Ewan117 November 4th, 2011, 02:44 AM Thanks :tyty: And comparing the old WTC to the new WTC is a good idea. Here is what I just made:
Roof height used below!
http://i44.tinypic.com/23rl5oo.jpg
This diagram is updated with today's height jump of 4WTC. It looks like now it has approximately 227 meters or 742 feet but as Spectre said in the 4WTC thread, it is still questionable whether it's the steel for the 2 trapezoid office floors or it's still an oversized last non-trapezoid mechanical floor steel so this data is still questionable
Btw, msl1, I'm using roof height in my diagrams so the buildings are in the correct order according to that
That means that in terms of height, the new WTC will have the same impact on the skyline as the old one? Just that it will be a single building coupled with shorter ones, rather than two 400m's?

Kanto November 4th, 2011, 07:02 PM I'm kinda puzzled, iirc they always started new floors with perimeter columns but now they're starting them with core columns even though floors 87 and 88 should still be normal office floors :dunno:
the man from k-town November 4th, 2011, 07:46 PM why don't they use concrete around the steel columns to enforce them? that would be much more safer if a fire would start like in the former twin towers
Otie November 4th, 2011, 08:28 PM why don't they use concrete around the steel columns to enforce them? that would be much more safer if a fire would start like in the former twin towers
Core columns get encased in extra-strong concrete, varying from 8,000psi to 14,000psi. Perimeter columns must face wind load, rather than gravity load. That's one of the many reasons why they don't get encased into concrete. Perimeter, floor & filler beams get a spray fireproofing. :okay:
psi=pounds per square inch

They almost always start new floors with the core first!
DinoVabec November 4th, 2011, 10:58 PM 1 World Trade gets its glass pedestal
After months of effort, and one failed plan, architect devises an appealing skin for 185-foot-tall, fortified-concrete base of New York's tallest building-to-be.
By Theresa Agovino
November 4, 2011 10:08 a.m.
Updated: November 4, 2011 10:39 a.m.
The architect of 1 World Trade Center has finally devised a way to clad the concrete base of the tower in shimmery glass. The breakthrough comes after technical problems forced designers to abandon an earlier glass-sheathing plan last spring, sources said.
Architect David Childs had wanted to encase the 185-foot-tall base in prismatic glass panels to disguise the thick, windowless fortified concrete that is one of the tower's signature safety elements. The idea was to have it not look like a bunker. The massive concrete base means that office space in the 1,776-foot tower doesn't start until the 20th floor. The challenge then was to create a facade that suggested movement, life and light where none existed. However, the panels of prismatic glass, which were designed to reflect light, were not only difficult to make: As it turned out, they also shattered easily.
Now, sources said the base will be covered with glass louvers that are set at different angles on the base and lit from behind, creating an inviting atmosphere that would also reflect the nearby memorial honoring the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The glass is treated so it would pebble instead of shatter in case of an explosion, much like a car windshield does in a severe accident.
Sources said the building's majority owner, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, has already received bids for what sources said would be about $45 million in glass. The Port Authority's board is to be briefed on the plans and bids in the next two weeks. A spokesman for the Port Authority declined comment. Mr. Childs didn't return a call.
In 2008, the Port Authority awarded an $82 million contract to manufacture and put up the glass, but it was unclear how much of that money was ever dispersed.
The dilemma over the glass is just the latest design challenge for a building that has to be among the safest in the world because of its allure as a potential terrorist target. Yet at the same time it must be distinctive enough to symbolize the city's rebound from tragedy. In an interview with Crain's earlier this year, Mr. Childs, a consulting design partner at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, said, “It had to be a proud gesture to our resilience.”
Mr. Childs had to redesign the building back in 2005 when the New York Police Department voiced concerned about whether the tower could withstand a blast from a car bomb. A year later, Mr. Childs presented the plan with the glass-wrapped concrete base.

