KyleDavid September 14th, 2011, 03:09 AM Yes it is. You need to reserve free passes at the memorial's website
www.national911memorial.org.
Will it always be like that? Reserving passes? Or will it eventually be free to go as you want to the public

For the first couple years, you will have to reserve passes. Later it will become like all parks, just walk on.
azn_man12345 September 14th, 2011, 04:06 AM Whew. Idk about that one. Nothing beat the two towers in the skyline.

Four shorter towers...
They are still tall and when they are done will look good but it's hard for me to get over the height that won't be replaced.

They have to control the flow because of all the construction. It must be difficult to deal with people and all this construction as well. I am sure there are gonna be days where the memorial is closed. Especially around the north memorial, they still have a lot of trees to plant in that area.
patrick989 September 14th, 2011, 06:36 AM Let us please not have the pointless "which WTC is better?" debate.
Draegen September 14th, 2011, 08:00 AM To some of the newer members, this thread is strictly about 1WTC. The memorial has its own forum thread here

As far as I'm aware:
The original 1 WTC was 1,368 feet to the roof. The new 1 WTC will be 1,368 to the roof and 1,776+ to the spire, ~40 feet taller than the mast of the original 1 WTC. The original 2 WTC was 1,362 to the roof, the new will be 1,350 to the spire. Obviously 3 WTC and 4 WTC are taller than the original 3,4,5, and 6 WTC. The new 7 WTC is also substantially taller than the original.
So while 2 WTC will be 12 feet shorter(or 99% the height of the original 2 WTC), I don't think that's particularly noticeable. The new complex, at least to me, adequately replaces the height of the old towers.
bennyboo September 14th, 2011, 10:00 AM towers 3 and 4 were the ones that were substantially taller to their predecessors 7 is relatively close in height but is taller.
overall you are right just wanted to fix that ;D

Gendo September 14th, 2011, 11:38 AM That day changed my life...
It was the day that changed all of our lives, the day that changed the entire course of humanity's future.
gus.carrasco September 14th, 2011, 11:57 AM Great updates... :applause:
Gendo September 14th, 2011, 12:38 PM I reckon the job they've made of the whole memorial site looks bloody awesome, but the shafts of light, while amazing, seems to be kind of a shame located a few blocks away. I know the lights are only temporary and there wasn't a plan to light them all the time, but imagine if they could have sunk all those lights into the floor, as a permanent part of the memorial, on the exact outline of the footprints of the original towers. Even if they were only lit one day of they year, it would have been so much more of an accurate tribute.
Good point. I would think that idea could always be retrofitted in at some later date.
Ughh...I hope it's just a couple months or 1 year max.
It will probably have to be a few years. There is an enormous amount of construction going on all around, and underneath the site. Having to obtain the pass to go to the memorial is probably meant as a way to keep hoards of people from trying to be at the memorial all at once for the time being because there's already an extremely high amount of congestion everywhere you look. It's mind boggling just how much is going within and around that 16 acre site.
Someday I would like to come see the place, but I would rather wait until all of the construction is complete.

It's kinda sad that one needs to get a reservation to see that memorial. Memorials should be open to the public freely. Especially this one since you can see it only when standing directly in front of it or in one of the surrounding towers :ohno:
azn_man12345 September 14th, 2011, 01:12 PM Right now there's too much construction going on all around for it to be open to the public.
Kanto September 14th, 2011, 01:18 PM I dunno but couldn't they open it to the public for only a few hours a day? Maybe when the construction workers have a pause? :dunno:

MissyC September 14th, 2011, 08:12 PM Maybe she's confusing the tribute in light with the memorial pools. The two aren't the same thing. The tribute in light is a few blocks away from 1WTC.
Ah I see ... thank you guys for the explanation .. now I get the whole picture and was indeed confused by the tribute lights and the memorial pools on the other side.
Wish there were such tribute lights from the middle center of the pools too or at least lit pools in different colors or pools full of those flickering lights like on Eifel Tower that will glitter in water and guess its effect will be dazzlingly pretty especially at night ...
If I could add one thing to the whole design, I would have implemented 3000 of such flickering lights in the pools each carrying the name of all those who passed away as to always shine and be alive.
DinoVabec September 14th, 2011, 08:16 PM Work started again on top of 1WTC..

