s.yogendra March 5th, 2011, 10:06 AM New age post offices are here
http://www.deccanherald.com
From a modest beginning, India Post is now the leading postal services provider in the world. The rise of ‘postal power’ is visible with modern looks some post offices have been donning in city, writes Eswar Singh K R
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1330/postoffice.jpg (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/postoffice.jpg/)
Narayana Rao, an octogenarian living in Saraswathipuram was a regular at the post office in his locality for more than five decades now. On Monday last week, the swanky new look of the post office surprised him when he visited the place after a break of six months.
The post office has got a corporate touch with new furnishings and modern infrastructure. The flashy corporate look of the office and its pleasing clean ambience made Rao beam with happiness for he had been attached to it ever since he opened a small savings account in 1960s.
It is the second post office in the city to get the new-look after Head post office (HPO) was renovated.
Surprises
For people like Rao, there are more surprises in the offing from the India Post. The modernisation process is a big leap in the direction of modest post offices and enterprising India Post embracing Information Communication Technology (ICT) in a big way in the months and years to come - don’t be surprised if a postal saving account holder is seen drawing money from India post ATMs.
If the Project Arrow of the India Post has entailed for the upgradation of select post office infrastructure like HPO on Irwin road, Saraswathipuram PO and K R Nagar rural post office, the India Post 2012 IT modernisation project has laid down the roadmap to embrace the ICT.
N Prakash, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices told City Herald that work on computerisation of all available data on customers in HPO and Saraswathipuram PO was completed.
Both these offices have been upgraded on similar lines to maintain uniformity in post office look all over the country. Other post offices will also be brought under the Arrow in phased manner. Recently, Mysore district has many first to its credit.
As Mysore is among the first few districts to be covered under the Unique Identification (UID) project, the HPO has disbursed more than 3.5 lakh UID cards so far in the district.
“The work is delivered without hindering the existing mail delivery service and with the existing personnel in the post offices in city and district. We expect to deliver thrice the number of delivered cards in the future days till the project completes,” says Prakash.
While, the HPO Mysore has the credit of selling the highest number of gold coins in the State.
“Though being a Sunday, we opened the counter on Akshaya Tritiya day. The HPO sold 380 gms of gold coins of various denominations like 5 gms, 8 gms and 10 gms. We ran out of stock and had to transfer some coins from neighbouring HOs,” Assistant Superintendent Anil Joshi adds.
According to Joshi, the India Post has embarked on a mission to provide a range of service under one roof. Besides the traditional services, post offices now offer EMS speed post, business post - for bulk mailers, bill mail service, direct post, Express parcel post, logistics post, e-post, e-payment, retail post, media post (ads on post cards, letters etc), mutual funds and insurance policies, pass port services, public provident funds scheme and other financial services, says Anil Joshi.
The legacy
For India Post, the beginning was modest with a simple objective - to keep you in touch with your loved ones.
As the face of India changes, the India Post have evolved into a dynamic, multi-dimensional organisation with an international presence.
India Post is the largest banking organisation backed by 6 lakh dedicated workforce and is spread over 1.5 lakh post offices in India.Under India Post 2012, India Post aims to establish a data/disaster recovery centre, house all the transactions and data with a secure and centrally governed IT system. It also aims at nation-wide networking of all the post offices and begin core banking services on lines of PSU banks.
s.yogendra March 5th, 2011, 10:11 AM Dr Raj’s favourite, reopened
http://www.deccanherald.com
For many, Hotel Sujatha was a place to savour crispy hot dosas and filter coffee. For others, it was a place where they could get a glimpse of late cine actor Dr Rajkumar. Re-opened after a gap of 12 years, the famed hotel is back in business, writes Manish
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5160/hotelsujata.jpg (http://img231.imageshack.us/i/hotelsujata.jpg/)
Whenever late Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Dr Rajkumar used to visit Mysore, thousands of his fan following knew of one place where they could get a glimpse of the superstar. Hotel Sujatha (near Highway Circle, Bannimantap).
The euphoria was palpable when the veteran cine actor would come out on the porch of the hotel and wave at the massive crowds, leading to loud whistles and cheers. However, after the hotel closed down in 1998, the fans were left in lurch.
After 12 years, the hotel was reopened and rechristened as ‘Sujatha Residency’ in May last year by partners Arun Pandit and Dheeraj Hegde. Pandit explains, “We took nearly one-and-half years to renovate the place. When we bought it on lease, all the doors and window frames, had been taken away by miscreants.”
Speaking to City Herald, Arun Pandit reminisced about the times when he was a college student. “When we used to be in college, Hotel Sujatha was known as a posh hotel. If somebody was having his meal there, then he was known to be quite influential,” he recalls. “It had its own magic,” he adds.
“Whenever Dr Rajkumar used to visit this hotel three to four rooms used to be booked exclusively for him and his entourage. Most of the times, it is said that, he used to stay in Room 109,” he says excitedly.
Pandit recollects the words of the former owners, “The make-up artistes would be sharing the adjoining rooms and the gates of the hotel had to closed owing to the large number of fans that would be waiting to see the star actor.” Other film stars including Dharmendra and Ambarish were also guests of this hotel.
Built as a guest house initially by Class I Contractors Basavegowda and Boregowda, the hotel became a favourite for retired professionals owing to its crispy dosas and filter coffee.
At an age when fancy names rule roost in the tourism industry, Pandit says, “We decided to retain the name as Sujatha because people still remember and can associate with it. If you ask any old-timer, he will definitely tell you about the beauty of the place.”
With changing times, Sujatha Residency now boasts of wi-fi connectivity, 24 hour room service, flat screen TVs and satellite transmission.
Spread over one acre, space is a luxury at the renovated and refurbished hotel.
“If a hotelier had such a huge space, then probably he would have built 150 rooms. But we have only 24 rooms and we also want our clients to have that feel of spaciousness,” Pandit remarks.
However, the Unique Selling Point (USP) of the Sujatha Cafe are the crispy dosas and filter coffee.
Describing the menu, Pandit pointed out that the morning breakfast was South Indian, while the lunch included both South and North Indian fare.
For those who frequented Hotel Sujatha during its heydays, another chance awaits them to pass on the legacy and relive cherished moments.
s.yogendra March 5th, 2011, 10:18 AM MCC to launch ‘Operation cellar’
Mysore, March 4, DHNS :
Do you own a complex (commercial or housing) where cellars are used against the set purpose of creating parking facilities? If yes, it’s time you clear on your own, or else Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will soon swing into action.
The city corporation has issued orders to demolish such structures from Temple Road in V V Mohalla here, as a prelude to the massive drive against the cellars, across the city, MCC Commissioner K S Raykar informed the council on Friday.
Taking cognisance of the complaints, the city corporation had identified 226 such violations after verifying the building plans. Notices were served on the owners subsequently, before issuing another missive intimating them about the cancellation of
trade licences.
Corporator T V Girish Prasad who took exception to starting the drive from Temple Road, that comes under the ward he represents, urged the commissioner to go for a simultaneous operation at different parts in the city.
The commissioner in his reply turned down this plea citing the reasons of inadequate manpower.
Footpath encroachment
Continuing on anti-encroachment plans, the commissioner said that the local body was also aware of traders on D Devaraj Urs Road and other roads encroaching footpaths again, after clearing the same in a drive held in the previous year. All these extensions too will be removed during the next drive, he warned.
He also warned of initiating action against officers of all the nine zones, if they had issued completion report (CR) despite violations up to 10/9/2009 and those who have colluded with the private parties allowing unauthorised constructions.
This follows the issue raised by Corporator R Lingappa, who blamed MCC officers for the mess, allowing the violations right under their nose. He cited the example of a prominent hotel near Rotary School off JLB Road here, where a bar is coming up on the terrace of that hotel.
He asked the authorities, whether they have been aware of the new facility and its legality? If yes, why were they dithering on initiating action at the early stages itself, rather than waiting for the violation to happen?
Owing to the corporators’ demand, the commissioner also clarified that completion report would be issued to the buildings where violations are below five per cent.
However, in the case of those buildings where violations are found above the afore mentioned scale, it would be regularised under ‘Akrama Sakrama’, that would be effected soon, after imposing huge penalty.
Earlier as soon as the council convened, it was only Mayor Sandesh Swamy and Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath on the dais. The commissioner and host of officers, mostly assistant commissioners were yet to arrive, irking the corporators. Meanwhile, the commissioner arrived, but it failed to silence the corporators.
The commissioner explained that the assistant commissioners were on census duty, but to no avail, as the corporators created uproar. The mayor had to defer the meeting for half-an-hour giving time for the officers to attend the council.’

Ace cricketer Anil Kumble, vice chairman of Karnataka wildlife board, has helped Mysore Zoo grow rich. The Zoo on Sunday said pure Asiatic lions from Gujarat have arrived at the conservation centre. Kumble persuaded Gujarat CM Narendra Modi to spare the wild cats for the zoo. This is first in 10 years that Gujarat government has spared the Asiatic lions outside the state, the zoo executive director K B Markandaiah said. They are quarantined and will be allowed to their enclosure after two weeks.

Clear encroachments on feeder canals, officials told
MYSORE: Continuing the drive against encroachments on government land in the district, Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta has directed officials to clear encroachments on feeder canals to ensure fresh inflow into Karanji lake.
A press release said a meeting of revenue officials was convened here on Thursday and the Deputy Commissioner said that survey reports clearly underlined the presence and extent of the feeder canals and added that they should be cleared.
Mr. Gupta noted that land belonging to certain individuals at Block Number 111 belonged to the Shooting Range as per the original map. He directed the Deputy Director of Land Records to prepare a report to reclaim the land.
He also instructed the officials to take steps to reclaim the revenue land belonging to the Government and directed the revenue staff to map survey number 1 at Vijayashreepura and Survey Number 4 at Kurubarahalli.
The MUDA was directed to clear encroachments along the canal and safeguard government property at Vijayashreepura immediately. Mr. Gupta called for identification of 94 acres of land belonging to the MUDA in Vijayshreepura and sought a report from the MUDA Commissioner about the steps taken to clear the encroachments. Mr. Gupta pointed out that a government complex could be constructed on Survey Number 1 on Hunsur Road where 27 acres was vacant. He directed MUDA to transfer the land to the district administration.

Nanjangud-Mysore project cleared
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore March 07, 2011, 0:53 IST
The Rs 434 crore plan for improving and expanding roads in Mysore and the backward district of Chamarajanagar is getting ready for implementation.
“The tender process is on for its execution under a private-public partnership model. There was some delay over the issue of road toll collection. After sorting out the issue, the Centre has finally cleared the project and the work may start sometime next month,” Chamarajanagar MP R Dhruvanarayan told Business Standard at the weekend.
The project envisages converting the accident-prone Mysore-Nanjangud stretch of the Bangalore-Ooty Road into a four-way lane road. The improvement of this road, NH-212 has assumed urgency in the wake of repeated accidents that have claimed lives.
The vital national highway is witnessing increasing vehicular traffic while the road is in a bad condition. In a major bus mishap as many as 31 people met watery grave when a tempo fell into a road-side tank recently.
Apart from the existing bridge, one more bridge would be built across the Kabini at Nanjangud, he said.
The expansion of the 26-km stretch of the national highway will also provide a direct four-lane link to Bangalore from this temple town.

