That mobile crane must be 40 stories tall!

stefr
August 28th, 2011, 06:05 AM
What worries me most is the cranes at the top. The wind will be about 20% to 30% stronger than at the ground level.

From National Hurricane Center:

MORE SO THAN WITH MOST STORMS...THE WINDS WITH IRENE INCREASE
SHARPLY WITH HEIGHT ABOVE THE SURFACE. AS IRENE MOVES THROUGH
AREAS WITH HIGH-RISE STRUCTURES...THESE BUILDINGS COULD EXPERIENCE
WINDS SIGNIFICANTLY STRONGER THAN THE SURFACE WINDS. WINDS AT THE
30-STORY LEVEL WILL LIKELY BE 20 PERCENT HIGHER THAN AT THE
SURFACE...AND WINDS 80-100 STORIES UP COULD BE ABOUT 30 PERCENT
HIGHER THAN AT THE SURFACE.

I hope there will not be too much damage and that the construction will resume quickly after the storm.

oilmanjr
August 28th, 2011, 06:15 AM
I just heard that glass windows will start to break out at around 85 mph winds. That means at windspeeds of 70 mph at ground level, windows could start to break 80 stories up.

Thanks Effer for posting those screenshots, but that pdf file has wrong data (due to the reason that it's based on the previous design):

floor 104 ???? :bash: fail!!!!! more floor 110 ... for original World Trade Center FLOOR 110

The last real floor is 104th, 105th is the roof, then we have the Cooling Tower's catwalks (106), the Communications Ring (107-109) and a platform inside the spire numbered as 110th. This graphic (http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/1976/floors.jpg) shows the real numbering.

Observation deck at 1362 ft? Is that the roof? SSP says the roof is 1368 ft which is only 8 feet higher
The roof is the 105th fl, El. 1,645' 10", or 1334' 8" from finished lobby floor. The Observation Deck will ocupy floors 100 & 101, El. 1551' 2" and 1565' 4", or 1241' 8" and 1255' 10" above the lobby floor. SSP is wrong. :okay:

About that data on the last page:

It says, of the pools, each will hold enough water to fill 50 Empire State Buildings to capacity, does that just mean fill the pipes of the Empire State Building? I can't picture that it meant filling all the empty spaces in the building, wouldn't the pools need to be crazy deep then?

Is there any idea or diagram, how fast they will put couple of upper mechanical floors? I´m sure, they complete next 8 office floors until the end of October, but I don´t know, how tall will be next beams at each floor.

So my opinion is: Jan/ Feb 2012: Roof is T/O
March/ Apr 2012: Spire is T/O
March/ Apr 2012: 4 wtc is T/O

I thought the same. As you said, it can't be filling the volume of the Empire State Building 50 times, since the footprint of the ESB is roughly similar to the area of the pools, a rough calculation tells you that they have to be like 350 meters x 50= 17500 meters deep! which obviusly they're not. Anyway, that fact is odd.

Now I'm puzzled. From where was the 1645 feet measure measured? :dunno:

All PANYNJ projects use Battery Park point as 0 elevation, which is 300' below mean high tide. So if the lobby is at El. 311' 2", it is only 11' 2" above the mean high tide.
Check the diagrams I have been doing since last year, I hope I can answer your questions without typing. ;)

 I love how Lower Manhattan looks like a man-made mountain range from New Jersey (Or Staten Island, is that?). Sends me a sensual shiver down my spine.

And if you love this aspect of LM, you're gonna love the new WTC cause unlike the old WTC, the new WTC is built in a rising mountain style that works perfectly with it's surroundings (rising spiral effect of the towers)

That was an excellent video giving information on what is being built.

But the end sure is depressing - 2020 before the site is all complete. That is 18 years after the attack and just too long. We won WWII in 4 years and got to the moon in under 10. This is a great complex but I just wish they could have worked faster.

These pictures are awesome but can someone please explain what we are looking at. My guess is that we are looking at the structural steel way up towards the top of the building and what we see down below in the middle is where the core is being constructed and it is five or 6 floors below where the structural steel is. Is that a correct guess.

I still don't know how they construct the core AFTER they put all the surrounding steel up. Also, I still don't know how they get concrete up so high. And finally if that is the core why don't I see rebar in those pictures?

Oops, sorry for one embarrassing mistake - now that I look closer I think I see rebar.

Your guess is correct..

