^^ That's true. But the glass of 7 WTC isn't ugly.
It's better this way, just imagine every building in the complex would have the same glass like One WTC. That wouldn't look even better. It's okay now!
But I think, everyone has his own taste, and I don't want to argument about this ;)

@pnapp:
Have you built it on your own?
It looks awesome :applause:

1WTC's glass looks far better than 7WTC's. I like when the glass is without lines.

I prefer that each of the WTC buildings has different glass. As a group they will look much better that way.

My visit to Ground Zero/The World Trade Center site today, October 2, 2011...
It's hard to explain what the feeling is at the site and around the World Financial Centre... it's such a busy area with so much life, and construction, yet, there's a hollowness and surrealness knowing that the Twin Towers once stood on this ground....

^Tower One is a mixture of both: a hybrid tube structure with a monotholitic core. Much of the loads go straight to the core, while the rest to the perimeter columns. The outer structure was designed in such a way that in any event that a column failed, the gravity loads of the floors above travel to alternative load paths in adjacent columns. Unlike the twins, the inner columns that form the core are encased in rebar and super-concrete; the core compressive strength is higher than any other typical office skyscraper; varying from 8,000 psi (used in the roof) up to 14,000 psi (base).
The base is even stronger than the rest of the tower: the entire frame can withstand the loss of as many as 3 of 6 perimeter columns on any side of the podium. ;)

The same principle http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=457285 The building has been disigned be able to withstand plane attack.

^^ And that is what supertalls are build for. From what I know it is economicaly more profitable to build more smaller buildings rather than few larger buildings. Supertalls are built for impression, which is in my opinion more important than strict profit. Morale does wonders to productivity of workers and working in an imposing, unique masterpiece of art like 1WTC will boost the morale of it's occupants a lot because they will feel privileged and proud to work in such an awesome place. Nice. I actually flew into LGA last night. Don't have a picture from that but I do have one when I flew out on Friday. This is Manhattan from North-South at ~7,000ft. If you zoom in all the way you can sort of make out 1WTC.

Btw, here is my NYC construction roof diagram. It's incomplete because I dunno how tall 157 is. Also, it should be noted that the height of 4WTC again isn't 100% precise. If anybody has info about the heights of 157 or 4WTC, please lemme know :cheers:

http://i51.tinypic.com/efm77k.jpg

1WTC = 319 meters or 1047 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 208 meters or 682 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet

(Note: I used the 418 meter figure for 1WTC when measured from the lowest above ground entrance and I used the 298 meter figure for 4WTC.)

Ironworkers have rule not to work when it's too "wet"..Security reasons, and of course, they can't weld wet steel..

On the other hand, talking about shiny..

Looks like those lower floors may be getting clad soon.

You mean the base? I don't see anything different going on down there that would make me think they're going to clad it soon.

We've already gotten plenty of rain, fog, and wind during the Spring and Summer seasons so Fall shouldn't be that different. They only have 4 office floors left to go (or 6, depending on whether they decide to make 89 & 90 office floors) then the mechanical floors start and if the weather does get bad it could slow things down once the office floors are completed. December, January, and even February would be the slowest months for construction and that's exactly what happened for 2011 so hopefully 2012 will be different.

^^^^ On this pic you can see (unfortunately) the smog of NY.
Actually, it's not smog which is a combination of smoke and fog, originally...........New York City does not have a bad air pollution problem especially for it's size, compared to some other cities in the US and there arent that many of them that do outside of California . Of course there are days in the summer and fall that do but by and large the weather changes so much and the wind regular enough that there isn't China like smog issues in NYC

Another point, wet steel is slippery. It's very dangerous to walk a thousand+ feet up in high winds on wet surfaces. Most workers have tie-offs for safety, but not the guys who have to climb up the columns. And climbing a wet column is damn hard.

Here is my new NYC construction roof diagram now with 157 as well. It should be noted that the height of 4WTC and of 157 isn't 100% precise. If anybody has precise info about the heights of 157 or of 4WTC, please lemme know :cheers:

http://i55.tinypic.com/2pqpduc.jpg

1WTC = 319 meters or 1047 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 208 meters or 682 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet
157 = Approximately 125 meters or 410 feet out of 306 meters or 1005 feet

(Note: I used the 418 meter figure for 1WTC when measured from the lowest above ground entrance and I used the 298 meter figure for 4WTC.)

They are really making great progress. Topping out in January-March 2012? Right now the best place to see its height is from Jersey or down near the site. Once its height reaches where the top of the cranes are now, the view from Brooklyn, and pretty much everywhere else will be great. Will really stand out then!

I'm amazed by the progress made at the world trade center site I remember a while back when everyone was excited about it getting past 7 WTC, and now it's just rocketed into the skyline I love this building and I love NYC

Yes I remember it was a big deal when 1WTC surpassed 7WTC.