Mysore, Mar 6: The cultural capital of Karnataka will have four new layouts, according to Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) chairman L Nagendra and commissioner Dr C J Betsurmath.
The demand has been steadily on the rise over the last years and thousands of aspirants have been looking forward to buying sites and houses. But there was no land available.
Now MUDA has sought permission from the state government to develop four layouts, offering 15,000 housing sites on an area of about 1,500 acres, which will include 434-acre 'Nalvadi Krishnaraja Nagar' next to the Lingambudhi lake and 352-acre 'Swarna Jayanti Nagar' in Lalitadripura II Stage, according to Nagendra.
About 10% of the sites will be reserved for the economically backward classes. On the basis of demand, high-rises may be constructed. Layouts in Keregalli near the Ring Road will be allotted during the coming four months, says Dr Betsurmath.

engineer.akash March 8th, 2011, 09:20 AM Nothing special about special grants
MYSORE: Shortly after he assumed power in 2008, CM B S Yeddyurappa announced Rs 100-crore special grants for city's development. Soon, the Mysore City Corporation received directives on spending the grants that specified that funds should be utilized for big projects. Perhaps the MCC did anything but that. It used the money to asphalt roads and lay drains and develop burial grounds. Of the five subways planned by MCC, two are through. But one is locked now and the other was closed till recently. Worse still, till February-end, projects worth Rs 60 crore were completed while 15 projects were still on.
There are now complaints that the grants aimed at putting in place infrastructure or upgrading them are being diverted for minor projects as a means of populism. The routine works of the civic body like asphalting roads are being taken up with the special funds, complains former mayor Ayub Khan. The funds came to the urban body when he was the mayor. There were directives to utilize the funds for big projects, which was given a go-by, he states.
The MCC proposed several projects that were vetted by empowered committee headed by then district minister Shobha Karandlaje. According to Ayub Khan, the corporation asked for Rs 50 crore from the special grants to take up reconstruction of the century-old Devaraja Market. It was turned down by the panel, he says.
Take the case of subways. The panel decided on five of them of which two-- one connecting Mysore Palace to Dasara exhibition grounds and other across Sayyaji Rao Road near Krishnarajendra Circle-- were completed. Apart from the complaints about their designs, it is said they are not in tune with the heritage environs at the sites. There are questions about their utility now. The one near the front gate of the Palace is locked. Reason: No traffic. Blame it on lack of planning by the MCC and the panel, many projects are not helping the city in the desired way. A case in point is the footpath sweeping machines that are now gathering dust at the cellar of the MCC.
Besides the mayor, the corporation commissioner is on the panel. The DC is its member secretary and legislators and MP are the members. There are complaints that information about the projects implemented under the scheme is not freely available even to elected representatives. The funds are not used for permanent works. "I have expressed my displeasure about this to the panel," former mayor Purushothama, notes. And there are charges of discrimination in allocation of funds.

Lakes to be rejuvenated
MYSORE: The long neglected needs of the lakes in Mysore district are being attended to now.
Thanks to the budgetary allocation, 148 lakes will be rejuvenated at a cost of Rs 40.10 crore. The aim is to revive the water bodies and improve the depleting groundwater table. DC Harsh Gupta on Monday said the lakes will be desilted before the onset of monsoon so that their water holding capacity is increased. It will help the villagers, he stated.
The allocation has been prepared and is put at Rs 5 crore per assembly segment. However, Chamundeshwari segment has got Rs 5.93 crore. The allocation is extended to rural constituencies only.

Lake restoration project to be taken up next month
Staff Correspondent
MYSORE: Water bodies in Mysore district will get a new lease of life with the district administration taking up desilting and restoration of lakes.
One hundred and forty eight lakes have been identified for restoration at a cost of Rs. 40.1 crore.
Work is expected to be taken up in April.
Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta said, in a press release issued here on Monday, that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had allocated funds in his State Budget for these works. In the Varuna Assembly constituency, 10 lakes would be rejuvenated at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. A sum of Rs. 5 crore would be spent on restoring 23 lakes in Chamundeshwari constituency; Rs. 5 crore for rejuvenating 12 lakes in T. Narsipur; Rs. 5 crore would be spent on 19 lakes in Nanjangud; Rs. 4.95 crore for reviving 20 lakes in K.R. Nagar ; Rs. 5.13 crore on 21 lakes in H.D. Kote, and Rs. 5 crore each for restoring 23 and 20 lakes in Hunsur and Periyapatna respectively, Mr. Gupta said.
Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta said the proposal for the lake restoration project would be sent to the Government for approval.

Nothing as such, land is in possession for the expressway but farmers are not ready to part their lands for the proposed townships along the highway.BMIC says unless every inch of land is handed to it as per the original framework it is not going to start work on either the expressway or townships, that is the problem. Why would a builder build expressway while giving up on township plans? It makes no sense to him. ;)

engineer.akash March 12th, 2011, 02:06 PM MUDA RECLAIMS 2.5 ACRE LAND
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=27715&type=news
Encroachers evicted, illegal structures razed
Mysore, Mar. 12 (KMC&RK)- In continuance of the 'Operation Demolition' in which encroachers are being evicted from government property in the city, five illegal structures erected on a 2.5 acre prime plot of land in Vijayashreepura, along the Hunsur Road, belonging to MUDA, were demolished early this morning.
The illegal structures belonged to a car door-setting shop, a vehicle service station, a stone cutting unit and three small houses. The structures, encroached upon by some prominent persons, were rented or sub-leased in benami accounts to the traders.
The plot of land, situated along the main road, is estimated to be worth several crores of rupees.
The demolition work undertaken by 50 gangmen using two excavators and trucks lasted from 5.30 am to 7 am. MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, along with Zonal Officers Krishnamurthy, Panduranga, Triyambaka, Gurupadaswamy, Tahasildar Manjunatha Swamy and others supervised the work.
Jayalakshmipuam Police Inspector Mahadevaiah and 50 of his staff provided security to the demolition workers. However, there was no resistance from the owners of the structure as they had been served notices of eviction some days ago, as per the Deputy Commissioner's orders.
DC Harsha Gupta had examined the records of the land. After ascertaining that the plot belonged to the MUDA and was encroached upon, he passed an order for their eviction.
The 2.5 acre plot is a portion of the 27 acres of MUDA land, most of which remains vacant.
Another piece of land located on the other side of the road, a part of 94 acres of MUDA property which also comes under Vijayashreepura, where a car garage had been constructed illegally, was voluntarily dismantled by its owner, after being served eviction notice. If not, that would also have been demolished today by the MUDA gangmen.
Dr. Betsurmath said that more such illegal structures in the city would be demolished, as part of the encroachment eviction drive. The evicted plot of land will be fenced off tomorrow, he added.

Interestingly, the students have chosen only shabby walls possibly to give them a new look and meaning.

engineer.akash March 18th, 2011, 06:42 PM State unveils plans to spread alternate medical practices
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore March 19, 2011, 0:21 IST
Mysore will soon have a college for Yoga and Naturopathy which will include a 100-bed hospital. The state has sanction Rs 1.70 crore for the construction of the college building on the Krishnarajasagar Road, near the Princess Krishnajammanni Tuberculosis Sanatorium (PKTS). State director of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) G N Srikantiah said in Mysore that the building would be ready in about 2-3 years.
The college will have ayurveda, yoga, unani and homeopathy. There is presently no Siddha branch.
It will include a 100-bed hospital where patients will be treated with the traditional system of Indian medicine. The ‘Mane Maddu’ (house remedies) programme was being continued by the department. Around 650 Ayurveda clinics spread across the state were adopting two villages each and propagating awareness on lifestyle habits, preventive measures and simple household remedies for minor ailments by using traditional methods. The idea was to improve and maintain the general health of the rural people with least cost, Srikantiah said.
In this direction, he said the Department was conducting public health programmes in association with NGOs.
It was organising a three-day training programme for AYUSH doctors, alternative therapists, natural therapists, NGOs and interested general public about yoga, naturopathy and acupressure in Mysore from March 25, in association with Vijaya Foundation.
The workshop would lay emphasis on pain management diagnosis and treatment of chronic illness through acupressure, thus making cost effective remedies available to common man without any drugs either at no cost or low cost, he said.
Mysore Ayurveda College Principal Aruna said the workshop would also train AYUSH and allopathy doctors working in primary health care delivery system, which caters to more than 80 per cent of the illness in rural areas. It is expected to give training to at least 200 delegates.
Devendra Vora, renowned nature cure and acupressure therapist, whose “Health in Your Hands” book in Indian and foreign languages has been sold over 4 million and who has treated over 200,000 patients, will conduct the workshop.

s.yogendra March 19th, 2011, 01:42 AM City shows the way in ‘zero waste management’
deccanherald (http://www.deccanherald.com)
The Mysore City Corporation has taken up setting up of zero waste management units in another four wards after its success in Kumbarkoppal. It is also making preparations to obtain license to sell compost produced by these units under the brand name of ‘Mysore Krishik Bangara’ or ‘Mysore Gold’ in the market very shortly, writes Ramesh S Kebbehundi
Solid waste management is one of the biggest challenges faced by urban local bodies thanks to rapid urbanisation. Much attention has been given in recent years for the safe disposal of waste generated in the cities. Solid wastes are those organic and inorganic materials that are generated and it's very important to dispose them scientifically as it may cause pollution to land, air and water.
According to an estimate, 400 tonnes of waste is generated daily in the city. It has become a herculean task for the MAC to dispose it. A treatment plant is set up at JP Nagar where 250 tonnes of bio-degradable waste is treated.
This unit is able to treat only wet waste such as rotten vegetables and fruits to convert into compost manure.
Daunting task
But the biggest challenge has been the disposal of recyclable waste (dry waste). Heaps of recyclable or dry wastes are found at the Excel treatment plant, in the absence of proper disposal unit.
Even the MAC is facing criticism from citizens and other environment-friendly organisations due to improper disposal of dry waste at the treatment plant.
At present the MAC has put pourakarmikas on the job of disposal of garbage and given a contract for the maintenance of SWM. The civic body is spending crores of rupees on this job to keep the city neat and clean.
In the midst of all these, the MAC has involved non-governmental organisations and implemented several new methods and technology to encourage the solid waste management.
Three years ago, the MAC roped in the services of Federation of Mysore City Corporation Ward Parliament in the disposal of solid waste management. Recently, the job of SWM was given to this resident welfare association in Ward Number 28 at Kumbarkoppal.
The zero waste management units have been set up by MAC with the help of the NGO.
Now that an NGO has shown how best the SWM could be managed in a scientific manner.
Representatives from various corporations, TMC, CMC and TPs have visited the ward to study the functioning of zero waste management. The vice-president of that NGO and Director of Tourism Development Institute Professor K S Nagapathy has been invited by many urban bodies to share knowledge on zero waste management.
The MAC has now found out solution through this unit to encourage zero waste management. Sheds have been constructed for the segregation of wastes and a separate unit for manufacturing compost at Kumbarkoppal unit.
This NGO has involved stree shakthi groups for door to door garbage collection and also to educate the residents on scientific disposal of waste.
Regularly, they collect both dry and wet waste from more than 5,000 houses in that ward and segregate the same into 28 items ranging from plastic covers to used plastic water bottles. This will be sold to various recycling units.
People from Bangalore, Pune and Tamil Nadu and other places are major buyers of this dry waste.
Today, the zero waste management units at Kumbarkoppal are earning thousands of rupees through manufacturing the compost manure and also from segregating waste.
There is a big demand for this manure from farmers and also from companies. The cost of this compost manure ` five per kilo.
The establishment of zero waste management units at Kumbarkoppal has saved lakhs of rupees which otherwise would have been spent on transportation and saved time and energy of pourakarmikas.
Before that the MAC was facing problems in shifting and disposal of waste from Hebbal to the Excel plant at J P Nagar.
MAC sources told City Herald that maintenance of zero waste management units is more feasible and cost effective when compared to awarding contract for the disposal of SWM to contractors.
Earlier, the MAC was paying ` 3.5 lakh to contractors per month for the disposal of solid waste.
But the total maintenance of zero waste management units including door -to -door garbage collection and production comes to around ` two lakh.
The sale of recyclable waste is fetching a handsome income for the MAC.
Extended
The MAC has already constructed sheds to set up the additional units in ward number 27 ( Hebbal and Lokanayaknagar), ward number 30 ( Brindavan, Gokulam and Manjunathapura), ward number 1 (Agrahara and Mysore Palace surroundings) and ward number 2 (Nalabeedhi and other surrounding places).
The sources said the MAC is interested in setting up such units in all wards but getting the land is a big problem.
The MCC is preparing to sell compost produced by zero waste management units under the brand name of 'Mysore Krishik Bangara' or 'Mysore Gold'. It has applied for license with the Department of Agriculture, as permission is required to sell the manure in open market. The sale of compost is expected to fetch lakhs of rupees revenue in the coming days.
President of Federation of Mysore City Corporation ward Parliament D Madegowda, who is instrumental in the success of zero waste management at Kumbarkoppal, said more than 75 urban local bodies of the state have evinced interest in setting up of zero waste management units.
s.yogendra March 19th, 2011, 01:51 AM Palace to have metro-style gates
the hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/03/19/stories/2011031953410500.htm)
Greater security:On an average, 10,000 to 15,000 tourists visit the Mysore Palace every day.
MYSORE: In a move to prevent unauthorised entry into the Amba Vilas Palace here, retractable flap-barrier gates, similar to the electronic gates at metro stations, will be installed at the main entrance of the palace while tokens will replace paper tickets.
A Nashik-based flap-barrier gate manufacturer, Shivananda Electronics, has been given the contract to supply and install three such gates that facilitate entry of one person at a time.
The installation work is expected to be over next month.
The three gates, which will have radio frequency identification readers, will cost about Rs. 24 lakh and orders have been placed for 5,000 tokens.
Mysore Palace Board Deputy Director P.V. Awaradi said the metro-type gates would help check entry of ticketless visitors and unauthorised persons into the palace, an important monument and a prominent tourist destination visited by lakhs of tourists every year. “From a security point of view, the system could be beneficial,” he said.
The gate opens only after a token is inserted into it and shuts as soon as the visitor passes through it, he explained. Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who is the executive officer of the Palace Board, had approved the installation of these gates and a work order was issued recently.
The entry fee to the palace for adults is Rs. 20 and Rs. 10 for children, and the fee for foreign tourists is Rs. 200. About three million tourists visited the palace during the calendar year 2010.
Why the move
“There were complaints about people entering the palace without tickets. Moreover, we wanted an effective system for entry and exit. Hence, the electronic gates were being installed,” Mr. Awaradi explained.
On an average, 10,000 to 15,000 tourists visit the palace every day. However, orders have been placed for only 5,000 tokens.
“Tokens are returned at the counter while leaving. If necessary, orders will be placed for additional tokens,” the Deputy Director said.
Sources in the Palace Board said “smart cards” may be introduced after some time for tourists coming in groups. The cards can be swiped into the reader provided at the gate for multiple entries at a time.

