandigram.

One may notice that although being one of the best cities in Karnataka, Hubli is losing it’s race due to predominantly Agricultural activities in the surroundings. Except for Bengaluru’s proximity Mysore will also find itself in the same boat during the long run.

Well said Anand and Akash ,thanks for the photos. The good thing about Karnataka is that every city has its unique features . What we need is to take advantage of these features to improve infrastructure, living conditions and offer a better future for its citizens and state. I was suprised at the way Bellary is growing. I would never have imagined in my dreams that this sleepy town would one day grow to this extent.

Hey Mr.Hash, sorry I couldn find any tangible proof to support my view, I went by what was posted on earlier threads. So do u mean mysore contributes more than mangalore?? or rather any other city ? If so can u prove that?? :) I have lived in both the cities for more than a couple of years and the cities differ in so many aspects. Mysore is a sleepy heritage city full of historical monuments, where as mlore is a hip city filled wit high rise plush apartments, malls pubs etc. Please do visit mlore and then u will realize why we say it contributes second to the states revenue. or simple go through the posts on the mangalore thread. Jus see the developments in mlore :), it jus mite give u an idea as to WHY :)

chuck it dude..both our arguments are baseless..i think u haven't noticed one thing..mysore thread doesn't have posts about commercial establishments..thats why u r thinking mysore is way behind mlore..but the fact is that mlore is on par with mysore..u r talking about high rises..in mysore, very few builders get permits to go 5+, that too if they r constructing it far away from the center of the city..mlore has space constraints due to presence of western ghats in its vicinity which are ecologically important..thats why govt. has given nod for high rises..

Now that we will have Siddu as CM who hails from Mysore,we can expect some good funds,Mysore is also a JNNURM city, hope Center releases more funds to Mysore.I also pray that Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad get more central grants---because those two cities are a BJP strong hold. Mysore gets its own Madame Tussauds museum

First Published : 11 Oct 2010 08:10:38 AM IST
Last Updated :

MYSORE: District in-charge Minister S A Ramadas inaugurated Melody World, an art gallery and museum of life-size wax statues and musical instruments, at Siddhartha Layout, here on Sunday.

The gallery, with wax figures of musical instruments, is said to be only the third of its kind in the world.

Over 100 wax statues and over 300 musical instruments from around the world are exhibited in the museum. This is in addition to wax statues of musicians.

Figurines of music genres - Indian classical north and south, Punjabi Bhangra, Jazz, Rock, Middle East among others are displayed at Melody World. The attire of the statues are tailor-made to match fabric and style. Colours are added to the wax when in molten state and cosmetic colouring is applied in its final stages. While eyes and teeth of the statues are artificial, the hair used may be natural or synthetic.

The three wax museums in India employ advanced computer technology in museum management and are managed by Shreeji and his wife Reena.

Hii Mangie_Boy. I agree with you that mangalore is grown a lot over the years. I have been to mangalore 4-5 times and have seen it with my own eyes. So is mysore. I just dont understand the word "sleepy city".Gimme a break. What does that ever mean.?? Having highrise apartments, pubs doesnt in anyway show that mlore contributes more. Mysore has not been allowed to grow vertical. Otherwise it would have had its fair share of highrises. Mysore generates lots of revenue for govt. due to tourism which is not the case with mlore. Mlore has its advantages with being a port. The statement that mlore contributes more to state after blore is being floated around for too long. I am yet to see any link or evidence supporting that. It may or may not be true. So stop floating these myths.

Q: When you say other cities are they primarily Hyderabad and Chennai?

A: It’s Cochin, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mangalore, Mysore - these are the cities that we are in just now.

More (http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/ipo-issues-open/prestige-estates-to-cut-debt-equity-ratio-to-055x-post-ipo_490597.html)

A large part of Prestige’s saleable area is in the residential space besides exposure in retail, commercial buildings and hospitality. Prestige has an existing joint venture with an associate firm of CapitaMalls (a large developer and operator of malls in Asia) to develop retail projects in south India in cities such as Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin. It also entered into a JV with CapitaMalls to manage the retail malls developed by the joint venture.

I agree with Akash for more than 100%. Comparing does not make any sense. As civilians, the awareness about the surroundings and will to contribute to the growth is more important than anything sense.

Both cities are unique and leaders in their own sense. Hence comparing and fighting for supremacy in the forum is really unnecessary.

I love both the cities as they are jewels in the coronet of Karnataka State.