When it tops out it will be a huge moment! Talk about media attention and when that ceremony happens and we see that last beam being raised it will be like rebirth. And that's BEFORE they raise the spire! :)

1WTC = 319 meters or 1047 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 208 meters or 682 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet
1 57 = Approximately 125 meters or 410 feet out of 306 meters or 1005 feet

I strongly doubt that all or even the majority know what he is reffering to. If somebody asked it meant that somebody didn't know. Also keep in mind that samdam doesn't even have 100 posts, making the chance that somebody knows what measurement he's using even far smaller :cheers:

One World Trade does have the second highest rooftop in New York City, but it isn't "officially" the second tallest because if spires didn't count One World Trade's symbolism of 1,776 feet with the spire would be meaningless so spires do count regardless. If spires didn't count and height was based on rooftop height, One World Trade wouldn't be the tallest in the U.S., Willis Tower would be. I just wish spires could be acknowledged more because take ESB or Wills Tower for example. Empire is jumped up to 1,454' with the antenna and Willis is 1,730'. Conde Nast at 4 Times Square is about 1,118' I believe. John Hancock goes up to 1,500'. I mean the height exists, the problem with those is that their antennas were added later on or weren't counted toward the official height. One World Trade will get to where it needs to be in time so people shouldn't be worried about the current height.

If this isn't the pot calling the kettle black, then I'm not sure what is. There is no debate about height measurements. The pinnacle height includes the spire, and that's that. kanto is a troll? you people dont understand the definition of troll, do you?

Definition of Troll (from Wikipedia):
"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion"

I'd argue that Kanto provokes a negative emotional response in a lot of us because he knows we don't follow his roof height crusade, and he knows it annoys many of us but continues to do so. Plus his posts usually devolve into a disruption of normal on-topic discussion, which he then blames on everyone else even though he is the cause.

I don't think he necessarily has bad intentions, but it's frustrating when he posts incorrect information due to his fixation on roof heights.

Im Using A Computer
October 10th, 2011, 01:25 AM
kanto doesnt seem to bother people just for the hell of bothering them, however. i think he posts because he wants to advocate what he believes in, whether it bothers others or not.

oilmanjr
October 10th, 2011, 02:06 AM
Kanto's motive is to annoy us. aznman once asked Kanto to stop using the shrugging shoulders icon and Kanto did it in every one of his next 20 or so posts, even when it didn't apply. It's a small and irrelevant example, but it shows his motive nonetheless. He is a troll and is the reason we are off-topic.

As for him "advocating what he believes in," roof height is no longer the official height measurement, so whether he believes that is how it should be or not, that's not how it is. He continues to bring up the topic and flood new readers with false information and nothing seems to be done about it.

Ya they are right caddy corner from 4WTC. Hope they leave before they stink up the work-site too much. I've already seen a few articles about complaining construction workers.

Please people, don't troll in this thread. ...

I normally agree with you, but I must point out that you're the one who first brought it up...

Pretty pictures, Otie! They're both amazing, but I can't get over how pictures like the first one blend in with the WFC so well.

Oh my, there's a flying saucer in this photo :hahano:

Btw, to respond to the civilized critics, I agree that maybe I made a mistake by not saying in my post that I'm using roof height as well and byrequiring samdam to announce that he's using official height in this thread and not by sending him a PM. If so I would like to apologize and promiss that from now on I'm gonna mention in every post about height that I speak about roof height and that everything related to it I will solve via PMs. I have no bad intentions and if somebody has a problem with me, please PM me, but please keep it civilized, thank you :cheers:

And to get a bit on topic again, I think it's time for the PA cam again:

Kanto, how do you do that (the Flickr thing)? :lol: I can't figure it out for the life of me.

How old are you boys? 10, 11? I would say 12 tops. :|

Haven't been on for a while so I must admit that I'm staggered by the progress having been done lately. 1WTC is already dominating the Lower Manhattan skyline and it still has well over 700 feet to go. Also, the higher this tower gets the more I appreciate its design.

EDIT: I'm surprised that Kanto is still here, I really thought he wouldn't survive that long (at least on SSP he didn't...). The mods must be blind in both eyes.

what's the story with the wood in the foreground? sorry if this is a stupid or frequently asked question

There used to be a Ferry Terminal , and Railway docks along the Jersey City Waterfront. Starting in the 1970s they were closed and the Railway network / Ferry Terminal moved to Hoboken which is the largest and only Full Intermodal Terminal in this region. Those wooden piers or pegs will be torn up when the New Marina gets built.

I'm from the U.K. and I am going to New York and Chicago next August, at what stage will the tower be at by then?

I'm expecting it to be fully topped out, fully cladded and the spire will be under-construction. Is this correct?

Thanks

Next August? By then it'll be either newly complete or very very close to completion (externally) :)

Interesting stuff. I don't know if these renders have been posted before, I looked at a few previous pages and I haven't seen them.

This pic from October 9th is also very cool. I haven't seen it in the previous pages.

When looking at the site from this view, all I see is a perfect location for another 1WTC in the space of the old Deutsche Bank building. The two memorial pools flanked perfectly by new twins at each outer corner.

I visited this site in July 2009, the first few steel beams were being erected above ground level, and then I visited again in September 2010 when the podium was constructed and they were about 10 levels above it.

I had looked at hundreds of photos of this site but it wasn't until I was actually there that I was shocked by the actual scale of this thing. It's massive! I can't wait to go back in August next year!!

^^ I was there in march 2010 and was amazed by the size the whole complex has, and the amount of noise the construction causes.

Wait until WTC2 starts to rise. It will be visually more massive than this tower. WTC1 has the tappering, while WTC2 just has the slanted roof, which will result in amazingly tall and bold walls, going up, from street level to the sky.

WTC3, will have a grander visual impact than the ESB, which is an amazingly bold building.

People underrate the volume of this complex, and the impact it will have on people.