SMOOTH TRANSPORT:‘Sarot', a luxury tonga, has been introduced in Mysore for the benefit of tourists.
Mysore: The spoke-wheeled horse-drawn chariots or ‘sarots' that once ruled the roads will bring back memories of yesteryears and take tourists on an emotional and nostalgic journey. Working in this direction, the Mysore City Corporation has handed over four sarots to beneficiaries recently.
The MCC funds 50 per cent of the total cost on each chariot and arrangements had been made to provide loan for the remaining amount to the beneficiaries from Vijaya Bank. The beneficiaries were chosen from those who had registered with the Department of Tourism.
Twenty-one beneficiaries showed interest in buying the chariots. Accordingly, tenders were floated for the supply of 11 sarots and till date eight have been supplied. Horses were purchased for the four sarots from Bijapur.
MCC Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu told The Hindu that four sarots were handed over to the beneficiaries who managed to secure loan from the bank.
The loan applications of four other beneficiaries are being processed and they too will get the Sarots soon.
He said a sarot costs around Rs 1.75 lakh and a horse anywhere between Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 95,000. Each Sarot has a seating capacity for six persons.
Mr. Babu said beneficiaries have been instructed to get the cart and the horse insured. The chariots will be distributed in five phases.
A company from Patiala is supplying the chariots.
The authorities here are also making efforts to get suitable horses for the chariots from Bangalore, Bijapur, Pandarapura, Patiala and Lucknow.
s.yogendra March 19th, 2011, 08:15 PM MCC to impose ban on use of plastics, halt bogus Khatas
starofmysore (http://www.starofmysore.com/main.asp?type=news&item=27779)
Mysore, Mar. 19 (MTY&DM)- In one of the major decisions, the MCC has resolved to impose ban on use of plastics and to put a halt to bogus Khata Registration by making photograph imprints on Khatas mandatory.
The MCC's General Meeting held yesterday came up with three important resolutions.
Corporator B.L. Byrappa, who addressed the meeting, said the solid waste processing unit at Vidyaranyapuram has been emanating unbearable stench, causing a lot of hardship to the neighbouring residents.
Also, plastics accounted for half of the wastes that get collected at this unit and as such, the use of plastics should be banned in the better interest of the city, he urged.
Continuing, Byrappa alleged that a person had sold the government land behind Marigudi at Vidyaranyapuram to poor persons through fake documents. Later the district administration had been evacuating these poor persons, he said.
Mayor Sandesh Swamy making a response, said plastics of less than 40 microns will be banned in the city and the district administration will be urged to impose the ban in a phased manner commencing from June 1. Also, photograph imprints will be made compulsory while making any Khatas or Khata transfer in the MCC in order to prevent creation of fake documents. This system will come into effect from April 1 and criminal cases will be registered against those found indulging in the creation of fake documents, he added.
LANSDOWNE BLDG. ENCROACHMENT VACATED

Mysore, Mar. 19 (KMC&MTY)- Unauthorised constructions around the Lansdowne building were demolished and encroachments of the passage and other public utility spaces of the building were evicted by the Mysore City Corporation this morning.
Located adjoining the K.R. Circle and opposite the city bus stand, Lansdowne building is close to major landmarks, including the Mysore Palace and the Jaganmohan Palace.
Though there was some resistance from the traders in the initial stage as they opposed the MCC’s demolition drive, they were dispersed by the MCC’s Rapid Action Force personnel numbering 100, assisted by Police personnel.
A passage of the building had been blocked from either side and about 11 shops in the ground floor had encroached upon the space for their trade activities. The building has 55 shops in the ground floor and 44 on the first floor. Some have even installed rolling shutters, which the traders claim, was done after obtaining permission from the MCC in 1998. They also claimed that they had obtained permission for using the corridor, which the MCC authorities denied.
The building was inspected by the DC during January 2011 and notices were issued to the 11 shop owners to evict the encroachments and pull down the additional structures voluntarily. Since they did not comply with the order, another notice with an ultimatum of 24 hours was issued to them yesterday, following which, the demolition work was taken up today.
One of the traders, Dinesh Kumar, proprietor of Bhandari Medicals, said that the MCC was causing injustice to the traders as they had obtained prior permission in 1998. Since then, the rent of Rs. 200 had been hiked to Rs. 1,000, about which they did not object. "However, it is impossible to vacate the shops in such a short notice. We have not been given time to contact our lawyers," he said.
Three more buildings that have been illegally built on the backside of the Lansdowne building, will be demolished and the back lane of the market will be improved by providing sufficient lighting, drainage and asphalting.
Movement of public along the road adjacent to the building was banned during the demolition work. Since the building is an old heritage structure needing restoration, only crowbars, pickaxes and spades were used for the demolition instead of heavy machinery. Gas cutters were used to cut the rolling shutters and iron grills illegally installed by the traders.
Assistant Commissioners Thimmappa and Govindappa, Dy. Revenue Officer Nagendra, Assistant Revenue Officer Hanumanthe Gowda, engineers Harish and Nagaraj, Devaraja Police ACP V.A. Poojar, Inspector Shanthamallappa, Lashkar Police Inspector T.B. Rajanna and others were present.
Restoration: The Lansdowne Building here will be taken up for restoration without altering the profile of the original structure. A detailed study of the structure had been conducted by the MCC and a sum of Rs. 4 crore has been earmarked for the work. The experts who examined the profile of the Building had assured of restoring it without damaging the profile.

Mysore, Mar. 19 (KMC&KK)- The regal Sarot — the horse-drawn carts that have been a sy-mbol of Mysore heritage — that had been lying abandoned in the City Corporation's godown all these years, finally saw the light of the day on Thursday, with Mayor Sandesh Swamy and some Corporators taking a royal ride on the Sarots along the Raja Marga.
The four Sarots had been lying idle for want of money to buy horses to draw them. Now that the Corporation provided the required funds, four horses have been procured and the Sarots put into action.
The Mayor and others rode through the city, getting curious stares from the onlookers.
The Sarot drivers will be functioning under the guidance of Tourism Department, who will stipulate the routes and rates for them. The drivers will be provided uniforms resembling royal robes and will be imparted training about maintaining a pleasing personal appearance and being cordial to the tourists.
Running the Sarots in keeping with Mysore's heritage, is an ambitious project of the Corporation, for which a sum of Rs. 50 lakh had been earmarked in the 2010 budget. "Each Sarot was purchased at a cost of Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 3.5 lakh; made to order in Patiala, Punjab," said JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu, adding that the horses were bought from Bijapur at a cost of Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 85,000 each.
City Corporation has granted funds for 11 Sarots, of which only 8 have been procured so far and 4 have been provided with horses.
The Corporation's contribution is 50% while the rest will be availed as bank loan. The loan is to be repaid through monthly installments by the Sarot drivers and once the loan is cleared, they will become the owners of the Sarot.
Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath, Finance Committee President Shivakumar, Corporators Girish Prasad, Ramprasad, Chinni Ravi and others were present during the trial ride.

engineer.akash March 20th, 2011, 07:08 PM MYSORE: Allaying fears about visa restrictions imposed by the US, American Consulates economic and political officer Maxwell J Hamilton on Saturday said the US considers India as the fastest growing economy in the world.
Addressing entrepreneurs meeting summoned by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce to invite them to the 2nd summit of US-India Trade and Economics Suite 2011 being held in New York in May, he said all fears on the US governments restrictions on the visa are misrepresented.
He said the visa restrictions apply to only those companies with a work force of more than 50 and with over 50% foreign nationals on its payrolls. Money being collected on visas is being used for border security, he pointed out. Genuine visa demands will not be rejected, he added.
He said both strategically and economically, India is the key ally of US and this is the reason the latter is advocating a seat for India in UN security council. Even the sale of C-17 Globe Master and C-130 Super Hercules war planes indicates US involvement with India as its strategic partner. At least nine companies are ready to invest in India on nuclear energy sector, he revealed.
He said with Indias economy growing at a pace of 8 to 9 % US cannot neglect it. Our exports to India had quadrupled in the past two years and volume of bilateral trade crossed 39 billion dollars, he said, disclosing that India and US bilateral trade is on par with Netherlands and ranks 12th on the list of countries doing business with US. Now, I want to see a quantum jump in the volume of bilateral trade in the coming couple of years where India can overtake other countries, he felt , disclosing that US universities are opening up to Indian students.
Earlier talking to STOI, Hamilton said the US is keen and eyeing the Tier II cities like Mysore and Mangalore for expanding its trade relations . Particularly, Mysore being a beautiful city with a salubrious cool climate US entrepreneurs will explore infrastructure and investment facilities, he added.