Railway station to host permanent heritage photo gallery

Mysore, Oct 11, DH News Service:

If you get tired of sitting in the plush waiting lounge at the city Railway Station watching TV or reading newspapers, then the Heritage Photo Gallery on platform number one will surely help you pass time until you board your train.

With 110 photographs displaying the bygone era of steam engines on display, the gallery provides the elder generation nostalgic moments and the younger generation the fleeting moments in history.

President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’s visit to Mysore in 1962, Gandhiji Special train used to carry his ashes, steam engines and diesel engines is a perfect for rail enthusiasts. Several photographs of railway stations including the Meerat, Lahore, Howrah and Mumbai can be seen at the exhibition.

David Lean’s ‘A passage to India’ being shot at Doddaballapur Railway Station, a bullock cart pulling a small carriage on the railway tracks is also visible.

South Western Railway, Divisional Railway Manager, B B Verma said that the museum is a gift to the residents of Mysore on the occasion of Dasara. He said that exhibition was done up in two weeks by collecting photographs from mediapersons, local people and the Association of Mysore Railway Station. He said that SWR has plans to permanently display the photographs.

Inaugurating the exhibition, CFTRI, Director, V Prakash said that the exhibition brings about nostalgic moments. Reminiscing a ride in the steam engine, he bemoaned that the next generation would never know the thrill of riding in a train pulled by the steam engine.

Presenting four photographs of former president Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’s visit to Mysore, Photo journalist Amardas said that earlier there was only train from Mysore to Bangalore, which started at 7 am in the morning and reach Bangalore at 1 pm.

Reminiscing about the journey during those times, he said that people used rush to buy Maddur Vada’s when the train stopped at Maddur railway station.

A passenger, Chandrashekar who has been travelling in trains for the past 45 years said that when the steam engines were around the engine drivers used to stop the trains if people wanted to board the train.

Senior Commercial Manager Anoop Dayanand Sadhu and Additional Railway Manager, Majumdar were present.

Mysore to get IT/ITES SEZ soon

Imran Khan

BANGALORE: Mysore will soon get a Rs 2000 crore special economic zone (SEZ) to boost its information technology (IT ) and IT enabled sector (ITES). The special economic zone project will generate employment for around 200 local youth in the IT/ITES sectors and extend infrastructure facilities in the district, said the 23rd State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC) which cleared the project in July this year.

The IT/ITES special economic zone project is the brainchild of Delhi based DSC Limited, which is part of the DSC group. The group claims itself to be one of the pioneers of the BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) space.

The SEZ project, which was approved by the SHLCC, is coming up on 30 acres of land in Mysore district. The land for the project will be acquired by Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), for which the identification of land will be done by DSC Limited.

The company has been asked by the Commerce and Industries (C I) department to prepare a plan for development of human resources required for the project, train local people and provide employment to the trained youth.

For procuring the required inputs and components for the project, the company has been directed to develop the local vendors. The company has been asked to submit a vendor development plan to the Director of Industries Commerce for monitoring.

They have been also asked to take up social infrastructure development projects in the vicinity of the proposed location of the unit. The company has also been directed to provide employment to at least one member of the family of each land loser.

Mysore City Corporation will be launching four Patiala-made chariots today

Convertible chariots add to city’s glory

http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2010/10/15/chariot_1.jpg
Sreekantswamy B, Mysore, Oct 14, DH News Service:

Henceforth tourists can go around the city of palaces in majestically driven chariots. The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will be introducing four chariots in the city on Friday (Oct 15) joining the league of heritage cities to boast of such facility.

Merry go round: Mayor Sandesh Swamy and others on a trial ride in the chariot in Mysore on Thursday. DH photo by Anurag BasavarajMayor Sandesh Swamy, Corporators P Devaraj, Ayub Khan, Shankar, K V Mallesh and M J Ravikumar and superintending engineer, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) S E Suresh Babu went on a trial ride in a chariot on Thursday.
The civic body decided to introduce chariots under its heritage project to revive the history. It has been already decided to add 21 chariots and of them four have already arrived.

Suresh Babu told Deccan Herald, a chariot maker from Patiala emerged a successful bidder in e-procurement and has already supplied four chariots.

These chariots are more spacious than the existing tongas, and have a capacity to accommodate four persons in the central portion where the seats are fixed, while another can share space with tongawallah in the front seat. Tongas are convertible too, with a provision to remove the top portion.

Tongawallahs belonging to Mysore Maharaja Shahpasand Tonga Sangha of Agrahara pulled out the chariot from the cellar of the city corporation to facilitate the trial. A horse belonging to ‘kathewadi’ breed mostly used by tongawallahs in the city, was used for the trial too. Sources said, horses belonging to the same breed available in three colours will be purchased after Dasara from Bijapur district. The horses are available in the range of Rs one lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. In all 21 chariots will be introduced keeping in view the heritage tag of the city.