It's about base cladding..
STR said they're going with the glass fins..Something like this:
http://www.145hudson.com/penthouse/images/glass/glass02.jpg
http://www.145hudson.com/penthouse/
And supposedly the fins will go in different directions..Note that this is not a glass for the base, it's only a example of something similar..We're still waiting for official renders..They're testing the glass right now..
Only rumors for now..

Otie September 15th, 2011, 01:00 AM Only rumors for now..
Naah... Architectural Record (McGraw Hill Construction) is a pretty serious magazine, so in my opinion there are no rumors but only the truth. :D
A controversial tower rises at ground zero (http://archrecord.construction.com/projects/portfolio/2011/09/One-World-Trade-Center.asp)
At the ground, each side of the building will have a cable-net-supported glazed portal, 60 feet tall, although the lobby will be otherwise surrounded in concrete. The architects had planned to camouflage the podium with tempered and laminated prismatic glass panels that would reflect, refract, and transmit light, in order to “establish a relationship with the water cascading in the memorial pools,” says Childs. However, after discovering that tempering caused the panels to bow, interfering with the laminating process, the project team devised another solution. The alternate, which sources describe as glass fins projecting from the facade at various angles, is now in the bidding phase but has yet to be finalized.

Yeah! Oh my god are this renders cool. The third one (counted from the end of collection) is my favourite one. I have the feeling, I have to travel in the year 2013 to New yORK ;). At my last visit, the highest observation deck was that at the roof of the Empire State building. This is going to change
Credo September 15th, 2011, 10:11 PM Congratulations, NYC and America: 1 World Trade Center is officially 1,000 feet tall.
Kanto September 15th, 2011, 10:16 PM Well, since new steel went up today it is again time for my famous roof height diagrams
1WTC is at this moment at floor 82 with a height of 310 meters / 1017 feet. It is currently the second tallest building in NYC and the 7th tallest building in the United States. It is only 1 foot shorter than the US bank Tower in LA:

And one more diagram to show the actual height of 1WTC and compare it with it's NYC neighbours:

I noticed that too. It does look a little "extra" tall. I'm sure its just a trick due to the angle, distance, so on. But it still looks a little off.
1WTC is certainly going to dominate Lower Manhattan. Just like the original twins did. And once finished, if there's no 2WTC for awhile, its going to really shine all by itself.
WTCNewYork September 15th, 2011, 10:24 PM I will update my diagram as soon as 1 WTC passes Chrysler building/NYTT. Really happy 1 WTC is now a supertall in terms of meters and feet.

That will be in two jumps. In the next jump it'll be 1044 feet tall, which is 2 feet less than CHB's spire. The jump after that one it'll be 1071 feet tall

Well, if 2WTC is the correct height, the pinnacle of that building is only slightly lower than the roof line of WTC1 on that render which is slightly difficult to make out. So it appears to be correct IMO.

Matsky September 16th, 2011, 10:52 PM I know, the most of you have said it already, but:
The One WTC looks fucking great in the Lower-Manhattan-Skyline.
I think, it's one of the most interesting and beautiful skyscraper-projects, that NY have ever seen. Congratulations to New York's Skyline. When all the new WTC's are built, it's the best skyline in the world. :banana2:
Said already, but: I HAVE TO VISIT NEW YORK soon
CrazyDave September 16th, 2011, 11:11 PM I think it should have had a pyramid on top, instead of a spire. That (in my opinion) would complete the design.
I agree, it's not designed tall enough. They should have designed it to be about 2,000 feet tall.
Matsky September 16th, 2011, 11:37 PM Yes, the spire looks so oversized. So superfluous. I would find it better too, without spire.
The pyramide is a good idea. ;)

No. Even though it could of been taller the design is perfect for new york. A huge pyriamid sticking out in the skyline looks stupid... Dont want to be like sand fran ;)

Might be. But I think they should let the building grow until it has reached without spire the 500 Metres, and after this, they can think about a 50 metres high spire, but a 120 metres high one is just oversized. This one is not made for a Skyscraper, its made for a telecommunication-tower, you now what i mean ;)
Matsky September 17th, 2011, 11:55 AM I don't come from NY, so I think i may ask this question: Which tower is the one next to the OWTC? In the right side of picture, between One WTC and Woolworth Building(?)?
Beautiful pics, by the way. ;)

Yeah, that would be nice but unfortunately it is now impossible. Once the foundations are made it is impossible to add height to a building cause a taller building needs bigger foundations