s.yogendra March 20th, 2011, 10:03 PM Computerised film tickets to glam up movie watching
deccanherald (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/147346/computerised-film-tickets-glam-up.html)
The fun of watching a film still hasn’t lost its charm in heritage city, unlike its rich counterpart Bangalore.
But, the fact remains that whenever there is a new release, especially that of big stars, people are hesitant to throng theatres — fearing serpentine queue to buy tickets. It’s only in the case of few movies that theatres opt for advance booking, to avoid chaos. Yet, for every person who enthusiastically makes it to theatre ‘first day, first show’, there are many who would have opted otherwise.
Taking cognisance of the obvious travails and in a bid to make the process of film watching lot more fun, the film exhibitors here are planning to incorporate technology- computerised ticketing - to enable the cine lovers book tickets on a regular basis.
To study the pros and cons before going for it, two prominent theatres in the city- Gayathri and Sangam- will be equipped with the new technology, on a pilot basis, that is expected to begin from May.
Disclosing this to Deccan Herald, M R Rajaram, secretary of Mysore Film Exhibitors Association, and also a partner of ‘Gayathri’, said that the new facility will enable the cinegoers to book tickets for 28 shows (four shows in each of seven days in a week) in advance, making Mysore first in the State to go for it. Though the multiplexes have successfully adopted the change, single theatres had been dithering to embrace it. And, to make it a possibility, a trial run is conceived, Rajaram added.
How does it work?
Elaborating on the functioning, the exhibitor said, if a person intends to book ticket one day in advance, all he/ she has to do is book the ticket, during the work hours, at the theatre itself, by paying ` five extra per ticket fare, irrespective of classes. However, when compared to multiplexes, where the fare will be refunded only if the show is cancelled, here the amount will be returned even if they (those who have purchased in prior) cancel the tickets.
Another feature is-from a minimum of one to maximum of eight tickets will be issued. Apart from benefiting the audience, it also helps check selling of tickets in black and keep tab on the sales.
The software is developed in such a way that, the daily record of the tickets booked per show will be dispatched in the form of e-mail to a given ID.

R. Krishna Kumar (http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/homes-and-gardens/article1550101.ece)
The Mysore Urban Development Authority has announced plans to develop the city in a planned manner which includes upgrading of lakes and gardens
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/507/19bgpmysorevinoba505875.jpg (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/19bgpmysorevinoba505875.jpg/)
The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has announced ambitious plans to develop the city in a planned manner which includes development of lakes and gardens. This is in addition to its long-term plans of developing four new residential areas that entails distribution of nearly 10,000 sites. The proposal is pending before the State Government and has been reported in detail in these columns.
However, its thrust on greening Mysore deserves more focus in view of the growing urbanisation and the horizontal expansion of the city that threatens to reduce Mysore's green cover significantly. As per the City Development Plan of Mysore, the population growth of the city is identical to the growth in the State and it grew by 17.25 per cent for the period 1981-1991 and 21.12 per cent for the period 1991-01.
The City Development Plan submitted to the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) forecasts Mysore's population by 2020 to be around 15 lakh with a medium growth rate of 3.5 per cent and 19 lakh with a high growth rate of 4.5 per cent. This works out to 22.1 lakh with a medium growth of 3.5 per cent for the year 2030 and 29.5 lakh with a high growth rate of 4.5 per cent by 2030, which is significant. In view of the projected growth in the population, there is a perceived shift in the land use pattern and the percentage of area under parks and open spaces is expected to reduce from 13.74 per cent in 2001 to 7.52 per cent in 2011.
Large scale conversion
In view of the large-scale conversion of open spaces and agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes, the net area under greenery is expected to erode considerably and hence the MUDA's proposal for greening the city has been welcomed. In the first phase, around 25,000 saplings will be planted along the roads throughout the city to improve the green cover. Similarly, the MUDA has plans to take up development of parks and gardens in the residential layouts to provide the much-needed lung space for the residents.
Among the major lakes in the city, Kukkarahalli has received attention though the development and restoration has not matched the funds pumped in. However, the Karanji Nature Park developed by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka has been a major success and the lake which was a cesspool of polluted water, is now a jewel in the crown of Mysore.
With a slew of measures like reclaiming the feeder canal and clearing it of encroachments, ZAK conserved the lake and restored it to its original beauty. Now MUDA has earmarked Rs.75 lakh to fence the boundary of the lake. This is reckoned to be important in view of the growing encroachment of water bodies and the difficulties in establishing the lake bed area subsequently.
Another work in progress that augurs well for the city's future is the six-laning of the 42 km Outer Ring Road likely to be completed by July, 2011 at a cost of nearly Rs.239 crore. Though the project was to be ready by February, incessant rains till late November in 2010 led to delays but the authorities are confident of completing the work by July. Once completed, the ORR will be able to handle greater volume of traffic and will serve the city's needs till 2030 as per estimates.
In view of the expansion and growth of the city and the increasing pressure on distribution of sites, the MUDA has realised the impossibility of meeting the demands of 1.42 lakh site aspirants and has decided to opt for cluster houses in which nearly 10,000 houses will be built in a phase-wise manner. This underlines a shift in MUDA's policy of encouraging group housing in lieu of distribution of sites to cater to the future demands.

engineer.akash March 23rd, 2011, 04:10 PM Sigh of relief for pedestrians
MYSORE: If everything goes according to plans, pedestrians can heave a sigh of relief. The civic authorities are planning to relocate the vendors from footpaths of Krishna Vilas Road and Ashoka Road. The civic body has identified alternative places near Kalamandira and off Valmiki Road.
Mayor Sandesh Swamy told TOI that the footpath vendors will be rehabilitated by providing them facilities like food zones/courts on the lines of Hyderabad. "The Supreme Court has issued a directive that footpath vendors should be rehabilitated and they should be given alternative places before relocating or vacating them and hence we are conducting a survey to know their number and business type in the city," Swamy said. "If possible, we will accommodate some of them in markets. We will allocate funds in the budget for the project aimed at ensuring safety of pedestrians. It is heartening to know that score of pedestrians are killed in road accidents every year. I will discuss the issue in the council and try to find a solution."
Meanwhile, city police chief Sunil Agarwal admitted that the situation is alarming, particularly in the central business district. Providing adequate space for pedestrians should be a priority and on this score, city police are always ready to provide assistance to civic body to remove encroachments.
Where pedestrians are disregarded in CBD
Krishna Vilas and Ashoka road: Chaat vendors occupy the footpath space during peak hours in evenings.
Sri Harsha; Narayan Shastry and Dhavanthri Road: Vehicles are parked on pedestrians space till late evening.
JLB, Mysore-Nilgiri; Ramavilas; Irwin; Ashoka and Vinobha road: Tough to walk on these stretches due to uneven surface.
This apart, footpath area is gobbled up by shopkeepers and vendors in almost every stretch in the central business district.

engineer.akash March 25th, 2011, 01:47 PM CITY INDUSTRIALIST MOHAN RAO MEETS LEGENDARY INVESTOR WARREN BUFFETT
http://www.starofmysore.com/image.asp?slno=27849&type=news
"Where is Mysore?", asks the legend. 'Luck follows Talent'
Mysore, Mar. 25-City industrialist C.K. Mohan Rao, owner of PAMS Engineering in Hootagalli which manufactures high precision components for automobile, auto ancillary & computer peripherals for leading manufacturers in India and Japan, met Legendary US investor Warren Buffett, in Bangalore on Wednesday.
Warren Buffett was at Bangalore-based tool maker TaeguTec India as part of his visit to India, where he interacted with some of the important associates of the company. TaeguTec India's parent company I-M-C is controlled by Berkshire Hathaway of which Buffett is the Chairman and CEO. The company specialises in tungsten carbide cutting tools, tungsten carbide rolls and industrial products.
Mohan Rao was one among the invitees to TaeguTec India factory at Bommasandra in Bangalore. When Mohan Rao was introduced he said that he was from Mysore. Buffett asked: "Where is Mysore?" Mohan Rao had to explain it to the visiting dignitary.
Later, Mohan Rao accompanied Buffett on his TaeguTec factory tour and commissioning of the Sintering Furnace.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Mohan Rao said, "It was a great experience to be standing beside 'The Oracle of Omaha' (as he lives in Omaha, USA and predicts about investments) and be present during the interaction with the close associates of TaeguTec India.
These are some of the opinions and ideas expressed by Buffett during the interaction:
1. There will be a tidal wave of growth in India.
2. There is a disparity in income and a huge inequality in China, India and USA too.
3. An Indian by name Ajit Jain has been with him for the last 25 years and is perhaps his successor though not yet anointed.
Buffett had asked Ajit's parents that if they had one more son like Ajit, then "Please send him to me to the US." He also said that Ajit Jain has made more billions for Berkshire Hathaway than himself.
4. He stated that his heroes in life were his father and first wife Susan.
5. He wished that he had met Infosys Chief 20 years earlier but quickly added "Never look back and don't worry. All you can change is the future. Doing something intelligent once a year is good enough and I do not worry about the missed ones."
6. When asked about the challenges in mobilising potential, Buffett said, 'Parents face it all the time.' His father had told him that potential is limitless. The Government should be an agent for opening up the potential for human beings.
His own experience in identifying the incredible talent in Ajit Jain, which he recognised in a few minutes of talk, has now contributed billions since then to Berkshire Hathway.
7. When Buffett was asked what percentage he attributed to 'luck,' he said he was born in 1930 — when the great depression had ended — and prefers to have talent than to be born rich. "About 99 per cent of all the wealth I have is surplus, hence I want to give it away to philanthropy," says Buffett.
He also quoted that one must have fun in the journey of life and bring passion into it.
Warren Edward Buffett, born in August 30, 1930, is an American investor, industrialist and philanthropist. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful investors in the world. Often called the 'Legendary investor,' Buffett is the primary shareholder, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. He was ranked as the world's wealthiest person in 2008 and is the third wealthiest person in the world as of 2011.
Buffett is called the "Oracle of Omaha" or "Sage of Omaha." Buffett is also a notable philanthropist, having pledged to give away his fortune to philanthropic causes, primarily via the Gates Foundation.