Chapelo November 6th, 2011, 06:57 PM ^^Oh, did you work in the old WTC?
I worked on the 99th floor of the North Tower from November 1997 to well, September 2001. I was 20 years old, and started out as an IT Intern for Marsh McLennan, then became a permanent employee (desktop support) in August 1998. My cubicle was in the northwest corner of the building, overlooking 7WTC and the Westside Highway.
I was off work the week of 9/11, went to my dad's Navy retirement ceremony in California. From what I understand, my floor was in the impact zone, and if I had been there that day, I would have been wiped out by the jet impact.
I won't get into too much detail, but most of my colleagues and friends were lost that day, wonderful people who I'll never forget. Still can't wrap my head around the events of that horrible day.
Matsky November 6th, 2011, 07:01 PM ^^ WOW, That's what I call a coincidence!
Exactly at this day, you weren't at your workplace. But horrible, what happened to your friends... But lets talk about some other things, I don't wanna put anything in the mental microwave and warm them up...
Matsky November 6th, 2011, 07:03 PM But I'm sure you had a great view about NYC.
Chapelo November 6th, 2011, 07:16 PM But I'm sure you had a great view about NYC.
The windows were a little too narrow for great views, but the views were good nonetheless. Especially on days when it was foggy; I was high enough in the building that you could look out on such a morning and see nothing but a blanket of fog for miles and miles.
I do have some photographs of my office, the people, and the views; I will share them once I can get access to a decent scanner.

I'm to the point where it still affects me, but I can talk about it without getting emotional. Part of the healing process was me leaving the company (and New York) in January 2002 and returning to my hometown of San Diego. I'm toying with the idea of moving back to NYC and getting my old job back with MMC.
Matsky November 6th, 2011, 07:19 PM Ok, I understand...Well I hope you are going to find find the photos of the view.
It's a shame, that there aren't more photos in the web, which are taken from there.

I have a couple hundred photos taken over the span of November 1997 to September 2001. I'll get mine scanned, but these should give you an idea. I believe these were taken from the 58th floor of the South Tower in 1999. Our offices in the North Tower didn't look too different.

Thank you. I guess in a way, watching One World Trade Center rise is part of the healing process, restoring the hole not only in the skyline, but in our hearts.
I was originally in the camp that felt the Twins should be rebuilt, even taller, and to an extent, I still feel that way, but since this building has started getting taller, it's really grown on me. Can't wait for the rest of the site to be complete

You know, of all the plans I saw for rebuilding the Twins, the Gardner-Belton plan (same plan Trump endorsed back in 2005) was the most complete, best designed one ever conceived. It had larger windows, a reinforced concrete core, and I believe it would have stood at 111-115 stories. Granted, there's no chance it'll be built now, but it was definitely a viable alternative, considering Mr. Belton was employed by the same firm that did the structural engineering for the original Twins, and they already had a complete set of plans from which construction drawings could be made.
As far as the grey is concerned, keep in mind that they were designed in an era when aesthetics weren't as important as they are today. More than anything else, the Twins were designed for functionality, despite the fact that the superblock was somewhat disconnected from the fabric of Manhattan; a problem that's been rectified with the current plans restoring Fulton and Greenwich streets through the site.
Kanto November 6th, 2011, 11:52 PM ^^ I absolutely love the Twin Towers 2 by Ken Gardner. In my opinion they are massively superior to what is being built in every single aspect except for the Twins 2 lacking the concrete base of the Freedom Tower. I wanted new twins very much, when I saw that there won't be Ken Gardner's new twins I at least wanted that there be two Freedom Towers and I never really gave up this wish of mine. However, I learned to live with the new WTC as it's built and I began liking it, sure, I still think the buildings are too short and that 1WTC needs a twin and that Twins 2 would have been far better but in general I love the new WTC. I even have it as my desktop now
Btw, here some info for you about the Twin Towers 2. They were supposed to be 450 meters or 1475 feet and they should have had 111 floors. Here is their SSP diagram:

I second that sentiment. My Aunt lived a few blocks away at 90 Gold Street (Southbridge Towers), right next to (at the present) the almost completed Beekman Tower, and I couldn't reach her for days! I finally made it to lower Manhattan a few days later, on Sunday ... Auntie was well, but a bit shaken up.

One World Trade Center is supposed to look like the former Twin Towers merged in one building, right? I'm so used to the idea that I can actually see it as the tower rises. I think it's the perfect tribute in a pure genious, sleek design.
For me, that's what so amazing about One WTC. A twin of it would just make no sense.
I've always loved the WTC, so at first that Ken Gardner proposal (btw, creepy memorial!) seemed to be the right thing to be built there. But it wouldn't be the "real" WTC. Unfortunately, 9/11 happened. I wish it didn't, but it did, so why not build something better?

For someone who doesn't speak any of the languages, both are very similar. And you cannot expect everyone to know one of the languages. It even happens to me (I'm German) that I hear something in Dutch and only after a few sentences I discern that it's not German.