The main aim behind this initiative is to give tourists a feeling of the past, as chariots were largely in use during Maharaja’s time. Most importantly, chariots assumed different shape from the time of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar with closed body fitted with doors to the currently seen open tongas. To facilitate the tongawallahs eke out a living from the same, MCC is giving 50 per cent subsidy of the total amount. According to the authorities, the cost of a chariot including horse may be calculated up to Rs two to 2.5 lakh. Another reason attributed to vary in the cost is change in designs. Three designs have been finalised and chariots will be fitted on the same models.

MCC will be giving subsidy, while Vijaya Bank has come forward to extend loan for the remaining amount. Tongawallahs will have to repay the loan in installments.

At jamboo savari?

If all goes well, jamboo savari may see a new attraction in the form of chariots. The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) authorities are mulling over taking four chariots that have been already readied, in the procession on October 17.

DID RAJA PATHAS EXIST?
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/4989/imageasp.jpg

MCC to recreate Raja Margas sans evidence

Mysore, Oct 15 (RK&JP)- City historians like Prof. P.V. Nanjaraje Urs say that the designated Raja Pathas was just one of the several so-called Raja Pathas or Raja Margas that existed in city. These roads were called thus because the Raja (king) travelled on them occasionally. These roads had no special appendages that set them aside as Raja Pathas or Margas. They were ordinary small town roads.

But now the 3-km-long stretch of road from the Palace north gate to Bannimantap has been 'anointed' as Raja Patha — Royal Road — to commemorate the erstwhile rulers of Mysore who used to celebrate the culmination of Dasara by going on the Jumboo Savari seated on the Royal elephant , from the Palace to the Torchlight Parade Ground in Bannimantap.

It is learnt that `16.5 crore has been earmarked for the Raja patha project out of the Chief Minister's `100 crore special grant and work has already commenced. The MCC has taken up asphalting work of the road at a cost of ` 9 lakh and laying of colourful checkered tiles on the walkways on either side of the road at a cost of ` 15 lakh.

Tender process for the project, taken up by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC), has been completed and the work will be taken up on full scale after Dasara festivities are over.

But contrary to the hype generated by the MCC about the recreation of a Raja Marga of an earlier age, the roads from the time of the earlier Maharajahs were ordinary and they stayed that way. It was only the grandeur of the Dasara procession that added colour to the roads and gave them a fairytale appearance when the richly caparisoned animals and liveried men on horseback and on foot went by, making it a Raja Marga.

The claim made by the MCC that such Raja Margas existed in other erstwhile princely cities like Jaipur, Udaipur or Baroda does not hold water as there is no heritage road in any of the three cities. The so-called heritage Raja Marga seems to be a mythological creation of MCC based on a non-existent vision.

The Raja Patha in most of the princely States were called as such because the Maharajas frequently passed along the route. For instance, when the news that the Maharaja would be traveling on the road was passed from person to person, people would rush to line on either side of the street to see the royal personage.

One particular instance was on a day in 1963 when Sayyaji Rao Road was abuzz with the news that Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar would be passing by and this was around 5 pm or so. Within minutes, the road was lined on either side with people eager to catch a glimpse of Wadiyar. He passed by in his car that had screened windows and no one was sure just who was in the car, let alone whether the Maharaja was seated in it or not.

The other two roads on which the Maharajas traveled and which the MCC is planning to designate as Raja patha are the Ashoka Road and the Jagan-mohan Palace road.

Ashoka Road

Decades ago, the Jumboo Savari procession, starting from the north gate (near Kote Anjaneya Swamy temple), used to traverse through the Ashoka Road and reach Bannimantap, where the Maharaja would offer puja to the Banni tree and return to the Palace by the same route.

As the years went by and the number of people participating in the procession increased, the Jumboo Savari route was shifted from the narrow Ashoka Road to the wider Sayyaji Rao Road.

Jaganmohan Palace Road

According to historical evidences available, the Maharaja used to take out processions thrice a year from the Brahmapuri West Gate of the Palace to the Jaganmohan Palace.

Till India attained freedom in 1947, the Maharaja used to conduct all his official meetings including legal matters and meetings of the representatives and heads of various provinces under the kingdom, at the Jaganmohan Palace.