CruiseBay is India’s first and only cruises — the only holiday company — launched in December 2008. The main reasons for the low number of people taking a cruise are lack of awareness about cruise holiday options, limited advertising by cruise companies and perception that cruising is expensive. CruiseBay has a growing network of partners who exclusively represent CruiseBay in their respective city. Each CruiseBay partner has created a CruiseBay Lounge which is a dedicated section in the CruiseBay partner’s travel agency premises where clients can plan their cruise holiday. At the lounge, clients can view DVDs and CDs of various cruise ships to better understand the facilities and amenities offered by them and can also use the internet facility provided to browse cruise information online. CruiseBay has appointed "Great Expeditions" as its city partner for Mysore. The CruiseBay lounge in Mysore is fifth in India after Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore & Chennai. s.yogendra March 26th, 2011, 08:46 PM Four cheetahs arrive at Mysore Zoo from Germany
DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/149123/four-cheetahs-arrive-mysore-zoo.html)
The Mysore Zoo has four new inmates in the form of South African hunting cheetahs. The big cats, two males and two females, arrived at the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens on Saturday, as part of an exchange programme with the Leipzig Zoo in Germany.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6609/cheetaht.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/i/cheetaht.jpg/)
The animals were transported in a Singapore Airlines aircraft from Johannesburg to Singapore and from there to Chennai. They were brought to Mysore by road, the zoo authorities said. K B Markandaiah, executive director, and Vijaykumar, deputy director of the Mysore Zoo, received the cheetahs, all aged over four years.
They will be kept in separate enclosures for one or two weeks before being displayed to the public, he said.
Markandaiah said the Mysore Zoo was housing the cheetahs after a gap of 28 years. In 1982, the Metro Toronto Zoo, Canada, had lent a pair of hunting cheetahs to the zoo.
He said the zoo would be able to take good care of the new cheetahs with the available infrastructure and expertise. An exclusive quarantine area has been created to initially acclimatise the animals to the local environment and help reduce stress and disturbance.
Experienced keepers will monitor them round the clock, and after studying their needs, they would be housed permanently in a spacious new enclosure which would be built in the existing zebra enclosure, Markandaiah said.
He said cheetahs, the fastest land animals, were once abundant in India but became extinct in the early 20th century due to excess human pressure. Mysore Zoo plans to create a world-class facility for these rare and endangered guests. The exhibit would feature large wilderness-like open spaces and an exclusive sprinting area for routine exercising.
The exhibit would also aim at educating people about the importance of these animals in the ecosystem.
rsrikanth05 March 27th, 2011, 07:13 AM Lovely. Another trip to Mysore Zoo due now.. YAY!!!
s.yogendra March 27th, 2011, 08:30 AM Facts about the cheetahs
cheetah can sprint up to 120 km per hour, with a stride of 7 to 8 metres. Built for speed, it has a deep chest, special pads on its feet for traction, and a long tail for balance. It is also the only cat that cannot retract its claws, an adaptation to help maintain traction, like soccer players' cleats. Drastic reduction in the cheetah population has led to excessive inbreeding, thus resulting in a population with extremely low level of genetic diversity, a press release issued by the zoo said.

engineer.akash March 27th, 2011, 12:53 PM DEVELOPMENT WORKS IN CITY: MAYOR TO LEAD DELEGATION TO CM
Squarely blames District In-charge Minister
Mysore, Mar. 27 (KCU&AB)- Mayor Sandesh Swamy has announced that he would lead an all-party delegation to the Chief Minister to apprise him of the deplorable conditions in city if District In-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas failed to convene a meet-ing of officers concerned and peo-ple's representatives within 15 days and launch the much-needed development programmes.
Addressing a press meet at his office here last evening, Sandesh Swamy said: "The Chief Minister is ready to offer crores of rupees for overall development of city. However, District Minister Ramdas is nonchalant about development for reasons best known to him."
"During 2008-09, the government had earmarked Rs. 100 crore for developments in city in the first phase. Out of that, Rs. 70 crore has been released. The balance amount and further funds have not been released holding up many development works. Ramdas is surprisingly complacent though fully aware of the situation," he accused.
Continuing, Sandesh Swamy said: "A proposal had been placed before Ramdas on Aug. 13, 2010 to get the second instalment of funds released by the government for 2011-12. The Deputy Commissioner himself has inspected the development works in city which are held up for want of grant. Though the DC has brought it to the notice of Ramdas, the latter has not convened a meeting to discuss the issue. Rs. 12.1 crore has been sanctioned to Chamaraja constituency under the SFC Special Grant for 2010-11, a huge amount for a single constituency which appears to be a politically biased decision," pointed out Sandesh Swamy regretting that he was being sidelined in meetings convened by Ramdas.

Speaking on the occasion, CruiseBay Founder Nikhil Rathore Das said that this was the fifth of its kind in the country after Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
"Cruising is a great holiday experience. Travellers can sail across the seven seas (and some rivers too) on a cruise designed to suit every budget. The main reasons for less number of people taking a cruise are lack of awareness about cruise holiday options, limited advertising by cruise companies and perception that cruising is expensive," he said.
"The percentage of those Indian outbound travellers who opt for a cruise as part of their holiday is very low (12 million outbound travelers, of which only around 75,000 people took a cruise in 2010 — less than 1 per cent)," he added.
"CruiseBay is India's first cruises-only holiday company launched in December 2008. We have professionally trained cruise consultants who provide expert knowledge, cruise liner and cruise destination information to clients," said Rathore.
"CruiseBay has a network of partners. s.yogendra March 28th, 2011, 08:36 AM Regional Tourism Authority yet to be constituted
hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/03/28/stories/2011032853600500.htm)
Imperative:The constitution of the Regional Tourism Authority in Mysore is reckoned to boost tourism traffic in the district as well as surrounding places such as Srirangapatna.
MYSORE: The Regional Tourism Authority mooted to give a thrust to the sector in Mysore is yet to see the light of day, though it has been in the pipeline for the last two years.
Mysore district in-charge Minister S.A. Ramdas had mooted the idea and assured its constitution “in due course”. But even after two years, there is no clarity about the body; its composition and organisational structure; or its place in the government machinery.
The constitution of the authority is reckoned to be imperative as Mysore has reached a new milestone in the tourism sector. The city had received more than three million tourists between January and December 2010.
Stakeholders have pointed out that the city has never had it so good. But for the boom to sustain a positive intervention by way of liberal policies in reducing or abolishing the entry tax on vehicles from neighbouring States; tax holiday to promote new hotels to meet the increase in demand; and development and promotion of new destinations, were important. This required a single window agency with powers to conceive and implement the larger objectives of tourism promotion. Hence the RTA was a must.
K.S. Nagapathi, director, Mahajana's Tourism Development Institute, who is among those striving for establishment of the RTA told The Hindu that establishing the authority could facilitate integrated development of tourism, not only in Mysore but the entire south Karnataka region.
He said Mysore in tourism parlance included the neighbouring Srirangapatna and also Bandipur, Nagarahole, BRT Sanctuary, Nanjangud and Somnathpur.
With the constitution of the authority, Mysore could be converted as a base to explore a wider area. He said that the authoritpy should include the tourism activities of five districts of this region: Mysore, Coorg, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan. It should be headed by a senior IAS officer of the rank of the Regional Commissioner. Prof. Nagapathi also mooted adequate budgetary allocation to the authority and suggested that a portion of the income generated from tourism could be utilised for development and maintenance of important places.
Prof. Nagapathi pointed out that returns for investment was very high in the tourism sector and the second largest industry in income generation.
He rued that the Government of India was allocating only 0.4 per cent of the GDP for tourism development while China was spending 3.8 per cent of its GDP and Thailand was investing 12 per cent.
jayaveera March 28th, 2011, 12:19 PM MYSORE: The clock strikes to hint it's four in the evening, the lazy afternoon sets to roll towards dusk, and the soundless ground slowly begins to liven up. And in less than an hours time, the quite place turns into a noisy royal adda, as the cricket frenzy boys vroom into their favorite hotspot, one behind the other.
The huge ground of the Royal School behind the Mysore Medical College campus is a favorite hang-out among a bunch of young boys in the city. They have been frequenting the spot since seven years for the ground is just right for them to play cricket. "We have been coming here since our school days," say students of St Philomenas College Shahul Ustad and Kashif. "And the place gradually became our adda, where we now come over daily, to play and practice cricket."
They are a bunch of about 20 boys from different colleges across city, who has turned out to become friends, meeting each other at the spot and it means nothing but a fun-filled spot for them. "It's during late afternoons when we will have nothing else to do that we turn up at the spot to play cricket and we will not even know how the sun sets, as we begin to play," say Mohammed Umair and Mohammed Azam, as they feel, their adda, apart from being a perfect cricket ground, also forms a beautiful place to relax and chit chat.
After playing the game, they relax under the tree there and discuss the game strategies. Farhan, a student of the National Institute of Engineering adds: "As we sit down to chit chat, we will get 'chai' for ourselves from the nearby tea stall and spend hours before the day falls." What's more, now that the World Cup-2011 is on, the cricket frenzy boys are enjoying their time at the adda the most. "Our adda is all about cricket. Hence, whenever there is a series going on, we too form teams among ourselves, identify them by the names of the countries playing and hold a match on the respective days, which is great fun," says Ustad.
So, this Wednesday, it is going to be an electrifying clash between team India and team Pakistan at the Royal adda.

The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has announced ambitious plans to develop the city in a planned manner which includes development of lakes and gardens. This is in addition to its long-term plans of developing four new residential areas that entails distribution of nearly 10,000 sites. The proposal is pending before the State Government. .
However, its thrust on greening Mysore deserves more focus in view of the growing urbanisation and the horizontal expansion of the city that threatens to reduce Mysore's green cover significantly.
However, the Karanji Nature Park developed by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) has been a major success and the lake, which was a cesspool of polluted water, is now a jewel in the crown of Mysore.
Another work in progress is the six-lane coming up on the 42 km Outer Ring Road likely to be completed by July, 2011 at a cost of nearly Rs.239 crore. Though the project was to be ready by February, incessant rains till late November 2010 led to delays but authorities are confident about completing the work by July this year.

TOI (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mysore/1200-mails-exchanged-to-bring-home-cheetahs/articleshow/7801410.cms)
MYSORE: Visitors from south India may have the chance of witnessing cheetahs in captivity in the 118-year old Sri Chamarajendra Zoologoical Gardens here, but they are oblivious of the untiring efforts made by the authorities to procure these majestic animals. But for the existence of the e-mail system, it would not have been possible for the authorities to get these endangered species in a short span of one and a half year.
Mysore zoo authorities exchanged more than 1,200 e-mails with various agencies and government organizations before they got the four cheetahs from Johannesburg. With the arrival of these four cheetahs, Mysore Zoo has become the only zoo in south India and second in India after Junagad zoo in Gujarat to have cheetahs as exhibits.
The idea to import cheetahs took off a year-and-a-half ago when Mysore zoo authorities wrote to Central Zoo Authority(CZA) seeking its permission to import cheetahs from an African safari. But since the proposal did not go down well with the CZA for various reasons, the issue was referred to Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), after six months. It took another six months for the zoo authorities to get clearance from DGFT. After clearing the file, the DGFT referred the matter to deputy director of wild life in the DGFT to check various issues related to animals' import and quarantine measures taken by the concerned in importing these wild animals.
Ultimately it was three months ago that the proposal to acquire cheetahs was accepted by the Union government after the files related to it succeeded in getting clearance from the ministry of environment, ministry of agriculture and ministry of commerce .
Zoo authorities, who relentlessly tried to get these animals, disclosed that once the government clearance came through, problems on their transportation cropped up. Actually Thai airlines was authorized to airlift these animals, but international authorities controlling the transfer of animals rejected the proposal due to lack of specified cargo crates (cages) for transporting them, an official who played a key role in getting these animals to the Mysore zoo said, adding that at last it was decided to transport animals by Singapore cargo airlines which airlifted the animals from Johannesburg to Mysore via Singapore, Hong Kong and Chennai .
This is the third time Mysore zoo is having cheetahs in its history of 118 years. First a pair of cheetahs was acquired under an exchange programme, but the animals died after a couple of months of their arrival. Later, a pair of cheetahs were acquired from Toronto zoo but they failed to breed and died. For 28 years, the zoo had no cheetahs. Now the Mysore zoo, which is known for captive breeding of big cats is optimistic of successfully breeding the cheetahs with all the four new arrivals being hale and healthy, in their prime age of breeding. Cheetahs, considered the fastest terrestrial animals, can sprint up to 120 km per hour and can stride 7 to 8 mts.