About the core..After surrounding steel they make walls of steel rebars..After that, they adjust concrete forms around the steel and walls made of rebars..I call them walls because those rebars make thick steel net which looks like it could be a wall..Anyway, after concrete forms are in position they pour concrete in them..Concrete is being pumped with the pumps..You can see them on the pic..Those green and red things are concrete pumps..And that's it..After concrete is dry, they simply move on the next floors..

Thanks Dino!!

But a follow question. It looks like the re-bar is on the side. So what goes exactly where the concrete pumps are? ie, what goes in the middle? Is is basically a solid concrete mass with stairwells in it? It looks like those pumps or on a solid concrete floor.

Also, how do they raise things for the core work? I don't see cranes there to pull things up.

In the middle is empty space for elevators..The core is like a vertical tunnel..You have thick concrete walls around the empty space where lift cabins run up and down..Stairwell is also in it but separated form elevators with a wall..Those pumps are placed on temporary wooden floor..It's also for workers to easily access to rebars and stuff..

And how they lift those things is mystery to me..I've seen how things work with cranes, but never what they do with the core forms..But my guess would be that they have installed hydraulic arms somewhere in there..In fact, I'm glad you asked this, I'm gonna try to research..

This is the system:

http://enr.construction.com/features/_gallery/050912/050912-5.asp

It's self climbing and fast so they don't lag too much behind the steel..
I'll research for more details..

World Trade Center Fun Facts: Downtown’s Tallest Structure and a Whole Lot of Cranes

By Matt Chaban 5:41pm

http://www.observer.com/files/2011/08/World_Trade_Center_Construction.png

The Observer has heard some surprising ground zero factoids in the past couple days in some unsuspecting places.

The first came during the preparations for Hurricane Irene, when Mayor Bloomberg revealed that the World Trade Center was home to 13 of the 24 tower cranes in the city. That’s more than half, which makes sense, given the enormity of the task, but also underscores the importance of the site to the city’s construction industry.

Which was the point of yesterday’s New York City Building Congress forum where the second detail came up. Defiant Port Authority executive director Chris Ward mentioned that 1 World Trade Center is now the tallest building downtown. “At 1 World Trade Center, we are now at the 80th floor,” he said. “One World Trade Center is now the tallest building in Lower Manhattan at more than 960 feet above street level, surpassing 40 Wall Street. Floor slabs for 1 World Trade Center are at the 71st floor and the glass curtain wall is up to the 52nd floor.”

Just watched a really breath taking and heart braking documentary on an English channel called ITV, about the events that took place. At the end it had some facts, one of the facts was 'one world trade centre' is currently under construction on ground zero and is 400ft taller then previous WTC, it is due for completion 2013.

Surely the fact is not true?

I'm still afraid it will..There's no way that a couple of those stripes in the blast wall lighten up the lobby that much..I think they'll need light turned on in there all day..White walls will help but not that much as it's shown on the render..

This building isn't actually going to be 1,776' tall.
Main Lobby is at Elv. 311'2
North Entrance is at 307'10"
Beacon is at 2087'2, 1776' above main lobby floor, but 1779'4 above north entrance.
PLUS, if you look at the top of the diagram, there's an 8' section above the beacon, making it 1787'4" tall. (544.92m)

1787 is actually a much better number, when you think about it. 1776 was when we declared independence from a country that's now an ally. How the hell is that really relevant to this building? 1787, on the other hand, was the year the US Constitution was written. A living, active document, and is therefore much more relevant.

Fab design and fab building. In 1999 I had the privilege of going up Tower 2 of the Twin Towers to the observation deck. I can never remember for sure if that was Tower 1 or 2 but I think it was Tower 2 the one open to the public.

Hello guys!

While in the metro (french Tube) this morning, I read an article coming from a free daily paper saying this:

11 September

A replica of the Twin Towers

The association The French will never forget (TFWNF) will commemorate the 9/11 bombings by edifying a replica of the Twin Towers on the Droits de l'Homme square in Paris' 16th arrondissement. The first tower will be covered in names of the victims and the second one will display the support messages received worldwide. A laser lighting scheme coming from both towers are to illuminate the Eiffel Tower. According to some diplomat, quoted by Reuters, it will actually be 'the most important solidarity event in the world'.

I'll try to take some pictures...:)

The Twin Towers will be 25 meters tall. To open the ceremony, 70 kids will bring the biggest US & French flags in the World (designed especially on that occasion). There will be a free gig too...