Even the Mysore University's Convocations used to be held at the Jaganmohan Palace, until the Crawford Hall was built. The Maharaja used to preside over the Convocations.

There is archival material that says that the Maharaja used to arrive at the Palace in a horse carriage that was a modified Victoria and the old Mysore Imperial Infantry (31st Regiment) would present arms while the Maharaja passed.

Post-Independence, after the princely State was acceded to the Government of India, such meetings ceased to be held at the Jaganmohan Palace and the Jaganmohan Palace road became neglected.

Nostalgia on wheels:Minister in-charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas and MCC Commissioner K.S. Raykar taking a ride on one of the tongas in Mysore on Friday.

MYSORE: The spoke-wheeled horse-drawn chariots or Sarots will bring back memories of yesteryears and take tourists on an emotional and nostalgic journey thanks to Mysore City Corporation (MCC) coming forward to support interested tongawallahs to own such chariots.

Nearly 20 tongawallahs have shown interest in buying the chariots which cost between Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh (including the cost of the horse). The chariots will be distributed in five phases.

Chariots under the first phase were handed over to four tongawallahs — Karim Pasha, Muniraju, Shankara Rao and Babu — on the palace premises here on Friday.

VDI Exports of Patiala has bagged the contract for supplying the chariots.

Funding

“The MCC funds 50 percent of the total cost on each chariot and arrangements had been made to provide loan for the remaining amount to the beneficiaries from Vijaya Bank,” said a corporation official.

The authorities here are also making efforts to get suitable horses for the chariots from Bangalore, Bijapur, Pandarapura, Patiala and Lucknow.

Minister in-charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas, Mayor Sandesh Swamy and MCC Commissioner K.S. Raykar were present at the function in which the tongawallahs received the chariots. Official sources said the chariots are likely to participate in the Jamboo Savari.

There was a Chennai-Mangalore-Chennai service a few years ago. Now it has stopped probably due to low load factor.
I guess Chennai -Mysore -Mangalore sector will have enough passenger traffic for economical operation.

Yes I acknowledge that private sector's contribution to dakshina kannada district's growth has been unarguably fantastic, given the fact that GOK meted out step motherly treatment to it since the state was formed.

But now things have changed, time has come to chip in the best services among the available lot--It is a fact that KSRTC has changed for the good and has posed a serious challenger to the private players.

It is time for Mangaloreans to taste the best---Just wait for the city services to start(have to accept that private lobby is too strong to deal with--but I am confident that KSRTC will start its operations soon) and I am also optimistic on the new terminal building.:)

I agree with Ajay. In fact I am really imressed by the growth of Mysore Airport. Only disappointment is that it should have been built for bigger aircrafts sighting the growth of the city and future projects.

Ditrct flight from Mysore to Managlore is truly a fantastiv idea. If it is realised, people from Royal City will be connected faster to the people of Costal City.

TNN, Oct 18, 2010, 10.05pm IST

MYSORE: Two years after it was declared the institution of excellence with the Centre's awarding Rs 100 crore special grants, the University of Mysore on Monday announced setting up an advanced centre for study of biodiversity.

The centre, which will function out of the department of biotechnology before it gets its own infrastructure, will be opened on Tuesday by higher education minister V S Acharya.

The varsity that is in line to be recognized as a model university by the state government got the distinction from the Centre during 2008-09 and the first installment of Rs 33.33 crore came in August 2009. The Mysore varsity has put in place the centre for biodiversity, bioprospecting and sustainable development, which is a multi-disciplinary centre with social sciences and law faculties teaming with the science departments. The mandate of the centre is to map and document biodiversity, human population, traditional knowledge and abiotic resources in the Western Ghats.

"We have set up instrumentation facility at the centre wherein the latest facilities are made available. Forty project assistants and three post-doctoral fellows are appointed to carry out researches," V-C V G Talawar explained.

The laboratory has the latest equipment worth Rs 12 crore like advanced confocal microscope, fluorescent microscope, polarizing microscope, motorized stereo-zoom microscope, genetic sequencer and flow cytometer. The facilities are open for the faculty and the students, he stated.

Faculty members of anthropology, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, microbiology, environmental science, basic sciences like zoology, chemistry, physics and social sciences like economics, sociology, political science and other institutions like the institute of developmental studies will partner with the centre's work.

The centre is focusing on creation of a comprehensive database on biodiversity and documenting folk medicines practices, microbial diversity, geomorphology, soil and vegetation mapping and to evolve conservation strategies for the endangered medicinal plants. This is to explore their prospects in drug manufacturing.