Creating three new pit lines at Belagola and developing it as a terminus to handle passenger trains will decongest Mysore railway station.
MYSORE: There is a proposal to decongest the Mysore railway station by developing Belagola as a second terminus.
While further expansion of the existing station is not possible due to non-availability of land, it is proposed to create new pit lines at Belagola station, about 8 km from the city.
Disclosing this, Anup Dayanand Sadhu, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, told The Hindu that creating three new pit lines at Belagola and developing it as a terminus to handle passenger trains would decongest the Mysore station.
Maintenance
More importantly, creating the new pit lines would enable the Mysore division to take up primary maintenance of long-distance trains. At present, eight trains have primary maintenance at the Mysore station and this takes about 8 hours per rake. In addition, there are a few trains which qualify for secondary maintenance and this takes about 2 hours per rake.
It was pointed out that one of the reasons why no new long-distance trains are being introduced from Mysore is limited capacity for primary maintenance of rakes. Once the capacity is augmented, then additional trains can be introduced, according to officials.
Mr. Sadhu said that Mysore station had three pit lines that were created over a period of time and the additional three pit lines at Belagola would augment its capacity for primary maintenance. In addition, some of the short-distance passenger trains originating from Mysore could be shifted to Belagola so as to release space to shunt important long-distance express trains at Mysore station.
He said the authorities were also toying with the idea of shunting a few trains at Ashokapuram or running some of the trains to Chamarajanagar.
Though these are still at the proposal stage, officials say it is inevitable once the track doubling work between Mysore and Bangalore is completed.
The track doubling work is slated to be completed by December 2013, though Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa has promised that the work would be completed by April 2012, if land acquisition in Mandya was expedited.
Once the work is completed, the number of trains on the section is expected to dramatically increase making it imperative to augment the handling capacity of Mysore railway station, according to Mr. Sadhu.

engineer.akash March 31st, 2011, 12:47 PM MUDA: RS. 13.4 CR SURPLUS BUDGET
Mysore, Mar. 31 (KMC&RK)- A surplus budget of Rs. 133.66 lakh was presented by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) today.
The budget proposals were presented by MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath at the meeting presided over by MUDA Chairman L. Nagendra.
During the coming fiscal, a total revenue of Rs. 41,084.95 lakh is expected to be earned from various sources and a plan outlay for expenditure is placed at Rs. 40,952.29 lakh.
Sources of revenue generation for the MUDA are: Rs. 134.07 lakh from the sale of 1,830 HUDCO houses, Rs. 21,103.66 lakh from new layouts, Rs. 9,468.16 from the sale of corner sites, Rs. 1,290 lakh from the auctioning of commercial complex sites, Rs. 204 lakh from the auctioning of individual houses, Rs. 6,000 lakh through development fees to be collected from the house owners and Rs. 2,443.08 lakh through house taxes and fixed deposits.
In the budget, it has been proposed to allocate Rs. 5,258.72 lakh for the comprehensive development of Mysore city. Rs. 3,242.60 lakh will be set aside for the construction of new residential layouts, Rs. 395 lakh for the development of parks, Rs. 77 lakh for securing MUDA assets, Rs. 50 lakh for documents maintenance (computer hardware etc.), Rs. 162 lakh for the development of lakes and Rs. 1,070.28 lakh for developing the villages adjacent to the city.
Dr. Betsurmath gave details about creation of Greater Mysore by including some neighbouring villages into Mysore City Corporation (MCC) jurisdiction.
Dr. Betsurmath said that a sum of Rs. 350 lakh will be reserved for the inclusion and its contract had been awarded to Sai Consultants of Ahmedabad.
The new layouts planned by the MUDA are: Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Nagar near Lin-gambudi lake, Swarna Jayanthi Nagar at Halaluchowdalli village, Lalithadripura 2nd Stage, Shanthaveri Gopalagowda Nagar 2nd Stage at Sarkari Utthanalli village, Lal Bahadur Shastri Nagar 2nd Stage at Yandalli and R.T. Nagar 2nd Stage at Kergalli.
MLC Marithibbegowda, speaking on the occasion, expressed regret that more than 40% of MUDA allocations made last year remained unspent, because of which development had suffered.
He suggested that the new layouts developed by MUDA be immediately transferred to MCC to avoid expenditure.
The MLC also urged MUDA to consider the construction of an international-level sports stadium for which at least 100 acres of land is acquired near the city.
MUDA members K.S. Raikar (who also is the MCC Commissioner), MLA Tanveer Sait, MLCs Chikkamadu, Thontadarya, Siddharaju, Prof. K.R. Mallikarjunappa and G. Madhusudan, MUDA Secretary Vidyakumari, Superintending Engineer Shivakumar, Executive Engineer Veerabhadraiah, Town Planning Member M.N. Kumar and others were present during the budget presentation.

MUDA announced 2,000 houses for the economically backward and SC and STs. The group housing scheme has been allocated Rs 15 crore.
The MUDA announced it will allot some 5,000 sites in two layouts it has developed during 2011-12. s.yogendra March 31st, 2011, 08:31 PM MUDA proposes six new layouts
DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/150434/muda-proposes-six-layouts.html)
To meet the requirement for the growing demand for sites, the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has proposed to develop six new layouts. The Authority has submitted four plans to the government in this regard.
http://www.deccanherald.com/images/editor_images1/2011/03/31/muda.jpg
The proposal for developing six more layouts was among the highlights at the annual budget of the MUDA tabled here on Thursday. MUDA Commissioner Dr C G Betsurmath, who presented the annual receipts and expenditure said the Authority projected a total revenue of ` 410.85 crore from different sources and the expenditure is pegged at ` 409.52 crore with a surplus of ` 1.33 crore. It will spend ` 96 crore for the acquisition of land for new layouts and clearing pending compensation.
In the run up to the allotment of the sites in R T Nagar and Lalithadri Nagar I stage, MUDA will spend about ` 32.42 crore towards improvement of basic infrastructure in these layouts.

MCC will give Rs 55 lac for KRH dialysis unit
DHNS
Mysore City Corporation (MCC) council on Thursday decided to sanction ` 55 lakh to purchase equipment for dialysis unit at K R Hospital.
The civic body arrived at the consensus without giving room for much debate, taking into note the travails faced by the people, mostly from rural parts who knock on the doors of the good old hospital for this particular facility.
Moreover, as it was the end of the financial year, the council thought it appropriate to give its consent rather than stretching the same.
However, senior Corporator H N Srikantaiah was miffed at the delay on the part of the officers concerned in the corporation for unwanted delay in releasing the money for a noble work.
He strongly urged the Mayor Sandesh Swamy to hold such officers accountable.
Following this, Superintending Engineer of MCC, Mahesh replied that the tenders had been invited to purchase the needy materials, long ago on August 27, 2010.
As the corporation lacked experts, a five member panel had been formed to submit the report pertaining to the facilities. However, there was a delay of two months to submit the report, the actual reasons that stymied the process.
It was only after all these stages, the approval was taken from the authorities concerned.
On the earlier decided insurance cover for BPL families and those whose annual income is below ` 17,000, the council vested the powers to decide on the list of beneficiaries to the corporators, rather than the officers only. As Mayoral polls is scheduled for April, it was also the last council meeting of the incumbent mayor. Corporators cutting across party lines felicitated Mayor on the occasion

hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/01/stories/2011040160930300.htm)
Mysore: A.H. Vishwanath, MP, has urged Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to announce projects to develop the city, including a circular railway to ease traffic congestion.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Vishwanath said Mr. Yeddyurappa should devote at least three hours during his visit here on April 19 to chair a review meeting, to announce such Mysore-specific proposals.
Letter
He would write to the Chief Minister in this regard. He urged the Chief Minister to invite representatives of all political parties to discuss the development of the city. The MP said he would write to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee as well on introducing the circular railway.
Land needed
The Railways was ready to implement the project provided the State Government gave land for the purpose, he said.
Transport management was key to a city's industrial success, he said and mooted the constitution of an expert committee to suggest ways to bring the rail facility to Mysore.
s.yogendra April 1st, 2011, 06:28 PM Mysore civic body to revise rents
BS (http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/mysore-civic-body-to-revise-rents/430529/)
The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) proposes to mop up additional revenues by tripling the fine imposed on unauthorised trade and by revising the rent of the premises it has let out in municipal buildings in Mysore City during 2011-12.
It anticipates that the three-time penalty would yield an additional Rs 3 crore, taking the civic body’s revenues to Rs 5 crore and the revision of municipal building rent would fetch revenues of Rs 4.10 crore.
During the last three quarter-ending December last, the MCC generated around 50 per cent of the anticipated revenues of Rs 242.90 crore for the year. The revenues during the nine months-ending December 2010 was Rs 129.23 crore, and in the remaining quarter of this year, it hopes to mobilise an additional Rs 85.24 crore to take its total revenue to an ambitious Rs 214.47 crore for the year.
Poor revenue generation has reflected on expenditure too. It stood at Rs 127.29 crore till December-end, which is less than 50 per cent of the budgeted expenditure of Rs 253.45 crore for 2010-11. Anticipating more revenue generation during the remaining three months of the financial year, the MCC has proposed a total expenditure of Rs 229.73 crore for the year.
The Rs 3.03 crore surplus budget for 2011-12, showing an anticipated revenue of Rs 426.96 crore, including last year’s surplus of Rs 7.73 crore, and an expenditure of Rs 423.92 crore, was presented at the MCC meeting on Tuesday by Finance and Taxation Committee Chairman Shivakumar.
The budget claimed that MCC had spent Rs 66 crore of the Rs 100 crore chief minister’s special grants for Mys-ore on time and of the 138 works taken up, 123 were completed. However, it gave no details.
It also failed to mention anything about the centrally-funded Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Reconstruction Mission (JNNURM) schemes’ grants received or spent. There was a lone statement that Rs 10 crore was earmarked for 2011-12 as MCC’s contribution to the JNNURM schemes, leaving one to wonder about JNNURM implementation in Mysore, which has taken a controversial turn.
During the coming year, it is proposed to undertake web-based monitoring of works implemented under the different heads to monitor and bring about transparency in them by monitoring their progress and the payments made. This would ensure the internal financial discipline in the MCC, Shivakumar observed.
Other major proposals comprise of multi-vehicle parking facility near the zoo and Mofussil Bus Stand, waste management at nine places, greening of Mysore by planting trees in association with the Forest Department, developing public parks (Rs 4.5 crore), earmarking zones for footpath vendors, creation of pet animal park, developing the Dufferin Clock Tower Square as a social gathering place (Rs 29 lakh), development of Devanur Tank (Rs 3 crore), road management and insurance for three years by contractors.
Provision of Rs 8 crore for backward classes and minorities and Rs 13.20 crore for SC-ST welfare covers Rs 25 lakh contribution for Dr Ambedkar Bhavan and Rs 30 lakh for Valmiki Bhavan.

MYSORE: After two years and two deadlines, the work on the first phase of the proposed Vijayanagar Sports Complex at Vijayanagar Ist stage is far from over.
The Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) had proposed to build the complex to promote sports and recreational activities. When the work commenced in October 2008, the deadline for completion was September 2009. But it was later postponed to June 2010.
The first phase includes construction of two lawn tennis courts, two basket ball courts, two badminton courts and a playground. The projected cost of the complex to be built on 11.39 acres is Rs 3 crore. The second phase will include swimming pool, indoor stadium, refreshment centre and spectators' gallery at Rs 14.5 crore.
The proposed sports complex will benefit people in Gokulam, Vijayanagar, Hebbal, Kuvempunagar, Jayalakshmipuram, Vontikkopal, Vinayakanagar and Dattagalli.
MUDA commissioner CJ Betsurmutt said: "I will review the project and take suitable action and steps to complete the work."