For those understanding french a bit, here's an article ----> http://www.lecourrierdelarchitecte.com/article_2110

That commemoration in France looks awesome, and as Americans we are very grateful for it. If anyone can get pictures of it we would be very happy to see them.

Dino, thanks for the video. Very nice. I, like many, have been very annoyed at how long this rebuild has taken. But once things get built we tend to forget about that very quickly and just enjoy it. I think that will be the case with the WTC.

Me and other Americans appreciate you, the people of France, reflecting on and remembering the tragedy that occured on 9/11. The US and France disagree on many issues, but this commemoration shows that there is still an underlying connection between the two countries.

Apparently one firefighter was killed when a person who jumped from the building landed on him. And finally those who watched the documentary the bit where the firefighters described how they had to run over bodies to get there was also really upsetting.

I don't get you patrick...what's wrong about this replica? What's missing, the antennas? Let me remind you that the aim of that commemoration isn't to display a replica as faithfull/tall as the original towers! If you look at the drawings closely, you'll see (perhaps) that the Twin Towers form a giant '11' figure, admit that with the antennas, it would have ruined that effect...

Otherwise, just know that the 'Frogs' are far from being 'ignorant', think twice in the future before 'criticizing' for free. A word to the wise...

I'll try my best to go to the Trocadéro so I can take a few pics, but there will certainly be loads of journalists on the spot as well, so I guess you guys will easily find pics/videos on the internet, It will be impossible to miss it I think ;).

I don't want to drag this thread off topic, as 1 WTC really is coming along well and will look good come its completion, but this video proves that it's never going to have the same appeal or iconic status in the skyline the twins did. No, the Port Authority datum which is something like 300 feet below low tide at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. For short hand, think of it as 300 feet below sea level, making the lobby 11 feet above the water.

Yes, the north entrance on to Vesset St will count under current guidelines.

No, it's not removable. It's a permanent piece of structure and will count under official guidelines. The building will be 1,787 feet tall.

I've noticed the tapering already. What I fail to see is the resemblance of an obelisk... What do you think? ^^

Like Otie said, from a 45 degree angle view, along with the guy wires for the spire, it kind-of sort-of looks like an obelisk. Doesn't stand out too much though.

^The Kevlar wires will hardly be noticable, since there are only 8, each one being 6" diameter.

Opening ceremony of the tower or the memorial? I'm pretty sure that all major television networks in the US are scheduled to air the memorial service straight from the 9/11 memorial on 9/11/11.

You can also expect many specials airing during primetime that day instead of regular programming.

Hi all.

No, the Port Authority datum which is something like 300 feet below low tide at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. For short hand, think of it as 300 feet below sea level, making the lobby 11 feet above the water.

Hi STR.

The PANYNJ datum is set so that elevation 0 is 297.37 feet below NGVD1929. I did some googling. :) Makes sense for them so their tunnels can use positive numbers.

Yes, the north entrance on to Vesset St will count under current guidelines.

It's good the lowest entrance will fit the criteria.

No, it's not removable. It's a permanent piece of structure and will count under official guidelines. The building will be 1,787 feet tall.

Cool.
So the height to arch. top and the height to tip will be the same - as it is for many buildings.

To be honest, I think a black cladding somewhat similar to the scaffolding at the base would look pretty nice on the building. Case in point: this picture:

It won't happen..It will be brighter because street level is darker..No one want's to make it more dark than it already is..It's pure logic..Reflective and bright to bring light down into the canyon..

Would it really hurt the canyon if a small part of the building would be black? I doubt that :dunno:

I was speaking in general..In this case, probably not because of open space above the memorial..But back on the Vesey street is different story..If architects wanted to put black glass, they could, no one can stop them..But I'm 99,9% sure they won't..

Has anyone noticed how at night the Beekman and 1WTC are going to kinda look like the twin towers from those "under the Brooklyn Bridge" shots. Just the silhouette of the skyline, I mean

I notice that the beam in this picture is dimpled is that for seismic mitigation (strong column weak beam design).

I might be wrong, but it looks like a "dog bone" moment connection. If there's any deflection, it will be directed to this "dimple" thus protecting the actual connection from damage.

Yes, it insures that the platic hinge occurs outside the column beam joint. It is for seismic concerns.

Perspective..It's higher, closer to the camera, so it looks bigger..