MCC seeks permission to cut 201 trees; objections called (http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=local&newsid=203167)

Mysore, October 18, DHNS: Threat looms large over 201 trees in the city as forest department has called for objections from general public, following request by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to cut them for taking up widening of roads in the city.

The MCC has proposed to take up widening of several roads in the city for which the roadside trees are coming in the way.

So, it has submitted application to the deputy conservator of forests, Mysore Division, seeking permission to cut the trees. The forest department, in turn has called for objections, if any, from the citizens for cutting the trees, before giving permission. The people are free to file objections within 20 days from today.

Approval

In case of no objections, it would be treated as approval for the proposal and the MCC would be allowed to axe the trees.

The MCC wants to cut four trees in front of Mysore zoo, one near Hotel Refreshment near Zoo, 27 trees on the right side of Hardinge circle up to Vasanth Mahal road, one tree near Karanji lake bridge, two trees on left side of Rana Prathap Singh Circle, five trees near Dairy Circle, one tree near Sangolli Rayanna circle, 28 trees on left to Haramarga near Siddharthanagar and 24 trees on the right side the road. The maximum number of trees are 99 from Vani Vilas Road to Somasundaram Circle and nine trees on Narayana Shastri road.

It may be mentioned here that a large number of trees were axed by the MCC for widening of roads and footpaths in the city.

Manipal cricket ground is awesome.Mysore Infosys cricket ground is the best in the country I can bet on it,but it is a private one :( so cannot expect it to host International ODIs.

Whereas Gangothri glades is owned by Mysore univ --- KSCA has stake in it -- They can develop Gangothri glades into a full fledged stadium.

Yes, the NMPT ground in Mangalore is the best in city, has stands on all sides and has a good pitch.
Surprised to find Cental maidan in the list. Probabaly the most active ground in Mangalore but it does not have proper stands etc.

I was watching yesterdays D/N match in Vizag on TV. The stadium is very good and also has flood lights.
Karnataka has only one cricketing venue. Reason Karnataka's obsession with B'lore.
Karnataka Govt.does not think beyond Bangalore. Apart from B;lore we should develop a second stadium in the state. Most large states have two or more cities hosting ODIs.

Inspite of promoting Vizag, Andhra Pradesh has a global city in Hyderabad.
The global city is just a reason for not seeing beyond Bangalore.

If cricket venues are devoleped on basis of region, then besides Bangalore(South Karnataka) and Hubli(North Karnataka), Mangalore/Udupi (coastal karnataka) will also get as stadium.:bash:

Gentem,

I can not buy your arguement on Hyderabad. I too have travelled outside India on several ocassions. I found that those who do not have much Geographical language, know only Delhi and Mumbai as Indian cities. Those are the people who are probably not aware about many cities in their own country.

However, many foreigners who have at least little knowledge and interest in geography are well aware about Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai etc. apart from Delhi and Mumbai.

The residential projects would be developed at existing locations, and also include new locales including Chennai, Mysore and National Capital Region.

Ananda you have got it all wrong, What I meant is ----- Mysore has a lot of products to its credit--

Mysore Pak
Mysore Silk
Mysore malligae
Mysore dosa
Mysore rasam
Mysore dal
Mysore sandal
Mysore bonda
etc etc
Let me know if Baroda and Jaipur have these many products

--- Mysore to its credentials has Many firsts --

As Mysore City Corporation commissioner K S Raykar told The Times of India, “Ours is a planned city that has constantly upgraded the infrastructure. This has won us laurels.” For the record, Mysore Urban Development Authority, set up in 1904 by Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, was the first urban planning body constituted in India.

It is underground drainage (UGD) coverage, quality of drinking water and extension of sanitation facilities that took Mysore to the top in the sanitation rating by the Union urban development ministry. “Mysore has almost 100% UGD coverage while the treatment of sewage against generation is some 90%. During the survey, water samples from five lakes were tested for quality. Three of them were marked good. Even the BoD levels in the treated sewage was good. All this has managed to take us to the top,” Raykar, an expert in urban management, said.

The Mysore corporation is 150 years old. Even in 1862, the administrators were levying tax to maintain sanitation. A century ago, drinking water was harvested from the Cauvery, treated in the city and supplied to the residents.

Not to forget Mysore was nurtured by a great statesman Sir M Vishveshwaraya

Mysore still retains its old charm--

Mysore Dasara is just world famous---Let me know if baroda dasara or Jaipur dasara can beat us

I can keep listing out many such but......