DHNS (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/150722/krs-road-re-open-may.html)
The KRS Road between Dasappa Circle and Yadavagiri Circle in the city is likely to be re-opened for traffic by middle of May, 2011.
In a press release here, Dr Anup Dayanand Sadhu, senior divisional commercial manager, South Western Railway, Mysore Division, has said the work of widening of KRS Bridge as well as increasing the width of the road was taken up by Railways in coordination with Public Works Department (PWD) and Mysore City Corporation (MCC) from June 1, 2010, with a targeted completion of 9 months (Till February, 2011).
However, due to temporary suspension of work during Dasara, the work could not be completed as scheduled by February 2011.
The work of Railway Bridge has since been completed and the left over work relating to underground drainage as well as retention wall are being done by PWD and the work is in full swing.
He said a review was done two days ago by Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta along with the commissioner of MCC and divisional railway manager, to assess the progress of work.
The representatives of PWD as well as MCC were present. After the inspection of the left over work, the DC instructed the PWD and MCC officials to complete the road work latest by middle of May 2011 so that the road becomes available to public before the onset of monsoon.

A circular railway constructed by Indian railways? Please, noooo!!!
I think they should opt for monorail instead. Not sure about Metro. They could implement tramways near historic sites and roads.
Akashji, your thoughts on a mass rapid transit system for Mysore?

Hi! Gautam :)
I agree with your views.Circular railway does not work well with the kind of city configuration Mysore has.Mysore growth is modeled best with the hub spoke concept. There are many radial roads emanating from the city center to cater for traffic from subrubs to the city center.
Mysore must go for BRTS - state govt has planned for it in the cities of HUbli-Dharwad and Mysore.
Mysore has excellent network of parallel roads it would be prudent for mysore to go ahead with BRTS.
Mysore has a ring road and a 6 lane outer ring road 42 km coming up - Updates can be had here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1255733&page=3),BRTS is being planned along the outer ring road.
I am happy that unprofessional organisation like IR has less footprint in Mysore
Coming to monorail I don't find any merit either coz it would only mar the heritage beauty of Mysore, very few cities in India remain unscathed by the so called ugly urbanisation.I am happy Mysore is one among them at present.Future who knows?? Bangalore once was in that list now :ohno:
s.yogendra April 2nd, 2011, 10:45 AM KSRTC to organise Bus Day on April 9
hindu (http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/02/stories/2011040256770500.htm)
Mysore: In a bid to make the public transport system popular among citizens, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) plans to organise “Bus Day” in the city on April 9.
The frequency of bus trips to four select locations from the city bus-stand will be increased on that day to assess the route potential. KSRTC Divisional Controller (Urban) M.N. Srinivas told The Hindu on Friday that buses to all these four destinations originate from the city bus-stand and it would touch L&T via Infosys, KRS, J.P. Nagar and Kuvempunagar. A bus would be run in every five minutes to these areas to assess the real potential of the areas in terms of people using the bus. The same experiment would be repeated in succeeding months on select routes, he said.
The KSRTC move is expected to benefit the commuters in many ways. Firstly, it would dissuade people to use less two wheelers, autorickshaws and cars. Secondly, road accidents involving two-wheelers could easily be avoided, Mr. Srinivas pointed out. It is also expected to bring down pollution levels as there will be few private vehicles on the road.
The KSRTC wants to drive home the fact that travelling in public transport is not only safer but also cheaper, Mr. Srinivas said.
Though the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation has been organising “Bus Days” for the past one year, it is being tried out in Mysore for the first time. The Mercedes-Benz bus service introduced as city service on an experimental basis has received good response,
Mr. Srinivas said. The bus is plying from the city bus stand to L&T via Infosys. Ticket is priced at Rs. 20. Transport Minister R. Ashok will inaugurate a new bus-stand at Kuvempunagar on April 9.
The next day, Mr. Ashok would inaugurate a new bus stand at Yelwal.

engineer.akash April 2nd, 2011, 08:43 PM Princess road to be reopened soon
MYSORE: Come May 15, a section of Krishnarajasagar road ( Princes road), which was closed for development work, will be reopened much to the relief of tourists visiting Brindavan Gardens.
Deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta, who reviewed the progress of the project, has directed the officials of Mysore City Corporation and public works department to complete the work by mid-May. Traffic on the busy Prince Road was diverted since June last year to facilitate widening of a railway bridge and a road. Though the deadline for the project work was February 2011, it was delayed due to technical glitches. Due to closure of the main road, vehicle users were to make a detour.
South Western Railway DRM (Sr) Anup Dayanand Sadhu attributed the delay to suspension of work during Dasara celebrations. However, now the railway bridge extension work is complete and the remaining UGD and road work is being carried out in full swing.
Meanwhile, members of Mysore Grahakara Parishat, a citizens forum, are skeptical of the officials meeting the deadline. In a release, R Chandra Prakash and Bhamy V Shenoy of MGP said the road has been shut for 10 months and only two meetings have been conducted by the deputy commissioner on this score. "It seems the officials are casual about it," they said.

Plans being prepared to develop existing 22-acre garden on palace premises
‘Plan is to develop the garden from the Jayamarthanda Gate to the palace foreground'
‘Consultant has come up with plans for landscaping, garden design, layout'
MYSORE: Inspired by the famed Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mysore too may boast a majestic garden on the same lines by the time Dasara comes.
Plans are being drawn up to develop the 22-acre garden on the premises of the iconic Mysore palace.
The authorities plan to refurbish it with greener lawns and a variety of plants — ornamental and flowering.
Work on designing the layout and landscaping is likely to begin soon, as the Mysore Palace Board, the caretaker of the palace, has appointed a consultant.
DC's idea
Disclosing this to The Hindu, deputy director of the board P.V. Awaradi said that Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta, who is the executive officer of the board, had proposed developing the garden in line with the majestic architecture of the palace. “There is a lot of scope for developing the unused space on the palace premises. The existing lawn can be beautified and the lawn can be made attractive,” he said.
Mr. Awaradi said the consultant had come up with plans for landscaping, garden design and layout.
“We are looking at various designs and layouts that can suitably replace the existing garden. Fountains and other attractions are also included in the plan,” he informed.
Which grass?
The existing lawn was developed using country grass. There is a plan to replace it with either Bermuda grass or Mexican grass (commonly known as Korean grass) to make the lawn greener.
“We have not decided whether to go for planting method or seeding method for the new lawn. This will be decided once the garden design is finalised,” he replied.
Approval awaited
Saying that the Deputy Commissioner's approval was being awaited for the designs, Mr. Awaradi said the total area of the palace premises was around 55 acres. The lawn could be developed on about 22 to 25 acres, although there was scope for developing the lawns outside the palace fort.
Elaborating on the garden plan, the deputy director said the plan was to develop the garden from the entrance of Jayamarthanda Gate to the palace foreground.
Rainwater harvesting
The palace board can afford to develop a bigger garden and lawn because the palace is becoming self-sufficient in addressing its water needs, thanks to rainwater harvesting.
Tanks
Seven tanks with a total capacity of over 6 lakh litres have been built on the premises.
The palace is gearing up to build a few more tanks with a capacity of nearly 4 lakh litres in the fourth phase of the project.

Ayurvedic Research Centre in Mysore soon
Gayathri V Raj,Mysore, Apr 10, DHNS:
With the 200-bedded Naturopathy Hospital and College slated to come up in the city opposite PKTB Sanitorium on KRS road, people who travelled to far off places to avail naturopathy treatment, can breathe easy.
Naturopathy mode of treatment is quite popular and people don’t mind shelling out huge sums of money to access nature cure treatment, irrespective of whether it is at a private clinic, or at any swanky place even if it is in some other corner of the state.
Playing host to this state-of-the-art Ayurvedic Research Centre, Mysore can claim to have first such centre in the state. The centre would take up wide research in the field of Ayurveda.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dr G N Srikantaiah, IFS, who is the Director, Department of Ayurveda Yoga Unani Sidda and Herbal medicine (AYUSH), said that Yoga and naturopathy are drugless therapies and more and more people though interested in taking up these treatments are always misguided saying it as there are no evidences for these therapies.
The Research Centre is being set up in the city with expert scientists involving themselves in research works for the benefit of the people and would certainly put an end to such opinions, he said.
100-bedded hospital
A 100-bedded Panchakarma hospital, the construction of which is underway would be completed in a year and would be dedicated to the people.
The ground floor is complete and the work is on for the first floor.
Panchakarma treatments are said to be a perfect cure for the neurological disorders, joints pain, arthritis, spondylitis and such other ailments.
More and more people who have tried a variety of other treatments have found solace in Panchakarma treatment which tries to find the root cause of the disease and begin the treatment.
Project estimate
The total project is estimated to be around ` 40 crore. The State Government has been funding the project and the authorities have even approached the Centre for more funds, says Srikantaiah. MLA S A Ramdas would lay the foundation stone for the Naturopathy Hospital and College and Ayruvedic Research Centre on April 13, according to sources.

s.yogendra April 12th, 2011, 08:49 PM Govt Ayurvedic Hospital sets for a facelift
Gayathri V Raj, Mysore, Apr 12, DHNS: (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/153198/govt-ayurvedic-hospital-sets-facelift.html)
Procures new X-ray machine; renovation at a cost of ` 1.5 crore
The Government Ayurvedic Hospital and College in Mysore, which held its centenary celebrations year ago, is all set to get a facelift.
The patients who were regularly put into inconvenience due to defunct x-ray machine and other equipment can now breathe easy as the hospital has got a new X-ray machine, which would be installed shortly.
Earlier, the patients who were advised for an x-ray by the doctors here to assess the ailment to decide on the course of treatment were put into inconvenience as the 27-year-old x-ray machine was continuously under repair and had gone defunct lately.
They had no other option but to spend hundreds of rupees at private laboratories and x-ray centres.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dr Aruna, Principal of Ayurveda College said that the institution which began its degree courses from 1967-68 has produced hundreds of ayurvedic experts, who have been practicing successfully and also creating awareness on the importance of Ayurveda therapy.
Additional facilities
Moreover, the hospital and the college is being spruced up on par with the state-of-the-art hospitals and is being renovated approximately at a cost of ` 1.5 crore.
Additional facilities are being added for the benefit of the patients, who come from not only Mysore city but also from the surrounding areas, she said.
There were complaints that there were shortage of medicines earlier and now, steps have been taken to see that the medicines being supplied from Bangalore is abundant and there are no such complaints. The current 150-bedded hospital would also be renovated and given a new look.
The existing pharmacy would be upgraded to a two-storeyed one and the college would also have a new PG block for the post graduate candidates.
Plans are on to construct a additional floor for the boys hostel, to accommodate more students in future. Apart from this, regular training under NRHM scheme and Continuing Medical Education programme is also being conducted, Aruna stated.
It may be recalled that a new Ayurvedic Research Centre and 100-bedded Naturopathy College and Hospital is coming up on KRS road, opposite PKTB Sanatorium, for which the foundation stone is being laid by Medical Education Minister S A Ramadas on April 13. A 100-bedded panchakarma hospital is also under construction, which would be completed in a year.
It is certain that Ayurveda, which have hordes of people including hollywood stars lineating towards the therapy, is sure to add glitter to the heritage city.
s.yogendra April 12th, 2011, 08:51 PM KRS road
Commenting on the road repair work being undertaken on KRS Road, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysore Division, South Western Railway, B B Verma said that work had been completed by the railways. However, the pending work had to be completed by the Public Works Department and Mysore City Corporation. He said that if the work wasn’t completed by monsoon, it could become ‘death trap’.

engineer.akash April 13th, 2011, 08:16 PM Three more interceptors for city police
MYSORE: The traffic police on Wednesday added three more interceptor vehicles to the existing two.
The vehicles are fitted with advanced gadgets that can record road rule violations.
Police commissioner Sunil Agarwal said Mysore was the first city in south India to get an interceptor in 2007. It was given by the institute of traffic road education. Through that the police have booked some 47,000 violators and collected a total fine of Rs 1 crore in four years.
Later, the department got another in 2009. Except the Devaraja traffic station, the other five stations will now have the hi-tech vehicle. The commissioner said the interceptor helps check overspeeding, signal jumping and drunken driving.