It's not impossible..You can add more height..Buildings are never calculated to the maximum..But as much as you add, that much is taken from the strength of the building..There are rules and laws you have to take care of in case you want to add something up..Also, you can't add 100 more floors or something like that..
Matsky September 17th, 2011, 12:17 PM Nr.1: Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, unfortunately. However, things are happening and nobody can change this now. Nevertheless I think, it's going to get a wonderful skyscraper, with, or without spire.

nice new angle. Just like if Wtc and Beekman are neighbors. :)
Scrapernab2 September 17th, 2011, 01:18 PM What a funny way to make jest of the building. It isn't built in Egypt, for that simple reason, pyramid is not necessarily needed.
There was no jest. I'm not sure what your point is, the building is already 8 pyramids.
Matsky September 17th, 2011, 04:08 PM nice new angle.
I think so too. I'm sure, there are going to come a lot of new angles in the future. NY is a big city, and the One World Trade Center a high building....
(Maybe, there's someone cheeky, climbs up the Brooklyn-Bridge and takes some photos )

Miami High Rise September 17th, 2011, 10:07 PM This might be referring to an old design:
The overall office space of the entire rebuilt World Trade Center will be reduced by more than 3,000,000 square feet (280,000 m 2 ) as compared with the original complex.
bennyboo September 17th, 2011, 10:38 PM that is not true ^
patrick989 September 17th, 2011, 11:10 PM nice new angle. Just like if Wtc and Beekman are neighbors. :)
Personally I don't like the view from this angle. Feels like Beekman kind of steals 1 WTC's thunder from that perspective. But 1 WTC will be almost completely covered up from that angle by tower 2 in the coming years, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Kanto September 18th, 2011, 10:44 PM I too. It would make me feel small. :)
I'm looking forward the big opening. When I know exactly when and where, I'm going towait, buy a ticket on the airport and fly to NY. And then, I will take 20000 photos .
This is going to be a moment, where I HAVE TO BE there.:cheers:
Me too. Even though I already have a family I still didn't give up on my dream of living in the US. If I would ever get there the first place I'd visit would be 1WTC :master:
Matsky September 18th, 2011, 11:49 PM ;) I think so, too. I've a family and since I'm a child, I wished I live in the US. I don't know why, but it is how it is. Yes, and I'm sitting still in Vienna, and waiting, that time passes.
;) Maybe in two years...
I hope it's going to get true :D
DinoVabec September 19th, 2011, 12:10 AM A little bit detailed info about the new base glass, but still nothing visual..
Above the blast wall and the lobby is a layer of infrastructural floors reaching to 57 meters above ground; this lower section will be covered in reflective glass. “The idea is to make it lively. The architects didn’t want it to look so dead at the bottom of the building,” Tollner says. The original plan to sheath the base in prismatic glass fell through earlier this year after millions of dollars failed to produce a satisfactory glass product. “This new design is completely different,” Tollner says. “It’s going to have glass fins, and they will have a very nice reflective quality. They’re not going to be completely flat against the building, and they’ll have a frosted texture behind. When they light up the building from within you’ll get some interesting patterns.”

Mike____ September 19th, 2011, 01:38 AM I dont understand that some people find the spire "too tall" ... the proportions are great IMO...

Take a look to this gallery (http://www.145hudson.com/penthouse/ph-glass.swf) of 145 Hudson (a penthouse in Tribeca), it has interesting stuff that gives you a clear idea of what they are playing with..
oilmanjr September 19th, 2011, 04:03 AM ^^ Do the fins have a purpose other than decoration?
Otie September 19th, 2011, 04:11 AM ^ The mechanical equipment is already protected by black vents, perhaps the base needs to be clad to protect even more the mechanical floors..

I'm worried about the high reflective properties of the glass fins, from some angles it'll reflect dark things like buildings, and we all know that glass does reflects things in a darker tone... Can't imagine how horrendus the base could look from a really high viewpoint such as from helicopters...
edit: Oh wait! From other upper angles the base will reflect very nice the trees of the Memorial and hopefuly the reflection of the sky in the voids..

Rise To The Top September 19th, 2011, 10:09 AM ^^ Do the fins have a purpose other than decoration?
Facade fins can act as a barricade from interior to street. A few new buildings on my campus have them and they are solely to minimize the area from which the interior can be seen, though this is only feasible with opaque glass.

Exactly..Actually, depends on angle..But there's a lot of colors and tones down on the street level, so I believe reflections will be awesome..
I hope to see something like that glass on museum..That would be sweet..