If you are talking about city planning I would like to differ again--

You compare old parts of Jaipur and Mysore you will see the difference - Roads in Old Mysore are just too spacious unlike Jaipur's congested areas.I have not been to Baroda so cannot comment much.
Also I don't see Jaipur or Baroda coming any near to Mysore in cleanliness---
http://pib.nic.in/archieve/others/2010/may/d2010051103.pdf

Mysore, Jaipur and Baroda are great and unique in their own ways....

But Mysore is unique in many many ways--No city can be compared

Mysore, Udupi, Hadagali Mallige flowers patented (http://news.oneindia.in/2008/01/02/unique-southern-flowers-patented.html)

Bangalore, Jan 2: To protect the three local rare and unique flower species--Mysore Mallige (Jasmine), Udupi Mallige, and Hadagali Mallige—of Karnataka have been patented. The GI (Geographical Indication) status has provided excusive rights to the local community to cultivate these three crops and continue to grow for 10 years and more.

Mysore Dosa--Being a Kannadiga you must atleast know to diffrentiate Mangalore neer dosa/Davangere Bene dosa and Mysore dosa
Anyways TIP 3:

One variant of the masala dosa, the Mysore masala dosa, is served with both coconut and onion chutneys. In Bangalore, the masala dosa is usually served with a red chutney applied to its inside surface. This peculiarity lends itself to a unique taste. The red chutney usually has generous amounts of garlic (traditionally garlic is not used in masala dosa especially in the Brahmin community), and adds a nice flavor to the dosa when it is fried with ghee. In recent times this has become popular in other parts of Karnataka. Davanagere benne masala dosa is another variant of the masala dosa from Karnataka. It is named after Davanagere in Karnataka. It is prepared by adding liberal doses of butter (benne) and also a potato filling (palya) that is unique. It is devoid mostly of any extra ingredients and is just mashed potato. The Rava dosa or Rave dosay is another variant which is made from semolina. Ragi dosa and Ade or Aday dosa are other variants that are native to Karnataka.

SOUND & LIGHT SHOW AT PALACE ON KANNADA RAJYOTSAVA DAY

Mysore, Oct. 23 (JP)- The much-troubled Mysore Palace Sound & Light Show will finally be inaugurated on Nov.1.

Deputy Director of Palace Board P.V. Avaradi, speaking to SOM this morning, said the political turmoil in the State had led to the temporary shelving of the Show.

"Since Kannada Rajyotsava Day is fast approaching the inauguration has been scheduled for that day," he said.

It may be recalled that right from its very inception the Mysore Palace Sound & Light Show had run into a series of hurdles. First it was the script written by Linguist Lingadevaru Halemane, now Director of Rangayana, which was not approved by Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar as he felt an unnecessary emphasis was being given to Tipu Sultan.

Wadiyar's objection was that since the programme was meant to showcase the genesis of the Wadiyar dynasty, there was no need to give undue importance to the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It was also learnt that Chief Minister Yeddyurappa was also in favour of the revised script. A three-member team comprising History Professors of Mysore University and Halemane reworked the script to the satisfaction of both the Wadiyar and the CM.

"We are not planning on an elaborate inauguration. Since District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas has said that he would like to have a look at the programme before it is shown we are going to show it to him in the next few days. The inauguration will be very simple and will be done in the presence of the CM. An announcement will be made in the local media," Avaradi said.

MCC'S ROAD-SWEEPING MACHINE TO CLEAN THE CITY FROM OCT. 25
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/1481/imageus.jpg

Mysore, Oct. 23 (KK&KMC)- Dasara, with the blessings of the almighty, has been a grand success as usual. However, it is the tall claims made by the 'all mighty" elected representatives and the bureaucrats that have remained unfulfilled.

Claims were made by the City Corporation before Dasara that all major roads in the City will be asphalted ahead of the festival and that the roads will be cleaned in the night, not by the Pourakarmikas, but by using machines.

The road repair works are half-done at several places and whatever work that has been done, has been spoiled by the rains. The truckmounted road-sweeping machine, though had arrived in the city on the Dasara day itself, will be put to use on Oct. 25, said Corporation Health Officer Dr. Nagaraj, adding that the machine, imported from England, costs Rs. 95.15 lakh. Besides, two footpath cleaning machines worth Rs. 16 lakh have also been purchased by the Corporation, it is learnt.

During Dasara, the services of 288 Pourakarmikas were used in three shifts to clean the main roads in the city, Dr. Nagaraj said.

The Dasara Committee members had also promised of erecting galleries to seat people all along the Jumboo Savari route from K.R. Circle to Bannimantap, which did not materialise. However, chairs were provided under a shamiyana, which accommodated a few hundred people.