Civillian April 14th, 2011, 03:18 PM Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate Infosys centre
Special Correspondent
Global Education Centre-2 will be used for foundation programmes
The architectural style of GEC-2 resembles that of the Parliament House
Infosys recruits will train here before they take up their respective postings
http://www.hindu.com/2009/09/12/images/2009091252180301.jpg
Stylish: The façade of the new GEC-2 building at Infosys’ Mysore campus.
MYSORE: The second unit of the Global Education Centre (GEC), established by Infosys Technologies Ltd. at its Mysore campus, will be inaugurated by the All India Congress Committee President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on September 15.
The GEC-2 is an amazing architectural endeavour and Infosys employees will train here before they take up their respective postings. Designed by architect Hafiz Contractor, GEC-2 is the latest addition to a slew of facilities being created at the Infosys campus which is spread over 335 acres of land in the city. This facility would take the total investment of Infosys in Mysore to over Rs. 1,700 crore.
The GEC-1 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February 2005. The objective of the GEC is to educate the employees on technological and managerial skills with the rationale of creating cohesive multicultural teams.
The GEC imparts a centralised residential foundation programme, including generic and stream-specific training in various technology areas, apart from soft skills and leadership programmes to fresh engineering graduates who have joined Infosys. The GEC is also used to train its employees in continuing education in technology and management skills.
With the completion of the GEC-2, Infosys can train up to nearly 13,500 employees in a single sitting, making it the largest corporate training facility in the world. The architectural style of the GEC is reflective of the Colosseum and the Parliament. A large dome is the pivot that connects the entire structure.
With a built up area of 10,02,000 sq.ft. GEC-2 has seven blocks with eighty four 100-seaters, three 200-seaters, six 60-seaters classrooms and five examination halls and 301 faculty rooms. It also has an induction hall which can seat 300 trainees, a state of the art library which can accommodate 60,000 books.
The new building also has a food court in the basement area with a seating capacity of more than 1,700, with six kiosks. More than 9,500 people can be trained at any given point of time there.
Infosys launched its Mysore centre with a makeshift office at SJ College of Engineering in March 2000 but its new campus has emerged as a knowledge hub and houses, apart from GEC-I and II, the software development centre and the Infosys Leadership Institute.
The Mysore unit provides services to several Fortune 500 clients.
Proud to be a part of this great project...
Worked 2+ years for this GEC-2 project...:)

engineer.akash April 14th, 2011, 06:11 PM Q: Can you comment on your deal with IMAX? You have a very aggressive expansion plan of about 60 new screens in FY12 versus 19 in the fiscal just gone by. Do you think there is enough demand to meet the kind of capacity expansion you are aiming?
A: Absolutely, we are basically moving into new markets Vijayawada, Udaipur. There are so many untapped cities as well where malls haven’t developed, multiplexes haven’t developed, therefore, each market is studied very well, each location is studied very well and there is huge demand in these places. We are aggressive and are opening in Bangalore in certain pockets where multiplexes are not there in Chennai, in Cochin, Mysore, so there is lot of cities where PVR still doesn’t have a presence or wants to further consolidate its presence.
On the IMAX part is just another format which doing exceedingly well internationally, about 21 films are coming this year so we thought we could equip at least four of our locations with IMAX and that again differentiates you from another forms of watching movies.

engineer.akash April 16th, 2011, 12:19 PM India and Sri Lanka's best public speakers head to Mysore between 12 and 15 May 2011
April 16, 2011
(PRLEAP.COM) A convention for Toastmasters will be happening in Mysore this May that will be bringing together speakers from India and Sri Lanka to take part in speech contests to find the best from the regions, DirectRooms.com can report.
Ovation 2011 will feature over 700 members from the Toastmasters organisation which helps people with speaking in public and trains members on how to give effective presentations. The conference will feature the International Speech Contest where those taking part have to give a rousing speech on a prepared subject and the winner will go on to represent the region at the international convention later in the year.
The event this year will run from 12th to 15th May 2011 and is for the members of District 82 which features an approximate equal split of people from each country. Other attendees will be coming from Pakistan, America and Malaysia to talk at the event and as well as listening to the speeches there will be a number of education sessions to help delegates improve their technique.
Visitors planning on staying at Mysore hotels around the dates of the event may experience problems when they go to book due to the sheer number of people that are set to attend.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "With so many delegates and especially those visitors from Sri Lanka, accommodation will be in short supply. By booking early enough people can make significant savings before rates start to rise."

engineer.akash April 16th, 2011, 03:35 PM MINISTER DEPLORES JUSCO'S FAILURE TO PROVIDE 24X7 WATER SUPPLY
Rs. 48 lakh fine imposed on JUSCO
Mysore, Apr. 16 (KMC&KK)- A penalty of Rs. 48 lakh has been slapped on Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (JUSCO), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Steel, which is entrusted with the task of revamping the water supply system of Mysore city under the JNNURM project.
At a meeting held yesterday to discuss about the drinking water scarcity problem in city, Mysore City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner K.S. Raikar said the fine was imposed on the basis of reports from third party evaluators.
District In-Charge Minister S.A. Ramdas, who presided over the meeting, demanded information about the action taken by the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) after the JUSCO officials conceded to their lapses.
KUWSDB Executive Engineer S. Subbe Gowda said that JUSCO had been fined for "not attaining the target stipulated in the tri-partite agreement and falling back in its promise of supplying 24x7 potable water to the city." The next evaluation would be in June.
Gowda explained that a new pipeline had been laid for about 81 kms here and 26 overhead tanks had been constructed and commissioned under the project of remodelling the water distribution network in the city. He blamed JUSCO for not using the tanks for water distribution, citing various reasons.
A JUSCO official said his firm had agreed to provide 24x7 water supply to 40,000 connections by Jan. 2011. "Though 33,000 houses have been brought under the network, water is being distributed to only 13,000 houses," he said, adding that the lapse was due to shortage in volume of water.
MLA Tanveer Sait, who refused to accept the excuse, said that there was no shortage of water as 43 Million Gallons a Day were being supplied as against the city's requirement of 22 MGD.
Mayor Sandesh Swamy and MCC Opposition Leader Nandish Preetham too spoke on the same likes, highlighting the failure of JUSCO in keeping its promise and berating the officials in trying to mislead the elected representatives and the people by lying that there was shortage of water.
Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath too narrated her tale of woe, accusing the MCC officials of disregarding her pleas for water, to which the District In-Charge Minister took a strong exception, pointing out that if the plight of the Deputy Mayor was so bad, what would be the condition of the citizens? He cautioned the MCC officials of initiating severe action if they did not heed to elected representatives.

engineer.akash April 17th, 2011, 09:39 PM Mysore Palace gardens to get a makeover
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Mysore April 18, 2011, 0:26 IST
The famous Mysore Palace is set to get more attractive with an attractive garden spread over five acres being planned around it. In addition to that, there will also be screening of an animated documentary, and installation of automatic gates for tourists visiting to take in the beauty of the Indo-Saracenic structure.
The garden, to be modelled on the Moghul Gardens in Rashtrapathi Bhavan, will have rare plants, high-value trees, rare varieties of flower plants and a lawn on either side of the Jayamarthanda Gate, the main entrance to the palace.
Plans and designs have been received from horticultural experts and the tendering process will be taken up shortly, according to Mysore Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta.
The cost of the project will be Rs 1.65 crore.
It is also proposed to screen an animated documentary showcasing the beautiful interiors and the outside structure for the benefit of visitors. The 30-minute documentary will be screened inside the palace and entry will be by a separate ticket. It will be on the lines of the documentary exhibited in Bodh Gaya, produced by the Nalanda University, he said.
‘Ancient India’ enterprise will produce the documentary and it would not cost the State as the income from the ticket collect will be shared with this firm. It will be a 30-minute documentary which can be watched by 50-60 people simultaneously.
With a view to check unauthorised and ticketless entry at the Varaha Gate, from where tourists are allowed into the Palace premises on ticket now, the authorities have proposed to install automatic open-and-shut gates to operate on biometric system. After purchasing a token instead of ticket as at present, a visitor has to insert the card, when the gate will open automatically and shut soon after he enters inside.
Three such modernised entry gates will be installed and three persons can enter through gates simultaneously. Plans and designs for installing the gates were ready and tenders would be processed in a transparent way, Gupta said.
A similar arrangement is also being considered for vehicle parking outside the palace and the proposal was being discussed with experts, he added.

engineer.akash April 18th, 2011, 01:31 PM Carlson Extends Strategic Partnership to Grow Country Inns Suites by Carlson in India
MONDAY, 18 APRIL 2011 11:45
Carlson, a global hospitality and travel company is planning to grow the number of Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM in operation in India from the current 11 to more than 50 hotels over the next 10 years, with five hotels scheduled to open in 2011.
This growth will be managed through Country Development and Management Services Private Limited (CDMS), a joint venture between Carlson and Chanakya Hotels Private Limited that has successfully pioneered the brand in India over the last 10 years. Future developments will be based on the next generation of the brand which will include significant design nuances created specifically for the Indian market. These plans were announced in the presence of Hubert Joly, president and chief executive officer of Carlson, who was visiting India for the second time this year.
Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM is a mid-scale hotel brand that targets both business and leisure travelers. It has built a unique brand position that represents the essence of home through its residential design and its 'friends hosting friends' culture. The next generation of Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM will continue to build on these universal values of home. It will introduce modernity to the product and allow for greater cultural variances in the design details and the services it provides through the use of color, fabrics, material artifacts and the food and beverage concepts it will offer. Its efficient new design will further enhance its value-for-money proposition with guests and developers alike in the mid-scale segment. This new generation of Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM has been designed by the international, London based design company Virgile and Stone, part of the Imagination Group. The roll out of the brand will continue to follow the Carlson strategy for India, focusing on primary and secondary cities, and resorts in line with the country's developing economy, demographic changes, and travel and tourism growth.
The five new hotels scheduled to open in 2011 include the 37-room Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Delhi Satbari which opened last week, the 50-room Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Mussoorie which will open this month, the 190-room Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Gurgaon NH-8 and the 71-room Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Ajmer which will open in June, and the 130-room Country Inn & Suites By Carlson Mysore which will open in October. The first of the next generation of the brand is set to debut in 2012.
“The mid-scale market in India represents a significant opportunity and Carlson is pleased to be able to grow its Country Inns & Suites By CarlsonSM brand in this market through its strategic partnership in CDMS,” said K.B. Kachru, executive vice president, Carlson Hotels, South Asia.
“I am confident that the new version of the brand will be very attractive to both Indian travelers and developers,” said Ranjan Bhattacharya, managing director, Country Development and Management Services Private Limited.
“The brand’s rapid expansion aligns with Carlson’s Ambition 2015 growth strategy to have more than 100 hotels in operation in India by 2015,” said Simon C. Barlow, president, Carlson Hotels, Asia Pacific.

What is the status of KRS underpass/Bridge?By may end they must commission it.
Heard that Victor albert road is totally blocked and chamrajendra circle too has been raped in the name of Raja Marga. What do you all think about Raja Marga concept? Isn't it a waste, spending 18 cr for 4.5 KM road alone? They could have used the money for face lifting other important roads that are crying for attention for a while.
Dewans road made into news recently, can someone update what new features have been added?
Mall of Mysore status?