By David W. Dunlap | November 7, 2011
With every passing week, 1 World Trade Center can be seen from more and more places around New York and New Jersey, which means that more and more places can be seen from 1 World Trade Center.
Which means that it’s time to start thinking about who will operate the observation deck, opening in the summer of 2014. It is to occupy 85,000 square feet on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors of the tower. The uppermost floor slab will be 1,268 feet above ground level; slightly higher than the aerie atop the Empire State Building (1,250 feet) but — as The Wall Street Journal noted — considerably lower than the Skydeck Chicago (1,353 feet), atop the Tower Formerly Known as Sears.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2011/11/03/blogs/20111103Tower2/20111103Tower2-custom1.jpg
A floor plan of the uppermost level of the observation deck at 1 World Trade Center shows the diamond shape resulting from tower’s tapering sides. This angled perspective should create dynamic vistas.
At the Tower Formerly Known as Freedom, the observation deck will have its own underground lobby on the west side of the building, to isolate visitors from office tenants. Five high-speed elevators will shoot visitors to the deck at 2,000 feet a minute. (That would work out to about a 40-second trip to the 102nd floor, much less time than we spend getting to the third-floor newsroom here at The Times.)
The Durst Organization and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, co-developers under the name Tower 1 Joint Venture L.L.C., have begun to cast their net for a likely operator. In their request for statements of qualification, they said that about five million visitors a year are expected at the World Trade Center site and that they were “open to creative ideas” for the observation deck.
At a minimum, applicants are expected to have developed, operated and managed “at least three (3) comparable venues,” which would seem on the face of it to be impossible, until you read a bit further to learn that means a high quality attraction within the tourism and leisure industry that attracts at least five hundred thousand (500,000) visitors per annum and has an annual operating budget of at least $5 million.
Statements of qualification are due Nov. 16. The developers will then compile a short list of prospects who will be asked to submit competitive design and operation plans. So it’s still a bit early to stand in line.

Chapelo November 8th, 2011, 05:19 AM I think anything taller would just look too tall and out of place, it feels just right to me as it is.
I agree; anything larger just wouldn't fit there, not to mention it would ruin the symmetry of Lower Manhattan. You have Beekman on one side, and the WTC on the other.
What's being built has the same scale as the old towers, and thus won't look out of place.

dfiler November 8th, 2011, 10:35 AM Does anyone have a width comparison between the old towers and the new WTC 1?
There were some posted a few pages back in this thread.
On the topic of height, I'm kind of glad the tower isnt taller. It's a strange phenomenon that tall buildings can ruin a skyline. If too tall, they can make all other buildings look small. Thus making the skyline subconsciously less impressive.
The world financial center and some other newer buildings in lower manahattan did this to some degree. They managed to make all the other smaller skyscrapers look small.
Ironically, what can detract from the perceived magnitude of a skyline in the short run, can actually be good in the long run. When enough of the larger scale buildings get built, the original larger scale buildings will be contributing rather than detracting from the sense of scale.
This rather bizarre observation also applied to the original twin towers. While they were impressive, they also managed to make all the other buildings unimpressive. A strange juxtaposition indeed.
dfiler November 8th, 2011, 10:49 AM Does anyone have a width comparison between the old towers and the new WTC 1?
The base is around 98% of the area of one of the old towers. Due to the taper of the sides, the roof is about 50% of the area of one of the old towers.
I haven't done the math but those numbers should be close. The new tower is just a couple feet shorter in width at the base, but both also also feature cut off corners. The new tower has a larger portion of the corner cutoff. That is, until it reaches 185 feet in height. So it really matters how you're measuring in order to get exact comparison numbers.
It would be great to see the exact numbers if anyone is willing to put in the effort...
Otie November 8th, 2011, 01:05 PM Tower One is 200' 1.5" (~60.99m) to the column centers. At the base, the overall footprint is going to be 205' (62.48m) +/- a few inches. The original twins were 207' 8" (63.27m) to the column centers and the overall footprint was ~210' (~64m).
Kanto November 8th, 2011, 01:21 PM One last thing I would like to add is that if the side of the base is 205 feet or 62 meters then the side of the roof is according to the Pythagor equation is 144 feet or 44 meters

That's true. I made this diagram when we thought that the new steel was for the setback floors. That's outdated info since it is now proven that it is only more steel for the mechanical floor. I posted this diagram only to compare how wide the buildings are
Btw, to the debate about how big is too big. I think there's no such thing as too big. The Twins were incredibly dominating buildings and I loved that. In my opinion it is the primary and most important attribute of a skyscraper to make other buildings arround it look insignifficant. I think a tower over 1 kilometer would look awesome in Lower Manhattan. For me it is the higher the better :banana2:

I thought that the One WTC was way to higher than the twin towers
tim1807 November 8th, 2011, 05:14 PM My preference is to build more skyscrapers around 300 m instead of one skyscraper around 600 m. And this towers aren't too dominating and let surrounding buildings looks like shad's, it just shows how extra big they are.
Kanto November 8th, 2011, 05:44 PM I thought that the One WTC was way to higher than the twin towers
The CTBUH height measurement is a very puzzling way to measure a building's height (that's why I use roof height instead). They make difference between spires and antennas. Spires are counted in the official height but antennas not. This leads to info that is in fact misleading. They make 1WTC appear far taller than the Twins, but in reality their heights are nearly identical
Matsky November 8th, 2011, 05:47 PM Well, I agree with tim.
I think One WTC is a little over sized, but in every case a cool building. I think, 400 Metres with 20 Metres spire would be enough, but I'm really happy about it now.

What do you mean?
I meant, it's really higher than the other buildings. That's why I think it's not perfect there. This is no attack! I really love 1 WTC.
I think, this effect disappears, when every building of the complex is ready.
Spire, Antenna: It think, the different is the height.

Tall buildings and explosions together do bring an offense to some however so it's understandable why they took the new symbolic WTC out of the game. There's some other tall building in it's place though - a lot more boxy. I honestly think the game will be getting a he'll if a lot if complaints though, London underground is also featured and various other worldwide landmarks.
I too love war games however you can't beat a little bit of innocent fun on Sim City! :D

The base is an octagon. Is that 200' 1.5" measurement the length of each of the four longer sides? Or is it the length of a square drawn exactly to enclose the octagon? (That square would be the size of the tower at 185' in height, where the tower is widest.)

Like I've already said, it may be that tower 1 was removed since it's the tallest to be symbolic to the former towers. Then I don't understand why 2wtc and 3wtc haven't been removed as surely they're breaching design copyright issues.

Mixed forecast for One W.T.C., says leasing exec
BY ALINE REYNOLDS | Tara Stacom, vice chairperson of the global commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, and a member of the firm’s global advisory board, has taken on one of Lower Manhattan’s most eminent office leasing projects: 1 World Trade Center, formerly dubbed the “Freedom Tower.” In a Nov. 2 interview, Stacom remarked on the building’s current and prospective tenants in light of the economic downturn, the building’s distinguishing characteristics and day-to-day activity at the site.
DE: What is so appealing about 1 W.T.C., from the perspective of an office tenant?
It’s truly a chance for a company to get on a global stage. The tower is a global icon — it’s going to be the largest, tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. It’s only up to 86 stories in steel, yet it makes an extraordinary impression. For many companies I’ve represented, from the smallest to the largest, the letterhead address is very significant in assisting to transform their identity around the world. When Rockefeller Center was built, and tenants put on their letterhead, “Rockafeller Plaza,” they got instant recognition. The W.T.C. site will do that in a far greater way, because it’s more iconic, it’s more discussed and talked about, and it’s architecturally renowned.
DE: Talk about the tenants you’ve secured thus far.
The first tenant which signed is Vantone, for about 190,000 square feet on floors 64 to 69. The second is Conde Nast, which took just over one million feet on floors 20 to 41.
DE: What kind of company is Vantone?
It’s actually a division of Vantone called China Center New York, a Chinese entity that houses companies from China coming to the U.S. to do business. It’s going to be a terrific asset for the bluilding. It’s owned by a renowned individual in China who hired a renowned architect to construct an extraordinary premises that the other tenants will benefit from, including a conference space and a club facility.
DE: How do you think Conde Nast’s lease-signing is continuing to influence the office market in 1 W.T.C. and Downtown in general?
Conde Nast is a global brand with cache. For many tenants in New York City, it shined a light on a Downtown that was thought to be solely for financial services and investment banking, which it has been for quite some time. Everyone jokes and smiles when saying how the young Goldman Sachs guys will wonderfully mix with the Conde Nast employees.
DE: In sealing new leases, are you targeting specific types of business or industries?
Yes, in that we’re looking at getting a very diverse roster within the building — not just from a size perspective but from an industry category perspective, and from a geographic perspective. We are [searching] for further international presence as we get closer to renting. We’re also looking for diversity [in size] and are ready to lease smaller spaces than your million-square-foot tenants — like one-to-two floors — so that we have a truly diverse, global building in every respect. We do have serious prospects currently from the Downtown community, and we want to attract other Midtown tenants, of course.
DE: Are there any other office tenants you’ve lined up that we don’t know about yet?
Conde was unusually out of the box early! There are more than a dozen that we’re tracking, including a creative firm and a law firm. Their brokers would prefer that I not mention their names. There are millions of feet of potential there — we have been touring actively and are having active dialogue with very large users as well as two-floor users.

