Hey guys, i was thinking about the creating a picture serie about Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr area) - an urban conglomeration in western part of Germany. I ll try to keep this thread updated as much as possible, you ll not be able to see all pictures at once, so the first may not be the most attractive pictures from the city centres etc... I ll try rather to photograph smaller suburbs and so go on, to see all aspects of a city.
So, now i ll start with Essen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essen),

Nice pics, Stevan. Looking forward to more! :)

I found this picture interesting:

I've never seen streetlamps in right on the buildings here, but that probably has to be done in Europe because there's not much sidewalk room. I guess it's pretty smart, but I don't know if I like the look of it. But I guess it's better than lamps hanging on wires over the streets, like we have in Eastern Europe. Or not, I haven't decided yet.

I think the Ruhrpott looks very depressing on these photos. Like a rundown industrial area. What it actualy is.

It's not really that bad. There are also really beautiful places in Essen. The Ruhrgebiet was a depressing region but we don't live in these times anymore. The deindustrialisation is finally over and the Ruhrgebiet is once again booming. Accoording to "die Welt" the economic growth is the highest in Germany. I see a great future for this cities, which already has begun. For example it will be Europe's capital of culture 2010.

The problem is that Ruhr isn´t a great-million city to start with. Had it been one municipality/city with 6 million people and not 133 municipalities, then it would surley be a more interesting place.

It depends, i am living in Essen since 2001 and there are some dramatic differences between south and north of Essen - border is A40 highway.. I am trying to get some pics of southern Essen in following days, there s quite beautifull with old mansions, wood etc etc :)

Homeland of the SPD. Whole Germany would look as depressing as that if they were to rule in every state.

very nice pics!
u can see how real live looks in this city
not only the more beautiful buildings, but also normal things like modal income houses. in fact, such pics shows how a city is
compare with pics from a city like shanghai: hunderds of skyscrapers but the real atmosphere can u feel in the daily pics like normal houses

Interesting, does Dusseldorf count as part of the Ruhrgebeit? I've heard it is a pleasant and prosperous city.