Another assurance given by the Committee members was of mobile toilets. Mayor Sandesh Swamy said that a couple of toilets did come to the city, but he himself did not know where they were used. The Corporation Commissioner was not available to comment on this matter. It is strange that the novel facility was not formally inaugurated.
SOM

First of all the authorities must clear footpath encroachments around the suburban bus stand area.
According to my guess the footpath width is about 13 feet and I find small shops permanently erected (with a concrete pedestal at the base) occupying about 8 feet width---Leaving just 5 feet approx for the pedestrians. I did mail the authorities regarding the same looks like some vested interest is not allowing them to carry out the demolition drive or they are lazy to do so.

Mysore Pak: Can anyone tell the difference between Mysore Pak made in Mysore, Mandya or Davanagere. Its all the same everywhere. Its just a name given to a sweet prepared in a certain region (Old Mysore state). It has got nothing to do with the city.

Mysore Silk: Is there a marked difference between the silk grown in MYS city/region and other regions of the state?(like Bidar) :)
NO, there is hardly any difference.
If there is a thing called Mysore Silk then ‘Mysore’ refers Old Mysore state and not the city.

Mysore malligae: I agree with you about the three varieties of Jasmine in the state.

Mysore Dosa: Is there a thing called Mysore Dosa? If you meant to say Mysore Masala dosa, then the difference between various kinds of Masala dosas are very small and insignificant. Mysore masala dosa is just a variant of Masala Dosa nothing more. (Can be considered city specific)
The so called Mangalore Neer Dosa is very different from Masala dosas. (Assuming you know the basic difference between the two)
Note: There is nothing called a Mangalore Neer Dosa, it is just called Neer Dose.
Quoting your statement 'Being a Kannadiga you must atleast know to diffrentiate Mangalore neer dosa/Davangere Bene dosa and Mysore dosa'. The way you have put Neer dose and Davanagere Bene dosa in the same bracket shows your knowledge or the lack of it. Both are very different. You can ask me if you need some tip on this.

Mysore Rasam: Really I have never heard of this.:ohno:(Even most of the people from Karnataka might not know about this. Correct me if I am wrong)

Mysore sandal: Is there a marked difference (smell, colour, size, genetic) between the sandalwood grown in MYS city/region other regions? As far as I know all sandalwood grown throughout Karnataka is same. If there is a thing called Mysore Sandalwood then ‘Mysore’ refers Old Mysore state and not the city.

Its just a name given to a tile prepared in a certain design..so i will launch a PIL in High Court tomorrow to rename them as curve-fit tiles..you think i'm :bash: to do that?? these tiles hav been linked with mangalore because they were originally made here..so is the case with mysore pak..those u find in Mandya or Davanagere are photocopies of the original..u can help by filing a PIL against jaipur foot as its technical name is 'prosthetic limb' which is manufactured throughout india..

Mysore Silk: Is there a marked difference between the silk grown in MYS city/region and other regions of the state?(like Bidar)
NO, there is hardly any difference.
If there is a thing called Mysore Silk then ‘Mysore’ refers Old Mysore state and not the city.
dude when did u wear silk sarees to find such intricate differences??:lol:please trial kancheepuram silk and inform people if its different..if its not, ill join u in suing kancheepuram vendors for selling non-exquisite stuff..better bring at least one mysore silk, ordinary silk and banaras silk saree each from ur closet to compare wid kanchi silk..

(Assuming you know the basic difference between the two)
Note: There is nothing called a Mangalore Neer Dosa, it is just called Neer Dosa.
neer dosa is often linked to mlore and so is benne dosa to davangere..mysore masala dosa is a variety which is not found in karnataka as all masala dosa varieties are clubbed..but if u move out of the state, u will find all standard hotels having two types of masala dosas-normal masala dosa and mysore masala dosa..:)

Mysore Rasam: Really I have never heard of this.(Even most of the people from Karnataka might not know about this. Correct me if I am wrong):ohno:
it is a variety of rasam usually made in the mysorean housholds..do come to my house to try it..

The characteristics of any organism changes wid location..u can find that sandalwood grown elsewhere has thinner trunk compared to ones that grow in forests around mysore..join me in looting those..i dont want skinny trees..:lol:i dont want skinny accomplices either..so gain weight if u r thin..

Mysore bonda: Since I don’t know about this thing I will not comment. Someone can enlighten us on this.
even I don’t know about this thing I will not comment. Someone can enlighten us on this.