micrip November 11th, 2011, 06:34 AM That actually looks pretty cool. I know...it's not gonna happen...but if they had rebuilt the twins, this version would have been way better than the original...lighter, airier, and less bulky.^^
Informative November 11th, 2011, 07:44 AM Also they moved Two World Trade Center back away from One World Trade Center so that the Building would cast no shadow on the new Memorial, which may be one reason why they didn't build 2 Freedom Towers next to each other. :)

germantower November 13th, 2011, 01:03 PM ^^ It's the new Goldman Sachs Headquarters (200 West Street).
Melb_SuperTall November 13th, 2011, 01:18 PM Its awesome! (but not as awesome as WTC1) :) Wtc1 its coming along great. Im most looking forward to seeing how it looks at night without all those super bright construction lights on and with just your average flourescents or L.E.D's.
germantower November 13th, 2011, 01:33 PM ^^ I hope they will lit up the silverish edges in whti, with the usual office lightings inbetween. A slightly blueish light for the communication ring, and indirect light for the spire. With the N being morsed at the spires tip.

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been on here in a while. I jetted to Africa to do some charity work and I didn't have internet there. Anyways, I am back to NYC! :)
Here is a pic of Lower Manhattan with the WTC soaring about the buildings from our helicopter:

600West218 November 13th, 2011, 10:22 PM I went to the site for the first time in two months today.
The closer WTC gets to completion the more I am convinced of something - we need WTC2 and WTC3 for this to work.
On it's own WTC 1 just doesn't look right and doesn't cut it. It is too small and looks lonely. I think the only way it looks decent is with all the other towers there and the transportation center too.
I think the WTC was designed as a complex and won't look right until the entire complex is complete.
So at this point I think I am going to start focusing on WTC 2 and 3 more than WTC 1. I hope they don't get delayed too much.

It wouldn't be standing completely alone, because 4 WTC is on its way to the top. But I think 1 WTC standing without Towers 2 and 3 would probably serve to better emphasize its dominance on the skyline (and 1 WTC is far from being "too small"). I've never liked the size and positioning of 2 WTC; either it should be much shorter, or it should have been switched with the transportation hub so that it wouldn't directly block the view of 1 WTC from the Brooklyn Bridge. I think I've argued about this about a dozen or so times here. I don't think we would have liked if buildings of similar height to the Twins were built around them, had they still been here today. That wouldn't have looked right. I think 1 WTC has the ability to stand without those other 2 towers if need be.
Sorry for the essay

Once again, does 7 WTC not count? It's right next to that building, and it's much taller. What are you talking about?
EDIT: Oh, I guess you mean in front of the direct space where 1 WTC is now. Well, okay, I guess.

Lol, I think it's because you usually see the NY skyline by itself in the most iconic photos. HK is frequently portrayed with 2 skylines divided by a body of water like in that photo.

That's actually a very nice essay  I would even go as far as to say that 1WTC looks better without 2WTC and 3WTC. I never liked Libeskind's spiral site plan. In my opinion it looks too shy. Alone 1WTC is more dominating the skyline as the Twins did, which in my opinion is far better than what Libeskind designed

Why? Also to stay on topic, I can't wait for more steel. :) And base cladding. Hope that comes very soon.
The tallest building November 15th, 2011, 03:10 AM I think by mid to late january of 2012 they should have cladding up to the octagon mark.
The tallest building November 15th, 2011, 03:18 AM I have always wonder why they havent added clading to the base. They covered it with this black covering and I expect it to have cladding after finishing.

They want 1 WTC to be unique. Having an uncladded concrete bunker base with partial scaffolding is a very cutting-edge approach, and it's sure to attract attention and praise from New Yorkers and tourists alike for many years to come. :)
Momo1435 November 15th, 2011, 10:54 AM ^^ That wouldn't be a bad idea actually.