Mysore dal: ?????????????
it is masoor dal..its a misnomer..or may be there is really something called mysore dal..not sure about this..

What Next???
waiting for ur reply..

One subtle suggestion..please tighten ur shorts before trying to pull someone else's..

First low-cost heart hospital near Mysore

Mathang Seshagiri, TNN, Oct 24, 2010, 01.27am IST

BANGALORE: Have your heart fixed for just Rs 50,000 by skilled surgeons operating in homely hospitals with a family member to care for you. If that sounds too far-fetched, think again. For, India's first low-cost hospital will be up and running in Mysore early next year.

These state-of-the art hospitals will be built at a cost of Rs 16 crore, about one-fifth the cost of constructing a 300-bed super-speciality hospital.

The brainchild of renowned cardio-surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, this unique hospital will be piloted in Mysore and then in Siliguri (West Bengal) and Bhubaneswar (Orissa). The Union health ministry has evinced interest in the project.

"The state government has given us 10 acres and the plan is to set up 50 hospitals in two years. We need to perform 25 lakh heart surgeries every year in the country, but we do only 90,000 surgeries now," Dr Shetty told STOI.

Narayana Hrudayalaya has tied up with Larsen & Toubro to execute the Mysore project which uses pre-fabricated material transported from Puducherry. The general wards will receive daylight to the desired levels. Only the OT complex and pre/post operation and ICU areas will have a conventional concrete structure.

"Most hospitals today have huge vertical structures with heavy airconditioning. The best sanitiser for hospital is sunlight and fresh air. We don't want patients to feel intimidated by the hospital. Besides having the best medical facilities, we'll allow one family member to provide moral support to patients," Dr Shetty said.

In this chain of hospitals, heart surgeries will be performed for Rs 50,000 (compared to Rs 2 lakh or more depending on degree of complications) and other surgeries like gall bladder and hernia will cost between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000.

While hospitals in Mysore, Bhubaneshwar and Siliguri will come up on land given at subsidized rates by the respective state governments, other hospitals will come up on the public private partnership model. "We haven't come up with a name yet of these hospitals," Dr Shetty said

Mate,

There is no filp or no flop. The issue raised by you was that Hyderabad was ignored by foreigners and Bangalore is more renouned than Hyd. I was catagoric in saying you can't generalise it.

Show me what is filp and what is flop here??

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/iw/2009/08/02/stories/2009080250681500.htm

Mr Alastair Hughes, Chief Executive Officer – Asia Pacific, JLLM, asserts Chennai is not as well known in the international markets where Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are familiar names. The city is rated on a par with the emerging tier II destinations such as Hyderabad and Pune. The gap is in the absence of aggressive marketing and policy that position it well, he feels.

...

Another major differentiator between Chennai and a city such as Bangalore or Mumbai is the lifestyle. Chennai needs to do a lot more on the quality of lifestyle it has to offer. What has Chennai on offer to attract people to make it a home? There are no recreational facilities of international standards.

The couple of golf courses in the city date back to the pre-independence era. Bangalore, on the other hand, has a dozen golf courses, he points out. Quality residential space is another feature that is in short supply; International schools – there is a huge waiting list in the few that are available, he says.

Mysore to have separate transport corporation
PTI, Oct 26, 2010, 04.26pm IST
BANGALORE: The palace city of Mysore would have a separate transport corportion, Karnataka transport minister R Ashoka said today.

This entity would be on the lines of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Ashoka told reporters here.

The decision to have a separate corporation for Mysore was taken to meet certain norms that the Centre placed in National Urban Renewal Mission Programme, under which it alloted some 150 buses to the city, which has also attracted World Bank funds for its development, as well as keeping in mind the future development of the city, he said.

Ashoka also said Mandya would have city bus services and about 50 buses would be purchased for the purpose.

A satellite bus terminal would be built at Peenya to decongest the main hub in Majestic area.

In the main bus city bus stand, 7.2 acres of land had been handed over to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd for the metro project at a cost of Rs 75 crore, he added.

The Transport Department has planned to start city bus services in district headquaters such as Tumkur, Gulbarga, Hubli and Mangalore, Ashoka said.

Bus stands in Hassan, Bantwal Cross Road and Hunsur would be developed under public-private-partnership model, he added.

The Minister said the KSRTC became debt-free two months ago after clearing loan amount of Rs 500 crore.

He said the Traffic & Transit Management Centre at Kengeri here would be named after Kengal Hanumanthaiah, who built the iconic Vidhan Soudha here, while the one at Shantinagar would adorn the name of A B Vajpayee.
